Can Senior PGA Players Use A Cart?

The PGA Tour is a prestigious golf tournament that attracts the best players from around the world. But what about senior golfers? Do they have the same privileges as their younger counterparts?

One of the most common questions asked by senior golfers is whether or not they are allowed to use a cart. The answer to this question is not always straightforward.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the rules regarding carts in the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour. We will also discuss the pros and cons of using a cart for senior golfers.

By the end of this article, you will have a better understanding of the rules and regulations surrounding carts in professional golf. You will also be able to make an informed decision about whether or not a cart is right for you.

History of the Cart Rule

The use of golf carts in professional golf tournaments has been a controversial topic for decades. In the early days of the game, golf was played on courses that were much more difficult than they are today. The fairways were narrower, the rough was thicker, and the greens were smaller. As a result, walking was the only practical way to get around the course.

However, as golf courses began to be built with wider fairways, thicker rough, and larger greens, walking became more difficult and time-consuming. This led to the of golf carts in the 1950s.

At first, golf carts were only allowed on courses that were specifically designed for them. However, as their popularity grew, they began to be used on more and more courses. By the 1970s, golf carts were commonplace on professional golf courses.

In 1971, the PGA Tour adopted a rule that allowed players to use golf carts during tournaments. However, the rule stipulated that players could only use carts if they were over the age of 50. This rule was met with some controversy, as it was seen as giving older players an unfair advantage.

In 1981, the PGA Tour changed the rule to allow all players to use golf carts during tournaments. This change was made in an effort to speed up play and make the game more enjoyable for spectators.

The use of golf carts in professional golf tournaments has continued to be a controversial topic. Some people believe that carts give older players an unfair advantage, while others believe that they make the game more enjoyable for spectators. However, the use of golf carts is now firmly established in professional golf, and it is unlikely to change anytime soon.

Arguments for and Against the Cart Rule

There are a number of arguments for and against the cart rule in professional golf.

Arguments for the Cart Rule

  • Golf carts can help to speed up play. This is especially important on courses that are long and difficult.
  • Golf carts can make the game more enjoyable for spectators. Spectators can get a better view of the action when players are using carts.
  • Golf carts can help to reduce injuries. Players who are older or who have injuries may find it easier to play golf when they are using a cart.

Arguments against the Cart Rule

  • Golf carts can give older players an unfair advantage. Older players can use carts to get around the course faster, which can give them an advantage over younger players who are walking.
  • Golf carts can damage the course. Golf carts can damage the turf on the fairways and greens.
  • Golf carts can make the game less challenging. Players who are using carts may not have to exert themselves as much, which can make the game less challenging.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to allow golf carts in professional golf tournaments is a matter of opinion. There are valid arguments on both sides of the issue. However, the cart rule is now firmly established in professional golf, and it is unlikely to change anytime soon.

3. Current Status of the Cart Rule

The PGA Tour’s cart rule is currently in a state of flux. In 2018, the tour announced that it would be allowing players to use carts on a limited basis, beginning with the 2019 season. However, the rule has been met with some criticism, and it is not yet clear whether it will be permanent.

Under the current rule, players are allowed to use carts only if they have a medical exemption. To qualify for an exemption, players must submit a doctor’s note that states that they have a medical condition that makes it difficult for them to walk the course.

The rule has been met with criticism from some quarters, who argue that it gives an unfair advantage to players who are able to use carts. Others argue that the rule is necessary to protect the health of players who have medical conditions that make it difficult for them to walk.

The PGA Tour has not yet announced whether the cart rule will be permanent. However, it is likely that the tour will continue to monitor the rule and make adjustments as needed.

4. Potential Future Changes to the Cart Rule

There are a number of potential future changes to the PGA Tour’s cart rule. These include:

  • The rule could be expanded to allow more players to use carts. Currently, only players with a medical exemption are allowed to use carts. However, the tour could expand the rule to allow players who are over a certain age or who have certain injuries to use carts.
  • The rule could be tightened to make it more difficult for players to use carts. Currently, players are allowed to use carts on a limited basis. However, the tour could tighten the rule to make it more difficult for players to use carts, such as by requiring players to walk a certain number of holes or by limiting the amount of time that players can use carts.
  • The rule could be eliminated altogether. The tour could eliminate the cart rule altogether, allowing all players to use carts. This would likely be the most controversial change, but it could also be the most popular.

It is difficult to say what the future holds for the PGA Tour’s cart rule. However, it is clear that the rule is a complex one with a number of potential implications. The tour will likely continue to monitor the rule and make adjustments as needed.

Jack Nicklaus gives a strong clue about Tiger Woods playing on the senior tour

It has been one of the better golf barstool debates for a while: Will Tiger Woods play on PGA Tour Champions after he turns 50 in December 2025? I’ve always taken it one step further: Who will play more on the Champions Tour, Woods or Phil Mickelson?

That may be moot if Mickelson never returns from LIV Golf and has no chance to play with the older set. But it’s always been the belief in this corner that Tiger would, if he was physically capable of playing, be more inclined to hang with the older guys because he was, frankly, more popular among them and is more of a locker room guy than Phil. Beyond that, it’s always seemed like Mickelson would become more easily bored, though he certainly enjoyed winning four Champions events in short order once he turned 50.

MORE: Our guide to Tiger Woods' 82 career titles

Tiger’s senior plans have been undefined, but Jack Nicklaus might have provided some pretty strong clues in a podcast chat this week on Nick Faldo’s “Sir Nick Roundtable Chats.”

Faldo and Nicklaus were lamenting Woods’ struggles to walk for long distances in the aftermath of the injuries he suffered in his car accident, and Nicklaus brought up the idea of Tiger using a cart. Any player on the senior tour can use a cart, while regular tour players must apply for that ability if they have a disability.

“I told him, ‘Tiger, you’re eligible to take a cart.’ He says, ‘I’m not going to do that.’ He says, ‘When I get to the senior tour, I will.’”

Faldo followed up with the question we all had: “Oh. He’s actually thinking he would come back out at 50?”

“He wants to play the senior tour,” Nicklaus replied.

“Wow. How about that?” Faldo said.

“Well, he’s a competitor,” Nicklaus said.

“That’s probably a secret,” Faldo said.

Actually, Woods has hinted at playing with the seniors on a couple of occasions. Last December at the PNC Championship, he was asked about using a cart and said, “On the PGA Tour, no. On the sanctioned events where it’s allowed, yes, which is the Champions Tour, PNC, things of that nature.”

It makes a lot of sense. We figure that Woods believes he can tear it up on the Champions and what else is he going to do? His son, Charlie, turned 14 last month and may have some sporting events for Tiger to watch in ’26, but that’s a very brief window. It seems like the 15-time major winner would relish mixing it up and shooting the breeze with his old buddies.

If Woods does play Champions, the circuit figures to get a boost in popularity it has never seen before. And in that, if Mickelson isn’t there, it’ll be sad, because the two rivals embodied the sport’s greatness for 25 years.

‘Total clown show’: Pro sounds off on tour’s golf cart policy

Paul Goydos' since deleted tweet.

@PaulGoydosPGA

Paul Goydos does not like pros using golf carts and he made sure everyone — especially Jay Monahan — knew it Saturday night.

In a tweet — which he later deleted — Goydos posted a photo of several carts in a fairway ahead of him. In the accompanying text he wrote that it was unfair for players to use carts in competition on the PGA Tour Champions . He also took a shot at Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, for not doing something about it.

“I am now a a (sic) competitive disadvantage walking on the @ChampionsTour,” the tweet read. “If the PGA Tour had a commissioner that had an ounce of leadership skills he would ban them( I’m fine with ADA exceptions). It’s a total clown show.”

Carts are allowed on the PGA Tour Champions , with the exception of a few bigger events and the majors, but there are many restrictions regarding their use. For instance, players may not have their bags on their cart and their caddie is not allowed to drive the cart at any point during the round unless specified by tournament officials.

Goydos, not one to shy away from his opinions throughout his career continued defending his position. He replied to at least 32 tweets through Sunday morning.

In one reply, he explained how he has seen players in carts use it to drive ahead and survey the landing area for their next shot before walking to play their ball. The 2022 PGA Tour Champions Player Handbook states “When practical, carts should not be driven past your own ball or that of your playing partner, and should not be parked in close proximity to any ball in play.”

I’ve seen players drive there carts to the green, survey it, then walk back to there ball and play. They leave there carts by the green. Short par 4s — Paul Goydos (@PaulGoydosPGA) May 6, 2023

He also referenced multiple times the lawsuit against the PGA Tour by Casey Martin which allowed him to use a cart in competition under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Goydos said the Tour’s argument was that walking was integral to the game and he agrees with that viewpoint — although if using a cart allows someone with a disability to compete, he supports it.

Still, he claimed most players do not need a cart to compete. The 58-year-old said no players will skip next week’s Regions Tradition, a major on the over-50 circuit, because players can’t take carts in senior majors.

It’s rare you get a group of 3 walkers. Next week is the Regions Tradition, a major, walking only( except ADA exemptions) how many players will skip because they can’t take a cart? ZERO — Paul Goydos (@PaulGoydosPGA) May 6, 2023

Goydos also said that even though he feels it would be advantageous to use a cart and he’s able to do so, he felt it would be hypocritical.

By Sunday morning, Goydos deleted the original tweet, but the replies were still there.

Goydos has two wins on the PGA Tour and six wins on the PGA Tour Champions, the last coming at the 2017 3M Championship. He entered the final round of this week’s Mitsubishi Electric Classic tied for 21st, 11 shots off the lead.

"That won't be an issue" Tiger Woods to use golf cart in future Tour events

Six-time European Tour winner believes Tiger Woods will take the PGA Tour Champions up with their offer of a golf cart in 2026.

senior golf tour carts

Tiger Woods will more than likely take up the opportunity to use a golf cart on the PGA Tour Champions when he turns 50 at the end of next year, six-time European Tour winner Paul Broadhurst has told The Mirror.

Broadhurst, 58, believes there is a great deal of hope at the over 50s PGA Tour Champions that Woods, 48, will compete in a number of their tournaments on the schedule when he reaches the magic milestone on 30 December 2025.

NEW: Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's has 'soured over the past six months', confirms report

Woods has been playing a limited schedule so far this season as a result of his continued recovery from ankle surgery last season.

That came more than two years after a horror car crash in Los Angeles in February 2021.

The 15-time major champion has also had his fair share of back surgeries down the years, something that has plagued the latter stages of his PGA Tour career.

Woods made the cut but finished last at The Masters

Woods returned to action last month by setting a new cuts made record at The Masters.

But he would unfortunately have to play 23 holes on the Friday and that appeared to take the wind out of his sails heading into the weekend as he went on to finish solo 60th in dead last.

The former World No.1 made it clear at Augusta National he would continue to tee it up in tournaments for as long as he believes he can still win on the circuit.

Woods has this year decided to take up a role on the PGA Tour policy board as he attempts to help the circuit thrash out their ongoing framework agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Woods needs to capture one more tournament on the PGA Tour to set an outright wins record of 83.

He currently shares the record with late great Sam Snead.

The toughest part these days is walking 72 holes, declared Woods last month.

Hitting shots is not a problem, he concluded.

Woods admits walking is the hardest part for him

So could the lure of a golf cart and a more relaxed life on the PGA Tour Champions in two years' time be something Woods gives consideration to in 2026?

Broadhurst certainly thinks so, and believes Woods will follow in his own footsteps in taking up the offer of a golf cart on the PGA Tour Champions.

The 58-year-old Englishman has had dispensation since last year to use a golf buggy as he is no longer able to walk 18 holes due to his ankle, which requires medication and surgery.

Regular PGA Tour Champions events are also staged over 54 holes, which could be another big positive for Woods. Senior majors, however, are 72.

Broadhurst landed his sixth PGA Tour Champions and first in a golf cart at the Invited Celebrity Classic last month.

He told The Mirror :

"The tour are hoping Tiger is going to play the Champions Tour, no question.  "They are really hopeful and I think he has given out signs that he is more than happy to play once he turns 50. "He will be able to take a cart - that won’t be an issue for him. He will perhaps be looking forward to playing without walking around."

Broadhurst's comments about Woods echo those of record 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus.

Nicklaus has admitted Woods will accept a golf cart

In 2023, Nicklaus revealed a conversation he had with Woods about using a golf cart but only when reaches the seniors tour .

Nicklaus said:

"I told him, I said 'Tiger you’re eligible to take a cart', but he said 'I'm not going to do that, when I get to the senior tour I will.   "He'd love to play the senior tour. That's what I love about Tiger, he’s a competitor, he loves competition."

Woods will return to action at next week's second major of the season, the US PGA at Valhalla.

He went to 'scout' the course this afternoon.

Woods was last week handed a special invite into the US Open in June.

PGA Tour: When Can Professional Golfers Use Golf Carts?

PGA Tour Players can't normally use carts, but there are always exceptions

Tiger Woods rides in a golf cart

  • DESCRIPTION Tiger Woods rides in a golf cart
  • SOURCE Ben Jared / Contributor
  • PERMISSION license

Golf carts are standard on most courses and help ensure that the game is available to everyone, even those with difficulty walking. Yet on the PGA Tour, professional golfers walk the entire course with their caddy lugging the clubs without so much as a hand cart.

This is because all the major tours, the PGA Tour included, believe that walking is an integral part of the game and requires all golfers to walk the course. And until 2001, that rule was completely unchallenged.

Casey Martin and Golf Carts on the PGA Tour

Today there is an exception to the walking rule, but it took a Supreme Court decision to get the PGA Tour to change their policies. It all started with a professional golfer named Casey Martin. Martin’s career was on the up, and by 2000 Martin had earned a spot on the PGA Tour. However, Martin suffers from Klippel–Trénaunay syndrome, a circulatory disease that causes difficulty walking long distances.

After losing PGA Tour status , Martin was looking to earn his PGA Tour card through Qualifying School (Q School). Martin advanced through the first two rounds, but requested the use of a cart for the final round. When Martin was denied, he decided to sue the PGA Tour under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

By 2001, the case had worked its way up to the Supreme Court, where by a ruling of 7-2 the Court decided to uphold Martin’s right to use a golf cart. The Court essentially rejected the PGA Tour’s claim that walking was integral to golf and ordered the organization to provide a reasonable accommodation for Martin's disability.

Martin never did reach the heights of the PGA Tour again, playing for a few more years on the Web.com Tour (with the use of a golf cart) before transitioning to head coach of the golf team at the University of Oregon. He did make another bit of history, however, as he was allowed to use a cart at the 1998 U.S. Open where he finished tied for 23rd. This was the first time a golf cart had been used at a major. After qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Open through sectional qualifiers, Martin again used a cart at a major tournament.

In 2019, John Daly applied for and was granted an ADA exception from the PGA Tour to play the PGA Championship, becoming only the second golfer to use a golf cart at a major championship.

Tiger Woods told Jack Nicklaus he is going to play on the Champions Tour because they allow golf carts

  • Jack Nicklaus has revealed that Tiger Woods intends to play on the Champions Tour.
  • Golf's "senior" tour uses carts, and Woods feels he can compete if he doesn't have to walk.
  • Woods was forced to withdraw from this year's Masters because of an injury.

Insider Today

Tiger Woods was forced to withdraw from this year's Masters because of a lingering injury with 30 holes still to play.

We may never see Woods play full-time golf again, but there is growing hope that we will see a lot more of him in a few years.

On Nick Faldo's podcast , Jack Nicklaus revealed that Woods intends to play on golf's senior tour, PGA Tour Champions, and their rule on golf carts is part of the motivation.

Related stories

"[Tiger] actually can still hit the ball pretty well," Nicklaus told Faldo, via Golf.com . "But he can't walk. He can't walk. And I told him, 'Tiger, you're eligible to take a cart.' He says, 'I'm not going to do that.' He says, 'When I get to the senior tour, I will.'"

Woods, 47, is not eligible for the Champions Tour for three more years. Woods' longtime rival, Phil Mickelson, has been playing events on the tour and has four wins since turning 50 in 2020.

Woods has had several surgeries on his back , including fused vertebrae, and that was before he nearly lost his leg in a scary car accident . In 2021, Woods was driving an SUV before a tournament when he lost control and rolled off the road.

When Faldo pressed Nicklaus on this revelation, Nicklaus made it clear that this is what Woods wants.

"He wants to play the senior tour," Nicklaus said. "He's a competitor."

The Champions Tour has allowed golfers the option of using a cart since 2006 . However, in an interesting twist, carts are still not permitted in their five majors. Woods has recently limited his professional golfing to majors and events he hosts .

Before the Masters, Woods spoke during a press conference about how endurance has been his biggest challenge since the car accident and talked about using a cart on the senior tour.

"The ability and endurance of what my leg will do going forward will never be the same, I understand that," Woods said, later adding: "I just have to be cognizant of how much I can push it. Like Rory was saying, I can hit a lot of shots, but the difficulty for me is going to be the walking going forward. It is what it is. I wish it could be easier. I've got three more years, where I get the little buggy and be out there with Fred, but until then, no buggy."

Woods previously hinted at playing on the Champions Tour.

"I'm a great cart golfer," Woods said during an appearance on  Another Golf Podcast . "Not good at the walking part. So, I guess it's what, three and a half years, I get to ride the buggy like all those guys out there."

'A Total Clown Show' - Pro Criticises PGA Tour Champions Cart Policy

Paul Goydos says the use of carts on the PGA Tour Champions puts him at a "competitive disadvantage"

Paul Goydos takes a shot during the 2023 Chubb Classic

Paul Goydos has ignited a debate on the cart policy of the PGA Tour Champions, claiming it puts him at a competitive disadvantage.

Carts are permitted on the Tour, with some restrictions. However, the 58-year-old doesn’t use one. He took to Twitter to argue that the use of carts by others on the Tour is unfair and that PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has been weak on the issue.

In the now-deleted tweet, he wrote: “I am now at a competitive disadvantage walking on the @ChampionsTour. If the PGA Tour had a commissioner that had an ounce of leadership skills he would ban them (I’m fine with ADA exceptions). It’s a total clown show.”

Goydos, who famously shot 59 at the 2010 John Deere Classic , then responded to several tweets in his replies, expanding on his complaint. One person wrote: “Use a cart if you feel it gives an advantage,” but the two-time PGA Tour winner explained: “Understand your point. He also explained that he’d seen players take advantage of the fact they were using a cart, saying: “I’ve seen players drive their carts to the green, survey it, then walk back to their ball and play. They leave their carts by the green. Short par 4s.”

I’ve seen players drive there carts to the green, survey it, then walk back to there ball and play. They leave there carts by the green. Short par 4s May 6, 2023

That would appear to go against the guidelines set out in the 2022 PGA Tour Champions Player Handbook, which states: “When practical, carts should not be driven past your own ball or that of your playing partner, and should not be parked in close proximity to any ball in play.”

Goydos also suggested that carts are largely unnecessary anyway, pointing out that players who use them would likely not skip a Major, where they are prohibited. He wrote: “It’s rare you get a group of 3 walkers. Next week is the Regions Tradition, a major, walking only (except ADA exemptions) how many players will skip because they can’t take a cart? ZERO.”

The Champions Tour And Golf Carts

Golf is a walking game.

That’s why I was glad to see that the Champions (Senior) Tour has decided to abandon its policy of allowing players to use electric carts and instead force them to walk.

But several players on the Champions Tour apparently feel that the Tour has gone too far and are preparing to sue for the right to ride. The PGA Tour has been down this road before—in the Casey Martin case, where the Court ruled that Martin should be allowed to ride.

The Champions Tour President, Rick Geoge, says it’s about the image of the Tour. Gary Player, Tom Watson and Hale Irwin back his position. But to me, it’s a much bigger issue than image. It’s a question about the very nature of the game itself. Is golf simply a ball hitting exhibition, or is it an athletic event, where endurance and strength are a part of the game?

There a column on the issue here.

Tiger Woods will play the PGA Champions Tour in a cart due to injuries

Paul Broadhurst assures that the veterans tour will be happy to receive the former world number one..

A couple of years ago, Tiger Woods reiterated his refusal to play a tournament in a golf cart. However, after his considerable problems with injuries, Paul Brdoadhurst assured that the former world number one will have to use a buggy to play the PGA Champions Tour .

Broadhurst has two second places on the PGA senior tour in the United States, and his earnings have just reached $728,000, all thanks to the Champions Tour rules allowing him to play tournaments in a golf cart.

Last year, PGA officials granted the player a waiver to use the buggy. The English golfer can no longer play the 18 holes on foot due to the arthritis he suffers from in one of his ankles, and he needs medication to allow him to walk.

His situation is similar to that of Woods , whose injury history has taken a heavy toll on him in recent seasons. The former world number one has had to withdraw from several of his most recent competitions for health reasons, but Broadhurst said that would not be a problem on the tour for players over 50.

Woods on the senior tour

Broadhurst assured that if he joined the Champions Tour , " Woods will be able to take a cart, that won't be an issue for him. He will perhaps be looking forward to playing without walking around."

At the same time, Broadhurst assured that Tiger would be more than welcome on the veterans tour. "No question. They are really hopeful, and I think he has given out signs that he is more than happy to play once he turns 50 ," said the 2018 Senior PGA Championship champion.

Woods , 48, has battled multiple injuries throughout his career, but in recent years, his back and one of his ankles have been a constant source of discomfort. The Genesis Invitational this past February was his first tournament in 10 months, and he had to withdraw due to health problems ; however, this time, it was a cold and had nothing to do with his injuries according to a spokeperson.

Broadhurst continues to play despite injuries

For his part, the English veteran recalled that he suffers from severe arthritis in his right ankle that would prevent him from walking the 18 holes of a round. However, since the PGA Champions Tour allowed him to use a cart, he has been able to be more consistent with his game.

He explained that his ankle needs surgery, but that will have to wait until his final retirement from the circuit. "At the moment, I have been told it is a year to recover from, but I haven't got a year playing this game."

"I am 58 years old . That will have to wait for a few more years. At the moment, we are fortunately able to take a cart. I can get around that way, and it doesn't seem to be affecting my golf," indicated the player.

HUALALAI GOLF COURSE kicks off the senior pga tour schedule showing an ariel photo of the golf course, pga senior tour schedule 2023

Tournament History

Originally named the MONY Tournament of Champions, the event was played in California, Mexico, and Puerto Rico before finding a stable home in Hawaii. The inaugural tournament took off in 1984 when Orville Moody claimed a 7-stroke win over Dan Sikes.

Since then, the name has changed on eight occasions, with the current title sponsor, Mitsubishi, the longest-serving partner. The lush fairway and ocean backdrop of Haualalai golf club has been on the Senior PGA Tour schedule since 2006.

The Kona-based golf course is a par 72 design and measures 7,117 yards off the back tees on an average day.

⛳️ Fun Fact: When Senior Golf Source polled the PGA Tour Champions caddies, this was their favorite location, with Pebble Beach in a close second.

Chubb Classic

Tiburon Golf Club, photo taken by Senior Golf Source

The Chubb Classic debuted in 1988 as the Aetna Challenge and was played at The Club at Pelican Bay until 1990. Gary Player , a fellow citizen of South Africa (like me), won the 1988 edition. And another compatriot, Harold Henning, finished second in the 1989 vintage, two strokes behind Gene Littler.

The tournament has featured at 12 golf courses since its inception, with the latest change in 2021. The organizers switched the venue to the Tiburon Black Course, designed by Australian Greg Norman. The Tiburon Black course is a par 72 layout reaching 6,945 yards off the back tees.

Our team particularly loves this course in Naples because of its idyllic location near beaches and plenty of sunshine in southwest Florida. However, be prepared; the Ritz Carlton is on the property, and staying here tends to come at a hefty price.

Trophy Hassan II

Royal Golf Dar Es Salam

The Trophy Hassan II tournament is older than the PGA Tour Champions itself. The first event teed off in 1971, called the Moroccan Grand Prix, which saw Orville Moody defeat Jerry Heard by 2 strokes.

Prince Moulay Rachid hosts the event in honor of his father, Hassan II, and it is played at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam. The tournament was removed from the schedule between 1986 to 1990 but returned in 1991 when Vijay Singh defeated the late Payne Stewart in a playoff.

The Royal Golf Dar Es Salam is situated on a 440-hectare estate, winding through cork oak forests, and is littered with lakes and bunkers.

Cologuard Classic

Omni Tuscon National Resort

The Cologuard Classic is the third event on the annual calendar and is one of the newest editions of the Tour. It was launched in 2015 at the Omni Tucson National in Arizona as the Tuscon Conquistadores Classic. The name changed to its current form in 2018.

Marco Dawson is the first name on the silverware after bagging the inaugural title in 2015 by 2 strokes over Barty Bryant. The Omni Tucson National reaches 7,328 yards off the back tees with a total par rating of 73.

Hoag Classic

Hoag Classic, PGA Senior Tour

The first tee shot in the Hoag Classic was struck in 1995, but back then was known as the Toshiba Senior Classic. The name remained in 2005 when “senior” was dropped from the title and became the Toshiba Classic. Toshiba continued as the title sponsor until 2018 when Hoag took over.

The William F. Bell designed Newport Beach Country Club is the host golf course and has set the stage for several fierce battles since its inception. Bob Murphy and Jay Sigel entered the record books in 1997 when the duo went 9 holes in a playoff before the winner was decided.

Newport Country Club is a par 72 golf course which is not as long as some on tour, measuring 6618 yards off the Championship tees.

The Galleri Classic

The Mission Hills Country Club

The Galleri Classic entered the Tour Champions fray in 2023, holding its first outing at the Dinah Shore course at the Mission Hills Country Club, Coachella Valley, California. The Par 72 golf course played 7,112 yards for the Galleri on average.

David Toms surged to victory in the inaugural version of this tournament played in 2023, beating Steven Alker by 4 shots.

Invited Celebrity Classic

Invited Celebrity Classic

Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas, hosted the ClubCorp Classic in 2022, adding a new event to the Tour schedule. The event name changed to the Invited Celebrity Classic after the company rebranding in 2022.

The course measures 6973 yards off the black tees, and 71 is a par score. Scott Parel from Michigan was the first to get his hands on the trophy in the 2022 edition. Mark Hensby from Australia took the second iteration of the event in 2023 with a 54-hole score of 12 under par.

Mitsubishi Electric Classic

TPC Sugarloaf

The PGA Tour Champions made the Mitsubishi Electric Classic a reality in 2013. However, its original title was the Greater Gwinnett Championship. Bernhard Langer won the inaugural event in 2013 by 3 strokes over Tom Lehman and Tom Pernice Jr.

TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia, has put on the spectacle since it teed off over a decade ago. The 27-hole facility was designed by “The Great White Shark,” Greg Norman. The Stables/ Meadows are the usual combination for tournament events, but it may change depending on the years.

The Meadows and Stables 18-hole combination totals 7322 yards off the back tees and is a par 72 layout.

Insperity Invitational

Credit: The Woodlands Country Club

The Insperity Invitational has cemented its place as a mainstay on the annual sporting calendar in Houston. It started in 2004 as the Administaff Small Business Classic and immediately entertained us. Larry Nelson crawled his way back from 7 shots down to force a playoff with Hale Irwin.

Nelson bagged the title, and the tournament holds firm two decades on. Since Administaff changed their name in 2008, the event is now the Insperity Invitational. It was initially played at Augusta Pines, Texas, but is now hosted by The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course.

The par 72 Tournament Course at Woodlands Country Club extends 7025 yards off the back tee. John Daly set the par 3 16th alight in the 1994 Shell Houston Open when he pured a 6 iron off the tee and drained the shot for a memorable ace.

Principal Charity Classic

Credit: Wakonda Club

The Principal Charity Classic resumes regulation tour play in June after back-to-back Majors in May. Des Moines, Iowa, has welcomed professionals with open arms since the event commenced in 2001 as the Allianz Championship.

Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines hosted the inaugural showing of the Principal Charity Classic. It moved twice between 2001 and 2012 before finding solace at the Wakonda Club, which has held the Classic since 2013. Wakonda totals 6,847 yards off the back tees and is a par 72.

Jim Thorpe won the first-ever Principal Charity Classic beating Gil Morgan by 2 strokes in 2001. Jay Haas has lifted the trophy three times, more than any of his peers.

American Family Insurance Championship

University Ridge GC, Madison, WI

Tour Champions professionals stay in the midwest for the American Family Insurance Championship played at University Ridge Golf Club, Madison, Wisconsin. Steve Stricker is the tournament host, and 78 of the tour’s best players are penciled in on the tee sheet.

The Championship was born in 2016, and Kirk Triplett claimed a 2 shot victory over Bart Bryant and Mike Goodes. University Ridge is a par 72 Robert Trent Jones Jr design and is slightly lengthy for senior tour pros, stretching 7,259 yards.

The front nine is relatively open, while the back nine is lined with trees and demands course management from tee to green.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Open

En-Joie Golf Club taken by Senior Golf Source showing their beautiful fairways and a small pond.

After a stint in the midwest, the tour heads east to Upstate New York, where the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open awaits. En-Joie has gracefully hosted the event since its inception in 2007, where R.W. Eaks triumphed over Bruce Vaughan by 3 strokes.

En-Joie is a 7,030-yard track off the back tees, and 72 is a par score for the round. The course was originally designed and built by local businessman George F. Johnson, but upgrades were made in 1998 and 1999. The greens transformed from flat round greens into challenging large and undulated dance floors.

We particularly “enjoy” the En-Joie course for its local, friendly vibe and beautiful rolling hills. While it’s not nearly as polished as most of the courses on this tour, we found it to be one of the best for spectators, with free tickets and giveaways.

Boeing Classic

Credit: Snoqualmie Ridge Course

The Boeing Classic has become a permanent fixture on the PGA Tour Champions and Seattle sporting calendar. 2005 saw the first tee shot struck in the tournament when it was the Boeing Greater Seattle Classic.

David Eger claimed the inaugural trophy winning by 3 strokes over Tom Kite. However, in 2007, fans were treated to the largest contingent of players in a Tour Champions playoff. Seven players ended the tournament on 9 under par. Zimbabwean Denis Watson would eventually steal the show as he drained an eagle putt on the second playoff hole to bag the crown.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed Club at Snoqualmie Ridge has hosted the tournament since it launched, frequently challenging the Pros. The 7,264-yard layout with a par score of 72 suits long hitters given its wide fairways. It also treats you to spectacular mountain and water vistas.

Shaw Charity Classic

Canyon Meadows G&CC, Calgary, AB, Canada

The Tour makes its way north to Calgary, Canada, in mid-August for the Shaw Charity Classic, a mainstay on the schedule since 2013. Although the course plays a par 72 for amateurs, they corrected the rating to a par 70 for the Shaw Charity Classic.

Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club has welcomed the tour since 2013, measuring 7,158 yards from the black tees. In addition, the course sits at 3,590 feet above sea level, adding extra yards to each shot. Rocco Mediate lifted the first trophy in 2013, obliterating the field by 7 strokes.

The Ally Challenge

Warwick Hills

Grand Blanc Township in Michigan is the venue for the Ally Challenge, one of the newer events on tour. The PGA Tour Champions arrived at the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in 2018 when Paul Broadhurst became the first champion.

The 7,112-yard golf course is a par 72 layout designed by Joe Lee and is relatively long for senior tour players, and is lined with trees. This demands a combination of driving distance, fairways, and greens in regulation.

Ascension Charity Classic

Norwood Hills

The Ascension Charity Classic is another tournament in its infancy on tour. It teed off for the first time in 2021 when David Toms beat Dicky Pride in a playoff. The St Louis-based Norwood Hills has hosted the first two Ascension Charity Classics on their West course, which is no stranger to tournament golf.

Norwood Hills plays 6,992 yards, and 71 is considered a par score. The fairways are lined with trees and demand an accurate tee shot to attack the flag on approach. In addition, 5 lakes are scattered throughout the links and come into play for half the round.

Sanford International

Minnehaha Country Club

The tour returns to the Midwest in September for the Sanford International, another relatively young event. 2018 saw the Sanford International debut, and Steve Stricker showed his class to defeat Tim Petrovic and Jerry Smith by 4 shots.

Minnehaha Country Club is the host venue, littered with water hazards and tree-lined fairways. It is not the longest golf course on tour, reaching 6,530 yards off the burgundy tees, but it does demand precision to walk away with a low round.

Pure Insurance Championship

Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the courses on the senior pga tour schedule.

As we enter the back end of the season, the Tour Champions journeys to the West Coast for the Pure Insurance Championship. The famed Pebble Beach is the host venue for the event, originally titled the First Tee Open. However, organizers have changed the name on five occasions.

The Pure Insurance Championship became the official title in 2017 and has remained since. Craig Stadler lifted the cup in the inaugural event in 2004, winning by 3 strokes over Jay Haas.

Constellation Furyk & Friends

Timuquana Country Club is a beautiful plantation-style club that backs up to the water.

The Constellation Furyk and Friends event kicked off in 2021 as a way for the Jim and Tabitha Furyk Foundation to raise funds for at-risk children. Timuquana Country Club puts on the event, which was first won by Phil Mickelson in the 2020-21 season.

The Country Club is located a short distance from my base for two years when I was navigating the high seas. Timuquana measures 6,949 yards from the back tees and is a standard Par 72 layout. Finally, its tree-lined fairways leave little margin for error, demanding accuracy off the tee.

If you’re traveling with family, Furyk & Friends is one of our favorites to bring the kids. In 2023, the tournament went all out with food trucks, a petting zoo, free ice cream, and more!

SAS Championship

Prestonwood showing the beautiful water hole that requires a bridge to access it.

The SAS Championship has featured on the PGA Tour Champions since 2001, played at the Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, North Carolina. Bruce Lietzke won the inaugural outing and went back to back in 2002.

The 54-hole complex opts for the Meadow and Highlands combination of courses for the SAS, playing 7,237 yards and carrying a 72-par total.

Dominion Energy Charity Classic

The Country Club Of Virginia

The Dominion Energy Charity Classic is the first playoff round for the Charles Schwab Cup. The top 72 players on the money list will be invited to the no-cut event after the SAS Championship.

The Country Club of Virginia in Richmond has hosted the event since it teed off in 2016 when Scott McCarron bagged the title. The venue is dominated by tree-lined fairways and the odd water hazard, making accuracy vital for success.

Simmons Bank Championship

first tee photo at the Pleasant Valley Country Club

The top 54 golfers on the money list after the Dominion Energy Charity Classic progress to the Simmons Bank Championship. The penultimate event of the year is hosted by Pleasant Valley Country Club, a parkland golf course with lightning-quick greens.

The tournament has a new headline sponsor this year after the partnership with TimberTech expired at the end of 2023.

Charles Schwab Cup Championship

Phoenix Country Club

The entire season has built up to this moment, where the remaining top 36 players are the only ones invited. The tour travels to Phoenix Country Club, Arizona, for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Puerto Rico, Oklahoma, and California all hosted the event before its switch to Arizona in 2014. The initial Charles Schwab Cup Championship was called the New York Life Champions played in Dorado, Puerto Rico, with Mike Hill winning the first two editions.

The parkland-styled Phoenix Country Club has hosted the cup since 2017,  measuring 6,764 yards, and it is a par 71.

The penultimate PGA Tour Champions major hits our screens in mid-July 2024 when the Kaulig Companies Championship returns to Firestone Country Club. The South Course or the “Monster” as it is colloquially known, is the chosen track.

It measures 7,400 yards off the Championship tees and is a par 70, with only one par 5 on each nine. The course is best suited to long hitters, and Jerry Kelly will attempt to win here for the third time in four years.

The inaugural Kaulig Companies Championship went ahead in 1983 at Canterbury Golf Club in Beachwood, Ohio. Miller Barber was the first to etch his name onto the trophy defeating Gene Littler by one stroke.

Senior Open Championship

This is the third time that ‘Car-nasty hosts the best in the seniors game, and Alex Čejka will look to defend the title he won at Royal Porthcawl in 2023.

Gale-force winds and rain always remain a threat. We will see plenty of punch shots on approach and bump and runs around the dance floor. The first official Senior Open Championship was played at Turnberry in 1987 as Neil Coles walked away with a one-stroke victory.

Harrington to tee it up at The 2024 Senior Open

Three-time Major Champion Pádraig Harrington will return to the site of his maiden Open Championship victory when he tees it up at Carnoustie Golf Links in The Senior Open Presented by Rolex from July 25-28, 2024.

Harrington

The Irishman, who won back-to-back Claret Jugs in 2007 and 2008, will be looking to avenge his near-miss at Royal Porthcawl last year – where he lost in a play-off to eventual winner Alex Čejka – as Europe’s only Senior Major Championship returns to Carnoustie for a third time later this year. Tickets are selling fast, so click here to purchase yours .

The 2007 Open provided great drama for the golfing public as Harrington twice found the Barry Burn at the 72nd hole before a superb pitch to five feet saved a double bogey, going on to triumph in a four-hole play-off against Sergio Garcia.

The three-time major and 15-time DP World Tour winner, who has also won seven times on the over-50s circuit, including the 2022 US Senior Open, is excited to return to Carnoustie, a venue where he has not only tasted success on the Major stage, but also on the DP World Tour as a two-time winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

“Carnoustie is a highly respected Championship golf course and I am pleased that we will get the chance to play The Senior Open there this year,” he said.

“It holds a special place in my heart as the venue where I won my first Major, but I also love going back each year as part of the Dunhill. The course has the reputation of being one of the toughest courses on the Open Champion rota and I would certainly agree with that.

“It is a great strategic test of golf, and I’m really looking forward to playing it under major championship course set-up conditions again this year.”

Germany’s Čejka defeated Harrington in a play-off to win last year’s Senior Open Presented by Rolex as he landed his third Senior Major Championship on a dramatic final day at Royal Porthcawl.

The four-time DP World Tour winner got the job done at the second extra hole, making a two-putt birdie at the par-five 18th in punishing conditions, and Harrington will this year go in search of becoming only the fifth man to win both The Open and The Senior Open.

This will be the third time the Championship has visited Carnoustie, with 12-time Senior Major winner Bernhard Langer winning in 2010, before Paul Broadhurst’s triumph in 2016.

Tickets start at £15 for adults, £15 for youths aged 16-24, while tickets for under 16s are completely free with any paid ticket. Fans are urged to act now to avoid disappointment as there are only a limited number tickets available so please act quickly to ensure you do not miss out. Click here to purchase yours .
