There’s an exhilarating freedom that comes with hitting the open road in the US in June, July, and August, no matter how many years it has been since you were in school and actually had an assigned summer break.

And, if you’re like a lot of us, summer vacation in the US often means heading to your family’s classic spot at least once (for us, that’s Atlantic Beach, NC and the surrounding area).

As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit over the summer in the USA.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible  things to do in Boston .

That being said, thanks to the city’s dense historic center and easy-to-access attractions along the Freedom Trail, spending even one day in Boston can be incredibly rewarding.

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite cities.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on  a whale-watching cruise .

Unsurprisingly, hiking here is the thing to do if you want the best views and animal sightings. The most recommended hikes in the park include Iceberg Lake, Redrock Falls, and Hidden Lake Trail.

Iceberg Lake, a 9-mile trail, is popular for a reason!

Not only will you be rewarded with the gorgeous azure Iceberg Lake at the end, but your chances of seeing bears along the trail are also pretty high (which is both terrifying and exciting).

Redrock Falls Trail is a nice easy stroll to some small falls you can dip your feet in, and if you want to extend it, continue along the Swiftcurrent Pass trail for more gorgeous vistas.

Hidden Lake Trail is a popular trail just behind the visitor center, offering beautiful views as well.

There are tons of waterfall stops, a stunning drive along Going-to-The-Sun Road, and more to enjoy during your time in Glacier.

The park is spread across nearly a million acres, and considering hiking is the best thing to do and where some of the most worth-it places to visit are, you’re going to need to spend your 5-7 days here to make your summer trip here worth it. 

One of the best tips is to make sure you’re choosing   where to stay in Glacier National Park   in advance, as places fill up quickly in summer.

If you happen to be visiting later in the year, do keep in mind some campsites, accommodations, and even Going-to-the-Sun Road close up for the season.

If you’re looking for an American summer vacation that includes breathtaking scenery, geothermal wonders, lots of wildlife, and remarkable attractions, look no further than a visit to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park.

These two national parks are located only a short distance apart and are a classic USA summer vacation.

In Yellowstone, you can’t miss Grand Prismatic Spring, Old Faithful Geyser, Upper and Lower Falls on the Yellowstone River, and Mammoth Hot Springs.

There are several iconic ‘iron rung’ hikes in Acadia – for part of the trails, you need to climb up iron rings embedded into the cliffs for part of them, as well as clamber along narrow ledges.

It can be a little scary, but the reward – spectacular views over the hills and surrounding islands – is well worth it. The most famous of these hikes is The Beehive, which is not to be missed.

Summer is also a great time for swimming in Acadia NP.

The only ocean beach, appropriately named Sand Beach, is chilly even in summer, but nearby Echo Lake has perfect temperatures for swimming.

There are also plenty of water sports, including kayaking and sailing, to enjoy.  Plus, summer is when puffins come to nearby islands to nest, and whales are often seen swimming in the surrounding seas.

June, July, and August are also perfect times for outdoor dining.

Don’t miss having popovers at Jordan Pond House! Tables are set up on the lawn, overlooking the beautiful Jordan Pond, and it’s a perfect way to while away a summer afternoon.

The national park is also laced with miles of historic carriage roads. Take a horse drawn carriage ride (only available in the warmer months) or rent a bike in nearby Bar Harbor and spend several hours cycling through the woods, cooling off in tiny streams along the way.

In Breckenridge, summer provides the opportunity to take the free BreckConnect gondola up to Peak 8, ride the alpine slide down the mountain, mine for gems, hike the many trails from town, discover the Breckenridge Troll, and  many other adventurous activities .

Check out Steamboat Springs for white water rafting, hot springs, and hiking to Fish Creek Falls.

Georgetown is also a great stop with its Georgetown Loop Railroad complete with outlaws, stunning views, and a silver mine tour.

No matter which mountain towns you choose to explore, the options are endless for a summer vacation in the Colorado Rockies!

If you’re looking for an offbeat getaway this summer, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota is a fantastic summer destination in the USA.

This wilderness area is wild and pristine and is perfect for anyone who loves an outdoor adventure and spending quality time in nature.

The Boundary Waters area is absolutely chock full of lakes, so visiting the Boundary Waters is a multi-day canoe trip filled with exploring forests, waterfalls, and, of course, beautiful lakes.

Most people spend several hours each day paddling across the lakes to reach their next campsite and portaging to cross between lakes.

Once you’re done canoeing, go swimming or cliff jumping, go fishing, explore the area (there are hikes and waterfalls you can climb), watch birds and wild animals, or just relax at your campsite.

Permits are required and limited in number, and campsites are very spread out, so you will hardly see another person while in the Boundary Waters.

The water is crystal clear and the views are incredible!

Thanks to its far north location, this trip can really only be done in summer, so put it on your calendar now!

Where to Stay in Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

• South Pier Inn: Settled right on the edge of Lake Superior this is a great waterfront base. Book a suite for lake views from your balcony.
• Sheraton Duluth Hotel: For a classic modern hotel with all the amenities this is a great option in the area. Every room has either city views or lake views, there is also an on-site fitness centre with a hot tub.

Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio

If you love the outdoors, Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio should definitely be on your radar this summer!

Located about an hour southeast of Columbus, Ohio, you’ll be able to unplug, immerse yourself in nature, and enjoy the warm, Midwest summer weather.

When visiting, you won’t want to miss the  hiking trails . Each trail is unique, with varying length and difficulty.

Some are even handicap accessible and pet friendly, so everyone can enjoy this beautiful area.

When you head out on your hike, you’ll soon feel like you were transported to a different world, as you’ll be surrounded by huge rock formations, towering trees, and lush greenery.

While Hocking Hills is known for the hiking trails, there are plenty of other fun things to do in the area to keep you busy.

You can visit the college campus of Ohio University, do a wine tasting at Hocking Hills Winery, check out a couple of the breweries nearby, enjoy some time at the spa, attend a blown glass workshop, or stargaze at the John Glenn Astronomy Park.

Lake Placid, New York

Sometimes forgotten about, tucked away in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, Lake Placid is a great destination for a USA summer vacation.

There are nearly endless outdoor activities and things to do in Lake Placid in summer , best experienced when the snow has finally melted from the high peaks.

You can climb to the top of Mount Marcy, the tallest point in the state of New York, or the 45 other 4,000+ footers in the Adirondack Mountains.

If this sounds too adventurous, you can still experience the views from a high peak by driving to the top of Whiteface Mountain.

Views from the access road are stunning, and there are plenty of pull-offs to stop and enjoy.

Once you reach the end of the road, you can enjoy the views from there or continue on a few hundred yards over uneven, rocky stairs to reach the actual summit.

Spend your days out chasing waterfalls, and evenings enjoying a delicious dinner by the lake on one of the outdoor restaurant patios. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and float the day away on the lake. 

Don’t forget to explore some of the historic Olympic sites from the 1980 games. Travel to the top of the ski jump ramp and see the views that jumpers have just before flying downhill, or try out the bobsled track experience.

The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail is the easiest way to see the stars—the path is wheelchair accessible)—but the real go-to is the strenuous Hot Springs Canyon Trail. It offers no shade, which means no interference in spotting shooting stars. True night in the summer doesn't start until 10 p.m. so you can camp in the park's backcountry with a permit if you're looking to rough it. "D.C. summers are famously hot and humid—the kind where shade doesn't help—so when I lived there, I liked to hop in the car and head for the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, to Shenandoah Park's Skyline Drive. In addition to cool, fresh air and open road known for its scenic overlooks, there are plenty of places to stop and hike or sightsee along the way (like Luray Caverns and Natural Bridge). Stretching from Front Royal, Virginia, south toward Waynesboro, you can drive the whole thing in four hours, though I'd make time for breaks. The path nearly overlaps with the Shenandoah Spirits Trail, a network of home-grown wineries, craft breweries, and distilleries perfect for a pit stop, sampling, and mountain views. “Despite how much modern society changes, Orcas pretty much stays the same. It's still hard to get to, which is why, even over a holiday weekend in summer, you’ll see only one or two other hikers on the trails and will have the rope swing at Mountain Lake to yourself. Days still revolve around hiking through old growth cedar forests, sea kayaking, swimming in lakes, going to the farmers' market in town, and eating some of the best local oysters, salmon, Dungeness crab, and spot prawns in the world. Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

“Unless you hit Auckland or Queenstown, crowds generally won't be an issue in New Zealand. Etosha National Park, Namibia

"It’s safari season . And while that means peak game-viewing across the continent as animals congregate around scarce watering holes, it also means that at some of the more popular parks can feel like you’re part of just another herd—one of jeeps. You should still bring an umbrella, but you’ll have a much better chance to sightsee in the sunlight. 

The famous Portland Rose Garden will also be in bloom during the summer months. As one of the city’s top attractions, you should plan to take some time strolling through the colorful array of flowers. Portland is called the City of Roses after all!

Portland is also know as one of the best food cities in the U.S.  

Portland’s famous foods  include everything from doughnuts to charcuterie to Thai food. And the best part is you don’t even have to break the bank. Many of the best specialties are affordable, some even come from food trucks. Mississippi Street is a great place to start. It has a lively food truck scene, delicious restaurants, local breweries, and fun boutiques. 

Portland is a very walkable city although it is quite spread out, so you may have some long walks between sights. Stay in the center of town at the Hyatt Centric Downtown Portland . It’s close the Pioneer Courthouse Square in the heart of the city and about 11 miles from Portland International Airport.

2. North Bend, Washington

North Bend, WA is a charming town located in the Pacific Northwest, approximately 30 miles east of Seattle. It sits at the base of the Cascade foothills and is surrounded by beautiful forests, mountains and rivers. You can reach North Bend by car, 35 miles east of Sea-Tac Airport.

The mild weather during summer provides an ideal opportunity for a wide range of outdoor activities, making it the perfect summer destination. North Bend offers  something for everyone , whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure, relaxing in the sun, or history. With many hiking trails, mountain biking routes, fishing spots, and camping sites, you’ll find no shortage of things to do. There are several great parks for children as well, and berry picking towards the end of summer.

North Bend is also a very popular place for sightseeing and shopping. It’s known as the filming location for the TV series Twin Peaks : The town served as the primary filming location for the popular TV series Twin Peaks in the early 1990s. Many fans of the show still visit North Bend to see the various filming locations.

Other activities include visiting the Northwest Railway Museum, wine tasting and shopping at the local outlet mall.

North Bend is known for its small town feel, local culture and beautiful natural surroundings, with the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Snoqualmie River running through town. 3. Seattle, Washington

Seattle, the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, offers an excellent blend of urban and outdoor attractions.  It boasts a rich cultural scene and a bustling centre with an array of museums, restaurants, and shopping.

Seattle’s weather is known for its rain, but in summer you’ll experience comfortable temperatures averaging 72°F with 10 hours of sunshine a day.  It’s a haven for visitors in summer; but many head to the waterfront, the islands in Puget Sound or the Cascades, making the city feel less crowded.

4. Boulder, Colorado

One of the best places to visit in the summer is Boulder, Colorado, a small city and college town nestled into the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. Boulder is known for its fabulous pedestrian walking mall, Pearl Street, as well as its eccentric locals who love the outdoors.

Summertime is the perfect time to visit Boulder because the city feels alive and active during the summer, with activities like hiking, river tubing down the Boulder Creek, and cycling.

If you choose a hotel near Pearl Street , you’ll have access to several trails within walking distance of your hotel. You can walk through Chautauqua State Park or venture up nearby Sanitas. 5. Breckenridge, Colorado

Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge, Colorado, is widely known as a popular winter destination with its world-class skiing and snowboarding opportunities. 7. Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe is renowned as one of the most beautiful alpine lakes. Crystal clear waters surrounded by enormous boulders and towering, ancient trees make for one of the best places to visit in the USA in summer. 

The beauty of Lake Tahoe and the opportunity to reconnect with nature in such an awe-inspiring setting is often reason enough to pull visitors in. But for the more adventurous types, world-class hiking, biking, boating and kayaking are also on the docket. 

Reno-Tahoe International Airport is the closest airport to Lake Tahoe and is about a 45 minute drive to the water’s edge. High temperatures fluctuate throughout the 70s during the summer and the lows fall to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

8. Napa, California

Napa is great to visit in the summer when the weather is beautiful and there is very little chance of rain. This means that it is the best time to enjoy the outdoor activities in the area such as hot air ballooning, picnics and exploring the vineyards.

Everyone comes to Napa to enjoy the wine and vineyards. Some of the most interesting estates to visit both for their tours but also the amazing buildings are Domain Carneros which looks like a French Chateaux, Darioush which would not look out of place in Athens, or Castello di Amorosa, which looks like a Tuscan castle. For a more private experience go to the O’Brien Estate.

Another great way to enjoy the scenery in Napa is on a picnic. Most estates require advance reservations and either charge a fee that will go towards any bottle you buy or require you to also do a tasting. Two of the best places to go for a picnic are at Rutherford Hill or Clos du Val. Some estates allow you to bring your own food but wine must be bought at the vineyard.

In Napa, wine might be what people think of first, but food comes a close second. With several Michelin starred restaurants you can be guaranteed to eat well.  

The closest larger towns to Napa are San Francisco, which is an hour and 15 minutes by car, and San Jose, which is 2 hours away. A car is the easiest way to get around Napa. The only problem is driving and wine tastings don’t mix so luckily there are many private tours as well as an open air wine trolley to take you around.

For a luxury weekend you will never forget a stay at Auberge de Soleil . A more budget friendly option in the centre of Napa is Churchill Manor .

9. San Francisco, California

For a great place to visit in the US during summer head over to beautiful San Francisco, CA!

San Francisco is a perfect place to visit in the summer as it frequently has sunny days and temperatures that are mostly warm but still comfortable. There’s also no shortage of activities to do in San Francisco and summer is the perfect time for so many of them!

Enjoy the beauty of outdoor spaces such as Golden Gate Park and the Palace of Fine Arts. Take a stroll and bring your camera along to capture some views.

Swing by Pier 39 for some good eats, beautiful views, souvenir shopping, and seal watching.

Take a ride on a cable car. San Francisco is known for its hilly streets and the cable ways that run through them. A ride on a cable car is a quintessential San Francisco experience!

No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge. Head to the Golden Gate View Point for one of the best and most iconic views of it.

10. Big Sur, California

If you’re looking for the perfect summer getaway, Big Sur is an excellent destination. This beautiful stretch of the central California coast has amazing views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and tall redwood forests.

In the summer, you can go hiking on many different routes, such as the well-known McWay Falls Trail or the lesser-known Pfeiffer Falls Trail. The Pacific Coast Highway is also perfect for a scenic drive, with several beautiful beaches and lookouts to stop at and enjoy. Bixby Bridge is one of the more famous ones you’ll recognize from movies.

You can’t go wrong with the Ventana Big Sur  if you’re looking for a place to stay in Big Sur. Yoga lessons, wine tastings, and guided hikes are just a few of the activities available at this five-star resort with panoramic views of the Pacific.

You can also stay at the  Big Sur Campsite and Cabins if you want to be a bit more outdoorsy. Either is a great choice to stay at during a  Los Angeles to Yosemite road trip .

To get to Big Sur, you can fly into either San Francisco International Airport or Los Angeles International Airport and rent a car to do the drive.

11. Carlsbad, California

Known for its almost year-round balmy temperatures, Carlsbad is the perfect summer destination. During the summer season, visitors can expect average high temperatures of 73°F and average low temperatures of 63°F. With such pleasant weather conditions, it’s no wonder that visitors are drawn to this coastal city in the heat of summer! Furthermore, there are lots of activities to do around the little beach town.

For example, head to any one of the gorgeous beaches in Carlsbad to cool off in the refreshing waters and enjoy some sunshine. This is also the perfect time to learn to surf since the waves tend to be tamer during the summertime.

Afterward, foray into the coastal town’s fantastic culinary scene by grabbing a tasty California burrito or some tacos! Or, if hiking is more your thing, then you can check out the Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Trail, which is an easy 3.4-mile hike that takes you through the protected wetland habitat.

To get to Carlsbad, you can drive down from Los Angeles or fly into San Diego International Airport and take a 40-minute drive up to Carlsbad. 12. San Diego, California

For near-perfect summer weather, visit San Diego on California’s coast. This city is known for it’s variety of activities like SeaWorld, the USS Midway Museum, and Balboa Park with a number of museums to check out.

San Diego also has some of the best food in the US where they’re famous for their tacos and seafood…and seafood tacos! Try the famous Tacos El Gordo, which has expanded to Las Vegas, or the more local favorite, Roberto’s. For seafood, you can’t go wrong at Lou and Mickey’s in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Don’t miss my favorite, Cafe 222, which serves up the best waffles I’ve ever had!

Other fun things to do include food tours of the Gaslamp Quarter or Little Italy, learning about the spooky history of San Diego (one of the most haunted houses in the US is located in San Diego), and exploring the Point Loma Tide Pools.

For places to stay, a budget option in a great location is the Horton Grand Hotel . A more luxury option along the marina is the Manchester Grand Hyatt with a lovely adults only pool!

13. Flagstaff, Arizona

Another great summer destination is Flagstaff, Arizona . What’s normally a college town, clears out in the summer as students go back home for their summer break. That leaves Flagstaff perfect for your getaway. Plus, it’s a great stopover point on an Arizona to Utah road trip !

Typically, Flagstaff is a stopover or basecamp for those visiting the national parks in northern Arizona including the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks. However, Flagstaff deserves your attention on its own.

First of all, Flagstaff is the first ever dark sky city so you’ll find some of the best stargazing in Flagstaff . Check out Buffalo Park for unobstructed views of the night sky, or visit Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered, to use their telescopes!

Additionally, Flagstaff has great hiking at Humphrey’s Peak, Lockett Meadow, and around Arizona Snowbowl.

Be sure to explore the cute shops downtown and try the food and drinks at Lumberyard as well as the pizza from NiMarco’s. They’re both delicious!

Flagstaff has no shortage of hotels. The Drury Inn and Suites is in a central location near the Northern Arizona University campus and within a mile to downtown. Alternatively, right in downtown the Bespoke Inn is highly rated!

14. Austin, Texas

Austin, TX is always a vibrant city to visit. During the summers, many University of Texas students have returned home, allowing visitors to see all the capital of Texas has to offer!

The largest urban colony of Mexican free-tailed bats makes Austin their home each summer, living under the Congress Avenue Bridge as it crosses Lady Bird Lake south of downtown. Every evening, around sunset, the bats fly out from under the bridge – in what appears to be a moving black cloud – on their way to eat 3000-5000 pounds of insects per bat.

Zilker Park, 2 miles southwest of downtown Austin, offers a variety of activities and attractions – sculpture garden, botanical garden, kayak, canoe, and stand up paddle board rentals, as well as the very popular Barton Springs Pool. The pool is open from 8:00AM to 10:00PM and offers refreshingly 68-70 degree spring fed waters.  

Thursdays through Sunday during July and August, the Zilker Hillside Theater, just to the west of Barton Springs  Pool, hosts the annual Zilker Summer Musical .

Each summer, the historic Paramount Theater on Congress Avenue presents its annual Classic Film Series, showcasing movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood to more recent releases. Fun fact about the Paramount Theater – there is a small hole in the ceiling of the auditorium and to the left of the painting from a trick performed by Harry Houdini in 1916.

The hotels in downtown Austin , especially along and near Congress Avenue, allow for convenient access to many attractions and restaurants.  The nearest airport is Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), located approximately 7 miles southeast of downtown Austin.

Where to Visit in the East in Summer

15. bar harbor, maine.

The quaint New England village of Bar Harbor, sitting in Northeastern Maine and just outside of Acadia National Park, is one of the best summer destinations in the US. The area is full of history, culture, and outdoor adventure with a small-town feel.

Summertime brings the warmest weather and full access to area attractions, including dining and shopping options that are closed during other times of the year. It is also the best time to see the area’s wildlife, including the iconic puffins.

While in Bar Harbor, spend some time strolling the downtown streets for local shops and restaurants, relax in the village green, enjoy wine tasting and locally made chocolate at Bar Harbor Cellars winery, enjoy a culinary walking tour, or get out on the water with a  Puffin and Lighthouse Cruise .

Bar Harbor sits within minutes of Acadia National Park, a must visit while in the area. In Acadia National Park you can drive the 27 mile park loop drive, stand atop Cadillac Mountain, go for a hike, go for a swim at Sand Beach, and hear the thunderous crashing of the waves at Thunder Hole.

For accommodations, the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Event Center has a private beach, indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, and is in close proximity to Acadia National Park. Visitors can also opt to take advantage of the area’s wilderness and go camping in Acadia National Park.

The best way to get to Bar Harbor is by car. Bar Harbor is about two and a half hours outside of Portland, Maine and about 4 hours outside of Boston. The nearest large airport is in Bangor, about an hour outside of Bar Harbor.

16. Stonington, Maine

Stonington, Maine  is a charming coastal town that makes for a perfect summer vacation spot a bit off the beaten path. Located on Deer Isle, it is surrounded by absolutely stunning views, a rocky coastline, and lush mossy forests. Plus, it has all the lobster you could possibly wish for!

Due to its location, Stonington benefits from the ocean breeze on hot summer days. The ocean is always there waiting to cool visitors off with a dip anytime they wish! People can explore the area on foot or by bike. Or, for those who want to get out on the water, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and kayaking. 

Stonington is home to several gorgeous nature preserves, including the Barred Island Preserve and Crockett Cove Woods, which offer visitors a chance to see a variety of ecosystems near the ocean. A boat ride out to Isle au Haut, part of Acadia National Park, is a popular day trip option.

This area also has a vibrant arts community! There are numerous galleries showcasing the work of local artists. Stonington’s Opera House hosts terrific events throughout the season, including music and live performances. 

During the summer, Stonington is a foodie’s paradise that is not to be overlooked. Visitors can feast on fresh lobster, clams, and oysters, as well as locally sourced produce. The Stonington Farmers Market is a great place to sample local food and beverages, including fresh baked goods and artisanal cheeses.

The town of Stonington is most easily reached from Bangor, ME which also has an international airport. The drive takes about 1.5 hours from there.

Once in Stonington, a popular place to stay is the Inn on the Harbor , right on Main Street in the heart of the town. It has exceptional views from the deck as it is right on the waterfront.

17. Portland, Maine

Portland is located on the coast of Maine, with easy access to some of the best beaches in New England. In the summer, Portland’s cobbled streets become alive with outdoor activities. Visitors can take a stroll through one of the city’s historic neighborhoods or explore its many food, music, and art festivals.

One of the best ways to see the charm of Portland’s Old Port and the wharf is to take a walking tour . You will learn about the city’s history, discover hidden gems, and take in the sights of some of its most iconic buildings.

18. Burlington, Vermont

Burlington, Vermont is one place that is at its very best in the summertime. And it makes for a delightful getaway.

Burlington is the biggest city in the tiny state of Vermont, but if definitely doesn’t feel like a big city. Small town, local charm abounds in this hip and artsy destination. 

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a chain in this city. Burlington loves its local artists and local businesses. In the summer months, you can really dive into the local scene by spending time at the Saturday Farmer’s Market located downtown. You can browse the wares and produce of Vermonters at this popular and busy market. You’ll definitely leave with some delicious pastries, robust veggies, and fresh-cut flowers.

Summer weather in VT is gorgeous, with hot sunny days and cool evenings. Summer is also the best in Burlington because of its proximity to the lake. Burlington is right on Lake Champlain, a large and beautiful lake that is bordered by mountains. It truly is breathtaking (and you’ll want to catch the sunset over the lake from the waterfront each evening). But it also offers plenty of opportunity for adventure and leisure. Visitors can rent stand up paddleboards or kayaks and head out for some exploring. Or, you can hop aboard a ferry or sailboat for some different lake experiences. The absolute best summer destination in New England for a beach vacation is  Cape Cod  in Massachusetts! 21. Lake Placid, New York

If you’re looking for a destination that offers breathtaking natural beauty, a ton of outdoor activities, and a charming small-town vibe, look no further than Lake Placid, New York.

Situated in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid is located approximately 120 miles (193 km) north of Albany, and 280 miles (450 km) northwest of New York City. New York City is one of the best places to visit in the United States during summer. If you’re looking for somewhere less crowded to visit this summer, than a trip to Minneapolis will be perfect for you! This metro city in southern Minnesota offers some of the best activities to enjoy the warm weather and short summer months!

The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is right within the city, so you won’t have to go far after arriving via plane. And once you’ve arrived, public transportation and driving are made easy.

Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and you’ll get to experience some of those amazing lakes right in the city. From Lake Harriet to Bde Maka Ska and Lake Nokomis, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Minnesota’s waterways. From kayaking and paddleboarding to boating and fishing, there are so many ways to enjoy the water.

Another great way to enjoy summer in Minneapolis is to go out camping or stay at one of the many resorts. There are many resorts near Minneapolis that make for the perfect escape from real life. You can enjoy things like sitting around a campfire or boating at the resort.

There are also many great hikes within the Twin Cities that are easily accessible and put you into nature without having to drive too far.

25. Mackinac Island, Michigan

With most businesses closed during the winter months, summer is the best time to visit Mackinac Island, Michigan.

Situated on Lake Huron, Mackinac Island is surrounded by crystal clear blue waters. During the summer months, you can expect the average high temperature to be in the low to mid-70s, making it perfect for all the outdoor activities the island has to offer.

In early June, Mackinac Island hosts the Lilac Festival, which also brings more crowds.  If you want to avoid crowds, schedule your trip around this festival and plan to stay  on the island . Exploring the island first thing in the morning or later in the evening will make you feel like you have the whole island to yourself since many tourists only come to the island as a day trip.

During your time on the island, make sure to stop at one of the many fudge shops, enjoy lunch on the lake at Pink Pony, visit (or even stay at!) the Grand Hotel , enjoy the beautiful views from Arch Rock, and explore Fort Mackinac.

When you visit, it will feel like you have stepped back in time, as cars are not allowed on the island. You will have to take a ferry to get to the island. And once you’re there, you will get around by bicycle, by foot, or by horse-drawn carriage.

While there is an airport on Mackinac Island, no major airlines fly into that airport.  Instead, you will have to fly into a nearby airport and rent a car or take a shuttle to the ferry dock. The nearest major airports are in Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Detroit, which are each 3-4 hours away.

26. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the perfect summertime travel destination in the United States. Enjoy getting out into nature in the warm summer weather and participate in fun festivals like GermanFest, one of the largest in the United States! Summertime also brings the monthly Milwaukee Night Markets, a fun way to experience downtown with local artists, vendors, and performers.

One of the biggest reasons to visit Milwaukee in the summer is the enormous music festival, SummerFest. SummerFest is held over the course of three weekends at the end of June and beginning of July. With hundreds of bands performing, this musical extravaganza is not to be missed!

Chicago is a vibrant city with plenty to offer visitors, especially during the summer months.

28. virginia beach, virginia.

Virginia Beach is a summer vacation destination that mesmerizes with a three-mile boardwalk, surfing waves, vibrant murals, and plenty to do outside, like horseback riding on the beach and paddling waterways in search of river otters and bottlenose dolphins.

Make the 34-foot-tall King Neptune statue at the 31st Street beach entrance your first stop in Virginia Beach. Selfies with this underwater god are practically mandatory. Steps off the beach, explore the ViBe Creative District for colorful murals, like the “Greetings from Virginia Beach” mural on 19th Street. Stop in Lolly’s Creamery for a scoop of Cookie Monster ice cream.

At First Landing State Park, hike the easy  Bald Cypress Trail , which guides visitors across a freshwater swamp with curious bald cypress trees. It’s one of the best hikes in Virginia. Bring your bikes too to pedal along the six-mile Cape Henry Trail at this state park.

Kids can burn off energy on slides and climbing structures at the 15,000-square-foot Grommet Island Beach Park. This accessible playground welcomes children and families of all abilities. It’s off the boardwalk at the 2nd Street entrance. Mount Trashmore is a wonderful stop to fly a kite. Uniquely, this city park was once an abandoned landfill.

Stay the night at the Holiday Inn & Suites Virginia Beach-North Beach . There’s a splash lagoon, an outdoor pool and a 48-seat movie theatre at this oceanfront hotel. The closest airport is less than 25 minutes away – Norfolk International Airport in Norfolk, Virginia. It’s also an easy drive from major cities, including Washington, DC (3.5 hours) and Raleigh, North Carolina (3 hours).

29. North Georgia mountains, Georgia

While Georgia summers are known for being hot, humid, and buggy, there’s one underrated area of Georgia that makes for the perfect summer getaway – the North Georgia mountains. This region has hiking, wineries, waterfalls, and charming towns to explore.

Visit Hele n, Georgia , a Bavarian mountain town with river tubing, authentic German eats, and lots of craft beer. The Heidi Motel is one of the best budget-friendly options in Helen complete with a windmill!

On the other side of Georgia, another mountain town to explore is that of Lookout Mountain. This small mountain is adjacent to Chattanooga, Tennessee but has it’s own attractions nearby that make it worth a visit. For example, you can go hang-gliding, hike Lula Falls, or visit the uniquely weird Rock City Gardens complete with some stellar mountain views…and gnomes and fairies on display.

Near Lookout Mountain, I recommend staying at one of the best Airbnbs in Georgia – either Hagrid’s Hut, a Hogwarts common room, or an Indiana Jones-inspired hideaway.

To get to the north Georgia mountains, you’ll need a car and you can easily drive 2 hours from Atlanta to get there.

30. 30a, Florida

One of the best summer destinations to visit is  30A in Florida, also known as South Walton . Located in the Northwest of the state, along the Panhandle, the area is made up of 26 miles of stunning white beaches, split into 16 diverse neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is catered for a different audience, for example Watercolor Beach is perfect for families, Rosemary Beach is popular amongst couples and Grayton Beach is fantastic for pet friendly travel.

Summer has guaranteed good weather, so its a great time to take advantage of all the outdoor activities on offer from stand up paddle boarding along the coastal dune lakes, to cycling along the Timpoochee Trail, stargazing on the beach, scuba diving to the underwater sculpture museum, and hiking in Point Washington State Forest.

There are also lots of indoor things to do such as cocktail making classes at the local vodka distillery, boutique shopping, and visiting the art galleries of local artists such as the famous Justin Gaffrey.

The closest airport to 30A is called Northwest Florida Beaches International airport and is located in Panama City Beach just 30 minutes drive away.

There are several great places to stay in 30A including Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort which has luxury condos, hotel rooms and villas, so every budget and group size is catered for.

If you’re looking for a more romantic option, The Pearl Hotel in Rosemary Beach is the only adults-only hotel in South Walton. It has a luxury spa, complimentary bicycles and a rooftop pool, so its easy to see why it was voted the “Most Romantic Hotel in Florida”.

31. South Beach, Florida

If you’re looking for a great nightlife scene, amazing food, and beautiful beaches, South Beach in Florida is a great option for summer travelers. Located in the southern part of Miami Beach, you can get to South Beach easily using public transportation from MIA airport.

While there are a lot of resorts and hotels along the coast, Hotel Breakwater is located just steps from the beach and central to a ton of restaurants. They have free bikes to rent, free beach gear, and free water bottles!

There is a lot to do in South Beach besides lounging at the beach (although that’s a great option too). Check out the Art Deco architecture on a walking tour and complement that with a visit to the Art Deco Museum. For the adults, visit the World Erotic Art Museum, which has art pieces about exactly what you’d expect.

The restaurants are wonderful in South Beach. Visit Rosetta Bakery for the most delicious sandwiches that you can easily take to go to the beach. For an upscale dining experience, make reservations at the restaurant at the Versace Mansion. It’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity!

South Beach isn’t the cheapest destination, but you can save in South Beach with a few tips including double checking your bill for already included gratuity.

National Parks to Visit in the Summer in the US

32. shenandoah national park, virginia.

Look no further than Shenandoah National Park for the perfect summer vacation! 

Located only 75 miles from Washington, D.C., this national park is easy to get to but impossible to forget. 

Summer is the perfect time to explore the park, thanks to the beautiful, moderate weather that this region gets May-August. 

Hike to one of the many waterfalls inside the park. Dark Hollow Falls Trail is one of the shortest waterfall hikes and is near to Big Meadows Visitor Center. Challenge yourself with the Overlook Falls Trail, which is longer — but also takes you past the perfect swimming hole. 

Challenge yourself by attempting to scale Old Rag, considered the most difficult hike in the park. Note that you will need to reserve a day pass for your Old Rag hike in addition to your park entrance ticket.

Summer at the park is packed with activities from guided horseback riding tours to wilderness survival classes for teens and adults. 

Rangers offer free walks from both visitors centers each day so visitors can get a professional look at the flowers, animals, and ecosystems that make up the park.

Don’t forget to spend some time meandering down Skyline Drive, ensuring that you stop at several overlooks to get new perspective on the park.

If you’re visiting  Shenandoah National Park with kids , complete the free Junior Ranger program when you stop by one of the 2 visitor centers. 

End your vacation days by looking up at the stars, which are unbelievably bright compared to other areas on the East Coast. A Night Sky Festival is held each summer so visitors can learn even more about this park after dark.

Camping is popular in national parks, but there are a number of hotels nearby. To get to Shenandoah National Park, driving is necessary as the closest airport is Washington DC, which is an hour and a half away.

33. Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is one of the most unique and beautiful National Parks in the United States, and summer is the best time to visit. This is because this is when the weather conditions are ideal, and all areas of the park are open.

What sets Olympic National Park apart is that it boasts multiple distinct ecosystems within one park – majestic mountains, glacial lakes, temperate rainforests, alpine forests, and wild coastline. Summer is the best time to see and experience all that the park has to offer.

Some of its highlights include the mountains of Hurricane Ridge, the Hoh Rainforest and the Hall of Mosses, Lake Crescent, Sol Duc Falls, Marymere Falls, and the La Push beaches. 

Summer is the best time of year to go hiking in the park – some of its most popular include Hurricane Hill (3.5 miles, 700 feet elevation gain) and Mount Storm King (4 miles, 1700 feet elevation gain). It’s also the best time to be out on the water at Lake Crescent and go kayaking, paddleboarding, or even jump in the lake (the water is still pretty cold though).

The nearest airport is in Seattle, about 3.5 hours away. You can also opt to come from Vancouver, or even take the ferry from Victoria. 

The park is pretty spread out, so split up your accommodations based on your itinerary. It is recommended to spend the night in Port Angeles when exploring the northern end of the park, and then in Forks when exploring the western and southern sides.

There are lots of things to do on Maui and one of the best ways to enjoy the island is to go snorkeling. Snorkeling is a great activity for all ages and fitness levels and it’s best enjoyed in the summertime when big waves are absent. Parasailing and jet skiing is another summertime only activity as they run opposite of whale season.

If you happen to be traveling to Maui in July don’t miss upcountry’s Makawao Rodeo or the 4th of July in Lahaina where the town sets fireworks off a barge in the water.

One of the  best places to stay in Maui  is the Andaz Resort in Wailea.  Located on the southern part of Maui, this hotel has four infinity pools and luxurious villas. Staying in this area of Maui puts you in prime location to explore other parts of the island.

Chances are, you’ll arrive on Maui by plane. Kahului Airport (OGG) is the only one major airport which has many direct flights to and from the United States mainland. Spend your days basking in the sun and your nights sipping mai tais as the sun sinks below the horizon. Summertime never felt so good.

37. Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is one of the best places in the US to plan a summer vacation. With its beautiful landscape, incredible weather, and  plenty of amazing activities  to fill the day, it is sure to be a summer trip to remember.

While summer does admittedly draw larger crowds, it is also the best time to visit Kauai’s magical North Shore. In winter and often shoulder seasons, the surf is too rough and the weather too rainy on the north side of the island to enjoy its beautiful beaches to their fullest.

Be sure to reserve entry passes in advance to Haena State Park to hike a section of the Kalalau Trail. The first mile will reward hikers with the most beautiful views of the Na Pali coastline. Another way to experience the coastline is from the water. Summer is the best season for a catamaran sail on this side of the island as well due to the calmer waters.

Kauai’s North Shore beaches are stunningly beautiful, and each offers incredible things to do. Head to Tunnels Beach for snorkeling and incredible sunset views. Hanalei Bay is a great spot for surfing lessons and sunset on the pier. Anini Beach is perfect for families with its long stretch of sand, great snorkeling, and frequent sea turtle sightings.

Choose a day or two to drive to the east and south shores to bike the Coconut Coast bike path in Kapaa, visit Poipu Beach, hike in Waimea Canyon, and kayak to Secret Falls. If a rainy day is expected on the North Shore, travelers are likely to find sun on the other side of the island!

For a summer vacation, lodging in Hanalei or Princeville is recommended to make the most of the incredible, lush scenery. Hanalei Bay Resort and Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas are both great options for beautiful rooms, scenic landscaping, and resort amenities.

Visitors will want to fly into Lihue Airport with a likely layover in Honolulu. A car rental is highly recommended to easily travel the island and explore.

38. lake of the ozarks, missouri.

Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri is the perfect summer destination for families. The lake is 92 miles long with over 1,150 miles of shoreline and 55,000 acres of surface area. This means no matter what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for, Lake of the Ozarks has it. You can choose quiet coves, busy party spots, or something in between. 

One of the most popular areas is Osage Beach, approximately a three-hour drive from either St. Louis or Kansas City. Here you’ll find an assortment of lodging options , as well as restaurants, boat rentals, and activities such as golfing, fishing, parasailing, and more.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back atmosphere, head down to Ha Ha Tonka State Park in the far southern portion of the lake. Besides its stunning scenery, the park features cool natural springs and plenty of caves and trails to explore.

While you’re in the area, check out the Ozarks Amphitheater for a summer concert. They have an impressive lineup of artists every summer.

For a quiet getaway, you’ll find a variety of vacation rentals all around the lake. A cabin on a peaceful cove near the town of Laurie is a great way to escape the craziness of the city.

Summer is by far the best time to visit Lake of the Ozarks. As the weather gets hot, the lake becomes the perfect temperature for swimming. You can spend all day in and on the water. In the evenings relax by the lake and watch as the fireflies start lighting up. 

Or for something more upbeat you won’t have to look far to find a bar with live music and dancing. No matter what you choose, Lake of the Ozarks will provide you with an unforgettable summer getaway.

I have always wanted to visit Mackinac Island – one of these summers, I will finally make it there. This summer, I am visiting Panama City Beach and Maui, so I was really happy to see both of those locations on this list. Great roundup!

Ogunquit, Maine

Ogunquit in southern Maine is not only home to the state’s most beautiful beach, but it’s also one of the  best beach towns in New England  to explore. This small coastal town packs a punch when it comes to charm and gorgeous scenery, and also offers so much to do for everyone, including boat tours, fun shopping, and wonderful restaurants.

If you’re looking to head to the beach, you can walk to Ogunquit Beach from most places in town. This stretch of shoreline is about 3 miles long and has soft, pristine sand to play in. When you’re not at the beach, you definitely can’t miss walking Marginal Way, which is a paved pedestrian path that follows the dramatic rocky coastline and connects Ogunquit’s downtown to a cute little harbor called Perkins Cove (where most boat tours and sailing charters depart).

Since you’re in New England, you can’t leave Ogunquit without trying a real Maine lobster roll! The best ones in town can be found at Footbridge Lobster and Lobster Shack. For a memorable waterfront dining experience, be sure to book a table at Ogunquit Beach Lobster House. 

Big Sur, California

The magnificent Highway 1 / Pacific Coast Highway scenic drive through Big Sur is one of the world’s most famous road trips and has been featured in countless movies, TV shows, music videos, and, of course, billions of Instagram and Tik Tok posts. With sheer cliffs, majestic waterfalls, classic bridges, and spectacular sunsets, Big Sur offers several ooh and ahh moments during every one of its 90-plus miles. 

The National Scenic Byway Foundation has named 57 All-American Roads and Big Sur has TWO of them. Convenient for us is that they connect to each other. 

The 72-mile northern portion, from Carmel south to Ragged Point Vista, is called the Big Sur Coast Highway and is one of the top  things to do in Monterey, California . It connects to the San Luis Obispo North Coast Byway, which runs from Ragged Point Vista south to Morro Bay. Big Sur highlights include Bixby Creek Bridge, Rocky Creek Bridge, Nepenthe, Rocky Point, Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur village, McWay Falls, and Point Lobos (which was called the “greatest meeting of land and water in the world”). But there are dozens of incredible viewpoints along the way so allow several hours to drive Big Sur. Look for animals in the water, such as sea otters, seals, and whales. And even in the summer, bring a sweatshirt or jacket. Yes, it can be chilly. Even in the summer.

San Diego, California

The California beach town is known for its balmy, salty air and cooler temperatures relative to most areas in California. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Summer is one of the best times to  visit Shenandoah National Park in Virginia . A lush canopy of trees and higher elevations combine to provide a comfortable setting for great hikes, stunning views, and fun Ranger-led activities. The park is a popular getaway (or quick day trip) from steamy Washington DC, just 2 hours away. All Shenandoah Park facilities are open in the summer, so visitors can learn, dine, and stay without leaving the park boundaries. For example, both Skyland Lodge and Big Meadows Lodge offer take-out and sit-down dining as well as a variety of hotel rooms and cabins. In addition, the park’s campgrounds put outdoor lovers close to excellent hikes including miles of the Appalachian Trail. When summer weather gets hot and humid, there are fun places to cool down a short hike away. The Rose River Trail is one popular hike with swimming holes and cascades. Or get even cooler at nearby Luray Caverns, which is 54 degrees all year round.

Black Hills of South Dakota

The  Black Hills of South Dakota  is an incredible destination for a summer getaway. This region offers stunning landscapes and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. From hiking on trails through towering forests to exploring iconic sites such as Mount Rushmore, there are plenty of things to do and areas to explore to keep you busy.

There are many amazing attractions that can be found throughout the Black Hills area. One highlight is Custer State Park which features Sylvan Lake, iconic highways, and plenty of hiking trails. The Black Hills area is also home to numerous National Park sites including Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument. If you are willing to drive a little further, Badlands National Park and Devils Tower National Monument are both worth visiting. In the Black Hills, you can take your pick of amazing places to visit. 

Napa Valley, California

Located in northern California wine country,  Napa Valley  is famously known for its rolling hills of vineyards, warm sunny days, exquisite wine, and thriving culinary scene. With its perfect summer weather and abundant outdoor activities, Napa has become one of the top destinations to visit during the summer months. The summer brings lots of fun festivals and events to wine country, including the popular music festival BottleRock and harvest season. Harvest season, or crush season, begins in August and is one of the best times of year in Napa.

Napa Valley has over 400 amazing wineries to choose from. Start your day of wine tasting with bubbles at the French-inspired chateau Domaine Carneros. Or explore the unique wine caves at Piazza Del Dotto and afterward enjoy their yummy brick oven sourdough pizzas with your wine tasting. In addition to wine, Napa Valley also offers a plethora of outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking the Vine Trail, kayaking the Napa River, and shopping in the charming downtown areas. If you prefer to get some R&R, plan a spa day at one of the many luxurious hot springs resorts in Calistoga.

Lancaster, Pennsylvania

One of the best places to spend summer is  Lancaster, Pennsylvania . It’s a great city in Lancaster County with a lot of things to do, many of which will make you feel like you’ve gone back in time.

A favorite spot to visit in Lancaster is the Lancaster Central Market. Established in 1730, it’s the country’s oldest continuously operated public farmer’s market. There are over 60 local vendors, and you can find all kinds of food and household items. Just be sure to time your visit right; the market is open Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

History buffs should also visit Historic Rock Ford. The mansion once belonged to Revolutionary War General Edward Hand. There are guided tours and tickets including admission to the nearby John J. Snyder, Jr. Gallery, which is housed in a re-constructed 18th-century bank barn. Something we found interesting is that the kitchen is still used and every third Sunday of the month, food is prepared using traditional methods of the time.

Lancaster has a lot of great cafes and restaurants in town. Two we recommend are Lancaster Brewing Company and Prince Street Café. Lancaster Brewing Company has been operating since 1995. They have produced over 22 different craft beers and won many awards, including medals at the 2013 World Beer Championship. Coffee connoisseurs will love Prince Street Café. They offer coffees, teas, and smoothies, as well as some light breakfast dishes.

The Rocky Mountains, Colorado

The Colorado Rocky Mountains are the perfect place to spend the summer due to the gorgeous weather, incredible views, and so many things to do. Rocky Mountain National Park is located in the charming town in Estes Park, just north of Denver. With cute ice cream shops, beautiful accommodations, boutique shopping, and tasty restaurants, Estes Park is the perfect home base for exploring the mountains. With temperatures in the 70s (F) and refreshing afternoon rains, the Colorado Rockies provide a wonderful respite from high temperatures in other areas during the summer months.

Easy access to the park’s entrance will leave visitors with plenty of time to discover all that the park has to offer. Beautiful, easy hikes like Bear Lake, Emerald Lake, and Alberta Falls are must-do items on every  Rocky Mountain National Park itinerary . Serious hikers will want to set out early in the mornings to see Long’s Peak, Sky Pond, and Chasm Lake as well. Trail Ridge Road is an incredible drive that takes visitors above the tree line to plenty of overlooks with stunning views. The Alpine Visitor’s Center has the highest elevation in the country and offers a well-stocked gift shop and snack bar. The evening is the perfect time to see wildlife in the park, so plan to stay after sunset to see elk, moose, and deer wandering the fields as the color changes in the summer sky.

Asheville, North Carolina

One of the most underrated places to visit in the US in the summer is Asheville. Located in the mountains of North Carolina, Asheville is perfect for foodies, beer lovers, and those looking for a unique getaway.

One of the most popular must-dos is visiting the Biltmore Estate, the largest home in America owned by the Vanderbilt family. Not only will admission get you an audio tour of the home, but also access to their extensive gardens, conservatory, stables, shops, and even a wine tasting at their winery! There are over 80 breweries in the vicinity so be sure to add a few to your  Asheville itinerary . Some favorites are Wicked Weed, Hi-Wire, and Highland Brewing Company. Finally, Asheville has incredible food including fusion tacos from White Duck Taco Shop, pie flights from Baked Pie Company, and melt-in-your-mouth biscuits from Biscuit Head.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Kanab, Utah

Kanab is one of the best places to spend summer due to the plentiful amount of amazing things to see and do in the area. It’s an adventure seeker’s paradise! Kanab is a popular stop between Zion National Park and Horseshoe Bend, and you should plan to spend at least two days exploring the surrounding area during your summer road trip.

Some top things to do in and near Kanab are ATVing at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, hiking through the mysterious  Belly of the Dragon , and scrambling up rock cliffs to explore the Moqui Caves. If you enjoy hiking, there are plenty of great trails in the area, including Wire Pass, Toadstool Hoodoos, and Peekaboo Slot Canyon. 

Summit County, Colorado

With four ski resorts inside its boundary (Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain, and A-Basin), Summit County, Colorado is well known as a top winter destination.  But, when the snow melts, the short summer in Summit County is magical.

Summit County is in the heart of the Rocky Mountains but only sixty-five miles from Denver.  The outdoor scenery is stunning with colorful wildflowers, aspen and pine trees, cute mountain towns, and a high mountain lake, all surrounded by rugged mountains.  

At 9,000 feet in elevation, Summit County is the perfect place to go in the summer to escape the heat.  Not only is the weather perfect, but there are also so many incredible things to do in Summit County in the summer.  Great hiking trails, miles of paved bike paths, kayaking and fishing on Lake Dillon, and outdoor concerts and festivals.

Each of the ski resorts also offers fun things to do in the summer.  The Mountain Coaster at Copper Mountain, Peak 8 fun park in Breckenridge, the Arial Adventure Park at A-Basin, and mountain biking at Keystone.

Long-time Summit County locals have a saying “ We moved here for the winters and stayed for the summers .” They are on to something!

Carson Valley, Nevada

Tucked into the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Nevada, Carson Valley is a hidden gem that’s just waiting to be discovered. With its stunning natural beauty and rich history this area is the perfect destination for travelers who want to experience something off the beaten path.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

After all, this enchanting island overlooks Lake Huron and can be found just off the coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

If you’re interested in exploring the  Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina  is an ideal place to start. Covering the western reaches of the state, the dynamic Blue Ridge region of NC encompasses numerous sub-ranges (including the Great Smoky Mountains, Black Mountains, and more), with more than 30 peaks that reach 6,000+ feet. These mountains are truly a nature lover’s paradise, with hundreds of amazing hiking trails, waterfalls, colorful wildflowers, and abundant birds and wildlife. 

There are dozens of beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain towns in NC that are worthy of exploring. A short list of the best towns would include Asheville (a cultural hotbed), Bryson City (for the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and Nantahala River), Brevard (home to 250+ waterfalls), Sylva (a hip college town), Blowing Rock (for stunning scenery), and Cherokee (for indigenous culture). Los Angeles, California

Summer in Los Angeles is the perfect time to enjoy all the great outdoor activities the city has to offer. From the gorgeous beaches to the myriad of hiking trails, there are plenty of ways to enjoy and beat that summer heat. There’s more to Los Angeles than just glitz and glamour.

With over 75 miles of coastline and 100 beaches,  Los Angeles beaches  are some of the best in the world. Spend your day soaking up the sun, swimming in the ocean, surfing, or building sandcastle. There’s no better way to cool off and escape the summer heat. Santa Monica (don’t forget to walk the iconic pier), El Matador, and Zuma are beaches you do not want to miss.

With over 500 miles of trails, Los Angeles has plenty of great hiking spots to explore. On your next visit, be sure to check out Mt. Hollywood Trail in Griffith Park, the closest you can get to the Hollywood sign. If you want a challenge, Mount Baldy is the highest point in LA with incredible sub-alpine views. If hiking doesn’t set your soul on fire, but you still want a glimpse of the iconic Hollywood sign, visit Lake Hollywood Park.

Olympic Peninsula, Washington

Olympic National Park is arguably one of the most diversely stunning U.S. National Parks, cramming dramatic beaches, towering mountains, and lush rainforests, all within a short drive of one another. While this area is famously one of the rainiest in the country, the summer is the perfect time to visit, with clear skies, warm temperatures, and snow- and ice-free roads and hiking trails.

One of the best ways to explore the park is to get out on any of its incredible hiking trails, like the famed Hall of Mosses trail, which winds through the luscious Hoh Rainforest, or Hurricane Hill, where you’ll stroll across the spine of a mountain while the snow-capped peaks of the Olympic Mountains surround you. For a more challenging adventure, consider planning a backpacking trip along the Enchanted Valley trail , through the Quinault Rainforest to a stunning valley, with seemingly vertical mountains with countless waterfalls streaming down their sides.

Alternatively, you could spend days exploring Olympic’s jaw-dropping beaches. The park is known for its more rugged beaches, with pebbly shores, sea stacks jutting out of the sea, and the surrounding pine tree forests. For a real showstopper, head to Ruby Beach for sunset—you won’t regret it!

Monterey and Carmel, California

Acadia, Maine

Acadia National Park and the surrounding area is the perfect summer destination.  The islands and peninsulas of the park are surrounded by a beautiful rocky shoreline with the woods going right up to the edge.  If you like getting out on the water, you can kayak around the shoreline, stopping off at beaches along the way, and exploring tiny coves and bays.  To get further out, take a sailing trip around the nearby islands, or hop on the public ferry to the nearby Cranberry Islands, where you can visit quintessential New England fishing villages. 

Inside the park, don’t miss Jordan Boathouse and their delicious popovers (a local specialty), smothered in butter and jam, and served al fresco with sensational views of the pond and The Bubbles.

If you like to be active, there are dozens of hiking trails to the tops of the many hills in the park. You’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding islands.  There are also miles of former carriage roads throughout the park that you can walk or cycle on.

To cool off after all that activity, head to the beach on Echo Lake, one of the  most beautiful lakes in US national parks , or the saltwater Sand Beach.

All of these activities make summer the perfect time to visit Acadia! The lovely town of Bar Harbor is just outside the main entrance to the park and makes a great place to stay and eat. Newport, Rhode Island

Newport is one of the best summer destinations in the United States due to it’s cooler weather and beautiful nature. Located on Aquidneck Island the average temperature is cooler than mainland New England due to the breeze of the ocean. Whether you enjoy taking in history, admiring nature, or eating incredible food – there are plenty of things to do in Newport for any traveler.

Take a walk along the stunning three and a half mile Cliff Walk for some incredible views. There are numerous parking areas so if you’re short on time you do not have to do the whole thing. Right next to the Cliff Walk is the beautiful Breakers Mansion. The original Breakers was built in 1885, but burned down the same year. The one standing today was built in 1892 and owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt. Today, the house is a designated a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public. Wander through downtown and get some unique souvenirs. There are plenty of places to eat nearby as well. The Black Pearl requires reservations, but is known for its incredible fresh seafood. To appease your sweet tooth, stop by The Cookie Jar – they have dozens of freshly baked homemade cookies!

Lake Placid, New York

Lake Placid is a lakeside getaway in upstate New York known for its beautiful scenery and outdoor adventures. Its location in the midst of the Adirondack Mountains makes it  ideal for hiking , especially in the spring and summer. The area surrounding Lake Placid is home to some of the best hikes in the state. When the weather warms and Mirror Lake melts, you can find visitors from all over the Northeast enjoying lake activities like kayaking and paddleboarding. Mirror Lake, located in the center of town, is the perfect place to stay on a visit to Lake Placid. Most visitors stay near Main Street, where you’ll find plenty of cute shops, restaurants and bars. I particularly loved my stay at the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort, which has rooms right on the lake. The hotel has a private beach and offers free paddleboard and kayak rentals to its guests. It’s the best way to enjoy the best that Lake Placid has to offer. Don’t forget to grab breakfast at Saranac Sourdough, a local mainstay serving up some delicious sourdough pancakes and homemade bread. For dessert, head over to Emma’s Creamery, an iconic 50’s style ice cream parlor near the Golden Arrow.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

One of the best destinations to visit in the summer in the US is also one of the most historic. When the weather turns warm, the country’s history comes alive in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was the birthplace of America, the headquarters for General George Washington, the signing of the Constitution, and the first capital of the country. Philadelphia is where it all started. Be sure to spend at least two days in Philadelphia for the full experience.

Spend a day visiting the historical sites in Center City. Start by visiting the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Carpenter’s Hall at the Independence National Historical Park. Then head by Betsy Ross’ house, see Benjamin Franklin’s old haunts and soak up all the ambiance in Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest street in America. Walking around the city, you’ll be surrounded by the history of the country’s earliest days.

But Philadelphia isn’t a relic of the past. It’s a lively city full of parks, gardens, and universities. Grab a quick lunch in the food hall at the historic Bourse Exchange. And then enjoy a casual afternoon on one of the piers in the Delaware River in their pop-up beer gardens and watching the boats on the river. From the hammocks at Spruce Street Harbor Park to the artsy ruins of the Cherry Street Pier, you’ll find food and drink to relax.

Philadelphia is home to some of the best restaurants in America. From Amada to Zahav and everywhere in between, you’ll find some great grub. Other standouts also include Buddakan and Vedge. Ocean City, Maryland

If 10 miles of white sandy beach sounds like the perfect setting for a summer vacation, head to  Ocean City, Maryland ! In addition to popular beach activities like swimming, surfing, jet skiing, stand-up paddling, and kayaking, Ocean City offers pier fishing and chartered boats for deep water fishing. It is the White Marlin capital of the world after all!

Hours of entertainment can be had day or night on the 3-mile boardwalk complete with amusement park, souvenir shops, bars, and restaurants. Try one of the famous local snacks: a bucket of Thrasher’s French Fries with malt vinegar, Dumser’s Ice Cream, or Fisher’s Caramel Popcorn. However, in this area, you should also eat Maryland Blue Crab. Steamed crabs at Hooper’s and/or Waterman’s is highly recommended! Just minutes from Ocean City you will find the Assateague Island National Seashore with miles of nature trails, 2 herds of wild horses, and over 300 species of birds. The beach here is pristine even though there’s an area for 4-wheel driving on the sand. Also nearby, the neighboring town of Berlin, provides a charming downtown full of antique shops and galleries. If this sounds more to your liking than the bustling beach, stay at the historic Atlantic Hotel, which also has an excellent restaurant. Otherwise, an oceanfront hotel like the Cambria in Ocean City will work nicely.

Situated 30 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Lake James is one of the best summer vacation spots in North Carolina. Hedged between the towns of Nebo and Linville, the lake offers plenty of ways to stay cool while having fun.

Grab a kayak and start your day with a sunrise paddle on blue water, then head to the marina and rent a boat for a day of water skiing. Nearby Lake James State Park offers several hiking and mountain biking trails. There’s also a beach area where you can catch a few rays or go swimming for a small fee. When it’s time to break away from the water, head to the mountains for the elevation and cool breezes.  The Blue Ridge Parkway and several small towns like  Black Mountain  are 30 minutes away.

Enjoy nature and save a little money with a campsite at Paddy’s Creek campground, or splurge with a beautiful rental home at Camp Lakes James. After working up an appetite, check out Countryside BBQ for some famous North Carolina pulled pork and cheesecake, or head to Bob’s donuts for a special treat. Lake James has everything you need for summer.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks is one of the most beautiful summer destinations in the United States. The barrier islands are 175 miles long, meaning there are plenty of things to do! There are 15 wonderful towns of the Outer Banks w, so you’ll find one that fits your travel style. Well known for the beautiful beaches – it’s the perfect summer destination if you want sand between your toes!

History buffs can visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial to learn about the history of flight and pay homage to the two men who changed travel forever. Step back in time at Roanoke Island – a 25 acre historic site. Nature lovers would enjoy a trip to Corolla to spot the wild horses of the Outer Banks . These horses were brought over from Spain and have been freely roaming the island for hundreds of years. There are five lighthouses on the islands as well – from the red brick Currituck lighthouse to the large Cape Hatteras lighthouse down south.

A beach vacation isn’t complete without doing a water activity like fishing, kayaking, jet skiing or even paragliding! Indulge your sweet tooth at the famous Duck Donuts. You have to order the donuts at least a day before as they are made to order – but you can’t go wrong with fresh hand-made donuts!

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is a fantastic place to visit in any season but summer is especially fun because of all the beaches that have opened and the tourist season is in full swing. In normal times this means lots of festivals and markets to visit!

Folly Beach is the most popular beach in the area and a great spot to lay out in the sun. Charleston is known for the culinary scene so be sure to take a food tour while you’re there.

Ghost Tours are also popular because so many buildings in the city are considered to be haunted. If you want to get outside the city for a bit then check out Charleston Outdoor Adventures that offers kayaking tours through the marsh.

If you plan on exploring downtown for most of your trip then there is no better place to stay than The Mills House. However, if you are on a budget then check out hotels in Mt. Pleasant instead – it’s a 20 minute drive over the Ravenel Bridge.

There is no shortage of incredible places to eat in town. Make sure to go by Poogan’s Porch for lunch or hit Brown Dog Deli for incredible food at a great price. Husk or The MacIntosh are great places for dinner.

If you want something super fancy then go to Halls Chophouse. Incredibly expensive but worth every dime. For a great dessert cafe stop by Kaminsky’s. You won’t be disappointed!

Savannah, Georgia

Enchanting  Savannah, Georgia has much to offer , from its decadent dishes, to its alluring architecture, to its haunted history. Summer can be one of the best times to explore, as crowds tend to thin and visitors can enjoy discounted hotels and flight deals. Travelers should consider a stay at one of the six properties in The Historic Inns of Savannah collection. Each offers a top-rated experience and a centralized location.

Although temperatures heat up in summertime, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the city while staying cool. Visitors can take advantage of a fresh breeze on a trolley tour or soak up the refreshing mist aboard a Georgia Queen river cruise.

Savannah is also a short 20-minute drive from Tybee Island, a fun city excursion. Here, travelers can visit the state’s oldest lighthouse and take an invigorating dip at the nearby beach.

While all seasons offer fun things to do, summer is an amazing time to  visit for a weekend getaway  or longer trip.  With access to exciting outdoor activities ranging from fishing, kayaking and sailing to biking and hiking through popular state parks filled with gorgeous waterfalls, there is plenty to do for families, a romantic vacation or a solo adventure.  You can stop at a number of charming small towns as you make your way up the 145+ miles of shoreline from Duluth, home of the iconic aerial lift bridge, to the Canadian border. 

Stay overnight at the Beacon Pointe Resort (Duluth), Larsmont Cottages or Superior Shores Resort (Two Harbors) or the Best Western Plus Superior Inn (Grand Marais) so you can take in a memorable view of Lake Superior from your room.

Whether you’re in the mood for smoked salmon from Northern Waters Smokehaus, drinking a cold beer at Castle Danger Brewing, grabbing a picnic to go from Cedar Coffee Company or enjoying a slice at Betty’s Pies, you are sure to find some tasty local treats on your scenic drive up the North Shore.  

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Dells is a city in Wisconsin famous for its indoor and outdoor waterparks. It’s home to Noah’s Ark, which is considered the largest water park in the United States. Even though the waterparks are responsible for the vast amount of visitors to the city, there are plenty of other things to do as well. You can visit the local attractions downtown that consist of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not shop, Wizard Quest — an interactive scavenger hunt — and plenty of others. There are also many different type of shops in the area to buy souvenirs from too. 

When it comes to living arrangements, there is a large selection of hotels you can stay at in Wisconsin Dells. If you plan on spending most of your time in the waterparks, each of them will have its own resorts. Otherwise, you can stay at some of the nearby hotels. If you’re staying by the waterparks, there are plenty of places to eat around the area with diverse food choices to try. If you’re feeling Mexican food, Jose’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant is a top choice. If you’re feeling the typical American grill, you can’t go wrong with Monk’s Bar & Grill. 

Although the state and city is cold for most of the year, Wisconsin Dells makes for  the perfect warm destination during the summer  with an average high temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit. There is no better way to enjoy the hot summer temperature than at fun waterparks. 

Boulder, Colorado

There is no better place for a summer getaway than to Boulder Colorado . Once the unpredictable spring weather has passed, the summers are full of sunshine and downtown is bustling with activity. Whether you’re an outdoor adventurer, an art lover, or a foodie, Boulder has everything for a weekend – or longer- itinerary. At the base of the famous flatirons is Chautauqua Park, pick up one of the trailheads that lead up into the flatirons for epic views of the city. Or take a stroll around the historic buildings, stopping for lunch at the Chautauqua Dining Hall.

Almost everywhere you go in Boulder, there are street murals hidden in plain sight. Find curated collections at The Dairy Art Center or Boulder Museum of Contemporary Arts, which is conveniently located right at the Boulder Farmers Market, often tagged as one of the best farmers markets in the country. Boulder is also a foodie’s paradise. Pick up the perfect picnic at Cured and have lunch along the Boulder Creek while watching people test their rafting skills down the creek. Many award winning restaurants are found along Pearl St, the outdoor pedestrian mall, but don’t miss the hidden gems right off Pearl. Bohemian Biergarten is a favorite, and Avant Food & Beverage offers epic Pearl St and flatiron views.

While in town, stay at one of the local hotels like the historic Hotel Boulderado, the outdoorsy-themed Basecamp Hotel, or the luxurious St. Julien Hotel.

Black Hills National Forest

The Black Hills National Forest  is very much an under-the-radar destination but that doesn’t mean it’s not highly worth a visit! Situated on the South Dakota/Wyoming border, this is the perfect area to base yourself this summer.  

Within just a short driving distance of each other, there are no less than six historic sights, monuments, memorials, and national parks found in the vicinity of the Black Hills. 

For those interested in Cold War history, a must-visit attraction is the  Minuteman Missile National Historic Site.  In this fascinating place, you can learn all about the development of nuclear weapons during the Cold War. You also get to take a look into the lives of the people that used to work (and live) Minuteman Missile. 

If you are more interested in outdoor fun, head over to  Sheridan Lake . At this scenic lake you can go hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and even waterskiing! Lake Sheridan is a nice place to base yourself and if you like camping you’re in luck.  Sheridan Lake Resort  is situated right at the lake and offers lots of facilities. If you don’t have a campervan or tent, you can also rent one of the (very affordable) cabins. 

Another place to visit when you are exploring the amazing Black Hills National Forest is of course  Mount Rushmore . Take a stroll along the Avenue of Flags and walk the short and easy Presidential Trail which brings you up close with the stern stone faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. 

South Dakota Road Trip

One of the best summer destinations that might not automatically come to your mind is South Dakota. The beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota is the perfect summer destination. 

As you drive through South Dakota you may see signs for Wall Drug Store advertising “Free Water -150 miles ahead”  or “5 cent coffee  -75 miles ahead” This may lead you to ask “ What the heck is Wall Drug Store ?”  It is actually really funny, this drugstore started offering free water in the early 1900’s to get people into their store.  They put signs along the main highway.  This tactic worked and still works today!  Wall Drug Store brings in 20,000 visitors a day with over 2 million each year.  Wall Drug Store offers more than just water and coffee today, it is a restaurant and tourist shopping site. 

Wall Drug Store is located very close to Badlands National Park. The Badlands has some amazing hikes but in the summer it is best to go early in the morning.  Also located nearby is Mount Rushmore.  Mount Rushmore is incredible.  Most people imagine just pulling over and taking a picture and continuing on their way, but once you arrive you quickly realize that Mount Rushmore is amazing.  There is a museum and hiking trails located on-site. 

One of the most beautiful scenic drives in the area is located at Custer State Park just 40 minutes south of Mount Rushmore.  It is most famous for the  Needle Highway Tunnel.  The tunnel is very narrow and “fun” to drive through.  There are over 1300 buffalo at Custer State Park!   You could spend a week exploring Custer State Park. Camping or Airbnb is a great idea in this area. South Dakota is a great summer destination with plenty to see and do! 

Padre Island, Texas

Padre Island is by far one of the most fantastic beach towns in Texas , and you can find a pleasant summer destination in this little paradise.

The weather is quite comfortable but has pretty warm highs. 

But don’t worry. If it’s too warm for you, take a swim in the calm and clean waters surrounding this barrier off the southern coast of Texas.

For thrill-seekers, kiteboarding and windsurfing are some of the sports you can practice while feeling the sea breeze. What’s not to love, right?

If you prefer something more laid-back, beyond chilling on the beach, camping, and picnicking, you can bird- and dolphin-watch on this incredible place. The opportunities are really infinite here.

Looking for a place to stay? Then you will want to check out La Copa Inn, which is a top-rated beachfront hotel in South Padre Island. And for wild-caught seafood and delicious steaks, head over to Sea Ranch, a colorful eatery with marina views. It definitely does not disappoint!

Orlando, Florida

Although there is no off-season in Orlando as this Florida city gets sunshine throughout the year, but if you visit Orlando in summer, it will offer plenty of tourist attractions and outdoor activities beyond its popular theme parks.

Still, Orlando is incomplete without visiting Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Walt Disney World park is one of the best family attractions in the country. This massive park covers 40 square miles and features like fairytale castles of Magic Kingdom, fun rides in Hollywood Studio, and safari trips in the Animal Kingdom. Universal Studios Orlando is another popular amusement park that features thrilling rides dedicated to Harry Potter, spectacular shows, and Wet’n’Wild where you and your family can cool off.

The theme parks in Orlando will definitely add up your summer vacation cost, but if you are looking for free attractions in Orlando, you won’t be disappointed. Visit Lake Eola located at the heart of downtown Orlando. Rent a swan-shaped paddle boat and enjoy the mesmerizing views of the lake and skyscraper building at the backdrop of the lake. Honeymoon Island, Florida

Florida offers some of the best summer destinations in the United States, with great options for incredible beaches to choose from for a perfect vacation. If you are looking for an incredible, less touristy beach  Honeymoon Island State Park is a great place for outdoor lovers of any age as it offers many options like soaking in the sun, swimming, fishing, kayaking, biking, and hiking.

Honeymoon Island State Park is located in Tampa Bay area on Florida’s west coast, only 25-minutes from Clearwater. To visit this paradise, oyu pay a $8 entry fee and can enjoy a full day of many activities. 

You can go enjoy the 4-miles of amazing beaches and a 3-mile hiking trail through one of the last remaining virgin slash pine forests.  You can do a picnic in any of the designated areas, and also, go rent a kayak or take a ferry and visit the Caladesi Island, separated only a few minutes from the Honeymoon Island. 

There is no option for accommodations inside Honeymoon Island & Caladesi Island. But it is just a short distance driving from Clearwater or Dunedin, where you can find several options for accommodations.  

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is one of those incredible places on earth where you create memories for a lifetime. While  working in the US , I visited Yellowstone a few times and I still keep on wanting to go back.

For starters, it’s the oldest national park of the United States, home to a unique ecosystem of abundant wildlife, lush forests, raging rivers, wild valleys, geysers, and a lot more. 

There is no dearth of things to do in Yellowstone. While there are many geysers, each more breath-taking than the other, the old Faithful is that iconic geyser that erupts every 90 minutes or so. Definitely worth a stop.

Stop at the Mammoth Hot Springs to see the breathtaking waterfall of white and orange stone.  

Head to the Lamar Valley early morning or late evening to spot tons of wildlife, including bison, elks, wolves, pronghorn sheep. And if you are lucky, you would come across a bear or two. I always did.

Visit the Artist Point in the afternoon to have a sweeping view of the canyons and get that classic Yellowstone picture.

Summer is definitely one of the best times to visit Yellowstone since all the roads are accessible. 

Zion National Park, Utah

Visiting in the summer months gives you access to all the top hikes in the park and fantastic weather to explore the trails and other National Parks in Utah. While you’re here, you can cross off some serious bucket list hikes that are scattered above, inside, and around the magnificent Zion Canyon. My personal favorite trail is Observation Point, and once you pair this with other epic hikes like the two I mentioned above, the Narrows and Angel’s Landing, as well as Hidden Canyon, Emerald Pools, and The Subway to pack in your visit with the most awe-inspiring views. 

Zion is best explored in a few days, so I recommend basing yourself inside the park or in the neighboring town of Springdale. Pitch your tent at the South or Watchmen Campgrounds if your summer adventure is a little more rugged. The Zion Lodge is perfect if you want an elevated stay inside the park, and the Under The Eaves Inn is perfect if you want to stay in a unique, historical 1930s Airbnb in the heart of Springdale. Seattle, Washington

While it has a reputation for being gray and rainy, Seattle is at its best in the summer months, when the weather is warm and dry and the days are long thanks to its position in the northwest corner of the United States. 

Spending a weekend in Seattle is a perfect amount of time to see the main sights while saving some time to explore some of the city’s best neighborhoods. 

The two must-do traditional tourist attractions in Seattle are Pike Place Market (don’t miss Beecher’s Cheese and Ellenos Greek Yogurt), the Seattle Center, home of the Space Needle and Museum of Pop Culture. You’ll want to stay nearby, either in Belltown or Downtown Seattle, to put yourself in the perfect position for visiting both. 

On top of those two, you’ll want to spend the rest of your time in Seattle exploring the many charming neighborhoods, like Capitol Hill. In Capitol Hill, you’ll find a wide range of bars, restaurants, and shopping that will delight even the most discerning foodies. Grab a shot of espresso at Espresso Vivace’s sidewalk bar (not at Starbucks), explore Elliot Bay Book Company to find your next read, indulge in ice cream at Molly Moon’s, a Seattle institution, and finish off your day with drinks at Footprint Wine Tap or Canon.

San Diego, California

San Diego is one of the most popular summer destinations in the United States thanks to its 70 miles of coastline and pleasant sunshine. It doesn’t get humid as many other tropical destinations do during the summer months, so it’s easy to spend long days sightseeing and enjoying quintessential SoCal beach days.

Families, in particular, visit during school breaks because  San Diego with kids  is easy between its famous theme parks (like San Diego Zoo and LEGOLAND California) and fun outdoor activities that include mild hikes, biking, learning how to surf, and other water sports. Those without little ones in tow enjoy the over 200 craft breweries (be sure to pair some suds with a fish taco, the city’s must-eat dish) or golfing courses like Torrey Pines, home to this year’s US Open PGA golf tournament. All ages enjoy the 16 museums, trails, and gardens in Balboa Park, the nation’s largest urban cultural park.

Tourists tend to stay mostly in La Jolla or Coronado during the summer. Both communities border famous beaches and offer restaurants and shops within walking distance of popular hotels, like the historic Hotel del Coronado. San Francisco, California

The beautiful hilly city of San Francisco, California is one of the trendiest travel destinations in America. San Francisco sits under a cloud of near constant fog (which the locals have nicknamed Karl), chilly winds and frequent rain, so if you’ve packed shorts and t-shirts for your trip here, you might want to rethink!

But despite the less than hot weather, many tourists still flock to San Francisco in the summer months. Why? To escape the heat. Temperatures in August are likely to reach highs of 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) and the city is a little warmer in September when the average daytime temperature is 21 degrees (70 degrees Fahrenheit). However, compared to a lot of US States, it’s much more bearable and a comfortable temperature to be exploring the great outdoors.

One of the  best things to do in San Francisco  is take a visit to the city’s famous Golden Gate Bridge. I recommend walking it – it’ll take 1.5 hours at best (maybe more depending on the amount of photo stops you make) but it’s well worth it for the stunning views across the Bay area.

Also, make sure you don’t miss Fisherman’s Wharf and pay a visit to the adorable seals that call Pier 39 home, stroll the famous twists and turns of Lombard Street, climb to the top of Coit Tower and take a stroll through the Castro. If you have a little longer in San Fran, you could also take a trip to Yosemite National Park, one of the greatest parks in the USA

Summer is the perfect time to visit Alaska. The season is short, so June, July, and August are the best months to visit this largest US state. This is the perfect time for wildlife watching, bear viewing, mountain hikes, and kayaking or fishing tours. The best places to stop on your  Alaska road trip   are Anchorage, Seward, Homer, Valdez, and Denali. You will find there the largest selection of hotels of all standards and numerous campaigns. But it is worth booking accommodation in advance. Due to the short season, Alaska is visited by many tourists in the summer.

Best things to do in Alaska in summer: In Denali National Park, take a guided bus tour through Denali Park Road, which allows you to spot lots of wildlife and admire the highest peak of North America. Another perfect idea is to take a flight tour over mountains with a glacier landing.

In Homer, visit Salty Dawg Saloon. The bar is known for the thousands of dollar bills signed by visitors and tacked to the walls. They serve great beer. But most of all, Homer is famous for delicious fresh oysters. Taste them in Homer Spit Oyster Bar. Homer is long known as The “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” so try to catch one during a boat fishing trip.

In Valdez, take a kayaking trip. Seward is the best for taking Kenai Fjords and Resurrection Bay Wildlife Cruise, a great opportunity to admire Kenai Fjords National Park with sea lions and thousands of nesting seabirds, sea otters, and whales.

With summer just around the corner in the USA , you’re likely already dreaming of where to spend your vacation. 

And you won’t be alone. The months of June to August form the US’s busiest travel season. The warm days mean events such as music and food festivals are in full swing,  national parks  are fully open for the season, and there are more opportunities for outdoor activities. Kids are out of school, and you could face big crowds and higher prices wherever you go.

Whether you want to see some of the most incredible and well-known places or you're aiming to get a bit off the beaten path, here is our guide to where to go for a summer vacation in the United States.

1. The Big Island, Hawaii

The island of Hawai’i (most often referred to as “the Big Island”) is the largest of the state ’s chain of islands, and it’s full of scenic beauty, miles of volcanic rock formations, breathtaking peaks and valleys, waterfalls, trails and rugged beaches (including the Papakōlea green-sand beach ). With eight of the world’s 13 climate zones, the island of Hawai’i is ecologically diverse to an astounding degree, with thousands of unique species of plants and animals.

A car is a must with so much to see, but the roads are rarely crowded (save for rush-hour traffic around Kona and Hilo ). Dive with manta rays in Captain Cook, ride horses in Waimea , stargaze near the summit of Mauna Kea , swim at Mahaiʻula Beach and most definitely take a hike in stunning  Volcanoes National Park . Better yet, plan to shack up at the historic Volcano House inside the park, where Mark Twain once stayed. Start the day by sipping a hot cup of Kona coffee at 4000ft and wrap it up with a sunset mai tai aboard a catamaran, followed by a delicious dinner at Moon and Turtle in Hilo.

2. Mackinac Island, Michigan

From either Mackinaw City or St Ignace, you can catch a ferry to Mackinac Island, Michigan . The island’s location in the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron made it a prized port in the North American fur trade, and a site the British and Americans battled over many times. The most important date on this 3.8-sq-mile island was 1898 – the year cars were banned in order to encourage tourism. Today, all travel is by horse or bicycle; even the police use bikes to patrol the town. Eighty percent of Mackinac Island is state parkland.

The crowds of tourists – called Fudgies by the islanders – can be crushing at times, particularly during summer weekends. But when the last ferry leaves in the evening and clears out the day-trippers, Mackinac’s real charm emerges as you drift back into another, slower era.

3. Glacier National Park, Montana

Few places on earth are as magnificent and pristine as Glacier National Park . Protected in 1910 during the first flowering of the American conservationist movement, Glacier ranks with Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon among the United States’ most astounding natural wonders. The glacially carved remnants of an ancient thrust fault left a brilliant landscape of towering snowcapped pinnacles laced with plunging waterfalls and glassy turquoise lakes. The mountains are surrounded by dense forests, which host a virtually intact pre-Columbian ecosystem. Grizzly bears still roam in abundance, and smart park management has kept the place accessible and authentically wild.

Planning tips:  Although the park remains open year-round, most services are closed between October and mid-May, making a summer visit the best, if not only, time to get the park’s full offering. Going-to-the-Sun Rd , which crosses Glacier National Park, opens when crews finish plowing the snow, which could be as late as July.

4. Lewes, Delaware 

This tiny, darling dot on the coast is known as the “First Town in the First State ” and is a must-visit come summer. The main attraction in Lewes is its gorgeous, wheelchair-accessible beach, part of the 5000-acre Cape Henlopen State Park  – which also contains a nature reserve with excellent programming (bird walk, anyone?). But the entire town will draw you with its historic Victorian homes, some dating from the 1700s, treasure-filled antique shops and beachy boutiques, multiple restaurants and the not-to-be-missed King’s Homemade Ice Cream .

View remnants of the War of 1812 and other relics at Cannonball House, part of the 90-minute Lewes Legends Walking Tour , which brings local history to life every Wednesday evening. Explore the Saturday morning Historic Lewes farmers market, then make your way to Eggcelent for a divine breakfast spread. 5. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park is the wild, free-flowing, beating heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Its real showstoppers are the geysers and hot springs – nature’s crowd-pleasers – yet at every turn, this land of fire and brimstone breathes, belches and bubbles like a giant kettle on the boil. The park’s highways traverse these geysers, through meadows and forests, past roadside herds of bison and campsites aromatic with pine needles and family campfires. In between lies the country’s largest collection of elk, the continent’s oldest and largest wild bison herds, and a pristine wilderness roamed by wolves, grizzlies, moose and antelope.

Planning tips:  June to August is the busiest time to visit Yellowstone (when more than half of the park's visitors arrive), perhaps because it’s the time of year when the full range of visitor services, accommodations and entrances to the park is open. Hotel rates peak at gateway towns, park campgrounds fill by lunchtime – and reservations are essential.

6. Outer Banks, North Carolina

North Carolina ’s Outer Banks are fragile ribbons of sand tracing the Atlantic coastline for more than 100 miles, separated from the mainland by sounds and waterways. Broken up by villages, the ribbon of Cape Hatteras National Seashore  is home to several noteworthy lighthouses. A meandering drive down Hwy 12, which connects much of the Outer Banks and makes up part of the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway (and its 21 coastal villages), is one of the truly great American road trips.

The quaint waterfront area of Manteo is a pleasant base from which to explore the Outer Banks. Near the harbor is the Roanoke Island Festival Park , where visitors can learn about the first English colonies on North American soil. In summer, be sure to catch an atmospheric amphitheater performance by Lost Colony Outdoor Drama , which portrays the story of the colonists who arrived in Manteo in the 1580s (before the European settlers arrived at Plymouth Rock) – and then disappeared.

10. Chicago, Illinois

11. Portland, Oregon

12. Grand Canyon, Arizona

13. South Walton, Florida

Sandwiched between Destin and Panama City along Scenic Hwy 30A in the Florida Panhandle are 16 unincorporated communities collectively known as South Walton. Each town has its own identity, most master-planned resort towns with architecture following set themes. If you only make two stops, we recommend delightful Grayton Beach , which feels as though it was settled by old-school hippies who came into money (stay a night here if you can) and the meticulously manicured village of Seaside, which is so well-planned they filmed The Truman Show here. Other points of interest include the whimsically named community of WaterColor, Moroccan-themed Alys Beach and the Dutch-inspired hamlet of Rosemary Beach.

14. The Ozarks, Missouri

Even though flashy Branson receives the lion’s share of tourists (nowhere in the USA will you find more family-friendly entertainment, with huge hokey musicals in abundance), hiking and river floating are the two best reasons to visit the Ozarks . Indeed, beyond Branson, nature rules in this mountain range, which straddles Missouri , Arkansas and Oklahoma .

But, even with the throngs of beach-goers, this Southern Delaware destination deserves a spot atop your summertime vacation list. With the ocean on one side and the bay on the other, it's a watery paradise, making it the ideal spot to book a charter boat. Back on dry land, stay at Hyatt Place Dewey Beach , located about a mile off the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk, and feast at Woody's Dewey Beach , known for having some of the best crab cakes around.

Sheridan, Wyoming

Wyoming is the least populated state in the nation, so it's no surprise it's home to more than its fair share of spectacular small towns. Sheridan (with a population of around 19,700) just so happens to be one of its best. Catch a show at the WYO Theater , watch a polo match at the Big Horn Equestrian Center , or see the cowboys and cowgirls show off their moves at the Sheridan County Rodeo . During your time here, brush up on Sheridan's history and cowboy culture at the Don King Museum and Fort Phil Kearny . You can take in the sounds of summer at Concerts in the Park, which puts on a show every Tuesday, or at the monthly 3rd Thursday street festival.

When you're ready to hang up your cowboy hat, get a room at Sheridan Inn , conceptualized by Buffalo Bill Cody and built in 1892. Or, head to the Mill Inn , a former flour mill at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains.

Hermann, Missouri

Willkommen to Hermann, the Missouri River Valley's crown jewel, which comes with plenty of picturesque German architecture. This community of approximately 2,400 people, originally established in 1837 by German immigrants, is the heart of the state's wine country. A few of our top picks for local wineries include Stone Hill Winery , Adam Puchta Winery , and Martin Brothers Mead . The place to stay among the region's rolling hills is at The Cottage or, more specifically, in one of the property's three tree houses, which provide stunning views of the lush landscape.

Worthwhile pit stops in town include the Deutschheim State Historic Site for a guided tour of two wonderfully preserved homes and Hermann Farm for the grand tram tour, which includes a guided experience to the 1847 Teubner-Husmann home.

New Paltz, New York

New Paltz, a town of less than 10,000 residents, delivers on the picture-perfect summer escape. Wander along boutique-lined Main Street and stop at the Water Street Market, an open-air shopping village filled with antiques, art, and other unique finds. You can pump up your adrenaline hiking the River-to-Ridge Trail or sit back and sip local vintages at one of the 12 wineries along the Shawangunk Wine Trail .

When you're ready for a rest, head to Mohonk Mountain House , a Victorian castle-style resort that's been owned and operated by the Smiley family since its founding in 1869. You could easily spend an entire vacation on the property, playing tennis, horseback riding, or relaxing at the spa.

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Surround yourself in summer's glory with a visit to the picturesque New Hampshire town of Bretton Woods. The village sits in the "larger" town of Caroll (with a population of around 820 people), with the Omni Mount Washington Resort serving as the center of the action. During your stay, you'll enjoy award-winning dining and recreational pursuits ranging from golfing on a classic Donald Ross-designed course to whizzing along nine high-flying zip lines.

Other must-see attractions close by include the Mount Washington Cog Railway , an 1869 cog railway that carries thrill-seekers to the top of the Northeast's highest peak, Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet. There's also Crawford Notch State Park , an ideal place for fishing, wildlife viewing, waterfall chasing, and otherworldly mountain vistas.

McCall, Idaho

It's important to keep your mind open to the possibilities during a visit to McCall. That's because, in this small town of around 3,100 residents, you'll find Payette Lake, which is reportedly home to Sharlie, a lake monster, described as a creature "...at least 35 feet long, with a dinosaur-type head, pronounced jaw, humps like a camel, and shell-like skin."

Lake monsters aside, McCall is pretty welcoming. Located in the awe-inspiring West Central Mountains of Idaho, this is a place to bring your activewear, as you'll likely spend your days hiking and horseback riding or mountain biking and waterskiing until the sun goes down. Bird-watching, dinner cruises, whitewater rafting, and paddleboarding are all big draws, too. After working up a sweat, kick back at Salmon River Brewery 's rooftop beer garden, which offers the best view of Payette Lake from downtown. Have dinner at the Clubhouse Restaurant at Jug Mountain Ranch , which has an ideal patio for sunset dining. Then, lay your head at the upmarket Shore Lodge or Hotel McCall , both of which will keep you safe from lake monsters all night long.

Across the UK, anger is brewing amongst some farmers.  

Protests have already been held in London, Dover and Cardiff, with more planned - mirroring similar tensions seen across Europe in the last six months.     

They say they’re annoyed about cheap foreign imports and changes to subsidies forcing them to give up land in favour of environmental schemes.    

But what does this mean for the food on our table - and does British produce risk becoming a luxury product for the wealthy only?    

On the Sky News Daily , Niall Paterson is joined by West of England and Wales correspondent Dan Whitehead to find out why farmers are so concerned, and speaks to Liz Webster, the founder of Save British Farming, about why she believes eating British isn't just good for our farmers - it's good for the nation's health, too.   

In response to our report, Farming Minister Mark Spencer, said: "We firmly back our farmers. British farming is at the heart of British trade, and we put agriculture at the forefront of any deals we negotiate, prioritising new export opportunities, protecting UK food standards and removing market access barriers. 

"We've maintained the £2.4bn annual farming budget and recently set out the biggest ever package of grants which supports farmers to produce food profitably and sustainably."

The Welsh government said: "A successful future for Welsh farming should combine the best of our traditional farming alongside cutting-edge innovation and diversification. 

"It will produce the very best of Welsh food to the highest standards, while safeguarding our precious environment and addressing the urgent call of the climate and nature emergencies."

Speaking to Sky political editor  Beth Rigby , Sir Keir Starmer has defended his decision to allow Tory MP Natalie Elphicke into Labour.

Ms Elphicke was on the right of the Conservative spectrum, and previously defended her sex-offender ex-husband, comments which she apologised for this week following her defection.

Addressing Tory voters, Sir Keir says he wants Labour to be a "place where they who have ambitions about their families, their communities, their country, can join and be part of what we are trying to build for their country".

Asked by Beth if he was ruthless, Sir Keir said: "Yes, I'm ruthless in trying to ensure we have a Labour government that can change this country for the better.

"Not ruthless for my own ambition, not ruthlessness particularly for the Labour Party - I'm ruthless for the country. 

"The only way we'll bring about a change in this country is if we're ruthless about winning that general election and putting in place a government of public service, that’ll be a major change.

"Politics, I believe, should be about public service, that's what I've been about all my life."

She reminded him that he previously ruled out doing a deal with the SNP - but has not done so for the Liberal Democrats.

Sir Keir again ruled out a coalition with the SNP - adding that he is aiming for a "majority Labour government".

He says Labour needs "to keep working hard, keep disciplined and getting our message across, which is something fundamental to me".

Pushed on his lack of ruling out a possible agreement with the Lib Dems, Sir Keir says: "I'm going for a majority.

"That's the answer I gave you a year ago. It's the same answer I'm giving you now."

Sir Keir Starmer was earlier today pushed on whether Rwanda deportation flights will take off if he was prime minister - although it was not clear if he would cancel flights which had already been organised.

Sky News understood that previously booked deportation flights to Rwanda would still go ahead if Sir Keir entered Number 10. 

But the Labour leader has now gone further.

Speaking to political editor Beth Rigby , Sir Keir has ruled out any flights taking off.

"There will be no flights scheduled or taking off after general election if Labour wins that general election," he says.

He says: "Every flight that takes off carries with it a cheque to the Rwanda government. 

"So I want to scrap the scheme - so that means the flights won't be going."

Sir Keir says he would rather spend the money on his own measures to counter small boats.

"No flights, no Rwanda scheme. It's a gimmick," he says.

Scotland's new first minister has told Sky News that the controversial gender recognition reforms "cannot be implemented."

John Swinney,  who became first minister this week , has faced questions over his stance on gender recognition after MSPs voted in 2022 to pass a bill to make it simpler for people to change their gender without having to obtain a medical diagnosis.

The UK government blocked the bill from being made into law and the Supreme Court rejected a request by the Scottish government for a judicial review.

Asked if he would be fighting to push the bill through, Mr Swinney told Sky News: "The reality of the situation we face is that the Supreme Court has said that we can't legislate in that area. We can't take forward that legislation."

The UK economy is no longer in recession, according to official figures.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by a better-than-expected 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

Economists had predicted the figure would be 0.4%.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it showed the economy had "turned a corner".

He told Sky News's Ed Conway: "I am pleased that while there's more work to do, today's figures show that the economy now has real momentum, and I'm confident that with time, people will start to feel the benefits of that.

"We've had multiple months now where wages are rising, energy bills have fallen, mortgage rates are down and taxes are being cut... I'm pleased with the progress that we're making."

Mr Sunak added: "I am confident the economy is getting healthier every week."

Rishi Sunak has criticised Sir Keir Starmer's position on Rwanda as "rank hypocrisy".

Speaking to broadcasters, the prime minister says the Labour leader has announced things the government is "already doing".

He gives the example of "punching through the backlog, having more law enforcement officers do more, that's all happening already".

"We've announced all of that more than a year ago," the prime minister adds.

"The question for Keir Starmer if he cares so much about that, why did he vote against the new laws that we passed to give our law enforcement officers new powers? 

"They've now used those to arrest almost 8,000 people connected with illegal migration, sentenced them to hundreds of years in prison.

"And if it was up to him, all those people would be out on our streets, so I think it's rank hypocrisy property of his position."
