In Sydney, ringing in the new year is a go-big-or-stay-home affair. But this year, the celebrations will be even bigger, we suspect. We’ve spent a quarter of the year indoors, and if you're anything like us, you've got some catching up to do when it comes to big nights out. So, why not spend your last hoorah of the year in the company of Sydney's greatest icons, the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, on a New Year's cruise?

We’ve curated a list of the best you can book right now to secure the well-earned fun you and your mates deserve. Most of the cruise experiences come inclusive of food and drink, so all you need to worry about is having a damn good time.

Starship Sydney

Behold Australia’s largest glass boat, Starship Sydney. Spend your whole NYE on board, indulging in an all-inclusive evening of canapes, cocktails, Australian beers and premium wines, and three entertainment levels, which includes two decks of DJs. Guests can expect to take up the Azure Deck, which is a private third-level area hosting only 60 people (max comfort guaranteed). A deluxe 5-course seated dinner will be served, with premium beverages available for the entire night, alongside a DJ and dancing—the way we all want to enter the new year, right? Fast Ferry Cruises

NYE doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Which, most of the time it does. If you want to jump on a New Year’s Eve cruise without spending more than a few hundred, choose Fast Ferry Cruises. Starting at $200 per person, these shorter 2.5hr cruises are BYO food and drinks and run for either the 9 pm or midnight fireworks, departing from Manly, Rose Bay, or Darling Harbour.  

Le Bleu 

If you’re an avid fan of electronic dance music and are ready to spend NYE with banging tunes and boogies, you can’t go past a ride on Le Bleu. The night features an exclusive DJ set from BINARY and Alvin Chan and the best possible views of the fireworks, which means you’ll be starting 2022 off with a big bang (and not just ‘cos of the fireworks). There’ll be a Belvedere Vodka on arrival, sushi platters to munch on during the night, and of course a glass of Moet Chandon champagne at midnight. Tickets are $500 plus a small booking fee.  

Bella Vista New Year’s Eve Cruise

Welcome in the new year aboard a luxury glass vessel with 3m high wraparound windows, giving you a prime position for the midnight fireworks. With spacious decks at the front and back and top of the boat, there’ll be plenty of room for all the activities on this all-inclusive 5.5hr cruise. Not to mention delicious canapes, a standing buffet menu and desserts, and a state of the art sound system to have you dancing into 2022. Tickets are $799 per person, but it’s all about the experience this NYE.   

Sydney 2000 Cruise

Looking for a more affordable cruise option but want to stay on the boat for more than a couple of hours? Well then, Rocket Cruise has your NYE sorted. 5.5 hours of relaxed cruising, indoor and outdoor ferry seating, BYO drinks and picnic, and positioned in a viewing area outside of the exclusion zone for the fireworks display. All for $499 per person, departing from King Street Wharf at 7.30 pm and returning at 1 am.  

Aussie Magic New Year’s Eve Cruise

Step into the new year in style on board Aussie Magic, a stylish 26-metre catamaran with a super spacious outdoor entertaining deck. Catch jaw-dropping views of the midnight fireworks after enjoying a night of cocktail style dining—canapes, buffet, free-flowing drinks, which are all included in the $650 per person price. But for 5.5 hours of cruising around the harbour with your nearest and dearest, it’s a big treat yourself kind of night every Sydneysider should experience at least once. Aussie Magic departs from Star City Casino Wharf at 7.30pm and returns around 1am.  

My Way New Year’s Eve Cruise

Revel under the sparkling city lights as the sun goes down and enjoy a picturesque vista of the midnight fireworks from inside the exclusion zone, all the while enjoying the all-inclusive perks of a good NYE cruise: chef’s selection of canapes, buffet menu, music, and more. The two dining rooms are fully air-conditioned too, so the humidity won’t be a problem at all. There’s limited seating aboard My Way – with only 100 seats – so you’ll want to get in quick to secure a spot on a less-crowded cruise.

Tall Ship Dinner Cruise

Most NYE cruises around Sydney are on modernised boats. But why not take a step on the traditional sailing boat side this New Year’s? Choose between three tall ships for an unforgettable dinner cruise on the harbour, all offering front-row views of the fireworks. Dine on fresh seafood, gourmet barbecue, and more, accompanied by bottomless wine, beer, soft drinks, and live music during the 5.5-hour cruise. Prices start at $550 per person, which is a great deal for an all-inclusive NYE cruise.

Vagabond Spirit NYE

Jump aboard one of the newer vessels in Sydney Harbour to celebrate the new year in all-inclusive style. Are you thinking of booking a New Year’s Eve Cruise in Sydney to watch the Sydney Fireworks and not sure where to begin? Well, you aren’t alone! Questions about NYE cruises in Sydney fill travel forums and our inbox every year. Cruises go on sale earlier than all the other NYE events and usually starts filling up mid October. It is recommended to get in early for the best prices and range of options.

I have personally attended the NYE Fireworks show in Sydney over 20 times. I have watched from a boat, the Opera House, The Botanic Gardens, a harbour island and Mrs Macquaries Point. Among my most memorable experiences have been the times out on the water but there is a huge range in quality of NYE Harbour cruises so today I want to share some tips to help you make a good decision.

Top 5 NYE Cruises

Choose an accessible pickup and drop-off spot for your NYE Cruise

The first thing to consider is where you will join the cruise. If it’s departing from an odd location or even one that is hard to get to from home, it becomes more trouble than it’s worth. If you can, choose a wharf that is near public transport, or parking if you have a designated driver. Let’s face it; no one is in the mood to walk kilometres at the end of a long night of partying.

Note: New Year’s Eve sees lots of city streets closed and your usual parking spots or transport routes may not be available, so plan ahead.

A New Year’s Eve cruise in Sydney Is a big-ticket item. These tips on finding a good NYE cruise will help make sure you pick a quality cruise, because when it comes to Sydney Harbour Cruises ON NYE, it’s not always smooth sailing.

Make sure you know who the operator is.

Boats of all sizes are available for charter on Sydney Harbour so it’s important to make sure the operator you pay for your cruise is reputable. There have been occasions in the past when people have handed over large sums on money only to find no boat turns up on NYE.

Check out the company selling the tickets, look at Google reviews, ask in our group or stick to buying from an OTA like Australian owned and operated Travello (our preferred partner), Get your Guide or Viator.

Decide if you want a BYO cruise or a fully catered option?

New Year’s Eve cruises, whether ticketed or through a private charter, fall into one of two categories; Bring Your Own and catered. If your cruise is catered, then make sure you know exactly what is and is not included.

Catered cruises are usually one of three types: canape and finger food, buffet or seated menu. Many operators are happy to work with your specific dietary requirements, so reach out directly and ask if you have any special needs.

Along with the different food menus are different drink options. Some offer regular bars where you buy what you would like to consume. More often though, some sort of drinks package is included. Everything from the premium packages with imported beers and bubbles to the basic local beers, house wine and spirits.

If you choose a chartered boat rather than one of the packages on offer by cruise operators, you are more likely to find they offer a BYO option. The major benefit of this option is that you can take along exactly what you want to drink, and you can save if you are not much of a drinker.

If you go with the BYO option, double check that there are no corkage fees, that you can bring your esky to keep the drinks at perfect temperature or that they have cooling on offer onboard.

Make sure the boat has secured a good position for the fireworks show!

Seems like a simple decision, but it’s not. Many of the less expensive boats don’t exactly have stellar positions assigned to them. If your boat is positioned inside the exclusion zone, you will be in the thick of the action with amazing views.

If your cruise is part of the Harbour of Light Parade, chances are it will have a prime position when the clock strikes 12, but if not, double-check with the operator.

There are two things you should check:

• They assigned larger boats a general vicinity to anchor in for the show. Smaller charters rely on the skill and experience of the captain to find the best spot.
• Also, consider the vessel itself. There is often limited space on the outside decks; some boats don’t even have an outdoor area, so you will watch the fireworks from behind glass. Sure, it might be cheaper, but is this what you want?

How much do new years eve cruises in Sydney cost?

If you want to be on the water under the fireworks, then you are looking at somewhere between $399 and A$1500 per person for a food and drink package.

All the leading tour operators offer cruises on Sydney Harbour on New Year’s Eve with some of the big-name boats charging up to A$1500 per person. For that, you get a 6-hour cruise with a five-course meal and drinks. This is a great way to experience Sydney on NYE if you can afford it. Just do your homework and make sure you chose a vessel that is suited to your musical/food tastes. 20 something’s may not like to listen to a 60’s band all night 😉 just like 50+ might not like 5 hours of dance music. At about 9.20pm after the first round of fireworks, many of the vessels on the water turn on their lights and parade up and down the harbour until the midnight fireworks.

Harbour of Lights Parade

Every year Sydney Harbour is brought to life not just by the fireworks but also by the Harbour of Lights Parade, an annual pilgrimage of boats that make their way down Sydney Harbour. This is a fantastic experience, but whether you are in, it affects where and how soon you anchor. The boats that take part in this parade tend to get the best anchor spots.

There has not been much talk of the Harbour of Lights parade this year. I have not seen a list of confirmed vessels however it will include most of the big operators.

Check with your cruise operator to see if they have any boats taking part in this parade, as I highly recommend it, not just because you get an excellent anchor spot but because it truly is a breathtaking experience.

Another way of ensuring you will have a good vantage point is to choose a boat that advertises they will be positioned in the exclusion zone.

New Year’s Eve Cruise 2023-24

So now on to the boats I would consider if I was buying New Year’s Eve tickets this year.

NYE on a Tall Ship

For a completely different night, spend a night on a boat of a similar size to the ships of the First Fleet.

One company I have cruised with (but not on NYE) and loved is Sydney Harbour Tall Ships. They have two Tall Ships that are positioned in the exclusion zone, meaning you have an excellent view of all the fireworks action. You can see the ships’ locations, in Circular Quay between the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge in the photo below.

The Southern Swan and the Soren Larsen provide a fantastic experience. Plenty of deck space, a great atmosphere with lots of music.

Your ticket includes:

• Delicious canapes & finger food
• All bubbly, wines, beers, soft drinks, juices & water
• A live band playing popular music & requests

The tall ships, however, are sadly not wheelchair accessible, nor are they suitable for younger children.

The Jackson

The newest luxury vessel on Sydney Harbour, the Jackson offers elegant comfort and guarantees a top-notch experience on NYE.

On offer is a 7 course meal, including a 5 course degustation and a midnight supper. The 6.5-Hour All-Inclusive Platinum Beverage Package features free flowing Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label NV, signature cocktails and top shelf spirits, craft beer and a selection of premium wines.

The boat will be positioned inside the exclusion zone for an outstanding view of the fireworks shows at 9pm and midnight. Book now

There will be live entertainment on each of the decks and at Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial Rooftop Bar, a DJ to party the night away.

Starship Sydney

Ring in the New Year on Starship Sydney ! Enjoy all-inclusive food, drinks, and entertainment with a view of the 9pm and midnight fireworks. Dance to the tunes of a well-known Sydney Party Band and DJ.

Starship Sydney features three levels of unobstructed views, two-metre high glass windows, and two open deck areas for a stylish New Year celebration.

This 5-hour cruise which departs from King Street Wharf will feature Canapé and Gourmet Food Stations, a beer and wine package, and is only suitable for adults 18+.

Starship Sydney will have a prime viewing spot for Sydney Harbour NYE fireworks.

Captain Cook Cruises

Captain Cook is one of the most experienced cruise operators on Sydney Harbour with two vessels out this year. This is a lovely way to see in the New Year and any night on Sydney Harbour is a good night in our book.

Where Captain Cook excels is in their food offerings. We have dined on their boats both as a guest and as paying customers in the last couple of years and have been impressed by what they offer.

Here are a few samples from meals we have had on the Sydney 2000 vessel.

NYE Sky Deck Dinner – The top deck of the MV Sydney has 6-course degustation menu paired with Penfold’s premium wines including a 75ml glass of world-famous Penfolds Grange. You will celebrate in style with bottomless Penfolds Rose Champagne (France) & premium spirits and a midnight celebration cocktail.

There will be live music and access to the top roof deck. Tickets are sold out for 2023

NYE Club Deck Dinner – The middle deck on the MV Sydney has a 5-course dinner including canapes at midnight. Bottomless French Champagne and premium drinks included. There are dozens more operators but these are the key companies who have experience and a history of good service. We do not actively recommend other operators as many charter ships for the night so we have no idea who is actually operating the event and if you will get value for money. Hi, I am wondering if there is: 1) Any cruise for NYE that plays more house music not pop hits? 2) Any cruise where no children are allowed? 3) Any cruise where there is an option to pay for “no alcoholic beverages included” please? My hubby and I do not drink alcohol and it seems a waste to pay such money that includes alcohol when we don’t drink

Loved the cruise. Pros: It wasn't crowded; guests were over the age of 18; staff was walking around with wine at all times so we didn't have to go to the bar; passed hors d'oeuvres; tasty food. Cons: a little far from the fireworks, but still a great view; and the bottles of wine could've been opened ahead of time or had some of the wine passed to avoid standing in the line for the first drink. We loved it! Highly recommended.

A wonderful way to see in the new year 19/20. Food and beverages top notch. Staff absolutely delightful. The only grievance was not being able to see the final bit of the fireworks owing to the taller boat ahead of us moving around and at the end totally blocked out the view. We were on a boat 5 years ago and this did not happen then. Otherwise, you give your passengers a fantastic overall new year's eve experience and couldn't be bettered we're sure.

It would have been really good to have someone on deck to inform the passengers of the impending fireworks to build a little bit more of an atmosphere. I cannot express our thanks enough for what a special evening this was. Everything about the night surpassed our expectations - and it was a clear example of 'you get what you pay for'. Yes, it was expensive but as far as we were concerned it was worth every penny. The boat was amazing, the staff were friendly, attentive and accommodating, the food was sublime and the whole experience and view was utterly magical and breathtaking. Amazing job - well done!

We have just returned from our 3 week holiday in Australia and without question the highlight of our trip was spending Hogmanay on board the NYE Blue Room (Glass Boat) Fireworks Cruise. Everything about the evening from start to finish was superb and as tourist who had never been to Australia before I simply cannot imagine a better place to spend the last night of the year. We were in the heart of the celebrations , had a grandstand view of everything and the boat wasn't in the least overcrowded. Your staff were excellent and we had an absolute ball. If any of our friends ever mention that they are going to Sydney for New Year we will tell them that they MUST try to book the Blue Room - we thought it was a bit pricey when we booked it however it worth every penny. A thousand thank you!!

My sister and I had a fantastic time, and it began from the moment we stepped on board and saw how elegant the interior was set up and the presentation of the first flavor’s on the tables. The Pilot gave us a different perspective of outlying areas of the Harbour; it was beautiful. The vantage point selected to view the fireworks was awesome! I expected there to be heavy congestion on the water but that was not the case, it was quite organized. We loved everything about our 2016 New Years Eve dinner cruise. The food was fantastic, entertainment was great, window seats have great views of the harbour and city while we dined. Expensive at just over $1000 AUD per person but thankfully worth every penny. Having dedicated seats for the busiest evening of the year when the city crowds are all vying for space we felt so fortunate to be enjoying a fantastic evening with no hustle and bustle, whilst enjoying champagne and ice wines. Finishing off the evening with some dancing to some pop favorites was the perfect ending to a great night. We had been a bit concerned about other guests being loud & lairy but this was not an issue at all. We chatted to some interesting guests seated nearby, everyone was dressed up making it a fab night!

The staff were phenomenal. So happy and positive and wanting to make our New Year celebration memorable. The food was exceptional. We had three generations of family last night and every one of us had the time of our lives. I chose you because of the glass ‘Clearview’ access to the NYE fireworks as it was the trip of a lifetime but not what I could take our elderly parents outside for if inclement weather. Your table seating ensured a view regardless of the conditions. Entire trip flawless.

Your Sydney Harbour wharf location will differ depending on your NYE boat cruise. Most bigger boats depart from King St Wharf in Darling Harbour, but some pick up from other wharves around Circular Quay or around the Rocks. Please read the cruise description and check your tickets for when to meet your boat and where.

What should I expect on an NYE cruise?

Departing from close to the city, you’ll get to see all the beautiful sights on Sydney Harbour. Your NYE cruises will head past the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge and find an incredible spot to view the 9pm and midnight NYE fireworks from Sydney Harbour.

Most NYE cruises will offer a food and drink package and entertainment like a DJ or band on the boat.

Make sure your camera is ready for that incredible photos, and let the countdown begin!

Will my NYE cruise enter the parade of lights?

On NYE, many boats take part in the parade of lights. These boats are lit up as they make their way around Sydney Harbour leading up to the countdown. When boats enter this parade of lights, they get special access to the exclusion zone.

Boat entries are not determined until two months before NYE. Please ask us if your preferred boat will likely participate in this New Year’s parade of lights for your cruise.

What happens on an NYE cruise in bad weather?

In bad weather, boats will still go out on the Harbour on NYE. Boat cruise cancellations don’t occur in rainy weather unless the weather is deemed unsafe. With many of the NYE cruises, these boats offer ample interior space, so the weather would not affect you.

What’s included in my NYE boat cruise?

The NYE cruise is the best way to experience the Sydney fireworks. The view from the water is incredible and a memory you’ll never forget. For each boat cruise, what comes included will be different. Most NYE boat cruises include food, drinks (beer, wine, sparkling, and soft drinks) and entertainment on the night. You’ll be in prime position to watch the 9 pm and midnight fireworks.

Please read the tour description carefully to ensure what to expect on the water.

Are there bathrooms on my NYE boat cruise?

The boat cruises will have a bathroom on board. Many of the bigger NYE cruise boats offer full bathrooms with stalls similar to a venue on land.

Please remember that these may be marine toilets for boats with bathrooms on board. Only put what comes out of you into the toilet. Ensure you read any instructions in the bathroom for properly operating the restroom or check with the crew on board.

What should I bring on my NYE cruise?

Your boat cruise will be on Sydney Harbour and will typically include all your food and drinks. Dress appropriately for the weather, and please take note of the NYE dress code for your boat cruise. Some boats do have a dress code you would be required to follow. For cooler evenings, make sure you have something warm. Bring comfortable shoes and heels are typically not allowed on the ship for safety reasons and to ensure they don’t damage the floor.

We are a middle aged couple going to Australia for a special holiday.

Do all passengers have access to the top deck to view the fireworks?

Are there any recommendations?

As you note you should find out whether you can get on the top deck for an unobstructed view. Ships/boats with fully open decks are going to be more comfortable for this - some may have seating for say 300 but the top deck was only built for 100 or so. They might allow everyone to cram in but it will be uncomfortable.

Ask if the boat will be in the "parade of lights" and more specifically where will the boat be situated for the midnight fireworks. Most of the cruise boats will be back near Fort Denison and not up close to the Opera House / Circular Quay area. It's still a good view, but even better is inside Sydney Cove / Circular Quay. A few are always here, and a few more get a special pass to be closer in (this may not be known until much later in the year). But worth keeping an eye on.

Also inquire about the expected demographic about the ship - the type of music played can help determine this - so you can possibly avoid the "drink till you drop/really load music party boat" atmosphere (unless that's what you're looking for).

Make sure you check the menu and the type of drinks/etc available - though usually these are pretty generous for NYE cruises given the amount you pay, people can get disappointed if they don't research properly. There are also BYO options which is an interesting idea (haven't been on one myself).

And I would make sure to book with a reputable company that is doing business regularly in Sydney Harbour. Recently one "fly by night" company decided to take everyone's money for a cruise but didn't actually show up on the night, leaving everyone high and dry. Checking reviews and researching the overall business should avoid this outcome.

As I am involved in an organisation that does NYE cruises (not Captain Cook), I need to be careful about recommending any specific companies. But again my biggest recommendations are for a boat or ship with lots of space on an open deck, and/or a boat that's going to be within the Circular Quay/Sydney Cove area for the fireworks.

Good luck with your choice, and again please search the Tripadvisor reviews with "NYE" as you will find lots of specific comments about excellent cruises .

As Mia noted the prices for restaurant packages with the best views will be similar or more expensive than harbour cruises (I'd say starting at $500 pp but often much more than that).

Again please read the FAQ - make sure you secure your accommodation ASAP if you don't have it already - this can be the biggest challenge for NYE in Sydney .

Thanks Jeremy, all advice gratefully received, will keep doing our research & hopefully get what suits our needs.

Just a little side observation and thoughts -

Last year, Sydney was only second to Times Square in NYC for demand and highest rates, averaging AUD$680 (£365) per night - with a minimum stay condition.

We contributed to a recent thread in which someone reported a dire time on NYE aboard the MV Walsh, but it seems a good idea to repeat our experience in a more generic NYE thread. We got what we paid for: a great evening on ship (chartered for Brit cricket tourists by a UK sports travel company) from a reputable Sydney cruise company, Captain Cook. It came to c.A$675 per person and the buffet food was pretty good, although we never expected a gourmet meal!

We were staying at the Hilton on NYE and for some days afterwards (not impressed...) and left plenty of time to walk to Circular Quay , aiming to be there for 6:30. We were wise to leave lots of time as, even that early, the crowds were massive in the area and there was heavy security around the entrance to the piers with people having to produce their tickets for the various ships. Captain Cook did a good job marshalling their various ships into and away from the pier after loading passengers and it was all very well-organised. We were in the "decorated ships" circulation and had a good view of the action from the exclusion zone: amazing numbers of people packing the foreshore vantage points and, to be honest, we wouldn't have fancied waiting for 12+ hours in such crowds (too old for that!). We disembarked around 1am and were surprised that a lot of the crowds had already dispersed: it was a gentle stroll back down George St.

The lesson seems to be to plan well ahead, check precise locations, use reputable companies and not 3rd party agencies that just want to rack up commission, be prepared to pay a considerable amount if you want to have a memorable NYE without tears and ask questions from local DEs. As with most things, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is, so just walk away from it! With the view from their roof, the Holiday Inn Old Sydney (where we are staying now) would have been a great choice: bet they get booked up early for next NYE. It is doubtful whether we will ever be here for another NYE, so we don't regret our significant expenditure one bit (although not quite so sure when the cricket result is factored in): NYE in Sydney should be on everyone's bucket list!
