About the glaciers of iceland.

Iceland is often nicknamed the land of ice and fire because  glaciers and volcanoes cover a large part of it. In Iceland, the two sometimes mix , meaning that some glaciers even have a hidden volcano underneath them, for example, Eyjafjallajökull and Snæfellsjökull. These phenomena, known as stratovolcanoes, can have a dramatic impact on the surrounding region when they erupt.

iceland glacier tours from reykjavik

Visiting the glaciers is a must in Iceland and most visitors choose to book a tour. The main glaciers to visit are Snæfellsjökull, Drangajökull, Eiríksjökull, Langjökull, Hofsjökull, Tungnafellsjökull, Vatnajökull, Mýralsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. From these glaciers run outlet glaciers, some of which are pretty famous, like Breiðarmerkurjökull (home to the Crystal Ice Cave ) and Sólheimajökull .

Most of the glaciers are located in the South or the Midlands because more snow falls there than manages to melt away. This occurs when damp winds heading over the North Atlantic give rise to the air over Icelan d. Th e air gets colder and more saturated before turning into drops which become crystals that fall down , if it is cold enough the crystals will turn into snow. When the winds reach the north , most of the moisture is already out of the air which results in less precipitation. About 20% of precipitation falls over glaciers.

The glaciers cover about 11% of Iceland’s surface area, which is equivalent to about 11,400 km² (4,402 sq mi) or 103,125 km² (39, 817 sq mi) . Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest glacier, covers about 8% of the land.

The History of Glaciers in Iceland

It is believed that the last ice age came to an end about 10,000 years ago , following this came a period of warmer conditions. Iceland is thought to have been completely glacier-less (or at least almost) about 9,000 years ago. This, along with the milder weather, lasted until around 2,500 years ago , when Iceland became colder once again and the glaciers that we see in the present times started to form.

Are Icelandic Glaciers Melting?

Around the year 1995, glaciers started shrinking rapidly and now make up about 20% of Icelandic rivers and waterfalls. Vatnajökull Glacier has been shrinking at an alarming rate and predictions are that the glaciers in Iceland will only continue to melt, creating even more streams that will carve their way around Iceland. This is also thought to impact the rising sea levels, as the melting glacier water will, in the end, join the sea.

Solheimajokull glacier ice melting

Volcanoes and their eruptions can also affect the melting of the glaciers , something that was very evident when the Eyjafjallajökull stratovolcano erupted in 2010. The glacier shrunk considerably and its rivers and waterfalls gained flow.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE GLACIERS IN ICELAND?

Most of the glaciers in Iceland can be seen right off the Ring Road . They are mainly located on the South Coast of Iceland and in clear weather, you can see them from afar.

If you are staying in Reykjavík , the closest glacier to you is Mýrdalsjökull’s outlet, Sólheimajökull. It can be seen from Road 1 when weather conditions are clear, otherwise, you can join a glacier hike to explore.

If you are on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula you will easily spot the beautiful Snæfellsjökull that thrones the lava-covered land. You will need to drive for about 1.5 hours from Reykjavík before you begin to catch a glimpse of the icy wonder.

If you’re driving or taking a tour to southeast Iceland, the glaciers will be in your line of sight for most of the journey. This is because the southeast is covered in glaciers; you’ll even find the largest ice cap located here as it stretches its outlets down towards the road.

In the Westfjords you will find only one glacier, Drangajökull. It is hard to reach this isolated beauty but there are some hiking trails and tours in the area .

Glaciers should never be visited without an experienced, knowledgeable guide.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO TOUR GLACIERS IN ICELAND

Glacier hiking tours.

One of the most accessible ways to experience Iceland’s glaciers is glacier hiking. Strap on crampons, a harness, and a helmet to set out on your hiking expedition. Once you get the hang of walking with crampons, a technique that beginners will quickly master, you can begin to take in your surroundings. Bright white ice contrasts with black volcanic rock and ash, trapped for millions of years within the glacier beneath you. You’re often surrounded by ice as far as the eye can see, with soaring mountains in the distance.

We offer a large number of day and multi-day tours that include a hike on one of Iceland’s glaciers, typically Sólheimajökull or Falljökull. Our tours include an expert guide and all the equipment you could need to assist you on the ice. Your guide will be able to point out the most unusual ice formations and most treacherous spots, where pools of water could reveal mile-deep drops to the glacier’s core.

GLACIER CLIMBING TOURS

If you’re up for something a little more adrenaline-piquing, ice climbing is a fantastic addition to a glacier hiking tour. This is a great tour option for those looking to embrace the adventure that lies around every corner in Iceland. Try your hand at making your way up a sheer ice face using your crampons and ice axes with the expert guidance of your tour leader. Sólheimajökull is our most popular glacier for our glacier climbing tour options.

iceland glacier tours from reykjavik

ICE CAVE TOURS

Another way to enjoy the glaciers that lie within Iceland’s borders is to embark on an ice cave tour . These tours take place at multiple glaciers and outlet glaciers, including Breiðamerkurjökull, Mýrdalsjökull (Kötlujökull), Falljökull, and Langjökull. We take you deep inside these ice formations, offering an experience like no other. The light shining through the thick ice is truly something to behold, creating ethereal effects and leaving you speechless. Our guides are happy to answer any questions about the formation of these curious caves while you walk within them.

GLACIER SNOWMOBILING TOURS

If you’ve seen a glacier from below, the next best thing is to explore the landscapes on top of one, and what better way to enhance your experience than with a snowmobile? Our glacier snowmobiling tours allow high-speed and high-adrenaline exploration, taking in stunning landscapes without a dull moment. Langjökull and Vatnajökull are the glaciers that are most popular for snowmobiling.

How to Choose the Right Glacier tour in Iceland?

When making a bucket list for Iceland odds are that you wrote down “ go on a glacier hike ” and you were right to do so, the island is after all named after ice. But there is only one problem you might encounter; there are too many tours and options to choose from. Fear not, we are here to help!

explorers looking at glacier ice crevasses

The first questions that need to be asked are :

  • Are you joining a day tour or a multi-day tour?
  • If you are joining a day tour, will you have a car?

After that, you might want to consider the time you have in Iceland.  If you are staying only a short amount of time , maybe on a stopover, or simply prefer the Reykjavík city life then Langjökull, Sólheimajökull, Kötlujökull, and Snæfellsjökull are the closest glaciers. These can easily be visited on day tours from the city.

This gives you the option of snowmobiling on Langjökull  “the second-largest glacier in Iceland” or even  snowmobiling and ice caving  if you are visiting in winter.

iceland glacier tours from reykjavik

Sólheimajökull, “home to the sun glacier”, then invites you to explore its incredible blue ice and all the wonders it creates all year long with these options:

  • For those who want to go glacier hiking and ice climbing: Blue Ice tour and Glacier Xtreme tour .
  • For those who want an easier version of glacier hiking: Glacier Experience .
  • For those who want to explore the South Coast as well:  Glacier, Volcanoes, and Waterfalls .
  • For those who want to explore the South Coast and have the chance to experience the Northern Lights : Sensational Iceland Waterfalls, Glacier Hike & Northern Lights .

Up next, we have the magical Kötlujökull, an outlet from Mýrdalsjökull and his brother Sólheimajökull. Not too long ago, a natural ice cave was found here that lasts throughout the year. At the time, this was completely new and had never been known to exist in Iceland. Kötlujökull is named after the volcano Katla as it sits under the glacier. This is why the tour, which is available from Vík and Reykjavík, has been named the Ice Cave under the Volcano .

A QUICK GUIDE TO CHOOSING A GLACIER TOUR

iceland glacier tours from reykjavik

MULTI-DAY GLACIER TOURS

If you are staying for a longer period in Iceland, over three days or more, then your glacier tour options scale opens even wider. You have time to visit the Vatnajökull Glacier area, the largest glacier in Europe, and with that comes endless options for even more glacier adventure. Here are the options for meeting on location tours, made possible with a rental car, or on a multi-day tour.

For winter traveling in the region, you could join a Crystal Ice Cave tour , the most popular ice caving tour year after year. You c ould do the glacier hiking and ice caving combo called Into the Glacier or join a shorter glacier hike, the Glacier Wonders (available all year). Those who want to go further up on the glacier can then join the Glacier Explorer (available all year) but if you are there in summer the Glacier Grand Slam is ideal!

iceland glacier tours from reykjavik

When choosing a glacier hike, multi-day tours give you many intriguing options, both with and without accommodation, with pick-up, or including a rental car (a self-drive trip).

Again, we have to ask questions :

  • Do you want to stay in Reykjavík and do day trips out?
  • Do you want to join a guided tour?
  • Do you want to do a guided self-drive trip?

Those who want to stay the night in Reykjavík but join glacier hiking experiences, as well as other fun activities on day trips, can look at our adventure packages in Iceland . Where you get 10% off each day trip.

Those who want to join a guided tour with a glacier hiking experience that travels further out of the city, exploring hidden gems and staying at farm hotels, can look at our multi-day adventures in Iceland .

Glacier Adventure - Glacier Walk

More information about our glacier walks.

Since 1994, Icelandic Mountain Guides has been Iceland's leading glacier tour operator. We offer a broad and exciting range of glacier tours for all skill levels and durations from three locations: From Reykjavík, on Sólheimajokull in South Iceland and in Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National park in the south east.

All tours include basic safety equipment. Our expert guides are highly trained in safety and first aid, and they are bursting with interesting information about Iceland that they can't wait to share with you.

Glacier Walks from Reykjavík

Glacier Day Tours give you a chance to view, feel, and even taste (yes, we said it!) these spectacular phenomena. On our Glacier Tours, you don‘t just see the glacier. We give you a pair of crampons, an axe, a harness and some rope and take you for a walk on the ice field: peer into a moulin or drink the crystal clear meltwater. The tours give you a real up close experience with those frozen giants, with transfer to and from the capital.

Approximately 11% of Iceland is covered with glaciers, and owing to logistics and road access, Iceland is probably the best place in the world to see these frozen giants. The biggest glaciers in Iceland are also the easiest to reach from the capital Reykjavík: there is only about a two hour drive to the fourth biggest glacier in the south of Iceland. Glacier Day tours from Icelandic Mountain Guides give a chance to view, feel and even taste these spectacular phenomena.

Glacier Walks from Sólheimajökull

Are you driving the Ring Road on the south coast and want to stop in for a tour along the way? Then you will find your adventure one our our South Iceland Bases at Sólheimajökull or Mýrdalsjökull . Stop by our meeting point at the glacier and catch one of our daily glacier hikes or in summer try a kayak tour on the lagoon in front of the glacier. The Mýrdalsjökull base is the starting point for snowmobile and ATV / Quad bike tours on the black sand beaches below.

Glacier Walks from Skaftafell

The Skaftafell National Park is about 5 hours drive from Reykjavík. In Skaftafell we have a sales office close to the the Visitor Centre which is the starting point for our tours there. The Glacier Walks are the most popular tours all year round. They come in different length and difficulty and are available from the age of 10 years. In winter glacier hike with an Ice Cave visit become travellers' favourite choice.

Tour Description

A glacier hike is a very special and unique adventure, as glaciers retreat worldwide, there is a sense of being in a very precious place. With the rapid rate of climate change who knows whether our grandchildren or even our children, will be able to enjoy this?

Beautiful glacier hiking tour Iceland

A beautiful Solheimajokull glacier Iceland

Solheimajokull Glacier Hike

First of all, your qualified glacier guide will introduce you to the equipment and give you all the safety tips you need before you set off on a short walk to the glacier. Then you'll start walking towards the glacier.

The valley you walk through was filled by the glacier just a few years ago, your guide will show you how the glacier is retreating at an alarming rate, so fast it is almost disappearing before our eyes. As you walk across the coal-black volcanic sands you will soon see the grand frozen vistas of Sólheimajökull glacier opening out before you.

At the edge of the ice you fasten your crampons and your guide will lead you onto the ice to explore this otherworldly natural wonderland. There is so much to learn about this constantly evolving but an ancient hub of frozen water. If you want to hold ancient ice in your arms, here is your opportunity!

You will see how primal forces have shaped and continue to sculpt the glacier, creating mesmerizing labyrinths of ice ridges and steep networks of crevasses that trace their way through the ice. There are huge sink-holes, known as "moulins", which can descend all the way through the glacier, allowing the meltwater to drain onto the black sand beneath its enormous weight.

You will see the marks which have been left on the glacier by great the volcanic eruptions of the not so distant past. Ash from the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull found its way onto this glacier. You'll explore the magically rugged terrain, observe its amazing features and can even dring from the water, it's completely safe!

You'll spend about 1-1.5 hours spent on the glacier before heading back to the base camp.

Meet on location Information

If you select the Meet on Location option, you'll show up at Sólheimajökull Parking Lot 15 minutes before the advertised departure time (see in the booking widget). GPS: 63.530431, -19.370416

Sólheimajökull glacier is located about 28 km west of Vik and about 6 km east of Skógar. From Reykjavík, it's about 160 km and the driving time is about 2,5 hours (without stopping). After about 2h 10 minutes drive, you'll turn left to take road 221 to the base. Please note that weather and road conditions can affect the driving duration so please allow for extra time in winter conditions.

For those choosing the tour with transfer from and to Reykjavik

If you purchase the tour with Reykjavík transfer, your adventure starts as you are picked up in the capital city at your selected location. Your journey will take you along the picturesque south coast of Iceland.   On our way to the glacier and back to Reykjavík, we will stop at some of Iceland's most beautiful natural attractions. The whole tour with transportation included takes about 11-12 hours. The hiking part of the tour is about 2 hours with 1-1.5 hours spent on the glacier.

Skógafossand Seljalandsfoss waterfalls

Both cascades are iconic Icelandic waterfalls. They can be seen on postcards and viral Instagram pictures, they have become the country's most visited tourist destinations. Seljalandsfoss is known as the waterfall you can walk behind and believe us when we say that it's truly stunning the whole way around! Having its origins in Eyjafjallajokull volcano glacier, the 60-meter (197 ft) high Seljalandsfoss is will freshen up your face with a glacier drizzle!

Skogafoss is equally stunning and even more powerful than Seljalandsfoss. It is the same as high as Seljalandsfoss, but the cascade is much wider, about 25 meters (82 ft). You cannot walk behind this one, but you can walk up to its top to admire the landscape from there. The climb is truly worth it!

Reynisfjara Volcanic Beach

Reynisfjara Beach is one of the most well-known black sanded beaches in the whole world. This is a place of wild and dramatic beauty where the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean power ashore with tremendous force. Reynisfjara has been repeatedly appearing on the top lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it is very easy to see why it was chosen!

The recommended equipment list for Glacier Experience:

  • Waterproof jacket and pants (We do have rental clothing available in the booking process)
  • Hiking boots (Available for rent, 1000 isk. We advise against runners or any type of shoe that comes up below the ankle bone as the straps on the crampons can get a bit painful during the walk)
  • Light sweater, wool or fleece
  • Light synthetic or quick dry pants (Try and stay clear of jeans on the longer trips as they get wet & cold quick and dry slow)
  • Thin Gloves
  • Small Backpack (Can be handy to carry camera, rain gear and all extras)
  • Sunglasses and sun protection (It can get quite bright on the ice with the reflection)
  • Food and drinks (Lunch is not provided on any of our trips. June - September there is plenty of fresh water on the glacier so bring a bottle)
  • Camera (If you forget everything else don´t forget that)

It’s such a great tour, highly recommended to directly book with company! Ann, staff helped me booking the tour just late evening before date of our trip because the agency had failed the booking (months advance booking but inform failure of booking in the morning of the day before the tour date). Thor, the guide of our trip, is professional, nice, funny, careful and very kind to my mother-in-law and her friend who senior with age of 68-70. We also have nice accompanies from Poland. Thank you everyone for the good experience.

It was a great experience. This tour really made the trip for us. AJ was our tour guide and he was extremely personable, experienced and insightful in ice cave and Iceland in general, being a local himself. He had lot of fun stories and facts, and kept us engaged right from the get go in the jeep ride. The ice cave was spectacular, we would never have learnt or experienced Iceland in this eyeopening manner if not for the tour. It was important because it was not only aesthetic, but also bore great responsibility on us to take care of the planet seeing how global warming is affecting nature. AJ gave us an extremely humorous and knowledgeable geology session after the ice cave. He has great photography skills on his Nokia too. Anyone would be lucky to have AJ as the tour guide. It would have been better if the time spent in the ice cave was longer as it was shorter than expected!

Where to begin! This was absolutely the best trip of my life. I’ve been planning this trip since September of 2023. Guide to Iceland had so much helpful information about the country that assisted in knowing what to expect. If I had any questions they were quick in responding. I did encounter a couple hiccups which I feel was partially out of their control, however they were quick in fixing the situation. I unfortunately didn’t get to see the Northern Lights, nor was I able to do one thing on my journey the way they planned it and it being closed on the day they planned it on the itinerary. Just gives me a reason to come back, so I made peace with it. I’d recommend this and using them to assist in making your dream a reality.

I definitely recommend this tour, it was awesome. Everything was great thanks to our tour guide Mika. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about Iceland that he passed it on to us. He took us to more sites than were scheduled and that made the distances hardly felt. All the sites we visited were wonderful and we had plenty of time to enjoy them. I loved everything, but especially the ice cave and walking on the ice to get there. Being on the tour reminded me what an adventure life is... it was an unforgettable experience.

Ice caves in Iceland

Iceland is often hailed as a land of stark contrasts, where you can explore the ethereal beauty of a glacier ice cave.

Forged in fire and ice, Iceland is alive with primordial energy unlike anywhere else in the world. The geological and geothermal elements provide seductive sightseeing activities and visiting ice caves and ice tunnels is an activity which should not be overlooked while travelling in Iceland.

Iceland has many different caves, both well known and uncharted, but if you would like to visit a glacier ice cave, you are guaranteed an entirely one of a kind visit. Ice caves change from year to year, due to the movement of the glaciers and Iceland's ever-changing weather — and the unique character of each ice cave is an alluring call to adventure.

The incredible beauty to be admired inside the reaches of a glacier has a divine quality which, when combined with the geothermal power of Iceland, can make you feel like you are closer to earth’s beginnings.

11% of Iceland's landmass is covered with glaciers which means that an abundance of ice caves are found in the extremely thick glacial ice. These natural ice caves form when summer meltwater flows through the ice sheets, carving tunnels that can be explored during the colder months of winter.

Most often, all light is absorbed in these icy vacuums, rendering the caves in brilliant blue ice colours that are unparalleled anywhere else. Some caves also have what looks like black ice, where volcanic ash has landed on the caves. This natural occurrence is truly magnificent to witness.Ice caves in the region of Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, were previously referred to as the Crystal Caves. The sheer size of these caves liken them to an icy citadel, its heavenly blues and enchanting coolness evoking a real sense of awe. You will want to take a camera, but nothing can prepare you for the subject.

Most day tours which involve visiting a glacier cave in Iceland involve taking a super jeep up onto the glacier. There you will be fitted with crampons (studs which fit over your boots) and be invited to take a short glacier hike (less than 5 minutes) into the cave.

Ice cave tours in Iceland can be taken at several places throughout the island. The best ice cave tours in Iceland take place at Vatnajokull glacier in Skaftafell National Park. Closer to Reykjavik, and extremely close to Vik, the ice caves in Myradsjokull glacier are popular among travellers. The meeting point for this day tour is at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, from where you embark on the super jeep journey.

There are also tours of man-made ice tunnels which have been created in the Langjokull glacier. Some tours are available year-round and those in this area are ideal for those traversing the golden circle. Nearby Gullfoss waterfall is a popular stop on guided tours.

This tour is dedicated to every adventure lover – we’ll visit Langjökull glacier ice cave, the man-made ice cave!

Your pick-up in Reykjavik starts 30 minutes before the tour’s departure.  A free pick-up is from the Central Bus Station (BSI), but you can choose the other (extra paid) designated pick-up point.

You will get the opportunity of a lifetime to enjoy one of the world’s most incredible wildernesses; Iceland’s second-largest glacier – even from the inside! Never before the Langjökull glacier ice cave was anyone able to see the beautiful blue ice at the heart of an ice cap glacier. No doubt this will be a truly memorable day.

The drive to Langjökull glacier is very scenic, and on the way, we make a stop by the Hraunfossar waterfalls. “Hraun” in Icelandic means lava, and the lava at Hraunfossar waterfalls came from one of Langjökull glacier’s volcanic eruptions ages ago. At Langjökull glacier’s edge, specially modified glacier vehicles will take care of the ride up to the glacier and the ice caves – and what a ride it is! You will have time to enjoy the stunning environment and view of the giant glacier. Walking INTO the glacier takes around one hour and is operated by highly experienced English-speaking guides.

You will be back in Reykjavik around 19:00.

Please bring warm clothes, waterproof layers, hiking shoes, a water bottle, and food. The meals are not included, but you will have an opportunity to buy various snacks at the gas stations.

This popular day trip covers three of Iceland’s most iconic natural landmarks: Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir National Park), the Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall, each site boasting its unique geological and historical importance.

Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is not only a place of stunning natural beauty but also a cornerstone of Icelandic history, being the original site of the world’s oldest parliament established in 930 AD.

The park is situated in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, offering a remarkable display of geological wonders.

The Geysir Geothermal Area is next, where visitors witness the awe-inspiring Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes, shooting water up to 30 meters into the air.

One of the absolute coolest day trips to try in Iceland is snorkelling in between tectonic places! Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park is a geological wonder that mesmerizes visitors with its crystalline waters and otherworldly beauty.

Carved by the shifting tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia, this underwater chasm offers a unique opportunity for snorkelers and divers to traverse the gap between continents.

Its exceptionally clear, glacial-fed waters provide visibility of up to 100 meters, unveiling a unique underwater landscape with intricate rock formations.

Day tours to Silfra Fissure depart from Reykjavik so you can explore this underwater world with an experienced adventure guide.

Snorkelling between tectonic plates at Silfra Fissure is another one of those adventures that should not be attempted on your own without a guided tour! You need the right gear and the knowledge of a local to ensure you stay safe.

On this Silfra Fissure snorkelling tour , you are provided with hefty dry suits, snorkel gear, and a PADI-certified dive guide so you can stay dry and warm while you swim in glacial waters. This small-group activity is one of the best day trips from Reykjavik for adventurers!

Another one of the best day trips around Reykjavik is horseback riding through the lava fields of Hafnarfjörður. This tour with Íshestar Stables provides visitors with an authentic Icelandic horse riding experience through the dramatic lava fields and beautiful green hillsides.

  • Distance from Reykjavik: Locations vary
  • Driving time: Most northern lights tours are around 3-4 hours

When venturing anywhere in the Earth’s far north, seeing the northern lights is a must (also called Aurora Borealis). Admiring the mystical northern lights is a bucket-list experience for many, and Iceland is one of the best places to watch this marvelous natural phenomenon.

You might not see the northern lights in Reykjavik, as there is a good amount of light pollution from the city. To see the northern lights while visiting Reykjavik, your best bet is to book guided day trips out into the remote wilderness of Iceland.

You can always look for the northern lights on your own if you have a rental car, but going with a local guide gives you a much better chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

The locals always know the best places to go at the right times, so it’s worth booking group tours for a once-in-a-lifetime experience like this.

Some of the top-rated Northern Lights tours are with Northern Lights Bus , Gray Line Iceland , or Rvk Sightseeing . The best chance of seeing the northern lights on your tour is during winter, and most tours offer a free return tour if you don’t see anything. Because we can never truly predict Mother Nature!

Landmannalaugar, nestled in the heart of Iceland’s Highlands, is a geological marvel and a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking unparalleled natural beauty.

Renowned for its colorful rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs, and vast lava fields, this remote wilderness in Fjallabak Nature Reserve is another one of the best day trips to try from Reykjavik!

Here, hiking trails wind through the terrain, offering panoramic vistas of volcanic peaks, moss-covered valleys, and geothermal vents.

The lava fields and the rhyolite mountains were formed by ancient volcanic activity. In this area, you can admire lots of black obsidian volcanic rock which is known for its unique and smooth appearance.

The natural hot springs are another draw of Landmannalaugar, as is Sigöldugljúfur which is a dramatic canyon known as The Valley of Tears.

There are lots of incredible things to see and do, but the terrain is very rugged so the best option for travelers is booking a 4WD tour or a guided trek. Glaciers and Waterfalls ehf and Try Iceland Tours both offer action-packed, full-day tours of the area that include the best waterfalls, mountains, hot springs, lava fields, and more.

A highlight of the peninsula is the Seltún Geothermal Area, a space filled with vivid hues of red, yellow, and green, steaming fumaroles, and hot springs.

Geldingadalir Valley is another hotspot here with cool walks and hiking trails. The valley gained worldwide attention in 2021 with the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall Volcano.

Visitors can also check out the Reykjanes Lighthouse and the Bridge Between Continents, the latter of which spans the narrow fissure where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge.

Explore the Reykjanes Peninsula by either renting a car and doing a road trip around the area, or joining a guided tour !

Another one of the coolest day trips from the city is Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon on the southeastern coast of Iceland.

Fed by the Vatnajökull Glacier, Europe’s largest ice cap, this otherworldly lagoon showcases a mesmerizing array of icebergs, sculpted by the relentless forces of nature.

A bit further along the coast from this stunning glacier is Diamond Beach, and most day trips combine the two natural attractions into one tour.

Named for the glistening icebergs that wash ashore from the nearby lagoon, Diamond Beach is covered in countless crystalline fragments, resembling diamonds strewn upon black volcanic sands.

Another fun day trip to try when you visit Reykjavik is whale watching! Anyone interested in animals and marine life should definitely book a whale watching cruise that takes you around the icy waters and gives you the chance to spot these majestic giants frolicking in the ocean.

April to late September or early October is the best time for whale watching tours from Reykjavik, with June, July and August being the absolute best months.

There is nothing quite as spectacular as touring the North Atlantic Ocean and admiring the humpback whales, minke whales, porpoises, and dolphins in their natural habitat.

Combine your whale watching tour with a visit to the Whales of Iceland Exhibition located in Reykjavik Harbour. This is a super cool place to learn more about whales in Iceland!
