  • As chamadas que você realizar serão cobradas por minuto cheio. Ou seja, de 60 em 60 segundos. Isso significa que ao realizar uma chamada de 40 segundos será cobrada a tarifa referente a 1 minuto. Em uma chamada de 1 minuto e 50 segundos, a taxa é de 2 minutos;
  • A disponibilidade dos serviços segue, primeiramente, a cobertura da operadora parceira naquele país;
  • É necessário um saldo mínimo de R$ 5,00 para utilizar o roaming internacional;
  • Bônus de promoções da Vivo não contam para utilizar no roaming internacional;
  • Faça recargas de crédito no exterior por meio da sua rede de banco;

  • 50 minutos em ligações locais (no país visitado) ou em ligações para o Brasil;
  • Recebimento ilimitado de ligações de qualquer DDI;
  • SMS ilimitado para qualquer operadora do mundo;
  • Liga para outros países por R$1,99 por minuto;

  • A cobrança do serviço é diária e segue o horário local do país que está sendo visitado;
  • Chamadas são cobradas por minuto cheio. Ou seja, de 60 em 60 segundos. Para uma chamada de 40 segundos será cobrada a tarifa referente a 1 minuto;
  • Quando você trafegar na internet pela primeira vez utilizando os dados em roaming a tarifa diária será cobrada para utilizar a rede até às 23h59 do horário local. Se houver continuidade de uso, uma nova tarifa será cobrada e a franquia será renovada (de forma não cumulativa);
  • Quando você atingir o volume de dados máximo sua velocidade será reduzida para 32kb por segundo até às 23h59 do horário local. A velocidade é restabelecida de acordo com a renovação da diária;

  • Vivo Selfie;

  • A primeira é por SMS, onde basta enviar uma mensagem escrito “TRAVEL WEB” para 1515;

  • Vá até as “configurações” do celular;
  • Clique em “Mais” e em “Configurações de rede”;

  • Vá até “Ajustes” e depois em “celular”;
  • Selecione “Redes móveis” e clique na “Opção de dados de celulares”;

Buying a SIM card in Brazil: Best prepaid and eSIM card options

In this article, you will find a complete breakdown of the best options for SIM cards in Brazil for tourists.

As someone who was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, I must admit I was very disappointed once I found out how hard it is for foreigners to get a prepaid SIM card in Brazil. Once I saw how complicated the process was, I immediately decided I needed to put together a guide to help other people as well.

brazil sim cards

Requirements for buying a SIM card in Brazil

The main reason that buying a SIM card in Brazil as a tourist is a challenging task is that most companies require you to have a CPF , which is our national personal identification number (like your tax number).

As a tourist, you obviously do not have this document to provide. You can buy the SIM card without it, but you cannot activate it without a CPF in most cases.

So, what are the alternatives?

  • Ask a Brazilian friend to register your new SIM card under their number, if you know anyone there
  • Buy the prepaid SIM card at a newspaper stand, pharmacy, or hardware store, where they won’t require you to have a CPF. Then, head to an official store of the mobile provider and ask them to register it for you. This process isn’t guaranteed to work, but in most cases it does. They will be able to register it with your passport only.
  • Avoid all this hassle and buy an eSIM instead. Once you get out of the plane in Brazil, you will already be connected. ( Skip to this section for more)

Pro tip : In Brazil, we do not say SIM cards, we call them “chip”. The prepaid one would be a “chip pré-pago”.

RECOMMENDED

Need an esim.

If you’re short on time, check the options from our most recommended providers for mobile internet around the world: Airalo and Nomad.

Available Brazilian SIM card companies

Let’s start with the basics. Brazil has 3 major mobile providers: Claro , Vivo and TIM .

In addition to these, there is also Oi which recently changed its business model and stopped offering mobile plans to focus on solutions for entire households.

Many websites will also tell you there is a prepaid SIM card option offered by Correios (the Brazilian official postal company) but I do not recommend it and this is why I didn’t even cover it here. For us, Brazilians, this is not an option we even consider as the coverage and the plans offered are not nearly as good as the other three main options.

Let me walk you through what each of the main mobile providers offer:

Claro SIM card options for tourists

Claro is one of the most popular mobile providers in Brazil and you will find a Claro store in every major city. They have good coverage throughout the country and are a reliable company.

Claro used to offer a prepaid SIM card option, especially for tourists called Claro Visitors. As of the moment I am writing this post, this option is no longer available (but I am mentioning it here as it is worth checking out whenever you go).

Claro’s prepaid SIM card option has multiple different plans available, with different budgets and data coverage depending on your needs. Check their options here .

Vivo SIM card options for tourists

Vivo is another great option when it comes to buying a prepaid SIM card in Brazil. You will be able to buy a Vivo prepaid SIM card in almost every supermarket, newspaper stand, and local shop. They are very easy to find and top up.

One big advantage of Vivo is that they allow you to buy a prepaid SIM card online through their website. For R$ 20 (cca 4,15 USD) you will get 4 GB valid for 15 GB. You can also top it up further if needed.

What I don’t like about Vivo is the SIM card activation process . You have to download an app and deal with a lot of steps, which are hard to navigate if you do not speak Portuguese. If you are able to go to a shop in person, that is the best solution for getting you all set.

Note : Buying the prepaid SIM card in person at a shop once you arrive in Brazil will give you more options and possibly cheaper prices (Vivo states so themselves on their website). From my experience, I can confirm that the options they have online are very limited.

Check the official Vivo website for more information.

Tim SIM card options for tourists

In my opinion, TIM is the best Brazilian company for buying prepaid SIM cards. When we visit my family, we usually get our prepaid SIM cards from TIM because the whole activation process is the smoothest with them.

It is easy to buy their prepaid SIM cards in stores, supermarkets, and many other outlets. TIM offers a prepaid SIM card made specifically for tourists called TIM Visitors. It costs R$ 25,00/Week (5,15 USD/week) and will give you 1,5 GB valid for 7 days. There are also other options that include minutes and SMS texts as well.

TIM’s prepaid SIM card options are called TIM Pré TOP and are described below:

You can check more about their prepaid SIM card options at TIM’s official website .

Which is the best prepaid SIM card in Brazil for tourists?

In our opinion, the best prepaid SIM card in Brazil for tourists is definitely TIM.

TIM has very good coverage in Rio and most of the main cities in Brazil. The last time we visited Brazil, we went on a trip to Paraty, and during the boat trips, our TIM phone was the only one that had signals (everyone else had Vivo or Claro).

Their prices are competitive, and what makes them stand out is the easiness of the whole process of buying and activating the SIM card.

That being said – you should still be mindful of the fact that you may require a CPF to register the SIM card. Make sure you ask all the details before you purchase your number.

Considering this hurdle, the best option for tourists visiting Brazil for the first time is to get an eSIM beforehand.

What is the best eSIM for Brazil?

The best eSIM for travelers visiting Brazil are Nomad and Airalo .

We have tested and used many different eSIM providers and the only ones we can recommend are these two.

Nomad has amazing service everywhere we go, we never felt like we were left stranded. It is also super easy to use.

Airalo offers amazing data packages all over the world, which makes it very handy for traveling.

Brazil sim cards

Where to buy a SIM card in Brazil?

You can buy a prepaid SIM card in several places around Brazil.

The most popular options are:

  • Mobile stores – You will find the official stores of Claro, TIM, and Vivo in every major city in Brazil, such as Rio and São Paulo. The easiest place to find them is in shopping malls.
  • Newspaper stands
  • Supermarkets
  • General stores such as “Lojas Americanas”.

Buying a prepaid SIM card in Brazil is very easy, they are very easy to find. As we mentioned before, just make sure you ask about the activation as this is the tricky part of the process.

The most popular questions about buying a SIM card in Brazil

Can i buy a prepaid sim card at the rio de janeiro airport.

There is only one small pharmacy currently that sells prepaid SIM cards, but they only sell the one offered by Correios (which I do not advise getting).

If you do not want to get an eSIM, the best option is to wait until you get downtown and go to an official store of one of the three main mobile providers. There are a few shops selling tourist SIM cards but don’t fall for these as they are just a scam – overpriced and not that good.

Read also : The two main airports in Rio de Janeiro

What do you need to buy a SIM card in Brazil?

As a tourist, the only document you may need to buy a SIM card in Brazil is your passport (but in most cases, you won’t need to provide any sort of personal ID).

To activate the SIM card, some companies may require you to have a CPF number so make sure you will be able to register your SIM card as a tourist when you buy it.

Can I use my US phone in Brazil?

Unless your plan offers coverage in Brazil, you will pay roaming fees if using your US phone number and they are usually quite expensive.

We recommend you to align with your mobile provider before the trip and if they do not offer any good plan for data coverage in Brazil, it is better to buy an eSIM for your Brazil trip instead. Check Airalo’s or Nomad’s eSIM options.

What is the best SIM card for Brazil if I will also be traveling through South America?

Claro and Tim offer nice plans with coverage across multiple countries in South America, but unfortunately, they are only available for registered users, not for prepaid SIM cards.

If you will be traveling through multiple countries in South America, the best option is to get an eSIM card with Nomad . They allow you to select exactly which countries you will be visiting so you can get a plan tailored to your needs.

How can I top up my Brazilian prepaid SIM card?

You can buy credits to top up your Brazilian prepaid SIM card in almost every newspaper stand, general store, and supermarket, besides the mobile provider’s official store.

The top-up options available will vary depending on the mobile provider you pick for your Brazilian prepaid SIM card.

As I said at the start, I am quite disappointed to see that the Brazilian mobile providers made it so hard for foreigners and tourists to get a prepaid SIM card in Brazil. Even though they did create good alternatives during the World Cup and the Olympic Games, unfortunately, this is the current scenario.

We hope this guide has helped shed some light on the whole process. If you need more help when organizing your trip to Brazil, here are a few useful resources:

A physical prepaid sim card from  Three with 10 GB data for $24.90 USD is only $2.49 USD per Gigabyte. This is a physical prepaid sim card though that will be delivered to your home address.

Can tourists buy a prepaid sim card in Brazil?

The short answer is: yes, tourists are allowed to buy a prepaid sim card in Brazil. However, without the help of a Brazilian local friend things get very complicated.

All local prepaid sim cards in Brazil need to be registered on a so-called CPF number, which is a Brazilian personal tax identification number that is mentioned on a Brazilian ID card.

So when buying a prepaid sim card in Brazil bringing your passport is not enough!

A sincere pain, and that is why I recommended you in the beginning that staying connected in Brazil is not as easy as any other country in the world. Buying a sim card for tourists is pretty much a mess in Brazil.

It is about time someone in the Brazil government finally opens its eyes and provides a prepaid sim card service for tourists that does NOT require a Brazilian tax number for registration. It can not be that difficult as in any other country in the world it is possible as well.

So if you really want to buy a local prepaid sim card in Brazil you will need to ask any Brazilian friend for a photocopy of their ID-card which includes their CPF number.

This is also the main reason why Traveltomtom does NOT recommend buying a prepaid sim card in Brazil, but buying an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Brazil .

Mobile internet operators in Brazil

There are 3 main mobile internet operators in Brazil: Vivo, Claro and TIM and all of them sell prepaid sim card plans with the above mentioned restrictions.

If you have already read about my experiences buying a sim card in Rio de Janeiro or watched my corresponding vlog you know that I actually found a Vivo store in Ipanema that allowed me to buy a prepaid sim card without a CPF.

I am sure this Vivo store had some kind of workaround because every other Vivo, Claro or TIM store I tried in Rio de Janeiro AND Sao Paulo they would not let me buy a prepaid sim card without a CPF number.

Correios Celular

On top of the 3 main mobile internet operators there is also a prepaid sim card that you can buy from the Post Office, so called Correios. They operate on their own 3G/4G/LTE network. Unfortunately I could not find more info about their network coverage online. They only have a 3G/4G?LTE network, there is no 5G signal available with a prepaid sim card from Correios Celular.

In the end I ended up buying a Correios Celular prepaid sim card as well. It was the first sim card store I found that was able to get me a prepaid sim card, but it took me 3 days to finally get connected in Brazil. I wrote down all my experiences at the end of this blog.

Best way to get around Brazil

Every heard of 12Go? They compare all mode of transportation in one overview. They show you all busses, flights, train and even boats to get from A to B and they also operate in Brazil. Try it out below yourself.

Powered by 12Go system

Find a complete overview with up to date prices, available seats, company reviews, time schedules and even all flight options. Best thing is that you directly reserve your seat and get the ticket confirmation directly in your email.

I have used 12Go a lot for finding amazing flight deals and for booking my bus tickets for traveling around South America.

International Airports on arrival

In almost every country around the world you can buy a prepaid sim card for tourists on arrival at the airport, but NOT in Brazil. I flew into Sao Paulo Airport (GRU) and also into Rio de Janeiro (GIG) multiple times but as of March 2024 it is still pretty much impossible to buy a prepaid tourist sim card for Brazil at any of the international airports.

Rio de Janeiro GIG Airport

When arriving at Rio de Janeiro GIG Airport you can only buy a sim card at the Drogerias Farmais, which is locates all the way on the other side of the international arrival hall. When you get out of the international arrivals, walk straight towards the domestic arrivals.

But before you go to the Drogerias Farmais to buy a tourist sim card, make sure you have a Brazilian CPF number on hand. And if you do, you can only buy a prepaid sim card from Correios Celular.

Sao Paulo GRU Airport

buying sim card sao paulo airport gru

At GRU Airport Sao Paulo there is a bookstore called Conveniencia Livraria on the second floor, above the international arrivals hall. Here you could potentially buy a sim card. But only if you have a CPF on hand and only before 07.00 pm.

Also same here, they only sell prepaid sim cards from Correios Celular, the Post Office, not from one of the mobile internet providers.

Mobile internet stores - shopping malls

The best place to buy a prepaid sim card in Brazil is at any of the bigger shopping malls and walk into a store of retail store of Vivo, Claro or TIM.

Farmacies, Correios, book shops

Some farmacies, book stores/kiosks and of course also the post office Correios itself sell prepaid sim cards of Correios Celular and TIM.

Be prepared that English is very little spoken in Brazil. You will most certainly end up using Google Translate to figure things out. But people in Brazil are very friendly and helpful.

Last but not least get your sim card for Brazil online. Not only do you bypass all the hassle of buying a sim card in Brazil, but you also do not need any form of registration. The easiest way is to order an e-sim card for Brazil on the internet and if your phone is not e-sim compatible then buy an international prepaid sim card for Brazil .

Arrive prepared and as soon as the plane lands you are online!

Prices prepaid sim cards in Brazil

Price for prepaid sim card plans in Brazil constantly change of course. Traveltomtom does everything in its power to keep all the info as up to date as possible. As per March 2024 $1 USD = 4.98 BRL and 10 BRL = $2 USD.

correios celular brazil prepaid sim card

A prepaid Correios Celular sim card cost 10 BRL. This is the fee for the registration. Then they offer the following data packages:

  • 1.5 GB data + 60 minutes = 25 BRL - $5 USD
  • 3 GB data + 100 minutes = 30 BRL - $6 USD
  • 5 GB data + unlimited minutes = 40 BRL - $8 USD
  • 9 GB data + unlimited minutes = 50 BRL - $10 USD
  • 20 GB data + unlimited minutes = 75 BRL - $15 USD

All plans are valid for 30 days and inclusive of unlimited WhatsApp. That means if you used all of your data you can still use WhatsApp.

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend a Correios Celular over any TIM, Vivo or Claro sim card. A Correios Celular prepaid sim card would only be an emergency solution if you can not get any other sim card. Correios Celular has the weakest network coverage and inside building the signal was horrible. The data speed was also disappointing. Read more about my experiences towards the end of the blog.

claro prepaid sim card brazil

Buying a Claro prepaid sim card also costs you 10 BRL for the registration and they only offer 2 prepaid data packages:

  • 2 GB data for 7 days = 9.99 BRL - $2 USD
  • 6 GB data for 30 days = 29.99 BRL - $6 USD

The Claro prepaid data packages include unlimited calling minutes in Brazil and Whatsapp. For more information check out the Claro Brazil website . You can only get a physical prepaid sim card at Claro stores, e-sim cards for tourists are not provided.

At TIM they also charge 10 BRL for the prepaid sim card registration and then you can choose from one of the following prepaid data package:

  • 9 GB data** + unlimited calls/text for 15 days = 15 BRL - $3 USD

Sounds like a great prepaid sim card deal, but be aware that the 9 GB data is in fact 3.3 GB + 2 GB recharge bonus + an extra 3.7 GB loyalty bonus. For more info check out the TIM Brazil website . You can only get a physical prepaid sim card at TIM stores, e-sim cards for tourists are not provided.

vivo prepaid sim card brazil

A prepaid Vivo sim card also costs 10 BRL for the activation. At Vivo they have at least a couple different offers compared to the other mobile internet providers and plus their website is much more informative. Here are the data package deals of Vivo:

  • 3 GB data for 7 days = 11.99  BRL - $2.4 USD
  • 4 GB data for 7 days = 14.99  BRL - $3 USD
  • 4 GB data for 15 days = 14.99  BRL - $3 USD
  • 5 GB data for 15 days = 19.99  BRL - $4 USD

All Vivo data packages include free Whatsapp and unlimited calling in Brazil. For more information check out the Vivo Brazil website . You can only get a physical prepaid sim card at Vivo stores, e-sim cards for tourists are not provided.

Best 4G/5G network in Brazil in 2024

If you are traveling around Brazil then you want to make sure to stay connected to a data network even if you go off the beaten path. Distances are long in Brazil and you might end up traveling for many hours. Therefore let’s compare the 4G/5G network coverage maps of the main mobile internet providers in Brazil.

Is there 5G in Brazil?

Yes, there is 5G available in Brazil and the 5G network coverage in Brazil is actually pretty good compared to many other South American countries. Almost all popular tourist destinations in Brazil have 5G coverage.

Claro 4G/5G network coverage map

claro 4g 5g network coverage map brazil 2024

Tim 4G/5G network coverage map

tim 4g 5g network coverage map brazil 2024

Vivo 4G/5G network coverage map

vivo 4g 5g network coverage map brazil 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Brazil in 2024.

From the above 4G/5G coverage maps for Brazil we can clearly see that there is a very extensive mobile network available around the country for all the mobile internet providers. However, it is also easy to see that when comparing the mobile network coverage maps of the mobile internet providers in Brazil, Vivo has the best 4G/5G network in Brazil in 2024.

As mentioned before there is very little information online available about the network coverage of Correios Celular. Fact is that they do NOT have 5G, but only a 3G/4G network. Based on my own experiences I was not really satisfied with the network coverage as inside buildings I often completely lost phone signal.

Best prepaid sim card in Brazil in 2024

In my above comparison of all the prepaid sim cards in Brazil Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that based on the prices for prepaid sim card plans and the 4G/5G network coverage in Brazil, Vivo is the best prepaid sim card in Brazil in 2024.

Therefore for those travelers that want to buy a local prepaid sim card in Brazil Traveltomtom recommends buying a Vivo sim card for traveling in Brazil.

However, as you have read between the lines it is pretty clear that I recommend everyone traveling to Brazil to buy a sim card for Brazil on the internet. Weather that is by simply ordering an e-sim card for Brazil or buying an international prepaid sim card for Brazil.

The best-buy sim card for tourists in Brazil is a Three Data Pack physical prepaid sim card with 10 GB data for $24.90 USD. Unfortunately this sim card is not available as an e-sim card.

For a comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Brazil in 2024  click on the link and I tell you everything you need to know about using e-sim cards for your trip to Brazil.

My experiences buying a sim card in Brazil

In the following vlog you can see what it was like trying to get a Brazil prepaid sim card in Rio de Janeiro.

After trying multiple Vivo, Claro and TIM stores in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the first 3 days I basically begged someone in the post office in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro to let me buy a Correios Celular prepaid sim card. They used someone’s CPF for the registration and they made it work for me, so big thumbs up for willing to help a stranger out.

Most of the time the Correios Celular sim card worked ok. I got a package with 20 GB data for about $17 USD so price-wise it wasn’t that bad either. The biggest bummer was the network strength and the internet speed. More often than desirable there was no or a very weak signal inside buildings, coffee shops, etc. which still made me depend on the WiFI.

Anyway I was grateful that at least someone let me buy a Correios Celular prepaid sim card without having a CPF number.

I hope all the above tips for getting connected in Brazil, the info about the 4G/5G network coverage, the up to date prices as per March 2024 and my conclusion about the best prepaid sim card in Brazil were helpful for your upcoming trip to Brazil.

6 alternative and arty ways to discover Mexico City culture

Amid art deco architecture and Frida Kahlo’s creations, find Mexico City’s pre-Hispanic traditions and an Indigenous crafts scene.

Mexico’s sprawling capital is a gateway to the country’s Maya ruins, miles of beaches, rocky canyons and traditional Indigenous villages. But many travellers find the metropolis has an allure all of its own, and a handful of days can be well spent touring its neighbourhoods and historic centre. Mexico’s best museums are here, and its many galleries and markets help facilitate one of the strongest creative scenes in Latin America. Dig a little deeper to find the city’s pre-Hispanic roots, and discover how many customs are linked to the ancient Aztec and Maya civilisations.

1. Kayak the ancient canals of Xochimilco

Before the Spanish conquest in 1521, Mexico City, then called Tenochtitlán, was built on two small islands inside Lake Texcoco. The Aztecs built canals and floating farms called chinampas to feed its growing population. Today, all that remains of these ancient waterways are in Tláhuac and Xochimilco, a neighbourhood 15 miles south of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. Flat-bottomed party boats called trajineras cruise Xochimilco’s canals daily, but a guided kayaking trip provides a more tranquil — and environmentally friendly — visit. Tours offer the chance to spot Xochimilco’s wildlife, including the critically endangered axolotl salamander and more than 200 bird species, while learning about the history and science behind chinampas, which still provide food for Mexico City residents.

2. Browse the Museo de Arte Popular

In the historic centre of Mexico City is the Museo de Arte Popular , a beautifully designed handicraft museum housed inside a 1920s art deco building. The museum, which once served as Mexico City’s fire department headquarters, celebrates traditional Mexican craft in all its forms, from textiles and pottery to children’s toys, furniture and giant alebrijes — mythical creatures made from wood or papier-mache. High-quality crafts from almost every Mexican state are displayed thematically over several floors, including ceramics from Jalisco, piñatas from Puebla and ceremonial masks from Chiapas. Particularly striking are the small but impressive Day of the Dead craft collection and the á rbol de la vida (tree of life) pieces – colourful, intricate clay sculptures depicting the creation of life.

3. Sip on pulque, the drink of the Aztec gods

Pulque is a drink made from the fermented sap of agave, the same plant used to make tequila and mezcal. It has been drunk for more than 2,000 years, making it Mexico’s oldest alcoholic beverage. During the Aztec empire, pulque was considered a sacred drink, reserved for gods, emperors and ceremonial events. The introduction of beer and distilled spirits by the Spanish in the 16th century marked the beginning of the end for pulque, with many of Mexico City’s pulquerias — taverns specialising in the drink — closing between the early 20th and 21st centuries. But a recent resurgence has seen several reopen across the city, making it one of the best places in Mexico to try the tipple. La Canica — a pulqueria in the Tabacalera neighbourhood run by a family that has been in the pulque business for five generations — takes a modern approach to the ancient drink, infusing freshly made pulque with dozens of seasonal flavours, from guava and mandarin to marzipan and toasted oats.

4. Try Mexico City’s ancient caviar

Ahuautle — which loosely translates to ‘seeds of joy’ in the ancient Nahuatl language and are also known as ‘water fly eggs’ — were sacred to the Aztecs. During the rainy season, a type of water fly called axayácatl would lay its eggs in Lake Texcoco. These were harvested for Aztec emperors and used as offerings to the gods. Montezuma, one of the last emperors of the Aztec empire, is said to have eaten them every morning to improve his strength. Hard to get hold of and up to four times more expensive a kilogram than beef, the eggs have been dubbed ahuautle , the ‘caviar’ of Mexico, by the capital’s chefs. Only a handful of restaurants in the capital still serve ahuautle, one of which is Ayluardo’s — in the Iztapalapa neighbourhood, in the east of Mexico City. It serves the water fly eggs — which taste intensely fishy, similar to dried shrimp — in pancakes with tomatillo (a bright green, acidic fruit native to Mexico) and serrano chilli sauce.

Just a few minutes’ walk from Museo de Arte Popular is this hub for artisans, Mexico City’s largest and best arts and crafts market. It is home to 350 stands selling a huge variety of crafts, or artesanias in Spanish, from all over Mexico, including handblown glass from Jalisco, silver jewellery from Guerrero and patterned chaquira beadwork from Jalisco, crafted by the indigenous Huichol people. For beautiful ceremonial Mayan masks made of wood and obsidian, head to stand 104, where you’ll often see the craftspeople at work. Also seek out the artisans selling amate — colourful works painted on to paper made from the pulp of fig and mulberry trees; the same type of paper was once used by the ancient Aztecs and Mayas to produce manuscripts.

6. Experience Mexican folk dance at El Ballet Folklórico de México

Founded in 1952 by choreographer and dancer Amalia Hernández, Ballet Folklórico celebrates Mexico’s diverse folklore traditions through dance, music and traditional dress. The performances take audiences from Mexico’s ancient past up to the revolution in 1910, travelling through the states of Oaxaca, Jalisco, Sonora, Zacatecas, Guerrero and more. Many of the dances take inspiration from Mexico’s Indigenous cultures, such as the Deer Dance (a contemporary piece that depicts a pre-hunting ritual practised by the Indigenous people of Sonora and Sinaloa) and the Guelaguetza, a folkloric ballet inspired by the ceremonial dances of the Mixtec and Zapotec people of Oaxaca. Performances are held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes — a white-marbled, art nouveau palace commissioned by President Porfirio Díaz in 1905 — on Wednesdays at 8.30pm and Sundays at 9.30am and 8.30pm.
