Delhi got its third Dilli Haat on 13 July, 2014 as Dilli Haat at Janakpuri was inaugurated in a colorful ceremony by Sh. Parvesh Sahib Singh, Hon’ble MP. Sh. Jagdish Mukhi, Hon’ble MLA and Smt. Rajni Mamtani, Hon’ble Councilor graced the occasion with their presence. Ms. Rinku Dhugga, Secretary (Tourism), Govt. of Delhi, Dr. Puneet Kr. Goel, MD & CEO, DTTDC & Sh. Ravi Dadhich, General Manager DTTDC were also present among other dignitaries.

DHJP is more spacious than the other two Dilli Haats which are at INA and Pitampura. Dilli Haat, Janakpuri is spread over a sprawling area of 8.00 acres. This new venue showcases the country’s craft and cultural tradition, and is an open air shopper’s paradise which is a one stop destination for art, craft, and music and food lovers. This Dilli Haat has been developed by Delhi Tourism at a cost of Rs. 120 Crore.

Dilli Haat has a provision of 100 Nos. of typical craft stalls, 74 Nos. open platform shops, 46 Nos. of A.C Shops. These stalls showcase ethnic and exotic products and materials exclusive to India. There are endless shopping opportunities for the visitors as it brings India’s old rural tradition of open market space to contemporary and modern Delhi.

Dilli Haat, Janakpuri  gives ample opportunity for food lovers to savor delectable lip smacking food as there are 14 Nos. of food stalls set up where one will be able to savor the flavors from across the country and 15 food stalls serving cuisines from around the world.

A sprawling Exposition Hall spreading over 960 Sqm. has been set up at DilliHaat, Janakpuri where various exhibitions, seminars, events etc takes place. The outer walls of the exposition halls will be covered by creepers which will provide a green roof top.

This new Dilli Haat will be fully equipped with an A.C Auditorium which has a capacity of 800 seats. This auditorium will have the latest technology and equipments and will be the biggest modern auditorium in West Delhi.

An Amphitheatre having 820 seat capacities is another special feature at the Haat which not only encourages art and culture but is also a one stop destination for various cultural events.

Some special features of the Haat are - A huge dormitory with 80 beds ,5 Nos. of public toilets with energy efficient fittings and light fixtures, 24 x 7 Power back up, Proper sewage treatment plant, water treatment plant, rain water harvesting and 3 garbage dumping spaces have also been constructed to keep the Haat clean and eco friendly.

The new Dilli Haat has been developed with a number of eco-friendly features and is fully disabled-friendly. Lifts, ramps and escalators are installed for the convenience of differently-abled persons and senior citizens.

Keeping in mind the security of the general public, CCTV cameras have been installed at the venue which provides proper surveillance. There are provisions of parking at the basement and surface area. More than 240 cars, 3 buses can be parked at the surface area and almost 55 cars and 120 two wheeler can be parked at the basement parking area.

Cost of ticket is Rs.20/- for adult and Rs.10/- for child.

The nearest Metro Station to reach Dilli Haat Janakpuri is Tilak Nagar or Janak Puri (East) Metro Station.

There is a sizable population of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples in Delhi along with a small number of shrines that belong to different beliefs; in short there is a temple on each nook and cranny of Delhi.

Bhairon Temple, Pragati Maidan

Sri Kilkari Bhairav Temple or Bhairo Temple is situated in the backyard of the Purana Qila (Old Fort) in Pragati Maidan. It is believed that this shrine was built by the Pandavas. Bhairo Temple is one of its kinds as the temple allows devotees to offer alcohol to the deity.

There are two wings of the temple – the Doodhiya Bhairav Temple, where milk is offered to the idol, and the Kilkari Bhairav Temple, where the devotees offer alcohol to the presiding deity. It is also believed that Bheem (One of the Pandavas), worshipped in this temple and attained Siddhis as well.

Note – You must carry alcohol with you, if you wish to offer it to the deity of Bhairav. The temple doesn’t sell alcohol and you can’t even find a shop nearby.

This temple is more than just a place of worship! Reflecting their good taste in architecture, Akshardham is a must visit temple in Delhi. This massive shrine is situated near the Common Wealth Games Village on NH 24.

The temple is dedicated to Swami Narayan Akshardham. A large complex situated amidst gardens; it is one of the well-maintained temples in Delhi. Along with paying homage to Swami Narayan, one can look at the rich collection of Indian culture here; the light and sound show in the evening is worth seeing.

Note: Visitors are not allowed to take carry any baggage, phone and camera in the temple. So, it is a good idea to travel light here.

This ancient temple is reckoned to be one of the five temples that were built during the time of the Mahabharata. However, the current structure had been reconstructed by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1724.

It is situated on the Baba Kharak Singh Marg in Connaught Palace and is evidently one of the most popular places of worship in Delhi. The main deity in the temple is that of Lord Hanuman. The ceiling of the shrine is worth appreciating where the images of Lord Rama are embossed.

Although the temple remains open on all days, a large number of devotees throng on Tuesdays and Saturdays here.

Note: The temple holds a Guinness Record for the continuous chanting of the mantra ‘Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Ram’.

Gauri Shankar Temple, Chandi Chowk

It is an ancient temple that is located near the Digambar Jain Temple on the main Chandni Chowk Road. According to legends this temple was built by a war soldier who had vowed to construct the temple if he managed to come through the injury he suffered in the battle.

It is reckoned that the Shiva Linga or the Phallus presiding in the shrine is 800 years old. Other than the idols of Shiva, his consort Parvati and their two sons Ganesha and Kartik, the silver paintings hanging on the walls and depicting scenes from the life of Lord Shiva are the major attractions. On Mondays the temple is thronged by devotees.

Note: The best time to visit Gauri Shankar Temple is during the celebration of Shivratri, when the entire temple is decorated and looks incredible.

It is one of the most popular Hindu temples in Delhi. The shrine is marked by the colossal 108ft statue of Lord Hanuman and can be seen from the both Jhandewalan and Karol Bagh metro station. Tuesdays are quite crowded here, despite the fact that the temple stays open every day.

Other than the massive effigy of Lord Hanuman, which fairly does its job of attracting devotees and tourists, the entrance of the temple is also an attraction. The entrance door has been carved in a shape of the mouth of the deity and one can reach the main hall of the shrine through a passageway.

Note: During the evening Aarti; the arms of Hanuman’s giant statue move back, the chest slides open and the beautiful images of Lord Shri Rama & Devi Sita protrudes to give darshan (sight) to all the devotees. Certainly, a dazzling sight!

Uttara Swami Malai Mandir, R K Puram

Known as a South Indian Temple, the Uttara Swami Malai Mandir is situated in R.K. Puram Sector-7. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, this temple boasts of a unique architecture, where no cement and mortar have been used to construct the shrine.

It is also one of those few places where Hindus from the Tamil, Telegu, Kannada & Malayali communities’ worship together. The main deity in the shrine is that of Lord Murugan; however other deities presiding here are of the Lord’s mother, father and brother. The complex also has a number of peacocks sanctifying the ambiance.

Shri Jagannath Mandir, Hauz Khas

A replica of the Old Jagannath Temple in Puri, Shri Jagannath Mandir is situated in Hauz Khas. Highly revered by the Oriya community, this temple has a lot of cultural significance as well.

Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, Red Fort

This 17th century temple is probably the one thing other than the Red Fort that you cannot ignore in Old Delhi. A red-stone structure, it is situated opposite the Lal Qila (if you are on Netaji Subhash Marg, going to Kashmiri Gate from Daryaganj) and is amongst the biggest Jain temples in the city.

It is a two-storied building with an inquiry office and a shoe house located in the lower floor and the main deity presides on the floor above it. The second floor opens to a balcony that overlooks Chandni Chowk. There are three main chambers inside where statues of various Tirthankars are placed. The most famous ones are that of Lord Mahavira & Lord Adinath.

Note: The temple remains closed for visitors from 12 Noon to 6 PM, so you have to plan your visit either in the early mornings or late evenings.

This colossal complex in Chhatarpur is worth seeing in Delhi. Dedicated to Goddess Katyayani, this temple is one of the most popular places in Delhi to see. Sprawling across 70 acres of area, the Chhatarpur Mandir has a blend of both South and North Indian architectural styles and thus offers a unique picture to the visitors.

Also known as Birla Mandir , Lakshmi Narayan Temple is situated on the west of Connaught Place on the Mandir Marg. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi and had been constructed in 1930s by the famed industrialist B.D.Birla.

It is a two-story marble stone structure with the main deity carved in black stone (called Kasauti stone), which is a sculpture of Lord Parshavnath, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism.

The temple also has sculptures of other prominent Jain Tirthankaras such as Lord Sumatinath (the 5th Tirthankara), Lord Adinath and Lord Ajinath. Since it is the oldest Jain temple in the city, a large number of devotees and tourists visit here.

Dilli Haat is where the culture of all states come together under one open-air complex. It’s where you can buy state known handicraft items from across the country at reasonable prices. It allows local artisans and craftsmen to present, market and sell their handicraft items.

It has a massive food court which has counters from all the different states of the country. From Rajasthan’s Gatte ki sabzi to Bengal’s Fish, you will get it all. Not just that, you will also be experiencing some cultural activities that happen here every now and then.

Created with the thought of preserving and displaying the Indian Culture, Dilli Haat is a go-to place for every kind of traveller to experience the culture and tradition of 29 states under one roof.

Apart from a few shops that are permanent here, most shops here are on a bi-weekly rotational basis at a nominal fee of Rs.100 per day and hence you will find new vendors every time you visit it.

Talk to the local artisans from across the country, understand their skills, eat, shop, and participate in the various activities and spend a wonderful day here. A great place to buy souvenirs but do remember to bargain and get yourself the item at a reasonable price. Items start here as low as Rs.50.

Do Note: There are 3 Dilli Haats in New Delhi. However, the information mentioned here is about Dilli Haat INA.

The other two Dilli Haats, namely Dilli Haat Pitampura and Dilli Haat Janakpuri were only constructed recently and they are not as expansive and have markets and activities only during certain festivals such as Teej, Rakhi, Diwali, Karwa Chauth etc.

Also, do not be mistaken for shops that are named as Dilli Haat at various locations in Delhi.

History of Dilli Haat

Dilli Haat INA was constructed in the early 90s and was jointly formed by Delhi Tourism Department, Government of Delhi, Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. The other Dilli Haats were constructed in the early 21st century. Small developments like the construction of a food court, wheelchair access, a fully functional bathroom happened over the years.

Architecture of Dilli Haat INA

When you walk into Dilli Haat, you will be mesmerized to see an entire village like set up created using red stone and bricks. It is spread across 6 acres of land. The architecture is very common to the typical North Indian Style houses and also strikes a close resemblance to the bazaars of Jaipur. Each of these shops is formed in the shape of a small cottage with stone roof.

The items range from colourful Chikankari Kurtis to Kolhapuri Chappals and in all, it gives a very colourful, vibrant and ethnic vibe to the entire place. There are various flowers and shrubs that give it a very pleasant and harmonious look. There is also a small stage which is supported by a beautifully done graffiti wall and makes it a good spot to take photographs.

1. Shopping at Dilli Haat : Dilli Haat is every shopper’s paradise. There is so much that you can even be confused as to what to buy from Dilli Haat.

You can shop a range of items including but not limited to ethnic wear, shawls, jewellery, wall decor, ceramic and pottery crockery, furniture, lanterns, paintings and sculptures, antiques, organic food products, essential oils and so much more.

Since these handicraft items come directly from the craftsman, it not only ensures that the craftsman is getting paid better but you also get the product at a better price as compared to handicraft emporiums.

Do note that there is only one ATM at the entrance and the shopkeepers do not keep a card machine, so it is advisable to carry liquid cash.

2. Food Parade at Dilli Haat : See India get united with food stalls from different states of the country. If you are wondering what should you eat in Dilli Haat, we recommend ditching your regular staple and trying something which would be new for your palette. From Sikkim’s famous Momo to Nagaland’s Thukpa there is so much for you to taste and try.

Do not expect a luxurious restaurant, but rather a more comfortable and cosy outdoor environment.

3. Tarot Card Reading at Dilli Haat : There is a stall where you will usually find a professional tarot card reader who can predict your future and suggest you changes that you can make in your life accordingly.

4. Get Hand Mehendi and Hair Braided at Dilli Haat : This one is extremely famous with young girls and ladies. As soon as you enter the complex of Dilli Haat, you will find women sitting with threads, ready to braid your hair, or with their Mehendi cones to adorn your hand with beautiful designs.

5. Cultural Activities : One can be taken by surprise with various unplanned cultural activities happening at Dilli Haat such as a flash mob or a nukkad natak, most of which are trying to convey a social message.

1. Lodhi Garden : Located only 3 km from Dilli Haat is the Lodhi Garden. The park boasts of an open gym and a jogger’s track which makes exercising out in nature both peaceful and satisfying.

The garden also has the tomb of Mohammad Shah Sayyid. The ruins of the tomb are marvellous, to say the least. There is a tiny lake with swans and it is a sight to catch.

2. Sarojini Nagar Market : Located at a convenient distance of 2.5 km from Dilli Haat is the Sarojini Nagar Market which is famous amongst women for offering a great street shopping experience. From export surplus items to local shops, you will find it all. The price of clothes here start from as less as Rs.50 and can go up to Rs. 500 or more.

Sarojini Nagar is also a haven for street-style accessories like jhumkas, neckpieces, scarves and even footwears. One can also find beautiful and artistic home decor items. Bargaining is the key to shopping at Sarojini Nagar. If you are hungry, there are various eateries like Haldirams, McDonald's, Sagar Ratna, Cafe Coffee Day and many more.

3. Hauz Khas Village : The perfect place to take a stroll around nature, see deers, sit by the lake and catch picturesque images at the fort, and grab a bite to eat is Hauz Khas Village. It is located at a distance of 5 km from Dilli Haat. The village boasts of designer showrooms, antique shops, pubs, cafes and the Hauz Khas Fort .

The fort is very popular amongst college students for providing a splendid view of the lake and offering the perfect space for creativity to blossom. You will often find youth playing the guitar or trying their hands on the camera or friends simply sitting and having a great time.

4. Safdarjung Tomb : As the name suggests, this historical monument is the mausoleum of Nawab Safdarjung and is located only 1.5 km from Dilli Haat. It is constructed using sandstone and marble and has ornate carvings. The architecture is very similar to Humayun’s Tomb and often tourists get confused between the two.

The tomb is also surrounded by lush green gardens which makes it a perfect spot to relax for a while. It is also a photographer’s paradise to capture the Mughal Architecture.

There is lack of commercialisation here and you will hardly find any tourists flocking, unlike the more popular spots. This is what adds on to the beauty of this Mughal mausoleum.

5. India Gate : India Gate is a very popular tourist spot and is of great national importance since it stands as a war memorial for more than 70,000 soldiers who died during the First World War. The structure of India Gate is made using sandstone and it has the name of 13000+ soldiers inscribed on it.

There are lush green gardens, a children’s park and a War Memorial. You will also find various street vendors selling street food, tea, coffee, ice-cream, balloons and other toys. If you visit India Gate during the evening, you can see it lit up in the colours of the Indian National Flag. This place is sure to awaken your patriotic spirits.

Delhi got its third Dilli Haat on 13 July, 2014 as Dilli Haat at Janakpuri was inaugurated in a colorful ceremony by Sh. Parvesh Sahib Singh, Hon’ble MP. Sh. Jagdish Mukhi, Hon’ble MLA and Smt. Rajni Mamtani, Hon’ble Councilor graced the occasion with their presence. Ms. Rinku Dhugga, Secretary (Tourism), Govt. of Delhi, Dr. Puneet Kr. Goel, MD & CEO, DTTDC & Sh. Ravi Dadhich, General Manager DTTDC were also present among other dignitaries.

DHJP is more spacious than the other two Dilli Haats which are at INA and Pitampura. Dilli Haat, Janakpuri is spread over a sprawling area of 8.00 acres. This new venue showcases the country’s craft and cultural tradition, and is an open air shopper’s paradise which is a one stop destination for art, craft, music and food lovers. This Dilli Haat has been developed by Delhi Tourism at a cost of Rs. 120 Crore.

Dilli Haat has a provision of 100 Nos. of typical craft stalls, 74 Nos. open platform shops, 46 Nos. of A.C Shops. These stalls showcase ethnic and exotic products and materials exclusive to India. There are endless shopping opportunities for the visitors as it brings India’s old rural tradition of open market space to contemporary and modern Delhi.

Dilli Haat, Janakpuri  gives ample opportunity for food lovers to savor delectable lip smacking food as there are 14 Nos. of food stalls set up where one will be able to savor the flavors from across the country and 15 food stalls serving cuisines from around the world.

Architecture

A sprawling Exposition Hall spreading over 960 Sqm. has been set up at DilliHaat, Janakpuri where various exhibitions, seminars, events etc takes place and is available on rent for general public. The outer walls of the exposition halls is covered by creepers which will provide a green roof top.

Cost of ticket is Rs.20/- for adult and Children below 10 years entry free.

Open: DHJP would be open from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM(Jan to Dec)
