The grandiosity of Teatro Colón cannot be ignored. Whether you're walking past, zooming by in a taxi, or are one of the lucky ticket holders about to go to a show, the theater's white marble and lavish details demand admiration. It's ranked as one of the top opera venues in the world, often appearing on lists with the Palais Garnier in Paris, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Sydney Opera House.

Declared a historical monument by the Argentine government in 1989, the theater is a perfect representation and metaphor for the country that worked to build it. Teatro Colón offers a mix of French, German, and Italian-style architecture and design, built up with not just a little turmoil and scandal. One of the top places to visit in Buenos Aires , the building is renowned for both its aesthetics and acoustics.

The current building is actually the second Teatro Colón to exist. The first Teatro Colón stood in front of the Government House (Casa Rosada) between 1857 and 1888, but was replaced when it could not accommodate the shows and audiences of its day.

The current theater took some twenty years to construct. Its cornerstone was placed on May 25, 1890, with hopes to inaugurate the theater tow years later for the anniversary of the fourth centennial of the discovery of the Americas. However, the main architect, Italian Francesco Tamburini, died suddenly in 1891. His replacement, Vittorio Meano, was rumored to have been involved in a love triangle and later shot in his home. Belgian architect Jules Dormal finally finished the project but not until almost two decades later. On May 25, 1908, the inaugural performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Aida" was performed.

Many decades of performance later, the theater was in need of repairs and renovations. After a few starts and stops, the theater was closed in November of 2006 with plans to re-open in May 2008 for the theater's 100th birthday. However, the project grew in budget and scope and finally re-opened on May 24, 2010, in time for the celebration of Argentina's bicentennial. Although there was much strife involved in the renovations, including worker strikes and protests, the final result is breathtaking.

The theater is seven stories and covers an entire block, offering more than can be seen in just one take. The architectural style is eclectic since it was started by an Italian architect who died before it was finished and then taken over by a Belgian architect who added some French touches.

While the exterior alone is magnificent, the inside is even more stunning. The theater's foyer continues to impress with gilded pieces, marble columns, dramatic statues, and stained glass from around the world. Since Europe was a leader in design at the time the theater was built, many of the interior pieces were imported from abroad, such as two lion statues carved from Portuguese marble, stained glass windows made in Paris, and an elaborate mosaic floor that came from Venice.

In the style of 19th century Europe, the auditorium takes the shape of an elongated horseshoe. A giant chandelier is at the center of the auditorium and casts light upon the golds and reds of the upholstery, carpets, curtains, and trim. The chandelier also draws the eyes to the ceiling, which was hand-painted by Argentine artist Raul Soldi. The painting depicts characters of the "Commedia dell' Arte" and includes mimes, goblins, actors, dancers, and musicians all interacting in a fantastical scene above.

Guided Tours

The best way to experience Teatro Colón is by seeing a performance, but getting tickets to a show isn't always possible. Seeing the inside is still a worthwhile addition to your Buenos Aires itinerary—especially for lovers of art and architecture—and you can do so by booking a guided tour . Visitors go through the foyer, the Bustos Gallery of sculptures, the smaller Golden Hall, and the much larger Main Hall, all with a tour guide to explain the rich history of the building and even some secrets of the theater. Tours are available seven days a week throughout the day, but occasionally some rooms are inaccessible because of rehearsals or special performances. Getting There

Moving around congested Buenos Aires can be a headache, but Teatro Colón is centrally located and easy to reach. If you're staying in the city center, you can likely get there on foot, but if you're coming from another part of the city it's conveniently located off the Buenos Aires subway . The D line of the subway has a Teatro Colón stop that is just a few minutes from the theater, but the B and C lines also have stops that aren't far away (Carlos Pellegrini and Lavalle, respectively).

Téatro Colón, Buenos Aires – 9 things to know before you go

Teatro Colón is the top visitor attraction in Buenos Aires, Argentina. You may find it surprising that an opera house ranks so highly, but this marvel is on a par with the Paris Opera, or La Scala in Milan. This venue has the third-best acoustics of any performance space in the world. Married together with astonishing architecture and it’s a must visit for a performance or at the very least for a guided tour . It was opened in 1857 and entitled ‘Colón’ in honour of Christopher Columbus.

My Experience of the ballet ‘Sylvia’ at Teatro Colón

I decided to treat myself to a ticket to see ‘Sylvia’ at the world-renowned Teatro Colón. Tickets were great value (see ‘Booking’ below) at certain times and, although I wasn’t familiar with ‘Sylvia’, I had a fabulous time. There’s a short video.

1. Booking Tickets

There are three ways to book tickets to Teatro Colón:

• Online: Visit the official website to book tickets in advance.
• In Person: Tickets can also be purchased at the box office, but availability may vary. I found it difficult to find someone in the ticket office who spoke English (sadly my Spanish isn’t up to scratch!).
• Guided Tours: Consider booking a guided tour like this one to learn about the history and architecture of the theatre.

Low-cost Tickets at Teatro Colón

It can be inexpensive to buy a ticket. You can get standing-only places for as little as $10,700 ARS ($12 USD) for a performance. At the time I went, I splashed out on a £20 ticket which bought me a seat on the third tier.

2. Arriving at Teatro Colón

The theatre is centrally located at Tucumán 1171, Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. The nearest Subway Station (Subte) is Tribunales – Teatro Colón. Or simply take a taxi, Uber or Cabify from your hotel. It’s wise to arrive at the theatre at least 30 minutes before your event, if only to have time to take in the architecture.

I’d rather be honest: I felt the area around the Teatro wasn’t entirely safe at night. That was just my experience and it may have changed since. So if you’re uncomfortable walking there after dark, make sure to take an Uber.

3. exploring the building.

Take a moment to enjoy the fabulous neoclassical architecture and intricate detailing of this very special theatre. It’s worth paying attention to the foyer in particular, which is adorned with marble columns and ornate chandeliers. They’ve been maintained beautifully. Make sure to walk into the main hall (irrespective of your seat number) to see the opulent decor.

4. Types of Performance

• Opera: Experience world-class opera performances in the main auditorium. This is what the theatre is known for, but don’t swipe past the ballet and concerts.
• Ballet: Teatro Colón attracts some pretty amazing dance companies. The ballet I saw, Sylvia, was fabulously staged.
• Concerts: Attend classical music concerts featuring top musicians from around the globe. The sound in this performance space is the thing which attracts so many artists.

5. Tips for Visitors:

• Dress Code: While there’s no strict dress code, smart casual attire is recommended for performances. I was travelling light, so had a shirt and jeans, which worked perfectly for my third tier seat. In the expensive seats, suits, dresses and pashminas were the general choice.
• Photography: The theatre has got a strict photography policy during performances (updated since my visit).
• Refreshments: There’s a bar for drinks ahead of your performance (or intermission).

6. Accessibility:

• Wheelchair Access: The theater is wheelchair accessible, and there are elevators for those who need them, for example, during tours. However, people with disabilities need to contact the theatre at least 2 weeks before a performance to ensure they can accommodate all needs. I understand that there are free tickets for people with disabilities.

7. Guided Tours:

• Schedule: You can take a tour via Teatro Colón itself (given in Spanish or English or Portuguese). Or you can skip the line with this ticket .

8. Souvenirs:

• Gift Shop: Visit the gift shop for souvenirs and memorabilia of your visit to Teatro Colón. Note: most tours end at the gift shop.

9. Additional Information:

• Language: Most performances are in their original language. The performance page will specify if surtitles or subtitles are available.
• Security: Security measures are in place for the safety of all visitors.

You won’t be disappointed if you visit Teatro Colón, whether for a guided tour or for a performance. Add this to the top of your list, check out the performances during your stay and try to get tickets. If you’re unsuccessful, don’t be downhearted! The guided tour is well worth your time.

Teatro Colón

The Teatro Colón is one of the most important opera houses in the world due to its size and incredible acoustics .

Revered by the public and by leading artists, the Teatro Colón is considered to be among the best five opera houses in existence , alongside the Teatro alla Scala in Milan , the Vienna State Opera , the Semper Opera in Dresden and the Palais Garnier in Paris .

Discovering the Teatro Colón

During your visit to the Teatro Colón, you’ll travel through the enormous entrance hall . If you look up, you’ll see the dome formed by incredible stained glass windows. Visitors should also head to the Sala de los Bustos and the Salón Dorado , which is a pleasant French-inspired room in a Baroque style.

The most interesting part of the visit will be the sight of the concert hall and its elegant red velvet seats . With its horseshoe-shaped floor plan and seating for 4,000 spectators , this hall is made up of beautiful boxes and different categories of seats.

The experience of a lifetime

A visit to the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires is an enjoyable and entertaining way to learn about a place that’s part of the city’s history as you explore its facilities.

Another way to enter the theatre, cheaper and perhaps more entertaining, is to buy a ticket to one of its many shows . The cheapest tickets cost a lot less than a guided tour.

Tours take place every day and are offered in multiple languages and leave from the box office every 15 minutes. The Colon plans ahead, and the benefit of this is that you can see what performances they have scheduled for the months and year ahead. You can also buy tickets online in advance, a huge plus for big concerts that sell out quickly. Events are organised programmatically, so you can choose the opera, ballet, one-off performances, or the Buenos Aires philharmonic, among others. Behave courteously

A few times a year the opera house will announce free concerts, or discounted ticket prices if you sign up for the year, allowing the chance to attend many performances without denting your bank balance too much. The Teatro Colon is widely recognised as one of the best opera houses in the world. Famous for its incredible acoustics and timeless setting that conjures up past eras and all the glamour and pomp of civilised sophistication, playing, singing or dancing in the Colon is a dream for many performers. The building is almost 110 years old

The current building, which is one of the most opulent in Buenos Aires, was inaugurated in 1908, meaning that next year the building will celebrate its 110th birthday. Interestingly, the front of the Colon is actually the back. The facade that fronts onto 9 de Julio Avenue was originally conceived of as the rear of the building, but when a city block was removed to create the boulevard, it became the de-facto front. All of the elements for each performance are produced on site

The opera house has a vast underground level which contains workshops where every element necessary for the performance is produced. From the elaborate sets to the exquisite costumes, Teatro Colon is a hive of creative production, something of which the theatre and staff are very proud. The building was designed by three different architects

The Colon building is nothing if not eclectic. Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century very much looked to Europe for its architectural inspiration. The lead architect of the current building was an Italian named Francesco Tamburini, but upon his death, his business partner, Italian Victor Meano, took over, until his death, after which Belgian architect Jules Dormal took the reins. This resulted in a number of different styles being used within the building, resulting in a unique architectural gem. The Grand Hall was inspired by classical French and Italian theatres

The decorative spectacle of the Grand Hall, which lies at the heart of the building, was designed in keeping with the stringent standards of classic theatres and operas in France and Italy. It is a horseshoe shape, topped with a beautiful hand painted dome. The hall has a maximum seating capacity of 2,478 and a further 500 people are permitted to stand.
