Top airlines flying from Memphis to Nashville

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Delta did an awful job w logistics at DTW. Missed connection. We were there an hour early. SUCKED

Inflight entertainment stopped working as we taxi to runway and never worked again until landing and taxi to gate. Grrrr

Had to run to make it only to have the flight delayed to wait for all the late connectors Second drink service skipped up

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. Please feel free to contact me directly for more details.

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

3 hour delay was brutal though not Spirit Airlines fault. the control tower would not let us take off because of weather

Beware of all the extras. Nickel and dimed. Everything was extra. It turns a $90 fare in to a $400 fair quite easily.

I flew from Las Vegas to Reno Nevada. Airfare was 60 $ round trip. I needed to bring my skis and boots.that was going to be $111 to bring them. Upon arrival they informed me that anyone who has skis more than 62 inches long is charged an oversize fee of $150 each way. Almost everyone over 5 foot five has skis over 62 inches long. So I paid $60 for the flight and $411 to bring my skis with me! WTF

Didn’t make the connecting flight due to a delay on our first flight.

I like the price. I did not like the seats: very little space and not reclining.

Flights are great except for the ticketing service on the terminal.. Too little employees taking care for lots of flights.

The seats were very uncomfortable. The crew was very polite and helpful.

The airplane was extremely hot the air conditioner wasn’t working I

The text told me it was changed to Terminal E and Gate D5. But with no one on site to ask questions there was confusion on where to go as all the gates were E's. Then we took the skyline to the D area. We left to get something to eat. No announcement was made but my daughter happened to asked and they told her our gate was moved to D12. I will not fly Spirit again.

Seats horrible. No way of getting comfortable . But flight ran smoothly

You can ride in a luxury bus from Nashville to Memphis starting this spring

travel from nashville to memphis

  • The company also offers routes between several Texas cities and from Nashville, TN to Atlanta, GA.
  • Vonlane's growth matches a luxury bus transportation trend taking shape in the United States.

A new transportation option is launching between Nashville and Memphis.

Vonlane , a luxury motor-coach service with routes in the Southern U.S., announced Monday it would offer a new daily route between the two Tennessee cities beginning May 26.

The Texas-based transportation company also operates a route between Nashville and Atlanta in addition to several routes within Texas.

“Our goal is to provide travelers (with) an alternative to the hassle of driving their own vehicle,” founder and CEO Alex Danza said in a news release. “We are pleased to expand our Southeast presence, and we know leisure travelers love the luxurious, first-class travel experience that we offer, and our business travelers know they can work in a quiet, comfortable environment and bill their travel time.”

One-way fare is set at $109 and roundtrip service costs $218. The service offers a leather seat, complimentary Wi-Fi and an on-board attendant offering snacks, meals and beverages.

Growing list of transportation companies offer luxury bus travel

Launched in 2014, Vonlane is one in a growing class of luxury and sleeper coach services making headway in the United States. Bus travel, even luxury offerings, are commonplace in South America and Europe, where brands like RedCoach have been offering services at multiple price points for decades.

In recent years, bus service in the U.S. has gained momentum with more competitors in the market. The Jet offers comfortable business-class service from New York City to Washington, D.C., while Napaway offers an almost daily overnight trip from Washington, D.C. to Nashville.

Each of the fledgling bus companies offers some kind of niche patented perk. Think: motion-canceling technology or custom memory foam mattresses. But almost all of them market to a customer who doesn't want to fly for one reason or another.

“Today, there are zero nonstop flights between Memphis and Nashville, and the shortest connecting flight is more than three hours, plus the time passengers spend waiting at the airport,” Danza said.

“With our service, you arrive 15 minutes before departure, board the coach, put your feet up, pull out your book or laptop, and we are on the way to your destination, and it beats driving your own vehicle and losing productivity sitting behind the wheel in traffic.”

Memphis to Nashville and Atlanta passenger train? Federal funds could be first step

travel from nashville to memphis

The possibility of a passenger railway connecting the Bluff City to the Music City is beginning to track.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, US. Representative Steve Cohen’s (D-TN) office announced that $500,000 in federal funding was secured for analyzing the project scope for a railway connecting Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Atlanta.

“Passenger rail service linking Tennessee’s major cities will be a major economic shot in the arm and will invigorate travel and tourism across our state,” Cohen said in a statement.

The funding is provided via the Federal Railroad Administration (RFA). More specifically, the grand is awarded through the RFA’s Corridor Identification and Development program. The program was created in November 2021 in part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg oversees the program.

“Once this service is in operation, much of the country will be accessible by rail from Memphis. This is a very big deal, and I look forward to working with stakeholders in all the route’s proposed cities to continue to move this project forward,” Cohen said.

Does this mean Memphis will get a passenger rail connecting to Nashville soon?

The short answer is, no. The longer, more accurate answer is, hopefully yes. (Bureaucracy, am I right?)

These funds are the first step in the process. Ultimately, the $500,000 will be used for pre-development planning. The funds will be used to look at the scope of the work and outline a potential pathway towards executing a plan and establishing a new passenger railway between the four aforementioned cities.

"This doesn't happen without all four cities being involved and federal support," Chattanooga director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs Ellis Smith said. "It's about creating connectivity between these four cities."

The four-city loop is called the Sunbelt-Atlantic Connector, according to the application filed.

The city of Chattanooga and mayor Tim Kelley's office helped lead the application process and submitted the Corridor Identification Program application.

This is the first phase of the development. The next part is using the funds to look at how much a railway connecting Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Atlanta will cost. In addition, Smith said part of that initial first step is drafting a right-for-proposal and identifying existing infrastructure, estimating cost, ridership, and potential station locations.

New rail study: Why Tennessee should prioritize Nashville-Atlanta route, establish bus lines

Both state and local governments will continue to be involved in the process and costs for development plans and programs.

"It is a unique partnership because you have all three layers of government working on this," Smith said.

In a letter of support for the application and project funding Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland wrote:

"We anticipate this project to have numerous benefits to our community including linking our nation’s sunbelt and coast with leading air, land, and sea transportation hubs; creating unprecedented opportunities for expanded economic growth and mobility; driving higher workforce participation and equity; advancing our ability to keep our international climate commitments; and create opportunities for tourism and leisure travel for residents across our country."

How does this guarantee a passenger rail is coming to Tennessee?

Again, the short answer is, it doesn’t. This is the beginning stages of a multi-year process and the funding will go a long way towards positioning the Volunteer State in securing a new passenger railway.

Smith said there is federal interest and funding in developing the entire four-city corridor, which bodes well for the future of passenger transit in Tennessee.

In December 2022 , the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) submitted a letter to the RFA expressing interest a passenger rail and confirming a statewide study will be completed by July 2023.

That study resulted in the selection of Memphis, Nashville and Chattanooga as identified corridors — or hubs, really — for future use.

Smith said the federal funding is designed to have railways connecting all four cities. He added, the addition of a passenger train would help both Tennessee residents and visitors move from destination to destination for both leisure and business travel.

"This will be a net economic driver," he said.

What are the possible train routes for Tennessee?

According to the TDOT 2023 Back on Track study , the main line would run between Memphis-Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta. The next goal would be to create a connecting line between Chattanooga to Knoxville to Bristol with the goal to connect Bristol with Virginia and portions of the Northeast Regional passenger rail corridor.

The study identities specific routes and recommends the Nashville to Chattanooga to Atlanta as a first priority.

TDOT tiers for passenger railway recommendations

  • Tier 1: Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta, GA
  • Tier 2: Memphis-Nashville | Chattanooga-Knoxville-Bristol
  • Tier 3: Memphis-Carbondale, IL-Chicago, IL | Nashville-Louisville, KY

In 2022, Amtrak released an updated map for its Connect US initiative , outlining a railway connecting Nashville to Atlanta. The Atlanta line would create a connecting line for the Mid-South to the East Coast and Northeast passenger railways.

Are there any existing commuter trains in Tennessee?

The only commuter line in the state is the WeGo Star which connects Lebanon to Nashville .

Memphis is part of Amtrak’s Chicago to New Orleans passenger railway. In 1979, Amtrak closed its Nashville station .

What is the estimated cost and impact of passenger rails in Tennessee?

The cost is still to be determined. Wednesday’s announcement marks the first phase in planning and Tennesseans can expect update figures on the cost of railway at a later date.

According to the Corridor Identification Program application filed, a 2023 Amtrak analysis of the Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta project would create an estimated 10,684 jobs and an estimated $81.5 million in economic activity over 20 years.

According to the TDOT 2023 study, the estimated economic impact of a Nashville to Atlanta route would create $18.2 billion in total economic output (includes both direct and indirect benefits).

In comparison, states such as Virginia and Pennsylvania have spent billions on similar passenger railways. In 2021, Virginia announced a $3.7 billion plan to separate freight and passenger rails , along with building new tracks. In 2002, Pennsylvania launched its $145.5 million Keystone Corridor Improvement Project, which improved transit for trains commuting between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Similar to Tennessee, the Keystone State has also received Corridor Identification Program funding for a Scranton to New York City line and Philadelphia to Reading railway. An Amtrak study on the northeastern rail expansion estimated that service would not begin until 2028 with an estimated $100 to $175 million needed for track improvements and another $70 to $80 million investment needed for train cars.

Last month, President Joe Biden's administration announced $16.4 billion in funding for 25 passenger rail projects in Amtrak's Northeast Corridor , which runs from Washington D.C. to Boston, Massachusetts. Approximately $66 billion of the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill passed in 2021 will be invested in Amtrak improvements.

While the Tennessee line is still in the early stages of planning, it is likely any new railways will be a blend of new tracks along with modifying existing freight lines for passenger transit.

Spring (late March through mid-June) and autumn (September through November) are the best times of year to go on a river cruise in the US. Spring blossoms add a colorful touch to the shoreline, and you can never go wrong with autumn foliage. The temperatures are mild, if not pleasantly cool, and passengers are eager to welcome a new spring travel season—or to enjoy one last autumn river adventure before winter arrives.

What month is best for a Mississippi River cruise?

If we had to pick just one, September is the best month for a Mississippi River cruise. The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.

What time is the 2024 solar eclipse in Memphis? Search your ZIP code for our guide

travel from nashville to memphis

The Memphis and West Tennessee area will have one of the best views for the April 8 total solar eclipse without being directly in the path of totality.

Most Americans will be able to see it in some form, but the distance between your location and the path of totality will determine how much of the sun will be covered by the moon. Tennessee residents living in the western part of the state will be closest to the path of totality with several communities just being outside of the path, but in the Memphis area viewers will still get a chance to witness a majority of the sun being eclipsed by the moon.

Want to know exactly how much? USA TODAY has put together a database for you to search for your ZIP code below —or select a major city — to reveal the time, duration, peak and percentage of the eclipse in your area.

The shadow of the moon will pass into Texas a little before 1:30 p.m. local time. It will then cover portions of the Midwest and East Coast and touch southeast Canada before it moves out to sea, according to  NASA .

In the Memphis area, viewers can see the partial eclipse starting around 12:38 p.m.

A millennial moved to Charleston from Nashville to get away from the bachelorette-party scene. She says she's never been happier working her new dream job and paddleboarding in her new city.

  • Kaelyn Dannenfelser said she's happier than ever after a job change and a move to Charleston from Nashville.
  • She likes the weather in Charleston but also being close to the water and feeling safe in the city.
  • Charleston has seen a ton of population growth in recent years.

Insider Today

Kaelyn Dannenfelser, 28, says that while she misses her friends in Nashville and loved being able to live there, she's definitely not moving back.

Dannenfelser told Business Insider that Nashville, where she had lived after graduating from college in 2018, could be a good city to live in during your early 20s given it has a lot of young adults, is lively, and can be a fun place.

But she said she was looking forward to finding somewhere to live that didn't have as much party tourism, noting the abundance of bachelorette and bachelor parties in Nashville .

Charleston, South Carolina, which she described as "if a hug was a place," held the answer.

Dannenfelser, who creates content on TikTok and elsewhere as Kaelyn Page, says she has never been happier. That's because of her 2023 move to Charleston and a new job as a product-marketing manager that she described in one TikTok video as a dream.

"I was down in the dumps, and now I'm thriving," she told BI.

Dannenfelser said she loved "to be near the water and near the beach." She lives close to the Wando River.

"I knew that after I visited Charleston , this was the blend of everything that I wanted: a lot of things to do, young professionals, people in their 20s, but more of the outdoorsy activities and people looking forward to doing things other than partying," Dannenfelser said.

She has found that while there are a comparable number of activities as in Nashville, the two cities are different.

Her favorite activities in Charleston involve paddleboarding, such as on Shem Creek or at Sullivan's Island Beach, and enjoying time outside when the weather is nice.

"I love that I can walk out my front door and go to the waterfront and just go on walking trails and see all of the different nature," she said.

She's far from the only one who has moved to Charleston. According to metro-level data from the Census Bureau, Charleston-North Charleston in South Carolina saw net migration — or more people moving in than out — of 16,127 from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, a surge from the 13,016 a year prior or the 9,473 in 2021. Looking more broadly, the population in the South has been booming .

She moved to a short-term rental in August to see how she felt about being in Charleston. She then signed for a long-term apartment rental in September.

Staying in Florida for a few months during the pandemic also had an impact on her move. She said she "got the taste of living by the coast and what really influenced my move to Charleston."

Dannenfelser has found some of the pros in Charleston to be the weather, the Southern hospitality, being in a walkable location, and being in a place with a lot of history.

Related stories

"I think the culinary scene here is just amazing, and it was very similar in Nashville, but there's just a community of people in Charleston too that I think are all eager to make friendships," she said. "There's a bunch of different Charleston girls groups, and I've had a great success at making new friends here."

Given she doesn't really enjoy snow or cold temperatures, Dannenfelser has also found the mild winter a positive. Safety is another pro.

"I feel safe here even at night by myself, which I don't think I could have said that before," Dannenfelser said.

Additionally, her and her boyfriend's rent in the apartment they share with their cats is comparable to her previous rent in Nashville. Based on documentation shared with BI, rent and fees add up to nearly $2,500 a month. Dannenfelser found it was somewhat hard to find a place to live when she was searching given the demand during that time, noting there were some colleges nearby.

"I noticed that the rates in Charleston were actually more expensive then than they are now, and I think it was just from the seasonality of everyone moving here during that time," she said.

For those looking to move to Charleston like her, she suggested spending time researching as there are several islands.

"It can take you a while to get from one place to another just because everything is spread out," she said. "Definitely do your research on the areas and what you want to have the closest access to, whether that's the beach or downtown. That way, you find a place that works best for you."

The main con she has found so far is just that there can be large beach traffic at times given it's a touristy location.

A new job involving work she's passionate about also contributed to feeling happier

Dannenfelser also found a new job , suggesting in a TikTok video that it took months of looking. Documentation shared with BI showed she'd received an offer in August.

She works as a product-marketing manager at LTK , which she described as a creator-guided shopping platform. She said the platform "connects creators, brands, and shoppers." Dannenfelser said she had used LTK as a content creator before getting the job. Given that familiarity and her passion for influencer marketing, she said, "it was the perfect blend of my purpose."

In her previous job in a different industry she didn't have a passion for, she said, she felt she "didn't really have the opportunity to grow," especially given layoff concerns. Dannenfelser said layoffs had "caused frequent stress of job security and also impacted my thoughts of career growth there."

Dannenfelser shared a few tips for anyone seeking a job. She said "don't be shy to be yourself," meaning to show how you can stand out.

"In my prior corporate positions, I was afraid to say, 'Hey, I'm a blogger and I do this, and hey, I like posting TikToks,' and embracing the unique qualities that I had that actually helped me pursue my dream and get me to the current place, which is where I felt I belong," she said.

She said the job hunt could be "very grueling."

"Work as hard as you would for a company on yourself," she said. "You're going to have to work your 9-to-5 job and then spend your evenings constantly applying and reaching out to hiring managers."

Joining groups could also be helpful. She said she joined product-marketing communities. This provided mentorship as well as the opportunity to prepare for interviews with people in the field, she said.

While Dannenfelser hasn't been living in Charleston or in her new role too long, she's feeling much happier so far.

"I look forward to waking up in Charleston and waking up for my job," she said. "My overall happiness has completely skyrocketed."
