2024 Car Rental Return (Drop-Off) with FREE Shuttle – Cruise Port Tampa Bay

Introduction

If you are looking to rent a car before your cruise from Port Tampa Bay, which rental car company with a FREE shuttle should you use?

Car Rental Companies with offices near Port Tampa Bay

Unlike Port Canaveral, for example, none of the car rental companies offer a complimentary shuttle to/from Port Tampa Bay. The courtesy rides offered by Enterprise-National-Alamo get overwhelmed by cruise customers and you will do better with a taxi or rideshare service.

WARNING – Another important consideration is the day of the week. Please make sure the Downtown office is open when you want to return or pick up a vehicle!

Enterprise – National – Alamo shares a building across the street from the Amtrak Central Station.

AVIS – Budget shares an office in the Embassy Suites Hotel downtown.

Hertz – desk on the 3rd floor of the Marriott Waterside.

My map below shows the locations and the cruise terminals. If you want to minimize shuttle time then these Downtown locations are the best choice but the Airport is only 25 minutes from the cruise terminals.

To save money on your car rental, always compare the rates when returning a car to the Tampa Airport versus the Downtown location. It may be much cheaper to return the vehicle to the Airport but you must add $30 or so for transportation to the Port.

Hours – Typically Sun 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM; Mon – Fri 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Sat 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Please call to make sure because hours change depending on cruise ship sailings.

After Hours Drop Box – No. This important. You MUST return your rental car during office hours!

Membership – Fastbreak is available but you must identify yourself at the service counter.

Notes – The office is next to Starbucks or in the lobby (due to construction). Drop the vehicle in the parking garage. I recommend the Trolley – the TECO Streetcar is provided free of charge by the city of Tampa. It is about a 4 to 5 min. ride to the Port.

Hours – Typically Sun – CLOSED; Mon – Fri 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Sat 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Please call to make sure because hours change depending on cruise ship sailings.

After Hours Drop Box – Yes. Drop the vehicle with the valet service

Membership – Hertz Gold Plus is available but you must identify yourself at the service counter.

Notes – The office is inside but you drop the vehicle with the valet service outside. I recommend the Trolley – the TECO Streetcar is provided free of charge by the city of Tampa. It is about a 4 to 5 min. ride to the Port.

Location Name – Downtown Tampa N. Nebraska Ave. This is the name to use as a drop-off/pick-up destination. A courtesy vehicle is available for Port service during office hours but it will be slow on cruise days.

Notes – This office is across the street from the AMTRAK train station about 1 mile from the Port.

Renting a car after your cruise

The downtown rental car offices are small with limited availability and I highly recommend booking a vehicle BEFORE the cruise to avoid disappointment. Otherwise, you may have to rent from the Tampa Airport (there are no rental car shuttles to/from Port of Tampa).

A taxi from the Port to the Airport costs around $30. Rideshare can be higher when surge pricing is in effect.

If you have plenty of luggage, I recommend that the driver go and rent the vehicle (from a nearby downtown office) while the family waits at the terminal with the bags. Pickup is easy.

• The downtown offices of HERTZ, AVIS, and BUDGET can be reached for FREE with the TECO Streetcar. Stations are near the cruise terminals as shown on my map above. The distance from the terminals to the rental car offices is just over 1 mile and safe to walk.
• NATIONAL, ALAMO, and ENTERPRISE require a taxi or rideshare unless you call and a courtesy vehicle is available (doubtful on a busy cruise morning). It is safe to walk 0.5 to 1 mile to the office (depending on your terminal) but it may be hot and/or rainy!

A courtesy shuttle van is available to and from THE PORT OF TAMPA BAY. We are located 2 miles from THE PORT OF TAMPA BAY. Customers departing off a cruise must call AFTER going through customs for their pick up instructions. Each cruise terminal has a specific pick up area where our shuttle will meet you.

Accelerated check-in.

You can save time at the counter when you activate Accelerated Check-in online. Just provide your driver's license and contact information that are normally collected at pick-up and we will be ready when you arrive. You'll be on the road and on vacation before you know it!

Self Service Kiosk

Skip the rental counter lines and check-in directly by using Alamo's touch-screen kiosk. Check-in using the kiosk and a receipt-sized rental agreement is printed. You'll be directed to your rental car on the lot. At the exit booth, show the booth agent your rental agreement and driver's license - and simply drive away.

Skip the Counter

No need to visit the counter or kiosk. You can go straight to your car!

In order to take advantage of this optional free service, you'll need to activate Accelerated Check-in online then choose the 'Skip the Counter' option. You will be required to confirm your protection options, agree to the Rental Agreement Terms & Conditions and enter a valid credit card (no charge is made until you return your vehicle). Simply print your rental agreement to bring with you, and you are all set! Go directly to your car, show the booth agent your rental agreement and driver's license - and get on the road!

Rental Policies

Additional driver.

Renter’s spouse or domestic partner who meet the same age and driver’s license requirements of the renter are authorized drivers at no additional charge.  Any additional authorized drivers must appear at time of rental and meet age and driver’s license requirements.  An additional charge of $15 per day for each additional authorized driver will be added to the cost of the rental, unless other contractual conditions apply. 

A spouse or domestic partner is the only permitted additional driver on a rental secured with a debit card.

Corporate Account Verification

This reservation is being made with a Contract ID number (CID) assigned to a Corporate Account for use exclusively by its eligible renters. Use of this CID by individuals other than eligible renters is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action. Renters using this CID may be required to show proof of employment or authorization (such as a business card, current email with company domain, work order, etc.). Questions about acceptable proof of employment or authorization should be directed to your Travel Manager.

Cross Border Policy

Rentals originating in the United States: Most vehicles rented in the US can be driven throughout the US and Canada. Some vehicle classes like Exotics, Large Passenger or Cargo Vans, and other specialty vehicles may not be allowed to travel outside of the US. Vehicles rented in the US cannot be driven into Mexico. 

Damage Waiver

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is not insurance.  The purchase of CDW is optional and not required in order to rent a vehicle.

You may purchase optional CDW for an additional fee.  If you purchase CDW we agree, subject to the actions that invalidate CDW listed on the rental agreement, to contractually waive your responsibility for all or part of the cost of damage to, loss or theft of, the vehicle. DW does not apply to damage occurring in Mexico.

When deciding whether or not to purchase CDW, you may wish to check with your insurance representative or credit card company to determine whether, in the event of damage to, or theft of, vehicle, you have coverage or protection for such damage or theft and the amount of your deductible or out-of-pocket risk.

*For rentals originating in California- CDW ranges between 16.99 USD and 500.00 USD per day depending on the type of vehicle rented.

Extended Protection

For retail rentals only secured with Extended Protection within the cost of the rental (excluding any liability protection or insurance coverage provided under a commercial contract), the following shall apply:

Extended Protection (EP) (Where available): Owner provides Renter or any AAD with third party liability protection in an amount equal to the minimum financial responsibility limits applicable to the vehicle (the Primary Protection). EP also provides additional third party liability protection, through an excess liability policy, with limits of the difference between the Primary Protection and a combined single limit of $1 million per accident for bodily injury and/or property damage to others arising out of the use or operation of the Owner rental vehicle by Renter or an AAD, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. EP includes UM/UIM coverage for bodily injury and property damage (only where required by law for property damage) in an amount equal to the minimum financial responsibility limits applicable to the Vehicle (the Primary Protection), and additional coverage, through an excess liability policy, with limits for the difference between the statutory minimum underlying limits and $100,000 per accident (for rentals commencing in New York, UM/UIM limits are $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident; for rentals commencing in Hawaii, the UM/UIM limits are $1,000,000 combined single limit) or state mandated UM/UIM limit, whichever is greater. OWNER AND RENTER REJECT ANY ADDITIONAL UM/UIM COVERAGE TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. EP, including UM/UIM benefits is provided only when Renter or any AAD are driving the Vehicle. No claim for UM/UIM may be made due to the negligence of the driver of the Vehicle. EP coverage is in effect only while another AAD or Renter is driving the Vehicle within the United States and Canada; coverage does not apply in Mexico.  ADDITIONAL POLICY EXCLUSIONS INCLUDE: (A) BODILY INJURY OR DEATH TO RENTER, ANY AAD, OR TO THE BLOOD RELATIVES OR FAMILY OF RENTER OR AN AAD, IF SUCH RELATIVES OR FAMILY RESIDE IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD WITH RENTER OR WITH AN AAD; (B) PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE RENTAL VEHICLE; (C) FINES, PENALTIES, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (D) BODILY INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTY DAMAGE EXPECTED OR INTENDED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE INSURED; AND (E) ANY OBLIGATION FOR WHICH THE INSURED OR THE INSURED’S INSURER MAY BE HELD LIABLE UNDER ANY WORKER’S COMPENSATION, DISABILITY BENEFITS OR UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION LAW OR ANY SIMILAR LAW. (F) BODILY INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE EXPECTED OR INTENDED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF RENTER OR AADS. Note: Any UM/UIM benefits paid are included in the $1 million combined single limit EP coverage and in no way increase the combined single limit amount referenced above. Refueling Service

As a customer, you have a choice as to how you would like to pay for fuel.

Option 1 -  Prepay Fuel --This option allows the renter to pay for the full tank of gas at the time of rental and return the tank empty. The price is based on an estimate of current fuel prices and the average tank size for the car received. No refunds will be issued for unused gas.

Option 2 -  We Refill. --This option allows the renter to pay Alamo at the end of the rental for gas used but not replaced. Price per gallon will be higher than local fuel prices.

Option 3 -  You Refill. --This option allows the renter to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas to avoid extra fuel charges.

Driver's License Information

Customers who reside in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada

Customers who reside in the U.S., U.S. Territories, or Canada must present a valid, unexpired government-issued Driver’s license which includes a photograph of the customer.  Digital licenses are not accepted.  The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period.

Members of the United States Armed Forces who are on active duty may present an expired home state license under the following conditions:

They also present an Active Military ID, and

They are in compliance with their military extension policy of the state which issued the license.  These policies vary by state and customers are encouraged to check with the appropriate department of motor vehicles for more information.

Customers renting in Florida and presenting a Connecticut or Delaware license: As of July 1, 2023, certain, but not all, licenses issued by the foregoing states are considered invalid under Florida law and will not be accepted.  Please check with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to determine if your license is valid under Florida law.  As of August 14, 2023, information regarding license validity was able to be located at the following webpage on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website - https://www.flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/visiting-florida-faqs/

Customers travelling to the U.S. and Canada from other countries

It is important that customers check with the appropriate Department of Motor Vehicles in the States or Provinces in which they intend to travel to ensure compliance with their various licensing laws. Digital licenses are not accepted. The following practices are used to ensure the customer is presenting a facially valid license at the time of rental. 

Customers traveling to the United States and Canada from another country must present the following:

Their home country driver’s license that is valid, unexpired and includes a photograph, and

If the home country license is in a language other than English (or French, for rentals in Canada) and the letters are English (i.e. German, Spanish, etc.) an International Driver’s Permit is recommended, but not required, for translation purposes in addition to the home country license.  

If the home country license is in a language other than English and the letters are not English (i.e.alphabet is not an extended Latin-based alphabet like German or Spanish but is Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc.) an International Driver’s Permit is required. 

If an International Driver’s permit cannot be obtained in the home country, another professional, type-written translation may be substituted.  In either case the home country license must also be presented.

Customers may not rent a vehicle solely with the International Driver’s Permit.  The International Driver’s Permit is a translation of the individual’s home country license and is not considered a license nor is it considered valid identification.

• In some US locations, customers not holding a US driver’s license may be asked to provide additional documentation.  Examples of this may include a valid passport or, in certain states (AZ, CA, CO, NM, TX) a valid Mexican voter registration card and/or inbound and outbound travel documentation.  
• In some Canadian locations, customers not holding a Canadian driver’s license may be asked to provide additional valid government-issued documentation.  Examples of this may include a valid passport.

Other requirements

Photocopies of Driver’s Licenses are not accepted

“Learner’s Permits” are not accepted.

Any license which, on its face, restricts the licensee to the use and operation of a vehicle equipped with a form of a breathalyzer apparatus is not accepted.

Temporary Driver’s Licenses may be refused if the renting location is unable to otherwise verify the customer’s identity or verify the authenticity of the temporary license.  Additional Government-issued identification may be required.

Personal Effects Coverage

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC) is offered at the time of rental for an additional daily charge. If accepted, the PEC contained in the policy insures the personal effects of the renter, additional drivers or any individual who is traveling with the renter against risks of loss or damage. Benefits are payable in addition to any other insurance coverage the renter or passengers may have. This is a summary only. PEC is subject to the provisions, limitations and exclusions of the PEC policy underwritten by Empire Fire and Marine Insurance Company in the United States. The purchase of PEC is optional and not required to rent a car. The coverage provided by PEC may duplicate the renter's existing coverage. Alamo is not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of the renter's existing coverage; therefore, the renter should examine their personal insurance policies or other sources of coverage that may duplicate the coverage provided by PEC.

RENTER REQUIREMENTS AND FORMS OF PAYMENT POLICIES

RENTER REQUIREMENTS POLICY

All renters and additional drivers must be 21 or older. All renters must have a valid drivers license and a major credit card or debit card in their name. Individuals with learners or instructional permits are not eligible to rent. This is only a summary. For additional details, please reference the Drivers License Information Policy.

The underage surcharge for drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 is $25 per day. Renters between the ages of 21 and 24 may rent the following vehicle classes: Economy through Full Size cars, Cargo and Minivans, and Compact, Small and Standard SUVs with seating up to 5 passengers.

At this location, debit cards are only accepted at the time of rental if accompanied by a ticketed return travel itinerary. The name and address shown on the renters drivers license must match their current home address. Active duty military personnel are exempt from address requirements.

Other than the renters spouse or domestic partner, no other additional drivers are allowed.

If using a debit card for any amounts owed, the available funds in the account associated with Renters debit card will be reduced by those amounts. Additionally, Renter is responsible for any overdraft fees incurred.

INSURANCE VERIFICATION

At the time of rental, Renters without a ticketed return travel itinerary must provide evidence of a transferrable auto collision, comprehensive and liability policy for the following vehicle classes: Full Size Luxury Sedan, Premium Luxury Sedan, Midsize Sport Luxury Sedan, Electric Luxury Sedan, Premium Luxury SUV, Extended Luxury SUV, Electric Luxury SUV, Limo Van, and Corvette.

FORMS OF PAYMENT POLICY

The following forms of payment are accepted for the rental.

American Express

Discover Network

The Estimated Total for the rental on the Review  Reserve screen and/or in the email reservation confirmation will be charged to the form of payment provided by Renter. If the rental as reserved is modified, the estimated total amount for the rental may change and would still be charged to the form of payment provided by Renter.

At the time of the rental, Renter will sign a rental contract (the Contract) which applies to the rental and includes a Rental Agreement Summary and the Additional Terms and Conditions.

DEPOSIT AMOUNT

To account for Renter potentially incurring additional amounts owed under the Contract, renters without a ticketed return travel itinerary will be required to provide a deposit of $300, or $850 for the following vehicles classes: Performance Sport, Full Size Luxury SUV, Electric Luxury SUV, Full Size Elite Electric Sedan, Midsize Sport Luxury Sedan, Full Size Luxury Sedan, Premium Luxury Sedan, Electric Luxury Sedan, Premium Luxury SUV, Extended Luxury SUV, Limo Van, and Corvette.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Debit cards are only accepted at the time of rental if accompanied by a ticketed return travel itinerary.

Renter must use an above listed form of payment for the deposit amount. The deposit amount will not be available for use by Renter and/or refunded to Renter until after the vehicle has been returned.

If Renter incurs additional amounts owed under the Contract, those additional amounts may be deducted from Renters deposit amount, if applicable. If those additional amounts are not deducted from the deposit amount, if applicable, they will be charged to the form of payment provided by Renter at the time of rental unless Renter provides a different above listed form of payment to be charged.

If using a debit card for any of the above amounts, the available funds in the account associated with Renters debit card will be reduced by those amounts. Additionally, Renter is responsible for any overdraft fees incurred.

Money orders and prepaid cards are not acceptable forms of payment at the time of rental, including for the deposit amount, but may be used to pay any amounts due at the end of the rental after the vehicle has been returned. Cash is not accepted.

In addition to one of the above listed forms of payment, credit cards with sufficient available credit which are listed on Renters Profile or Loyalty Account (Emerald Club, E Club, etc.) will be accepted as payment for all amounts owed under the Contract.

All amounts owed by Renter under the Contract will be submitted (a) as an authorization to be a hold against and ultimately charged to Renters credit card or debit card, or (b) to be charged to Renters debit card.

Please read the Renter Requirements policy (see above) for additional details pertaining to the use of debit cards and general rental requirements at this location.

Roadside Assistance PLUS

Renter may purchase Roadside Plus (RSP) from Owner for an additional fee. If Renter purchases RSP, Owner agrees, subject to the actions that invalidate Collision Damage Waiver, to contractually waive Renter’s responsibility for the cost to provide 24/7 roadside assistance (where available) which includes replacement of lost keys (including remote entry devices), flat tire service (if no inflated spare is available, the vehicle will be towed. Cost of a replacement tire is not covered by RSP), lockout service (if the keys are locked inside the vehicle), jumpstarts, and fuel delivery service for up to 3 gallons (or equivalent liters) of fuel if Vehicle is out of fuel. Roadside Plus services are only available in the United States and Canada. If Renter does not purchase RSP, or RSP is invalidated as set forth above, roadside assistance will be available, but standard charges will apply. RSP does not apply in Mexico. For roadside assistance call 1-800-803-4444. In CA, KS, MO, NV and NY, keys are not covered by RSP.

Supplemental Liability Protection

Supplemental Liability Protection (SLP) is offered at the time of rental for an additional daily charge. If accepted, SLP provides the renter and authorized drivers with up to $300,000 combined single limit for third party liability claims. If the renter accepts SLP, Alamo provides third party liability protection up to the applicable minimum financial responsibility limit and Zurich American Insurance Company provides excess third party liability insurance coverage from the applicable minimum financial responsibility limit to $300,000. This is a summary only. SLP is subject to the terms, conditions, provisions, limitations and exclusions in the supplemental rental liability insurance excess policy underwritten by Zurich American Insurance Company. The purchase of SLP is optional and not required to rent a car. The coverage provided by SLP may duplicate the renters existing coverage. Alamo is not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of the renters existing coverage; therefore the renter should examine his or her personal insurance policies or other sources of coverage that may duplicate the coverage provided by SLP.

Toll Pass Policy

Our TollPass Program is our electronic toll collection program which allows our renters to drive through electronic toll lanes and pay tolls electronically, without having to stop and pay cash. In addition, many toll plazas have converted to all electronic tolling and removed the option for travelers to stop and pay cash at toll plazas.

• Exit central Tampa via the FL-618 toll road.
• Use Exit 15A to merge onto I-75 S.
• Stay on this route for around four hours and 278 miles.
• Use the right three lanes to take Exit 19 for I-595 E into Miami.
• Take Exit 8 onto N Orlando Street, using the right two lanes to arrive.

5 Easy Ways to Get to the Tampa Cruise Port (Port Transportation)

If you’re flying into Tampa to take your cruise, you can’t start your vacation without getting to the cruise terminal first! Below we have all the information you need to get to the Tampa port by Uber, Lyft, taxi, or shuttle.

Before getting too far, however, it’s helpful to understand where the Port of Tampa is in relation to the airport and city. The Port of Tampa (lower right) is roughly 10 miles from the Tampa airport and right near downtown:

The port’s official address is 1101 Channelside Drive, Tampa, Florida, 33602 if you wish to map your route using GPS. It’s about 10 miles from Tampa International Airport.

Getting to the the Tampa Cruise Port Without a Car

If you’re flying into the Tampa airport, it’s very easy to get back and forth to the cruise port. In our opinion, the two best options are a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft, or to take a taxi. Both are fairly convenient.

Uber/Lyft (Recommended)

If you are familiar with rideshare companies, then you’ll be happy to know that both Uber and Lyft operate in the Tampa area. If you don’t know these companies, they operate a service where you can request rides around a city from your smartphone. The entire transaction takes place through the phone — from requesting a ride to paying.

Uber/Lyft are a great option whether you are coming from the airport or anywhere else around town as they offer service in Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater, and surrounding areas. Thus, if you are staying in an area hotel or want to explore the city, you can get a ride to spots other than the port.

You’ll likely find that Uber/Lyft also offer cheaper fares than taxis and potentially better service than most taxis. For example, Lyft estimates a ride from the Tampa airport to the cruise port would run $25-30 . Considering taxis charge a $35 flat fee from the airport to the cruise port, rideshare services are a cheaper deal.

That’s why we would have to favor using Uber or Lyft over a taxi if we were needing transportation to the Tampa cruise port. Here are a number of estimated costs from points around the area to the cruise port…

• Orlando International Airport: $100-120
• St. Petersburg: $35-40
• Ybor City: $8-12
• Disney World: $70-80
• Lakeland: $35-45
• Clearwater: $35-42
• Seminole Hard Rock Casino Tampa: $15-20

Of course, while Uber and Lyft have taken a bite out of their business, taxi cabs aren’t extinct. They are also a decent option on getting from the airport to the cruise port, or from other points around town.

The ride is short (less than 10 miles, or about 15-20 minutes) and the fare is very reasonable. Taxicabs leaving the Tampa airport have a set rate of $35 from the airport to the cruise port. Given that several people can ride for this amount, taxis are a reasonably convenient way to get to your cruise.

You can also call a cab from points all around town, such as if you are staying in an area hotel. 

Cruise Line Transfers

The cruise lines will offer transfers from the Tampa airport to the cruise port, however, they can be expensive. For example, Carnival charges $24.99 for each person , one way, for a shuttle between the the airport and cruise port. So a family of four would spend $200 round-trip, just to go about 10 miles each way.

Meanwhile, you are on the shuttle’s schedule, can only go directly from the airport to the cruise port, and it is only available on the day of your cruise. If you come in a day early, you can’t use the cruise line shuttle.

For that reason, we recommend other forms of transportation.

Public Transportation

Want to get to the port without spending a bundle? If you are in the right spot you can get to your ship with public transportation.

Tampa has the TECO Streetcar System . This route offers rides on a retro trolley car, running from Ybor City down Channelside Drive (where the terminals are located) to the edge of downtown Tampa. The great news is that the trolley runs seven days a week from early in the morning until late at night, and it’s free to ride . (There are a number of hotels near trolley stops as well .)

Unfortunately, this is the only route that runs right near the port. You can make connections at the Whiting Street Station from other routes throughout the city to the TECO Streetcar, but we’ll be honest: unless you are familiar with the area or staying directly on the streetcar route, you’ll likely want to just pay for the convenience of getting a ride to the cruise port.

Cruise Hotel Shuttles (Recommended if Staying in the Area)

One way that some hotels in Tampa compete for cruise passenger business is by offering rides to the cruise port.

The premise is simple — book at a hotel with a shuttle (often there is a cruise package you can reserve) and you’ll get your night’s stay plus a ride to the cruise port in the morning.

It makes things very simple and takes the headache out of figuring out transportation on cruise day. Keep in mind that the packages usually cost extra compared to just booking the normal base hotel rate.

Getting from Orlando to the Tampa Cruise Port

It may be that you find cheaper fares into Orlando International Airport, or maybe you want to visit Orlando attractions while you’re in the area. Whatever the case, there are many people who need to get from the Orlando area to the Tampa port.

What most cruise passengers don’t realize is that the two cities are about 90 miles (1.5 hours) apart. For that reason, there aren’t a lot of options to get back and forth.

Uber and Lyft will provide rides for about $100-120 each way.  There are some private car options, but the long drive makes them expensive. As well, taxis will run hundreds of dollars round-trip.

The best option we’ve found is a one-way car rental . We’ve found rates of about $70 one-way (and sometimes cheaper). If you’re needing a ride back, then you’ll need to book round-trip. As well, you will need to pay for cruise parking in Tampa for the rental during your cruise. ( You can search Kayak for car rentals here .)

There are several terminals. When you arrive, you’ll be able to see the ship and just head toward it for drop-off. Tampa doesn’t have too many terminals, so it shouldn’t be difficult.

Is their a shuttle service company that will take you from orlando international airport to the port of tampa and how much and how can I get in touch with them?

Hmm, not that we’ve heard of. We’d suggest getting in touch with companies that offer car service like a limo company in Orlando. Often they have other cars (not just limos) and will take you anywhere you want to go.

We use to take Supershuttle to the cruise port and TPA for a low price but we just got notice that they are going out of business at the end of the year December 31st, 2019. We are going on a cruise out of Port of Tampa on Jan 6th, 2020. I guess we will have to use Lyft or Uber now as it doesn’t look like any company decided to take over in the Tampa area where Supershuttle used to service.

Uber and Lyft are pretty easy to use and shouldn’t be that expensive.

We are flying into Tampa and cruising out of Tampa. We are arriving the day before our cruise but will be on a flight that’s coming in real late on a Friday night. What’s our best means of transportation to get to a hotel. Hoping to stay in one near the port.

We don’t know anything specific about that company, but a taxi from the airport to the cruise port is perfectly fine. In fact, there is likely no need to pre-arrange. Just go tot the taxi line and let them know you want to go to the port when you arrive. Should be a flat fee of $28. Uber/Lyft might be a little cheaper, but it won’t be much.

There are four of us going on a cruise from Port of Tampa. Because of the flat-fee taxi service, is it cheaper to take a taxi? I have used both Uber and Lyft, but it’s usually by myself or with one other person, so I don’t know if they charge per mile, per person, or flat rate.

The taxi runs $28 flat fee. Lyft estimates it to be about $20. With Uber and Lyft you are paying per car, not per person. So they are about the same, with a cab being slightly more. However, it’s not a big difference.

I have my family of 7 going on a cruise in March is better to Uber between two cars or arrange transportation for all 7 of us together to get to the port from the airport.

That’s a tough one. You might try a shuttle service that lets you rent a van to see what the cost would be. Otherwise, two Uber cars won’t be too expensive.

Ride cheap but tip good because we are not slave.We drive for those companies because we are unemployed and need to pay our bills or we get homeless.

It really depends, but usually they are around the same. Sometimes they run specials, discount the rates, offer sign-up bonuses for new customers, etc. Whatever the difference, it won’t be dramatic.

We are looking to get 24 people from Zephyrhills to the port of Tampa: any bus companies you would suggest?

Linda, since we’ve never personally used any of the bus services, we can’t recommend anyone specific. However, with that many people, you should be able to get a decent deal on a per person basis. Enjoy your cruise!

We are coming off a cruise at Fort Lauderdale port and need to join another cruise at the Tampa Port on the same day. Please let us know the most cost efficient way to get there.

That’s a tough one. The ports are about 250 miles apart (4 hours). We’d suggest getting in touch with a private car service to see what they would charge. You could also see about one-way car rentals from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa.

- Are the shuttles slow to leave port?

Enterprise has a location on Kennedy Blvd which is near the port. They always advertise that they will pick you up:

On Monday morning you'll be going opposite to the traffic coming into Tampa once you make your way out to I-4. You should get to the Universal area within 2 hours.

We are taking a cruise out of Tampa early January. We found our most direct and least expensive option to Florida was to fly direct to Orlando, stay one night and then drive to Tampa next morning. That is all booked. However, now we have a problem. All the car rental sites seem to only allow us to select a drop off at Tampa airport. I was wondering if people know of a rental company operating out of, or near, Tampa cruise port. I realise that we could get to Tampa airport and taxi in but it looks like that option is quite slow and costly. Thanks for any suggestions.

Actually a taxi from TPA to the port takes about 15 minutes and costs only $25+tip

A couple of long blocks from the port are both a Hertz and Avis office - these are located in large hotels; also there is an Enterprise office within a couple of miles (look for a Channel side or Ybor City location). You might pay a higher rate to use these offices compared to the TPA airport locations - price it out.

We drop at the Avis in the Embassy Suites all the time. Look for location code QD6. I just made a reservation yesterday. They have a free shuttle to the port also, however sometimes they get busy and you have to wait a bit for the shuttle. Taxi to the port is $6pp, flat fee.

We are renting at Tampa airport, driving the car to Embassy Suites-

We have two free nights there due to accumulated Hilton points- but will have to pay for parking at hotel.

Someone said it is only a 10 minute walk from hotel to cruise terminal? My dh was going to drop me off with the luggage around 9:30 am, then go back to hotel to return rental car.

If we do the above, is the wait to get into the terminal under any shade?

Would it be better just to return car together and pay the $12 for a taxi rather than wait for a shuttle from Budget if they really have one?

We just want the easiest procedure, since the cost for a taxi is minimal.
