Whether you join our walking  Inca Trail Tour   or jump on a mountain train to get there, losing yourself amongst the ancient temples, palaces and humble dwellings of this famous ‘lost’ city is a true bucketlist experience.

Other highlights of our  Peru adventure tours  include a trek to the multi-colored rainbow mountain of Palccoyo, spotting Andean Condor above the vast river gorge of Colca Canyon and exploring the Inca Empire city of Cusco with its patchwork landscape of terracotta roofs and winding alleyways. Peru tour highlights

Our selection of small group tours to Peru can take you from the soul-stirring sights of  walking the Inca Trail  to exploring the Peruvian Amazon, family trips in the Sacred Valley or  tours of Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.

From lofty mountain peaks to fascinating Inca ruins, our tours encompass a vast choice of experiences around Peru, but a few of our favorite highlights include:

Trekking the Inca Trail  is the classic Peru experience. Culminating in Machu Picchu, designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this challenging route twists and turns through the Andes Mountain Range, passing rushing rivers, crumbling Inca ruins and cloud forests wreathed in mist. Our four-day fully supported trek includes navigating the Inca Trail, staying at campsites away from the crowds, as well as Machu Picchu; one of the best views of the trip is getting your first glimpse of the glorious Inca ruins as you arrive at the Sun Gate on foot. You’ll also get to stroll through the ancient cobbled streets of Cusco, the atmospheric former Inca capital.

There’s also the option to extend your trip with a visit to an eco-lodge in the wildlife-rich Amazon basin. The trek can also be combined with an  in-depth Peru trip to Lake Titicaca and Colca Canyon, two of Peru’s most compelling natural highlights, where you’ll stay on the island of Taquile in a traditional homestay. There’s nothing like watching the sun set over the glass-like waters of the world’s highest navigable lake.

Machu Picchu

Perhaps the most famous of Peru’s top sights, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Set high in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 2,430 metres, it is believed to have been built by the Inca in the 15 th  century and later abandoned, though its original use still remains a mystery. You’ll certainly recognise the labyrinth of dry-stone walls clinging to the grassy plateau and terraced steps leading down to the Urubamba River. Whether choosing a  classic Peru trip  taking in the ancient citadel, a  walking and trekking tour to Peru , or combining your trip with  the Galapagos Islands , you’ll find that Machu Picchu features highly on all of our group tours to Peru.

Palccoyo (Rainbow mountain)

Peru’s striated mountains are high up on many people’s must-see sights in Peru, but this in turn attracts the crowds. Escape the bus tours with a trip to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain – the antidote to the photographers' paradise of Vinicuna – where its striped flanks are dappled in shades of grey-green, pale gold and rich umber. Getting away from the crowds is something we aim to do on our tours, so if you’re looking to explore the mountains of Peru, Palccoyo is one to add to your list. Not only is the Palccoyo trek quieter and shorter than the alternative, it’s an out-and-back route which will allow you to enjoy the views on the way up and the way down.

Colca Canyon

One of the world’s deepest canyons, Colca Canyon is also one of the best places in Peru to spot rare Andean Condors. If the conditions are right, you can stand at the canyon rim and view these magnificent birds soaring on the thermals from miradors such as Cruz del Condor. The birds often swoop low over onlookers’ heads, adding to the excitement provided by the spectacular 1200 metre drop to the river below. You can visit Colca Canyon on our  Peru In Depth tour , which also includes the Inca Trail during 19 days of thrilling discovery.

Cusco was the former capital of the Inca empire, and marries both archaeological ruins and elegant Spanish colonial architecture – the latter best seen in Plaza de Armas, the old city’s colonnaded central square. Peruvian cuisine has seen somewhat of an explosion in recent years, and Cusco has its fair share of recommended restaurants where you can enjoy delicious Peruvian dishes like ceviche or tacu tacu – like Peruvian bubble and squeak. It’s also the gateway to Machu Picchu, so if you’re taking in the Inca citadel on one of our  classic Peru tours  you’ll pass through Cusco.

Solo travel in Peru

All of our Peru tours are suitable for solo travelers . You can expect that about half of our customers will travel solo, so if you’re considering an Explore tour as a solo traveler you won’t be the only person traveling alone. Going on a small-group tour gives you the perfect opportunity to meet fellow travelers who share the same interests. Considering traveling solo with a small group for the first time? We've answered some of your most-asked questions .

Best time to go to Peru

The dry season from May to September is the most popular time to hike the Inca Trail and visit the wonder of Machu Picchu . The hottest months of June and August are the busiest, whereas in September and October the temperatures are pleasantly warm without being too hot, and the trails are quieter.  Amazon Rainforest If you plan to extend your Peru tour with a wildlife-spotting trip along the tropical Amazon River , book a trip in September, October or November for the best experience. Immerse yourself in the lush jungle waterways and keep a lookout for bright orange frog, rainbow feathered Macaw and inquisitive otter.  Inti Raymi Festival For an immersive Peruvian cultural experience, book onto our Classic Peru Discovery Tour in June to witness colorful parades, eclectic dancing and live music during the Inti Raymi Festival celebrations in Cusco. This old Inca ‘Festival of the Sun’ happens on 24 June to mark the Southern hemisphere winter solstice.

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Peru Tour Selection Trips

  • For getting to Machu Picchu, you have many tour options: hike the challenging Inca Trail, hike one of the sometimes even more challenging Inca Trail alternatives , or take a delightful train ride with magnificent vistas in its own right.
  • If possible, don’t limit yourself to Machu Picchu. Look for tours that visit other archaeological sites in the northern reaches of Peru, including the massive adobe city of Chan Chan or the fascinating Mochica tombs in Chiclayo.
  • In the Amazon, choose a travel supplier that uses indigenous tour guides, who are best suited to show you the culture and experience of the world’s largest rainforest.
  • Bring altitude medicine and sunscreen. The city of Cusco and Lake Titicaca may be situated at the highest altitude you’ve ever encountered. Peru is also quite close to the Equator, where the sun’s rays can be powerful. Outside of Lima, sunblock can be hard to find.
  • Pack clothes for many occasions. When it’s winter in North America, it’s summer in Peru. Bring a swimsuit for the immaculate beaches, bring a jacket for the high Andean peaks, and bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty for your Amazonian treks.
  • Practice a little Spanish before arriving in Peru. Although most tourist destinations are staffed with English-speakers, and your guide certainly will, knowing some basics will help you interact with Peruvians you meet in your travels.
  • Remember that hot water is a luxury in Peru. Don’t be surprised if you see light switches in your bathroom to provide you with a warm shower after a long day of sightseeing.
  • Prices are often negotiated in Peru so don’t be afraid to push for a better price or ask your guide about fair prices during your journey.
  • Also, cash in small bills is far more acceptable everywhere than credit cards, especially outside of the major cities.

Additional details

  • Good athletic shoes for hiking: When hiking in Peru , you want to make sure that your shoes have good treading and have good ankle support. You may opt to buy hiking boots, but most travelers say that athletic shoes are good enough to trek in. Make sure you break in your shoes before traveling so that you don’t end up with blisters!
  • Thick wool socks: The highlands of Peru are quite frigid, so warm socks will be a lifesaver. These will save your feet during the cold weather treks and freezing nights.
  • Thermal leggings/pants
  • Thermal long-sleeve shirts
  • Down jacket
  • Rain jacket: The weather can be very unpredictable, so a rain jacket or poncho will help you stay protected from unforeseen rain.
  • Insect repellent: In higher altitudes, bugs are less common. As Machu Picchu’s elevation is lower, you should pack insect repellent. The same goes for when visiting the Amazon.
  • Don’t wear flashy clothes and jewelry.
  • Don’t wander around at night, especially in cities.
  • Travel in groups.
  • Learn a little Spanish to help you get by.
  • Watch your drink to prevent spiking.
  • Keep your valuables at home/locked away in your hostel.
  • Avoid dodgy/deserted areas.
  • Avoid withdrawing from ATMs late at night, or from sketchy places to prevent fraud
  • Keep your credit card in sight when making purchases to prevent credit card fraud.
  • Exchange money at reputable agencies (eg. banks or money exchanges within hotels). This decreases the chance of receiving counterfeit bills, and being the target of crime.
  • Choose a reputable tour group.
  • Be vaccinated. Scroll down to learn more about vaccinations for Peru.
  • Get insured! You never know what misfortunes could happen during your trip.
  • Chill out for the first few days: Let your body adjust to the lower amount of oxygen intake.
  • Take deep breaths.
  • Avoid substances, such as alcohol: Drinking alcohol may increase your symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Ascend slowly: Many flights land in Cusco. Some travelers recommend taking a trip to a lower region as soon as you land, and working your way back up to Cusco, so that your body can get used to the shift.
  • Eat well, especially high-carb foods.
  • Stay hydrated
  • Take a chill pill: Diamox can be taken 24 hours prior to your ascent to help prevent symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
  • Diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Yellow fever

Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good idea for hot weather.

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if traveling on the Inca Trail.

Camping along the Inca Trail is one of the world's most sought-after travel experiences. Bond with new friends over delicious local food and rest up before another day of trekking.

What kinds of transport will be used in Peru?

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQI-rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQI community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQI-travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Welcome to Peru! Your adventure begins in Lima, Peru’s lively capital city. On arrival, you will be collected from the airport and transferred to your hotel. Here you will meet your small group of fellow travellers and your local leader for a 6pm welcome meeting. If you arrive in Lima early, the city is full of bars converted from old colonial mansions, so you may like to head out for your first pisco sour. After your meeting, join your leader and small group for a welcome dinner. Lima has one of the world’s most revered culinary scenes, and this evening you’ll head to one of the city’s best restaurants, set in a historic house in the bohemian neighbourhood of Barranco. Here you’ll enjoy a menu of traditional Peruvian dishes inspired by the chef’s mother, and the welcoming atmosphere of a family home.

Start the day with a walking tour with your leader through Lima’s Barranco neighbourhood – a favourite with local artists, this is the creative heart of the city. Explore streets lined with colourful buildings, vibrant murals and interesting street art. The area is also home to some of Lima’s best bars – stop off at a popular spot to taste a few local specialties. Later on, catch a flight to Arequipa, a beautiful Spanish colonial city. On arrival, head out for an orientation walk with your leader. Known as La Ciudad Blanca (The White City), Arequipa’s buildings have been built almost exclusively from a white volcanic material called sillar, giving the city an appearance like no other. Situated in a valley at the foot of the El Misti volcano, the city also boasts a truly remarkable backdrop.

This morning, meet a local guide who’s an expert on all things Arequipa and set out on a tour of the city. Explore Plaza de Armas, the city’s main square, then continue to the Santa Catalina Monastery while your guide shares stories of the city’s history along the way. Stop by the San Ignacio Chapel to appreciate its colonial mural paintings. Visit the beautiful Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa with another local expert guide who will discuss the many layers of the building’s history – from its construction in 1656 to its subsequent destructions and rebuilds. The afternoon is free your own discoveries. Why not pick up an Alpaca jumper and meet the llamas and alpacas of Mundo Alpaca or take part in an active adventure in the surrounding hills and rivers. Or perhaps visit the museum that houses 'Mummy Juanita' – the well-preserved body of a young Inca girl who died sometime between 1450 and 1480.

This morning, drive through the Altiplano high plains to the Colca Valley and Canyon. On the way you'll see grazing vicunas, llamas and alpacas, as well as stone cairns built by local indigenous communities. More than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, the Colca Canyon provides some breathtaking views. The pre-Inca terraces carved into its walls are still cultivated today, and the area is dotted with traditional Indian villages with locals in colourful dress. Stop at the highest point (4910 metres) to enjoy views of the landscape below. Drive on the town of Chivay, where you'll have some time to soak up the local hot springs, then continue to the Aranwa Pueblito Encantado del Colca Hotel, your Feature Stay accommodation for the evening. With a prime location along the rugged Colca River, this resort offers tranquillity and comfort in a truly magnificent setting. The grounds are just as wondrous as the surroundings – tumbling waterfalls, organic gardens and gorgeous pools make this a superb spot to explore. With modern rooms, first-class service and fantastic amenities, this stay is sure to be one to remember.

Rise early this morning to visit the Cruz del Condor viewpoint, where Andean condors, one of the world's largest flying birds, can often be seen soaring in the air. After lunch, begin the drive to Puno. On the way you will stop off at the Sillustani archaeological site. The ruined 'chullpas', or funeral towers, of Sillustani were built by a pre-Inca civilisation centuries ago to house the remains of noble men. Located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, Puno is full of Aymara and Quechuan Indian culture. The town is known as the folklore capital of Peru and is renowned for its traditional dances.

Be enchanted by striking scenery and unique cultures on a cruise around Lake Titicaca today. This morning, you will depart from the port in Puno for the floating Uros Islands. The Uros people constructed these islands to isolate themselves from rival tribes in ancient times. They are built completely from multiple layers of totora reeds, which grow in the shallows of the lake. Call into Taquile Island for some woollen handicrafts. Explore this extraordinary place before traveling back to Puno for the evening.

Rise early and travel to Cusco. The journey will be broken up with plenty of stops, including a visit to the Raqchi Archaeological Site. Arrive in Cusco by late afternoon. Cusco is South America's oldest continuously inhabited city, and was the home of the Inca for two centuries before the Spanish built their first capital here. Today Cusco is a fascinating combination of both cultures. At 3450 metres above sea level, it’s important to take time to acclimatise to the city’s altitude. After settling in at the hotel, take a casual walk around Plaza de Armas with your leader and pick up some excellent dinner recommendations along the way.

This morning you will discover the best of Cusco on a walking tour. First, enjoy a special tour of the World Heritage-listed Cusco Cathedral with a local historian guide. Built on top of an Incan palace, the building is now one of Cusco’s greatest repositories of art, and your guide will share its history from past to present. Then, tour the Coricancha Temple with another local guide. The temple was once covered in sheets of gold that were eventually removed to raise a ransom for the life of Atahualpa, and later the Spanish demolished the temple to build a Dominican church on its foundations. Soon after, head to the colourful San Pedro market. Finish with a snack at Cafe Manos Unidos, whose core purpose is to improve the quality of life for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities through vocational training and education in the hospitality industry. The food is all natural and is prepared and served by the students on site – have a chat with them as you enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat. The rest of the day is yours – speak to your leader about the option to arrange a cooking class at a local restaurant using fair trade products, or the half-day Inkilltambo trek, exploring an archaeologic site on the city’s outskirts.

Today you will head for the Sacred Valley. Just outside of Cusco, visit the fortress ruins of Sacsayhuaman. The massive stone blocks forming the settlement's walls give you an idea of the ingenuity of the Inca. Continue on to the Sacred Valley. Treasured for its climate, fertile land and the Urubamba (Sacred) River, the valley has long been the main source of food in the high Andes. Afterwards, stop for lunch at the Chichubamba community in Urubamba to take part in an ancient cooking ritual known as pachamanca. This cooking method, which dates back to the time of the Inca empire, sees meats marinaded in spices then placed in a huatia (earth oven) with a selection of root vegetables and cooked slowly over hot stones. You will also visit a couple of local workshops making pottery and chocolate and a chicheria (corn beer) bar. Later, continue to the town of Ollantaytambo. Built over an ancient Inca settlement, this is one of the few places where the Inca defeated the Spanish. Explore the archaeological site with an expert local guide who will discuss the evidence of the Incas' engineering skills in the ruins of ancient aqueducts, irrigation canals, dams on the Urubamba River and towering sets of terraces.

Today’s journey from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes will reveal some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. Board the 360 Machu Picchu Train – with high domed windows in each carriage, there’s few better ways to view the magical Andes Mountains. The train also features an open-air observation carriage so you can marvel at the landscape from every angle. Disembark the train in Aguas Calientes then take a short bus up the winding road to Machu Picchu, where you will be joined by a guide who will take you through the ruins and tell you stories of its history and the ancestral people of the region. The true purpose behind Machu Picchu may always be a mystery, since no historical records of the complex exist. Most archaeologists, however, believe it to be the 15th-century headquarters of Emperor Pachacuti. Your leader can advise how to get the most out of your visit. Later, take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes to spend the night before heading back up to Machu Picchu first thing in the morning for your second visit.

Rise before the sun and take the winding road back up to Machu Picchu for another morning uncovering its secrets. On your second visit, explore more of the extraordinary architecture of the many temples, palaces and living quarters. The sight of the ruins of Machu Picchu against a lush backdrop of forested mountain is one you are going to want to remember – so be sure to have your camera ready. You'll have time along the way to take any photos you may have missed yesterday. Take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, then catch a standard train back to Ollantaytambo. From here, you will make the drive back to Cusco for the evening.

Today you will catch a flight to Puerto Maldonado. On arrival in the afternoon, take a bus to the community port of Infierno where you will board motorised canoes and head upstream into the Amazon rainforest. Keep an eye out for macaws, herons, alligators and capybaras along the way. Here you’ll find Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion, your Feature Stay for the next two nights. Built in the heart of a 380 hectare-private ecological reserve, this unique resort is focussed on the conservation of local habitats and features 25 private cabanas plus an on-site team of expert local guides. Enjoy lunch at the lodge then explore the Concepcion Trails with an expert guide. As darkness begins to fall, join a guided Twilight River boat ride and see how many caimans you can spot lurking on the riverbanks. Dinner is a la carte and draws on local Amazon ingredients to create a meal to remember.

After breakfast, board a dug-out wooden canoe to quietly glide across Lake Sandoval, keeping an eye out for red howler monkeys, giant river otters, and colourful macaws along the way. After lunch you may like to walk along the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a 344 metre network of suspension bridges that take you high above the forest floor to some of the best places to spot toucans, woodpeckers, monkeys, and three-toed sloths. Join a night walk to discover the nocturnal activity in the surrounding areas or book into the lodge’s spa (own expense), before you meet your group for dinner.

This morning you will travel back to Puerto Maldonado, then take a flight to Lima, arriving in the early afternoon. Enjoy a few hours at leisure to explore any of the city’s sights you may have missed the first time around, then get back together with your fellow travellers and leader for dinner. Overlooking an ancient pre-Inca archaeological site and serving up a delectable menu of Peruvian delights, this final dinner is sure to leave you with a lasting memory of your time in Peru.

Your adventure comes to an end after breakfast this morning. If you would like to spend some more time in Lima, we’d be happy to arrange additional accommodation ahead of time (subject to availability).

Ancient, Intriguing, Amazing!

Peru is one of South America’s premier destinations and not just because of its status of the land of the ancient Incas, the ruins of Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Andes; it’s also full of many cultural, historical and archeologically significant sites. But it is also known for its world-renowned food scene. Higher end restaurants are popping up everywhere with cuisine influenced by Latin America, Europe and even the Amazon and everyone is taking notice.

Destination Must-Sees

Peru ms1

Machu Picchu:

Peru’s impressive 15th century Inca ruins are located high in the stunning Andes Mountains. Much is still unknown about this site that is the most well-preserved evidence of the urban Inca Empire. The Incas were without a written language, therefore, there are no records left behind on how it was created, its uses or why it was abandoned.

Peru ms2

Lake Titicaca & the floating islands:

This area is home to the Uros people, a group of indigenous people (pre-dating the Incas). They live on breathtaking Lake Titicaca’s 42 floating islands. They believe that the lake was where the world was created and consider it sacred. Recently a large temple was discovered submerged in the lake, and the Uros people are fighting exploration for fear of the effects of disrespecting the temple will bring.

Peru ms3

This capital of the republic of Peru was originally named the ‘city of kings’ after the three wise men of the Bible, and later changed to Lima. You’ll find ancient sites and colonial architecture in this now modern city. The people are warm and hospitable and the food is delightful. The city has been awarded the world’s top food travel destination four years in a row.

peru small group tours

The former capital of the Inca Empire, and was considered at that time to be the center of the world. The city is now an urban center of religion and government with charming streets, historic buildings and bustling squares. The most fascinating building in Cuzco is the Coricancha, known as the golden enclosure and the most sacred of all Inca sites.

Destination Must-Dos

Peru md1

Ollantaytambo:

A little, ancient town in the western end of the Sacred Valley, it is the best surviving example of Inca town planning. The town is divided into blocks of homes with only one entrance that leads to a central courtyard. This town was a great feat for ancient times as the stones used to build the town came from the opposite side of the river, requiring massive efforts from the people.

Peru md2

Sacsayhuaman:

Located on the outskirts of Cuzco, these ancient ruins sit atop a mountain leveled by the people of the period. Massive walls surround this sprawling complex. In the center lies a mysterious circular stone structure thought to be a solar calendar. The complex surprisingly has a water reservoir, storage cisterns, ramps, citadels, and underground chambers. Experts believe it was a fortress or former home of royalty.

Peru md3

The Sacred Valley:

Also known as Urumbamba Valley, the Sacred Valley of the Incas contains many intriguing remains of Inca villages – including mummies! Its climate and fertile plains have drawn settlers to this rare fruitful location in the high Andes since ancient times. This former route to the Peruvian jungle was also a buffer zone protecting settlers from incursions from the Antis jungle tribes.

Peru md4

Plaza de Armas:

In ancient times, this city square was home to an Incan palace and a venue for festivals and religious ceremonies. After the Spanish took over in the 16th century, the palace was demolished and two churches were erected here flanking the square, which was then used to conduct military exercises. Now, it holds a historic charm as most of the buildings you will see here date back to the 1700s.

Expert Advice

PaulVieira

Go shopping in the world renowned Pisac Market. Open every day, you will find hundreds of individual vendors from the local villages who sell everyday products and unique handmade items you won’t find anywhere else.

Peru e2

Taste the amazing ceviche. This popular Latin American dish of marinated fresh raw fish spiced with varied peppers and seasonings is “cooked” with citric juice (lemon or lime). Simply divine!

Peru e3

Sit down for a traditional meal. At a Pachamanca (earth oven) dinner that was popular with the Inca people, the food is layered, placed over hot stones and buried in the ground to cook for hours. It is a true cultural experience.

Its matchless landscapes encompass the world’s highest navigable lake, the spectacular scenery of the Colca Canyon and Machu Picchu, without doubt the finest and most important archaeological site in South America.

Peru’s climate has two main reasons- wet and dry- though the weather can vary greatly depending on the geographical region. There are three main geographical climatic regions; the Amazon Jungle, the Arid Coastal Desert and the Andean Mountains and Highlands. Though really an all-year round destination the best time to visit is between May and November during the dry season and the wettest months in the Sacred Valley near Machu Picchu are from December through to March.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Peru, though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is present in some parts of Peru, so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments as we are not medical professionals.

Currency

In Peru the official unit of currency is the Nuevo Sol.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours we frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your guides will be able to advise you accordingly.

Language & Religion

In Peru, the three main languages that have official status are Spanish, Quechua and Aymara. Spanish is by far and above the most useful language, although if you can muster a few words of Quechua, you’ll be amongst the few foreigners who take the trouble to do so. Over 90% of the country is Roman Catholic (at least nominally), although many of the indigenous people also hold strong traditional beliefs.

Time

Peru is 5 hours behind GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Peruvian food may not be considered amongst the world’s most famed cuisines but there is much to enjoy here. On the coast any seafood lover should try ceviche, Peru’s version or sushi. Traditional staples include lomo saltado (a beef and vegetable stiry-fry) and palta a la reyna (avocado stuffed with chicken salad). Quinoa, maize and local potatoes are also widely found.

Vegetarians can be catered for, although please be aware that the variety available to you will be limited in certain areas.   With regards to alcohol, Cusqueña beer is available pretty much everywhere as is the ubiquitous pisco sour.    Coca tea (mate de coca) is made from the coca leaf and can assist with altitude acclimatisation. This is the same leaf from which cocaine is produced but don’t expect to be feeling anything other than refreshed after a cup or two!

Small Group Tours in Peru – Exploor’s Tours in Cusco

It’s Saturday evening, January 2023. I’m at the office as an American couple enters the room. Hannah and Robin, who want to join our Alternative Rainbow Mountain tour  in two days, had a big problem. They told us that they compared many different agencies in Cusco and often didn’t understand their differences.

It was not the first time that I heard about this. Many of our travelers tell us about difficulties when comparing tours in Cusco and other cities in Peru  due to unclear or missing information when they plan their trip.

One of it being the group size. Mostly this information is hidden and not visible on web pages or when visiting a local agency. Even though it’s such a crucial characteristic that determines the final quality of the tour.

That’s why I’d like to explain to you how the Peruvian tour market works regarding group sizes and why small group tours are very new to this.

large travel group looking at map

A large group about to explore  Machu Picchu .

Small Group Tours and Other Tour Options

The Peruvian market is mainly organized into two types of services:

  • Group tours
  • Private tours

What private tours are should be clear to everyone. They mostly include a personal driver, your own guide and other details but also cost a lot more.

Group tours can be segmented: touristy groups and small groups. Let’s take a closer look at each of them.

travelers hiking through red landscape

In our small group tours you can get to know other passionate travellers.

Small Group Tours

In a small group you:

  • have a more personal contact and relation with the guide as there are not many others she has to focus on.
  • are only with like-minded travellers who look for something different, willing to spend a bit more in exchange for a value a touristy tour can’t give you.
  • can clearly understand what the guide says as the group only creates a “one-line semi-circle” around her when she speaks. I mean, who wants to be in the second or third row asking the traveler next to you about what the guide just said? We’re here to learn and to enjoy. Direct eye contact and standing close to the guide while listening is crucial.
  • are free to ask your guide whatever and as often as you want as there are not many other travelers interrupting with their own questions.
  • interact much better with the other like-minded travelers as there is no internal group building or solo traveling. The guide makes sure that everyone gets fully involved, no matter if they are intro- or extroverts. Until now, I’ve seen many travelers that grabbed a beer or that had dinner together after the tour. Some even did another tour together.

travellers discovering ruins and surrounded by valley

The Sun Gate is also the first viewpoint of Machu Picchu for all the people that do the  classic 4-day Inca Trail .

Large Group Tours

In a touristy group you:

  • are mixed with many different types of travelers mostly searching a low-cost tour. Others joined this tour as they had difficulties to understand the differences of tours they compared online or while being in the city before booking it.
  • have no personal touch as the guide is often less professional and receives a lower payment. He’s not really interested in sharing historical facts but rather in getting everyone to the site (and if not, well that’s your fault) and then back in the bus.
  • will see that it can be difficult to capture all the information the guide shares as you’re not always with her or you can’t hear clearly what she says due to the distance.
  • will be alone sometimes. Especially for 1-day hikes, as the guide cannot be with everyone all the time. In case you suddenly feel bad, f.e. due to symptoms of the  altitude sickness , it’s very probable that the guide won’t be with you. For hiking tours in Cusco, this might be fatal. The guide might be with other members of the group, which splits up in the beginning when the trek starts. Some walk quicker, some walk slower.
  • and everybody else go on their own as the group is often too large to create interactions. Often, small groups exist from the beginning on or form in the beginning.
  • won’t have the chance to ask your guide all the questions you have.

Thus, a huge part of the experience’s quality depends on the group size and finally, the guide.

8 – The Golden Number for Our Small Group Tours

We tested and worked closely with our guides while developing our small tour concept. 8 is the maximum number of participants in small group tour in order to comply with all the points I mentioned above.

With 9 or 10 people in a group, the participants might start forming a second row while the guide is talking. We want you to have direct eye contact and to be less than 2 m away so you can easily understand the guide. No matter if there’s a lot of wind or other people around.

Apart from that, we know that the experience with fewer people is more special. You get to know the others better and you can have a more personalized experience. Having a small group and getting to the destinations early before the majority arrives, such as in our  Humantay lake tour , is what many of our travelers love about our tours.

travel group standing next to each other in front of ruins

Ollantaytambo will be the last stop of your Sacred Valley tour and from there you can take the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town).

How Do Other Agencies Define Small Group Tours in Peru?

Coming back to the tour agencies and operators…So what’s a small group for them?

The problem is that many of them don’t indicate anything at all. Some may indicate say “small group” but no specific number of participants on their brochure or webpage. Thus, I made several calls and after a 3-day research, there were small groups of 12 up to 25 travelers.

What a joke and what kind of misleading information for travelers! The average group size is 16-19 travelers for most of the group tours offered in Peru. With this quantity, it allows the agencies to fill the buses and offer the tour at a cheap price.

Why am I talking about this? To bring light into this very important characteristic when considering what to look at when comparing tours. As you see, online as well as on brochures, in the agencies itself etc., there is too much hidden information which would make your planning and understanding easier if it was publicly available.

Transparency of information is a huge lack over here. However, it will be solved step by step as more and more people start to understand that the traveler is looking for something trustworthy. Trust cannot be created with missing information.

I hope this will help you understand what “the” characteristics of a small and a touristy group are. It’s highly recommended to take them into consideration when planning your trip to Peru.

Touring Peru

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Peru Rail runs train services to major tourist spots Cusco and Macchu Pichu, although services to other areas in the country may be limited. Bus services criss-cross the country and are generally inexpensive, although the conditions of different model buses can vary considerably.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our longstay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, Environment, & Weather

Peru covers a total area of 1,285,216 square kilometres and has a coastline of 2,414 kilometres. There are three main geographical zones in Peru – the arid Costa region in the west, the mountainous Sierra in the centre, and the tropical Amazonia region to the east. The Andes Mountains in the Sierra region cover almost 40% of Peru’s surface area,

The climate in Peru varies from region to region, from the dry and arid climate of the coast, to the cold climactic conditions of the mountains, and the wet and humid climate of the Amazonia region. Depending on when and where you intend to travel, check the weather reports and dress accordingly.

World heritage sites

There are 12 properties in Peru listed on the World Heritage List. You can view the listed properties here: (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/pe). Peru’s listed properties include:

Chan Chan Archaeological Zone, the site of what was the largest pre-Columbian city in South America

Qhapaq Ñan (Andean Road System), the intricate ancient road system that once spanned the length of the former Incan empire

Manú National Park, which covers an area of 1.5 million hectares and holds some 850 species of bird species.

Festivals & Events

Contemporary Peruvian culture is a rich syncretic mix of both Spanish and pre-Columbian native influences, with many festivals and events showcasing the country’s unique cultural traditions. Catholicism is deeply rooted in Peruvian society, with many religious occasions dotting the calendar – notable examples include Fiesta de las Cruces, which features parades of elaborately decorated crucifixes, and Día de Santa Rosa de Lima, which celebrates the canonisation of Santa Rosa de Lima, the first-native-born American saint canonised by the Catholic Church. Native traditions live on through events such as Inti Raymi, which is held on the winter celebration, and is held in honour of the Incan sun god (‘Inti’). Other notable events include the Mistura Culinary Festival and the Fiesta de la Vendimia (‘The Wine Festival’).

Eating & Drinking

Peruvian food is a fusion of native ingredients and foreign culinary influences. The main staples of Peruvian cuisine are corn, potatoes, quinoa and legumes, while rice and meat also heavily feature in Peruvian diets. Like elsewhere on the South American Pacific coast, ceviche (a stew made from seafood and citrus juices) is immensely popular, and can be found in restaurants all over the Peruvian coast. Potatoes are an important source of sustenance in Peru, and is a key ingredient in many dishes, including causa (potato casserole) and papas a la huancaina (potatoes in spicy cheese sauce). The multicultural nature of Peru shines through in dishes such as lomo saltado, a dish created by Chinese immigrants and made out of steak, red onions, chilli and hot chips.

Pisco Sour, an alcoholic drink made from pisco (brandy), lime juice, syrup, and bitters, is the national drink of Peru. It is held in such high regard in the country that a national holiday is held in its honour, National Pisco Sour Day. Other popular beverages include chica morada (a non-alcoholic drink made from boiling purple corn with pineapple skin, cinnamon, cloves, and sugar) and chica de jora (a type of beer made from jora corn).

Health & Safety

As of writing, smartraveller.gov.au advises travellers to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling through Peru. Crime is a significant problem in some of Peru’s major cities, so keep your valaubles close and pay attention to your personal security. Also, it is advised to avoid hailing taxis in the streets, and only booking taxis from a hotel or restaurant, or via a secure app.

Electrical Supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply in Peru runs at 220V and 60Hz. Peru uses the Type A and Type C electric plug types, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

Tour Reviews

Well balanced with city vs country, visits to remote dinosaur sites, town museums, a winery. The hands-on dinosaur dig and fossil preparation live-in at Lake Barraleas was superb and I could have spent more time there as we went out a lot. It was excellent with a great Argentinian team looking after us..

Argentina Dinosaur dig including Titanosaur small group tours

All guides were excellent. Each had done a lot of research on dinosaurs before we arrived and had a good sense of what we were after.

Accommodation exceeded expectations in most cases.

We were privileged to go where many tourists could not go but some of that was due to the presence of John Pickrell still we saw more and met more senior paleontologists that I had expected. All museums and other sites were a marvelous experience

Well balanced, with a great group leader in John Pickrell. He was extremely informative and had great contacts so we saw behind the scenes at museums. We covered a lot of distance but with 2-3 nights in a number of places had plenty of free time to do your own thing.

What is the time zone?

Peru has a single time zone, Peru Standard Time (UTC-5). Daylight savings are not observed in Peru.

Is tipping customary in Peru?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. Tipping is appreciated in Peru, with small tips for hotel staff, tour guides, and servers in upscale restaurants. In restaurants, a tip of around 10% is customary.

What is the internet access like in Peru?

Wifi should be freely accessible in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in urban areas, though connection speeds can vary, particularly in more isolated areas.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Peru?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Peru. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for Peru

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although some locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of soles in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Before departing on your trip, contact your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.

In addition, you will also see hundreds of sea lions resting at the beaches, sleeping on the rocks or swimming nearby. The islands also provide shelter to the shy Humboldt penguins which are usually seen at the entrances of small caves near the cliffs.

Following our tour, we return to the hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure to take advantage of the hotel’s facilities.

Alternatively, you may wish to book an optional tour to see the incredible Nazca lines by air.

The mystery surrounding the Nazca Lines enigma continues to go unanswered. Buckle up and get ready to be amazed by the splendour and magnificent art of the Nazca lines in the comfort of a fixed wing Grand Caravan Cessna aircraft . Unfolding beneath you are dozens of animal figures, trapezoids and hundreds of ruler-straight lines that lie across the rocky Nazca plateau, visible only from the air. Some say it is an ancient solar calendar. Others suggest the Lines acted as ritual pathways for religious processions. Still others believe it was just an ancient culture’s way of asking for water during a long drought.

Note: The Ministry of Culture touristic entrance ticket for the Nazca Lines must be paid locally. The current charge is PEN 47.00 (approx USD12.00) per person.

Day 4 Paracas Lima Arequipa

In the morning, after breakfast, you will be transferred approximately 4.5 hours by road to Lima airport in time for your included flight to Arequipa. A delightful colonial city, Arequipa is situated at the foot of El Misti Volcano, a snow-capped perfect cone of 5,822 metres. Known as the White City, Arequipa is teeming with fine Spanish buildings and wonderful natural landscape.

On arrival you will be transferred to your historic hotel located in front of the main square of Plaza de Armas.

Day 5 Arequipa

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a walking tour of the main historic sites of Arequipa. Visit the Plaza de Armas (Main square), one of the most beautiful and stunning of Peru. Here you will visit the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa with its neo classic style with French influences. We then take a visit to the Compañia de Jesus church, with its interior adorned with beautiful colonial paintings and golden altars. Finally, visit the local market of San Camilo as we taste our way through its exotic fruits, vegetables, and prepared dishes to get a better understanding of the culinary culture of Arequipa.

This evening enjoy a traditional dinner, Peruvian style, at a local picanteria. The restaurants in Arequipa are known as “Picanterias” a word that comes from “pick”, as people come together and sit around a table and “pick” from a large sharing plate filled with local specialties.

Day 6 Arequipa Colca Canyon

Leave Arequipa behind as we travel towards the Colca Canyon this morning. On the way we make a stop at Pampas Cañahuas (3,500m/11,482 Ft), a National Reserve where you may spot some Vicuñas and Alpacas that can be seen running freely on these high plateaus.

Continue your journey to the Colca Canyon as we ascend to the highest point of the trip (4,800 m /15,748 Ft). From here look over the incredible landscape across the Andes with the volcanoes Ubinas, Mismi, Misti, Chachani, Sabancaya (active) and Ampato all dotting the background. Arrive this afternoon at the quaint village of Chivay (3,600 m /11.811 Ft) where you will check into your charming hotel made up of rustic stone cottages located at the edge of the Canyon.  The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore the village on your own.

Day 7 Colca Canyon Puno

After breakfast, we travel towards the “Cruz Del Condor”, a natural lookout point where you can see Condors flying over the canyon and spectacular views of the canyon with hundreds of ancient agricultural terraces carved onto the slopes of the mountains.  Afterwards, you will return to the village of Chivay and travel approximately 4 hours towards the city of Puno, crossing the Altiplano (high Andean plateau).

Upon arrival into Puno, you will be dropped off at your hotel located in the historic centre of the city.  Located between the shores of Lake Titicaca and the mountains surrounding the city, Puno is the gateway to the famous floating islands of the Uros, an amazing archipelago of Totora islands, inhabited by the Uros, descendants of one of the oldest cultures of the continent.

Day 8 Puno Lake Titicaca

Start the day with a tour of Lake Titicaca. Sitting 3820 metres above sea level, it holds the title of highest navigable lake in the world. Hop in a motorboat and learn about the spiritual significance the lake holds for the Quechua while cruising across its waters. Stop off at Uros Titinos, a floating man-made islands made entirely from reeds and home to several families. Later, head to your homestay in the Lake Titicaca region. To get a better understanding of daily life, why not help your host family with some of their daily activities. Your hosts will be happy to teach you a few words of their language, Quechua, and a friendly game of soccer may also be on the cards!

Day 9 Lake Titicaca Puno

After breakfast, take a 1-hour boat ride to Taquile Island. The locals here make their livelihood out of textiles, with the women doing the spinning and men doing the knitting. Browse the handmade goods sold here including warm, high-quality items. Next, take an uphill trek for about an hour to visit the main area of the island. After a brief stay, the boat will take you back to Puno (about 3 hours).

Day 10 Puno Cusco

We’ll set off for Cusco today, a ten-hour bus journey. This is a gorgeous scenic journey where along the way, we’ll visit charming landmarks rich with natural beauty and history including the Pukara Museum, and "La Raya" the highest point on this route at 4335 metres high. Afterwards you will descend towards the picturesque "village of Sicuani", where you will enjoy an included buffet lunch at a local restaurant, which is served with native products of this region. Later on, you’ll continue your tour at the famous "Inca Temple of Racchi", considered the only Inca place where visitors can see circular constructions, and walls of mud bricks, something you won't see anywhere else on your trip. Then, continue to the traditional town of Andahuaylillas, where you will visit an impressive Cathedral built in the colonial era. Finally, you will arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon.

Cusco is the continent's oldest continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Inca Empire for two centuries before the Spanish built their first capital here. Today Cusco is a fascinating combination of both cultures. Inca-built walls line the central streets and many of the elegant colonial buildings are built on or around Inca foundations. This is a city steeped in history, tradition and legend and is a perfect base for explorations into the Inca world or to enjoy a range of outdoor activities.

Day 11 Cusco

In the morning, set out to discover some of Cusco's lesser-known sights on a guided walking tour. Visit the facade of Qoricancha temple, San Pedro market, the main square, 12 Angled Stone, Regocijo Square and San Blas Square. End the walking tour at Xapiri Café where you will be able to taste traditional snacks

Day 12 Cusco Sacred Valley

In the morning, travel approximately 2 hours through the Sacred Valley on the outskirts of Cusco. Known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, the lush, fertile valley has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Maize crops can be seen surrounding the river and covering the terraces carved high into the valley walls. You will head to a community in the Valley to learn about local lifestyle and activities and if our visit coincides with market day you can spend time browsing the stalls in search of hand-painted beads or warm ponchos and maybe practising some of the local language, Quechua. You will enjoy regional lunch with the community. Later you will continue the tour visiting the town of Ollantaytambo which has been built over an ancient Inca town. This is a magnificent example of Inca urban planning and one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish. Ollantaytambo's archaeological site is located to the east of the Plaza de Armas. The upper terraces of this site offer great photo opportunities of the squared grid town below.

By the afternoon, you will be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Day 13 Sacred Valley Moray Aguas Calientes

Today enjoy a guided trip to Maras Salt Ponds and the circular terraces of Moray. On the way you will see some of the most scenic spots in the Sacred Valley. First, visit the ancient salt ponds near the village of Maras, where salty springs emerge from the hillside and the Incas built terraces to capture the flows and harvest salt. Continue to Moray, where huge circular agricultural terraces were built by the Incas on limestone sinks served to plant various crops. It is said to have a cosmological significance, however, the Incas used the terraces as an agricultural laboratory to determine the optimum conditions for each species in varying altitudes.

After your tour, head to the local train station to board the tourist train towards Aguas Calientes, a modern little town close to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. The train ride to Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful journeys that visitors can experience in Peru. After passing the Sacred Valley of the Incas the train starts to descend gradually along the edge of the Urubamba River, till finally reach the cloud forest.

After approximately 1 hour 45 minutes you will have arrived in Aguas Calientes town, where you will be taken to your hotel for the night.

Dinner is included at the hotel.

Day 14 Aguas Calientes Machu Picchu Aguas Calientes Ollantaytambo Cusco

After breakfast, you will be taken to Machu Picchu, the impressive Lost City of the Incas. Upon arrival, we’ll enter the archaeological zone of Machu Picchu and the tour guide will show you the most important sectors of this great Inca City, such as the great Intiwatana (solar clock) and the Sun Temple, among others. Machu Picchu is divided into two sectors, the urban sector in the northern part and the agricultural sector on the south-east side.

Now the most recognisable icon of the Inca civilisation, Machu Picchu was long thought to be legendary. Then, in 1911, explorer Hiram Bingham stumbled upon its remains. At 2430 metres above sea level, Machu Picchu is in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing creation of the Inca Empire at the height of their reign. The stonework has to be seen up close to truly comprehend its intricate beauty. Giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments.

After the tour, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes by bus before taking the tourist train back to Ollantaytambo town, followed by a transfer to your hotel in Cusco.

Day 15 Cusco Puerto Maldonado Amazon Jungle

Today you will be transferred to Cusco airport for your included flight to Puerto Maldonado, your gateways to the incredible Amazon Jungle and coined the Capital of Biodiversity. Begin your authentic Amazon adventure with a 25-minute boat ride navigating the clay-coloured Madre de Dios River to reach hidden jungle lodge, Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. Settle into your stylish stilted wooden cabaña built in a former cacao and rubber plantation located in an enchanting and serene lush setting within 819 hectares of natural rainforest. Enjoy lunch at the lodge before exploring the depths of the jungle on foot. Take a walk along the Concepcion Trails, winding through the property’s nature trails for an immersive introduction to the intricate ecosystems of the Amazon basin. Backed by the protected Tambopata National Reserve, Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion harbours primary and secondary rainforest teeming with exotic wildlife and tropical plants. At dusk witness the enchanting transformation of the rainforest from a diurnal to a nocturnal environment on a guided Twilight River boat ride, as animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the shadows of the night. See if you can spot caiman lurking on the riverbanks and stars of the southern hemisphere.  In the evening enjoy à la carte dining, drawing on local Amazon ingredients for inspiration. Retreat to your cabaña room to listen to the curious calls and croaks of the rainforest at night.

Day 16 Amazon Jungle

After an early breakfast, we make the most of our day by heading out to visit Lake Sandoval, a glassy, ox-bow lake located inside the protected Tambopata National Reserve, reached via a sun-dappled rainforest trail. Board a dug-out wooden canoe to quietly paddle through a stream and glide onto Lake Sandoval, surrounded by picture-perfect palms. This lake is home to many species of birds, the endangered giant river otter, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles, black caimans amongst others. Return to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion in time for lunch and a rest.

In the afternoon we recommend climbing the exhilarating Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. The Canopy Walkway is a sophisticated 344 metre (1,135 feet) network of seven ecologically constructed hanging suspension bridges, strung between eight treetop observation platforms above the forest floor. This is an unforgettable opportunity to observe the rainforest from the rooftop and gain a sense of its size. Keep an eye out for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. It’s possible to extend your elevated stay with sunset drinks from atop a tower – or spend a once-in-a-lifetime night in a specially-designed treehouse cabin with surprising comforts (additional cost applies).

After dinner, you can venture out onto the Hidden Forest excursion. Armed with flashlights, as your senses heighten to the movements and sounds in the undergrowth of the forest, keep an eye for species that only emerge during nighttime.

Day 17 Amazon Jungle Puerto Maldonado Lima

Enjoy your last morning waking to the sounds of the rainforest as parakeets chatter away in the trees and monkeys swing through the treetops. After breakfast we travel by boat for the 25-minute return trip along the Madre de Dios River until arriving at the airport for your included flight to Lima.

Upon arrival at Lima, you will be transferred to your hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure

Day 18 Lima Guayaquil

Today you will be transferred to Lima airport for your flight to Guayaquil, your gateway to the Galapagos. On arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel located in the heart of the city where the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 19 Guayaquil Santa Cruz Island

This morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to the Galapagos Islands.  (Flight tickets and departure time will be advised locally on your arrival in Guayaquil). Your guide will pick you up from the airport and continue on to visit the Highlands of the Island where you can observe the giant tortoise roaming in a natural habitat. Make the most of great picture opportunities with this endangered species, endemic to the Galapagos before continuing to your hotel in Puerto Ayora.

Later, head to the Charles Darwin Research Station, located in Puerto Ayora. The research station plays a crucial role in the conservation and preservation of the Galápagos Islands' delicate ecosystem. Here, you'll learn about ongoing research projects, breeding programs for endangered species, and the conservation efforts to protect the islands' biodiversity. One of the main highlights of the Charles Darwin Research Station is the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center. You'll have the opportunity to see these magnificent creatures up close and learn about the conservation efforts to protect and reintroduce them to their natural habitats.

From 01 August 2024 the fee is US$200 per person) Both payments are made in USD cash.

Day 20 Santa Cruz Island outer island excursion Santa Cruz Island

After breakfast, you will embark on a full day tour to one of the beautiful uninhabited islands of Santa Fe, South Plaza, North Seymour or Bartolomé (subject to scheduling).   Your excursion will travel by speed boat - the trip takes approximately 2 hours each way.

Your expert naturalist guide will introduce you to the islands unique wildlife which may include endemic species such as Galapagos penguins, land iguanas, Darwin's finches, blue-footed Boobies and many more.

You will have the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Discover the marine life and vibrant coral reefs.

You’ll then return to Puerto Ayora by late afternoon.

Day 21 Santa Cruz Island San Cristobal Island

After breakfast, visit Tortuga Bay.  You will take a guided walk (45 minutes each way) to take in the scenery and wildlife.  Visitors can often encounter marine iguanas, Galápagos crabs, sea lions, and a variety of bird species such as pelicans and finches.

Once you reach Playa Brava, please be aware that swimming is not allowed here due to the presence of hazardous currents. For those wishing to swim, continue walking along the beach until you discover a trail leading through the mangrove forest. This path will take you to Playa Mansa, a sheltered bay where you can safely swim and relish the cool shade provided by the mangroves.

This afternoon, transfer to the pier and board a speed-boat to San Cristobal Island (approximately 2.5 hours ride). Upon arrival, you will enjoy a walking tour in the beautiful Puerto Baquerizo to enjoy the local life.

Day 22 San Cristobal Island Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) San Cristobal Island

This morning you will visit one of the most iconic sites in the Galapagos Islands:  Kicker Rock or “Leon Dormido”, an amazing rock formation just 90 minutes from San Cristobal Island. This incredible landmark is a remnant of a vertical tuff cone formation with an altitude of 500 feet from the Pacific Ocean, it is considered as one of the best snorkelling sites in the Archipelago.

Erosion has given the formation its characteristic shape of a shoe (hence the name Kicker Rock) and others see a sleeping lion from above, the reason why in Spanish it is called “Leon Dormido”.

Snorkelling in the vicinity of the rock is truly an unforgettable experience! You will be able to spot marine iguanas, sea turtles, rays, Galapagos sharks, schools of colourful fish and, with some luck, hammerhead sharks. Also in the crevasses of the rock, you can encounter blue-footed boobies, masked-boobies and frigate birds.

Return to San Cristobal and your hotel for a well-deserved  short  resting time. In the afternoon, visit  La Loberia beach, a scenic beach filled with large colonies curious sea-lions, marine iguanas, frigate birds and more.

Note: in some instances visits to Kicker Rock will be restricted.  For groups not able to visit Kicker Rock, a visit to Isla Lobos will be provided as an alternative.  Isla Lobos is named after the numerous sea lions (lobos marinos in Spanish) that inhabit the island.  You'll also have opportunities to observe a variety of bird species, including blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and brown pelicans. Once you arrive at Isla Lobos, your naturalist guide will lead you on guided walks through the island's unique vegetation and provide opportunities for close encounters with the wildlife. You will have time to do snorkeling with unique species and then sail to an isolated beach, to relax on its sand, or swim or do some more snorkeling.

Day 23 San Cristobal Island Quito

This morning visit to the Interpretation Center, which takes you through the history and settlement of the islands. Visitors can enjoy expositions on natural history, human history and conservation. The natural history explains the different natural facts, such as the volcanic origin of the islands, the distance between the mainland, its currents, the special climate, the arrival of different species, etc. The exposition room of Human History gives a chronological overview of the discovery and colonization of the Galapagos.

The second section describes the reality of today's Galapagos: the problems and the struggle of several institutions and individuals to conserve Galapagos. The Center also has an outdoor theater and a cinema.

At the appropriate time you will be picked up  and transferred to the airport in time to board your flight to the capital of Ecuador, Quito. Upon arrival, your guide will welcome you and drive to your cosy centrally located hotel.  The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore the surroundings.

Day 24 Quito

Today you are at leisure to enjoy the quaint city at your own pace. The Ecuador capital is constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city and is known for its well-preserved colonial centre, rich with 16th- and 17th-century churches and other structures blending European, Moorish and indigenous styles.

Alternatively, you may wish to join an optional full day tour of this fascinating city.

Explore Quito's famous Old Town, considered as Human Heritage Patrimony and the largest Colonial district in all of South America. Along the way you'll visit “La Compañia de Jesus” Church, surely one of the most beautiful churches in South America, and also the charming “La Ronda” Street, the most popular colonial street for centuries in the centre of the City.

Afterwards, you will head to the north of the city for about 50 minutes to the also famous "Middle of the World" with its symbolic Monument and Compound with many open-air exhibits, cultural displays, shops and typical food Restaurants. The Monument was built during the XVII century when a French expedition travelled to Ecuador to define the precise location of the Equatorial Line.

Your guide will tell you all the important aspects of the Compound and its importance to researchers and scientist around the World; you will enter the Monument where you find many displays of the Ecuadorian rich and ancient culture and human history, also visit the on-site “Inti-Ñan” Museum where you can witness and participate in active experiments that prove that you are indeed at the Centre of the Earth.

Day 25 Quito Home

Your tour comes to an end today after breakfast.  At the appropriate time, make your own way to the airport.

Alternatively, you can pre book a private departure transfer to the airport.  Further details can be found under the ‘Upgrade Options’.

Check out: Check-out time is generally between 10am-12pm. If you have booked your departing flight later in the day, you are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or alternatively please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time (extra charges may apply).
