The Secret Lagoon In El Nido, Palawan: Complete Guide

Secret Lagoon is a small pool of water hidden within one of the most incredible and probably my favorite beach in El Nido, Palawan.

Table of Contents

SECRET LAGOON ON TOUR A

Secret Lagoon is part of Tour A in El Nido. I was lucky enough to experience  Tour A ,  Tour B   and  Tour   C , but have not yet made it on Tour D. Tour A was incredible with a good mixture of epic limestone cliffs, snorkeling and of course the Secret Lagoon.

To book your  EL NIDO   ISLAND HOPPING A TOUR  you can  Click Here  to check the availability and book online (It’s just $18 USD)

  • It includes Three Lagoons at Miniloc Island, Shimizu Island, Secret Lagoon Snorkel with turtles at Seven Commando Beach, BBQ Lunch

MY EXPERIENCE AT SECRET LAGOON

Secret Lagoon was part of our Tour A package and is a place I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times. As the boat slowly pulls in to the cove, you will be blown away by the intense scale of the limestone cliffs, which tower over the beach. I mean absolutely tower.

The tiny patch of sounds is completely dwarfed by the huge cliffs which must be hundreds of feet high. Trees are scattered throughout the incredibly sharp cliffs giving a great contrast to the greys of the limestone.

secret lagoon tourist spot

From the boat, you cannot see the Secret Lagoon, which is about the only part of this lagoon that is much of a secret. It’s a pretty popular spot and there is often a line to get inside. Your boat will dock and you will walk along the reef (kind of unfortunate parking spot and setup) towards the beach and then head over to the Secret Lagoon entrance. It’s just a small hole in the limestone wall and when you squeeze through it opens up into a small pool of water completely surrounded by the cliffs.

While it is an amazing natural formation, there really isn’t much to do inside and often it is just a big group of strangers standing around in the knee-deep water looking at each other. Enjoy it, appreciate it, look around and then head out to the beach because it is a pretty cool strip of sand lined with coconut trees and spots to explore. I always spend more time on the beach than in the Secret Lagoon, making the most of my time at what is seriously one of the most epic beaches in El Nido.

From the air, you can really see how little the Secret Lagoon is and just how big these cliffs are. Flying my drone on my second visit to Secret Lagoon was incredible and one of my favorite spots I’ve ever flown. It really gives you a unique perspective of the beach and the entire collection of limestone cliffs.

WHERE IS SECRET LAGOON

Secret Lagoon is hidden next to a small beach on the south side of Miniloc Island. The cliffs behind the beach are truly remarkable and for me, even more, impressive than the lagoon. It isn’t too far from El Nido Town but you will need to be on a tour boat to get out there. I’ve pinned it on the map below in case you want to see what other attractions are nearby.

ISLAND HOPPING IN EL NIDO, PALAWAN

I was lucky enough to experience  Tour A ,  Tour B   and  Tour   C , but have not yet made it on Tour D. However, don’t stress about which ‘letter tour’ will be the best. It’s El Nido, you are going to be visiting lagoons and beaches that will blow your mind no matter what tour you are on.

Information about Secret Lagoon

Secret Lagoon in El Nido

It’s no secret that El Nido has been blessed with more than its fair share of postcard perfect scenic locations. From majestic limestone formation jutting out from crystal clear turquoise seas to powdery white sandy beaches along its coastlines, not to mention the sheer diversity of marine wildlife in its perfectly hued oceans, its no wonder foreign publications have declared it the best beach and island destination in the Philippines.

As soon as your boat docks near the lagoon, your guide will direct you to a small opening hidden between a towering wall of limestone rocks by the seashore. It’s easy to miss this secret spot, and most people wonder if its possible to crawl through this tiny hole.

But once you get through it, you’ll be greeted by an unusual sight: a massive limestone rock formation surrounding a small body of water right in the middle of it.

Enclosed within a lagoon and eclipsed by towering rocks all around you, this awe inspiring scenery lends an otherworldly experience for visitors.

Depending on where your boat is parked, you’ll find more secret coves and hidden white sand beaches in the areas surrounding the secret lagoon. Take your time look around beyond the tiny opening to the secret lagoon, and you’ll be rewarded with more spectacular nooks and crannies waiting to be discovered.

How to get there

Located among the many islets dotting the majestic Bacuit Bay in El Nido, the lagoon is situated on the southern part of Miniloc island. It takes some effort to get there - aside from having to ride an outrigger boat to reach it, be prepared to get wet and to step on some sharp rocks, so put on some aqua shoes for good measure.

Best time to visit

Secret Lagoon is best visited during the summer season in the Philippines, specifically the dry season from November to April to avoid rainfall.

A Unique Experience At Secret Lagoon El Nido, Palawan

Nishi inside Secret Lagoon in El Nido

Secret Lagoon is a small pool of water hidden within the intensely tall limestone cliffs at Secret Beach in El Nido, Palawan.

Visiting Secret Lagoon El Nido is such a unique travel experience; you have to quite literally  squeeze through a small hole in a limestone wall  to get inside and discover it’s beauty.

Where is Secret Lagoon El Nido?

The no-longer-secret, Secret Lagoon is located on the southern corner of Miniloc Island, next to a small beach.

boat docked in el nido

It isn’t too far from El Nido Town but you will need to be on a boat tour to be able to visit. Secret Lagoon is part of Tour A, island hopping tours in El Nido. This is the tour I went on and it was absolutely incredible – the best one out of the choice of 4 tours and certainly one to add to your El Nido itinerary .

Enclosed by towering limestone cliffs, next to Secret Beach, you need to crawl through a small hole to access the lagoon.

My experience at Secret Lagoon

As the tour boat pulled into the cove at Secret Beach, I was blown away by the striking scale of the towering limestone cliffs along the beach.

The dramatic slate grey backdrop is broken up by flashes of green; trees dotted around amongst the cliffs and it is truly a sight to behold.

The sheer scale of this incredible natural rock formation is hard to describe – you just have to see it for yourself.

man on kayak selling fresh coconut water in el nido

There are people on kayaks selling drinks including fresh coconut water as you climb out of the boat, into the sea – no jumping off a boat here, as the sea is pretty shallow, with sharp rocks scattered around. This was quite the experience in itself.

The rocks are incredibly sharp and slippery in parts, with sudden drops too, so in order to access Secret Lagoon, the best thing to do is use a combination of treading through the water and swimming through parts of it.

Be warned, you will end up with a few minor cuts and bruises from bashing into the rocks, but it is totally worth it for the experience. I promise.

We made the mistake of not purchasing good quality aqua shoes in advance for this trip. I thought a cheap pair from eBay would suffice – I mean, how often does one need aqua shoes in living in England anyway? This was certainly my first time.

We were on a boat tour with lots of Filipinos who came prepared with all the appropriate gear – they didn’t struggle as much. Lesson learned.

tourists queuing to enter secret lagoon in bright neon life jackets

You cannot see the Secret Lagoon from where the boat docks, but you will see all the neon life vests of others from various boats queuing to get inside – this is a very popular spot with a long line to get inside.

You can witness my highly entertaining entrance though the small hole at Secret Lagoon El Nido in  my island hopping vlog below.

The hole opens up into a shallow pool of murky green water with the cliffs sweeping dramatically around them entirely. Patches of sound are dwarfed by the cliffs, and looking up, you see the blue sky peeking though and it is truly stunning.

You’ll notice that temperature inside is much cooler because the lagoon is in the shadows of the limestone cliffs enclosing it – it makes for a welcome brief escape from the sun.

the dramatic limestone cliffs inside secret lagoon

Now there really isn’t much to do inside Secret Lagoon El Nido, aside from standing around in knee-deep water looking at a big group of strangers, but it’s such a unique travel experience to simply be in the moment and enjoy it for a few minutes.

couple inside secret lagoon el nido

Entering and exiting Secret Lagoon

I would say the experience of entering and exiting the lagoon is half the fun of the experience. Bear in mind that this might not be an easy task if the ocean is a little rough – the entrance is rather tight, the rocks and walls are sharp and the waves can throw you around like a rag doll on a bad day.

the small hole to enter secret lagoon

You can remove your life jacket and use it as a float or to cushion between yourself and the rocks as you climb through.

There are always tour guides on hand, everywhere, to help you out though which is very reassuring and much needed.

I’ll be honest, Secret Lagoon El Nido isn’t the ideal place to visit for those who are claustrophobic. I am a little claustrophobic, however this was an opportunity I wasn’t going to pass up on – being a huge fan of any water activity and all that – and I don’t regret it for a second.

As I’ve said before, this is an experience unlike any other.

Where is Secret Beach, El Nido?

Secret Beach is right next to Secret Lagoon. A very picturesque, tranquil white sand beach where one can swim and laze until it’s time to be called back onto the boat to sail to your next stop.

secret beach el nido

During peak season, there are often long queues of people accessing Secret Lagoon – and this is exactly what we experienced.

On Tour A, you’ll have at least an hour to spend at this spot, so you can divide your time between the lagoon and beach. I would suggest spending around 10 minutes inside the lagoon, as like I said, there isn’t much to do when you are inside.

Head to the beach and spend longer there; explore the strip of sand, lined with coconut trees while relaxing to the sound of gentle waves crashing on the beach.

secret beach el nido

Sure, Secret Beach is incredibly tranquil and Secret Lagoon is an experience like no other, but the formation of the limestone cliffs all around is ultimately what’s astounding.

secret beach el nido with the limestone cliffs surrounding it

Secret Lagoon in El Nido Palawan: is it worth seeing?

Absolutely.

While there is certainly nothing secret about this lagoon or beach, the Secret Lagoon is something that needs to be on everyone’s Philippines itinerary , regardless of how long you are spending in El Nido.

Secret Lagoon in El Nido

I am not denying that this spot was crowded – it certainly when we visited.

The juxtaposition of the neon life vests in the sea against a limestone cliff backdrop are certainly offensive to the aesthetic eye, but the natural beauty of this entire area is unparalleled and absolutely worth visiting for.

El Nido Island Hopping Tours

There are four island hopping tours to choose from in El Nido; Tour A, B, C and D.

While Tour A is the most popular, followed by Tour D, I genuinely don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. El Nido is incredibly stunning and each lagoon or beach will blow your mind with it’s natural beauty, regardless of where you visit.

departure point of island hopping tours el nido

For a less crowded experience, I would suggest booking either Tours B or C – though it really isn’t a big deal when you’re out on the boat tour itself. The boats are generally small and we had a lovely group of 18 on ours.

Booking Island Hopping Tours

My top  Philippines travel tip  would be to not book any of these tours through your hotel as the price difference is ridiculous.  Our hotel were charging us 3000 pesos per person (around £43 per person) in comparison to the exact same  tour we booked  for £13 per person.

Island Hopping Tour A  – you can book this here for only £18 per person. It includes stops at Seven Commandos Beach to snorkel with turtles, Twin Rocks, lunch at Shimizu Island, Secret Lagoon, Secret Beach and the Big Lagoon.

Island Hopping Tour B  – you can book this here for only £20 per person. It includes Snake Island, Popolkan Island, Cudognong Cave, Cathedral Cave and Entalula Island.

Island Hopping Tour C  – you can book this here for only £23 per person. It includes Hidden Beach, Secret Beach, Helicopter Island, Talisay Beach and Matinloc Island.

Island Hopping Tour D  – you can book this here for only £19 per person. It includes Cadlao Island, Small Lagoon, Nat Nat Beach, Paradise Beach and Bukal Island.

When you walk out towards the pool, you’ll see that the pool edges are made of natural rock to give a serene, natural impression. The Secret Lagoon is loved by locals and visitors, so you’re likely to hear a multitude of languages as you float around in the large pool.

The Steamy History of the Secret Lagoon in Iceland

The Secret Lagoon in Iceland is the oldest man-made swimming pool in the country and was “built” (more like carved out) as early as 1891. Since it had been used by locals even before the construction, it got the nickname “old pool”, which in Icelandic becomes “Gamla Laugin”.

In the very early 1900s, Gamla Laugin was one of the very few spots that taught the Icelanders how to swim. This continued until 1947, when the swim school was moved to another nearby pool. This was the start of how the Secret Lagoon in Iceland slowly began to fade from the memory of the locals.

For a long time, the owner of the land of the lagoon used it as his own personal swimming pool, only inviting some friends sometimes. This is why it is now nicknamed “the Secret Lagoon”. In 2005, the new owner decided to revamp and commercialize the pool, which is why the secret is out, and we can all now enjoy the Secret Lagoon Hot Springs.

Apart from walking, there are many ways to get to the Secret Lagoon in Iceland. Below, you’ll find the most used means of transport:

This is the popular choice for independent travelers who want to be able to take a detour at a moment's notice. From Reykjavik, follow Ring Road 1 southeast for about 64 kilometers until you reach the exit for Road 30. Take the exit and follow Road 30 until you reach Flúðir. Now, it’s simply a matter of following the many signs that point you to the Secret Lagoon in Iceland.

Going there by bus will take between 2.5 and 3.5 hours, which is why we don’t recommend this option. You will have to take a bus from Reykjavik to Selfoss, then from Selfoss to Flúðir. After that, you’ll have to walk about 1.2 kilometers to the actual pool.

There will be a myriad of options for taking a tour option to the Secret Lagoon, and most of them will be part of a Golden Circle tour. When taking one of the many tour options that include the Secret Lagoon, it’s important to remember that there will be other stops along the tour. This often entails the passengers having limited time at each stop, so just make the most of your pool visit. The other option is to arrange a customized private tour with one of the local tour operators or private guides.

Visitors enjoying a serene soak in the natural geothermal pool of the Secret Lagoon

What to Expect at the Secret Lagoon

The water in the pool is fed by the geothermal hot springs, which means that the water coming up is rich in sulfur and is very warm. So, can you swim in the Secret Lagoon? Yes! The Secret Lagoon in Iceland keeps an average temperature between 38-40 degrees Celsius and the sulfur won’t cause you any harm.

You can expect the bare necessities at the pool, as the area keeps a humble approach in line with Icelandic core values. The bistro on site can serve simple drinks and snacks, but no hot meals. Showers and bathrooms are offered on-site, and you can rent both towels and swimsuits if you have accidentally forgotten yours.

If you visit   Iceland in the summer , you will need to book a ticket to ensure a spot in the pool.

How Long Do I Need at the Secret Lagoon?

Unlike places like the Blue Lagoon, the Secret Lagoon in Iceland doesn’t have a specific time attached to the tickets. This means that you can stay for as long as you want, with the closing time being the natural ending of your stay. An average stay is around 1.5 to 2 hours long, and if you go on a tour, you need to stick to the tour’s timetable.

Where to Stay Close to the Secret Lagoon

You have some options regarding accommodation close to the Secret Lagoon in Iceland. The nearby guesthouse, the local hotel, and the campground are our top three picks.

The local hotel,   The Hill , offers state-of-the-art rooms, event facilities, and a top-notch restaurant and bar.

The   Garður Stay Inn Fluðir  (the nearby guesthouse) offers fully equipped double bedrooms with kitchen and laundry, as well as access to the Secret Lagoon Hot Springs during the opening hours.

Secret Lagoon Travel Guide

The Secret Lagoon is basked in an air of mystery.

The Secret Lagoon is a man-made pool fed by naturally occurring hot springs located at Hverahólmi, the geothermal area next to the village of Flúðir in southern Iceland. It is the oldest pool in the country, and one of the most popular for locals and tourists alike.

Though not as busy as the Blue Lagoon , it still requires pre-booking in the summer. You can purchase the Secret Lagoon ticket here , or do a day tour of the Golden Circle and the Secret Lagoon .

Surroundings

The hot spring is situated within the range of popular tourist route the Golden Circle , close to the waterfall of Gullfoss , in the village of Flúðir .

This village is renowned for its volcanic activity, which is used for horticulture and agriculture in the form of many greenhouses. This helps Iceland produce fresh food throughout the year.

Another major advantage of this geothermal activity is the natural and age-old thermal pools to be found in the area. Hrunalaug is one of those, a minuscule natural hot spring that has regrettably undergone a great deal of damage in the last years due to increased numbers of visitors.

The Secret Lagoon, however, has been modified to accommodate a much larger number of people. It makes use of its natural terrain and geothermal heating, leaving the water at a temperature of 38-40° Celsius (100° Fahrenheit) all year long.

The area all around the hot spring consists of mossy lava fields and geothermal hot-spots, including a small geyser that erupts every 5 minutes or so, which can be seen from the pool. A path by the pool allows you to explore this area with ease.

The steam that rises from the surrounding terrain into the air gives the place its distinct and magical atmosphere.

Summer is the most popular time to visit the Secret Lagoon, and entry needs to be booked in advance.

The pool was constructed in 1891 and is officially the oldest swimming pool in the entire country. Icelanders simply call it 'the old pool' or 'gamla laugin'.

In the year 1909, the first swimming lessons took place in the pool, which continued until relocated to the new pool in Flúðir in 1947. Before the 1900s, the Icelandic people rarely knew how to swim, in spite of being a nation of fishermen surrounded by an ocean.

Today, near every single Icelandic person is an able swimmer, since swimming lessons are conducted in pools and are mandatory for every Icelandic child.

After the opening of the new pool in Flúðir, the Secret Lagoon was all but forgotten, falling into disrepair. Once its ownership changed hands, however, it underwent a renaissance. It has since then been thoroughly renovated, although maintains both a natural charm and air of abandoned, fairytale-like mystery.

It now attracts hundreds of people every day.

The Secret Lagoon is often compared favourably to the Blue Lagoon, for being cheaper and less busy. While true, the Blue Lagoon has more facilities, such as saunas and steam rooms, and a wealth of unique properties, such as its azure waters and silica masks, that distinguish it.

It is also closer to Reykjavík , near to Keflavík International Airport . This means that it can be visited to refresh after a long flight, or in preparation for one.

Both, however, are in beautiful, serene locations and have their own distinct charm, so many visitors indulge in trips to both.

The Secret Lagoon of Miniloc Island: El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

El Nido, apparently, has many secrets.

We thought the Secret Beach of Matinloc Island (Tour C) was the only concealed beach that we were gonna set foot on in this trip. But Miniloc Island has a secret, too. After exploring the Big and Small Lagoons, and having lunch at Payong-Payong Beach, Tour A continued and led us to a paradise made of limestone. It was a surreal experience approaching this hard, spiky karst world. It was like we entered another world — a world where “ugly” is either banned or non-existent.

To our right were magnificent cliffs that, as we passed by, slowly revealed a white, sparkling beach that harbors coconut trees. The cliffs were like open arms, inviting us to come nearer and see what the island had to offer.

When our boat finally docked, our attention was drawn to a little opening in one of the cliffs to our left. It was a huge wall with a tiny hole. And that hole, my friends, was the entrance to the Secret Lagoon, also known as Hidden Lagoon, of Miniloc Island. All along, we thought the Secret Lagoon was the beach behind the giant rocks to our right. Apparently, there’s another world behind the karst rocks on the other side, so hidden that I had to twist my body like a pretzel to get there.

Fortunately, the opening was above the water so we didn’t have to swim through it. We just had to crawl into the Secret Lagoon. Note also that the water leading to the lagoon was shallow so you need to be extra careful with the rocks and corals.

secret lagoon tourist spot

The Secret Lagoon was much smaller than the Secret Beach. The temperature inside was much cooler because it is constantly in the shadows of the limestone cliffs enclosing it.

Although the water inside looked shallow, our boatmen warned us that it gets deeper as you go farther so we did not dare.

Our Danish friends Rene and Kate were having a blast camwhoring. They kept on raving about the beauty of the Philippines and how they wish to be back and how we were so lucky to be living in a country that is overflowing with wonders.

We stayed at the Secret Lagoon for over 30 minutes before we called it quits and moved on to our next destination, ready as ever for more secrets.

Hi! May I ask if it’s okay just to arrange our island hopping when we’re there already? We will be traveling in a group of 10. Is it cheaper to deal directly with the boatmen rather than have a pre-arranged tour? thanx!

The Poor Traveler

Hi! I don’t know if that’s advisable during peak season but that’s exactly what we did — we just arranged our island hopping tours when we arrived in El Nido. We went there last late November.

As for the boatmen, I think it’s cheaper to deal directly with the boatmen. However, I think you will still score some good deals with a travel agency coz you’re a big group. :)

A happy couple at the Secret Lagoon in Iceland

What can you expect from a visit to the Secret Lagoon in Iceland? How does it differ from other spas and hot springs around the country? Read on to learn more about the many joys that come with bathing at the Secret Lagoon in Iceland.

In Icelandic, the Secret Lagoon is known as Gamla Laugin , meaning Old Pool .

It is aptly named, being the first artificially-made outdoor swimming area in Iceland. The first incarnation of the pool was built in 1891, smack in the centre of a geothermal area known as Hverahólmi. It was quite the change given this space had historically been used for washing clothes.

Since opening, it has become a tradition amongst local people to enjoy bathing in these gently simmering waters. Swimming lessons were held there from 1909 to 1947, at which point the original pool fell into disrepair.

It was not until 2005 that the pool was given a second chance. On the 7th of June 2014, the Secret Lagoon officially opened its doors. Holiday-makers have been flocking to it ever since.

When can you visit the Secret Lagoon?

Entering the Secret Lagoon

There really is no best time to visit the Secret Lagoon. Summer visitors can enjoy the lush beauty of the surrounding nature, as well as the omnipresent sunlight. Winter travellers can expect a welcome source of heat from its waters, helping to break up their day exploring the local area. Opening hours for the Secret Lagoon are as follows:

Winter season

*from 1st of October to 31st of May

Open daily from 10:00 to 19:00

Summer season

*from 1st of June to 30th of September

Open daily from 10:00 to 20:00

Where is the Secret Lagoon?

Gamla Laugin

The Secret Lagoon is located in Flúðir village , in South Iceland. Home to little more than 800 people, the village is known for its abundance of greenhouses and gorgeous surrounding scenery. Travelling by car is a 1 hr 25 min drive (104.7 km) from the capital city, Reykjavík.

Thanks to its proximity to many other notable attractions, Flúðir is often included as an extra stop on the Golden Circle sightseeing route.

Why should you visit the Secret Lagoon?

Bathers at the Secret Lagoon

Visiting the Secret Lagoon allows you to experience the soothing warmth of Iceland’s geothermally-heated water. Slipping under its twinkling surface, you’re sure to feel your troubles melt away.

Thankfully, there are no seasonal restrictions, meaning you are free to visit during the winter or summer. Each has its benefits; the Northern Lights may very well decorate the night sky for those stopping by between September and March. The Midnight Sun offers eternal light for summer travellers, allowing you to stay out later and fit more into your day.

A visit to the Secret Lagoon also provides a brilliant opportunity to observe the steaming fumaroles and hot pots that surround the pool itself. Some even have names, such as Vaðmálahver, Básahver, and Litli Geysir, the latter of which is known to erupt every few minutes, offering guests a small spectacle in its own right.

A steamy fumarole

In between bathing sessions, step out and take an enjoyable stroll around these fascinating natural features – but don’t step too close! These miniature springs are incredibly hot. This brings us to our next point – not only do these hot springs offer interesting surroundings, but they have a practical purpose too, feeding into the Secret Lagoon, naturally filtering its water and keeping it at a pleasant 38-40 Celsius throughout the year.

As mentioned, the Secret Lagoon also happens to be the oldest outdoor pool in the country. With that in mind, it is pleasing to know you are taking part in an activity – relaxing in nature – that many Icelandic have done throughout the years prior, adding a real sense of authenticity to your visit.

What amenities does the Secret Lagoon offer?

A guest at the Secret Lagoon

The Secret Lagoon is more simplistic in its aesthetic and its amenities than many other spas in Iceland. Towels and swimwear are not included in the basic admission, so must be rented separately at 1000 ISK each. Make sure to spend time packing the essentials before visiting to avoid any unnecessary expenses.

We highly recommend booking your spot in advance , especially during the busiest times of the year. However, it is also possible to buy tickets at the front desk should you decide to stop by on impulse. The ticket prices are as follows:

Adults: 3600 ISK

Children (14 and under): Free

Seniors (and disabled): 2500 ISK

There are showers and changing facilities on-site, kept much the same as they always have been. Note that showering before entering the lagoon is mandatory, as it is with all pools in the country. Chastisement can be expected if one tries to skip this step, as a pre-entry shower is considered a foundational aspect of bathing culture in Iceland.

There is also a bistro that serves up refreshing drinks and a variety of delicious snacks. However, the bistro does not serve hot meals, so it is best to stop by the lagoon before or  after you’ve had lunch. (We recommend Restaurant Minilik , an Ethiopian eatery nearby.) Exceptions are made when bigger groups make arrangements in advance.

What attractions are near the Secret Lagoon?

A couple at geysir geothermal area

On average, visitors tend to spend around 1.5 – 2 hours at the Secret Lagoon, leaving plenty of time to check out points of interest in the area. Fortunately, there are many worthwhile sites nearby that are worth slotting into your schedule.

The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most popular sightseeing route, covering approximately 300 km (190 mi). It boasts three star attractions; Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal valley, and the powerful waterfall, Gullfoss, as well as other extra sites like Kerið volcanic crater and Friðheimar tomato farm . Almost all visitors to Iceland will want to make time to discover the beauty of this exciting drive. There is no better way to close it off than with a little bathing.

If you were to head in the other direction, you would find yourself on the picturesque South Coast . This lovely journey showcases an eclectic mix of landscapes, from ancient sea cliffs to black sand deserts, craggy shorelines, and sweeping green meadows. Attractions on the western side include the waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, while exploring further will take you to the dark beach, Reynisfjara.

The Secret Lagoon, Iceland’s oldest swimming pool in Iceland with natural hot spring water, holds a special place in the hearts of locals and travelers alike. Established in 1891, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The warm waters, maintained at a perfect temperature of 38-40°C (100-104°F) year-round, are surrounded by stunning geothermal areas, where visitors can witness the raw beauty of hot springs and even a small geyser that erupts every few minutes.

While the lagoon’s inviting warmth makes it a year-round destination, your experience can vary greatly depending on the season. Summer in Iceland offers extended daylight hours, allowing you to bask in the midnight sun’s glow. Winter in Iceland , on the other hand, provides a magical backdrop of snow-covered landscapes and the chance to witness the Northern Lights while soaking in the warm waters. 9 Simple Things to Know About Visiting the (not so) Secret Lagoon, Iceland

' src=

This beautiful man-made pool is fed directly from geothermal hot springs right along the path of the Golden Circle in Iceland. As the oldest pool in the country, the Secret Lagoon was built in 1891 and was for many years the local’s swimming spot. Recently, the secret is out and more people are visiting the Secret Lagoon, often as an alternative to the Blue Lagoon.

We visited this lagoon in the summer of 2022 and loved soaking in the warm water surrounded by the natural setting. Below you can read more about exactly how to visit the Secret Lagoon, Flúðir, and what to expect.

What to Expect at the Secret Lagoon

The Lagoon is located in an unimpressive parking lot behind some buildings, but once you enter the building, you enter a whole other world. The pool is directly behind the building just in front of several geothermal features including a small geyser, and some very hot pools. Behind the pool is a river and some old changing buildings made from stone. In addition to soaking in the pool, you can also take a very short walk on the boardwalk through these different features.

The water from the geothermal features drips down into the pool heating it – if you are looking for the hottest water, look towards the back of the pool where this water is entering the pool. There is actually enough water flow, that the entire water of the pool replaces itself every 24 hours. The pool itself is man-made, but the bottom is mostly mucky, especially towards the back.

View of the Secret Lagoon

You enter the pool down the main steps and can float in the water using some of the pool noodles and floaties provided, or sit around the sides in the seats available. There are also some picnic tables against the building and a few people sat at these who didn’t want to get in the water but were visiting with friends or family.

They do limit the number of tickets that can be purchased so while there were lots of other people in the pool with us, it wasn’t too crowded. You can purchase your tickets online in advance to make sure you have a spot.

Before you get in the pool, you will enter the gender-specific changing room where you can change into your suit and you must shower before entering the pool. It’s important to note that you are required to shower without your bathing suit on in open showers. This made one of my daughters very uncomfortable.

View of the Secret Lagoon

There are lockers in the changing rooms where you can lock and leave your things and we found the changing rooms pleasant and clean.

In addition to the changing rooms, they also offer other basics. You can rent a towel and even a bathing suit right at the front desk when you enter. There is also a simple cafe on site that offers some small food items such as sandwiches and cakes as well as water and soda.

Where is the Secret Lagoon and How to Visit?

The secret lagoon is located 1.5 hours from Reykjavik and if you have a car it is an easy ride and can be done as part of a visit to the Golden Circle. To get to the Secret Lagoon, follow the directions below:

  • Take Þjóðvegur 1, Suðurlandsvegur and Route 1 to Skeiða- og Hrunamannavegur in Flóahreppur
  • Follow Skeiða- og Hrunamannavegur to Hvammsvegur in Flúðir
  • Look for the Secret Lagoon Parking Lot (this is a basic parking lot that is behind some rather industrial-looking buildings)
  • Enter the Secret Lagoon through the welcome center

If you are coming to the Secret Lagoon from the north on route 30, you will take a left onto Hvammsvegur Rd. If you reach a sharp left in the road at Fludir, then you have passed the Lagoon.

If you are in Iceland without a car, the best way to visit the Secret Lagoon is on a tour. There are many options for tours of the Golden Circle that include a stop here for a swim. This tour gets great reviews, is small, and visits all the major sites.

Things to Know About Visiting the Secret Lagoon, Iceland

History of the secret lagoon.

The Secret Lagoon was originally built in 1891. For over 100 years, this man-made pool was truly a secret and used only by the owner. It wasn’t until 2005 when the owner opened the doors to the public and the Secret Lagoon became accessible to visitors.

Now the secret is fully out, and tickets often sell out in advance, especially during the summer and busy months.

View of the Secret Lagoon

Is the Secret Lagoon Crowded?

Since they limit the ticket sale for each time slot to the Secret Lagoon, it never gets too crowded. That said, we visited on a day that was sold out and there were lots of people in the pool with us. This is definitely not a quiet pool that you will have all to yourself. To avoid crowds, try booking early in the morning before the tours arrive.

Is the Secret Lagoon Worth It?

We found the Secret Lagoon was a perfect addition to our visit to the other sites on the Golden Circle. Most of the other sites include short walks or hikes, so breaking up the day, especially with kids in the warm water was a great decision, so we think the Secret Lagoon is 100% worth it.

Secret Lagoon Versus Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is an iconic Iceland experience and is located very close to Reykjavik and the airport. Many people try to decide on the Secret Lagoon versus the Blue Lagoon. Both sites offer a wonderful, but different experience. We chose the Secret Lagoon both for the more authentic experience and the cheaper cost. Here is a quick breakdown of the best parts of each pool:

Blue Lagoon

  • Easy to get to from town and the airport
  • Large pool area
  • The water is the runoff from a geothermal power plant

Secret Lagoon

  • Less expensive (kids visit for free)
  • More natural setting
  • You can see the geothermal features that heat the pool

Visiting During a Golden Circle Trip

Most people are visiting the Secret Lagoon during a visit to the Golden Circle. There are so many amazing sites to see on this route, that it’s worth making a full day of it and scheduling your day around your visit to this natural pool. You can see a list of some of the other amazing sites on the Golden Circle to include in your visit.

THE SECRET LAGOON – Siargao The Philippines

Jacqueline takes a dip in the water of the Lagoon

Siargao is a remote island that is entirely covered in coconut palm trees and all around the island are tourist spots all worth discovering.

And although the popular Siargao  tourist spots are worth the hype, there are still loads of overlooked spots on this undeveloped tropical paradise to discover.  The Secret Lagoon is one of them.

Over the past few years, thanks to the likes of Instagram and other social media, some tourist attractions have gained more and more popularity.

However, there are still tourist spots in Siargao that are off the list of many visitors . One of the places to visit in Siargao is the Secret Lagoon . Here you’d probably be all alone or even better, accompanied by the friendliest locals.

Though not that it’s any secret.  In fact you are bound to pass by this huge pool surrounded in a tropical landscape and mangroves .

Jacqueline and a new Filipino friend that we made on the barge at the Secret Lagoon next to a wooden boat

Where to Stay in Siargao

We usually choose our accommodation close to the tourist spots.

However, in Siargao things are a bit different.

There is one main tourist area and all of Siargao’s tourist spots are scattered around the island .

Therefore, the best option is to stay in General Luna which is Siargao’s favourite area. General Luna is also home to the world class surf beach  Cloud 9 . There are loads of restaurants, hip bars, cafes and accommodation to suit any budget.

Check this guide for the best areas to stay in General Luna .

These are our top picks for where to stay in General Luna.

SINAG HOSTEL : The location, ambience and most importantly the hosts have all contributed to making this one of the best hostels around. Guests have the facility of a kitchenette and can chill out and get to know other travelers in the lounge area. This property offers double or quadruple rooms and bunk beds.

CHECK PRICE AND BOOK SINAG HOSTEL ON AGODA HERE

BULAN VILLAS SIARGAO : This resort offers accommodation in the form of wooden Asian style villas surrounding a pool and garden. Guest can enjoy the beautiful outdoor space, an onsite bar and restaurant. Beside the villas, this property offers standard rooms, ideal for those on a budget but want to base themselves in a luxurious resort.

CHECK PRICE AND BOOK BULAN VILLAS SIARGAO ON AGODA HERE

MANGO TREES SIARGAO : A great choice for couples, families or groups since each unit can accommodate a minimum of 4 people and up to 8. With an outdoor infinity pool, barbecue area, lounge and garden you can enjoy and take full advantage of the facilities at this stunning property. And don’t worry about preparing your breakfasts, the hosts offer an a la carte breakfast each day.

CHECK PRICE AND BOOK MANGO TREE SIARGAO ON AGODA HERE

Wherever you stay you will need to venture out to reach the tourist spots.

So you may even consider going further North of Siargao in a village called Pacifico . Pacifico is another of Siargao’s tourist areas. However, it isn’t as popular as General Luna. But there are still a decent amount of restaurants and accommodations.

Check our detailed guide to Pacifico and north Siargao .

How to Get Around Siargao

One of the best way to get yourself to Siargao’s best corners and all the tourist spots is by scooter.

Roads are good throughout the island.

In General Luna there are loads of motorbike rental shops and prices start at around 500 PHP ($10.41) per day. And the longer you keep it, the less the price per day.

However, we found the best prices in  Dapa  and paid 275 PHP ($5.72) per day for 7 days.

The ferry terminal is located in Dapa. Walk out of the ferry terminal and you will then see a big sign for scooter rental on your right.

>>South Philippines Guides: are you planning a trip to Cebu , Siquijor , Bohol , Dumaguete , Siargao or Camiguin ? You can hop from one island to the other by ferry. Click on the yellow links for inspiration on your next trip!!

An alternative for those who aren’t comfortable riding a scooter is to rent a tricycle with driver . This is the more expensive option and will cost 2000 PHP ($41.63) for the day.

Where is the Secret Lagoon on Siargao

Siargao’s Secret Lagoon is a 20 minute ride out of General Luna . However, the place doesn’t have a name and isn’t listed on Google.Maps . Therefore, I will tell you the best way to get there.

If you write down San Vincent Ferrer Chapel on Google.Maps, the directions will get you to Malinao Road.

Less than 100 metres from the chapel, there is a Y intersection. Keep on the left and you will be cruising along Malinao Union Road. Where on one side you’ll have tropical scenery and on the other mangroves.

4 minutes from the intersection there is a curve around mangroves and the lagoon.

A big bamboo barge will indicate you’re in the right place.

The bamboo barge floating in the Secret Lagoon

Map of route to the secret lagoon on Siquijor

** The Secret Lagoon is marked in red on the map. The yellow mark is San Vincent Ferrer Chapel.

The green marks are  Doot beach  and Secret beach (more on Secret beach further down).

Here’s an mini itinerary combining these 3 spots.

Head first to Secret beach for surf, consider having a surf lesson here. Then hop on your scooter and ride to the Secret lagoon and then make your way to Doot beach for some relaxation under the shade of coconut trees.

Secret (Guiwan) Beach

Further down the road from Secret Lagoon there is also Secret Beach . That is the official name of this popular surfing spot . Unlike the lagoon which I decided to name ‘secret’.

It was on our way to Secret Beach that we first saw the lagoon surrounded with mangroves, exotic plants and trees and a huge barge floating in the middle.

I was driving so I only managed to get snippets of the place. That was enough to entice me and made it a point to visit on my way back from Secret beach.

A quick snap of us floating on the bamboo barge and soaking our feet

Our Experience at the Secret Lagoon

It was still mid afternoon when we were on our way back to General Luna from Secret beach so we stopped to check out our latest addition.

Local teens had gathered on the barge and for the sake of not intruding, I was about to drive off when one guy came running asking us to join them.

He even helped Jacqueline cross over a rocky pier leading to the barge.

One of the local teens called us to join them and he even helped Jacqueline cross over to the barge on a rocky submerged pier

An easier way of getting to the wooden barge is by boat from Doot Beach .

The boat trip costs 150 Pesos ($ 3.12) and is through the scenic mangroves.

The barge is also accessible from the road though at certain times of the day the rocky pier is completely covered with water.

And the last part of the path, it’s just some bamboo branches tied together. Jacqueline had tried to walk over these branches but fell off and landed in the water.

We ended up joining the group of locals while they had a little party.

We were also offered rum along with local snacks. Filipinos are always a happy bunch and love a good time out.

I guess this was one of those unexpected surprises you tend to get when in a country like the Philippines.

While we sat on the wooden barge with our feet dipped into the clear water, our new friends pointed to patches in the water which is where fresh water mixes with the salty water. And watched Siargao’s eagles eyeing their prey high in the sky.

Big birds of prey were flying over our heads

And for the Lagoon, well it isn’t that much of a secret since it’s on the side of a road leading to a popular surf spot. But we were the only tourists.

Other Siargao tourist spot guides.

  • The Bend  Palm Tree Swing  &  Coconut Trees View Deck  which are located close to one another and are in central Siargao
  • Tayangban cave and the pool opposite  located further north and close to the Palm Tree swing and the Coconut Trees view deck.
  • Taktak Falls  in north Siargao which is 1 hour 10 minutes from the Secret Lagoon

Secret lagoon in Iceland

There are numerous hidden gems and landmarks in Iceland that many tourists are unaware of. The hidden hot spring Secret Lagoon is one such location (sometimes called Secret hot springs ).

This is an alternative to the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon with paid entrance fee (far cheaper than the previous ones), and it is located in the heart of the Golden Circle ( check what to see there ), near the famous Strokkur Geyser and possibly Iceland’s most famous waterfall, Gullfoss .

In this article, I will try to answer all the questions  (with pictures and photos) and write my review of these hot springs, which I have visited many times.

What is the Secret lagoon in Iceland?

secret-lagoon-review

Secret lagoon (in Icelandic “Gamla laugin”) is one of Iceland’s oldest pools (man-made in 1891) and the pool itself looks just like that.

Unlike Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, these hot springs are in a natural setting, with real little geysers and a geothermal region nearby.

This lagoon is located in Flúdir, a small town in the south of Iceland known for its greenhouses and also the source of mushrooms (grown in these greenhouses) in Icelandic supermarkets such as Bonus .

Secret Lagoon only features one huge pool with a single temperature. There is no sauna or hot tub, like there is at the neighboring Laugarvatn Fountain. It is a basic, yet attractive lagoon that is appealing both during the day and at night.

Which one is better? Secret lagoon or Laugarvatn Fontana? Check out this comparison

The pool as a whole is not overly large. My guess is that approximately 100 people can fit here.

Swimming in the pool may be uncomfortable and overcrowded for many people.

I’ve always been fortunate for me to visit the Secret Lagoon when there were only around 40-50 other tourists, in which case you have enough of space to enjoy your own peace.

Every time I go through south of Iceland, I stop at these hot springs. It’s not far from the main ring road; just turn after 10 mins driving from Selfoss and you’ll be there in 40 minutes.

Prices at Secret Lagoon are among the lowest in Iceland for paid hot springs, and you may hire not only a towel but also a swimsuit if you do not intend to swim in the lagoon.

Even if they don’t have a swim-up bar like Sky Lagoon or Forest Lagoon, you can always go from the pool to the reception (approximately 10 meters) and buy a drink there.

The only disadvantage is that you must constantly have money or a credit card with you because there are no chips  on keys to count your drinks, as in modern lagoons.

My Secret Lagoon visit and review

visit-secret-lagoon

My most recent visit to this hidden lagoon in Iceland was sometime around April 2022.

It was part of our excursion around the Golden Circle, which began in the morning at the Hotel Laekur in Hella and ended in Flúdir, at the Secret Lagoon, immediately after the Aegissidufoss waterfall .

We arrived around 2 p.m. and found only one bus and a few jeep travel businesses in the parking area – we were fortunate that the large buses from the Golden Circle trips had not yet arrived.

We went to the showers after paying the entrance fee (we had no reservation) and got our drinks at the reception desk.

I must caution you if this is your first shower in an Icelandic pool or lagoon:

Showering naked, without clothes, in common showers (of course split into men’s and women’s sections) is mandatory in Iceland.

In the first part of the changing room you keep your shoes and then you continue to the department with lockers and showers, the left part is for men, on the right are women.

Here you can choose one of the free lockers where you can put your clothes and valuables. Each box has a key on an elastic band, which you can put as a bracelet on your hand. Then you continue with your swimsuit to the showers, of which there are about 5 – 7 in the men’s section in the Secret Lagoon.

After showering, just go outside and in a few steps you will reach the stairs to the pool itself.

We went to the rear part of the lagoon, which is not so deep and the water temperature is a bit lower there (I guess around 36 degrees celsius).

But thanks to the steam you have more privacy, you are not in the middle of the crowd and you can also observe the geothermal activity of Iceland with your own eyes.

We stayed in the Secret Lagoon for about 2.5 hours , then we started to get hungry and enjoyed enough relaxation so we could go on and try the local tomato soup in Fridheimar (if you are really hungry, then I would rather recommend the nearby restaurant Mika in Reykholt or the Efstidalur farm restaurant with great burgers).

Admission for two and two drinks cost us only ISK 6,900 in the Secret Lagoon (one admission for 3,000 ISK and one drink for 450 ISK).

It is not possible to buy a single ticket in the Sky Lagoon for this, so if you are looking for the cheapest hot springs, the Secret Lagoon is a good choice.

Is Secret Lagoon Worth It?

Compared to the Blue Lagoon, Sky Lagoon or Laugarvatn Fontana, the Secret Lagoon is probably the best in terms of price.

  • The pros that this lagoon offers are that it is located in an ideal location, especially for those who want to relax after a trip in the Golden Circle and end the day with a swim.
  • Excessive simplicity can be a disadvantage . There is only one swimming pool, the bar / reception only has a selection of smaller dishes, which are more suitable as snacks, and if you visit the Secret Lagoon just in time for all travel agency buses to arrive, it may be overcrowded.

Want to know more? Check the Jenna´s blog about her experience in Secret lagoon

Secret lagoon tickets and price

Admission prices at Secret Lagoon are a real positive.

Admission for adults costs ISK 3,000 / person, children under 14 have free admission and seniors (over 67) pay only ISK 2,200 for admission to the Secret Lagoon.

[ninja_tables id=”7298″]

For locals who visit the Secret Lagoon more often, several times a year, it is possible to purchase a multipass for ISK 24,000, which will give you 10 entries to these hidden hot springs.

Booking in Secret Lagoon – is it necessary?

If you are going to Secret Lagoon in high season, in the summer months (June to September) I would recommend you to make a reservation for lagoon in advance.

Sometimes there can be a problem with the lack of free space, especially in the afternoon and evening, when all tourists end their trip around the Golden Circle and end it in the Secret Lagoon.

You can book tickets in advance directly on the official SecretLagoon.is website or at Getyourguide.com

How to get to the Secret Lagoon – location and map

secret-lagoon-on-map

Get directions to Secret lagoon on Google maps

The location of this lagoon is really a bit hidden, but with navigation (and often without it) you will easily find the Secret Lagoon.

  • First you have to get to the town of Flúdir and then just continue along the main road that crosses Flúdir.
  • Between the area with greenhouses (you will see them if you are coming from Reykholt and the Golden Circle) and the gas station (to the other town) is a small valley where you will find a turn to the greenhouses.
  • Here you just continue for about a minute or two along the asphalt road and then you will see on the right side of the parking lot and the entrance to the Secret Lagoon.

Parking at the Secret Lagoon

secret-lagoon-parking

The local car park is large enough because there are a number of large buses stopping here every day, so you don’t have to worry about not coming in here.

If you arrive at the Secret Lagoon and you really won’t be able to find a place to park, I recommend you to skip the Secret Lagoon in this situation and try, for example, the Fontana wellness centre in Laugarvatn , which is nearby, or the local swimming pool in Fludir.

Facilites at Secret Lagoon

Secret lagoon offers a very simple facilities. There is one main building where you will find a reception, a seating area with several tables, changing rooms and showers.

Changing facilities

changing-facilities-secret-lagoon

Changing clothes in the Secret Lagoon is in simple spaces with lots of lockers, several benches and one mirror.

lockers-secret-lagoon

Lockers at Secret lagoon are old-fashioned, with a key, not a chip, like in Sky lagoon or Forest lagoon.

You take the key with you to the pool as a bracelet.

Changing rooms are shared here and you can’t pay extra for a private changing room or private shower .

Showers in Secret lagoon

As we mentioned in the introduction to the article, showering in Iceland in all lagoons and pools is without clothes, you must always be naked.

secret-lagoon-showers

Of course, this may not suit everyone, in which case Secret Lagoon is probably not the right choice for you.

The showers are in the same room as the changing room, but they are separated by a wall and a row, so you can’t see the visitors changing and they on you.

There are 5-10 showers in the men’s department, it should be similar in the women’s department.

Secret lagoon in winter

secret-lagoon-winter

Are you going to Iceland in the winter and wondering if it’s a good idea to visit the Secret Lagoon at this time ?

Definitely yes.

Winter in Iceland does not prevent you from enjoying the geothermally heated pool, and unless there is a strong storm, you may enjoy the Secret Lagoon perhaps even more than in the summer.

The only change from visiting in the summer is that you have to be a little more careful on the way from Fludir to the Secret Lagoon, it is possible that the road will be icy.

Also, be more careful when entering the pool directly in the lagoon, it is a few steps, but even so, the ice could surprise you.

Food in Secret Lagoon

I don’t think I’m the only one who gets hungry after swimming in a pool or lagoon in Iceland. Unfortunately, the nearest place where you could buy something warm, the stall with Fish and chips is closed.

In and around Fludir you have several options to eat.

The nearest 4 places to eat near Secret lagoon are:

  • Grund restaurant right in the “center” of Flúdir
  • Ethiopian restaurant Minilink
  • Farmers bistro , where you can buy food directly from the greenhouses
  • Kafi-sel at a nearby golf club

If you have enough time and would like to choose the best place to eat around the Secret Lagoon, then you can drive to nearby Reykholt (about 10-15 minutes by car) and try the famous tomato soup in the Fridheimar greenhouse .

secret-lagoon-food

If you prefer a more traditional restaurant, then I can recommend the restaurant Mika in Reykholt or the farm Efstidalur , where you can taste burgers or local ice cream.

Alternatives to Secret Lagoon

The natural spa in Secret Lagoon may not be an ideal option for everyone, so I have prepared several alternatives for you, whether you are looking for good hot springs in the Golden Circle or all over Iceland.

Fontana baths in Laugarvatn

Laugarvatn Fontana

Directly in the Golden Circle and near Secret lagoon you will find a suitable alternative in the town of Laugarvatn .

Here is the Fontana Spa, which, unlike the Secret Lagoon, has several pools, hot tubs, a sauna and you can cool off in the lake, which is next to the hot springs.

sky-lagoon-iceland

Sky Lagoon is a more expensive but also better quality alternative, which you will find in Reykjavik.

At Sky Lagoon you can enjoy a beautiful swimming pool overlooking the ocean and experience a seven-step ritual that includes saunas, a cool pond, massages and, of course, a wonderful atmosphere.

Forest lagoon

forest-lagoon-iceland

Forest lagoon is one of the newest paid hot springs. They were opened in May 2022 and quickly became very popular, thanks to their unique location and modern workmanship.

However, you will find this lagoon hundreds of kilometers from the Secret Lagoon, in the north, so if you are looking for an alternative only in the Golden Circle, it is not an ideal choice.

Tour to Secret lagoon from Reykjavik

reykjavik-tour-secret-lagoon

There are several travel agencies that can arrange a trip to the Secret Lagoon from Reykjavik . These trips are most often associated with a tour along the Golden Circle, where you can visit the most famous places you just have to see (national park, geyser, Gullfoss waterfall).

I recommend this tour from Getyourguide.com . The trip has over 1000 reviews and the best ratings, the price is one of the cheapest and the company that runs this trip is verified.

The tour starts in Reykjavik, where you can choose to be picked up from your hotel, then directly to the Secret Lagoon (to avoid tourists arriving in the afternoon), where you will spend about 1.5 hours (ideal time for the Secret Lagoon) and then set out to explore Golden circle.

If you´re interested, check the review on ClairePins.com .

How deep is the Secret Lagoon?

The water in the Secret Lagoon is 40 cm to 1 meter deep, depending on which part of the lagoon you are in. The largest part of the lagoon is about shoulder-length.

For comparison, for those who have ever been to the Sky Lagoon or the Fontana in Laugarvatn, the water depth in the Secret Lagoon is higher (except for the hot tubs in the Fontana).

How much time do you stay in the Secret Lagoon? (time limit)

There is an unlimited time limit in Secret Lagoon, if you want, you can stay here for the entire opening hours. Most often, they spend between 1.5 and 2.5 hours in these hot springs.

Because there is only one pool in the Secret Lagoon, there are actually no other activities, except perhaps a walk around the lagoon, where you can observe small geysers and bubbling water.

Is the Secret lagoon part of the Golden circle

Yes, the Secret Lagoon is part of the Golden Circle. It is 29 km south of Strokkur Geyser and 32 km from Gullfoss waterfall.

A bath in the Secret Lagoon is an ideal activity to end your trip around the Golden Circle (if you are starting in Reykjavik) or, conversely, ideal to start the day if you are coming from the east of Iceland.

What to bring to Secret lagoon

You don’t have to bring almost anything to the Secret Lagoon, just a swimsuit and a towel (but you can borrow both at the reception). If you travel around Iceland in the summer, sunglasses and flip flops may be useful.

For those who want to take a mobile phone with them and shoot videos or take photos, I will only remind you of the waterproof cover for the mobile phone,

What to bring to Secret Lagoon:

  • bathing suit
  • water bottle

Recommended things (but not necessary):

  • waterproof mobile phone case

Which city is Secret lagoon in

You will find the Secret Lagoon in the small Icelandic town of Flúdir , which you have probably never heard of before. It has about 820 inhabitants and the town is known mainly for the many greenhouses that you will find in the area.

Directly in the city you will find a gas station (just a few kilometers from the Secret Lagoon) where you can buy snacks and basic groceries, Vinbudín liqour store , 3 restaurants (Farmers bistro, Grund restaurant and Ethiopian restaurant Minilink).

You can stay here, for example, in Icelandair hotel Flúdir right in the city center. In addition to the Secret Lagoon in Flúdir, you can also take a dip in the local swimming pool or in the nearby natural hidden spring Hrunalaug hot pot .

Recent reviews of Secret lagoon from Tripadvisor and Reddit

“nice pool style hot springs. when we visited it was full of out-of-towners and no locals that we could tell. Large pool area, nice and warm. large clean changing and shower areas. small bar/snack area. nice steps to get in and out of the pool and a sitting ledge around the edge of the pool in the water. Line to get in wasn’t long and moved quickly.”

“We spent about 90 minutes in the hot springs. Its one natural pool with a gravel like floor. some portions are hotter based on the water flowing in from a few spots. Everyone seems to grab the noodles as they go into the hot springs to help float around. once we figured that out it was more enjoyable because you didn’t need to touch the floor. It seemed clean, but it was a little dull. Too many people to feel truly natural, and more like being in a large warm hot tub with a lot of strangers. I would not go back but the experience was fine. We also walked around the path to see the hot springs. the walk took about 5 minutes and then we went back in the hot springs to warm up again”

“Went to the secret lagoon at night and it was only me and a handful of other people. It was super relaxing and I enjoyed the quiet, at one point I was so relaxed the security thought I fell asleep, don’t think you would get a chance to do that at the blue lagoon”

Chasing waterfalls, lakes and lagoons: Here are 9 of Europe’s most stunning bodies of water

If the start of summer has got you craving a lush body of water to cool off in, there are countless kinds to discover.

Europe is home to a rich and intricate network of rivers, lakes, waterfalls and natural pools, from the spectacular to the calmly trickling.

So many holidays, experiences and tourism hotspots are based around water, as we look to splash around - or just enjoy the serenity of its liquid movement.

With the continent’s water resources threatened by climate change, it pays to have an even closer appreciation of the health and life within our precious waterways.

In celebration of the life-sustaining element, we’ve compiled a list of the nine best natural water spots in Europe.

Secret Lagoon, Iceland

The Secret Lagoon was first used as a water source in 1891 and is the oldest lagoon in Iceland. All the sulphur-rich thermal water is provided by a nearby geyser which spurts every few minutes.

Tara River, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina

Passing through Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tara River cuts through mountains and the Tara River Canyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the deepest canyon in Europe. The river is home to an abundance of wildlife and is popular with white water rafters.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Found in the Julian Alps, Lake Bled is of glacial origin and is a favourite with honeymooners drawn by the romantic setting.

Cachat Spring, France

The reason that Evian water is globally famous is the Cachat spring - formerly known as the Saint Catherine Fountain - which runs all year round. It is said to have cured the kidney stones of Count Jean-Charles de Liazer, an aristocrat fleeing the French Revolution.

  • Scenic trails and cheap travel: This eastern European mountain town is a budget hiker’s paradise

Inland Beach in Bornos, Spain

A special protection area for birds, the Bornos Reservoir is also well known for the yearly Lake Festival. This natural pool in Andalusia has clear waters that are perfect for swimming and fishing.

Valsan River, Romania

The Valsan River in Romania is home to a ‘living fossil’. The asprete is a fish that has been around for millions of years and can only be found on a 1 kilometre stretch of this river, as hydroelectric dams and other environmental impacts have eradicated it from elsewhere.

Mardalsfossen, Norway

At 705 metres high, Mardalsfossen is one of the highest waterfalls in Europe and could power the whole of Norway . Surrounded by stunning scenery, the two-tiered waterfall cascades into a hanging lake.

Lake Como, Italy

In the foothills of the Alps, Lake Como is an ideal holiday destination and hosts many resorts. The third biggest of Italy's great lakes, Como is a staggering 425 metres deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

This Icelandic Lagoon Has an Infinity Pool, Shuttle Service, and If You’re Lucky, Northern Lights Views

Less than 15 minutes from central Reykjavik, Sky Lagoon is a newer addition to the nation's lagoon scene.

secret lagoon tourist spot

Courtesy of Pursuit, Sky Lagoon

I flung my arms over the edge of the infinity pool and stared out into the sea ahead of me. This wasn’t supposed to be how the day went. Right this moment, I should have had my head craned up at the sky, awestruck by a colorful celestial sensation filling the sky for the first time. Instead, I had woken up on this late February day last year in Reykjavik, Iceland, to a message that my Northern Lights bus tour was canceled because of poor viewing conditions. I spent the morning getting turned away by every ferry operator, who said they weren’t running their normal tours because the aurora forecasts pointed to that night’s visibility being zilch.

So here I was instead, having woven through a maze of lava-stone canyon walls that opened up into this 230-foot geothermal pool at Sky Lagoon , in Kópavogur, less than a 15-minute cab ride from The Reykjavik Edition where I was staying in the capital’s central.

By no means should this stunning setting be anyone’s second choice. I shook myself out of my funk of what could have been. The Northern Lights simply weren’t in the cards anywhere in the island nation that night, and it was time to bring myself back into the moment.

Letting go of the stressful day so far, I let the warm waters embrace me, feeling smooth and gentle on my fingertips as my hands tread below the surface. It had almost been too easy to switch plans and veer here to the lagoon just outside town. I had splurged on the most luxurious of the three options: Sky. This included lagoon access, private changing facilities, and the Seven-Step Ritual .

Also offered were Pure (lagoon access and the Ritual) and Pure Lite (just a lagoon dip). Each package is also available with a transfer from the city center , making access to the site just that simple.

I spun around, taking in the scene around me. I had been to Iceland’s famed Blue Lagoon seven years prior — long before Sky Lagoon opened in 2021. Its silky blue waters and white steam were soothing on the eyes and soul, but I was overwhelmed by the crowds of people at the popular destination. (Though, the Blue Lagoon has The Retreat Spa for a more private experience.)

The mood was distinctly different during my visit to Sky Lagoon. Sure it was still packed with a healthy group of visitors, but there was a calmness about it. Somehow the dark lava stones surrounding us all created more restful energy, while the wide 180-degree view of the Kàrsnes Harbour waters and Mount Keilir in the distance, double-downed on that peacefulness.

I wound my way through the corners of the lagoon, enjoying drinks from the in-water bar, splashing under the waterfall, and then popping out of the far side to engage in the Ritual. Focused on alternating temperatures, the process guided me from the warm lagoon into a cold dip and then to a sauna, followed by a cold mist, sky scrub, steam room, and finally a shower. I milked my time with each step, sinking into every scent and sensation that came along with it, consciously exhaling.

After that last step, I emerged feeling like I had been wrapped in a cozy cocoon and freshly released into the world again. I dipped myself back into the main lagoon, lounging around, somehow feeling lighter on my toes.

As dinnertime came, I popped into the main facility, grabbing a fireside seat at the Smakk Bar. There, I enjoyed the most hygge-inducing cheese plate with a side of smoked salmon, plus a warm bowl of the minestrone-like daily soup, which filled me both literally and figuratively.

I set down my spoon with intention. This may not have been how I pictured my solo travel day in Iceland going on this mid-winter day, but it turned out to be quite spectacular.

Norbert von Niman/Courtesy of Pursuit, Sky Lagoon

Not quite ready to call it a night, I headed back into the lagoon for a nightcap, and to take in the after-dark experience. Bobbing lanterns now lit up the waters, creating an even more soothing hot spring setting. Slowly, I took in the visuals of every layer before me, from the sea to the sky. The watercolor chased the lava cliffs upwards to the sky so seamlessly, it was hard to see where one began and the other ended.

There was no way my camera phone could capture the beauty, but it was worth a try. I traced the same skyward path and looked at the image on my phone — and audibly gasped. There was a tint of green in the sky in my photo.

Just as I noticed this, two other girls behind me started pointing upward too. Could it be? On this day when there was zero chance of aurora visibility, could we have defied the odds?

Sure enough, we had struck gold. Subtle splashes of colors poked out of the sky from both sides, just enough for those of us who happened to be looking upward to notice. We squealed and pointed. We exchanged cameras and posed for photos. We immortalized the moment.

Not only were we experiencing the colorful skies we weren’t forecasted to see on this day, but we were seeing it all from the warmth of a hot spring lagoon — two iconic Icelandic experiences, merged into one.

I asked the Sky Lagoon to hail me a cab and was back to the hotel in a snap. Upon entering the lobby with a grin on my face, I caught the receptionist’s eye. The next thing I knew, I was giddily recounting to this total stranger how my day of aurora planning gone awry had led to the Sky Lagoon fulfilling my wish instead.

Taken by my enthusiasm, he handed me a full-sized Icelandic chocolate bar for no reason. Overwhelmed by that kind gesture, I finally revealed the secret I had held onto all day — it was my birthday.

Indulging in a day of solo travel had been a gift to me, and the poor weather forecast had felt like an ominous omen for the coming year. But instead what I learned is that by letting your plans go off the rails, you just might find an even more spectacular way to take in the magic of travel.
