Best Things to do in Hackney: An Insider’s Area Guide

Best Things to do in Hackney: An Insider’s Area Guide

Love This? Save and Share!

Looking for the best things to do in Hackney? Great, you are in the right place.

This is one of London’s most diverse and unique boroughs. Hackney has a strong community feel and is well-known for its unmatched food scene and bustling nightlife.

Located at the heart of the East End, Hackney was not always the vibrant place it is today. It was once a series of small hamlets and farmlands that supplied food to the city of London.

The rich marshes and woodland saw it become popular among Medieval Royals as an area that was close to London with a tranquil outdoor life and exceptional natural beauty.

Over the years, Hackney has become a cosmopolitan area that’s a global destination for arts, culture, and nightlife. This means you’ll find loads of fun and quirky things to do in London’s most trendy borough.

This comprehensive guide covers all you need to know to explore Hackney in all its glory.

Things to do in Hackney

Delving into the spots you shouldn’t miss.

Victoria Park

Victoria Park

London’s oldest park plays host to several interesting monuments on its grounds. This includes two alcoves from the Old London Bridge, brought to the park in 1831 after its demolition.

Victoria Park opened in 1845 and has won a Green Flag Award consecutively each year since 2010. Wander along the paths meandering next to the Regent and Hertford Union Canals and stop for a moment at the picturesque boating lake.

The park is also a great spot to set up a picnic and home to some of London’s most raucous summer festivals.

Viktor Wynd Museum

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Last Tuesday Society (@thelasttuesdaysociety)

The Viktor Wynd Museum is a museum of curiosities, fine art, and unnatural history. A visit to this rather strange and macabre museum is one of the most unusual things to do in Hackney, London.

When you think of a museum, whatever comes to mind is probably not what you’ll get here. Curated by Viktor Wynd himself, you’ll find an eclectic mix of, well, oddities. A lock of Elvis’s hair and a half-eaten biscuit by David Attenborough are among the stranger things you’ll see. While British surrealist etchings form part of the ‘fine art’ section.

All you need to enter this weird and wonderful world is £10 and an open mind.

Once you’re done, feel free to digest what you’ve just seen in the upstairs Absinthe and Cocktail bar with a stiff drink – you may need it!

Hackney Marshes

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney Marshes Centre (@hackney_marshes)

A post shared by Hackney Marshes Centre (@hackney_marshes)

An inner-city gem, the Hackney Marshes is an area of grassland on the western bank of the River Lee and leads up to the Hackney Stadium. A sports lover’s haven, the marshes have great facilities for all types of activities.

From rugby, football (it’s known as the home of Sunday football), and cricket pitches with changing rooms and toilets to a rooftop terrace and pavilion are just a few things on offer. If you’d like to use the facilities, be sure to check out prices and book.

You may have heard of “Hackney Beach,” the nickname for the water marshes found here. People often swim in the water, but you should really avoid the temptation to take a dip due to it being polluted.

Hackney City Farm

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney City Farm (@hackneycityfarm_official)

Hackney City Farm is one of the best things to do in Hackney with kids, although even adults will enjoy the visit. Experience rural life in the heart of the city. You can pet goats, feed chickens, and melt over baby lambs. Children are also taught about vegetable gardens and can plant their own seeds in the garden.

Before heading home, drop by the farm shop for fresh produce and eggs.

Museum of the Home

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Museum of the Home (@museumofthehome)

The Museum of the Home boasts centuries of interior design from 1600 to the present. You can marvel at various home and home life scenarios with a series of 11-period room displays.

Located in a stunning Grade I-listed building in Shoreditch, this is a great place to explore the history of Britain’s domestic interiors through several permanent displays, and a number of temporary exhibitions.

Entry is free, and if you have any interest in social history, or the evolution of how we see home throughout the years, this is a must-visit.

St Augustine Tower

View this post on Instagram A post shared by St. Augustine’s Tower (@staugustinestower)

Standing majestically in St John’s Church Gardens in Hackney central is St Augustine Tower.

The Tower is what remains of the 16th-century parish church of Hackney, St Augustine. The gorgeous 16th-century clock has remained on the Tower’s third floor since around 1608.

The St Augustine Tower is present in the coat of arms of the London Borough of Hackney, showing its symbolism and importance to the area. The Tower is impressive, and a visit to Hackney’s oldest remaining building is essential if you’re a history buff.

The tower is open to the public on the final Sunday of every month between 2 and 4:30pm.

Sutton House

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sutton House NT (@suttonhousent)

Sutton House – a Grade-II listed Tudor Manor House and National Trust found in the centre of Hackney, is worth a visit. The building was built in 1535 for Ralph Sadlier, a courtier of Henry VIII, and has seen many different residents since then.

From anarchist squatters in the 1980s to hosting various gigs – this house has seen it all. Today you can tour the building with Tudor finishes and carved fireplaces. The tranquil courtyard is also a magnificent place for a silent, reflective moment.

Mare Street

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mare Street Market (@marestreetmarket)

The energetic pulse of Mare Street is reason in itself to visit. Along the street, you’ll find fabulous wining and dining options and Mare Street Market . This street offers it all; a glimpse into London’s history, an artisan cocktail and a supermarket shop.

Give yourself a little while to explore what’s on offer from Rebel Rebel Flowers and retro record store, Stranger Than Paradise . If you’re after some more ink, Nobody’s Business Tattoo is perfect, while guys can get their grooming fix at Well Groomed Barber – and ladies can have their hair cut or blow-dried every Tuesday with Hannah.

Of course, no respecting market is complete without food, and Mare Street hits that nail on the head emphatically, with the Deli & Bottle Shop, as well as a bar, open kitchen, and dining room.

Hackney Markets

Black Owned Hackney Market

Hackney has some great markets, which are also some of the best places to do some shopping. If you are travelling from afar, you’ll find charming curios to gift those back home. If you’re a local, you’ll find unique vintage goods and trinkets.

Oh, and we can’t forget the delicious street food and produce that vendors whip up at most of the markets. From weekend markets to monthly affairs, these are some of the best markets to visit in Hackney:

  • Chatsworth Road Market: Runs every Sunday and is a popular market for families. Keep the kids entertained at Lolly’s toy and homeware accessories while you remain satisfied with the wide variety of food on offer
  • Hackney Flea Market: Running monthly, here you’ll find the best vintage goods and furniture
  • Ridley Road Market: The freshest fruit and vegetables are on offer at Ridley Market in Dalston, running daily – except Sundays
  • Broadway Market: A Saturday street food market foodies shouldn’t miss
  • Bohemia Place Market: Showcasing London’s best black-owned eats, artisan traders, and more every Friday night
  • Mare Street Market: Already mentioned above, but worth cementing in the memory

Take an Ohros Candle Making Classes

View this post on Instagram A post shared by OHROS®️ (@ohroslondon)

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Hackney, how about getting your creative juices flowing? There’s plenty of that to be found in Hackney but one of our top favourites are the candle making classes at Ohros .

No matter if you’re already a knowledgeable candlemaker or a total novice, over the course of a few hours Orhos’ charming owner Georgia will teach you everything you need to know to create your very own scented candle.

That’s comprehensive lessons in picking scented oils, and how to incorporate them into a candle you’ll shape from scratch. The classes are really fun and totally relaxing, perfect for an afternoon’s unwinding.

Check Out the Peace Mural

London is adorned with some amazing pieces of street art , yet few have endured as long as the Hackney Peace Mural.

Created by local artist Ray Walker at the height of the Cold War, the peace mural features a diverse cast of characters marching for peace against the threat of the nuclear bomb.

The mural was painted by Mike Jones and Anna Walker, Ray’s wife, in 1985 after the untimely death of Walker the year before aged just 39, and remains as relevant today as it was four decades ago.

VR Gaming at Other World

Virtual Reality gaming is taking off in a big way, and Hackney is home to one of the best immersive gaming centres in London.

Other World is an immersive VR gaming experience where you enter a pod on your own, but can play with or against friends, colleagues, or dates in exciting virtual worlds.

There are 16 of the world’s finest VR games and virtual worlds to choose from, including a digital theme park. The immersive experience doesn’t simply extend to the graphics, the pod will has wind, heat, and rumble effects to really take you into a new world.

Explore new planets, take out zombies at will, and battle ancient spirits while having the time of your life.

Hackney Community Sauna and Baths

Imagine being able to have a fully-fledged spa experience without having to leave East London and check into an upmarket hotel. Well, Hackney Community Sauna and Baths gives you that exact experience for less than a tenner.

With a 60-minute morning session costing just £8.50, you can take advantage of one of six outdoor communal saunas if you’re heading their solo or with a mate or two, or a 6-person sauna for group bookings.

Also included are ice-cold plunges in either chilled bathtubs, or converted whisky barrels. As sensations go, you’ll be sure to squeal at first as you get into the cold water from the sauna before you begin to settle and really feel the benefit of the ice-cold immersion.

Other treatments are available including a one hour leaf whisking session in a sauna, massage treatments, and other classes including breathwork, life drawing inside a sauna, and sauna yoga.

Board Games and Burgers

Draughts is an awesome board game cafe where you can book a table and gain unlimited access to their extensive (and we mean extensive!) board games library. Whether its a simple game of Connect 4 or Scrabble, or an in-depth multi-player immersive RPG experience that’ll take all day, this is the place to go.

They hold regular events, and set menus that include food, drinks, and even a dedicated games maker to curate your game-playing experience throughout the evening.

Check out their Games Library to get a flavour of what you could be playing, and enjoy some of the best burgers and beers in Hackney while you play.

Eating & Drinking

The best spots to grab a drink and bite to eat.

Crate Brewery

View this post on Instagram A post shared by CRATE Brewery (@cratebrewery)

Of all things to do in Hackney Wick, a visit to Crate Brewery should be at the top of your list. Located on the riverside, this beer garden with quirky views of the ever-changing street art on the Hackney Wick Canal is full of character.

Opening in 2012, this was one of the first breweries in Hackney and they set a high standard for those to follow. So, grab a pint and a pizza, and enjoy an afternoon at one of the best breweries in London .

Hackney Brewery

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney Brewery (@hackneybrewery)

Calling all beer lovers, Hackney Brewery’s taproom has 20 direct-draw taps serving the freshest Hackney beer. This gives you the chance to taste many drinks until you find your favourite. There isn’t a restaurant on the premises, but Pizza Lovers (formerly Milo’s Pizza) rock up on Thursdays through Sunday to satisfy your culinary cravings.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Angelina (@angelina.dalston)

This trendy restaurant gem in the heart of Dalston is sure to impress those taste buds and senses with its unique flavours and chic interior design. Creating a mash-up of Japanese and Italian cuisine, you won’t see dishes Angelina’s offers on many other menus.

You can grab the £64 10-course Kaiseki menu, which is absolutely to die for, or the 4-course Omakase Menu, which is equally fantastic, and just £40. It comes with a wine pairing for an additional £35, which we think is great value.

Service is down-to-earth, and this, mixed with the relaxed atmosphere and unmatched food, make for a great restaurant experience.

Night Tales

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Night Tales (@nighttalesldn)

While we are talking about fun things to do in Hackney, Night Tales has to make an appearance. This trendy Hackney space serves up in house pizza, cocktails and drinks, and some big-name DJs. So what exactly is this exhilarating sounding place anyway?

It’s a large (300 sqm) terrace consisting the pizza restaurant and multiple bars serving top class cocktails, and an area for dancing. It’s a great place to go for afternoon drinks, especially if you feel like dancing the night away later on.

Some of the DJ gigs are free, and others you’ll need to pay for, so be sure to check out what’s on when you plan on visiting.

The 10 Best Things To Do in London's Hackney Neighborhood

In Pictures Ltd./Corbis via Getty Images

The East London neighborhood of Hackney is a hidden gem, often overlooked by travelers for flashier areas like Covent Garden and Notting Hill. But the neighborhood, located northeast of Shoreditch, has plenty to see, do and, most importantly, eat. Whether you're interested in visiting a popular outdoor market or exploring the paths along Regent's Canal, Hackney is worth discovering.

Stroll through Broadway Market

Alex Sagre/Getty Images

Every Saturday from 9 a.m., Broadway Market welcomes locals and visitors to its endless stalls, which sells street food, clothes, old vinyl, and some of the most mouth-watering sweet treats you'll ever see. It's the perfect place to grab lunch on the go (or sit and eat in nearby London fields), or the restaurants along Broadway welcome guests in for brunch and lunch. Look for The Frenchie, which sells confit duck burgers and Thai on the Fly, which serves up the best pad thai in town. Around the corner, look for Netil Market, home to boutique shops, and a few more food stalls (as well as happening outdoor bars in the summertime). There's no wrong way to do Broadway Market as long as you arrive before it closes at 5 p.m.

Picnic in London Fields

London Fields spans a large area of Hackney, stretching from Broadway Market north to Hackney Central. The park is popular throughout the year, but most of all, during London's beloved sunny days. During the summer, the grass is covered with people, eating and drinking, and laying the sun. The park sometimes allows the use of portable or disposable barbecues, which means you can grill up a few burgers while relaxing in the fields. On Saturdays, grab the food from Broadway Market, or pick up a picnic at one of the nearby shops.

Pet Animals at Hackney City Farm

Who doesn't love adorable animals? While you might not expect central London to be home to a working farm, Hackney City Farm brings country life into the city. It's open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and offers free entry to those who want to meet the goats, sheep, and pigs (among other furry creatures). There's also a garden and orchard, and the farm hosts weekly special events and activities. Visitors can even take home eggs, grains, cheese, and more from the farm's Get Loose Foods, which is open on-site several days a week. On Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., kids can volunteer with the Mini Farmers Club to get up close and personal with the animals.

Swim in London Fields Lido

Open year-round, London Fields Lido is a 50-meter Olympic-size swimming pool that is thankfully heated for use during the colder months. The pool offers lane swimming, as well as swimming lessons for adults and kids, and it features a massive area for sun-bathing (when the sun comes out, of course). There's also a cafe with coffee, drinks, and snacks. Visitors can even book a swimming ticket online in advance to help beat the lines. Be sure to check the opening hours before heading to the pool.

Dine at Mama Shelter London

Mama Shelter London

London recently got its edition of hip hotel brand Mama Shelter, which has brought with it a vibrant communal restaurant that adds an affordable, fun dining option to the neighborhood. There's also a bar, with an outdoor courtyard, and generally, it's a great place to grab brunch, lunch, or dinner (the massive kebabs are highly recommended). After dinner, book into one of the two karaoke rooms hidden in the basement, an unexpected find in East London.

See Comedy at Hackney Empire

TripSavvy / Gautier Houba

Hackney Empire was initially built in 1901 as a music hall, and the venue remains an essential spot in the neighborhood today. The theater hosts everything from comedy shows to live music to special events and workshops, and it's a great alternative to the far more expensive West End shows. Don't miss The Empire Bar, located next door, which serves up food and drinks. It's best to leave large bags at the hotel as the Hackney Empire operates a bag check policy for larger items.

Visit the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities

Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images

Those who are easily horrified should steer clear of the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, a small collection of oddities that includes everything from dodo bones to a two-headed kitten. The museum is also home to a cocktail bar, known as "the World's Most Curious Cocktail Bar," where visitors can have a drink under the watchful of the displays. Be sure to book in advance online, especially when visiting on a Saturday, which is the museum's most crowded day. Children are permitted before 5 p.m., but parents should be warned that some of the items are not meant for young eyes.

Go Vintage Shopping

Hackney is known for its many vintage shops, which are found throughout the neighborhood. A few of the most popular are Paper Doll Vintage Boutique, which also hosts events, and Arch 389, which sells furniture and clothes out of a railway arch under the Overground. The Market Cartel is another good spot to scour, with clothes from the '50s through '80s for sale on its overstuffed racks. If you're after even more bargain hunting, Hackney is also home to several outlet stores, including the massive Burberry Outlet, where you can score a classic trench for a steep discount.

Shop Violet Bakery

Chris McGrath/Getty Images

Long before pastry chef Claire Ptak made the headlines by creating a wedding cake for Harry and Meghan, she made a name for herself in East London by baking some of the most delicious pastries and cakes around. Commoners can shop her wares at Violet Bakery, a short walk from the Hackney Central Overground station. It's a small, intimate shop with a few tables, and it's worth picking up a few things to go after you taste test the treats.

Explore Regent's Canal

TOLGA AKMEN/AFP via Getty Images

Regent's Canal extends across London, but one of the most picturesque stretches can be found in Hackney. There are plenty of entrances to the canal's towpath, where walkers, runners, and cyclists can enjoy the peaceful views. Stop by one of the waterside cafes or restaurants for a respite. OMBRA, off Cambridge Heath Road, serves up food and cocktails (perfect for an Aperol Spritz in the summer). Visitors can also hop on board one of the boats for a cruise down the canal or rent a canoe at The Milk Float, a floating bar, and cafe with cow-themed boats.

15 Things to do in Hackney

Hackney is considered one of London’s coolest areas. It’s the heart of music, youth culture and creativity. The magic of the East can be found on every pavement, around every corner and inside every building.

Rio cinema Take in the Art Deco Decor at the Rio Cinema

Visitors to the Rio cinema in Dalston will experience wonderful art deco exterior and interior décor which largely remains as you would have found it in the 1930s. The Rio is one of the largest independent cinemas in London, screening a variety of movies, from modern-day new releases through to community-made films.

For movie fans on a budget Monday screenings are at reduced prices, while the Sunday double bill offers two films for the price of one. Head to the Rio café where you will find offerings of locally sourced food and drink, as well as rare treats from further afield.

Hackney Picturehouse Watch the Big Screen at Hackney Picturehouse

Converted into a cinema in 2011, this former library offers an impressively designed interior for visitors to enjoy. There are five screens to choose from which includes East London’s biggest screen. As well as movies the Picturehouse stages theatre, ballet, live music and opera.

Why not head to their café-bar on Mare Street which fits in perfectly with the bustling hub which is Hackney. You can enjoy snacks and main meals, catering for different dietary requirements, before catching a movie on the big screen.

Hackney Empire Spend a Night at the Theatre

If you want to get your fill of live entertainment then Hackney can satisfy your appetite. Hackney Empire is a huge venue, originally constructed in 1901, by architect Frank Matcham.

It attracts some big names and productions (when he was alive and kicking, Charlie Chaplin walked the stage). On the smaller and more modern side, is the Arcola Theatre, a converted paint factory which is great if you’re strapped for cash – they have pay-what-you-can for tickets on Tuesday.

Broadway Market Spend a Lazy Sunday Morning at Broadway Market

It might be full of crowds, but Broadway Market is at its best on the weekend. The market will be on top form, with hot food, fresh vegetables and local produce up for grabs (they also have the most amazing Scotch eggs).

The pubs and cafes down the Broadway have a great reputation and bookworms will be in their element in the Broadway Bookshop which has a huge selection. If you’re after a recommendation then ask the owner Jane Howe – what she doesn’t know about books isn’t worth knowing.

Fassett Square Live Like a Soap Star on Fassett Square

Telly addicts and soap opera fans need to take a trip to Fassett Square. This square was the inspiration for the Eastenders set, Albert Square.

Although you may not find a Queen Vic pub, or a crazy Cat Slater crying in the street, you can find a nice spot in the communal garden and sulk about love, life and family until the credits role.

Hackney Museum Learn All About Hackney in Hackney Museum

Walking the streets gives you a good idea of how Hackney life is today, but if you want to learn about its past then visit the Hackney Museum.

You’ll discover all there is to know and uncover all the dark secrets, through interviews, artefacts and archives.

It never gets too busy here, so don’t worry about skipping it at peak times and don’t go away without a picture of the knitted town model, it’s absolutely adorable.

Hackney Walk Grab a Bargain at the Hackney Walk

This isn’t the largest collection of designer shops in London, but it could be the best.

If The Burberry Factory Shop is a little out your price range (yeah, I hear ya) then get your teeth into the likes of Nike and Matchesfashion.

It’s easy to navigate and it doesn’t get too manic if you’re not a lover of crowds.

Sutton House Get Spooked Out at Sutton House

This Tudor house was originally built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadler, a colleague of that lovely King, Henry VII. As one of the oldest domestic buildings in Hackney, it’s not surprising there are a few ghost stories levitating around.

The most famous ghost is believed to be Frances Machell, nicknamed the White Lady, who has passed through the bedrooms since she died in the house while delivering twins. Her friend, the Blue Lady, also haunts the bedrooms waking people in the dead of night by shaking their beds (yikes!).

If you’re feeling brave, don’t leave without seeing the squatters art from the 1980s and the Grange sculpture by Daniel Lobb in the Breaker’s Yard – it’s guaranteed to give you goosebumps even if the ghosts don’t.

Oval Space Dance Away at the Oval Space

Oval Space is one of the borough’s most beloved venues, it hosts international DJs more often than I change my socks (which is very often – just so we’re clear).

Inside it’s not much of a looker, but if you head out onto the decking there is the perfect view of the oval gas holders (where the space gets its name).

You’ll be gagging to take a picture so make sure your phone is fully charged and there’s enough memory for a quick snap. On your visit take a trip to the bathroom – the graffiti makes a very interesting read – trust me!

St Augustine’s Tower Climb St Augustine’s Tower and Peer onto the Rooftops of Hackney

You may need to keep your eyes peeled for St Augustine’s Tower. Although it’s tall, it can be easy to miss hiding behind the betting office in the town centre.

The Grade 1-listed tower was built way, way, way back in 1292, making it the oldest building in Hackney and why it appears on the Borough’s coat of arms.

The view from the top is sublime and if you’re lucky enough to get inside (it’s only open to the public on the last Sunday of every month), then take note of the graffiti on the walls, there are some ancient skulls and hourglasses on the stone next to the entrance.

Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art and Natural History Be Gobsmacked by the Bizarre at the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art and Natural History

It’s difficult to walk past the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art and Natural History and not wonder what lies behind the mysterious shop front. If you’re brave enough to step over the threshold then there is a weird and wonderful world to be discovered.

I won’t give too much away, but if you’re dying to sit next to a giant bear or see some Dodo bones then this is your lucky day. They also serve cocktails if you can handle sticking around long enough to finish a drink.

Hackney City Farm Experience Farm Life at Hackney City Farm

If you don’t want to stumble across farm life in the middle of the city, then I’m not sure we can be friends (I’m totally kidding, I’m always looking for new friends!).

Hackney City farm is full of animals and wildlife and it’s the best place to discover the smell of fresh manure. It may sound a bit gross, but it makes a welcome change from exhaust fumes and people on the underground – I swear.

The cafe is really cute and the beehives and bee workshops are so un-bee-lievable, you won’t be able to stop buzzing about them!

Hackney Wick Experience at Hackney Wick

Hackney Wick was a predominantly industrial area until the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park made it the trendy place it is today.

The canals provide a strong boating community and many of the barges are used as bookshops, pubs and shops.

The canals also provide a great walk and you can stumble across open studios or underground parties (if you time it right). Look out for Fish Island on a Friday night – you might be able to bag yourself an invite.

Beyond Retro Shop Ethically at the Vintage Beyond Retro

If you’re hunting down a second-hand piece or a vintage gem, then Hackney is a good place to start. The best of the best is Beyond Retro, a huge vintage warehouse on the Northside of Dalston Kingsland station. They have a couple scattered across the city, but here you’ll find the greatest collection of jackets.

Museum of the Home A Walk Through Time at the Museum of the Home

Situated in a row of former almshouses in Hoxton, the Museum of the Home offers a fascinating look at domestic life through the ages. The museum was opened in 1914 and the rooms hold items dating back to the 17th century. Take a walk through rooms lovingly recreated from different periods of history.

Outside the museum is just as welcoming. Here you will find period gardens to match the periods depicted in the building, which in addition to the herb garden adds to a feeling of a little green oasis within the heart of the city.

And Traveling the World

Lady’s 7 Things to Do in Hackney, London

When I moved to London, Shoreditch was the city’s capital of cool. All the edgiest bars and restaurants were there, and it was the place to go for a night out. But a decade on, other London neighborhoods have challenged the area for that title. Notably, Hackney. So today I bring you A Lady in London’s guide to the best things to do in Hackney.

Things to Do in Hackney, London

Things to Do in Hackney, London

This area to the northeast of Shoreditch has been home to hipsters for a while now, and they’ve brought all things trendy with them. I’ve been exploring this part of the city more and more, and I’ve found a lot here.

What I love about Hackney is the mix of old and new. The neighborhood is home to some of London’s most historic buildings as well as many of its latest pop-ups.

Traditional London culture sits side-by-side with hipster markets, and vintage brickwork is complimented by fresh street art.

Breaker's Yard, Hackney

1. London Fields

This phenomenon can be seen clearly in London Fields , one of my favorite places in Hackney. The park itself is a great place to spend a summer afternoon, and the pub on the edge is just the spot for a drink on a sunny day.

London Fields

But the area around the park is beautiful, too. The terraced houses and railway arches mix with contemporary buildings in a physical manifestation of the neighborhood’s evolution.

2. Broadway Market

At the southern end of London Fields is Broadway Market . This street and the Saturday market of the same name are bursting with good places to eat and drink.

The street itself is full of bars, cafes, pubs, and restaurants, and it’s hard to go wrong if I’m in the mood for food or drink.

Broadway Market, London

On Saturdays Broadway Market comes alive with street vendors offering everything from vintage clothing to ethnic cuisine.

I love browsing the arts and crafts stalls before picking up a samosa or coffee to sustain me on my explorations.

Street Art in Hackney, London

And with the park next door, one of my favorite things to do in Hackney is pick up a picnic and enjoy a leisurely afternoon on the grass.

3. St Augustine’s Tower

But if I’m in the mood for something more active, St Augustine’s Tower is the place I go to get my blood pumping.

Hackney’s oldest building, this Grade I-listed beauty dates back to the 16th century and sits at the heart of the ancient village.

View of London from St Augustine's Tower, Hackney

I love climbing the stone steps as they wind around and around, taking me up through the floors to learn about the history of Hackney and be rewarded with great views over London at the top.

4. St. John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens

Next door to St Augustine’s Tower lie the St. John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens.

A former graveyard, this park is still dotted with tombs, and weathered headstones are stacked five deep along the outer walls. There’s a genuine sense of history—not to mention beauty—here.

Graves in St. John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens

Beyond the gravestones, the gardens have little nooks and corners to explore, including one with a fountain and children’s playground. It’s another sign of old and new coming together in Hackney.

5. Sutton House and Breaker’s Yard

And speaking of history, Sutton House is the oldest domestic building in Hackney. If you read my last blog post , you’ll know that it was built by a prominent courtier in the Tudor period.

Not only is it a rare example of 16th-century brick architecture in Britain, but also a beautiful home both inside and out.

Sutton House, London

And speaking of out, visiting the garden outside Sutton House is one of the most unique things to do in Hackney.

Called Breaker’s Yard, it features 1970s caravans that artists have converted into historic “stately homes”. There are other quirky artistic treasures dotted around the grounds, too.

6. Chatsworth Road Market

Not far from Sutton House is Chatsworth Road, where the Sunday market is worth a special trip. Chatsworth Road Market is full of mouth-watering food, fresh bread, and other tasty treats.

Chatsworth Road Market

The street itself is also great to explore. Like Broadway Market, it has lots of restaurants and cafes to enjoy.

It also has a lot of vintage furniture and antiques shops, many of which let their wares spill out onto the sidewalks. It’s fun to walk by and take in all the little details, from plant pots to chairs.

Chatsworth Road, Hackney

7. Hackney’s Side Streets

And when I’m done exploring the market, I like to venture into the side streets in Hackney. There are a lot of them to explore, and when I take the time to do it I’m rewarded with all the historic details I could want in a London neighborhood.

Street in Hackney, London

From rows of terraced houses to worn steps leading up to colorful front doors, the area’s back lanes have a lot of charm. Which is why exploring roads like Sutton Place is one of my favorite things to do in Hackney.

Red Phone Box in Hackney, London

Things to Do in Hackney

And it doesn’t end here. This part of London has a lot more going for it, and every time I visit I find something new (or old) to discover.

There’s always something to bring me back, from the beloved Hackney Picturehouse to the London Fields Lido, both of which I’ve yet to experience.

As long as this area challenges Shoreditch’s status as the London capital of cool, I’ll be returning on a regular basis to find more things to do in Hackney.

10 Heavenly Things To Do In Hackney Central

Rooftop bars with panoramic city views, top-of-the-range restaurants, fantastic weekend markets… The borough of Hackney is one heck of a cool customer.

Samuel Hopkins

Amongst some wonderful pubs , countless delicious restaurants , green spaces aplenty and generous helpings of edgy things to do, we’ve managed to whittle it down to just ten – because we’re helpful that way. So, without further ado, here’s our rundown of ten of the best things to do in Hackney Central. You can thank us later…

1. Peruse the stalls of Broadway Market

People milling about on Broadway Market in Hackney, London

This popular spot is real foodie heaven in 120 or so stalls. Lying just at the Southern end of London Fields and to the North of the Regent’s Canal, it’s quite possibly one of the best weekend markets we’ve got in the whole of London Town, and they sell everything here from vintage clothing and flowers to wheels of cheese and falafel wraps .

Originally established back in Victorian times, it went through a period of significant decline before being brought back to life back in 2004. It runs every Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and there’s also some great pubs, delis and coffee shops to boot around here if you’re wanting to quench your thirst post-shop.

📍Find it at Broadway Market, Hackney, London, E8 4QJ.

2. Soak up the views from atop a rooftop bar

The sunset from Netil360 in London fields, one of the best things to do in Hackney Central

Now that bar in question we hear you ask dear reader? Well, it’s none other than Netil360 – a popular and laid-back spot set atop Netil House offering panoramic views of Shoreditch , The City, Aldgate and beyond.

A fantastic spot to come for sunset, they’ve got some g reat craft beers on tap, plenty of foliage dotted about , DJs spinning the tunes at the weekends and some of the best sushi in town, so you can see why we can’t get enough of this place.

📍Find it at 1 Westgate Street, Hackney, London, E8 3RL.

3. Catch a show at the legendary Hackney Empire

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney Empire (@hackneyempire)

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Hackney Central, then a visit to this iconic venue has to be right at the top of the list. Grade II*-listed, it was originally designed as a music hall by the famous architect Frank Markham back all the way back in 1901, and it now is one of the leading theatres in the whole of the capital.

Championing everything from comedy and opera to awards shows and even pantomimes , it’s a fantastic spot that’s well worth a visit whenever you’re in this neck of the woods. Perhaps their biggest draw is that, alongside their mainstage programme, they also provide performing arts activities for over 4,000 local young people. Not bad hey?

📍Find it at 291 Mare Street, Hackney, London, E8 1EJ.

4. Grab a pint or two at The Five Points Brewing Co.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Five Points Brewing Co. (@fivepointsbrew)

Now this is definitely one of our favourite things to do in Hackney Central. Founded back in 2013 and now a firm favourite amongst locals, this hip and award-winning Hackney brewery specialises in ‘ modern and vibrant beer, brewed with passion and integrity ’. An independent joint, these guys were both inspired by the British real ale tradition and the international craft beer movement – the result is a delicious melting pot of unique flavours.

Along with their regular favourites – which include their Pilsner-style lager and juicy pale ale – they also do seasonal varieties. Recent examples include the ‘Pining for Mangoes’ – a mango pale ale brewed in collaboration with Sweden’s Dugges Bryggeri – and the ‘South Pacific Bitter’, the first of its kind. There’s a tap room based right on Mare Street, so you can try as many different kinds of pints as you wish – cheers!

📍Find it at 61 Mare St, London E8 4RG.

5. Amble around London Fields or Hackney Downs

People enjoying the sunshine in the landscaped gardens of London Fields

There are two significant stretches of green in this uber-cool area of London. The first is London Fields – a popular spot so-called due to its history as a site for grazing animals and moving them to market down at Smithfield. Bordered by some bloody good boozers at either end and home to one of London’s only heated lidos , it’s a great spot to while away the hours when the sun’s out and about – particularly with a takeaway pizza and pints.

The other stretch in question is Hackney Downs – a charming, 40-acre-spot bordering Clapton which also has a play area, basketball courts, football and cricket pitches and a bowling green to boot too. There’s also a wildflower meadow, so if you’re hoping to spot some wildlife , then this is the place to come!

📍Find London Fields at London Fields Westside, E8 3EU and Hackney Downs at Downs Park Road, Lower Clapton, London, E5 8NP.

6. Take a dip in the lido

View this post on Instagram A post shared by London Fields Lido (@london_fields_lido)

Ok, so we’ve just mentioned it, but taking a dip at the London Fields lido is truly one of the best things to do in Hackney Central. The 50-metre outdoor swimming pool is heated to a positively-balmy 25 degrees all-year-round, so you can even take a dip even when it’s Baltic. It’s open (usually) from 6.30am until 9pm, and is also floodlit after dark for late-night swims during the Autumn and Winter months.

It’s a real bloody bobby dazzler if we say so ourselves, and tickets start at just £5.70 – perfect if you’re looking to work off that picnic you’ve just had in the neighbouring park.

📍Find it at London Fields West Side, London, E8 3EU.

7. Test your skills and win prizes with a night of bingo

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DABBERS BINGO (@dabbersbingo)

You really just can’t beat a boozy bingo night out with your friends. Who doesn’t like drinking, dancing and winning prizes? From drag dress to garage anthems, we’ve got a whole range of different places in town to enjoy bingo, but when it comes to Hackney, we’d have to suggest Dabbers Social Bingo – an 85-capacity venue in the Hackney Picturehouse (more on that later) which offers you the chance to hit the jackpot and win one of their seven treasure chest prizes every Saturday night. Cop your tickets here .

Alternatively, head there on a Sunday and see off the Sunday fear with an unforgettable afternoon of laughter, glitter and bingo madness with some of the most raucous drag queens in town. You’ll be living your best life while you battle it out against friends and foes to win some pretty epic prizes – and drinks too of course! Get a hold of your tickets here .

📍Find it at Dabbers Social Bingo Hackney, 270 Mare Street, London, E8 1HE.

8. Watch a flick at the Hackney Picturehouse

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney Picturehouse (@hackneypicturehouse)

Offering East London’s biggest cinema screen, this lovely neighbourhood spot is a firm favourite among both locals and visitors to the borough alike. It’s a thriving cultural hub offering five screens, a great restaurant and a lively bar too – and a social space for Dabbers bingo (we told you that’d come back around).

This prestigious and Brutalist venue also offers regular Q&As with filmmakers, National Theatre live performances and the showing of old classics, so there’s plenty on offer here for whatever you’re looking for.

📍Find it at 270 Mare Street, London, E8 1HE.

9. Sample the dish of the week at Pidgin

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pidgin (@pidginlondon)

Pidgin is an intimate neighbourhood restaurant that has a simple mission – to serve a menu that changes every week, with nothing ever repeated! It punches well above its weight when it comes to creativity, and how could it not? It is the collaboration of a pop-up supper club chef and a food writer after all.

The set tasting menu features inventive and tasty dishes, and is cooked to perfection by their in-house chefs . While you’ll never get the same meal twice, you can always expect seasonal British cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. Vegetarians , vegans and pescatarians can all be catered for, making this a great spot for a gathering of your besties or perhaps your date with different diets. A good reason for adding this one onto this roundup of the best things to do in Hackney Central we feel…

📍Find it at 52 Wilton Way, London, E8 1BG.

10. Discover a slice of Hackney history

A picture of St. John at Hackney in East London, one of the best things to do in Hackney Central

Now listen up history buffs! The borough of Hackney dates all the way back to Roman times, when the thoroughfare of ‘Ermine Street’ was constructed through Shoreditch , Dalston and Stoke Newington too. So you won’t be surprised to learn that there’s a hell of a lot of history which can be unearthed here on a wander.

Two of our favourite spots are the Grade II-listed Sutton House – which dates all the way back to the Tudor Period and is the oldest residential building in Hackney. It’s now a museum run by the National Trust which you can visit on a guided tour, and is home to beautiful Jacobean wall paintings, carved wooden fireplaces and an opulent painted staircase too.

Our second spot is the Church of St John-at-Hackney, which was constructed in 1792 and contains monuments dating all the way back to the early sixteenth century. Fun fact – it’s also a fairly magical gig venue – Jamie XX, Griff and Coldplay have all played here over the years!

📍 Find Sutton House at 2 and 4 Homerton High Street, London, E9 6JQ and th e Church of St John-at-Hackney at Lower Clapton Road, London, E5 0PD.

So there you have it – a roundup of the best things to do in Hackney Central. From ancient, Grade II-listed buildings and classic boozers to heated lidos and fantastic restaurants, there’s something for everyone in this cool-as-a-cucumber borough. So get yourself East pronto!

A Guide to the Heart of Hackney: London’s Chic, Hipster Hub

This post is part of my London Neighbourhood Guides series. Fancy visiting another area of London? Check out my other guides  here , which all include information regarding the sights, history, charm, food and drinks of the area you’re curious about.

Ah, my beloved Hackney. It’s funny looking back on my first few years in London when I didn’t even know this borough really existed. I lived in Putney (southwest London), I went to Uni in Clerkenwell (in the Borough of Islington, a quite central borough) and Victor worked in Paddington (west London). I was truly unaware of the wonders of the east, but I’m so glad I now call Hackney home. It’s the kind of place that sucks you in and you can never imagine living anywhere else. The word that comes to mind when I think of Hackney is vibrant . Hackney is full of creatives and as a result, the borough is cool, eclectic and incredibly diverse. Back in 2014, Vogue named Hackney one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world .

The map below shows the boundaries of the Borough of Hackney, and the areas highlighted in pink are those that I cover in this post, including Hackney Downs , Hackney Central and London Fields .

places to visit near hackney london

Hackney Downs

This neighbourhood is named after the park central to the area, Hackney Downs . It’s a simple park with just a few amenities, but the large meadows make for the perfect spot for a Sunday picnic. It’s an ideal place to go if you want to get away from the crowds at the larger parks (like Victoria Park or London Fields). And while the park used to be the only thing worth talking about in this area, the neighbourhood has really flourished and attracted a lot of that great Hackney/East London hipster charm.

places to visit near hackney london

Also in Hackney Downs Studios is Re:Store where can bring your own containers or buy some in the shop, and fill up on whole foods, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, tea, coffee, oils, vinegar and household cleaning products. We make a trip here every couple of months or so! There’s also The Well Garden , a holistic yoga studio.

Another great stop in Hackney Downs is the Five Points Brewing Company . Their brewery is located right by the Hackney Downs station, but their taproom is a bit further south on Mare Street. However, they also have their beer served across the street at the Pembury Tavern . This is a fun, local-feeling pub that serves not only great beer but also a great time. I love the kind of people that hang out here. Everyone is so friendly and community-focused — really brings a smile to my face.

IMG_0732

Hackney Central

The area of Hackney really revolves around the main street, Mare Street . It starts at Hackney Central and goes all the way south to Regent’s Canal (before the street turns into Cambridge Heath Road).

Mare Street is actually a pedestrianised street between Dalston Lane and Mare Street (when it turns into a major road). Hackney Central is a bit of a chaotic hub, but along Mare Street, there are some great places amongst it all. For a very aesthetically pleasing cafe, head to Palm Vaults . It’s pink and full of plants and their coffee is actually quite good.

IMG_0229-2

Or, head next door to Behind This Wall , a basement cocktail bar. It’s aesthetically pleasing but also packs a punch in terms of its cocktail game. Across the intersection at the end of Mare Street is Oslo , a restaurant and live music venue. I went here for a friend’s birthday party and I really enjoyed the vibe and music.

places to visit near hackney london

Further along, you’ll run into the Hackney Empire , the best-known theatre in the East End. It was originally built in 1901 and has since had several famous performers including Charlie Chaplin, W. C. Fields, Stanley Holloway, Stan Laurel, Marie Lloyd, and Julie Andrews. For more entertainment, the Hackney Picturehouse is a great, modern cinema guaranteed to show all the big blockbusters.

Bohemia Place

Before heading down the high street, you can check out Bohemia Place Market . Sure, it’s a street market, but it also has some permanent spots worth checking out. The Brew Club is where you can brew your own beer! You choose a time and date, have six hours to spare, and then just show up. Once you’ve brewed your beer, you can come back in two weeks to pick up your fermented and bottled beer. The beer is then ready to drink 10 days later. How fun is that?

places to visit near hackney london

Another arch is home to what two breweries calls “ The Experiment .” It’s a joint venture between Pressure Drop and Verdant Brewing Co . It’s a taproom serving both breweries’ beers.

IMG_1124

London Fields

Like Hackney Downs, London Fields is both a park and a neighbourhood. London Fields is one of Hackney’s most popular parks. For me, it’ll always be the epitome of summer memories.

Right around the corner is the Netil House campus, which is home to several great attractions.  Netil Market is an outdoor stalls market featuring some delicious lunch options. The team behind BAO opened up the BAO Bar here, serving their classic bao and fried chicken. Other options at the market include Sonora Taquería (serving north Mexican food) and The Bagel Guys .

places to visit near hackney london

As you leave the south end of London Fields, you’ll be in Haggerston which means another blog post! Hackney is a massive borough, but the above bits and pieces are really the heart of the area. It’s my favourite place to be, so I hope you enjoyed this guide to central Hackney.

Look out for more blog posts on other neighbourhoods in Hackney!

Go East! Guide to the 10 Things to do in East London

Dalston London

London is a big, big city and because of that, it can be overwhelming to decide where to stay. On my numerous visits to London, I’ve stayed in quite a few different neighborhoods but far and away, my favorite area of the city is (predictably) the East. East London (also called the East End) has been the “it” area for the past few decades.

In the 90s, Shoreditch was the place for squatters and hipsters, bohemians and hippies. Nowadays, for better or worse, this part of London has been undergoing the typical gentrification process. The areas of Shoreditch, Hackney, Clapton, Hoxton and Dalston are some of the coolest and trendiest areas of London right now.

In November, I stayed at a HomeAway vacation apartment in Dalston . Our apartment was a brisk 10-minute walk from the Dalston-Kingsland Overground stop, which I quickly learned is a hipster hub. The overground station sits at the end of an everyday food market (the Ridley Road Market ) where we bought fresh fruit & vegetables so we could cook some meals in our apartment (though the empanada stand also got plenty of my business!).

Noticeably important in the neighborhood were an organic food shop, a cupcake bakery, Vietnamese restaurants and a restaurant selling nothing but arancini balls . Kingsland Street runs directly down to Shoreditch (essentially all the way to the legendary Whitechapel Gallery ) and seemed to be the main thoroughfare for connecting much of East London.

10 Reasons to Visit East London

Things to do in East London

Here’s my short guide on just what makes East London so hip and cool—and why you should base yourself in this part of London (mainly the Borough of Hackney, but also in Shoreditch) for your next trip! A guide to the 10 best places to visit in East London.

1. Quirky Shops

Shopping in London has long been a favorite past-time for tourists. Besides being an international fashion capital, thrift and vintage are words that were seemingly coined in London. We’ve probably got the rockstars to thank for that, but besides fashion, East London is overflowing with weird and quirky shops.

I particularly like Present London (140 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JE) —a menswear shop that sells fashion, housewares, books, coffee and other random things. Also try Paper & Cup (18 Calvert Avenue, E2 7JP) —a local not-for-profit bookshop & cafe (coffee & cakes!) and Pitfield London (31-35 Pitfield Street, N1 6HB) —a cafe, exhibition space and furniture store all rolled into one very cool & hip space.

2.  Street Art

In the past few decades, East London has seen a resurgence of public street art. Local artists Ben Eine and Stik  have left a trail of art throughout Shoreditch and the rest of the east, much of which you really can’t miss. It’s all over the place.

I highly recommend taking a street art tour because, even if you might spot some of the works on your own, you’ll learn so much more about East London’s recent history and the commitment to public issues many of these artists strive to achieve. I took a walking tour with Street Art London (every day, 2-4 hours, £12-15) which I really enjoyed despite the large group size.

3. Broadway Market

Just once a week (on Saturdays), the Broadway Market (naturally on Broadway Street, E8 4PH) takes place at the foot of London Fields park. It’s basically a food market, though some of the shops along the street include bookstores and vintage shops, so you’re basically covered for all necessities.

With more than 100 stalls & shops (most of them food), the street market has everything from Indian thalis to local fruits & vegetable vendors. The market’s a little less convenient to get to than some other areas of the Borough of Hackney, but if you make it there, you won’t be disappointed!

The pub at the end, The Cat & Mutton (76 Broadway Market, E8 4QJ) , is also a cosy place to visit if you want the authentic London pub experience.

4.  Sunday Markets

If there’s a day to make sure you’re in East London, it’s definitely Sunday. While Saturday hosts the Broadway Market, Sundays are definitely for the weekly Brick Lane Market. On Brick Lane and its surrounding streets, it’s nonstop vendor after vendor.

You’ll find everything a hipster needs: vintage clothes, used records, trendy t-shirts, hats and food stalls from seemingly every country in the world. With a top tip recommendation, I ended up eating at The Rib Man (91-96 Brick Lane, E1 6HR) — London’s best rib meat (and vouched for by Adam Richman’s Man v Food ). But honestly: the Brick Lane Market (every Sunday, 9am-5pm) is not to be missed. It’s one hundred million times better than the Camden Market.

Also on Sunday in the same area as Brick Lane, you’ll find the Sunday UpMarket in the old Truman Brewery, and the Columbia Road Flower Market . Both are chock full of people and unique stalls selling everything from fresh oysters to local artists’ DIY crafts.

5. Food Trucks

Besides the street markets which fill up with food stalls during the weekend, East London gets its fair share of food trucks and pop-up restaurants (and even food truck festivals). Across the street from Shoreditch Box Park on the High Street is a canopied food hall (inside you’ll want to try Tulum Tacos or Yalla Yalla ), but many food trucks set up shop during the weekdays on Dray Walk street (E1 6QR) just off Brick Lane.

Further north of Shoreditch, in Clapton, the local favorite food shop Palm 2 (152-156 Lower Clapton Road, E5 0QJ)  is also home to pop-up restaurants every weekend. That’s in addition to their organic food selection and homemade takeaway lunches & meals. Besides hosting various supper clubs (it was Jamaican the night I visited) every weekend, you can order freshly made sourdough pizzas from Latto’s Pizza  at the deli counter in the back of the shop.

6. London Fields

I was told countless times before visiting London that London Fields is *the* hipster park . In the summer months, it fills up with people of all ages having picnics , playing music and just generally enjoying life. Fun fact about this park: the land was historically used for grazing animals on the way to the livestock markets. On a warm day, this is without a doubt the best place to visit in East London.

7. Wilton Way

Not far from London Fields park is the small street Wilton Way. Now, this isn’t typically a tourist destination—it’s a bit of a walk from the nearest Underground station—but it’s totally worth it if you’re looking for that “travel like a local” experience.

On Wilton Way are a handful of shops selling various local goods and knick-knacks but the real highlight is the Wilton Way Cafe (63 Wilton Way, E8 1BG) . The independent coffee shop is also home to the local London Fields Radio so it’s got a real community atmosphere. Plus the food and coffee is great…and the twenty-somethings sitting at the nearby tables aren’t bad-looking themselves!

Also on Wilton Way is the friendly neighborhood restaurant Mayfields (52 Wilton Way, E8 1BG) which takes the theme so far that they actually refer to the restaurant as a “dining room.”

8. East London: Hipster Nightlife

With East London’s reputation for being so cool, it’s no wonder that they’ve got the right kind of nightlife to prove it. Whether it’s charming British pubs such as Red Lion (41 Hoxton Street, N1 6NH) , single-room sized neighborhood clubs such as the Ridley Road Market Bar (49 Ridley Road, Dalston, E8 2NP ) or trendy cocktail bars like Lounge Lover (1 Whitby Street, E1 6JU) , East London is nothing if not fun at night.

There are two great websites for finding out about the best events, bars and clubs in East London: Design My Night and Bar Chick .

9. Vintage & Thrift Shopping

If it seems like you can’t go a block in East London without stumbling upon a clothing store, well…then that’s exactly the case. Luckily this is also the area to find some of the best deals thanks to all the vintage and thrift shops.

Beyond Retro (110-112 Cheshire Street, E2 6EJ) has a large collection for men and women, plus cheaper deals than I was able to find along the Brick Lane market. But really: there are hundreds of thrift shops in throughout Shoreditch, Hoxton and Hackney — it’s just a matter of finding the right one for your style and tastes.

10. Food, Glorious Food! Where to Eat in East London

I didn’t realize it until I tried it myself, but East London is the historic home to some traditional English foods. Pie & mash (yummy!) and jellied eels  (not-so-yummy, but I suppose some people like ’em) are two of the food staples for the East End.

The small, family-run restaurant F. Cooke (9 Broadway Market, E8 4PH) is one of the most famous places to buy the local food (if you dare!). Besides the traditional foods, East London is now today a hotbed for innovative chefs and new, trendy restaurants.

Pizza East (56 Shoreditch High St, E1 6JJ) in Shoreditch has that “oh-I’m-so-cool” appeal, but that’s not a bad thing here. The pizzas are great and the atmosphere is cool enough to leave you feeling special.

TRAVEL TIP: To really discover East London’s food scene, try the East End Walking Tour with Eating London. The food tour samples everything from traditional English foods to modern takes on the classics, and it’s all interspersed between a walking history lesson about the East End.

My favorite dish from the food tour was a banana bread pudding but learning about East London’s unique history (from Jack the Ripper to new and old graffiti artists) was the real highlight. Check out their London tour offers here .

Thank YOU David! Had a great afternoon wandering around Hackney with you — even if the weather was shit. Can’t wait to get back there again!

Fun post! I really enjoyed the time I spent exploring the East End the last time I was in London – but I clearly missed a lot! A return trip will definitely be in order!

The East End is definitely the place to be. I know you enjoyed your time there on the last visit – just make sure you base yourself in this part of town on your next trip so that you can really reap all the great benefits!

' src=

For those that may be reading this and planning a visit to my home city it’s worth noting that Dalston is at the top of Kingsland ROAD, and if you follow it all the way down you’ll end up at London Bridge, some 2 miles away from the Whitechapel Gallery (for that you’ll want to walk down Kingsland Road, it’ll then become Shoreditch High Street and at the cross roads take the left down Commercial Street which will take you to the gallery).

Also Broadway Street is actually called Broadway Market (it’s also known as Broadway Market).

I’d also recommend you walk along the Regents Canal, from Kingsland Rd to Broadway Market.

Thanks Matt for the additional information – and yes completely forgot to mention the Regents Canal. That’s also near Broadway Market if I remember correctly — and really lovely in the summertime (as is much of London)

' src=

Yeah, I hear about those popular street artists all the time. It’s really amazing, you can see their work on almost anything. It’s amazing. It surely is a must-see for me.

' src=

Great suggestions here, Adam. You’ve got a few of my favourites there. For food, I would also recommend Hackney Bureau. And for drinks, the Star of Bethnal Green is a great option. There are lots of cool places along the canal as well (better in summer than winter). Towpath, just near Kingsland Rd, is a great place for breakfast on a warm day!

Thanks Michael for the extra tips. I’ve heard Star of Bethnal Green recommended before as well.

' src=

Nice post about East London! Will be visiting London on spring next year and I just get excited reading the places I should visit. Thanks

Awesome! Glad to hear it Kara – hope you get the chance to hang out in the East End while you’re in Londontown :)

' src=

I heartily agree. My recent return visit to my home turf has made me strangely proud of this part of the city. I have to offer a correction: East London and the East End are not the same thing; East London is a huge area covering basically everything north of the Thames and east of the A10, while the East End is a small part of that triangle down in the corner nearest central London, from the City to Mile End, perhaps?

Hey Sam – thanks for the information regarding East End vs East London. I must’ve asked a million times to try and figure out the differences, plus I was confused on what exactly Hackney, Shoreditch, Dalston, Hoxton and so on are by definition. I guess Hackney is a borough which includes Dalston and Hoxton, but Shoreditch is in a different borough. I found it all very confusing and still don’t fully understand. Also I’ve never been convinced that England is its own country, and WTF is the difference between the UK and Great Britain?!

It’s all Greek to me…

' src=

Ahhhh I have so much regret that I don’t live in East London (my flat is literally across the city, boo) because of all these things. Haven’t been to Brick Lane Market yet, but Broadway is amazing.

Amanda – you absolutely MUST go to Brick Lane on a Sunday. It’s a whole other world!!!

' src=

East London is definitely the best, of course! From Walthamstow myself and love it.

' src=

The street arts and Sunday markets would be the main reasons to visit this part of the city for me. I love exploring local fruit and veggies markets!

The markets in East London are probably some of London’s best! Brick Lane on a Sunday can’t be beat!

Great tips Adam! You know I’d love the street art. I really need to visit London and spend some time there someday. :)

Have you been to London before, Cheryl? It’s really an incredible city. I can see why there are so many people who move between both Berlin and London…

' src=

Thanks for the great tips, i wish you good successful :) .

' src=

This is exactly the type of area that appeals to me, so great job. It seems to have a real character to it. We had already ear marked the food walking tour, so I think that we will be happy little campers

Cool – glad to hear you’ve already got East London on your radar. Shoreditch has been popular for a while but if you go a bit further north into Hackney you’ll find some equally cool things.

And, oh yes – the food tour from Eating London is great. I’m sure you’d enjoy it!

' src=

Hi Adam, I have been to London many times and one area of London I think many would really enjoy, is attending a service at Westminster Abbey. The service was good, but the boys choir and the accoustics within the church was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. I checked for the services online before I left for the UK, and attended a service during the Christmas Holiday. The club scene, shopping and exploring are fantastic in London, but, If you want to really get a little English culture go to the Abbey and listen to the boys choir. Happy travels!

What a cool tip, Jerry! Sounds like a great idea on something to do.

Totally agree, I’ve live in Shoreditch, and I love East London for its atmosphere and spirit, that’s where you can feel real London :) Broadway market – best of the best :)

Hackney, London is a vibrant and popular East London area with plenty to get up to.

From local attractions like museums and markets, to great places to stop for a drink or meal, there’s something for everyone in Hackney.

So, whether you’re looking for your new Hackney brunch or Hackney cafe spot — or simply keen to spend a day exploring the area, here’s how to spend the day in Hackney like a local.

The Best Things to Do in Hackney, London

things-to-do-in-hackney-london

1. Go to Broadway Market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Broadway Market, E8 (@broadwaymarket)

Broadway Market is a large Victorian outdoor market with 120 regular stalls selling a variety of tasty and vintage items and is one of the most popular things to do in Hackney.

When wandering the 120 stalls you will be met with endless items like tasty tomato creations you can find at The Tomato Stall , or a delectable array of fudge flavors at Get Fudged .

There’s not just food either; you can find the best vintage wares at Broadway Vintage .

The market is open on Saturdays from 9am until 5pm, but the street itself has over 70 shops, like cafes, bakeries and more that are open all week.

2. Wander Through London Fields

wander-through-london-fields

As one of the most popular parks in Hackney, London Fields is a great place to relax and enjoy an afternoon.

The gorgeous green space is filled with a bunch of things to do and explore, including regular tennis on one of their two courts, to good ole table tennis — so plenty of choice for a good game.

If you’re looking for a way to spend a calm East London afternoon, it’s also worth taking a stroll through their wildflower meadow.

The park itself is also quite flat, making it the perfect place for a yummy picnic or simply bringing a blanket and a good book.

3. Take Up the Neighbourhood on Chatsworth Road

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chatsworth Road (@chatsworth.rd.e5)

While in Hackney, stopping at Chatsworth Road is a must. If you know anything about London, you know that the high streets can be the best bit of a neighbourhood & this definitely stands true for Hackney.

As one of the first planned high streets, Chatsworth Road is now home to more than just necessities. You can find some of the best restaurants serving cuisine from all over the world, like Vernerdi , which plates up incredible Italian favourites or tasty Turkish at Pivaz .

Every Sunday, this road transforms into a bustling outdoor market filled with local vendors selling fresh produce, and other goodies, like handmade bags from Bramble and Mr. Twigg .

Hungry? No problem, the weekend market continues the global flavor with stalls like Hanoi Kitchen and Slovaki Street .

There’s always something new to discover at Chatsworth Road Market, so definitely worth paying a visit!

4. See Hackney Wick

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Victoria Park Market (@victoriaparkmkt)

This sister neighbourhood to Hackney is best known for its connection to the 2012 London Olympics with Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, but there is so much more to discover.

First off — the lovely Victoria Park , which is actually the oldest public park in Britain, and other than being a place to enjoy an afternoon reading or walking, there’s also frequent events held in the park & open to everyone, like the Sunday Market .

The Marsh is best known for being the hub of Sunday football, with 82 pitches available to play on. There is also the Marshes Center with 31 changing rooms, a cafe where you can grab a coffee after playing, and a public viewing terrace with panoramic views.

The food and drink scene here is unmissable as well, especially when the restaurant has views of the serene river lea like the outdoor seating at CRATE Brewery & Pizzeria , or Barge East where you’re right on the water.

5. Check Out the Hackney Coffee Scene

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney Coffee Company (@hackneycoffeeco)

East London has some of the best coffee shops, especially Hackney. Not only will you be able to find a revitalizing cup of joe, but the interior of some of the shops are great for studying or spending an afternoon when working remote.

Here are some of my top recommendations:

E5 Bakehouse – Serving up sweet (and ethically baked) bread and treats alongside crisp cups of coffee

Hackney Coffee Company – Crafting flavour-filled coffee with seasonal menus

And more! If you want the real low down, check out my blog post on the 10 best Hackney coffee shops .

6. Shop at Mare Street Market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mare Street Market (@marestreetmarket)

Mare Street Market is the place to be if you are a foodie. And being indoors there’s no excuse not to go, even on a notorious rainy Hackney day!

This funky market is serving up everything thing you can think of, from a classic sandwich at their deli counter, to tattoos. Yes! You heard that right; tattoos are available to book at the market and done by artist Uxia Santos .

If you aren’t feeling a tattoo, no worries! Enjoy a bite at The Dining Room or The Open Kitchen , operated by the markets creative director himself.

Of course, for those of us who run on caffeine — they also have a coffee joint, The Flying Horse , where you can recharge before wandering the rest of the market.

The market is open Sunday through Thursday 9am-12am and Friday – Saturday 9am-1am.

7. Visit Sutton House and Breaker’s Yard (a National Trust Site!)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sutton House NT (@suttonhousent)

This National Trust location is a two-for-one!

Built in 1535, Sutton House is one of the last remaining Tudor houses in London.

For the best experience, you can explore the interior and its elegant oak paneling through a guided history tour .

Situated directly next door to Sutton House, you’ll also stumble upon Breakers Yard . Revamped from an industrial wasteland of car scraps, it has incorporated this history to create a playful place for all ages and is one of the most fun things to do in Hackney.

With a garden and views of Sutton house, its refreshed personality is a great little addition to the rich history of its neighbour.

Prices are £8.50 for adults and £4.50 for children, and you can book your visit via the National Trust Website .

8. Climb St. Augustine’s Tower

View this post on Instagram A post shared by St. Augustine’s Tower (@staugustinestower)

This Hackney activity is not for the weak!

To get to the top of Hackney’s oldest building, you have to ascend up 135 small and winding steps of the centuries-old tower, but the panoramic Hackney views are definitely worth it.

However, if you are keen to see the sights, but not ready to trek the stairs (valid), on the ground floor there’s a virtual reality exhibition available for use, which immerses you in the views from the roof.

P.S. – It’s free to see at any time, but the St. Augustine’s Tower bit is only open to the public on the last Sunday of every month!

9. Explore Jewish History in Stamford Hill

This neighbourhood is home to the largest community of Haredi Hasidic Jews, and holds an abundance of history.

With 90 synagogues, and five community centers, it is a very welcoming place for the Jewish community in London.

If you enjoy history, Jewish History, or are looking to learn more, a great way to do this is just by walking around the area, and stopping into one of the many kosher stores.

10. Have a Cosy Day at Hackney City Farm

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney City Farm (@hackneycityfarm_official)

Located in the heart of East London, for 35 years, Hackney City Farm has been a working farm and home to a wide range of animals. There are a ton of activities offered as well that the whole family can enjoy making it one of the best things to do in Hackney.

You’re welcome to hang out with the animals and can even get up close to the resident cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens — or explore their lovely garden section.

Here you’ll find an orchard with apple trees, pear trees, and plum trees, as well as a bog which hosts wetland plants and other native animals. There’s also a bit made up of raised beds growing fresh vegetables, and herbs, so a great way to spend a wholesome day in Hackney.

If being able to be close to nature in the heart of East London isn’t enough, the farm also holds events where you can show your skills in pottery, woodworking, or painting.

P.S. – You can hire the farm for personal events too (including weddings!)

11. Become a Plant Mom at the Conservatory Archives

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Conservatory Archives London (@conservatory_archives)

This Hackney spot is a plant lovers’ haven.

Entering the shop is like walking into a beautifully curated forest with greenery from floor to ceiling.

Once in, you can find all types of plants from small cacti and succulents, perfectly sized for your windowsill, to a potted Monstera — great for breathing life into your living room.

The Conservatory Archives also has an online shop they launched amidst the pandemic, making it even easier to bring some Hackney plants your way.

12. See a Show at Hackney Empire

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hackney Empire (@hackneyempire)

Opened in 1901, this Hackney venue is a staple of the East London arts.

Hosting events from opera, to dance, music, and comedy there’s a show for everyone here and the Hackney Empire team works endlessly to make art accessible and entertain for everyone and anyone who is interested.

Young people are at the heart of the Empire, with events like weekly workshops, and a youth forum. This makes it a fantastic environment for young people in Hackney or East London who are enthused about art to spend time and get involved.

So, if you find yourself in Hackney and itching for a show — put this on your list!

13. Dip Into the Hackney Pub Scene

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Old Ship Inn Hackney (@oldshiphackney)

No London neighbourhood would be complete without a pub! Here’s a few in Hackney to kick back and enjoy a pint.

Pub on the Park – Enjoy classic pub food with a cold pint in their covered outdoor beer garden

The Cat & Mutton – A traditional pub, pouring up your favourite pints

Prince George – A go-to for locals, with vibes that are unmatched!

Old Ship Hackney – A hip and upbeat pub cooking up juicy burgers right in the centre of Hackney.

Hackney Tap – Classic feeling of a pub but with a twist (cue Gyoza galore)

Chesham Arms – A Victorian-style and dog-friendly pub

14. Catch a Film at Rio Cinema

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rio Cinema (@riocinema)

Although this is in Dalston, Rio Cimema still deserves a shout.

With its vintage red velvet seats and retro backlit signs, Rio Cinema gives classic movie theatre feel from start to finish.

Screening all types of movies from independent films, to mainstream blockbusters there is most definitely something worth seeing here while you’re in the East End!

It’s also a non-profit charity and London’s longest-running community cinema, still engaging the community today by hiring local folks each year to be on their board of directors.

P.S. – You can book tickets on their website and they also have their own streaming service — Rio Player where you can bring the Dalston experience to you!

15. Discover the West Reservoir Centre

Another London hidden gem is the West Reservoir Centre in Hackney.

With a vast body of water, 23 acres to be exact, there’s lots of Hackney-fied water activities to get up to here.

Get your captain on by taking a certified sailing, or kayaking class . Or, for £11 you can cool off in the open water swimming area — fantastic for a London summer day.

Their youth club also runs teams that invite kids to partake in and learn the ropes of various water-sports.

If you’re not keen on anything water related, they’ve got you covered with the calm waterside cafe where you can stay dry with a nice coffee or tea, and watch Hackney life go by.

16. Have a Swim at the London Fields Lido

View this post on Instagram A post shared by London Fields Lido (@london_fields_lido)

Do you know the origin of the word Lido? Turns out it’s just the Italian word for beach!

Anyways, across London you can find various Lidos, essentially just outdoor pools, that offer a refreshing activity to escape the heat of those warmer months.

The London Fields Lido is the only olympic size (50 meters) pool in the capital, and you guessed it. it’s in Hackney.

Able to stay open all year round due to it being heated, you can sign up for swim lessons or if you already are a water bug, take up their lane swimming available all day. There’s also a sundeck and cafe if you are more the ‘dip your toes in’ type.

P.S. – Make sure you pre-book your visit in advance as it tends to fill up quite quickly!

17. Explore Shoreditch & Dalston Nearby

shoreditch-and-dalston

Near Hackney, there are two neighbourhoods close by that are just as cool. I’m sure you’ll be seeing blogs in the future about things to do in Dalston and things to do in Shoreditch , but for now, here’s a few ideas!

Both known for their hipster and artsy aesthetic, you can’t go wrong spending the day vintage shopping.

While on that note, Brick Lane in Shoreditch, has to be mentioned as it is filled with some of the best vintage stores in London. While you’re there make sure to stop at Beigel Bake for an amazing and authentic Salt Beef, and with it being open 24/7 you there is no excuse not to pop by!

In Dalston — you can spend the day at Ridley Road Market and pick up some fresh fruit or veg. When the sun sets, immerse yourself in its exciting nightlife by going to one of the many basement clubs or hoppin cocktail bars. After spending the day in Hackney of course.

Last Updated on 18 November, 2022

I have been wanting to visit Hackney City Farm and finally managed to this past bank holiday. My nephews were visiting from Manchester and so we made a family day out with my brother’s kids, my sister’s son and my one-year-old. With two cars, we made our way from South London to East London’s farm.

Established in 1984, Hackney Farm was an endeavour by creative members of the local population. They were motivated by the prosperity of the Kentish Town City Farm that was opened at that time.

They had the goal of providing the local population and the youngsters the chance to see nature and farm closely.

For more than 35 years, Hackney Farm has existed as an amazing spot for the local community to enjoy the adventure of a farm. They offer adults and children the opportunity to observe farm animals closely.

They educate the locals and visitors about the farm, food, animals, ways to take care of them and nature in general. This is among some of the coolest things to do in Shoreditch and Hackney .

Their unique site inspires people to take part in their tasks, lessons, workshops and learn about farm life. They also allow connecting with like-minded people and forming new friendships.

The farm is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00–16:30. It is closed on Mondays except for bank holidays.

Tips For Family Visiting With Children(Don’t ruin the experience for everyone)

I say this with love, please keep your children close by so that you can explain how they need to behave around animals. In my opinion, the reason this place is so valuable is so that kids can learn about the animals, farming and just where their food comes from.

This also means they have to learn and come to appreciate that cycle. In addition to learning how to treat animals.

Soon after we arrived their was a boy, maybe about 7, 8 or 9 years old chasing one of the chickens and basically trying to kick the chicken. Could not see his parents anywhere.

One of the volunteers, rather than just explaining why its wrong to do that to the chicken or animals in general. She told this child that chickens bite and will come for you if you chase them like that.

My nephews all heard this as well were coming in which meant they were all too scared to go anywhere near the chickens which are freely roaming the farm. This put the fear of God in the kids making the whole experience scary for them.

This meant that we spent a bit more time talking about being gentle with the animals. Picking up the chickens and stroking their feathers so they can see just how harmless they are and will relax around you if you are gentle with them.

There are plenty of families visiting and this place is free for all to visit, with so many things shutting down in London when it comes to child-friendly attractions I do hope this place continues to flourish and be available for future generations. It just makes it easier for kids living in the city to have access to seeing and experiencing a slice of farm life they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see living in a concrete jungle.

Things To See And Do At Hackney City Farm

Hackney farm is also home to a special school for people of age 13-17 who need a custom method for their schooling. They have a capacity of 10 young adults. The curriculum here is established on important skills, practical learning, along with proper mentoring.

Hackney City Farm gives several opportunities for leisure, adventure and learning to a wide section of the community. They organize mini farmers’ clubs on Saturday mornings for children of age 8-12 years from 10:30–12:30.

It is an incredible way for kids to experience nature, draw arts and crafts and interact with animals. All this is done under the careful supervision of their livestock worker.

Coming to their cafe, you can celebrate a kid’s birthday, and book for shoots, documentaries, and movies. Moreover, the farmyard, meadows and gardens are available for celebrations,  weddings, storytelling, launch parties, outdoor theatre and any occasion to bring the locals and other visitors together.

Parking Near Hackney City Farm

There is no parking on the farm. We ended up parking in one of the streets a short walk from the farm. My brother and sister who were driving dropped us off outside the farm with the kids and then went to park the cars.

There are plenty of spaces to park in surrounding streets. Many are marked for residents only between 8am and 2pm. If you are coming after that time then you have plenty more options for parking near Hackney City Farm.

Other Farms In London Or Nearby

Nearby you also have Spitalfields Farm which I am planning to take my son to next. I will share a post once we make the trip.
