TOP THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO GALERA + ORIENTAL MINDORO

1. snorkelling in puerto galera.

Why is snorkelling one of the top things to do in Puerto Galera?

If you’re itching for palm-fringed beaches and rainbow-hued marine life, pack your snorkeling gears, swimwear, and bag, and head to Puerto Galera. This sun-drenched town is oozing with natural attractions, and its best wonder is its underwater life.

Puerto Galera tourist spot underwater cave

If you’re staying in White Beach, touts/boat agents – holding laminated cardboard with photos of the snorkelling sites and islands – will approach you. Snorkeling rate at White Beach is ₱800 ($14 – €13) per person, includes transfer between Muelle Bay and White Beach.  Hotels and local tour operators in Sabang, Aninuan, White Beach, and other areas may also charge around the same rate. Alternatively, you can go to Muelle Bay and look for other tourists who can share the boat and you can just split the fees. See the snorkeling rate below at Muelle Bay.

Puerto Galera Snorkeling

  • Snorkeling Rate in Puerto Galera (Muelle Bay): ₱400 ($7 – €6) per person, 1-2 persons per boat/ ₱800 ($14 – €13) for 1 small boat, good for 2 persons

Terminal Fee: ₱20 ($0.36 – €0.33)

  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Access: Ride a tricycle to Muelle Bay where boats for snorkeling departs. Or book through a local tour operator, their packages include drop off/pick up, terminal fees, life vest and snorkeling gear

2. ISLAND HOPPING TOU R IN PUERTO GALERA

What makes island hopping one of the top things to do in Puerto Galera?

Aside from snorkeling, island hopping in Puerto Galera is one of the top activities in Oriental Mindoro. Bask in the azure sea and powdery sand of tropical beaches sprinkled on its coast. You can head to Muelle Bay to charter a boat for island hopping, which typically includes and choose about 3 islands to visit, which are typically Bucana Beach (Little Boracay), Long Beach, Heart Beach, and Haligi Beach . You can also go snorkeling on your own, but not as extensive if you chose the snorkeling tour. The standard island-hopping rate in Puerto Galera is ₱1,800 ($33 – €30), good for 6 persons, additional ₱300 ($4 – €5) per person for excess passenger.

Puerto Galera Island Hopping

On my recent trip to Puerto Galera, we tried the combination tour – snorkeling and island hopping. We were able to fully experience the snorkeling part, where the small boat will take you to the snorkeling sites. But since we were pressed for time, the island-hopping part was kind of hurry.  Thankfully, I was able to experience this last time.

It’s best to do the Puerto Galera Island Hopping and snorkeling in the morning because the sea is more calm during this time.

If you’re booking the regular island-hopping tour or the combined tour, most likely, lunch will be at one of the islands there, so, prepare extra money for lunch. Bringing food from outside is prohibited. If you’ve booked island-hopping through your hotel or a local tour operator, ask them if lunch is included in the tour package.

Here are the tourist spots typically included in the Puerto Galera land tour:

5.1. MUELLE CULTURAL HERITAGE PARK

Muelle Bay

Adding up to Puerto Galera’s pride is its inclusion on the list of most gorgeous bay in the world by Les Plus Belles Baies Du Monde (The Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club), an International Association founded in Berlin. Visit Muelle Bay and you’ll quickly agree. The revamped port is hugged by turquoise waters peppered with white yachts and outrigger boats waiting for their next journey. And while you are at it, don’t miss the eye-catching replica of a Spanish galleon.

Long before the arrival of the Spaniards, Puerto Galera was already known as a trading port and a safe harbor for vessels coming from China, the Kingdoms of Sumatra, and Indian coast. Around the 17 th century, during the Spanish colonial period, the colonizers found Muelle Bay and called the land “Puerto de Galleon” or “Port Galleon”.  Eventually, it was named Puerto de Galera and was chosen as the capital of the province. To counter the Moro pirates, they built watchtowers and positioned warships to guard the bay, among them was the sunken Canoñera Mariveles . Today, a gigantic replica of this ill-fated battleship is standing proudly on Muelle Cultural Heritage Park.

5.2. IRAYA-MANGYAN CULTURAL VILLAGE

Why is the Mangyan Village one of the top tourist spots in Puerto Galera?

Mangyan Village

Puerta Galera is home to the Irayas, a sub-tribe of the Mangyans, the nomadic indigenous group of photo-Malay origin with curly hair and dark complexion. Based on reports, they were originally living in the coastal areas, and they are believed to have traded with Chinese merchants as early as 1250 AD. Unfortunately, they were pushed into the mountains with the arrival of Christians and Moro settlers. Thankfully, many of them have preserved their traditional culture. Today, the Iraya Mangyans of Puerto Galera have found a home at the Mangyan Village in Sitio Talipanan at the foot of Mt. Malasimbo.

Nito souvenirs

On any given day, tourists can visit this modest village built by Ayala Foundation where the Mangyans can be seen proudly weaving nito vine into handicrafts that are perfect souvenirs. They consign their crafts and many of these handicrafts make their way to Greenbelt 5 Mall in Makati and exported to other countries.  I recommend buying handicrafts / souvenirs here to support the livelihood of the Irayas .

  • Entrance Fee: FREE, but tips/donations are encouraged.
  • Open Hours:   Daily 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Access: Charter a tricycle to take you Mangyan Village, special rate for tricycles (good for 3 passengers) is typically ₱150 ($3 – €2) – ₱200 ($4- €3) depending on the distance and your haggling skill. This is usually included in the tricycle land tour, day tour rate starts at ₱800 ($14 – €13), good for 3 pax.  Or if you booked a tour package through a travel agency, this is part of the land tour.

5.3. TAMARAW FALLS

Puerto Galera’s most famous water falls is Tamaraw Falls, named after the endangered tamaraws (dwarf buffalos found only in Mindoro).  This picturesque waterfall is very accessible, no need for long, tiring hikes to reach it. Tamaraw Falls is located along the highway in Brgy. Villaflor on the way to Calapan, often included in land tour packages in Puerto Galera.  There’s an entrance fee to use the area and swim at the foot of this towering falls.

Tamaraw Falls Oriental Mindoro

  • Entrance Fee: ₱30 ($0.54 – €0.49) per person for Tamaraw Falls entrance fee
  • Access :  Ride a jeep enroute to Calapan from Puerto Galera or vice versa. Alternatively, you can hire a tricycle to take you to Tamaraw Falls, but if you are doing the inland tour, this is included in itinerary.

5.4. TUKURAN FALLS

After dropping by Tamaraw Falls from Puerto Galera, you can visit another popular waterfall in Oriental Mindoro. Tukuran Falls maybe unheard of by first time visitors in Oriental Mindoro, but this cascading waterfall blissfully situated in the outskirt of San Teodoro attracts a bunch of day trippers from Puerto Galera. The water falls itself is not as scenic as Tamaraw Falls or the waterfalls in Infinity Farm, but is has its own appeal – the journey and the natural scenery going here.

Things to do In Oriental Mindoro: Carabao Ride to Tukuran Falls

The jump-off point itself on the way to the waterfalls will make you savor the countryside atmosphere.  From there, visitors can opt to ride a motorcycle, hire a guide to trek, or ride the carabao to the waterfalls. Most tourists choose the last option because of its uniqueness, you won’t get to experience riding a carabao crossing palm-fringed rivers on your way to a waterfall. And once you arrive at Tukuran Falls, you can cliff dive into (be extra careful of the rocks) into the mesmeric, emerald green natural pools created by waterfalls running from the forest.

swimming in Tukuran Falls

Make sure to wear aqua shoes on your way to Tukuran Falls because you will surely be wet. Secure your gadgets on a dry bag. There are stores located at the jumping off point and at the waterfalls, so you won’t go hungry.  And there are life vest and lifebuoy for rent here for ₱50 ($1 – €0.82) and ₱100 ($1- €0.82) respectively.

Tukuran Falls Places to See in Puerto

Tukuran Falls is a good picnic spot, so best to bring grilled seafood here, there are available grills that you can use for cooking.

  • Carabao Ride (maximum 5 person ) ₱500 ($10 – €9)
  • Entrance fee:   Adult ₱100 ($1- €0.82), Child ₱50 ($9 – €8),
  • Environmental fee: ₱50 ($9 – €8)

5.5. silonay mangrove forest.

Silonay Mangrove Conservation and Eco-Park is managed and run by Sama-samang Nagkakaisang Pamayanan ng Silonay (SNPS), a people’s organization by community volunteers and barangay officials. Because their coastal village has often been threatened by storm surges, the mangroves growing here protect them. There are about 15 mangroves species in Silonay Mangrove Forest and it is home to some endemic birds including the Philippine Duck and Pygmy Swiftlet. Aside from the protection it offers to the village, the mangrove park is now an eco-tourism destination, often included in inland tour packages. Tourists can visit the 42-hectare Silonay Mangrove Conservation and Eco-Park and take a leisurely walk on its 350-meter boardwalk leading to a 6-meter-high tower that offers a scenic view of the Silonay River clad by dense wilderness. It’s a good spot for taking drone videos.

5.6. INFINITY FARM RESORT

Just 1.5 hours away from Puerto galera, Infinity Farm Resort is a gorgeous resort in Baco, Oriental Mindoro, one of my favorite stops during our Oriental Mindoro trip. I was stunned by its emerald green; cascading waterfall clad by trees and towering evergreen plants flowing into majestic pools where guests can swim and relax.  I regret not taking a swim here because the water was refreshingly cool when I tried dipping my feet.  They’re equipped with clean, modern shower room and toilet. There are also cottages on the side where you can eat and hang out after swimming. I really enjoyed the serene nature here and the mouthwatering boodle fight! Don’t miss this when visiting Oriental Mindoro, it is included in some inland tour packages by local tour operators.

6. WANDER AT WHITE BEACH

Why is Wh i te Beach one of the top Puerto Galera tourist spots ?

Puerto Galera Land Tour : White Beach Overlooking

White Beach is the most famous beach in Puerto Galera, its powdery white sand coast is sprinkled with resorts, bars and restaurants that have never stopped expanding. By day, aside from swimming and getting a tan, you can try the water sports here (see the water activities in Puerto Galera prices above).

At night, you can go bar hopping, listen to live bands while drinking with friends and you can also watch the talented local fire dancers perform! While you are at it, have a sip of the iconic cocktail aptly named as Mindoro Sling! This cherry-red alcoholic drink consists of Tanduay rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, mango juice, grenadine syrup and sprite, and is very popular for a reason. It is such a buzz that even some beach resorts in Puerto Galera offer tutorials on how to make a Mindoro Sling on their Bar Mixing Lesson. Mindoro Sling is believed to have been popularized by Mikko Bar, but most bars scattered along White Beach offer this drink too! Please drink moderately.

BALAI MINDORO

They say art makes people. One of my favorite destinations in during our recent Oriental Mindoro trip is Balai Mindoro in Calapan. It’s actually a private venue for events that is peppered with beautifully-crafted arts showcasing the ingenuity of Mindoro local artists and the culture and traditional of Mindoro province.

Oriental Mindoro Tourist Spot : Balai Mindoro

At the entrance, visitors are welcome by the towering sculpture called “Tribu”, created by Gilbert Llave, featuring the 8 subgroups of Mangyans, the indigenous people of Mindoro. And once you get inside, you’ll be wowed by a massive painting of Mangyans named “Henerasyon”, which was painted by the artists Badz Magsumbol and Daisy Cabatay. In front of the painting is a sculpture aptly named “Kamukha”, crafted by Peter Salazar. This piece is actually the idea and concept of Dr. Abril Alexander de Guzman, the owner of Balai Mindoro.

Balai Mindoro paintings : Henerasyon

Another masterpiece of Badz Magsumbol is the acrylic on Nara wood called “Mangyan, Kapwa Pilino”.  He said this is his work in Balai Mindoro and the hardest to make, among his creations.

Several artworks of local artists are also on display at Balai Mindoro. And outside, you will find another evocative sculpture called “Vanishing Kalinga”, symbolizing the endangered Tamaraw, the Pakudos, and the Mangyans.

Through these artworks in various medium, Balai Mindoro hopes to remind the people of Mindoro to cherish, defend, and impart their culture and traditions to the younger generation.

  • As in most beaches, sea urchins are present in snorkelling sites, so wear aqua shoes or full-foot fins    when snorkelling and please do not step on corals.

  • If you are traveling solo to Puerto Galera and you want to do the island-hopping tour but you don’t want to spend that much for the boat, try to schedule your trip on a weekend and approach other travellers (preferably those in groups) to join their island hopping and just share the expenses.
  • Stack up cash (Philippine currency) before heading to Puerto Galera, there are ATMs in town.  Almost everything is on cash basis here.

DISCLAIMER:

A month ago, MT Princess Empress sank off the waters of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro causing an oil spill, a truly a devastating blow to the environment, marine life, and the locals, especially to those who rely on fishing and tourism for livelihood in Oriental Mindoro.  Puerto Galera’s water activities (snorkeling, island hopping, diving, and water sports at White Beach) are still open as of writing this blogpost. But amid the conflicting news on whether or not Puerto Galera and nearby areas are affected by the oil spill, for your peace of mind and safety, if you’re visiting the province soon, you can just do the land tours in Puerto Galera and Oriental Mindoro, and save the water activities for your next visit in the future once the province has healed.  To support the local tourism industry, you can still explore the underrated attractions ON LAND in Puerto Galera and Oriental Mindoro.   Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, Baco, and Calapan (land tours), remain open for tourism as of writing.

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

If one would condense my growth as a beach chaser into the life span of a butterfly, Puerto Galera would be somewhere in the caterpillar stage. Back when I was not yet capable of flying, when Boracay, Palawan and the Maldives filled my flights of fancy, I had my eyes on places that was a little bit more realistic. First, I wanted to just hit the beach, a nearby beach, any beach. Then, I wanted to go farther, ride a boat, and set foot in an island. I always had a destination in mind — Puerto Galera.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING PUERTO GALERA

Even before the colonial era, Puerto Galera has always been a busy port area because it is a good natural shelter for ships and boats. In 1570, the Spaniards arrived in Batangas and later crossed the Verde Island Passage to this coastal settlement. They named it Puerto Galera or Port of Galleons.

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

Today, Puerto Galera is a first class municipality in Oriental Mindoro, about 130 km south of Manila. Although occupying the northernmost tip of another island (Mindoro Island), it can be easily reached from Luzon. This accessibility from the capital and CALABARZON, the country’s most populous region, made it one of the most popular beach destination for decades.

Puerto Galera faces the Verde Island Passage, which is described by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity citing the high concentration of marine species. In 1973, it was declared a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Here are more useful bits about Puerto Galera.

  • Location: Oriental Mindoro, Philippines.
  • Languages: Iraya and Tagalog. But most residents, especially tourism workers, can communicate in English too.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.90, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.57 (as of May 2019).
  • Modes of payment: CASH, primarily. Some establishments accept credit cards, but bring cash to be safe.

WHERE TO STAY IN PUERTO GALERA

Puerto Galera’s jagged coastline is hemmed by over a dozen fair-sand-filled coves. Of all these beaches, these three are the most ideal places to stay for tourists:

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

  • White Beach. Puerto Galera’s most popular beach. This is Galera’s answer to Boracay’s White Beach. (And yep, they bear the same name.) This is where most of the tourism action happens. You’ll find a wide array of lodging and dining options here. Nightlife is also here.
  • Aninuan Beach. Located just next to White Beach but this is much more tamed and quiet. This is a good place to stay if you’re after a more relaxing stay but want easy access to White Beach.
  • Sabang Beach. A little bit detached from the first two coves, but it also harbors lots of accommodations. This is a great base for divers because of the number of dive resorts.

HOW TO GET TO PUERTO GALERA

The cheapest and most usual way to reach Puerto Galera from Manila is via Batangas. From Batangas Pier, you will need to catch a ferry to either of the two ports in Puerto Galera. Balatero Port is closer to White Beach and Aninuan Beach, while Muelle Port is closer to Sabang.

  • Head to a JAM Liner bus terminal. There’s one in Cubao and another in LRT Buendia area.
  • Catch a bus bound for Batangas Pier. Some buses pass through and make several stops in Sto. Tomas and Tanauan. If you want a quick journey, board a bus with the CALABARZON sign. This means that the bus will be taking the STAR Tollway, which bypasses most towns and cities between SLEX and Batangas City. Travel time is 2-3 hours. Fare is P197 if you’re coming from Buendia or P207 from Cubao. See bus schedule in the next section below.
  • Get off at Batangas Pier. You can also tell the conductor that you plan to go to Puerto Galera so he knows where to drop you off.
  • Upon arrival at Batangas Pier, head straight to the ticket counters. You may be approached by touts saying that there are no public ferries to Puerto Galera that day. DON’T BELIEVE THEM. They’re just trying to get you to charter an expensive private boat. Walk straight to the ticketing counters.
  • Purchase tickets to Puerto Galera. You may choose a roro or a fastcraft. You can find the schedule as of April 2019 here . Fare: P300.
  • Pay the Batangas Pier terminal fee. P30 per person.
  • Board your booked ferry. Travel time: 55-100 minutes, depending on the type of vessel.
  • At Balatero or Muelle Port, pay the environmental fee. P50 per person. Balatero Pier also collects an additional P20 terminal fee.
  • Ride a tricycle to your resort. If your resort is within short distance, fare is P200 per trip or P50 per person (if you’re a group).

MANILA TO BATANGAS BUS SCHEDULE

Here’s the schedule of Jam Liner buses as of May 2019.

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

BATANGAS PIER TO PUERTO GALERA SCHEDULE

You can board a roro, a semi-fastcraft, or a fastcraft to Muelle Port or Balatero Port.

There used to be outrigger boats that carry passengers straight to White Beach or Sabang Beach. But during our last trip to Puerto Galera, we didn’t see any outrigger boats to Puerto Galera. The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) had plans of phasing out wooden-hulled boats last year, but I’m not sure if they have implemented this already.

For the schedule of authorized ferries, you may refer to this: BATANGAS-PUERTO GALERA TIMETABLE .

HOW TO GET AROUND PUERTO GALERA

By tricycle.

The jeepney is the cheapest mode of transportation in Puerto Galera. However, as in any other place in the country, jeepneys follow a fixed route and tentative schedules. If you want better control of your time, the tricycle is better.

For short distances, most tricycle drivers charge P150-200 per ride (good for 3 pax). If you’re a group, that’s fine, but it’s a pain on the pockets if you’re traveling solo. A friend said that this is the tourist rate and that it is much lower for locals. I don’t know what the local rate is. However, for budgeting purposes, you can assume that it’s P200 per trip so you won’t go under.

You can also charter a tricycle to take you on a tour and see inland attractions like Tamaraw Falls, Virgin Beach, Mangyan Village, Infinity Farm and others for P800 (good for 3 pax).

By Motorcycle

If you have a driver’s license and you know how to drive a motorcycle, you can rent one and explore the town freely on your own. Rates vary depending on the type of motorcycle and the shop, but the standard rate is P400 per day.

If you choose to travel on two wheels, take extra care. Always wear a helmet even if many of the locals you see don’t.

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

To get to some islands and other coves, chartering a boat is the way to go. Here are the boat rates for trips from Muelle Port as of May 2019. A boat can usually accommodate up to 6 pax.

  • Sandbar: P200 one-way, P400 round trip
  • Buri Beach: P200 one-way, P400 round trip
  • San Antonio: P230 one-way, P460 round trip

  • Talipanan Beach: P1200 one-way, P2400 round trip

You can also ask the boatman to tour you around. You may choose three destinations and they will show you around for around P2000.

NIGHT RATES: Night rates are double the prices listed above.

There are many ways to bring the cost down. If you’re part of a bigger group, you can dramatically reduce the tour expenses. This itinerary assumes you’re a group of 3 but a typical boat can accommodate 6 pax (some even 8 pax). You can also choose a cheaper room.

Here is the new ferry schedule. https://i.imgur.com/KAF0EUl.jpg Buy a round trip ferry ticket in Batangas to avoid a fully booked ferry on your return trip to Batangas. Returning on a Sunday without reserving a ticket can leave you stranded with no options from Muelle or Balatero. You will have to go to Calapan to return to Batangas.

Step-by-Step Travel Guide to PUERTO GALERA

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

A first-class municipality in Oriental Mindoro, Puerto Galera is located at the northernmost tip of Mindoro Island. Being about 130 kilometers south of Manila, it is easily accessible from the capital and CALABARZON, the most populous region in the country. Its accessibility made it one of the most well-known beach destinations for many years.

The island has been a busy port area even before the Spaniards arrived. Its bay is a good shelter for ships and boats against bad weather. When the Spaniards arrived in Batangas in 1570, they later crossed the Verde Island Passage and reached this coastal settlement. They called the place Puerto Galera (Port of Galleons).

Today, Puerto Galera remains to be one of the many beautiful beach destinations near Manila. It faces the Verde Island Passage which is described as the “center of the center” of the marine biodiversity in the world by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study because of the high concentration of marine species. It was also declared as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1973.

ATTENTION! Don’t forget to accomplish all the requirements prior to your visit. Take note of the new normal travel rules and guidelines and make sure to comply with them. It’s best to check the official website or the Facebook page of Puerto Galera local government, Puerto Galera Tourism Office, and Oriental Mindoro Provincial Government for updates and announcements.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Best Area to Stay

There are over a dozen coves with fair sand along Puerto Galera’s jagged coastline. Among all those, there are three places that are most ideal for tourists to stay in.

  • Sabang Beach: A bit far from White Beach but this is also a great spot especially for divers. There are multiple dive resorts here and a lot of other accommodation options.
  • Aninuan Beach: This is right next to White Beach, but it is much quieter. If you want to have a more relaxing stay but also want to be close to White Beach, this place is ideal.

Getting There

NOTE: This section is a work in progress. Due to the pandemic, changes may have occurred. Please contact the LGU, terminal, or bus company directly for the latest schedule, routes, and fares.

The most common way to go to Puerto Galera from Manila is via Batangas. This is also the cheapest way to reach this popular beach destination. From Manila, you need to go to Batangas Pier where you’ll catch a ferry to either of the two ports in Puerto Galera. Balatero Port, which is close to White Beach and Aninuan Beach, and Muelle Port, which is closer to Sabang Beach.

  • Go to a JAM Liner Bus Terminal. Jam Liner has two terminals, one in Cubao and one near LRT Buendia.
  • Hop on a bus bound to Batangas Pier. The travel time may vary on the stops the bus makes. Some buses make several stops in Sto. Tomas and Tanauan. Catch a bus with the CALABARZON sign if you want to reach Batangas Pier faster. This bus will take the STAR Tollway, bypassing most towns and cities between SLEX and Batangas City. Travel time is around 2-3 hours. The fare is more or less P200.
  • Alight at Batangas Pier. If you want to make sure, you may also tell your conductor that you’re headed to Puerto Galera so he knows where to drop you off.
  • Go straight to the ticket counters when you arrive at the pier. There may be touts that will approach you saying there will be no public ferries to Puerto Galera that day to get you to rent a private boat, but don’t believe them. Go straight to the ticketing counters.
  • Buy ferry tickets to Puerto Galera. You have two options: a RoRo or a fastcraft. The fare is around P300.
  • Pay the Batangas Pier Terminal Fee. The terminal fee per person is P30.
  • Get on your designated ferry. The travel time is 55 to 100 minutes, depending on the type of vessel.
  • Pay the environmental fee at the Balatero or Muelle Port. The environmental fee is P50 per person. Balatero Port also has an additional P20 fee.
  • Travel to your resort. For short distances, the tricycle fare is P200 per trip.

Tourist Spots & Attractions

ATTENTION! Because of the pandemic, the opening hours and rates might change from time to time. Make sure you check the official websites or Facebook pages of the attractions and tourist spots prior to your trip.

White Beach and Nightlife

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

The most popular beach in Puerto Galera, White Beach is its answer to Boracay. This place is highly commercialized and you can find a lot of activities to enjoy. If you’re looking for nightlife in Puerto Galera, this is the place to be. On weekends and holidays, there are live bands and fire dancers too.

Water Sports

If you’re looking for more thrilling adventures, there are lots of water activities you can do. Most of the water rides are best enjoyed as a group. Here are some of them:

  • Fly Fish: P1,500 (good for 3 pax)
  • Flying Saucer: P2,000 (good for 6 pax)
  • Jetski: P2,000 (for 15 minutes)
  • Unicorn: P2,500 (good for 10 pax)
  • King Cobra: P2,500 (good for 10 pax)

Don’t leave out the inland attractions of Puerto Galera! There are tourist spots that are easily accessible by land. You may join a tricycle tour to visit these sites. Here are the usual stops of the tricycle tour: Tamaraw Falls, Mangyan Village, and Virgin Beach.

The tour is around P800 per tricycle, good for a maximum of three (3) passengers. Note that the rate doesn’t include entrance and other fees to each site. These are the additional fees that you have to pay:

  • Tamaraw Falls Swimming Area Fee: P30/person. You only need to pay for the entrance if you plan to swim and take longer time here; otherwise, you can just view it from the side of the highway and take photos from there for free.
  • Virgin Beach Entrance Fee: P30/person

If you don’t prefer a tricycle or you’re with a bigger group, you may also charter a multi-cab or jeepney for over P2,000 per vehicle. This doesn’t include additional fees as well. This will allow you to see other attractions at your own pace. Here are additional attractions that you can include in your itinerary besides the three abovementioned tourist spots: Turukan Falls, Hanging Bridge, Lantuyan Water Curtain, and Infinity Farm.

Island Hopping

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

If you want to explore small islands and other sand pockets of Puerto Galera and other nearby towns, island hopping is the way to go because some of the beaches and destinations, although located on Mindoro Island, can only be accessed by boat.

Most Island Hopping tour packages will take you to these attractions: Haligi Beach, Bayanan Beach, Sandbar (sometimes replaced by Maniknik Beach), and Coral Garden. You can also replace an attraction with another. Here’s the list of beaches where you can choose three.

  • San Antonio
  • Big La Laguna
  • Small La Laguna
  • Talipanan Beach
  • Sabang Beach
  • Tamaraw Beach

A boat tour costs P1,800 – P2,000 per boat, good for six to eight passengers. There’s an additional fee of P200 per person for the smaller paddle boat that will take you to the snorkeling site. To make the most of your trip, you may visit these sites for an extra P600 per person:

  • San Antonio Island’s Underwater Cave
  • Giant Clams Site
  • Coral Garden

Diving Courses

Puerto Galera is at the southwestern end of the Verde Island Passage, which is dubbed as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute Study citing its high concentration of marine life.

There are over 40 established dive sites in Puerto Galera making it one of the top diving destinations in the Philippines. If you have never tried scuba diving before, Puerto Galera is an ideal place to try it for the first time. You can find a lot of dive shops and resorts here. Rates may vary, but some start at P1,500 per dive. You can also take PADI introductory courses for around P3,500 (1-2 hours, 1 dive).

Best Time to Visit

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

The months of December to March are the most ideal time to visit Puerto Galera. These months are dry, but not too hot so you can enjoy the outdoors. The months of July and August have the most rainfall so if you don’t want the rain to interfere with your itinerary, you’d want to avoid these months.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Always check for updates. Some adjustments have to be taken for establishments and attractions to operate during the new normal. Don’t forget to contact or visit the official websites or Facebook pages of the attractions and activities for announcements and updates before going.
  • Leave nothing but footprints. Do not leave trash on the beach or other attractions you’ll visit. Help protect the environment by throwing your trash in proper garbage disposals.
  • Bring sun protection. The sun can be unforgiving sometimes, especially in summer. Don’t forget to bring a hat/cap and sunglasses or apply sunscreen.
  • Use coral-friendly sunscreen. Help protect marine life by making sure you use sunscreen that is coral-friendly. Avoid products that contain the following chemicals: oxybenzone, benzophenone, and parabens.
  • Practice sustainability and travel responsibly. Preserve the beauty of our environment by practicing sustainable tourism. You can start small by bringing and using reusable products like dry bags or eco bags to avoid single-use plastic. Bringing a reusable water bottle is ideal too.
  • Follow the town’s rules and regulations. Make sure you know the travel safety protocols and requirements and follow them.
