New Safari Hotel (1967) Ltd, formerly known as Safari Hotel, was built in 1935 for Gladys and Margot Rydon, two English sister owning coffee estates in Tanganyika. After the unification of Tanganyika and Zanzibar into modern – day Tanzania in 1964 and Arusha Declaration in 1967.

1967, the Safari Hotel was nationalised, as were many banks and large industries at that time, and handed to the National Housing Corporation. The Hotel was subsequently sold to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, who added the new to the name and set up the New Safari Hotel (1967) Ltd which acquired its ownership in 2002.

Another noted landmark addition to Arusha in the late 1930’s was the “Safari House” “Newer and fancier than the other Hotels in Arusha, lovely grounds and the old-world charm of its rival.” However, it was masterfully managed by an Englishman, Ben Benbow, who was on a first name basis with every white hunter as well as celebrity actors such as Robert Taylor, John Wayne and Harry Kruger that visited and stayed, during the filming of “HATARI,, in 1961.The place had a beautiful copper bar and “the walls were decorated with framed and signed photographs of white hunters with their clients and trophies.”

Could you help me trace what happened to the Le Gallais Special? This was imported into Kenya by a man called Shepherd and raced by several people, on some occasions at Nakuru I believe. Nobody seems to know what happened to it after 1967 when it was rolled by a man called Salt. I attach a photo which was used for an ad to try and find the car. I am a friend of Peter Le Gallais, the son of the cars builder. (Thanks Gerard van Dam)

The Treetops (sent by Pushpendra Shah)

As the name suggests, Treetops Hotel was literally built into the tops of the trees of Aberdare National Park . The idea was to offer guests a very close view of local wildlife in complete safety. This concept was borrowed from an Indian tradition called Shikar , which was a form of hunting in colonial India , where hunting was done on a platform mounted on a tree in complete safety and comfort. The hotel, initially run by Eric Walker , was operational in 1932 starting with a modest two roomed tree house to the fifty rooms it has today. The original structure was burned down by African guerrillas during the 1954 Mau Mau uprising , but the hotel was later rebuilt near the same waterhole where it was initially. It rises straight out of the ground on stilts and has four decks and a roof top viewing platform. It has a rustic external feel, with matching interior decor. Large timber framed windows dot the internal spaces and a rooftop terrace provides a perfect location for viewing the wildlife below. (sent by Pushpendra Shah)

Unlike the Ripon Falls hotel in Jinja, It is so nice and re-assuring to know an old heritage has been maintained so beautifully. I am not sure if the Germans built this magnificent piece of architecture, but the present Management have done extremely well to look after it. It is a three star hotel and the rooms do not have airconditioning. Well worth a visit to Tabora just to re-live old time nostalgia.

safari hotel 1967

Because of financial difficulties, the elegant and respectable St. Gregory Hotel in New Orleans is in danger of falling into the hands of Curtis O'Keefe, the ruthless owner of a modernized chain of hotels. In a desperate attempt to forestall a takeover action Warren Trent, the hotel owner, a bigoted and strong-principled gentleman, takes the advice of his loyal manager, Peter McDermott, and secures union backing. O'Keefe counters by creating an incident in which a Negro couple is turned away from the hotel. Although McDermott exposes the couple as paid agitators, the union withdraws its support. Meanwhile, other crises are developing at the hotel: the Duke of Lanbourne, soon to be named British Ambassador to the United States, has killed a child in a hit-and-run accident and is being blackmailed for $25,000 by Dupere, an unscrupulous hotel detective; McDermott has become romantically involved with O'Keefe's French mistress, Jeanne; and Keycase, a thief, is attempting to burglarize as many rooms as possible. The Duke decides to turn himself over to the police, but while he is riding down in the elevator with a young mother, her daughter, and Keycase, the elevator suddenly smashes against the shaft girders. In saving the lives of the other passengers, the Duke is killed. After Keycase has been arrested, Trent turns down O'Keefe's final offer and decides to sell the St. Gregory to a real estate corporation. Jeanne leaves O'Keefe for McDermott, and Trent makes plans to open a small family inn.
