Sonesta Travel Pass Overview

Sonesta operates more than 300 properties worldwide. It has properties in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico), Canada, Saint Maarten, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, and Peru.

Across 7 brands, the Royal Sonesta brand is considered as the most luxurious, although the top-tier resort is a Sonesta Hotels and Resorts property, not a Royal Sonesta property.

Sonesta Travel Pass Benefits

Sonesta travel pass status.

Sonesta Travel Pass members get several benefits just for enrolling in Travel Pass. These benefits include complimentary upgraded Wi-Fi and the ability to earn Sonesta points.

Value of Sonesta Travel Pass Status

Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria club lounge

The Sonesta Travel Pass program has been updated and it now has 3 elite-level tiers beyond the basic member level, but ultimately the benefits are minimal. The most useful are early check-in and late checkout for 3 hours beyond the normal times (subject to availability) and complimentary room upgrades (subject to availability).

In our opinion, the biggest benefit jump comes when you move from Silver to Gold Sonesta Travel Pass Elite status — you’ll get priority self-parking and complimentary continental breakfast.

There really isn’t much benefit to the top-tier Platinum level except a higher-tier bonus point multiplier.

Earning Sonesta Travel Pass Status

Earning Sonesta Travel Pass Status is straightforward and extra benefits start at just 10 nights.

If you hold the Sonesta card, you’ll automatically receive Sonesta Travel Pass Gold status.

Sonesta Travel Pass Lifetime Status

Sonesta travel pass status match.

If you have any hotel elite status that offers similar benefits to the tier you’re interested in, all you need to do is email Sonesta Travel Pass at [email protected] with a copy of your current hotel loyalty membership status in the other program and your Sonesta Travel Pass member ID to get matched!

You can use any comparable hotel loyalty program, including Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy, and Choice Privileges.

How To Earn Sonesta Travel Pass Points

The easiest way to earn Sonesta Travel Pass points is through paid hotel stays.

Earning Points on Stays

Base Points: When you stay at any participating Sonesta property worldwide and book a qualified room rate (excluding reward stays, group rates, day use, third party reservations, online travel agencies, and certain other discounts), you will earn 10 points per $1 spent .

Elite Status Bonus:  Currently, there’s no elite status bonus for earning points.

Exclusive Offers: Sonesta Travel Pass offers a variety of promotions to earn additional bonus points. These promotions are accessible via the Exclusive Offers page in your membership dashboard. The promotions can vary from bonus points per night to 2x or even 3x points. You can also get upgrades and discounts with exclusive offers.

Earn Sonesta Points for Hosting Events

Sonesta has a couple of different promotions that allow you to earn more points for hosting meetings and events.

To start off, if you book a group rate for 30 or more room nights (the number of rooms multiplied by the number of nights), you’ll get 50,000 bonus points. Those who book 15 to 29 room nights will earn 25,000 points.

If you plan a wedding with Sonesta Travel Pass, you will earn 10x points per dollar spent (up to 150,000 points), plus an extra bonus of up to 250,000 points, depending on your catering spend.

Lastly, if you’re booking a group rate (not as the host offering the group rate) as an attendee, you can earn 10 points per dollar (5 points per dollar at Simply Suites)!

Share Sonesta Travel Pass Points

Unfortunately, you can’t share or transfer without a specific redemption in mind.

If you  do have a redemption you want to book for someone else, you can only do so for immediate family, meaning parents, children, spouse, and siblings.

You must call the customer care desk and submit a transfer form to accomplish the transfer.

Earn Sonesta Travel Pass Points With Credit Cards

Unfortunately, the only way to earn Sonesta points through credit cards is with the co-branded Bank of America card.

Sonesta Travel Pass doesn’t have any transfer partnerships with flexible currencies like Amex Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Other Ways To Earn Sonesta Travel Pass Points

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of other ways to earn Sonesta Travel Pass points.

Branded and Partnered Credit Cards

Currently, there’s only 1 credit card that allows you to earn Sonesta Travel Pass points, the Sonesta World Mastercard ® Credit Card , which is issued by Bank of America.

At the moment, there are no transfer partnerships from the major transferable currencies that can allow you to earn Sonesta points.

Therefore, the best way to earn Sonesta points through credit card spending is to make purchases on the Sonesta card.

How To Redeem Sonesta Travel Pass Points

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort Casino and Spa St Maarten

The primary objective of accumulating Sonesta Travel Pass points is to redeem them for free nights at a Sonesta property.

There are no blackout dates, and you can book a free night for as few as 10,000 points. The only consideration is that the hotel you’re booking must have standard room availability.

Types and Cost of Room Awards in Sonesta Travel Pass

Currently, you cannot use a mix of cash and points to book room awards in Sonesta Travel Pass.

Also, you can only book standard rooms with Sonesta Travel Pass points (you cannot book upgraded rooms or suites with points).

You can redeem points online or over the phone (call 855-622-2160 or 617-658-0078).

The number of points you redeem will depend on which tier the property falls under.

If you’ve never stayed at a hotel with “Sonesta” in the name, that could change soon. The small Sonesta hotels chain is growing rapidly, planning to add around 100 hotels this spring to expand its portfolio to about 300, nearly tripling its size in a little over a year. You’ll find Sonesta hotels in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America under the brand names:

Sonesta Hotels and Resorts.

Royal Sonesta.

Sonesta Select.

Sonesta ES Suites.

Sonesta Simply Suites.

Sonesta Posadas del Inca (Peru).

A lot of newly added Sonesta properties were previously part of the InterContinental Hotels Group, and rumor has it a batch of hotels in the Marriott Bonvoy program may also jump ship to join Sonesta. So if you’re a member of IHG Rewards or Marriott Bonvoy — and even if you’re not — it’s a good time to learn about the Sonesta Travel Pass loyalty program. Here’s what you need to know.

How to join Sonesta Travel Pass

Like other hotel loyalty programs, Sonesta Travel Pass membership is free. Just sign up at the Sonesta Travel Pass website by supplying your name and email address and creating a password. Then, starting with your next stay, you can enjoy membership benefits including upgraded Wi-Fi, hotel offers and chances to earn and redeem points.

How does Sonesta Travel Pass work?

Sonesta Travel Pass is similar to most other hotel loyalty programs. Members accrue points and exchange them for free hotel stays, and elite members get even more benefits when they stay with Sonesta properties.

Members earn 10 Sonesta Travel Pass points for every eligible dollar spent at properties booked through Sonesta, either on its website or by phone. Everyone earns a flat rate of 10 points per dollar spent, no matter their elite status. There is no bonus for elite members like with other programs.

Members can redeem points at Sonesta Travel Pass-participating properties by calling Sonesta directly. The number of points you’ll need for an award night are based on a tier system , with lower-end Tier 1 properties going for 10,000 points per night, high-end Tier 12 properties going for 60,000 points per night and lots of mid-priced options in between.

Tier 1 hotels include the Sonesta Simply Suites Charlotte University in North Carolina and the Sonesta Simply Suites Dallas Galleria in Texas and can be booked for 10,000 points per night. At the other end of the spectrum, the adults-only Sonesta Ocean Point Resort in St. Maarten is a Tier 11 property. For 50,000 points per night, it packs in a lot of value since it is an all-inclusive.

Sonesta points expire after 24 months of inactivity. If you notice that points haven't hit your account following a recent stay, Sonesta Travel Pass makes it easy to request missing points online .

What you should know about Sonesta Travel Pass elite tiers

sonesta travel pass cost

There are two elite status levels above standard membership, and neither is difficult to achieve. “Member” status is the entry level, and anyone who joins the program is eligible for free wireless internet and discounted member rates. There’s also an automatic $5 credit for drinks or a snack at Sonesta ES Suites, which is Sonesta’s limited service brand with grab-and-go food and drink offerings.

You reach Preferred status by staying six qualifying nights per year. Preferred members can request early check-in or late checkout (up to three hours earlier or later) and get a guaranteed bed type. Preferred elites staying at Sonesta Hotels and Resorts or Royal Sonesta properties also qualify for space-available room upgrades and get a slew of discounts like an automatic $10 credit for drinks or a snack at Sonesta ES Suites hotels and a 10% discount on dining and resort amenities at Sonesta Hotels and Resorts or Royal Sonesta properties.

The highest membership level in the program is called Elite status, which you earn by staying 12 nights per year at participating properties. Elite members get all the perks of Preferred status plus priority parking, a room upgrade, welcome amenity, complimentary nonalcoholic welcome drink, and club lounge access or complimentary breakfast.

Other perks include an automatic $15 credit for drinks or a snack at Sonesta ES Suites and a 15% discount on dining and resort amenities at Sonesta Hotels and Resorts or Royal Sonesta properties. Elites can also get half-off a paid suite upgrade at check-in.

Include your Travel Pass member ID number and either a photo of a current membership card with another hotel program or a statement showing elite status in the program.

How to earn Sonesta Travel Pass points with a credit card

The Sonesta World Elite Mastercard is an easy way to rack up a lot of points at once. Cardmembers earn:

60,000 points by spending $1,000 on the card in the first three months.

30,000 on your account anniversary if you spend $7,500 on the card in a year.

5,000 points for adding an authorized user in the first 90 days.

3x points on purchases with Sonesta.

2x points on other travel and dining.

1x points on other purchases.

Cardmembers also enjoy automatic elite status and no foreign transaction fees. The annual fee of $75 is waived the first year.

The bottom line

As the Sonesta hotel group grows, the chances you’ll want to stay at a Sonesta property continue to go up. You can join the Sonesta Travel Pass loyalty program before you stay, or sign up at the hotel desk at check-in. Then you’ll enjoy a lot of the loyalty program perks you’ve come to expect from far bigger hotel chains.

  • In 2020, Sonesta dramatically increased the size of its program by converting hundreds of hotels that had belong to the Marriott and IHG program. They also bought the RLH group, which operates 900 hotels primarily under the Red Lion and Knights Inn brands, but these hotels haven't been incorporate into the loyalty program yet.
  • While most Sonesta hotels are on the lower-end or designed for extended stays, the program also has a number of nice resorts and fancy urban hotels.
  • The Sonesta credit card has a solid signup bonus and provides automatic elite status. While you won't get a free night certificate, you'll get something better. If you spend $7,500 during the year, you'll get 30,000 points. Think of it as a more flexible certificate without the 1-year expiration.
  • You can't book Sonesta award nights through the reservation system. If a room is available, you need fill out an online form (or call) to book it with points.
  • Sonesta offers nice benefits at the "Elite" level, including complementary club access (or continental breakfast), heavily discounted suites, and a $15 Sip'n snack credit.
  • You usually don't need the credit card to get elite status, it is easy to get a status match.

Sonesta has recently purchased RLH Hotels, parent of the Hotel RL, Red Lion Hotels, Red Lion Inn and Suites, Signature Inn, GuestHouse, KnightsInn, Americas Best Value Inn, and Canadas Best Value Inn. These hotels have not been integrated into the Sonesta Travel Pass program yet, and it is still unclear whether they will be rebranded or not.

SonestaBrandsRoyal.png

If there are “standard” rooms available, you can always book them with your points . Unlike the other hotel programs, you won't see point costs and can't book awards through the reservation system. If you see a room available, you either fill out an online form or call a customer service representative to book it as an award redemption. You can check the point costs for different hotels on this webpage .

Beyond this, there are two hotels in St. Maarten that require additional points. One is "Tier 10" and requires 40,000 points per night and one is "Tier 11" and requires 50,000 points.

Members earn 10 points per dollar on most stays . Stays at Sonesta Simply Suites only earn 5 points per dollar. There are no bonus points for elite members.

If you pay for your room with the Sonesta Credit Card, you'll earn an additional 3 points per dollar . But you are better off using a card that earns more valuable on travel purchase (unless you are going for the $7,500 bonus). Best Credit Cards for Travel Spending .

The easiest way to earn large amounts of points is by signing up for the Sonesta Credit Card . The normal signup bonus is 60,000 points ($1,000 spending requirement). Every year that you use the card for $7,500 of purchases, you'll earn an extra 30,000 points. If you use the card for exactly $7,500, you'd be earning 5 points per dollar (plus bonus points). Receive Hundreds of Thousands of Points by Signing Up for Credit Cards .

Keeping your Points from Expiring

If you don't earn or redeem points for 24 months, your points can expire . Don't trust their claim that their points "never expire", they are only referring to "active" account. Our Keep Your Points from Expiring article provides more details about strategies for keeping track of upcoming expiration dates and keeping your points alive.

Award nights count towards earning elite status. Like most other programs, you won’t earn credit for nights booked through 3 rd parties like Expedia.

Sonesta will almost always match your status from other hotel programs . Instructions are available in their FAQ .

You also get automatic high-level status, along with a solid signup bonus, from their credit card . Due to the ease of getting a status match, we wouldn't recommend getting their credit card just for its status benefits, but if you have space for another Bank of America card and a semi-regular opportunity to use Sonesta points, it is easily worthwhile.

The Sonesta Credit Card

  • It is worth signing up for this card, just to collect the signup bonus . 65,000 Sonesta points is pretty attractive, but you can only be approved for four Bank of America cards every two years, so make sure to get the Premium Rewards, Alaska Airlines, and maybe the Amtrak cards first.
  • The card provides automatic Elite status . This provides some valuable benefits. On the other hand, it has typically been easy to get matched to Elite status, so you don't really need to get the card for this.
  • Every year you spend $7,500, you'll get 30,000 bonus points . If you decide to keep the card, it is worthwhile to spend enough to get this bonus.
  • Other than earning the annual bonus points, you shouldn't use this card for your spending . Even the points you earn on Sonesta purchases aren't as valuable as what you can earn from a good general-purpose rewards card.

  • Exclusive reservation line
  • Complimentary room upgrades when available
  • Welcome gift

Sonesta Travel Pass Gold is the penultimate step on the elite status ladder. Reaching it requires 20 nights or 20,000 points. Members receive all the benefits of Silver membership, plus the following:

  • 75% tier bonus point multiplier
  • Priority self-parking
  • Complimentary continental breakfast daily for the member (provided as a voucher for up to $15 including tax)

Sonesta Travel Pass Platinum is the program's top-tier status level. Reaching it requires 40 nights or 40,000 points. Members receive all the benefits of Gold membership plus:

  • 100% tier bonus point multiplier.

Interestingly, there is no significant difference between Gold and Platinum in terms of the benefits you receive. The only difference is receiving 30% more bonus points on stays. While this is nice, it does raise a question: Is it worth doubling your investment, in terms of nights and points, to earn an extra 30% bonus points?  Arguably not, and many program users will likely not push past Gold for Platinum status.

Earning Sonesta Travel Pass Points

The number of points you earn depends on the Sonesta property you are staying at:

  • Earn five points per $1 spent on qualifying room revenue at Sonesta Simply Suites hotels.
  • Earn 10 points per $1 spent on qualifying room revenue at all other Sonesta properties.

Qualifying Room Revenue excludes taxes, fees, and other surcharges. It's also possible to earn points on up to two additional rooms outside the room you're staying in, if they're included in your same reservation. There's a maximum of 100,000 points per stay per room.

The earning rates are excellent and make reaching status easy. Considering the status requirements, you only need to spend $2,000 to reach Sonesta Travel Pass Gold. This makes the Sonesta Travel Pass Program one of the easiest to hit elite status using points from stays.

You can also earn Sonesta Travel Pass points from purchases with your Sonesta World Mastercard ® from Bank of America. The card earns points at the following rates.

  • 3X on eligible spend at Sonesta properties.
  • 2X on car rental, airfare, and dining.
  • 1X on other purchases.

The card carries an annual fee of $75 (waived for the first year). While the network of available Sonesta Travel Pass co-branded credit cards is not as well developed as the cards that earn Hilton Honors points or the cards that earn Marriott Bonvoy points , it is still better than nothing.

Sonesta Travel Pass doesn't offer nearly as many promotions as its heavyweight competitors like Marriott and Hilton. However, occasional Sonesta promotions can offer double points, bonus points on every stay, or other offers. It's worth checking the current offers before making a reservation.

Your Sonesta Travel Pass points expire if your account has no activity for 24 months. Sonesta defines activity as earning or redeeming reward points or having a qualifying stay. You'll need to stay at least one night every 24 months to keep your points active.

Sonesta Travel Pass has not switched to dynamic award pricing, unlike many other programs. The program has an award chart, and the points required will vary depending on the hotel tier. Tier one properties will set you back 10,000 points per night, while tier 12 properties will cost you 60,000 points per night.

Although the program has 12 Tiers, most properties are in the lower end or middle of the spectrum. For instance, a quick look at the Sonesta Property Tier list features only two Tier 12 properties:

  • The Benjamin Royal Sonesta New York
  • The Gardens Sonesta ES Suites New York

On the other hand, the list only features four Tier 11 properties. Two are in New York, one is in Washington, D.C., and the Sonesta Ocean Point Resort is in St. Maarten.

What Are Sonesta Travel Pass Points Worth?

To assess the value of your Sonesta Travel Pass points, we looked at a few redemptions across the spectrum of the program's hotel tiers, from 1 to 12. Take the Sonesta Simply Suites Detroit Warren, MI, a Tier 1 property. Typically, an award will set you back 10,000 points, although we found nights for $99 per night in March 2024. This works out at a value of 0.99¢ per point.

Simply Suites Detroit Warren MI room rates through Sonesta Travel Pass

Going to the Tier 4 Sonesta ES Suites Annapolis Hotel will set you back 17,500 points per night. We found nights in March 2024 for $116 per night. That works out at a very poor value of 0.66¢ per point.

ES Suites Annapolis Hotel room rates through Sonesta Travel Pass

Looking at the Tier 8 The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle, things brighten up a little. This will typically set you back 27,500 points per night. We found nights available in March 2024 for $318 per night. This works out at a decent value of 1.16¢ per point.

The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle prices through Sonesta Travel Pass

Heading overseas to the more luxurious end of the Sonesta portfolio, the Tier 11 Sonesta Ocean Point Resort in St. Maarten will set you back 50,000 points per night. We found rooms available in March 2024 for $539 per night. This works out at a value of 1.08¢ per point.

Ocean Point Resort St Maarten room rates through Sonesta Travel Pass

We also looked at one of the two Tier 12 Sonesta properties. The Gardens Sonesta ES Suites New York will set you back 60,000 points per night. Again, we found rooms in March 2024 for $498 per night. This works out at a less-than-stellar 0.83¢ per point.

The Gardens Sonesta ES Suites New York prices

You must be strategic and plan well to get decent value for your points. Judging by the point value spread, it seems you are better off targeting mid- and upper-middle properties to get the biggest bang for your points. The pricing for lower-end and luxury properties does not allow you to generate significant value from your awards.

Although not the biggest or most lucrative program, Sonesta Travel Pass is still a good option for some travelers. The brand has a diverse portfolio of properties across the U.S., giving you plenty of opportunities to book stays, especially if you travel a little off the beaten track.

I am living in Germany. Can I join the Travel Pass?

' data-src=

I don’t see anything in the terms and conditions that would prevent you from joining the Travel Pass program. Even better, you can get 1,000 bonus points for joining! https://www.sonesta.com/join-travel-pass

' data-src=

My introduction was staying at a previous Marriott. In comparison: they did not introduce or push travel pass program. Rooms remained the same in decor. Amenities were sadlly lacking. Towels were poor condition and minimal. Women need a second towel for their hair. Requested more towels and quickly received them – much better quality towels. Room was clean and interactions with staff pleasant. We already booked a multi-family trip without knowledge of rewards program and fear we have missed out. Always believe in a second chance. Hopefully Sonesta rises to the challenge of maintaining the bars of other operators that were before them – I believe that will further that word of mouth and brand loyalty.

' data-src=

I think that the Sonesta hotel chain is one of the best in terms of service. It is good that promotions after the pandemic that I hope ends soon.

' data-src=

It will be interesting to see how Sonesta develops as s chain, but at the moment they have too small a footprint for me to pay much attention to them.

' data-src=

hopefully there will be a chance to test, finally

' data-src=

Will they further enhance their program beyond earning points from and redeeming points on hotel stays?

' data-src=

Are they linked with any of thr frequent flyer programs?

' data-src=

Sonesta brand hotels are my new favorite hotel chain. They recently bought out the local holiday Inn near Disney and its an amazing hotel experience, I highly recommend booking your next stay at a Sonesta hotel.

' data-src=

Have enhancements come with the rebrand?

' data-src=

I have not heard of this hotel brand so really appreciate this writeup. Can’t wait to do research now – to see if I can find one of these hotels on routes I go – so I can try them out and potentially become a member. Earning elite status sounds appealing.

' data-src=

Sonesta is a smaller chain, ive been keeping it on my radar as it grows.

' data-src=

The issue with Sonesta is that they are buying a lot of crappy hotels and rebranding, but not making any changes.

' data-src=

A hotel chain which is expanding is very welcomed. Hope to see more competition.

' data-src=

The growth of the hotel chain is quite significant and with the new loyalty program offering 8,000 bonus points per stay in the USA and Canada this summer it looks like a great opportunity.

I see, the pandemic has brought about the rise of this chain.

' data-src=

It’s a solid enough offer. Discovered Sonesta about 15 years ago in Panamá and Colombia. Really enjoyed the properties. Then the program was useless as points were not awarded at International hotels. It’s a sleeper.

' data-src=

Hotel chains are focused on captured guest again!! Smart movement!!

' data-src=

Great step in the right direction of customer service for Sonesta. Good move there!

' data-src=

I’ve seen a few hotels (former Marriott and IHG) here in Florida and up north in Atlanta which rebranded to Sonesta. I’d heard a tiny bit about the chain some months back here on Awardwallet when they big brands didn’t pay their bills, but now that they’re experiencing high growth, it can’t hurt to join their loyalty program just to put the feather in the cap and keep my options open on future travels.

' data-src=

Sonesta Hotels are fine. Sonesta chain? I wish they were better. What a pain. Be aware if you want to search hotels on their website, you have to price them ONE AT A TIME. You can’t just get all their hotels in an area and prices for dates like every other chain. Phone app? Not yet. Have a lot of points and want to book online? Nope. Fill in a form and submit and hope it is accepted. What? It’s 2021. They added lots of hotels. I have points, I like their hotels in areas I need hotels. But such a pain I think I give up. All other chains make it easy to compare within the chain in an area, and have an app, and let you book online with your points any hour of the day instantly if rooms are available. So FYI before you get as involved with them as I did. I have to imagine this will change. But not so yet. That you are a travel site and you don’t mention these limitations stuns me. Suggests you have never tried to book anything even to see how they work.

Indeed, we haven’t had as much experience with Sonesta as you have! It’s been a very small program, so we are just getting to know it now that it’s expanding. If you want to warn other travelers, feel free to review Sonesta Travel Pass here: https://awardwallet.com/r/Sonesta-Travel-Pass

I completely understand. But you don’t need to spend or book to try their site. Pick a major area. San Jose, CA. SF. Try to price. Of course you would never ever expect that based on other chains and pricing. For using your points I could directly send you images. Can you think of any other chain where you essentially email them to use your points?! If they don’t have an App that’s not a great sign either. Put together? It’s like going back in time (a flip phone and no touch screen might be the analogy). 🙂

I am sure they will get better. Until then I just can’t bother. I had to price two of their hotels for a stay last night, one at a time, and one at a time for my potential dates therefore, and memorize comparisons? Nah. We frequent travelers (I pretty much live in hotels) don’t have the time for drudgery like that. 🙂

That does sound like a really antiquated system! Hopefully Sonesta will step it up now that it’s becoming a bigger player.

It looks like Sonesta lists the hotel prices here: https://www.sonesta.com/travel-pass/hotel-tiers . And wow, San Jose isn’t cheap!

' data-src=

I have never stayed at a Sonesta Hotel. When traveling to a destination I’ll check website for Hyatt, Hilton, and IHG. I would not waste a credit card application for a Sonesta credit card.

' data-src=

One of my previous go-to Candlewood suites has been rebranded as a Sonesta. Since I’m traveling for work these days, I’ve been staying at the Hyatt Place in that area (which is in danger of being re-branded also!) This might be an good time to try out the Sonesta brand.

' data-src=

Wow! That chain is growing very quickly! However, you have to spend a lot to get value out of the program it seems. If you earn 10 points per dollar and the cheapest redemption is 10,000 points, you have to spend $1,000 minimum to have any ability to redeem points for the most basic property.

' data-src=

I just learned about Sonesta… competition is good for the consumer so I’ll take this as a win!! Will have to see how good the value really is.

The world mastercard looks promising.

' data-src=

This is a fascinating evolution. It reminds me of when legacy airlines were in trouble and Southwest swooped in and boomed gobbling up share. It’d be great to see some more chain-sized competition.

' data-src=

I think that’s a great analogy. Sonesta is seizing what they perceive to be an opportunity, when existing players are certainly struggling and desperate to various degrees. The same thing will happen in many industries, producing winners and losers. At some point, hopefully very soon, it will actually be a rather great time to open a restaurant, since the competition herd has been dramatically thinned.

' data-src=

Well, at least the pandemic has created some opportunity for some.

' data-src=

Well its always nice to learn about something new. I guess I will have to look at this growing hotel company. You’re right I have not heard about Sonesta before. I would bet they made sure to hit the big cities? New York, LA, San Fran? Have ya’ll stayed at one?

' data-src=

As others have stated, I have never stayed at a Sonesta property, am troubled by both IHG and Marriott’s having defaulted on their debt service, and think Sonesta needs to offer a more compelling awards plan. Nonetheless, there’s no downside to enrolling, and I appreciate this informative article.

It will be a long road ahead for Sonesta to develop its loyalty program.

' data-src=

Not familiar with the Sonesta brand at all. More importantly to me though, it seems concerning that both IHG and Marriott are defaulting on payments.

' data-src=

Didn’t think we’d see the rise of a new, massive hotel chain in 2020. It’ll be interesting to see if Sonesta decides to really complete with the big players.

' data-src=

I’ve never stayed at a Sonesta hotel. Obviously we know that these hotels are based on their previous IHG levels, but anyone with experience with the company themselves?

' data-src=

Thanks! This overview arrives right on time as I was planning to look into this program after the recent property expansion. Do you know if they ever offer signup bonuses for joining the program? Even a few points would be a nice kickoff.

' data-src=

With that big addition in the US they are really becoming a player. Will certainly be worth a look.

I’m always open to a new hotel program but I don’t see any real benefits to joining the program at this time. It does remind me of the IHG program, and for good reason as a lot of the hotels seem to be previously branded Candlewood Suites and even a Kimpton or two. They need to sweeten the deal to get people to change their stays.

' data-src=

Great to see Sonesta is a growing brand. I’ve enjoyed my experiences there.

' data-src=

This is interesting, I was not previously familiar with Sonesta. I am looking forward to learning more about them this year.

6 reasons you should care about Sonesta Travel Pass

Katie Genter

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Until 2020, I'd never heard of Sonesta or its Travel Pass loyalty program. Granted, Sonesta only had 58 properties at the start of 2020. But over the last six months, Sonesta increased its hotel portfolio by 350% as hundreds of Marriott and IHG properties reflagged to Sonesta . Sonesta will boost its property count to more than 1,200 once several acquisitions are complete.

As I learned of this rapid expansion, I wondered whether I should care about Sonesta and its Sonesta Travel Pass program. So, I took a closer look at the program to see what value I could find. In doing so, I compiled a list of reasons travelers should care about the Sonesta Travel Pass program, as well as several concerns I have about this hotel loyalty program . Today, I'll discuss these reasons and concerns.

Top-tier elite status is easy to obtain and maintain

sonesta travel pass cost

Sonesta Travel Pass has three benefit tiers: Member, Preferred and Elite. The requirements to reach each benefit tier are as follows:

  • Member : Zero to five qualifying nights per calendar year
  • Preferred : Six to 11 qualifying nights per calendar year
  • Elite : 12 or more qualifying nights per calendar year

However, you don't even need to stay 12 qualifying nights to snag top-tier Elite status. After all, cardholders of the Sonesta World Mastercard® get automatic top-tier Elite status for as long as their card is open. And Sonesta offers elite members in other hotel loyalty programs the opportunity to match their status. To request a status match , enroll in Sonesta Travel Pass and then email [email protected] with your Travel Pass Member ID and a copy of a current membership card or statement showing your status in another hotel loyalty program.

The information for the Sonesta World Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Lounge access or breakfast at select brands for top-tier elites

sonesta travel pass cost

When you have elite status and stay on a qualifying rate at Royal Sonesta or Sonesta Hotels & Resorts, you'll get complimentary club lounge access when available. At hotels without club lounges, you'll get complimentary continental breakfast each morning instead.

However, there are many other brands within the Sonesta portfolio. Although Sonesta Select properties often have onsite dining options, elite members won't get complimentary breakfast at these hotels. Meanwhile, Sonesta Simply Suites properties offer simple ensuite kitchens but no onsite restaurant. And all guests get free hot breakfast at Sonesta ES Suites.

However, Sonesta Travel Plan members get a Sip 'n snack credit at Sonesta Select, Sonesta ES Suites and Sonesta Simply Suites when staying on a qualifying rate. In particular, elite status holders get a $15 credit per stay, Preferred status holders get a $10 credit per stay and Member status holders get a $5 credit per stay. So, you may be able to use this credit toward breakfast at these brands.

Elite discounts on dining, resort amenities and suite upgrades at select brands

sonesta travel pass cost

When you have Preferred or elite status and stay on a qualifying rate at Royal Sonesta or Sonesta Hotels & Resorts, you can get discounts on dining and resort amenities. In particular, Preferred members get a 10% discount while Elite members get a 15% discount. But, you'll only get this discount at Sonesta-operated outlets.

Elite members who stay on a qualifying rate at Royal Sonesta or Sonesta Hotels & Resorts can also request a suite upgrade at check-in and get a 50% discount if an upgrade is available. The flip side of this benefit is that you're unlikely to get upgraded to a suite for free , especially since Sonesta only provides Elite members complimentary upgrades to the next room category.

Free night awards range from 10,000 to 50,000 points per night

Sonesta Travel Pass has 11 award night tiers that range from 10,000 to 50,000 points per night. You can see all of the hotels that fall into each tier on Sonesta's website . You can also see the tier and points required for a free night at each Sonesta hotel on a different page . However, you can only redeem points to stay at Sonesta hotels in the U.S., Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and St. Maarten.

The tiers and points costs per night are as follows:

When I look at a new hotel loyalty program, I start by considering low- and high-end redemptions. In doing so, I found that Sonesta only has one Tier 10 property and one Tier 11 property. And, both of these properties are all-inclusive resorts in St. Maarten.

I also found that all Royal Sonesta properties are in Tier 7, 8 or 9. Royal Sonesta properties are the most upscale properties in the Sonesta portfolio. But, since some Royal Sonesta hotels are located in less expensive regions, I expected we'd see some in lower award tiers.

While some Simply Suites properties are priced as high as Tier 7, Tiers 1 and 2 consist solely of Simply Suites properties. Many of the Simply Suites properties were previously Candlewood Suites properties. When staying at a Simply Suites property, you won't get breakfast, but you will get simply-equipped kitchens, free coffee each morning, free on-site laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi.

Two all-inclusive resorts

sonesta travel pass cost

Sonesta has two all-inclusive resorts located side-by-side in St. Maarten. You can book one of these resorts, the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, for 40,000 points per night. This beachfront resort is an av-geek favorite since it's located minutes from Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) and overlooks Maho Bay. The 420-room resort proclaims itself as St. Maarten's largest all-inclusive family resort . Indeed, the resort has an oasis pool with a swim-up bar, kids club, aqua park, teen zone, five restaurants, a pizzeria and five bars.

And you can book the other resort, the adults-only Sonesta Ocean Point Resort, for 50,000 points per night. This 130-room resort offers an all-inclusive luxury experience with three pools, five bars, two restaurants and 24-hour room service.

Currently, both resorts offer paid packages that will likely provide more value than redeeming points. Both resorts also offer on-property rapid antigen testing for guests, although you'll need to pay for this testing.

Ample extended-stay properties

sonesta travel pass cost

Most of Sonesta's hotel portfolio consists of Sonesta ES Suites and Sonesta Simply Suites. Many Sonesta ES Suites were formally either Residence Inn by Marriott or Staybridge Suites. And most Sonesta Simply Suites were formally either Townplace Suites or Candlewood Suites.

Especially when traveling during the coronavirus pandemic, extended-stay properties are appealing for their extra space and kitchens. But even post-pandemic, I expect extended-stay properties to grow in popularity as remote workers look to remain productive while on the road . After traveling for more than three years as a global digital nomad , I certainly appreciate the ample workspace and laundry facilities most extended stay properties provide.

Several of my go-to extended-stay properties in Austin, TX and Birmingham, AL, reflagged from IHG to Sonesta in late 2020. When my travels take me back to these cities, I may give Sonesta a try if I don't find better options in my primary hotel loyalty programs .

Areas for improvement

sonesta travel pass cost

Despite all the reasons I've listed above, I'm still not all that excited about Sonesta Travel Pass. After all, I already have mid- to high-tier elite status with several other hotel loyalty programs. So, unless Sonesta Travel Pass improves in several vital areas, I don't see it being a serious contender to other hotel loyalty programs for my hotel nights.

In particular, I'd like to see Sonesta Travel Pass improve in the following areas:

  • Online award night redemptions : Currently, you must call to redeem or fill out an online redemption request form and then wait for confirmation from the Sonesta Travel Pass team.
  • Consistent elite perks across brands : Many elite perks are only offered at Royal Sonesta or Sonesta Hotels & Resorts. Plus, internet may not be available at international hotels.
  • Better top-tier perks : I'd like to see better perks for top-tier Elite members. For example, Sonesta could offer guaranteed late check-out at a specific time, space-available upgrades at all brands, upgrades to more than just the next level room type when available and complimentary breakfast at all brands that offer breakfast for purchase.
  • Fourth or fifth night free on awards perk : Marriott Bonvoy , Hilton Honors and IHG Rewards all offer a fourth or fifth night free when booking with points , although Hilton's is limited to elites and IHG's is limited to IHG Rewards credit cardholders .
  • Lucrative promotions : Sonesta's current promotions are mostly hotel-specific. Sonesta will need to offer compelling program-wide promotions to attract travelers from other hotel loyalty programs.
  • Large global footprint : Despite Sonesta's massive growth in the last year and upcoming acquisitions, Sonesta still won't have a significant global footprint. And since much of my travel is abroad, I'm not going to put much effort into a program that doesn't provide compelling options overseas.
  • Compelling cobranded credit card : Sonesta and Bank of America offer the Sonesta World Mastercard®. The card's primary highlights are elite status and 30,000 bonus points on each account anniversary if you spent at least $7,500 in purchases during the preceding account year. But, the Sonesta card needs better earning rates (both at Sonesta and on everyday purchases) as well as other appealing perks (like an annual free hotel night ) to justify its $75 annual fee after the first year.
  • Options to boost your points balance : Currently, Sonesta doesn't offer buy-points promotions and isn't a transfer partner of any major transferrable currencies . As such, the only ways to earn Sonesta Travel Pass points are through stays and spending on the Sonesta card.

Some of the above issues are relatively minor. But, some of the problems are difficult to overlook. For example, Sonesta Travel Pass needs to allow its members to book awards seamlessly online. And until earning is improved on the Sonesta card or other ways to boost your points balance are added, it will be difficult for travelers to accrue points.

Bottom line

There are several interesting aspects to the Sonesta Travel Pass hotel loyalty program. From easy-to-obtain top-tier status to all-inclusive resorts , the program has some attractive elements. However, some of the most compelling elite perks are limited to just two of Sonesta's brands. And several other limitations will likely keep me from staying with Sonesta frequently.

But I'll certainly watch Sonesta and its Travel Pass loyalty program as they grow. And, although I don't plan to go out of my way to stay with Sonesta, I expect I'll find that Sonesta hotels are my best option for some stays. I plan to status match to top-tier elite status before my first stay and will be interested to see how the on-site experience is as an Elite member.

The enhancements to the award-winning loyalty program include:

Members will receive exclusive member-only email offers too - but make sure you always opt-in to receive our emails.

No. The name on the reservation must match the name on the Sonesta Travel Pass account in order for stay credit to be awarded, so each person needs to sign up separately. However, you may transfer a free reward night to an immediate family member. Please see  terms & conditions  for full details.

Reward points are earned & redeemed at participating Sonesta hotels in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and St. Maarten.  See where your points can take you . Sonesta Travel Pass members earn ten (10) points for every U.S. dollar, or currency equivalent incurred and paid for by the member on qualifying guest room revenue accommodations except at Sonesta Simply Suites, Americas Best Value Inn, Canadas Best Value Inn, and Signature Inn, where a member will earn five (5) points for every U.S. dollar, or currency equivalent incurred. You can earn a free night in as little as 10,000 points, depending on hotel tier.

You can check your membership status or find out how many points you’ve earned at any time by logging into your  member account . Reward Points will be posted to your account the day after your checkout date.

It’s easier than ever to redeem your points. Simply book directly on Sonesta.com and select “Rewards Points” when completing your reservation. Qualified nights are reservations made at qualifying rates and are used to identify changes in member level and to earn Reward Points. Generally, most rates are qualifying when you book directly on Sonesta.com or through our call center. Members cannot earn credit for day use (same arrival and departure date), some group rates, contract, wholesale rates, as well as 3rd party online travel websites and some other discounts. For all qualifying rate information, please refer to the  terms & conditions .

No. Reservations booked through an online third-party reservation service (i.e. Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Travelocity.com, Orbitz.com, Priceline.com, or Hotwire.com) are not eligible for any Sonesta Travel Pass benefits. Group reservations and any reservation booked through a wholesaler, charter company, or airline contract do not qualify for Sonesta Travel Pass benefits. Voucher, barter, travel industry rates, and award stays are also considered non-qualifying rates. For full qualifying rates details, please visit  terms & conditions .

Yes, sign in to your Sonesta Travel Pass account on Sonesta.com and select the section you would like to update. Changes will be updated immediately. Also, please update your member profile and preferences so we can make your next stay more enjoyable.

Click the  ‘Forgot Password’  link at the bottom of the sign-in page and enter your email address to receive a password reset email.

Membership begins on the day you enroll. However, members may receive credit for stays 30 days prior to enrollment, if requested within 60 days of an  enrollment . You must contact the Travel Pass Customer Care Team at  1.855.622.2160  (toll-free in U.S.) or  1.617.658.0078 .

Login before you make a reservation on Sonesta.com for a participating Sonesta Hotel or Resort, and you will be credited for every qualified stay within 1 week of your departure.

Please contact the Travel Pass Customer Care Team  with the hotel name, confirmation number, your first and last name (as it appears on the reservation), your Sonesta Travel Pass Member ID#, and your arrival date at time of check-in.

It may take up to 1 week after checkout for your stay to post to your account. If your stay still hasn’t posted after a week, please contact the Sonesta Travel Pass support team .

Registered guests with service animals do not follow the same rules and regulations and the Hotel may not charge those guests a pet fee. Domestic pets are welcome at Sonesta hotels. For guests traveling with other animal friends, please contact the individual property for bookings. Pet Policy may vary by location.

Barking and noise that is disruptive to other guests is not allowed. The Hotel will contact the pet’s owner via the cell phone number provided at check-in upon the first complaint about their pet. Upon receipt of two noise or disruptive behavior complaints, the guest may be required to make alternative arrangements for their pet.

Please contact us here .

These things do happen. That's why many of our hotels can provide replacement invoices (or folios) for Travel Pass members. To obtain a copy of your invoice (folio), please contact the hotel directly.

You will need to provide the hotel with a credit card authorization form. To do this, click here and we can have it sent to you.
