Tested: Cadillac’s Next-Gen Super Cruise on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade

By Aaron Bragman

There’s something both marvelous and terrifying about taking your hands off the steering wheel when you’re barreling down a busy highway at 70 mph. It goes against every fiber of one’s being to just let a car steer itself at such speeds after having been taught for decades that you must maintain absolute control, meticulous attention and be ready to react at a moment’s notice to keep yourself and your passengers safe. That’s why Cadillac’s latest and greatest Super Cruise semi-autonomous hands-free driving system, tested in a sparkling white 2021 Escalade Sport Platinum SUV, will likely take some getting used to.

What Is Super Cruise?

GM introduced the system to Cadillac a couple of years ago on the CT6 sedan, a system that combines intricately detailed electronic maps of select American highways with onboard vehicle sensors, GPS receivers, cameras and servos to steer, brake and accelerate without drivers needing to keep their hands on the wheel. Infrared sensors continually monitor the driver to make sure they’re paying attention to the road and surroundings — so there’s no nodding off while the system is activated, no reading a book and no taking your eyes off the road for more than a few seconds. If you do, it’ll yell at you, and if you still don’t pay attention, it’ll shut itself off and bring the car to a halt assuming that something’s happened to you.

cadillac escalade sport platinum 2021 13 front row instrument panel interior mpg jpg

For 2021, GM updated Super Cruise and put it in the redesigned Escalade SUV adding hands-free lane-changing to its list of features. That means if you’re tootling down the highway and come upon some slower traffic in your lane, you can change lanes and accelerate around the slower vehicle by simply pressing the turn signal lever. Enhanced Super Cruise will use the Escalade’s sensors to make sure that the lane is clear (and that nothing is coming up on you quickly), move the vehicle over to the lane and then recenter it at the speed you had originally set. Mercedes-Benz was first to market with a system like this, but unlike the Cadillac system, it required you to have a hand on the wheel to prove you were still present and engaged.

What Does Super Cruise Not Do?

This needs to be said as loudly and as many times as necessary to get the point across to the world: There is no such thing as a self-driving car . No system, anywhere, from any automaker (including Tesla with its questionably branded “ Autopilot ” system) has achieved full autonomy, meaning a car that doesn’t require constant monitoring by a driver. As such, Cadillac Super Cruise only works under very specific conditions, the foremost being “only on roads of which the system has very detailed maps.” This is a significant portion of American major interstate highways, but side roads, boulevards, backroads? No, sir. It’s meant to be a highway cruising tool, not something that will drive you around the neighborhood. As such, it also does not work in construction zones, and there are occasional gaps in the coverage as well. But for most long road trips that involve a significant portion of highway driving, it has you covered.

How Well Does It Work?

cadillac escalade sport platinum 2021 06 cruise control front row interior steering wheel jpg

Astonishingly well. Super Cruise can engage with the push of one button on the steering wheel if the Escalade is on a compatible highway. It will let you know because the upper rim of the steering wheel will light up with green LEDs, and if it’s not engaged but it’s trying to, it’ll light up blue. And if it can’t engage for whatever reason, it will light up in red and instruct you to use cruise control instead.

Once Super Cruise is on and you’re cruising along … well, that’s it. That’s all there is to it. Sit back, put your hands in your lap, listen to a podcast, chat with passengers, but pay attention. There’s no gazing at your phone, no resting your eyes, no reading a book, no looking away from what’s happening in front of you. The system can actually shut off or ask you to take over if it gets into a situation it doesn’t like or enters an area that isn’t covered by the system’s maps. It will also disengage if someone in front of you does something boneheaded and unexpected. The vast majority of the time, the system performed flawlessly for me, cruising along at the speed I’d set. Super Cruise slowed when approaching slower traffic, accelerated when it cleared and even steered itself through tight, fast highway sweepers. It even works on interchanges between highways, but I recommend you adjust speed considerably if you plan on doing that.

I set the system at the start of Interstate 94 West in Port Huron, Mich., and didn’t need to touch the steering wheel until we left the interstate system in Canton, Mich., 80 miles away on the other side of suburban Detroit. Super Cruise piloted my Escalade for over an hour with minimal intervention from me. I instructed it to change lanes when necessary, adjusted its speed on sweeping off-ramps and kept my attention on the other drivers. As the miles rolled on, I found myself more at ease with the system and how it was behaving. It’s remarkably drama free once you come to grips with the idea that this 3-ton luxury barge is charging down the highway at 70 mph with no input from you.

Cadillac Super Cruise Pricing

cadillac escalade sport platinum 2021 03 angle exterior front white jpg

Super Cruise is a $2,500 option on the Escalade Sport Platinum test vehicle I sampled, which might seem like a considerable sum, but it’s a drop in the bucket on that SUV’s $113,065 overall sticker price (including destination). On a long road trip it would be an interesting driving aide.  I won’t necessarily call it something that eases stress or allows you to relax, as you’re still sort of driving the vehicle without actually driving it. I found myself second-guessing what other drivers were about to do, and I still wasn’t entirely comfortable with how the Escalade was being driven — it eased into a bend later than I would have and was just a little too close to that semi in the lane over than I think it should have been. All in all, however, it’s a remarkable achievement and the next logical step on the path toward fully autonomous vehicles sometime this decade.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Super Cruise Review: The Hands-Free Future of Highway Driving

Cadillac’s Super Cruise turns the already excellent Escalade into the standard of the world.

Cadillac Escalade photo

You step up into the 2021 Cadillac Escalade , you get it on the highway, and the Super Cruise light illuminates itself on the dash. You click the button, a strip of light on the steering wheel turns green, and then that's it. For all intents and purposes, you're just a supervisor. Hands are off the wheel, eyes are on the road, away you go down the Interstate.

When this happens, everything changes. Really, you're no longer in a car as you know it. In my case, you're in a big luxurious room on wheels that, for as long are you're on a mapped highway—which was every highway I drove on—you just have to keep looking ahead. You begin to adjust to your surroundings, you get more curious about what's on the radio. A question pops into your head: What do I do now? Besides shut off the heated steering wheel, that is.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Platinum, By the Numbers

  • Base Price (as Tested):  $77,890 ($112,465)
  • Powertrain: 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 | 10-speed automatic transmission | four-wheel drive
  • Horsepower: 420 @ 5,600 RPM
  • Torque: 460 lb-ft @ 4,100 RPM
  • Curb Weight: 5,822 pounds
  • EPA Fuel Economy: 14 mpg city | 19 highway | 16 combined
  • Quick Take: Sell all your shit and buy this thing.

Super Cruising

The 2021 Escalade Platinum is one of the biggest luxury SUVs you can buy and the Lincoln Navigator 's arch-nemesis. It's a seven- or eight-passenger behemoth with a big giant everything and a massive reputation to boot. In its latest iteration, it finally lives up to the hype it's been building for five generations—especially when fitted with Super Cruise, General Motors' $2,500 advanced driver-assistance system. Any trim that has the word "Platinum" in the name gets it as an option, and my loaner was equipped as such. Once Super Cruise turns on, the question of "What do I do now?" is an easy one to answer.

You flick on the heated and cooled massage seats. Whatever music you eventually decide to listen to sounds the best that you've ever heard it because it's being piped out of a 36-speaker AKG system. So it better. You can also—so long as you're attentive—eat, drink, rub your hands together in anticipation like a cartoon villain. Or just relax.

This is all made possible by Super Cruise, Cadillac's hands-free highway driver-assist. As far as I'm concerned, it's truly one of the best driver-assist systems out there. You get on the highway, a light blinks on in the dash, and after the click of a button, you can take your hands off the wheel as the car maintains a set speed, stays in its lane, and changes lanes when you toggle the turn signals. Since GM has mapped pretty much the entire Interstate with LiDAR , you can travel mile after mile without ever touching the steering wheel. Think of it as a really advanced radar cruise control and lane-centering system combined into one.

Cadillac makes it clear that it's absolutely not a self-driving system, which becomes obvious if you try to abuse it. If you take your eyes off the road for more than five seconds, the green light on the steering wheel starts blinking. After that, it's only a few seconds   before the light goes red, the system tells you to regain control, and you have to wait several seconds until it re-enables itself.

It's also careful about where it can be used. For instance, it knew if there was a construction zone ahead. If that was the case, it alerted me to regain control well before I crossed through it. This applied to any parts of the highway it encountered that were unmapped or under construction. It wasn't a common occurrence, but the Escalade always handled it well, letting me re-enable Super Cruise as soon as it was safe to do so.

If you don't regain control when Super Cruise tells you it's going to shut off, the car gradually begins decelerating until it turns on the hazard lights and stops completely. If you're a repeat offender and must re-enable the system multiple times, it will eventually lock you out altogether. A voice tells you that the system is shutting off for good—I imagined it was Mary Barra—and then you must shut off the engine to get Super Cruise back.

message-editor%2F1612486824203-b.jpg

I got locked out once and I didn't let it happen again. Why? Because Super Cruise is not something you're going to want to live without once you've had a taste. It handled every traffic situation I encountered, from twisty dual carriageways like New England's Merrit Parkway to erratic drivers between Boston and Philadelphia. It stayed in the center of its lane, it slowed down for tighter corners, and if other drivers got too close—truck drivers, mostly—it would nudge itself over to make you feel a little better.

It changed lanes smoothly when I asked it to via the blinker stalk, taking a brief moment to make sure the coast was clear and then moving over smoothly and predictably. It would sometimes get confused and hang between two lanes if I didn't hold the stalk down until most of the car was in the other lane, but that was user error more than anything. It was also one of the few things that could be qualified as a "mistake" that Super Cruise ever made while I was using it.

If you find yourself driving long distances consistently, Super Cruise is really a must-have, and if you're curious whether or not your local highways are mapped with LiDAR, Cadillac has a convenient page on its website to tell you . You'll notice if you look at that map that it covers almost every major stretch of Interstate, meaning if you wanted to hop on Interstate 80 in New Jersey and drive all the way to California, hands-free, you could.

Speaking of the Interstate, the longest I spent without touching the wheel of this Escalade was about 150 miles on my way from Philadelphia to Boston. Generally, the only time the system wasn't enabled is when I had to change highways or if there was a construction zone. It was always just a matter of time until it came back online, though.

This system changes the way you think about driving on the highway. It's no longer, "Oh god, I have to spend three hours on the Interstate." It's, "Oh, God, after I spend three hours on the Interstate I'm actually going to have to stop supervising and drive this thing . "

The Good Continues Off the Highway

That's not to say this new Escalade is bad to drive. In fact, if you read my previous review of a non-Super Cruise-equipped Escalade, you'll know it hides at least a portion of its immense weight effectively due to advanced magnetic shocks and adaptive air suspension. Thanks to its 420-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8, it also has plenty of power, and the 10-speed automatic transmission is just as sweet as usual: shifting smoothly, quietly, perfectly. It's good to drive for an SUV, but Super Cruise makes the mundane part of getting from point A to B feel like even more of a chore than it already is. You wish you could turn it on in more circumstances.

message-editor%2F1612486673073-i.jpg

But what really makes all of this work—what makes this new rolling house you're in feel like somewhere you want to spend time—is the interior you get with the top-of-the-range "Platinum" trim. The previous "Premium Luxury" Escalade I had felt solid and luxurious. This Platinum car is over the top. The wood is some of the most ornate and tasteful I've ever seen in a vehicle, every soft-touch plastic surface in the cheaper car is now upholstered in supple white cotton. It's just hard to believe this is based on the Tahoe at all .

Minor Faults

Despite all of this, not a lot of people notice that you're driving an Escalade with no hands. But with a sticker price of $112,465, they should. Cadillac needs to do a bit of a better job marketing Super Cruise when a car is equipped with it. Put a badge on the outside so people know what they're missing when they pass you on the highway. Make the Super Cruise logo something visually interesting, not just a steering wheel, or a boring-looking driver-assist switch. Autonomous driving was just a dream for GM 70 years ago , but behind the wheel of this Escalade, you get the impression that it's finally beginning to be realized. Show us that!

And if I'm going to spend a little time complaining, the only real fault of this truck is its size. It's tough to park by yourself, the automatic parking system doesn't work very well, and it takes up most of its own lane. Super Cruise feels great in something this big because it's so comfortable, but there were multiple instances during my time with the Escalade that I wished I was in something smaller. There is no getting around this thing's sheer physical mass.

The Standard of the World

It's impossible to end on a negative note for this truck, though. I said before not many people realize you're Super Cruising hands-free down the Interstate. But the few who do notice really notice.

message-editor%2F1612486979179-inlineb.jpg

One guy in a Bentley Bentayga on Merrit Parkway did. Midway around a sweeping left turn, his passenger looked over, uttered something to him, and they both took quick glances looking over at me, and then my steering wheel, and then back at me. I looked back and imagined what they were thinking.

It didn't matter they were in a car that, when comparing base prices, cost double what this Escalade does. The badge on the front of his Bentley didn't matter either. At that moment, he was driving, and for all intents and purposes, I wasn't. I was just making sure the car didn't mess up, which it never did.

For $112,465, this Cadillac is worth far more than every penny. But even having said that, I'll be the first to admit that the brand still has work to do in order to fix its reputation. It has spent much of the 2000s—arguably far longer than that—struggling to nail down its identity. "Standard of the World" used to be a complete joke.

In this Escalade, though, it's just not so funny anymore.

The Newest Version of Cadillac’s Super Cruise Is Actually Great

Hands-free driving assistance without the stress.

2022 cadillac escalade

Super Cruise is a fancy brand name for Cadillac’s hands-free driver assistance system. When activated, it’ll control the throttle, brakes, and steering without any input from the driver. And unlike most driver assistance systems I’ve experienced, it’s actually something you’d want to use on a regular basis.

2022 cadillac escalade diesel super cruise

The system has been around for years now. First announced in 2014 and launched in 2017 on the CT6 sedan, it uses pre-scanned LIDAR map data, real-time GPS tracking, and a slew of car-mounted cameras and sensors to operate. Its first iteration worked well, but didn’t stand out as something you’d actually want to use all the time. But this latest update, pushed out in 2020, is a game-changer. Enhancements to the programming mean more natural steering and pedal inputs, while automatic lane-changing means you don’t have to intervene when you come upon a slower car on the road. And activating it is as easy as pushing one button on the steering wheel while cruise control is active.

On the road, it’s uncanny just how well Super Cruise works. It’s not just that it’ll stay between the lines and not hit anything—that’s the bare minimum these days. It’s that the system just seems so natural . It feels like there’s an actual human driving the car, rather than a machine designed to mimic a driver. It’ll speed up and slow down in traffic without being jerky, and lift off through sharper bends so as not to throw occupants about the cabin. With Super Cruise, there isn’t this constant fear that you’re inconveniencing other drivers on the road or getting in their way. It blends in perfectly to the environment in which it’s operating.

2022 cadillac escalade

Most impressive is Super Cruise’s ability to analyze the road situation and change lanes accordingly. The system will speed up or slow down to automatically switch lanes, just like a real driver would. Even if you activate Super Cruise while in the left lane, it’ll eventually make its way to the right lane to let quicker traffic go by. If a particularly strong gust of wind catches the car, it’ll apply corrective steering to bring itself back to the center of the lane. This was especially helpful considering the car used for this test was a 2022 Escalade, a vehicle with the side profile of a building. Super Cruise will even work when it’s raining.

Best of all, Super Cruise lacks the hesitation found in so many other driver assistance systems that make them unbearable to use. It’s refreshing not having to worry about Super Cruise’s every move—it just does what it’s expected to without being intrusive.

2022 cadillac escalade diesel super cruise

You still have to keep your eyes on the road, of course. There are monitoring systems inside the cabin to ensure the driver never stops paying attention to what’s in front of them. If you look down at your phone or stare at your mirrors for too long, the bright green strip of light on the steering wheel will begin to flash to get your attention. Keep your eyes away for too long, and the system will turn off and bring the car safely to a stop. This isn’t a self-driving system —it’s important to make that distinction. On the plus side, Super Cruise can monitor your eyes through sunglasses, so you don’t have to take them off to get the system to work.

Super Cruise is far from perfect, obviously. It stopped working—after sufficient warning—several times while on I-95, a road pre-scanned by the system, citing “no road information.” There were also a couple of instances where it wouldn’t activate because it thought the car was in an exit lane when it was just cruising in the right-most lane. There were a few sections of road I wasn’t totally comfortable letting Super Cruise drive on, like tight construction zones (Cadillac says not to use it here) or Manhattan’s no-runoff, wild-west FDR Drive. It’s not that it wouldn’t navigate through these places, it’s just that the margins are too close to take the risk.

2022 cadillac escalade diesel super cruise

While having the LIDAR data makes Super Cruise work as well as it does, it also limits the system’s use. Cadillac has mapped over 200,000 miles of highway in North America, covering a vast majority of our country’s well-used interstate system. The problem is, there are over 4 million miles of road in the United States. So if you don’t drive on one of those pre-mapped roads, Super Cruise is useless to you.

There’s also the price. Adding Super Cruise to your Cadillac will cost you $2500 upfront, along with an active subscription to keep it working. The first three years are included with the purchase price, but after that, you’ll have to shell out $25 a month, according to Onstar’s website .

the 2022 escalade premium made for a fine test bed to see just how much super cruise has grown

Super Cruise makes the monotonous boredom of highway driving just a bit more relaxing. Sure, you still have to pay attention. But you’re not constantly applying micro-movements to the car to stay in your lane or pass slower traffic. You’re just sitting there, chilling out, listening to your favorite podcast. It’s not a massive improvement, it’s just something that makes the ins and outs of everyday life slightly more bearable.

Whether that’s worth the price of entry and the monthly premium is up to the driver. To me, it only seems worth it if you're commuting on a Super Cruise-mapped road every day. And even then, it’d have to be a long enough drive to keep Super Cruise enabled for more than a few minutes at a time. Otherwise, it just becomes a gimmick to show off to friends and family a few times a year. But as the system gets better, it’ll begin to appeal to more and more people. Seeing how far GM has come so far, we have high hopes for the future of Super Cruise.

The Cadillac Escalade Now Offers Super Cruise. Here’s What You Need to Know

Is Super Cruise the technology of the future…or an impressive party trick en route to it?

unlike other driver assistance systems, super cruise in the 2021 cadillac escalade utilizes two advanced technology systems – a driver attention system and precision lidar map data, to provide added confidence for the driver

Cadillac’s Super Cruise hands-free technology debuted in the short-lived CT6 sedan, which has since shuffled off this mortal coil. For 2021, however, Super Cruise is back — and it’s returning in the all-new Escalade , which is getting an enhanced version.

Super Cruise wasn’t quite ready for prime time when we first reviewed the new luxury SUV’s gas-powered and diesel versions . But now it is, so Cadillac loaned us another Escalade to play around with it for about 24 hours. Here’s what you need to know.

Where does Super Cruise work?

General Motors has added more than 200,000 miles of major highways and trunk roads in North America to the Super Cruise system, mapping them in high-definition so the car knows exactly where it can and can’t go.. The system disengages immediately when you exit the highway. Highway sections are shut down during construction and re-mapped for the system after it.

Is Super Cruise the same as self-driving?

No. Super Cruise is a Level 2 driving assistant. It requires driver attention at all times. Seriously. The system monitors your eyeballs to ensure you’re paying attention. An escalating sequence of alerts starts with flashing lights and ends with cutting torque to the engine and a (purportedly) hair-raising audio alert.

The semiconductor shortage is starting to bite the auto industry

We knew back in January that the semiconductor shortage would be bad for the auto industry — even the humblest car is now a complicated computer — but the gravity is settling here in February. GM has been forced to idle three North American plants ; Ford, in maybe the most glaring sign there’s an issue, is cutting back F-150 production .

How do you turn on Super Cruise?

Very easily. First, you turn on the adaptive cruise control on the steering wheel. If you’re on a road where the system’s functions are available, you can then hit the Super Cruise button. The bar on the steering wheel turns green to let you know you can take your hands off the wheel. You adjust the speed as you would with Adaptive Cruise Control.

Super Cruise is not full-proof

From the driver’s seat, you adjust to Super Cruise after a mile or two, and it’s pleasant. But it wasn’t flawless. In my 90 minutes with it, there was one moment where it took me four attempts to make a lane change. At another point, I grabbed the wheel after the system didn’t respond to a semi-truck that was slowly sliding into my lane. There’s a reason you need to pay attention.

Super Cruise is actually a subscription plan

Super Cruise is a $2,500 option on the new Escalade. That gets you a three-year subscription, which would cover the terms of a 36-month lease. Beyond that term, Cadillac will charge at least a $25 per month connectivity fee for it.

Bold and unapologetic, the Escalade is a luxury and tech powerhouse with massive proportions and a loud exterior design. Poor efficiency is boosted by a diesel option, and it's significantly more comfortable with its new, independent rear suspension.

There is no better road trip vehicle on sale today than a Super Cruise–equipped 2021 Cadillac Escalade . So long as you have the money to put fuel in it, the Escalade will reward you with the most relaxing and comfortable experience in the business.

It’s simple, really. Sitting back and not having to even worry about touching the steering wheel or pedals for hundreds of miles at a time does the trick. Every other driving-assistance system out there requires some degree of steering wheel interaction — even Tesla ’s Autopilot — but Cadillac ’s ingenious driver-monitoring system solves the problem.

You might be wondering why I’m writing a full review dedicated solely to Super Cruise. To answer your question, it’s because GM just rolled out its biggest update to the system ever. I also was planning to drive from Michigan to Buffalo, N.Y., which would put it through a lengthy highway test over a route that is almost entirely Super Cruise compatible — remember, Super Cruise only works on highways that GM has mapped with LiDAR technology.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Sport Platinum

Super Cruise launched in the Cadillac CT6 , a model that is no longer in the Cadillac lineup. This updated, next-gen Super Cruise is rolling out in multiple new Cadillacs, as well as Chevys and soon GMC products , too. Its first home, though, is in the recently redesigned Cadillac Escalade , a perfect product to showcase the system’s impressive abilities.

So, what’s new? The big feature update is something called “Lane Change on Demand.” Just tap a turn signal stalk with the system activated, and the Escalade will change lanes all on its own. A little graphic pops up in the instrument cluster that says the car is “looking to make sure it’s safe.” It then begins to move over. Once it’s done, another graphic informs you that the lane change was successfully completed.

Moving over one lane takes about twice as long as a human driver would, but exercising caution with automation seems like a wise move. Changing lanes mid-curve works just fine on gentle turns. The Escalade will attempt to change lanes on tighter-radius curves, but it took more than 10 seconds to complete the change on a couple occasions, which just doesn’t feel safe or inspire confidence.

I did encounter one big issue with the auto lane-change system, but it was unrelated to the system’s performance. A “check right rear turn lamp” warning popped up about 100 miles into the trip. For the next 30 miles or so, every auto lane change to the right was auto-canceled by this warning. It would go left but not right due to the fault. After a while, the warning went away, and the system worked as normal. Chalk it up to just buggy electronics, as the right turn signal operated problem-free after that.

super cruise on cadillac escalade

Cadillac improved the performance of the system’s radar sensors, too. The Escalade uses long-range radar in the front, short range radar in the front and rear, plus a front camera situated at the top of the windshield that helps determine lane lines. GM’s new electrical architecture made it possible to integrate and take advantage of these better sensors. Additionally, Cadillac gathered “richer map information” to make the car’s movements smoother in all situations.

The result is a stupendously good and reliable driving assistant. Turning the system on is foolproof. You can press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel, then move the car into a proper lane position, and it activates right away. The steering wheel light bar illuminates in blue to tell you it’s searching for the lanes, then switches to green to let you know it’s on. All you need to do from here is keep your eyes on the road. Just like before, both a camera (on the column) and infrared emitters (in the steering wheel light bar) are watching and making sure that your eyes don’t stray elsewhere.

Look away for more than 4 or 5 seconds, and the Escalade will begin to squawk at you. Continue your disobedience for long enough, and it’ll shut down Super Cruise and lock you out as punishment. A simple power cycle is all that’s necessary to bring Super Cruise back after you’ve defied its demands like that.

super cruise on cadillac escalade

My journey to Buffalo saw a few different highways, but mostly I-90. Just as Senior Editor for Green John Beltz Snyder experienced in a 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV , highway interchanges trip it up. Even if getting on a “new” highway only involves staying in your lane, the system will ask you to take control for a moment before letting you reactivate Super Cruise. It’s slightly annoying that the car can’t navigate these occurrences through integration of the in-car’s navigation system, but all that’s necessary is a quick button press, and you’re off again.

I spent hours-long stretches doing nothing but staring ahead, listening to podcasts and getting a massage from the Sport Platinum’s supportive seats. The ride delivered by GM’s incredible magnetic dampers is the pillowy support you want on a long drive. I was truly in road trip heaven.

With these highways mapped, I didn’t have to even think about correcting the car straying from its lane. However, there were a few occasions where I did take back control. The car is able to recognize when you’re in a construction zone, and it warns you upon noticing. Unlike human drivers who can make those small adjustments when one stray cone sits a little further out than others, Super Cruise doesn’t move around within its lane. I nudged the steering wheel every now and then when necessary. The other issue I ran into was lane placement relative to big rigs. Those drivers are not always the most disciplined with their lane keeping, and I had to move the Escalade out of harm’s way a number of times.

super cruise on cadillac escalade

Being able to relax your arms and hands is the biggest reason for the Escalade’s road trip superiority, but there are others, too. The 36-speaker AKG system is audio paradise on wheels. Those headrest speakers might seem sort of gimmicky, too, but they really do add to the listening experience. If you just want quiet, the Escalade is good at shutting the world out, too. A whisper of wind rushing by the mirrors was the only intrusion.

I additionally enjoyed Cadillac’s augmented-reality navigation system that overlays directions onto a live video feed in the instrument cluster. It felt wrong to stare at the screen during an evening rainstorm I drove through, but looking at the display provided significantly better visibility than staring through a rainy and glare-affected windshield. Super Cruise worked without a hitch in the rain, but the real test will be a snowstorm when the radar and camera get covered in salt and road grime.

Fuel economy is the big downside to long road trips in an Escalade, although my test truck with the 6.2-liter V8 managed 20 mpg over the 350-mile road trip both ways (that's what Riswick managed over 900 miles in a Navigator ). The Escalade’s requirement for premium fuel really made my wallet feel the pain, however. We maxed out a fuel pump (it literally cut off at $75, and I needed to insert my card to start back up) — but the relaxation of a Super Cruise-enhanced trip made it hurt less. Forking out the extra $2,500 for the option is worth it on any Cadillac, and the latest improvements make the system even more worthwhile.

I took an 8-hour, hands-free road trip in a Cadillac Escalade. I don't know if I can go back to boring drives in regular cars.

  • I tested out Super Cruise, a hands-free driving system in the Cadillac Escalade.
  • It performed incredibly well, taking the monotony out of hours of highway driving. But it isn't self-driving and needs human supervision.
  • The 2022 Escalade Sport that Cadillac loaned me for the trip came out to roughly $107,000.

Insider Today

There isn't much that the Cadillac Escalade lacks when it comes to comfort.

The hulking luxury SUV is about the size of a New York studio apartment, affording plenty of room for you and up to seven friends to stretch out. It's so ridiculously big that it needs an intercom for the driver to communicate with the third row. Yes, really.

Its interior is overflowing with supple leather and dazzling screens. It glides ever so smoothly over the pavement so as not to jostle its well-heeled occupants.

The only thing that could possibly make the Caddy more pleasant would be if one didn't have to drive it at all. And the Escalade can do that, too. Sort of.

Although no car you can buy today is self-driving, some carmakers offer partially automated systems that can take over certain tasks, like parallel parking or keeping a car in its lane on the highway, all under full human supervision. Tesla's Autopilot is one such feature. General Motors' Super Cruise , which I tested recently in a 2022 Escalade that the company loaned me, is another.

And boy, is it good. So good that it may have spoiled me for boring, regular driving forever.

Super Cruise invites drivers to take their hands off of the steering wheel on approved highways and let the car do most of the work. It functions like a super-smart version of cruise control, using an array of cameras and sensors to slow down and speed up with traffic, smoothly navigate curves, and even automatically change lanes to pass slowpoke drivers.

Related stories

The vehicle ensures drivers pay attention with cameras that monitor their gaze and head positioning. Fall asleep or get distracted for too long, and the system will issue a series of warnings and then shut off.

When I first got behind the wheel of the Escalade, I figured Super Cruise would work fine, but that I'd have to regularly step in to stop it from doing something dumb. It blew away my expectations.

During an eight-hour, 500-mile journey to a friend's house and back, I had my hands on the wheel for about an hour and a half. This was mainly on surface streets near my start and end points, where Super Cruise won't turn on. For hours at a time, the Escalade cruised down the interstate while I supervised, leaving me much less fatigued than I'd normally be after such a long, monotonous drive.

What's great about Super Cruise is that it's simple to switch on and easy to tell when it's active. After turning on cruise control, all you do is press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel. If the car is on a highway GM has mapped out (determined by its GPS position), an LED strip on the steering wheel lights up in green to indicate Super Cruise is working.

Once activated, Super Cruise performed flawlessly for the most part. It kept the Escalade confidently centered in its lane without wavering. Whenever it encountered a slower car, it paused to look for an opening before swiftly passing. If an erratic driver suddenly cut the Escalade off, Super Cruise slowed down to accommodate them.

It accomplished all of this not like some robot, but with much of the smoothness and composure of a human driver. More than once, I got the urge to change lanes and the Escalade preempted me before I had the chance to move a muscle.

It did hit a few snags. Once, it unexpectedly aborted a lane change halfway through the maneuver and swerved back into its original lane. Another time, it slammed the brakes because a car in the next lane veered ever so slightly over the dotted line. Once, it seemed to lose sight of the road when driving directly into the sun and urgently instructed me to take control.

In those moments, I was glad I'd been keeping my fingers near the steering wheel and my foot by the brake.

Overall, Super Cruise did nothing but inspire confidence.

Given our rapidly warming climate , I'm not sure we need to do more to encourage people to drive long distances in gas-guzzling SUVs. But the next time I set off for a long drive in a less-comfy car without Super Cruise, I'll surely be kicking myself for not stealing that Escalade when I had the chance.

Refreshed 2025 Cadillac Escalade Sport Caught Testing Completely Undisguised

Refreshed 2025 Cadillac Escalade Sport Caught Testing Completely Undisguised

A midcycle refresh is just around the corner for the 2025 Cadillac Escalade , promising a host of welcome changes and updates for the luxury marque’s best-selling full-size SUV. Recently, Cadillac Society spotted the high-performance Escalade-V undergoing testing completely uncovered, showing off its revamped front end without any camo. Now, we’ve spied the Escalade Sport trim without camo, giving us a look at what’s coming down the pike for the luxury SUV.

super cruise on cadillac escalade

This 2025 Cadillac Escalade is the Sport trim level, identifiable by its dark exterior accents, such as door handles, grille surround, and daylight window opening (DLO) trim, as opposed to bright accents found on other trims. It’s dressed in Black Raven (paint code GBA), with its refreshed fascia in plain view.

Notably, the front end of the 2025 Escalade was designed to mirror the all-electric Escalade IQ, borrowing the front lighting arrangement from its battery-electric sibling. This includes horizontally oriented turn signals mounted just beneath the seam of the hood, which also double as the hazard lights. Vertical lights extend down either side of the fascia, housing the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) on the outside of the vertical enclosure and the main forward lights inside them. We can also see the two-tiered grille, with the top grille getting a mesh inlay and the lower grille featuring a horizontal slat pattern.

This 2025 Cadillac Escalade rolls on a set of new wheels, and they appear to be a new design of the 24-inch wheels that will be offered as an option right out of the factory. The wheels here feature an attractive double six-spoke pattern that’s quite fitting for the Sport trim.

Moving around the the rear, the 2025 Escalade carries most of the design elements over from the current, pre-refresh model, although the inner taillight graphics have been updated. The 600 badge on the liftgate points to the 6.2L V8 engine (production code L87) under the hood, which is rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

While not visible in these photos, the refreshed 2025 Escalade will incorporate a pillar-to-pillar display similar to that of the all-electric Escalade IQ and Celestiq sedan, a marked upgrade over the current model’s already generous 38-inch OLED display .

The 2025 Cadillac Escalade will continue to ride on the luxury marque’s T1 platform, and production will continue taking place at the Arlington plant in Texas.

I think they ruined the exterior updates! Taillight is a nice touch and the interior is definitely a game Changer. I don’t see myself upgrading from my 23 Escalade but I’m sure folks will like it. I’m definitely curious to see if the interior gained or lost space.

Hennessey’s H850 Cadillac Escalade-V Redefines Super SUVs

This wild Escalade-V from Texas' most famous tuner also delivers 855 lb-ft of torque

  • The tuner has fitted a new supercharger, upgraded the throttle body, and made various other changes.
  • Hennessey also offers the Escalade-V with a 1,005 hp package.
  • A modified Escalade-V can outsprint a Ram 1500 TRX with ease.

The Cadillac Escalade-V is an absolute beast. It is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 churning out 682 hp and 653 lb-ft (885 Nm), figures once reserved for market-leading supercars. Hennessey Performance has now made it even quicker with its H850 package.

To boost the SUV’s performance, the Texas tuner has installed a new air induction system, an upgraded supercharger, high-flow cylinder heads, a custom camshaft, an upgraded throttle body, and fitted both a new intake and exhaust valves. It has then tuned the Escalade-V’s ECU, allowing it to now churn out 850 hp at 6,200 rpm and 855 lb-ft (1,159 Nm) of torque at 4,600 rpm.

Read: Hennessey Takes Cadillac Escalade-V Over The Top With 1,005 HP Tuning Package

Those figures aren’t quite as extreme as those offered up by Hennessey’s flagship upgrade package for the Escalade-V but it’ll be more than enough to scare even the most speed-hungry owners.

Hennessey hasn’t published acceleration and top speed figures for the Escalade-V with its H850 package. What it has done is show it racing a bog-standard Ram 1500 TRX and thanks to its additional grunt, it easily pulls on the almighty pickup truck. That’s impressive considering the TRX can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds and run down the quarter mile in just 12.3 seconds.

Like all of the tuner’s upgrades, its H850 package comes with a 3-year / 36,000-mile limited warranty.

“Extreme-performance SUVs are one of my favorite types of vehicle to drive – their sleeper status is such a great contrast to their supercar-like performance,” John Hennessey said. “Our 850-horsepower version of the Escalade-V brings heaps of performance to this luxury full-size SUV, doing the GM supercharged V8 engine justice. We’re only making 100 of these H850 models, so they’re sure to be exclusive.”

Each H850 from Hennessey will come with a serial-numbered engine plaque and special badging. It can also be optioned with 22-inch gloss black or polished silver wheels. Pricing for the kit hasn’t been disclosed.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
