Meningococcal and travelling
Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection spread by saliva and other respiratory secretions. It can cause symptoms ranging from fever, neck stiffness, headache, light sensitivity to pneumonia, arthritis, conjunctivitis to the distinctive non-blanching rash.
Vaccination is recommended for people travelling to sub-Saharan Africa or attending mass gatherings like traveling to Mecca.
The best prevention against meningococcal disease is to be vaccinated. The meningococcal‑C vaccine is available on the National Immunisation schedule to children 12 months of age and older. (Check with your State and Territory Health Department for eligibility).
Tips to tackle travel health risks
- Avoid drinking unbottled water, including when showering or brushing your teeth
- Avoid raw seafood, meats or non‑homogenised dairy products
- Avoid or minimise exposure to contaminated medical equipment, like in tattoo parlours or through unregistered dental or medical procedures
- Practice good basic hygiene like thorough hand washing, not sharing drinking cups, and not kissing, all of which could facilitate the spread of disease.
We can help with much more than travel vaccinations.
Our expert Amcal pharmacists can guide you on the best measures to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) if you are taking a long-haul flight, and what simple precautionary steps you can take and complementary therapies may help if you are visiting isolated areas where infectious diseases may be endemic, including:
- Echinacea or Andrographis–may help boost immunity
- Vitamin C–has been shown to reduce the severity and duration of a cold. 3
- Probiotics–may reduce the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections and traveller’s diarrhoea
- Zinc–doses of 75mg/day may reduce the duration and symptoms of colds
- Pressure flight socks and stockings – may help improve circulation to assist with DVT prevention
Aside from foods to avoid, we can also recommend antidiarrhoeal medication, insect repellent, sunscreens, rehydration solutions, mosquito nets and repellants, sterile needle and syringe kits, and much more to make sure you’re prepared for life on the road. Read More

Can an Amcal pharmacist administer all travel vaccines?
Your Amcal pharmacist may administer some travel vaccines depending on which State or Territory you are in, in addition to COVID-19, influenza, whooping cough (pertussis) and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). What should I expect after being vaccinated?
Vaccines are rigorously tested and go through many rounds of study, examination, and research before they’re used with the general public. Vaccines have been around for a long time and have proven to be one of the safest and most effective public health interventions in history, saving millions of lives globally every year eradicating diseases like smallpox, and preventing tetanus, polio, and diphtheria. All vaccines can have side effects, which are usually mild, and your pharmacist will talk you through these during your appointment and discuss which vaccines may be appropriate for you.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration’s safety monitoring team of doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and scientists are closely monitoring any reported side effects from vaccines to investigate any safety issues. Up-to-date information regarding vaccine safety and vaccine recommendations can be found here and here .
When should I see my GP?
Your Amcal pharmacist will discuss which vaccines are recommended prior to entry to specific destinations as per the Health Department guidelines, along with exposure risks, taking other precautionary measures, and how to best prepare to avoid any travel disasters. Where certain vaccinations are not part of the National Immunisation Program in pharmacy, your Amcal pharmacist will refer you to a travel vaccination administrator in your area.

NEW! 2024 Immunisation Clinic Timetable
When you immunise your loved ones, you help protect the community, and this helps to save millions of lives each year. As immunisation is one of the most cost-effective public health initiatives, it’s vital that the community builds awareness to minimise the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases.
Eastern Health Authority provides vaccines recommended for children and adults on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) to people with a current Medicare Card.
Eastern Health Authority invites residents in Adelaide’s eastern and inner-north suburbs to attend one of our immunisation clinics–both drop-in and appointment only–at no charge. Free immunisation services to residents within selected council areas.
If you‘re looking to book in an appointment ahead of time, download our current Immunisation Clinic Timetable. The timetable covers our ‘drop in’ and ‘appointment only’ clinics that are available mornings, afternoons and evenings. The clinics are open weekly, fortnightly, and monthly so they’re easy to visit in amongst your schedule.
There are different locations and times to suit your needs, you can find our 2024 Timetable here.
Please note: For travel vaccinations, you need to visit your local GP or travel vaccine service.

- Medicare Card
Meningococcal B – Bexsero
The State Government Meningococcal B (MenB) Immunisation Program provides funded MenB (Bexsero®) vaccines to eligible children and young people who are residents of South Australia and have a Medicare card.
Bexsero should be routinely administered at 6 weeks, 4 and 12 months of age. This aligns with the usual schedule points for the National Immunisation Program (NIP) vaccines.
For children that are not eligible under the State Government Meningococcal B Immunisation Program, parents can purchase the Meningococcal B vaccine, Bexsero, for $140.00 per dose. Contact us for further information or to discuss your child’s eligibility. Please note we cannot accept vaccines purchased from the pharmacy prior to your appointment.
For details and information from SA Health, please click here .
At risk groups
Within our community there’s groups at a much higher risk of vaccine-preventable disease. The Government recognises this and is funding a select range of vaccines for at risk groups.
Pregnant Women
The Annual Influenza Program allows pregnant women to be eligible for a free flu vaccine. It’s recommended that pregnant women receive this vaccine from their 1st trimester.
The Pertussis vaccination, also known as Whooping Cough, is best to given between 28 and 32 weeks gestation. Pregnant women can help protect their newborn and themselves by getting immunised during their 1st trimester, resulting in protective maternal antibodies transferring through the placenta. This helps provide the newborn baby with protection against whooping in the early weeks of life before childhood immunisations start.
If you have any questions about receiving the vaccination during your pregnancy, contact your us on 08 8132 3600 or your local GP.
The Immunisation coverage rates are improving, but there continues to be several factors affecting Aboriginal immunisation coverage rates. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, adolescents and those over 50 will receive extra free vaccinations.
We recommend Aboriginal adolescents and adults to receive the Annual Flu and Pneumococcal vaccine. Please contact us or your local GP for further information.
Older Australians
Vaccinations are crucial for seniors aged 65 years or over. Influenza is a very contagious infection of the airways and it can be especially serious for people over 65 years old. The flu virus strains change every year and the vaccine changes every year to match these strains. The Australian Government have made it a priority to entitle those over 65 to a free annual flu vaccine.
Pneumococcal disease is another bacterial infection that is especially serious for older people. Without the vaccination it can cause pneumonia, infection of the blood and inflammation of the membranes around the brain.
The Pneumovax 23 vaccine is free for those who are over the age of 65 years.
Others at risk
If you have a chronic medical condition or are at high risk of catching Pneumococcal disease, we highly recommended to receive the Pneumovax 23 vaccine.
To find out if you be at risk, please speak with your doctor or visit this website.
Australian Immunisation Register
The Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) is a national register that records vaccines given to children under the age of 20 years living in Australia. The register identifies: - National Immunisation Program. - Immunisation School Programs. - Privately, such as for flu or travel. - Health professionals.
To keep track of your child’s immunisations history you can access it on the Medicare website.
Assessment of Immunisation Records
For residents within our areas that have missed any scheduled vaccinations, or have received your vaccination elsewhere in Australia or overseas, we can assess your records and schedule any over due vaccinations.
Fill in the form required , and provide a copy of your previous Immunisation History in English or translated into English, and return to us.
Do you know if your immunisation records are up to date? For more information, call us on 8132 3600 and we can help.
Can I bring my own vaccines?
In some cases a medical practitioner will complete a script for a vaccine so that the individual can purchase the medication and arrange the vaccination at their convenience. Because of the safety and regulations of vaccines and cold chain management, our Immunisation Nurses cannot administer these vaccinations.
Vaccines can be purchased from EHA directly at the time of an immunisation appointment and administered on the same day. It is best to call ahead to ensure the vaccine is in stock when your attend your immunisation appointment.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.
On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.
Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.
⚡️Map of European cities where people complain about the lack of heating and electricity due to the restriction of #ruZZian energy supplies 😆😆😆😆😆 pic.twitter.com/o0kldiLwiy — Aurora Borealis 🤫 (@aborealis940) January 8, 2024
Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.
That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.
Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.
Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.
Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.
"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."
Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.
On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.
Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.
Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.
