The St. Regis Downtown, Dubai hotel review

By Jeremy Lawrence

Infinity pool at The St. Regis Downtown Dubai

Dubai ’s newest St. Regis combines the spirit of its New York sister property with the very best of what the city’s modern financial Downtown district has to offer.

Hotel address:  The St. Regis Downtown, Marasi Drive, Business Bay, Dubai, UAE Website: Booking.com Price from: From £300 a night

Infinity pool at The St. Regis Downtown Dubai

Set the scene

Located on the expansive Dubai Water Canal, the St. Regis Downtown, Dubai is a short walk to the world’s largest shopping mall, the Dubai Mall, and five minutes’ away from the world’s tallest building – Burj Khalifa. We’d expect nothing less in this city . From the lobby’s contemporary artworks and the elegant fabrics of the rooms and suites, to the butler service, infinity swimming pool , and the spoiling Rituals spa, the hotel draws on the brand’s rich heritage while reinterpreting it in a thoroughly modern, Middle Eastern way.

The St. Regis Downtown Dubai

The backstory

Rebranded – and upgraded – from what was the Renaissance Downtown Hotel, and opened in October 2021, the renovation has given the hotel a classically urban St. Regis feel. Happily, it also pays homage to its location on the Water Canal, which feeds into the city’s historic Creek from where a trading network was formed with the outside world in the pre-boom era. This legacy is nodded to throughout the hotel in deft touches. For example, the chandelier in the foyer represents a gold necklace, a head tilt to the heritage of the Gold Souq.

Emiratis have always had a strong connection with the sea – including dhow racing, trading, fishing and pearl diving – and the Arab sailors’ most prized asset was their astrolabe, which they used to measure the location of the moon and stars. This has inspired the layout of the St. Regis Bar , along with accents and accessories made of leather and bronze that pay homage to the legacy of polo and the passion for horses in Emirati culture.

The classic aesthetic of the hotel extends throughout the generous rooms, which each have floor-to-ceiling windows, bathroom products by Remède, a rain shower and a stand-alone bathtub. Depending on which side of the hotel you’re staying on, you’ll either overlook the Dubai Water Canal or Burj Khalifa – two very good options. For those feeling flush and in need of extra space, the 305-sqm Royal Suite has a living room, dining area, kitchen and bar. But even if you can’t stretch to that, all rooms have round-the-clock butler service.

Food and drink

The lively Basta! showcases Italian favourites – from veal Milanese and Roman meatballs to Tuscan bread salad – in a relaxed setting of brick and wood with marble accents, or you can go out on the terrace. The foodie highlight has to be the wood-fired pizzas, however, with bold toppings such as black truffle and farm egg, or veal cotto.

Bleu Blanc, the hotel’s French restaurant , serves seafood and premium cuts of meat prepared at an open grill. Since arriving for the St. Regis launch, renowned head chef Paulo Lostia has raised standards with dishes that pair innovation with tradition. Start with fresh oysters, and try one of the inventive salads such as beetroot, wild chicory, glazed blackberries and goat’s cheese snow. Meanwhile, the wood-fired octopus with potatoes, smoked paprika and chervil vinaigrette is so tender you could slice it with a spoon. Key to the freshness of all the ingredients, we’re told, is its huge range of suppliers. The upscale boho surroundings – including vintage-inspired cutlery and crockery – draw a cool evening crowd.

Just next door, behind a discreet entrance, is the intimate St. Regis Bar, which shakes up bespoke cocktails and infusions. Don’t miss the spectacular mirrored mural depicting the Arabian sky. The hotel also serves a refined afternoon tea – or St. Regis Bloody Mary – at The Library and marks the transition from day to night with Champagne sabering every evening.

Spa beyond suite at The St. Regis Downtown Dubai

The first St. Regis Spa in the Middle East is spread across six ultra-relaxing therapy suites including a Hammam, and signature treatments include a purifying 24 carat gold facial (this is Dubai, remember) along with flotation pod therapy and a traditional Moroccan Hammam. Every spa treatment includes an additional 30-minutes in the en-suite steam room or sauna, during which time you can ponder whether to hit the spacious, light-filled gym after your spa.

Located on Dubai Water Canal in the up-and-coming Business Bay, the location is perfect for accessing the Burj Khalifa, together with the bustle of Downtown and The Dubai Mall. Yet it’s also ideal for quiet evening or morning strolls beside the water, or longer walks down the winding canal path to explore surrounding neighbourhoods.

The service

The legendary St Regis butler service comes as standard, which tells you pretty much all you need to know about the general level of guest service whether you’re in a standard room or the Royal Suite.

For families

The Butler team will prepare a special room-setup with kids bathrobes, slippers and amenities.

Basta!, Bleu Blanc and The Library use compostable straws, cutlery and take-away packaging while the St Regis Bar focuses on zero-waste cocktail creations and has adapted most of its recipes to suit vegans.

Accessibility for those with mobility impairments

All entrances and exits, as well as restaurants and rooms, are accessible for guests with mobility impairments through various elevators, providing the opportunity to experience all areas of the hotel without obstacles. The outdoor terrace at Basta! is accessible via a ramp, while the outdoor pool is equipped with a wheelchair lift to assist guests in and out of the water. Three special rooms, designed for physically disabled guests, have wider corridors, low-level shelves and an open-space shower.

Blue Blanc bar at The St. Regis Downtown Dubai

Anything left to mention?

The St Regis Brunch, Saturdays 1.30pm to 4.30pm, is every bit as lavish as you would expect, taking the best elements from the hotel’s restaurants out to the terrace overlooking the canal. That means live cooking stations serving Italian dishes from Basta!, Mediterranean flavours and the oyster bar from Bleu Blanc, fresh pastries and desserts from The Library, and lots of Bloody Marys and Bubbly Sabrage.

Exclusive first review: The St Regis Dubai, The Palm – Hotel Insider

The newly opened five-star hotel brings a touch of 1920s glamour to the heart of palm jumeirah.

The St Regis brand has returned to Dubai, with the opening of a brand-new property on Palm Jumeirah.

One of Dubai’s most anticipated hotels, The St Regis Dubai, The Palm, is now open for overnight stays for guests who want a little bit of splendour and a taste of the hotel group’s famed hospitality.

Located on the trunk of Dubai’s man-made island, The St Regis Dubai, The Palm, is spread across the first 18 levels of The Palm Tower skyscraper.

The National was invited for an exclusive first media review of the property, and here's what we discovered.

The welcome

The adult infinity pool at The St Regis Dubai, The Palm. The National

The St Regis Dubai, The Palm, is well signposted as you drive on to Palm Jumeirah, and the entrance is located off a slip road in front of Nakheel Mall. Valet staff were quick off the mark to take the car and luggage, and usher us inside where a haven of ivory, gold and marble tranquillity awaits.

A grand staircase spirals down into the lobby – inspired by the staircase from the lobby in the very first St Regis New York, which opened in 1904. In Dubai style, this one is edged in gold and encircles a stunning crystal chandelier, but it's tastefully done. Check-in was smooth and efficient, and after only a few minutes, we were ready to explore.

The neighbourhood

If you’re in Dubai for shopping, then you’d be hard-pressed to find a better hotel. The St Regis Dubai, The Palm, is connected to Nakheel Mall via an internal ramp, and guests can swipe in from the mall using their hotel keycard. It’s also right beside Golden Mile Galleria, and a 10-minute drive from Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Marina Mall.

In the same building, guests can also visit The View at The Palm for lofty vistas of the city, and there is easy access to other Palm Jumeirah attractions including Al Ittihad Park and Club Vista Mare, which is across the road. There's no beach attached to the hotel, however, The St Regis Beach Club is due to open at the end of the year, and guests will have free shuttle services from hotel to shoreline.

The safety measures

Room keys are contactless; simply hover your card near the marker point and push the door open to enter. Each guest is also given a box containing disposable gloves, masks and sanitising wipes.

The hotel is part of Marriott International, so follows the Commitment to Clean programme, which ensures rigorous cleaning protocols using hospital-grade disinfectants, electrostatic sanitising sprayers and air purifying systems.

There are clear social-distancing markers on lifts and hand-sanitising stations in restaurants, the lobby and at entry and exit points. The hotel wasn't crowded during our visit and guests and staff were respecting distancing guidelines and face mask rules.

The hotel has three room categories and we stayed in a Grand Deluxe King Room with a sea view on the 14th floor. Beautifully designed, rooms evoke a sense of calm and reaffirm that you're very much in a St Regis property with gorgeous attention to detail.

A palette of ivory, blush, grey and gold suggests an Art Deco vibe with geometric patterns inlaid in the bathroom floor, wardrobe doors and headboard. There’s an abundance of mirrors – one for getting ready, a full-length, his and hers and even gold-flecked mirrored bathroom doors. The huge soaking tub is surrounded by full-height glass panelling, allowing natural light to flood into the bathroom, but with the option of setting the electronic blinds to go down if you need privacy.

It's intriguing to see Palm Jumeirah from this angle, with the trunk stretching out underneath and the fronds beyond. Rooms don't have balconies so we settled to watch the view from the comfort of a pink chaise lounge.

The service

Staff are pleasant, helpful and give the impression that nothing is too much trouble. All rooms come with butler service – we asked ours to bring us fresh bathrobes and an in-room dining menu. Guests can request a butler's help with for anything else they need or want during their stay.

The staff in Cordelia restaurant were friendly and efficient, and did not hesitate to go and find out about something if they did not have the answer already, which is exactly what you want in a new hotel as staff get up to speed.

By the pool, staff were friendly and service was good with our sun lounger being set up quickly and an ice-filled bucket containing water and refreshing towels delivered to us poolside. But staff having to run between two pools, located on either side of the hotel, meant there was often a bit of a wait when looking to order drinks or the bill.

The St Regis Dubai, The Palm. Courtesy St Regis / Marriott

Suave and sophisticated, The St Regis Dubai, The Palm, is a refreshing addition to Palm Jumeirah's hotel offering. It has two long infinity pools on either side of its central tower, one for families and the other adults-only. It’s a good system as the family pool gets sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon, when the adult pool picks up the rays.

The division also means that if you're trying to have a relaxing staycation, you can do so without the sound of screaming children. Likewise, families can make as much noise as they want without worrying about disturbing other guests.

That said, the family pool wins when it comes to views, with the sea visible in the distance. On the other side, the adult pool overlooks Nakheel Mall's rooftop, residential Palm Jumeirah buildings and a hotel under construction.

Elsewhere, the second floor is home to the Iridium Spa, a definite must-do. We tried the Serenity Massage (Dh650) which uses Amra Iridium hot stones and The St Regis signature body oil. This level is also home to The Exercise Room, equipped with top-range machines and open 24 hours a day.

The soon-to-open St Regis Beach Club will add another element to the hotel, that will definitely be welcomed by those seeking more extensive dining and leisure options.

Grilled king prawns at Cordelia restaurant. The National

When it comes to dining, there’s all-day restaurant Cordelia, Her by Caroline Astor, which is open at lunchtime and for afternoon tea, and Dip Pool Bar, although this currently only has outdoor service available.

The Ritz-Carlton, Fari Islands has opened in the Maldives and offers 100 overwater and shoreline luxury villas. Courtesy Ritz-Carlton / Marriott

Cordelia spans the width of the third floor and has a sophisticated vibe courtesy of 1920s-style decor including curved velvet chairs, geometric panelling, plush sofas and overhead chandeliers.

Breakfast is a served buffet, with additional dishes available a la carte, and lunch is a curated menu with some crowd-pleasing choices.

Dinner at Cordelia was a delight. We started with oyster gratin (Dh89), which had a delicious habanero spice, and paired perfectly with our tuna ceviche (Dh89) from the raw bar. For mains, the wood-fired seafood is delicious. We tried the king prawns (Dh165) and were impressed by the size and grilled flavour, as well as the sizeable sides of lobster mac and cheese (Dh35) and tasty white asparagus (Dh25). We also tried the lamb chops (Dh210), which were perfectly cooked.

Dessert is a chocolate-lovers dream, a creamy 70 per cent Guanaja chocolate paired with refreshing coconut ice cream (Dh60).

Highs and Lows

Unwind with some time out at the spa at The St Regis Dubai, The Palm.

The hotel’s design is a high – every space has been carefully thought out and offers the finesse you’d expect from a St Regis property, but without the stuffiness to make guests feel uneasy if coming from the pool, gym, or the mall next door. The spa-like bathrooms in the guest rooms are another high point, as is the spa itself.

Lows are the fact that there’s no beach, which is undoubtedly one of the joys of staying on Palm Jumeirah. We’d also have loved a balcony to unwind while drinking in the view after a busy day of shopping.

The insider tip

The cigar bar in The St Regis Bar at St. Regis Dubai, The Palm.

Head to The St Regis Bar at sunset any day of your stay to watch the staff masterfully complete a celebratory bottle sabering ritual designed to mark the transition from day to night. We were not informed it was happening, so missed out, but visited the bar later, where the friendly staff gave us a rundown of what we didn't see, plus a tour of the amazing circular cellar and separate cigar room.

The verdict

If you’re a fan of The St Regis brand, you’ll feel right at home in this hotel which ticks all the boxes for service, style and sophistication. It is also a great pick for anyone planning a shopping weekend complete with a post-retail spa pick-me-up. If you’re a fan of Palm Jumeirah for its ocean proximity, then perhaps hang off until The St Regis Beach Club makes its debut.

The bottom line

Check-in is from 3pm, check out at noon and rooms can be cancelled free of charge before 11.59pm on the day before arrival. Overnight stays start from Dh775 ($211) a night, excluding taxes.

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

The St. Regis Downtown Dubai

Situated along the Dubai Water Canal in the Business Bay area, The St. Regis Downtown Dubai promises contemporary luxury with a keen sense of place. As soon as you set foot into the hotel, you’ll discern a tangible sense of Emirati heritage, history and identity infused seamlessly with the brand’s signature style of Old World glamour. Take notice of thoughtful details like the Gold Souk-inspired chain installation in the lobby, art depicting Dubai’s skyline, design touches inspired by desert sands and coral artwork in the rooms.

The hotel’s location makes it an ideal choice for those looking to sightsee and enjoy the city’s various neighborhoods — old and new — within a few minutes’ drive. Dubai Creek’s museums and lively souks are a 14-minute taxi ride, while Dubai Marina’s beaches and waterfront promenade are a 20-minute drive away.

  • With a palette of muted grays, ivory and wood accentuated by blue and gold, the rooms and suites feel warm, inviting and spacious. Comfortable sofas provide a cozy spot to enjoy the brilliant views of the Dubai Water Canal or the Burj Khalifa from floor-to-ceiling windows. Dual vanities, walk-in showers and freestanding bathtubs outfit the marble bathrooms.
  • Every room comes with St. Regis Butler Service, which includes perks such as having a butler unpack and pack your luggage, getting your clothes pressed and any special requests being promptly attended to.
  • Treat yourself to an invigorating treatment from an extensive menu of face and body services and massages at the upscale St. Regis Spa. Restore your glow with the 24-karat age-defying facial that incorporates jasmine and gold. Or experience a thorough cleansing and exfoliating ritual using herbal steam, black soap, clay and body milk during the 60-minute Moroccan hammam.
  • The starlit night skies over the Arabian desert inspired the sophisticated St. Regis Bar’s sparkling, light-embellished ceiling mural. We recommend cocktails such as the watermelon-juice-infused Marasi Mary, a Dubai take on the original bloody mary that was concocted at The St. Regis New York in 1934.
  • The Dubai hotel’s Italian restaurant Basta is lively yet laid back, and serves excellent wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, pasta and steak. When the weather permits, request a seat on the terrace, where the Dubai Water Canal makes for a lovely setting.
  • The outdoor infinity pool offers fantastic views of the Dubai Water Canal and a great spot for a sunset swim.
  • A six-minute drive or a leisurely 20-minute walk through beautiful Downtown Dubai takes you to the Dubai Mall, where you’ll find high-end shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Additionally, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés all within walking distance of the luxury hotel.
  • Sit in the art-dotted Library for a steaming cup of coffee or afternoon tea service.

REVIEW: St Regis Dubai, The Palm hotel – everything on your doorstep

  • 20 April 2024

I had been on a few press trip stays in Dubai at the W Hotel and in Ras Al Khaimah, so I decided to treat myself to a stay at the St Regis, Dubai The Palm for my final night.

In this post:

The hotel is not located on a beach, but you do have access to a beach club. However, I did really like the location, which is near the Fairmont Palm and on the “trunk” of the Palm. It is situated next to the Nakheel Mall which can be accessed via the hotel. It is also by the Nakheel Mall monorail station which connects with the main metro system.

The hotel has two attractions in the same building: the View on the Palm and the Aura Skypool. Suspended 200 metres in the air, the Aura Skypool is the world’s first and highest 360-degree infinity pool. The hotel can arrange tickets for you. Sadly, I had bad visibility and weather on the day I had planned to do these, so I did not get the chance.

You will also be spoilt for choice when dining out as it is next door to the St. Regis Gardens, which houses 6 restaurants in its rooftop location.

This was the second best check-in experience this trip after the Waldorf Astoria. It took a minute or two for a bellman to come to my Uber and retrieve the luggage, but once I had someone’s attention, they were very friendly and helpful. Reception was also extremely charming and could not do enough to help.

St Regis Palm Dubai lobby 2

The outside of the hotel is fairly unremarkable, but the lobby feels luxurious and relaxed.

My room was not ready as I was early, but I was given a key to access the pool area. My room was ready at around the usual check-in time. I was given an upgrade either due to my Marriott Platinum status or booking through my GTC package which also included an upgrade. However, although my original category was a Deluxe Room and the upgrade was into a Grand Deluxe Room, in reality, the rooms are identical, but mine was on a high floor and had a partial sea view.

The bellman was very slow with my luggage, and it took nearly an hour, even after chasing it, although I was assured when I checked in that it would be sent to the room as soon as it was ready. I would expect much better from a St Regis. It was also slow when I checked out.

I liked the style of the room, which I would call “quiet luxury” rather than some of the blingy 5-star hotels you tend to get in Dubai. It felt spacious and well-equipped, as you would expect with a St Regis.

As you walk in, there are two wardrobes and a dressing table area. As regular readers will know, I love a proper dressing table area. I have long hair and appreciate somewhere to sit and dry it. It had two sockets, which was handy. However, like the W Hotel, the sockets were very close to the countertop, which made it tricky to plug in my Dyson Airwrap, but it was just manageable. There were also two storage drawers, which were handy for storing makeup and hair accessories.

The robes were a little disappointing, as they were just basic towelling ones, albeit high-quality Frette cotton.

The bed was heavenly, which I have found at the other St Regis hotels I have stayed at, such as the wonderful one in Venice .

I also liked the desk’s style, which felt much more relaxed than the usual “business” style. The views were excellent, with a clear view of the Burj Al Arab, the downtown skyline, and the sea. It was lovely to sit on the window sofa with a coffee admiring the view.

As you would expect, there was a Nespresso machine and kettle with a small selection of tea. Bottled water was also supplied, but it definitely could have been more generous compared to other hotels as initially, there were only two bottles in the bathroom. Two more bottles were delivered with room service.

The spacious bathroom was the highlight of the room, with its deep soaking tub and plentiful toiletries. You could see into the bedroom but there was an automatic blind if you wanted privacy. It also had a large walk-in shower and separate toilet. I do love a bench seat in the shower, odd though it seems. Perfect for washing your feet or shaving your legs without worrying about slipping.

The toiletries were an odd mix of brands but it made sense as the brands were related to the products. For example, the SachaJuan hair products are from a luxury haircare brand, whereas the shower gel and body lotion are from Sodashi, a clean beauty range of 100% natural body products. I found their fragrance pleasant but quite subtle.

There was a drawer with a few bits and bobs as well, such as a dental kit and cotton buds.

Food and drink

This is served at Cordelia situated alongside the pool. The buffet here was pretty exceptional and on par with the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, which I rate highly.

st regis dubai travel weekly

The restaurant itself did not feel too “canteen” like for a buffet and service was swift and friendly.

As well as the buffet there is an egg menu as well which is included and brought to the table.

The buffet was both extensive and beautifully presented. The patisserie was particularly impressive with a donut wall, croissant flowers, a savoury Danish with cheese and tomato and New York rolls with pistachio. There was also a gluten free are in a separate space.

St Regis Palm Dubai Variety of Desserts 3

There were two salad bars, one with regular vegetables and an Arabic version with dips and cheeses. The charcuterie and cheese selection was high-end, including a wonderful truffled brie, smoked salmon, pastrami, smoked chicken, and fresh burrata.

For hot dishes, there were the usual breakfast favourites, local dishes such as shakshouka, spinach fatayer, and foul mesdames, and global favourites such as dim sum, gyozas, and Indian dishes.

Other restaurants and bars

st regis dubai travel weekly

There are not that many restaurants in the hotel, with just the Rüya restaurant and Cordelia, the breakfast/all-day dining option. Rüya is the fine dining option that serves contemporary Anatolian cuisine.

st regis dubai travel weekly

However, there are lots of restaurants a minute or two away such as those at the St Regis Gardens which is next door.

st regis dubai travel weekly

It is annoying that it carries the St Regis branding but you can’t charge to your room. I ate there at Signor Sassi which I loved. The restaurant serves classic Italian cuisine in an elegant but traditional Italian setting, but it is definitely not cheap, even by Dubai’s standards.

st regis dubai travel weekly

The black truffle pasta was a particular highlight and worth the price for the generous amounts of fresh truffle shaved on top.

st regis dubai travel weekly

If you fancy a drink in the hotel, there is the St Regis bar, which features live jazz, or the pool bar and terrace, which has shisha.

Pool and beach

st regis dubai travel weekly

The pool is on the third floor and was very busy when I was there. I managed to get a lounger, but when I disappeared, I popped into my room. I came back to find someone sitting on my lounger, dripping wet, and had also stolen my towel even though I had personal items on the lounger!

st regis dubai travel weekly

The pool staff will set up a lounger for you, organise your parasol, and bring an ice bucket with water. The food and drink choices by the pool were decent, although a little pricey.

st regis dubai travel weekly

Although the hotel does not have a beach, guests have free access to the Kyma Beach Club. There is an hourly shuttle, or you can walk, as it is about 15 minutes away from the hotel. There is also another pool there, and the Club is adults-only, which I like. You do have to book in advance, though.

The gym is well equipped with modern equipment, including some more unusual machines such as a Summit Trainer, TRX suspension Trainer, and Air Runner.

st regis dubai travel weekly

The Iridium spa offers a good range of treatments, and the staff is lovely. I had credit to spend with my booking (see below), so I decided to go for a treatment since I could not use it at the restaurant I went to. The spa has a sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms. It felt luxurious and tranquil. If you were leaving for a flight, like me, it has everything in the changing rooms to get showered and changed before you go.

St Regis Palm Dubai spa 3

The Relaxation massage was excellent and just what I needed before a long flight.

I booked through our luxury travel agent partners GTC , which cost £412 a night and got the following included in my stay:

  • Complimentary Breakfast
  • USD100 Hotel Credit
  • Room upgrade on arrival
  • Early check-in and Late check-out on request.

You can also book directly with Marriott Bonvoy and use points, which range from 50,000 in low season to 71,000. Cash rates in low season start from £176, and in high season, they start from £350.

You can find more information and pricing for the hotel on the official St Regis Dubai, The Palm website here.

The hotel is ideal for those who want to get out and about with some sightseeing but have a beach and pool available for some downtime as well. The service was very friendly and professional nearly all the time, but the bell service was poor in terms of expedience. The rooms are stylish and well equipped as well as being very comfortable and quiet.
