Why Should You Visit Blue Bell Creameries?

Let’s be honest, you visit for the homemade vanilla, or cookies and cream, or maybe butter pecan? This field trip is also great for learning about the history of the Blue Bell Creameries and seeing the manufacturing facility. Blue Bell was born in Texas and is a Texas staple that most people say is undoubtedly the best.

FUN FACT: Blue Bell is named after a wildflower that can be found growing in Texas.

At the Visitor Center you will learn how Blue Bell got its start, first by making butter, and then as a tiny operation selling ice cream to the locals with a horse and wagon. Then, follow the timeline along the wall to see how the company has grown to its present-day operations. There are photo ops and paper hats to have some fun with, as well.

Next, head to the Blue Bell Creameries building, housing the Baseball Museum, Observation Deck, Ice Cream Parlor, and Country Store.

Ice Cream Parlor

Of course, your field trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the ice cream counter. Step up and order your favorite, or try something new! Sometimes they are featuring flavors you can’t find at your local store. The $1 “scoop” is more like an overstuffed bowl. You won’t be disappointed. Flavors rotate, but you should have about 16 options to choose from. The Scoop On The Blue Bell Creameries Factory Tour

Article By: Kyle McCarthy

When driving the Texas Hill Country, plan a stop at the Blue Bell factory tour. Citizens of the Lone Star State claim they make the best ice cream in the country. This creamery, however, is not like most factory tours which take you behind the scenes.

Instead, Blue Bell’s tour is more hands-off. No dipping fingers into the production flavors as you stroll by.

Blue Bell Creameries worked with The Beatles in 1965 to promote their ice cream.

The New Blue Bell Creameries

Much of that standoffish attitude comes from the devastating listeria outbreak linked to certain Blue Bell ice cream products back in 2015. The company’s three ice cream manufacturing plants: Brenham, Texas ; Broken Arrow, Oklahoma ; and Sylacauga, Alabama closed down and were sanitized.

Blue Bell recalled all their products. Dairy freezers were empty for months.

Texans around the world wept.

Since 2021, all Blue Bell production facilities are B RCGS certified with an A (or above) rating in the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Totally modernized plants have strict sanitation rules. They admit visitors only if they’re behind glass windows, looking down at the action.

So, is the B lue Bell Creamery factory tour worth the stop? Read on.

The Original Blue Bell Creamery Tour In Brenham, Texas

Long, long ago in 1907, the Brenham Creamery butter company opened in a small Texas town. By popular demand, they grew into hand crafting ice cream in 1911. Legend has it that in 1930, executives named the ice cream company “Blue Bell” after a Texas wildflower, but that makes no sense since the flower’s name is written as one word. Nonetheless, adman Lyle Metzdorf made Blue Bell a household name with roadside billboards that proclaimed, “We’re cranky about flavor!” and “We eat all we can and sell the rest!”

Today, any genuine Texan stops for the facts at the mother ship — the original Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham, Texas.

The cute small town of Brenham, which had its own Relais & Chateau Inn at Dos Brisas for years, is about 70 miles northwest of Houston. Houston and Austin metro area families crowd town parking lots on weekends. In the summer, this ice cream factory tour makes a great stop on a Texas road trip.

The bad news is that, in Brenham, the factory tour is only open weekdays from 8am to 2pm.

Remember, if you’re going all the way to Brenham, you really want to see the plant’s Observation Deck . It’s the closest look the public gets on a so-called Blue Bell factory tour.

What Makes The Visitor Center Fun (Besides Ice Cream)

Museum and exhibits about the history of Blue Bell ice cream making are at the Visitors Center in Brenham, Texas.

There is a small but interesting Blue Bell Factory Tour Visitor Center (open 8am to 5pm and also closed weekends.) Take your selfies, look at the small museum of memorabilia and see an introductory video to ice cream making. Ask the kids to take notes. They’ll want to understand what’s happening through the Observation Deck’s windows later on.

Our favorite image from the museum is of a smiling Blue Bell worker in lab coat. She is crushing bags of Oreo cookies to make the mixings for the new flavor, Cookies ‘n Cream . Another cool display is a poster of the Beatles, who did some cross-promotional marketing with Blue Bell.

Blue Bell Factory Sells Ice Cream, Too, And It’s Only $1!

A heaping scoop of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream, the author's favorite!

Afterwards, head to the Ice Cream Parlor building. It has a few more displays of memorabilia, a country store and, upstairs, a “self-guided tour.” That’s just a fancy way of saying ‘buy a scoop of ice cream and go look through the Observation Deck window.’

There are three good things to note about this building. First, the Blue Bell Factory Tour Ice Cream Parlor (open weekdays 9am to 4:30pm, open weekends during certain seasons) sells some flavors that are very tough to find in supermarkets. Second, the large cups packed with a single scoop of ice cream cost only $1. Third and not least, Blue Bell factory tours are free of charge.

What You’ll See On The Blue Bell Factory Tour

Author and family sampling eveyone's favorite Blue Bell flavor at the ice cream parlor next to the Blue Bell factory tour.

It is interesting to look through the Observation Deck windows (around the smudgy finger marks.) Below you, Blue Bell’s engrossing mechanical system for production and delivery appears almost old-fashioned.

Try to decipher the Rube Goldberg-like tangle of colorful tubes and slides that hang from the ceiling. We learned that the ice cream is kept warm (soft) so it can be forced through these tubes into a container. However, a lot of hygienic protection material obscures this view.

Full containers are then sealed and go to the freezing room. They will be quick frozen at -40°F (-40°C) until ready for shipping. (Blue Bell staff handle their own products and shepherd ice cream from refrigerator trucks to outlets in 23 of the southern US states.)

Bring binoculars if you want to watch the workers in lab coats and hairnets adding mix-ins, swirls and sealing the packs. At our visit, they packed Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough in half gallon tubs — 30,000 each day — four into one box. Some workers were wearing yellow noise canceling headsets. Others sorted through big blue plastic bags for the mix-ins or hosed the floors.

Conveyor belts swirl around the factory at several heights. The young staff on duty at the Observation Deck said there are three other plants in Brenham closed to the public. They explained that unseen sections of this plant were working with Dixie cup or quart size containers of the same flavor ice cream.

Be On The Lookout In The Frozen Aisle

Friends sample and photograph their favorite flavors with $1 scoops from the Blue Bell Creamery ice Cream Parlor in Brenham, Texas.

There’s always something new at Blue Bell. The most recent hit is Dr Pepper Float introduced in May 2023. Texan friends raved about it but many still prefer traditional flavors such as Pecans, Pralines ‘n Cream .

Blue Bell Creameries now makes 40 flavors. Look on your store shelves for Blue Bell’s No Sugar Added Vanilla , varieties of sherbet and frozen snacks.

And if you can’t make it to Brenham, Texas, stop by the Blue Bell Factory Tour in S ylacauga, Alabama . The new factory draped in plantation style décor welcomes guests Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm to a few historical displays about the creation of ice cream. The most fun is visiting the retro style ice cream parlor for scoops of beloved and new flavors, each $1.

Will you be driving through Broken Arrow, Oklahoma? Sorry, while this Blue Bell Creamery plant is busy producing frozen treats, the facilities are not open to the public.

How to Tour Blue Bell in Brenham, TX

Beloved across the state, Blue Bell Creameries is a Texas institution–and what better way to enjoy the state’s favorite ice cream than by visiting Blue Bell in Brenham?

The original home of Blue Bell Ice Cream welcomes visitors to tour its Observation Deck, charming grounds, and–more importantly as far as I and kids across the state are concerned–gigantic scoops of ice cream served up in their on-site parlor.

Visiting Brenham and want to tour Blue Bell Creameries while you’re there? Here’s everything you need to know before you go!

A Brief History of Blue Bell in Brenham

While Blue Bell has more than one creamery today (you can also visit one in Sylacauga, Alabama), it all started right here in Brenham, Texas, in 1907.

The Brenham Creamery Company was originally founded to produce butter, but as time wore on, the ice cream was what really stole the show.

In 1930, the company was renamed Blue Bell Creameries, in 1958, butter was officially discontinued and Blue Bell became solely focused on ice cream.

Texans have known and loved Blue Bell for generations (Mooo bars, Blue Bell ice cream sandwiches, and the Blue Bell individual cups are extremely fond memories from not just my childhood, but my dad’s), but it wasn’t until the 1980s that Blue Bell expanded outside of Texas.

Today, you can find Blue Bell products–including ice cream, frozen treats, and sherbert–in 22 states around the country.

What to Do at Brenham’s Blue Bell Creameries

Grab an ice cream (or several)..

Blue Bell’s second-floor Ice Cream Parlor is incredibly charming, featuring plenty of Blue Bell memorabilia–and for $1/scoop, you can sample one of 16 ice cream flavors on offer at the time, and/or a frozen treat like a Fudge Bar or Mooo Bar.

It’s a fantastic and very affordable way to have fun in Brenham, and since flavors rotate throughout the year, you never know exactly what you’re going to get.

Visit the Observation Deck.

Want to watch Blue Bell be created in real-time? Head to the Observation Deck for a birds-eye view of how the ice cream is made!

Not only is the Ice Cream Parlor charming and the Observation Deck incredibly interesting, but the grounds of Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham are also worth a peek, featuring statues, pretty corners, and even an old-fashioned ice cream truck.

Check out the Texas High School Baseball Museum.

As you walk in to head to the Ice Cream Parlor, you’ll find a surprising sight on the first floor: a small museum dedicated to high school baseball in Texas!

Though small enough that you could almost consider it a display rather than a full museum, it’s a fun addition to visiting Blue Bell in Brenham.

Tips for Blue Bell Tours in Brenham

Come hungry.

While you don’t technically have to order a giant helping of Blue Bell at the Ice Cream Parlor, it’s one of the best things about visiting!

Understand that you can’t tour the creamery floor.

Once upon a time, people visiting Brenham could take a more detailed Blue Bell tour to see how the ice cream was made on the ground–however, those tours have since been discontinued, and the Observation Deck now serves the same purpose.

… but it’s still worth visiting.

Even without a full tour, visiting Blue Bell Creameries Brenham is well worth it!

Enjoying a scoop at the Ice Cream Parlor and checking out the Observation Deck are some of the most fun things to do in Brenham, and a Blue Bell tour makes an excellent day trip from Austin , Houston, or College Station (and don’t forget to visit the rest of the beautiful town, too!).

Essential Information for Visiting Blue Bell Creameries

Blue Bell’s Ice Cream Parlor, Visitor’s Center, Country Store, and Observation Deck, along with the Texas High School Baseball museum, are typically open Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Unfortunately, you can’t visit on the weekend, so be sure to plan your trip during normal business hours!

GPS directions will deliver you right to the front of the creamery, and the campus is well-marked. You’ll find the entrance for the ice cream parlor directly to the right of the large white building that says “Blue Bell Creameries” at the top.

Due to concerns surrounding health and safety in 2020, the Observation Deck is currently closed–however, the parlor alone is worth stopping to tour Blue Bell while in Brenham!

What’s the point of coming to visit if you have discontinued the tours and the observation deck is closed? And you are closed on weekends when family visits can be arranged?

Due to popular demand and inspired by one of our most active tourists, a lady named Brenda, we now offer ice cream tours.  We have certain criterion to be considered:

  • It must be locally produced.
  • It must have been recognized in some poll or recommended by our clients.

We want to give you unique experiences that you will not find anywhere else.  Thus, to the disappointment of some of our clientele, we generally do not visit shops for Blue Bell ice cream or go to the Marble Slab or Ben & Jerry’s, unless requested.  However, Amy’s will mash and mix your ice cream with lots of toppings or with other ice creams, similar to the Marble Slab.  This tour will explore different parts of the city in search of the best local and fresh ice cream.

How many better pastimes are there in Houston on a hot and humid day?  Heck, ice cream tastes good in winter and throughout the year.

Did you know that ice cream was once only available for the wealthy and seasonally?  Don’t you feel special now?

We typically go to four ice cream parlors, shops, or restaurants within the three (3) hours for groups of 1 to 9 people. Allow more time for larger groups. (You also will be larger at the end of this tour.) Sometimes, we can fit in a fifth location. Because one normally needs time to ask questions, sample, and then indulge for 15 to 20 minutes to eat one scoop of ice cream, we allow about 30 minutes per site. Sometimes people need more time to consume the ice cream when they ask for two or more scoops. We want you to have sufficient time to relax and enjoy your sweets.

All ice cream and food should be consumed in the premises of the store or shop and not while it is melting in the vehicle. We will wait for you to consume all of your ice cream at each stop before we enter the vehicle.

On November 20, 2013, the Houston Press published an article titled “Rest of the Best 2013: Top Ten Ice Cream Spots.” Of those ten, one was in Galveston, one does not have a storefront, and two have gone out of business. Only six of them are still in business in Houston with their own shop to enter and eat.

A July 28, 2014 Zagat article titled “The Best Ice Cream Parlors in Houston” identified seven such locations. They were all covered in the Houston Press 2013 article. One ice cream is the one without a storefront and one went out of business; thus, this leaves only five options.

We can swap out the various ice cream parlors. Just let us know in advance of the tour to customize it so we can plan an efficient route. Some of these shops are of greater distances in different directions.

Each of these shops makes small amounts of ice cream daily and as such it varies. Do not expect to always find the same ice creams at each site all of the time.

Typical Sites in Alphabetical Order:

  • Amy’s Ice Creams – many selections and toppings. Female owned.
  • Chocolate Bar, The – 24 selections. Gay owned.
  • Cloud 10 Creamery – 10 selections. Asian owned.
  • Fat Cat Creamery – 12 selections.
  • Hank’s Ice Cream – 16 selections. African American owned.
  • Pollo Bravo – 1 ice cream selection. Peruvian and Mexican owned.

Recommendations:

  • Try free samples before ordering. The Chocolate Bar, Fat Cat Creamery, and Hank’s Ice ream give free samples. Cloud 10 Creamery limits samples to only 3 when it is busy. Amy’s Ice Creams is often too busy to give samples. One can find over 50 people in line to buy ice cream at Amy’s. It is a popular spot for high school and college students. Pollo Bravo is a Peruvian restaurant with the unique helado lucuma as a dessert. Try some samples to determine what you want to order.
  • Buy a small order. Most of the small orders come with two large scoops. Ask for two different flavors to indulge. If you are with someone else, you two can share the two flavors or order two small ice creams and share 4 different scoops. If you order a small cup of ice cream, this will also enhance the opportunity to go to more shops.
  • Decide in advance if you want a waffle cone. They generally range from $0.50 to $1.50 extra. Hank’s has sugar cones for free with the purchase of your ice cream.
  • Give your stomach enough space to have samples and order ice cream at each site.
  • Sign up online to Amy’s Ice Creams email list to get news blasts of free offerings and sales.

If you purchase a small order at each site, expect to pay $3.00 to $6.00 per order.

We can be flexible on the time. Some of the shops do not open until 12:00 PM. Hank’s is opened the fewest hours. It does not open until 3:00 PM on Sunday, is closed on Monday, and closes every other day by 8:00 PM. All other venues are open everyday and stay open until between 9:00 PM and 12:00 AM/midnight.

The tours normally start and end at the Visitors Center in downtown unless you want it customized at a higher price. The price of the tour only includes the transportation. Bring money for the flavors and toppings that you want to taste. Appreciating ice cream flavors is a highly subjective topic.

Did you know that July 19th is National Ice Cream Day? Schedule a tour on this day for two or more people and one person gets to go for free! Schedule an ice cream tour on any other day of July and get 10% off.

Touring the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory

Ever wonder what goes into making some of your favorite Blue Bell Ice Cream flavors?

Well, you can find out firsthand during a tour of the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory in Brenham, Texas, where the company first began.

The tour gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how the company’s wide range of ice cream flavors – such as Moo-llennium Crunch and Cookies 'n Cream – and other ice cream snacks are made.

During the 45-minute tour, visitors can observe some of the roughly 800 employees who work at the factory as they make and package the delicious treats that people in the South have grown to know and love.

Blue Bell began in 1907 as the Brenham Creamery Company, which made butter with excess cream from area farmers.

The company made its first ice cream in 1911 in a wooden tub filled with ice that had to be hand cranked, making a maximum of two gallons of ice cream per day.

The company changed its name in 1930 to Blue Bell Creameries, Inc., paying tribute to a native Texas wildflower, the bluebell.

Now, that once small company has become one of the top three best-selling ice cream companies in the country and is offered in parts of at least 22 states.

So it’s a special treat for visitors to be able to come to the Blue Bell factory in Brenham and observe what goes into creating the product that started it all and has kept the company growing all these years – the sweet and delectable ice cream.

The factory in Brenham is the largest of the company’s three production facilities (the other two are in Broken Arrow, Okla., and Sylacauga, Ala.) and is the only one that makes all of the company’s products, including all of the roughly 60 ice cream flavors and various frozen snack items.

The factory uses milk from more than 60,000 cows each day to produce all the ice cream.

There is also a bakery on site where some of the ice cream inclusions –- such as cake or brownie pieces – are made.

Something you’ll notice on the tour is that all the ice cream cups and containers that have inclusions are spun in a circle by a machine as they are being filled to ensure an equal distribution of cookie dough, candy pieces or whatever the inclusion may be within the container.

There is also a machine that assembles 120 ice-cream sandwiches per minute.

While the number of ice cream flavors has increased over the years, the company’s commitment to quality has not wavered, said Jenny Van Dorf, public relations market specialist for Blue Bell.

“We’re committed to getting the best possible ingredients,” she said.

So if that means getting chocolate from Holland to make Blue Bell’s Dutch Chocolate Ice Cream (and it is), that’s what the company does.

Van Dorf said Blue Bell’s most popular seller continues to be Homemade Vanilla, followed by Cookies ‘n Cream.

Tours run Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A limited amount of tickets are sold online, but most are purchased on a first come, first serve basis at the tour center.

To plan your trip, visit www.bluebell.com or call 1-800-327-8135.

It all started on a hot summer day in 1907

A group of local businessmen in Brenham, Texas, decided to establish the Brenham Creamery Company and make butter from excess cream brought in by area farmers. A few years later, the creamery began making ice cream and delivering it to neighbors by horse and wagon. It was in 1930 that the company changed its name to Blue Bell Creameries after the native Texas bluebell wildflower. Butter was produced until 1958 when Blue Bell began to focus full time on making ice cream.

From our creamery to Your Table.

Today, our product lineup includes Blue Bell Ice Cream, No Sugar Added Ice Cream, Sherbet and frozen snacks. Each one is distributed to supermarkets and food stores through our direct store delivery program. Direct store delivery means that no one other than a Blue Bell employee handles the product from the time it is made until it reaches the grocery store. This is one of the ways that Blue Bell ensures consumers get the freshest possible ice cream.

We’re cranking out Our Best.

Our growth has been slow – it wasn’t until the 1980s that Blue Bell became available outside of Texas – but it has been steady. Although Blue Bell is only available in a portion of the nation’s supermarkets, it ranks as one of the best-selling ice creams in the country. Our products are sold in 23 states. No matter how much the market grows, quality standards never change and are never compromised. That’s why some folks say, “ Blue Bell is the best ice cream in the country. ”

Blue Bell Ice Cream Factory Tour and Tasting

Located about half way between Houston and Austin sits the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory. On our recent spring break trip we thought it would be the perfect pit stop as we made our way across the state.

Blue Bell Ice Cream factory tour and tasting in Brenham, Texas!

The Blue Bell Creamery factory in Brenham is a little off the beaten path, so I wouldn’t consider it necessarily a “road side attraction”. However, it’s worth the 15-ish minute detour if you’re looking for a place to stretch your legs and get some ice cream. The creamery has a visitor center, observation deck for the factory, country store and scoop shop. Hours vary, so be sure to check their website before you plan your trip.

Blue Bell Ice Cream factory tour and tasting in Brenham, Texas!

Our two favorite parts of our visit were the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of Blue Bell, and the scoop shop. HUGE ice cream scoops are only $1 here so you can load up the whole family with their favorite flavor.

Blue Bell Ice Cream factory tour and tasting in Brenham, Texas!

The scoop shop accepts cash or credit and if you need a dairy free option, they’ll give you a popsicle at no charge. They don’t mix flavors in a cup, but you can buy 2 cups (for $2) and it’s totally worth it.

Our stop at Blue Bell Ice Cream was fun, a little educational, and delicious! If you’re traveling between Houston and Austin, I highly recommend you give yourself and extra hour and plan a stop at the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory!

10 Best Businesses to Tour in and Around Houston

Jef Rouner October 23, 2014 6:00AM

Maybe you were one of those kids who resented a trip to tour factories and other proud bastions of industry in and around the city of Houston. If so, have fun, hippies, because nothing says masterhood like carving the natural resources of Mother Earth into mechanical submission! Me, I love a good look 'round at how things are made. I still have a program on the history and manufacturing of concrete on my DVR after three years because it's bloody fascinating.

If you share this love, then come on with me. We've got some great places to take tours through.

Blue Bell Creameries Though it's a drive out to Brenham to do so, one of the best tours available within reasonable distance is of the Blue Bell Creameries. The price is very affordable, $6 for adults and $4 for kids and seniors. It's a 45-minute walk through the plant with a well-versed staff regarding the history of the company and the exact ice cream making process. Plus at the end they give you free samples of any flavor you like. It's a trek, but if for some reason you're taking a trip to Austin, it makes for a fun and informative stopover. But warning: It's not open on weekends.

Hamilton Shirts Technically you don't actually tour the workroom at Hamilton Shirts. However, you are able to watch the work being done on the luxury men's wear products through a large picture window, and the showroom also contains plenty of information and pictures of the company from its more than a century of business. It's a testament to the old-fashioned but hands-on and caring way they continue to make their product.

Mrs. Baird's Bread There is pretty much nothing in the world like the wondrous smell of fresh-baked bread, and the Mrs. Baird's factory will show you how it's done. At the end you even get free bread and butter, and unlike a lot of other tours in Houston, this one is completely free.

South Texas Nuclear Generating Station Down in Bay City, you can actually tour a nuclear power plant, and I can't think of anything more science fiction than that. It can be a little more of a hassle than most other tours. You have to fill out a form and get approval, for instance, but that's a small price to pay to put a face on one of the most frightening industries in the world.

Wortham Theater Center Houston First offers a backstage tour of the Wortham Theater Center, and it is not to be missed if you can make it. The cavernous labyrinth that hosts our ballets and operas is full of history and interesting trivia, to say nothing of the fact that you experience the sheer scale of the place. It really is like a cathedral to art, and checking out backstage only enhances the magic.

Made in Texas: Famous Brands

Some of the most universally popular companies saw their beginnings right here in the Lone Star State. From the brewery that makes Shiner Bock to the original Blue Bell Ice Cream factory, we visit the homes of beloved brands to witness Texas ingenuity up close.

Stuff: We buy it, wear it, drink it, eat it, and decorate our homes with it. We love stuff so much, we form bonds with companies that are particularly good at making it. Few things inspire as much affection as a trusted company name, and Texas is full of brands loved the world over. We ventured to some of these homegrown headquarters for the history and the swag.

Be a Pepper in Waco

A small-town pharmacist in 1885 creates a soda that reminds him of the fruit-syrup smells in his drugstore. Well over a century later, his recipe is the cornerstone of a billion-dollar company.

That’s the unlikely tale of Dr Pepper, whose origin in Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco is a testament to 20th-century entrepreneurship. The drink, with its inimitable taste and a history of sloganeering, is renowned around the globe and legendary in Texas.

Visitors at Waco’s Dr Pepper Museum learn the history behind the legend one piece of memorabilia at a time. Founded in 1988, the museum contains 100,000 artifacts dedicated not only to Dr Pepper but to the soft drink industry in general.

We spent hours exploring its three floors, which constitute the company’s original bottling plant. Vintage signs, posters, and machines adorn the halls, dispensing tantalizing morsels of history. We learned that the company dropped the period from “Dr.” in the 1950s for typographical reasons and to distance itself from the medical profession.

Finally, we retired to the gift shop, where the real draw was the soda fountain, which uses an old-school soda jerk who mixes the drink right before your eyes. The taste was unparalleled—vim, vigor, vitality indeed.

The Scoop on Blue Bell

Blue Bell Creameries , maker of ice cream since 1911, inspires a fierce kind of fandom.

When the company’s monthly newsletter reveals the latest rotational flavors, customers wait for their favorites to be named. Blue Bell distributes in only 23 states, mostly in the South, and is one of the highest-selling ice cream brands in the nation. But with top-selling flavors like Homemade Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, and Cookies ’n Cream, it might rank first in customer loyalty.

So it’s no surprise that company headquarters at “the Little Creamery in Brenham ” teems with visitors Monday through Friday, when tours of the factory open to the public.

The 45-minute tour led us through the facility, as guides sprinkled facts about the company’s history and operations. We learned how Blue Bell started as a butter manufacturer in 1907; how its name came from the Texas bluebell wildflower, which thrives in the summer; and how handlers keep the finished ice cream below 20 degrees to ensure high quality.

The tour ends with a free scoop, and my choice was the Magic Cookie Bar, one of the newest Blue Bell flavors. It’s a transcendent mix of caramel sauce loaded with graham cracker crust crumbs, roasted pecan pieces, chunks of dark chocolate, and toasted coconut flakes. I wanted it never to end.

Shiner Like a Diamond

Five days a week, cars full of people make it out to Shiner , Texas, a small town of 2,069 sitting nearly halfway between Austin and Houston.

Their destination? Spoetzl Brewery, a handsome-looking, multi-level operation that pumps out millions of gallons of cold Shiner Bock to a thirsty, thankful world. The place is named for Kosmos Spoetzl, a Bavarian who bought the existing brewery in 1909 and introduced his hoppy malted-barley brew.

Free tours are offered Monday through Friday, five times a day in the summer and three times a day the rest of the year. We picked a Friday morning and met in the gift shop, where an employee handed each of us four wooden chips, to be traded in for samples at tour’s end.

The tour winds through giant rooms full of tanks, pipes, and kettles, with fascination at every turn. And we learned that there have been only five brewmasters in Shiner’s 105-year history. We learned that the place survived Prohibition by producing “near beer,” an alcohol-free substitute.

Afterward came the free sample; I went with Shiner White Wing, a Belgian white ale with orange-peel freshness, while my friends chose Ruby Redbird, a seasonal favorite that will soon be available year-round.

It’s sure to be a popular move, coming from a good place.

FUN FACT Dr Pepper’s logo gets a face-lift roughly once a decade, making it easy for collectors to date memorabilia. Its slogans, too, have changed to suit the times: “King of Beverages” (1889–1914), “Vim, Vigor, Vitality” (early 1900s), “The Friendly Pepper-Upper” (1950s), “America’s Most Misunderstood Soft Drink” (1960s), “I’m a Pepper!” (1970s), and “Just What the Doctor Ordered” (1990s–present).
