Planning a Golf Trip This Fall? Here's What to Know and Where to Go

As National Golf Month comes to a close, the sport has become a go-to activity for many looking to get outdoors and stay active in a safe, socially distant manner.

More than 34 million people played golf last year, including 24.3 million who played on a course and another 9.9 million who participated in off-course activities like simulators, Topgolf , or driving ranges. Women represented about 23 percent of on-course golfers, according to data from the National Golf Foundation . Professionals like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have become well known sports celebrities who’ve attracted new players to the game.

Golf and travel go together, with a scenic or storied course often providing the impetus for a trip to a faraway destination. A bucket list item for many golfers is a round at St. Andrews in Scotland where golf began, while some choose resorts where ocean views, forested fairways, and après golf luxuries add to the experience. Other golfers travel to vacation spots where they can play on a new course and also work on improving their skills. A few examples of learning facilities are The Kingdom at Reynolds Lake Oconee Kingdom of Golf and the Hualalai Golf Hale at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Social Distancing, Health, and Golf

Of great importance at this time, golf lends itself to social distancing, and many golfers even enjoy playing alone, walking the course or riding in a golf cart. With a few minor adjustments, it’s possible to enjoy a round and adhere to current health guidelines. Touch points like bunker rakes and flagsticks must be avoided, and modifications to the holes make it easier to prevent touching when retrieving the golf balls. One golfer per golf cart (unless the other is a member of the household) is the rule at most courses. Naturally, being active outdoors in wide-open surroundings is another plus.

Professional Tournaments Have Changed Too

Professional tournaments, following the cancellation of the March PGA TOUR Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, have been postponed and are now played without spectators, a major change made necessary by COVID-19. The season-long competition for the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 ended recently at Sedgefield Country Club, North Carolina. The U.S. Open , usually played in June, will be held in September at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York. Fan favorite, The Masters , always an April event replete with golf tradition, will be played in mid-November in Augusta, Georgia. All would have been exciting destinations for golf travel as they have in previous years.

Plan Your Golf Road Trip

In and near every major city, there are plenty of courses for golfers to choose for their golf vacation. Just toss the clubs in the car and get out on the highway for ultimate convenience. It’s not necessary to be a member of a country club or to pay expensive greens fees. In fact, 76 percent of U.S. golf facilities are open to the public, and many cost under $50 a round, according to the National Golf Foundation. Here are just a few suggestions for a golf vacation, and you’ll easily find many others that fit your budget, skills, and interests.

Massanutten Resort in Massanutten, Virginia, offers two 18-hole courses, tree-lined fairways, a variety of activities and accommodations, and 6,000 acres of mountain scenery.

Seaview, a Dolce Hotel in Galloway, New Jersey, is set on 670 secluded, wooded acres with two 18-hole courses and a fun nine-hole putting course.

Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri, offers a variety of golf courses including a Jack Nicklaus signature par 3 course, and Payne’s Valley, designed by Tiger Woods.

Casino del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, offers Sewailo, set in the natural Sonoran Desert landscape amid lakes and streams, surrounded by mountains.

Pronghorn Resort in Bend, Oregon, boasts two courses that feature views of the Cascade Mountains, juniper forests, canyons, and ancient lava formations.

Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, California, offers a Scottish links-style course set along the Pacific Ocean.

The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, set in the Cheyenne Mountain foothills, offers two courses with mountain vistas, tree-lined fairways, and multi-level greens.

Sea Island Resort on Georgia’s coast offers three scenic courses and an 18-hole putting course designed by Pro David Love III.

Pebble Beach on California’s Monterey Peninsula, on the wish list of many golfers, provides a choice of accommodations and golf at several legendary courses.

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

Moscow Country Club Moscow Country Club

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. TOUR Championship recognized for commitments, actions, progress in sustainability

International certification achieved for the first time in tournament history

ATLANTA – The 2023 edition of the TOUR Championship has become a GEO Certified® tournament for the first time in the event’s history, recognizing its sustainability commitments, actions and progress.

The PGA TOUR’s season finale received the international award for sustainability in golf, overseen by Scotland-based GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation, reflecting measures across the staging, communications, and legacies of the event.

The 2023 event met specific criteria outlined in the voluntary standard for Sustainable Golf tournaments, which embodies requirements for planning, delivery and continual improvement across a comprehensive suite of key sustainability themes and action areas including energy, waste and resource management, site protection and procurement, as well as social impacts and legacies. The independent third-party verification was carried out by the Council for Responsible Sport with a thorough review by GEO Certification Ltd., and agreement to various "Continual Improvement Points" for future editions of the event.

“Congratulations to the TOUR Championship on achieving this distinction for the first time,” said Jonathan Smith, executive director of the GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation. “It is wonderful to see the event step forward as another pioneer in the wider PGA TOUR initiative and to use the standard and certification process as a framework for action, target setting and measurement of progress for the years ahead. Congratulations to the tournament team, all supporting partners and contributors. We look forward to seeing continued progress through the years ahead.”

The 2023 TOUR Championship marked the official launch of the PGA TOUR’s sustainability program with a vision to lead, partner and inspire to take climate action and promote nature. The PGA TOUR Partner Connect Sustainability Summit brought together key leaders from corporations connected to the TOUR, including the event’s Proud Partners, to discuss how the environmental impact of events can be minimized while positive multipliers and legacies for nature and communities can be increased.

“This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration from the Atlanta community and especially our Proud Partners – Accenture, The Coca-Cola Company and Southern Company,” said Alex Urban, executive director of the TOUR Championship. “We look forward to continuing our commitment to build a more sustainable tournament as we work to improve and innovate for the 2024 event, and exhibit a more eco-friendly experience for our players, partners and fans.”

The recognition is a significant step on the tournament’s sustainability journey. As part of the certification process, the TOUR Championship achieved high marks across the priority areas of event planning, staging operations, communications and legacies.

Highlights from the initiatives observed during the event and through submitted evidence included:

• Climate action: 100% renewable energy provided through Southern Company via battery-powered and renewable diesel generators onsite, renewable energy certificates and renewable natural gas delivered to East Lake’s clubhouse throughout the week.
• Recycling: Scrim and plastic merchandise wrapping collected and repurposed post-event.
• Waste reduction: From material guidelines, including alternative options and emphasizing minimization, provided to all vendors through the Procurement Plan, through to composting in all back-of-house kitchens and hospitality suites.
• Supporting local: Prioritizing local and seasonal products by catering provider, Proof of Pudding. Little Greens, an Atlanta-based vegetarian food outlet featured for first time. Excess food was donated to the local community.
• Community impact: The work of the East Lake Foundation is a key part of the TOUR Championship with featured events including school trips, supporting Executive Women’s event and "Tee up ATL." The First Tee Game Changer Pavilion drew 3,250 visitors throughout the week.
• Communications and awareness: Sustainability focused engagement through the operations team with the East Lake Foundation and other beneficiaries, partners, and vendors. Other activations included Southern Company’s Good Energy Pavilion and Coca-Cola Waste Challenge.

“At Southern Company, we are immensely proud that the TOUR Championship has been recognized as a GEO Certified® Tournament,” said Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO Chris Womack. “Delivering 100% renewable energy for the TOUR Championship and driving sustainability on course links up with our company goal off the course – achieving net zero emissions across our electric and gas businesses by 2050.”

The TOUR Championship will make a return to Labor Day weekend in 2024, with tournament dates set for Aug. 28-Sept. 1, as the PGA TOUR’s top 30 players compete in the FedExCup Playoffs finale for their chance to win the FedExCup and the season title.

Collier commission approves lease and operating agreement for golf complex in Golden Gate

Collier commissioners have approved a long-term lease and operating agreement critical to the reopening of the Golden Gate golf course.

On Tuesday, the board voted unanimously in favor of the contract, authorizing the commission chairman to sign it.

The action has been a long time in coming.

Nearly six months after BigShots backed out of its plans to build a golf entertainment center on the county-owned land last year, a newly formed charity made an offer to step into its shoes in mid-December, then won a competitive bid to move forward.

The new nonprofit was formed by the Schmieding family, behind the global medical device manufacturer Arthrex, based in North Naples. Known as The Gate Golf Club Inc., it will design, build and operate the community project through a public-private partnership.

The county will kick in $6 million to help fund the redevelopment, the same amount it promised to give BigShots before the company bowed out, then got absorbed by its competitor TopGolf.

The new golf complex will include a nine-hole community course with a driving range, a practice area and a full-service restaurant, with at least 150 seats. It will also have a pro shop, cart barn and maintenance building.

For a nominal amount, The Gate will sublease a portion of the land to First Tee for the development of a clubhouse with classrooms, offices, conference rooms and storage to support that organization's youth development program.

Arthrex has long been a big supporter of First Tee in Collier County.

In partnership with First Tee Naples/Collier, Arthrex plans to create a golf learning center for kids to introduce them to the sport, while using the sport to develop their character and core values. The First Tee Academy would offer advanced, interactive technology and learning classes, as well as providing a practice area for young players at the site.

Golf complex will have many benefits

Ed Finn, an assistant county manager, told commissioners the project would be built to the highest standards, and give the public access to a public golf course that meets the community's highest expectations. He listed the many benefits of the project, from boosting the local economy to enhancing green space and increasing golf access by making it more affordable for the community.

Discounts would be offered to county residents on rounds of golf, in the amount of 40% on seasonal rates and 20% on offseason rates. The annual value of the discounts is estimated at $600,000.

Participants in First Tee would also get a break on rates.

The Gate will pay a base rent of $130,000 a year to the county, which will be phased in over the first three years of operations, then subject to an annual adjustment, based on the Consumer Price Index.

A private company will be hired to manage and maintain the operations.

Before construction can begin, the county commission must approve more detailed plans for the project, which are expected to come back to the board within six months.

Once plans are approved and all site-related permitting is obtained, construction will have to be completed with 24 months, or two years, under the terms of the lease, unless there is justification for delays.

"There could be some twists and turns in this," Finn said.

If all goes as planned, the golf course could open in the fall of 2025.

The cost of the development has been estimated at about $21 million.

The agreement includes an out clause should environmental issues arise that make it too difficult or costly to build.

The Golden Gate golf course has been closed for more than four years.

Collier County purchased the property, located at the corner of Collier Boulevard and Golden Gate Parkway, in July 2019, from its owners for $29.1 million, with the goal of preventing overdevelopment in the wrong hands, and with the intent of maintaining a public golf course.

Project will bring golf course 'back to life'

A handful of neighbors spoke in favor of the lease and operating agreement with The Gate, saying they're eager to see dirt move, after so many unforeseen challenges and delays.

"Arthrex is bringing this golf course back to life," said CeCe Zenti, who lives nearby, in the Par One subdivision.

The proposal, she said, will allow people of all backgrounds to play golf, including young families, and their children.

"This is a project whose time has come," Zenti added.

During the board's discussions, Commissioner Rick LoCastro said it was an "opportunity we don't want to waste," with the "50-pound brain" of Arthrex's founder Reinhold Schmieding behind it. Arthrex, a formidable force in its industry, has overseen and completed many big construction projects, as it's continued to expand its footprint in Southwest Florida and beyond.

While it's hard to determine if the proposed golf complex is perfect in every way, without the benefit of more detailed plans at this time, LoCastro said a "9.5 right now" is better than a "10 that never comes."

"Will it be a 10? I don't know," he said.

A 'long time in coming'

Commissioner Burt Saunders, who represents Golden Gate, has championed the project and other uses at the shuttered golf course property, including workforce housing and a veterans nursing home.

"For me, this has been a long time in coming," he said. "So, I'm delighted."

He motioned to approve the agreement and thanked the commission for "staying the course."

Commissioner Bill McDaniel seconded, expressing his support, after getting a few questions answered about the project, and the lease terms.

Although a bit painful, Commissioner Dan Kowal said he's glad the deal with BigShots fell through because the county ended up with a much better offer that will be more beneficial to the "entire county."

He said the involvement of First Tee will make the project "fantastic."

The local chapter has the potential to become a "model for the country," as part of the redevelopment, Kowal said.

The proposal by BigShots also included a home for First Tee, so when the deal fell apart it came as a big disappointment to its leaders, supporters and participants.

LoCastro gave credit to the hard work of Cindy Darland, executive director at The First Tee of Naples/Collier, who continued to push for its inclusion, as part of a larger community project, with passion and clarity. He pointed her out in the second row of commission chambers.

"You might be sitting in the second row," he said, "but I think on this project you are front and center."

Moscow Country Club Becomes Latest European Tour Destination

How It Works

Team Format Rules : Round 1 and 3 are Four-Ball (Best-Ball) and Rounds 2 and 4 are Foursomes (Alternate Shot). For Four-Ball play, the players on each team will each play his own ball throughout the entirety of the round, with the best score on each hole recorded. During Foursomes play, players will rotate tee shots. One player will hit the tee shots on all the odd-numbered holes, and the other will hit the tee shot on even-numbered holes. Players altermate shots until the ball is holed.

Making the Cut: The starting field will consist of 80 teams (160 players. The low 33 teams/pairs and ties following Round 2 continue play into the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Both players on the winning team receive a two-year winner’s exemption and an eligibility into Invitational fields, including the Tournament of Champions and The Players Championship . Each member of the winning team receives 400 FedEx Cup Points and $1.286 million from a record prize pool of $8.9 million.

Production for ‘One Piece’ Season 2 Is Expected To Begin in June

With joe tracz joining the team as co-showrunner, writer and executive producer..

Following the previous update from One Piece ’s showrunner Matt Owens, more production updates have been confirmed in a recent Deadline interview with Joe Tracz , the new co-showrunner for the Netflix series.

Having served as the co-executive producer for Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians as well as writer for A Series of Unfortunate Events , Tracz will be joining Owens as co-showrunner, executive producer a well as writer for One Piece Season Two, while former co-showrunner Steven Maeda takes up the role as executive producer. Given his experience as a writer and producer for crafting action-packed on-screen adventures in a fantasy setting, Matt Owens is confident that Tracs will serve as a great force for the show, referring to him as a co-captain of this “a co-captain of this ship.”

Men’s Golf Opens Play at SEC Championship

University of Missouri men's golf sits in 13th place through one round of action at the SEC Championship.

Senior Jack Lundin and sophomore Virgilio Paz lead the Tigers through 18 holes, carding a one-over 71. The duo tied for the team lead with three birdies to pace Mizzou on Wednesday.

Rounding out the day for the Tigers were sophomore Alfons Bondesson (73), senior Charlie Crockett (75) and freshman Adam Miller (75).

As a team, Mizzou posted a score of 290 (+10) and is nine strokes off the pace to qualify for the match play rounds.

Day two is set for Thursday morning with an 8:40 a.m. CT tee time.

Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy will get huge loyalty bonuses from PGA Tour

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are among the golfers expected to be given equity in PGA Tour Enterprises as a thank you for sticking with the Tour instead of jumping to rival LIV Golf, the Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

Woods will receive a $100 million and McIlroy a $50 million stake in the newly-formed enterprise for not taking lucrative offers from the Saudi-backed LIV as merger negotiations between the two circuits continue to drag on.

A substantial portion of current PGA Tour members will be rewarded with equity in the new for-profit entity, according to a memo sent out in February by commissioner Jay Monahan and seen by Reuters.

PGA Tour Enterprises is majority owned by the Tour and bolstered by a $1.5 billion investment by Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of sports team owners, the memo said.

The program will reward top performing members and legends who helped build the modern PGA Tour, the memo said.

The initial round of player equity grants will total $930 million and will be awarded to 193 PGA Tour members, with the majority of that going to the top 36 players as determined by a performance-based formula, the memo said.

All initial grants will require players to compete in 15 or more events on the PGA Tour and/or complete service requirements commensurate with the value of the grant.

A spokespersonfor the PGA Tour said the Tour could not comment on any detail of the Telegraph report due to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regulations and private financial information.
