Snake Print Safari Shirt

Sometimes the best fabric purchases are the ones you never intend to make – like when you go in to Spotlight to buy a mint coloured cotton knit for a t-shirt, and walk out with a khaki green python printed rayon instead. Oops!

Pattern Scissors Cloth Snake Print Safari Shirt

I usually only buy fabric with a vision in mind, and for this fabric I imagined a safari style shirt with pockets, in a relaxed fit. This required some modifications to my standard fitted shirt block – it’s been ages since I made a loose fitting shirt!

Once I had perfected the foundation I could start on all those exciting safari style details. Like patch pockets with box pleats and contoured flaps. And shoulder straps with a button tab.

Admittedly a lot of the detail is lost in the print, but it is there and creates subtle interest.

I drafted forward fastening cuffs with a deep sleeve tuck. The cuffs were a sticking point as I didn’t really know what I wanted. The near-finished shirt sat on the dummy for a couple of weeks, with the sleeves in various stages of reincarnation, until I settled on the final result. I really needed to recut the sleeves to get the true effect I wanted, but unfortunately didn’t have enough fabric. Never mind, the result is good enough.

Sewing this shirt was a pleasure with all the interesting details. Something I enjoy about sewing is each stage, and the step by step progress towards the final goal.

And I enjoy paying attention to detail, and sewing the intricate bits. Like pocket flaps. Here you can see how this one is sewn – after bagging out and pressing the flap, the top edge is sewn on upside down about 2cm above the pocket bag, then it is flipped down and topstitched at 6mm, enclosing the raw edge. Easy-peasy.

I’m really liking it! I wonder if I need a plain one in silk as well? Or maybe a dress version!

Beautiful sewing, and a clever adaptation of a shirt block. It’s a nice fit. Is there a half bust dart hidden under the pocket? We are of similar stature but I can’t seem to get away with an entirely dartless garment.

Thanks Beth! There are no darts, but there is bust suppression hidden in the front yoke gathers.

Love this shirt!

Very attractive – classic and stylish. I love the details (pockets and shoulder tabs)!

The shoulder tabs were an afterthought, that I am glad I thought of!

I see some gathers at the front to back shoulder join so that would allow for the bust instead of a dart. I have a Palmer and Pletsch McCall’s pattern that does the same. Love the details. And you are right, they are subtle, but there. I know what you mean about fabric that just jumps into your arms (or cart) when you see it. My first fabric purchase of 2020 is on its way after seeing someone else’s Carolyn Pajamas in a fantasy book print.

That’s correct Theresa, I made a shirt in the ’80s with the same gathers off a yoke – loved it! Your pyjamas sound like they are going to be fun!

Lovely! Inspiration for us!

Gorgeous n you Sheryll, who knew old Spotty could manage such a chic fabric?! I often think I’m wasting my time making detail on cheaper fabrics, but this looks truly worthy. Just a question, when using rayon do you keep seam allowances wider? I’ve noticed that over time with washing they start to fray no matter how small the stitch length almost. Keen to hear your thoughts. Happy 2020 luv, 48.9C in Sydney yesterday, send us some cool vibes mate. Xx

Spotlight have some gems hiding there if you have the time to look! For rayon I always use a 1cm seam allowance and overlock them together, and haven’t had problems with fraying. Is it on the stitching line? It could be that the needle isn’t sharp and is damaging the fabric? Hope you are surviving in that heat! And that those terrible bushfires stop soon 😦

Yes in the stitching line but usually where I’ve trimmed the seam allowance back for a curve or inside a facing. I’m going to try to be more cognisant of generous seam allowances in future, I probably often over trim! Xx

This is so gorgeous. I love the attention to every little detail. Triumph. As always.

Great details in this shirt, Sheryll! Such a lovely fit and is really perfect fabric/ print/color/pattern combination. Love the pockets and the gathers and tab details xx Camelia

Beautiful shirt! Impressed with your sewing skills…:)

Perfection!!

This pattern has all the things I want in a TNT pattern, sensible seam allowances, the right amount of sleeve head ease, shirt sleeve plackets, grown on front button bands, options for pockets, sleeve tabs, etc, as well as markings which line up perfectly and make sewing so much easier.

I already have plans for more versions of this great shirt!

Very vague instructions. I had to look up video tutorials online for the cuff plackets and reposition the pockets because they were positioned too low and too close to the underarm. Despite having to trouble shoot it quite a bit it I got 2 beautiful flannel shirts out of it, but it took me probably twice as long as usual to sew them.

Size Chart - CM

Size chart - inches, size conversion table, how do i know what size i am.

Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.

  • When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
  • Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
  • When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
  • You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:

A. Shoulder Breadth

Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.

B. Upper Arm Girth

This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.

This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.

Tips for Choosing the Best Safari Shirt

Divergent Travelers on safari in Africa - Best Safari Shirt

Color Choice Matters

Choosing the color of your safari shirt is more than just a style preference. Certain colors and patterns can attract unwanted attention from both wildlife and people.

That is why understanding the potential repercussions of your color choices is so important. Here are some colors to avoid and some to consider before you buy them.

COLORS TO AVOID:

  • Bright colors including white:  When you are out in the brush, scouting for animals the last thing you want is to be flashy. Bright colors, especially red and including white, can be seen from far away in the desert wilderness and can alert the wildlife you are hoping to catch a glimpse of.  The last thing you want is to be the reason everyone’s safari is a bust. Instead, try for more neutral tones.
  • Blue: Blue is another important color to avoid especially if you are on safari in Eastern Africa. This is because blue is known to attract the tsetse fly. Tsetses can transmit diseases that can cause severe illness, so it is best to take the appropriate measures to avoid them as much as possible.
  • Black: Black is another color that should be avoided on safari. Like blue, black has been proven to attract tsetse flies and it also absorbs the strong heat from the desert sun which can lead to its own health risks.
  • Camouflage: While camouflage is more of a pattern than a color, and may help you blend into the natural environment, it is still best to avoid. In most African countries camouflage is associated with soldiers and the military. You don’t want to confuse people as to your purpose on Safari or become an unnecessary target in potentially hostile areas.

David Stock on safari in Africa

COLORS TO WEAR:

  • Khaki, Brown & Tan: Khaki, brown and tan are the recommended colors when out on Safari. These colors will help you blend into the environment especially during the dry season which will help increase your odds of an animal sighting.  Beyond that, the roads you will be traveling are dirt and can be extremely dusty. This dust will settle in your clothing and chances are you won’t be finding a laundry mat anywhere nearby. Tan, khaki and brown colored shirts have the ability to conceal dirt and keep you looking fresh even after a full day excursion.
  • Dark Browns & Greens: During the rainy season, the vegetation becomes lusher and the soil becomes darker from the moisture. If going on Safari during this time, you may want to consider darker browns and/or greens as a better way to blend in. Make sure to do your research on the area you will be traveling to, so you can evaluate which season they may currently be experiencing.

Materials to Consider

The best safari shirts are going to be those made to combat harsh environments. They need to be durable, lightweight, resistant to the sun, quick to dry and have the ability to protect against bugs.

All of these elements start with the type of material the shirt is made from. Here are some of the pros and cons of the most popular materials used in safari shirts.

Synthetic materials are man-made fabrics like nylon or polyester. These tend to be extremely lightweight, great at wicking away moisture and quick to dry even when soaked all of the way through.

Safari shirts made from these fabrics are soft to the touch making them tremendously comfortable in any environment. They are also thin which helps you to stay cool even when wearing long sleeves to avoid sun exposure.

The downside to synthetics is that they are not great at trapping in heat. This is a concern as most safari’s drives are done at dawn and dusk when the desert is at its coolest.

These are also the times of day that mosquitoes, gnats and flies are at their prime and the thinness of synthetics offers little protection. That is why if you choose the synthetic option it is best to use these safari shirts with layers to make up for these weaknesses.

PROS:

  • Moisture-wicking
  • Lightweight
  • Quick-drying

CONS:

  • Best in warm weather
  • Less durability
  • Less protection against bugs

Cotton is the most accessible fabric used in most shirts we find at the store. It is cheap to manufacture and is one of the softest materials we can put on our bodies. It has the ability to trap body heat keeping you much warmer than your average synthetic and comes in every style you can imagine.

That being said, the downfall of cotton is moisture. It does not have the inherent ability to wick away sweat like nylon or polyester and will take forever to dry if caught in a downpour.

This is why cotton is never recommended for other outdoor activities such as hiking. If you get caught in an afternoon rainstorm and stay out in the Sahara once the heat of the sun dissipates, you may run the risk of hypothermia on the ride home. Or at the very least extreme discomfort.

  • Soft and extremely comfortable

CONS:

  • Retains moisture
  • Takes a long time to dry
  • Can be too warm in peak heat

Natural materials

Natural materials have made their way into much of outdoor apparel, so it only makes sense that they are found in Safari shirts as well. Materials such as hemp, linen, and wool fall under this category and each come with strengths and weaknesses.

Natural fabrics are responsibly sourced without producing as much waste through their manufacturing. They tend to be highly durable (especially hemp) and are well suited for a variety of environments.

However, due to their organic nature, these materials tend to lead to a more expensive product. Also, all of these natural materials are much more prone to wrinkling, wool and hemp can be too warm during peak heat hours and linen offers little protection against bugs.

PROS:

  • Reasonably sourced and recyclable
  • Highly durable
  • Extremely warm
  • Expensive
  • Prone to wrinkling

UV Protection

When spending any amount of time in desert climates, protection from the sun should be a major concern. Here there is very little to protect your skin against the harsh rays, that is why you need to rely on your clothing. You may believe that as long as you are covered UV radiation cannot reach you, but that is not always the case.

A standard cotton t-shirt can let in more than 20% of UV radiation, which is a lot if you are planning for extended exposure while on Safari. That is why you want to look for shirts with a UPF, or UV protection factor, rating.

This indicates what percentage of UV-rays can penetrate through any given fabric. UPF rating of at least 30 is recommended in a Safari shirt, and if you can find one with a UPF rating of 50, which will protect you against 99% of UV-radiation, it will definitely be worth the extra money.

Journey on a safari with the Safari dress pattern

Safari Dress chut Charlotte

The Safari dress pattern by Chut Charlotte is high on my list because I love quick and easy summer wardrobe pieces. Easy summer pieces are everything. Simple and straightforward forward, you could make 2-3 of these in a weekend for your summer travels and have a new look every day on your trip.  The  Safari pattern is available via download as a pdf as a letter or copy shop file.

Safari pattern features

The Safari pattern features one base top pattern elongated to a midi length and again to a dress.  The dress and the midi top have an optional interfaced long or half belt. And the Safari dress has pockets, always a bonus! All items are unlined and include facing. Make the Safari dress pattern out of a woven fabric, such as cotton, linen, or viscose. Unlike US patterns, the pattern designer instructs you when and where to finish the edges. These instructions are another plus when choosing a Chut Charlotte pattern.

Chut Charlotte Safari dress pattern

Avoid the boobie traps here .

  • Some Safari dress pattern flaws to note, the pattern pieces do not match the instructions, but it’s easy to figure out since there are only a few pieces to begin with.
  • The pockets do not have “stop sewing ” dots. So I created some. Also, make sure to understitch the pockets.

Chut Charlotte Safari dress pattern on the beach

Sewing Recommendations :

Stay stitch the neckline of the Safari dress before your start, so you don’t stretch the neckline applying the facing. Next time I would interface the front and back facing and understitch pockets. Simply sew straight down the pocket seam on the dress and then create a stop for a less floppy pocket.

Fitting the Safari dress pattern

Remember, US sewists; you have to convert everything to inches. My first dilemma is the sizing chart. For reference, my measurements are 36” bust, 30” waist, 41.5” hips, 91, 76, 107cm; this is a UK size 12 for the upper portion and a size 14-16 for the hip.  I imagine that this isn’t a deal-breaker for most of us, but you be aware that you may need to grade the pattern if you aren’t perfectly proportioned. Fortunately, this is one of the few patterns that clearly list the garment’s finished measurements. The Safari dress pattern designer lists the bust and hip measurements and the front and back lengths. A full bust adjustment is also illustrated.  Of note, there are no instructions to understitch the facing or neckline.

Safari pattern hacks:

  • Line the Safari dress
  • Create some darts for better shaping
  • Add sleeves
  • Side seam splits with a rounded hem
  • With some fit adjustments, this would be a great knit dress

Petite styling tips:

  • Safari midi top + leggings + flats
  • Safari dress + hoop earrings + wedge espadrilles
  • Safari top + Madewell stove pipe jeans + veja sneakers

Quilt Safari, Part One: Instructions & Free Pattern

safari shirt pattern

Hello to all of you Quilt Safari travelers, do you have everything you need for the safari in your suitcase? Straw hat, camera, khaki shorts…. ohh, I meant of course: sewing machine, fabrics and patterns, LOL 😀. Today we begin the Quilt Safari 🦁🦒🐘🦓🦏, and I have a free pattern for you to start with: the Diamond Border quilt block for our quilt.

We Are Sewing the Diamond Border

Today we are sewing the first block – the Diamond Border block! For all of those who have purchased the Safari quilt pattern, you have this pattern as a bonus pattern in the Safari quilt pattern .

Diamond Border Quilt Block Pattern

In this post, we cover all the details of foundation paper piecing so that even beginners can learn this technique and join in the quilt safari. In addition to the step-by-step instructions, there are two video tutorials.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sewing the other blocks one by one. We’ll start with the simpler blocks and gradually increase the level of difficulty.

Are You Ready?

Are you ready, have you all gotten your “Safari Quilt” pattern and chosen and organized your fabrics? Do you know the schedule and have you chosen a nice spot in our safari jeep? Then you’re ready to go!

If not, that’s no problem either. You can join this quilt along at any time. If this is your first time hearing about the Quilt Safari, read the following blog article in which I summarize the most important information:

Welcome to the Quilt Safari.

Together we will sew a quilt with FPP blocks featuring fantastic wild animal designs.

Safari Quilt Pattern

The patchwork instructions are published block by block on WeAllSew. Here you can find an overview of all the blog posts that have been published so far.

There is no time pressure with the Safari. You can follow your own rhythm and roam the savannah at your own pace. There is only one date to keep in mind: If you want to take part in the final giveaway (and there are fantastic prizes to be won!) you have to show a photo of your finished quilt top on social media or in the community section of the blog by June 16, 2024.

Material Overview – What Do You Need?

Fabric selection is one of the most important things when making a quilt. It is super important to choose your favorite fabrics because you will be spending a lot of time with them.

For Foundation Paper Piecing you will also need the following 10 things:

Foundation paper Piecing Tutorial

1. Sewing Machine and Needles

Any standard sewing machine is suitable for sewing foundation paper piecing patterns. I use the BERNINA 770 QE PLUS Kaffe Edition. I usually use 70 mm needles, but 80 mm needles are also suitable. Change the needles more often than usual, as sewing through paper puts a little more strain on the needles than sewing through fabric alone.

Ironing is essential for foundation paper piecing. The more the fabric and the segments are ironed, the flatter and smoother the seams will be, which makes it much easier to sew the individual segments together. This ensures the all-over accuracy and size of the quilt block.

There are various paper options for foundation paper piecing. You can read about the individual advantages and disadvantages here on my blog . I prefer to use standard printer paper (80 g) here and in general. It’s the easiest to get a hold of and it is usually already in my printer. It is the cheapest and, in combination with a fabric glue stick, the simplest and most effective option in my personal opinion.

4. Light Box (not necessary for this quilt, if you’re using solids like me)

A light box is only necessary if you do a lot of fussy cutting . Then it is a lot easier to place your pattern piece on the fabric. For the safari quilt, I almost exclusively use solid fabrics, except for the zebra and the giraffe, which do not require a light box. I just wanted to mention this for the sake of completeness.

5. Cutting Tools: Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, Scissors

Basically, you can’t have too many cutting mats. In the photo above you can see a small 12″ x 12″ cutting mat that I always have next to my sewing machine.

Dull scissors are like an ill-fitting shoe, you don’t immediately notice what’s wrong and annoying, but over time it becomes unbearable. Nice sharp scissors and rotary cutter blades are half the battle when sewing.

6. Fabric Glue Stick

Since I usually work with standard printer paper, I use these fabric glue sticks all the time. It’s much easier to work with than with pins. As it is only a temporary glue, there is no glue residue left on the fabric or on the needle/sewing machine.

7. Acrylic Rulers

The options here are truly endless. However, a small  12″ acrylic ruler is perfect for foundation paper piecing.

Of course, it is important to use a good thread for sewing as well as good fabric. I use Silk Finish Cotton 50 from Mettler, either in white or cream, which matches most of the fabric combinations I choose.

9. Tailor’s Clapper

This is one of my favorite tools. You iron the segments and then leave the clapper on top, which results in wonderfully flat seams. Here you can read what the clapper can do for you. Of course, you can also sew the Safari patterns without a Tailor’s Clapper. It just makes your workflow a lot easier.

10. Tweezers

These help to remove small pieces of paper.

Now that you have a detailed overview of my favorite tools, we can get started, right?

Instructions for the Diamond Border

My fabric selection.

Here is my fabric selection for the Diamond Border:

  • Chocolate brown
  • Bright pink

The border consists of 30 4″x 8″ blocks.

Diamond border Quilt block pattern

Let’s Go! We Are Sewing a Diamond Border Quilt Block

Before you think, “Oh my goodness, 30 blocks for the border”, that’s too much printer paper, ink, etc. – don’t worry, there are several ways to save on this.

  • As the first option, I’ll introduce you to a method where you only need one template that can be reused
  • You can use previously printed paper, the reverse side is completely sufficient.
  • You can of course print in grayscale, which saves color cartridges
  • You can have the segments printed out in a copy shop, which is often really inexpensive

So let’s start with the border block.

If you don’t have it yet, you can find the pattern for the complete quilt here on my website.

Or here is the free download for the Diamond Border in the size 4 “x 8” only.

The Classic Foundation Paper Piecing Method

This is the classic FPP method where we sew through the paper.

1. There are a total of 30 border blocks to sew for this quilt, they are 4 “x 8” in size. First, you print out all the parts of your pattern with letters and numbers. Of course, you do not have to print out the instructions and overview.

FPP tutorial

2. Cut out the pattern pieces along the dotted line. The more precisely you cut out, the easier it will be for you to join the individual pieces together.

FPP tutorial

3. It is now important that you understand that the quilt block is created on the back of the pattern! This fact often leads to misunderstandings. The pattern is not placed on the fabric and then cut out, as it is done with classic sewing patterns,  but the pattern serves as the foundation for sewing, the quilt block is created on the back.

4. Set your sewing machine to a small stitch length. I like to use 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm. The small stitch length makes it easier to pull out the paper in the end, when you’re done sewing. I also use the sewing machine foot with transparent sole #34D. This allows me to sew super accurately on the line.

FPP tutorial

5. This is how you start: Turn the first segment (marked with the letter A) to the wrong side so that the wrong side is facing you. Place the fabric that is to cover part 1 with the wrong side on the pattern.

Fpp tutorial

Wrong side of the fabric against the wrong side of the pattern!

Make sure that the fabric covers the entire area of 1, plus 1/4″ to 1/2″ seam allowance. You don’t have to pay attention to neat edges or the grainline. This will look like in the photos below. It shows the view from both sides.

Pin this piece of fabric in place with a pin or, if you want to work like me, use the fabric glue stick.

fpp tutorial

6. Turn the segment so that the printed side is facing you. Fold the pattern on the line between 1 and 2. It is best to use a postcard for this step, as you can achieve a nice crisp fold like this. The line between 1 and 2 is also the line that you will sew first.

fpp tutorial

The segment with the printed side is facing you.

Fpp tutorial

7. Cut the seam allowance to 1/4″. Use the acrylic ruler and the rotary cutter for this:

FPP tutorial

8. Choose a piece of fabric for the part of the segment numbered 2. Make sure that the piece of fabric covers the whole area of 2, plus 1/4″ to 1/2″ seam allowance. Be generous at the beginning. When you have sewn a few blocks later on, you can use slightly smaller pieces of fabric.

Lay the fabric for part 2 right sides together on the first fabric and align the edges of the seam allowance exactly on top of each other:

FPP tutorial

9. Sew exactly on the line between 1 and 2. It doesn’t matter if you make a few stitches before and after. The transparent presser foot sole of the sewing machine foot with the transparent bottom #34 and the patchwork foot #97 are both absolutely perfect here. I like to use both for FPP all the time.

Fpp tutorial

The seam between 1 and 2:

fpp tutorial

10. Now unfold the fabric from 2 so that you can see both right sides of the fabric and press this with the iron or finger press.

fpp tutorial

11. Now continue sewing the same way in numerical order. Next is the seam between 1 and 3. First fold along the seam with the postcard and trim the seam allowance. Place the piece of fabric for 3 aligning the edges of the seam allowance of 2 and sew along the line between 1 and 3. Now finish this segment in numerical order.

12. Sew all 4 segments of the diamond border block in this way.

Video Instructions

I have created a video in which I show the steps just mentioned.

It will help you – especially if you are new to FPP. Many things are easier when you see them in a video.

13. Cut back the excess fabric along the outer edges of the segments back to the seam allowance. Lay out the individual pieces as shown in the overview.

fpp tutorial

All the segments:

Diamond Border Quilt block

14. Join the segments in the order mentioned in the pattern. If you have sewn two segments together, remove the paper from the seam allowance only and press the seams open. This is where the Tailor’s Clapper comes into play, it helps to ensure that the seams are nice and flat.

There is another YouTube video for finishing the FPP pattern

Now the first block for the Border is finished! Let’s move on to the next one 🙂

Diamond border Quilt block pattern

The Second Method of FPP With Reusable Freezer Paper Template

In this method, we use freezer paper and do not sew through the paper.

1. What is freezer paper?

Freezer paper is a coated paper that is usually used to wrap food so that it can then be stored in the freezer. The coating is a kind of waxy plastic, like a film, and is intended to help prevent freezer burn. This paper is also frequently used in the creative and craft sector.

The waxy coating can be pressed to fabric with an iron without sticking. Making this paper ideal for templates of all kinds.

Freezer Paper is available from specialist creative and craft shops and, of course, online. Freezer Paper is available as a roll or for printing on your printer, which is the luxury version.

The advantage of freezer paper is that you don’t need as much paper and you don’t have to pull out the paper at the end.

2. First take your printed templates (you have to print them out once) and cut them out along the dotted line as with the classic method of FPP.

safari shirt pattern

I have used a Freezer Paper roll here. Trace your templates onto the paper side of your Freezer Paper. If you have one, use a light box. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a light box, you can just trace the templates on a window onto the Freezer Paper, this works just as well.

safari shirt pattern

3. Label your templates exactly as they are labeled on the paper templates. Transfer the numbers and letters exactly.

safari shirt pattern

4. Now work exactly the same way as you would in the classic version. Take your fabric for part 1 and place it against your template, wrong sides together. The fabric must cover part 1 generously.

safari shirt pattern

5. Instead of using the fabric glue pen, press your template onto the fabric (part 1 only). If you like, you can also use a mini iron or a travel iron to press more precisely.

safari shirt pattern

6. Continue as with the classic version. Fold between 1 and 2 along the seam that now needs to be sewn, again preferably using a postcard. And cut the seam allowance back to 1/4″.

safari shirt pattern

7. As with the classic version, place your fabric for part 2,  aligning the seam allowances, right sides together.

safari shirt pattern

8. Now this is the step that is different from the classic version! You do not sew through the paper, but the template remains folded back and you sew exactly next to the fold.

The patchwork foot #97 is a great help here, as the edge of the foot aligns perfectly with the edge of the seam allowance.

safari shirt pattern

9. Now fold the fabric back and press part 2 against the freezer paper. Then continue as with the classic version.

safari shirt pattern

10. Now fold the seam between 1 and 3 with a postcard. Lay the fabric for part 3 aligning the allowances, right sides together. And sew again exactly along the folded edge.

safari shirt pattern

11. Finish your segment in this way and cut the segment back to the seam allowances, just like in the classic version.

safari shirt pattern

12. Now you can simply peel off your Freezer Paper and use it again.

safari shirt pattern

13. Sew all 4 segments of this block and then join them together. If you have traced and sewn very accurately and cut back the seam allowances precisely, the pieces will fit together perfectly and your diamond corners will also match perfectly. As previously mentioned, the patchwork foot #97 is a real blessing for this work.

safari shirt pattern

Here is a YouTube video for this freezer paper foundation paper piecing method:

I much prefer sewing on paper and don’t mind pulling out the paper afterward at all. I just like the extra base. That’s just my personal opinion. You can of course decide for yourself, I look forward to your feedback.

4 comments on “quilt safari, part one: instructions & free pattern”.

Finally worked my way to the first post. Assume we need to find the post in We All Sew. I was waiting for a notification. So I started with the trunk up elephant. Got it now…doing border first.

I have tried to download the free pattern, but all that happens is it goes back to this page when I click checkout. I also couldn’t comment on that page. https://www.joejuneandmae.com/store/p491/Diamond_Border_Quilt_Block_-_PDF_pattern______.html

Been out of town so just starting. Is there a part of the instructions that gives a rough size to cut each piece of fabric before placing under the paper to stitch? Most patterns come with a pre-cutting to save fabric.

I had commented about this very early on as there are 30 border blocks so it seemed easy to give the cutting dimensions. But my comment was deemed unacceptable, I suppose, so never was posted.

About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

They did get the best of arch rivals Dinamo Ak-Bars in both the Russian Cup and the Prometheus International tournament to show they are knocking on the door.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.
