European Christmas Markets by train itinerary

Winter is approaching, and European cities are preparing for the most special time of the year. If you want to get into the Christmas mood,  Europe is the place . Its Christmas markets just open at the  end of November  and welcome you with delicious food and drinks, souvenirs, and a magical atmosphere.

I took my time to visit all the Christmas markets I included in this itinerary and traveled on the train routes between the cities. I visited each city and rated the Christmas markets, atmosphere, and food.

Based on my experience , I’ve created this itinerary so you can also experience the best European Christmas markets this winter.

✈ Travel Resources For Your Trip ✈

Here are some of my favorite travel resources I use for my travel adventures.

Overview Of The European Christmas Markets By Train: Full Itinerary

This itinerary will also take you to the most beautiful European cities . So that it doesn’t get too boring for you in the middle of the way, only seeing Christmas stuff.

I’ve planned  one day in each city , which is enough to explore their Christmas markets. On the other day, you’ll travel by train between each destination. The cities are close to each other, but train rides are longer. So plan accordingly.

PRO TIP:  Spend  the second day exploring each city , and take a train to the other destination in the afternoon/towards the evening. This way, you’ll get the most out of each city on this itinerary.

European Christmas Markets Map

Here is a map of this itinerary. Save it to your phone and follow it once you’re traveling:

Why Are European Christmas Markets Special?

Christmas Markets originally come from Germany , so it’s the epicenter of the most beautiful Christmas Markets in the world.

Imagine cute wooden huts with various smells , from delicious sausages, soups, sweets, hot chocolate , and the famous mulled wine . These are usually in a square in the middle of a city.

Besides, everything is decorated with Christmas ornaments , and music plays in the background, bringing you into the perfect Christmas mood.

That’s why European Christmas Markets are so special; you must experience them at least once in a lifetime.

How To Get Around European Christmas Markets

We’ll  use the Interrail/Eurail Pass for this itinerary . For those of you who aren’t familiar with this pass:

Interrail and Eurail Pass is a train pass to travel through Europe. You can choose the number of days you want to travel within a month. It can be on a flexible schedule or consecutive days . With Eurail Pass, you must also select countries you’ll travel to.

DIFFERENCE INTERRAIL PASS & EURAIL PASS

✅ Interrail Pass = for European citizens ✅ Eurail Pass   = for non-European citizens

728*90

European Christmas Markets With Interrail Pass

For our Christmas markets itinerary, we’ll need the  5-day Interrail Pass on flexible days  within 1 month . This will cover our train rides from one city to another as we’ll have four travel days out of the 9-day itinerary.

To  use up the 5th travel day , you can travel from Brussels (end destination) to the airport or to 1 more European city you want to see.

➡ Get 5-Day Interrail Pass Here & Learn More

European Christmas Markets With Eurail Pass

The Eurail Pass works slightly differently than the Interrail pass. You’ll have to select the countries you want to travel through. The price depends on the number of countries and distances. So when getting the Eurail Pass, insert each country mentioned in this itinerary:

  • Czech Republic

➡ Get 5-Country Eurail Pass Here & Learn More

🚇  NOTE:  With both passes, you’ll only have to  pay extra for the high-speed  and  night train seat reservations . All other journeys are included, so you can hop on and off the trains between the destinations on your itinerary. It’ll  save you a lot of money  and  give you much flexibility .

Travel Itinerary Planning Services

Day 0. arrive in bupadest, hungary.

Hungary, with its capital city, will ideally  put you into the Christmas mood , and you’ll feel ready to explore more.

So firstly, get to Budapest, Hungary, on the first day. Check in to your accommodation and take the first glimpse into the city in the evening.

➡ Budapest has some of the best flight deals in Europe . Click here for great flights .

DAY 1. BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Budapest Christmas markets are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in entire Europe. No wonder the city itself creates a very special atmosphere with the  impressive buildings  and lights reflected in the  Danube River .

You’ll get to try  local specialties  such as  chimney cake  (Kürtőskalács), apple strudel, langos (fried dough with toppings),  potato pancakes , fried sausages with local bread, stuffed cabbage rolls, delicious goose with red cabbage, or cured meat. Then, drink local  mulled wine  and tea.

You can also buy chocolate, handmade toys (local grandmas create beautiful stuff), and Christmas ornaments.

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Chimney Cake (Kürtőskalács), Langos, Potato Pancakes, Gulash 📍 LOCATION: Vörösmarty Square & Szent István Bazilika ✨ BUDAPEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 17th of November until the 31st of December 2023

DAY 2. TRAVEL BY TRAIN BUDAPEST ⇒ PRAGUE

You can take some time to explore Budapest in the morning . Then, around lunchtime, take a train directly to Prague. That way, you’ll reach Prague in the evening, ready to check in to your hotel.

TOP EXPERIENCES IN BUDAPEST: ➡ City Highlights Evening Cruise With Drink ➡ Full Day Spa With Palinka

How To Get From Budapest To Prague By Train

I recommend taking either  EC Train  or  Regiojet .

Regiojet  is a Czech company providing trains and buses around Europe. Their trains are very comfortable. And you’ll get a  coffee or tea free of charge , so go for it. All train rides covered by Regiojet are included in your Interrail and Eurail Pass, which is amazing.

Use your Interrail/Eurail website to check the  timetables of the trains . Some are direct connections from Budapest to Prague. With others, you might have to change trains in Vienna.

Train ride from Budapest to Prague takes approx. 7hours & 30minutes .

🏠 Where To Stay In Prague

Here are my top hotel picks for Prague:

➡ U Medvidku Brevery Hotel – budget-friendly hotel – book here ➡ Questenberg Hotel Prague – mid-range hotel – book here ➡ Pytloun Boutique Hotel Prague – luxury hotel – book here

DAY 3. PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

The capital city of the Czech Republic has equally stunning Christmas Markets as Budapest. However, Prague has an even more unique atmosphere . You have to see for yourself.

Don’t worry if you haven’t had enough of the Chimney Cake or are missing any other specialty from Budapest, don’t worry. You can catch up in Prague.

Enjoy more food, such as  homemade gingerbread , traditional fish soup,  sweet dumplings  filled with jam, and pancakes. Then, finish with a  big jar of Czech beer , the most delicious and cheapest in Europe.

Central European countries have  beautiful handicrafts  that local grandmas prepare. Prague is not an exception. So it might be the place to buy some decorations for your Christmas Eve back home.

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Chimney Cake (Trdelnik), Sausage, Sweet Dumplings 📍 LOCATION: Old Town Square & Wenceslas Square ✨ PRAGUE CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 2nd of December 2023, lasting until the 6th of January 2024

Train ride from Prague to Salzburg takes approx.  8hours .

DAY 5. SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

Salzburg is the most charming city on this list, so it must be on our Christmas Market tour through Europe. It’s a  small town in Austria , close to the border with Germany.

And I’d say it’s more worth visiting than Vienna , the Austrian capital. So, if you are hesitant about which one of these cities to visit, you can make a choice now.

Go to the Residence Square , which hosts  one of the oldest markets in Europe . Then, walk across the Salzach River to  Linzergasse Street  until you reach the Mirabell Gardens. Get the best views of the Salzburg Fortress from the gardens and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere.

Sip hot  Glühwine (mulled wine), enjoy local sausages, and finish with delicious  Mozartkügel  (Mozart chocolate pralines) for dessert.

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Brezel (Big Pretzel – sweet or sauer), Kaiserschmarrn (traditional shredded pancakes), Mulled Wine, Hot Chocolate 📍 LOCATION: Residence Square & In Front Of The Mirabell Palace ✨ SALZBURG CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 23rd of November 2023 and finish on the 6th of January 2024

Experience Austrian Tradition Krampus

If you are in the region on the 6th of December , you’ll also experience a unique Christmas tradition in Austria – Krampus. It’s a parade of creatures called ‘Krampus.’ These are hand-carved wooden scary masks . Locals dress up and go to the streets and scare everybody.

It’s actually very creepy yet interesting to experience. The purpose of this tradition is to scare away all the bad energy from the places and people before Christmas and prepare for the arrival of Jesus Christ.

How To Get From Salzburg To Nuremberg By Train

Finally, a shorter train ride awaits us today, crossing the border to Germany . We’ll get to explore another stunning  medieval city , Nuremberg. In the evening, get to Nuremberg and have a good rest. Tomorrow, we’ll explore the city with its markets.

You’ll have to  change in Munich  to get from Salzburg to Nuremberg. You can take a  regional train  from Salzburg to Munich (blue-yellow train) and then change to an  Intercity train . Or take 2x Intercity trains operated by  DB  ( Deutsche Bahn – German Railways ).

Train ride from Salzburg to Nuremberg takes approx.  3hours .

DAY 7. NUREMBERG, GERMANY

Nuremberg is a  beautiful medieval city  and, without a doubt, one of the  best Christmas markets in Germany . Stepping into the town, you’ll immediately feel the Christmas atmosphere and tradition. These markets have been around  since the 16th century .

This is where you finally have to try  mulled wine  (glühwein), local  Nuremberg sausages , delicious gingerbread, or Schaumkuss cake . Walk around the stunning medieval walks and enjoy unique Christmas atmosphere.

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Nürnberger Rostbratwurst, Schaumkuss, Dampknodel With Vanilla Sauce, Nuremberg Gingerbread, Mulled Wine 📍 LOCATION: Hauptmarkt (Main Square) & Rathausplatz & Next To St. Sebaldus Church ✨ NUREMBERG CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 1st of December, and end on the 24th of December 2023

Besides its charming Christmas markets, Nuremberg has a lot more to see. You have to  visit its castle , walk through the  historical walls around the city , admire its beautiful architecture, and learn more about the Nazi regime in the  Nazi Party Center .

TOP EXPERIENCES IN NUREMBERG: ➡ City Tour With Bimmelbahn Train ➡ Nuremberg Old Town Guided Tour

How To Get From Nuremberg To Brussels By Train

Our last train ride on this European Christmas markets itinerary will take us to the  home of European institutions ,  delicious chocolate with waffles , and more  craft beer . So towards the evening, take a train from Nuremberg to Brussels.

There is no direct train from Nuremberg to Brussels. You’ll most often have to change in Frankfurt. You can take trains from  DB ,  German Railways . They’ll get you to your final destination.

Getting from Nuremberg to Brussels by train takes approx.  6hours .

🏠 Where To Stay In Brussels

I recommend staying in the following hotels in Brussels:

➡ Marivaux Hotel – budget-friendly hotel – book here ➡ DoubleTree By Hilton Brussels City – mid-range hotel – book here ➡ OPO Hotel – luxury hotel – book here

DAY 9. BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

The  Sound & Light show   at the Grand-Place  (main square) makes the Christmas markets in Brussels a special place. The square is super charming, with impressive buildings such as the  Town Hall .

All the buildings turn into a different world during the show, and you standing in the middle of it will also be taken away. The show  starts at 5 pm  and is repeated every hour  until about 10 pm daily .

Apart from the light show, you can enjoy a big  ice skating ring  and  Ferris wheel  and sometimes see  animals in   stalls such as sheep or goats .

Hands down to the local specialties you have to try. Brussels Christmas markets will amaze you with delicious  Belgian waffles , some of the  best chocolate , glühwein, and  local craft beer . Don’t forget also to get  Belgian french fries , which are said to be the best in Europe (I agree, they are delicious).

🍭 SPECIALTIES TO TRY: Tartiflette, Belgian Waffles & Fries, Oysters, Genever, Hot Chocolate, Craft Beer 📍 LOCATION: Grand-Place & Rue de la Bourse & Place Sainte-Catherine ✨ BRUSSELS CHRISTMAS MARKETS DATES: 25th of November 2023 until the 1st of January 2024.

Budget For European Christmas Markets

The budget for this 9-day European Christmas Market itinerary per person ( mid-range traveler ) is  $1460 .

This is a very realistic budget for mid-range travelers who want to stay in nice hotels, try various local specialties at the markets, buy Christmas souvenirs, and do some of the recommended activities in each city.

Here is a breakdown of this itinerary budget for each travel category:

So the total budget for a 9-day European Christmas Itinerary by train , without restricting yourself too much and enjoying everything the cities offer, is $1460 per person .

NOTE: The budget will vary based on your preferences. You can significantly lower the cost of this itinerary if you stay in budget-friendly hotels and avoid buying a lot of stuff.

Do Trains Run On Christmas Day In Europe?

Yes , trains also run on Christmas Day in Europe. But they’re often fully booked way in advance as everyone travels to meet their families. Therefore, I recommend booking your train tickets at least 2 to 3 months in advance if you need to travel on Christmas Day to secure your spot.

You’ll walk through its streets hearing Christmas music, and the local markets are lovely, offering some of the best delicacies and delicious mulled wine with hot chocolate.

24 of the best Christmas markets in Europe for 2024

Sing carols, ice-skate, eat roast chestnuts, drink mulled wine and browse beautiful gifts in berlin, prague, strasbourg and more.

Christmas market on Marktplatz square in Esslingen, Germany

T here are hundreds of Christmas markets around Europe to choose from but only a handful that do it really well. Expect fairy lights, handmade trinkets, hot pretzels and glühwein in abundance, but also Santa’s grottos, fairground rides and live performances. German Christmas markets are probably the best known for tradition, but a Prague holiday or a city break to Austria will also delight those seeking dazzling architecture, unique gifts and warming winter comfort foods.

Christmas markets tend to start in mid-November, and some continue all the way into the first week of January. If you’re planning a Christmas market holiday, the best time to do it is a couple of months before, when dates have been finalised. So, whether you’re keen to try chimney cakes in Budapest or glogg in Gothenburg, buy baubles in Strasbourg or go ice-skating in Vienna, here are the best Christmas markets in Europe to add to your wishlist.

1. Cologne, Germany

Skating at the Heumarkt Christmas market in Cologne

Best for a variety of markets Long-favoured as a festive destination, Cologne has several Christmas markets, the largest of which is in the city centre, beneath the cathedral. Markt der Engel provides some of the most magical moments, with hundreds of twinkling lights suspended overhead like stars, and angels flitting between elaborately decorated gables. Nikolausdorf (Saint Nicholas’s village) is aimed at kids, and tells the story of the real St Nick, with the 13th-century Hahnen gate looming majestically in the background. There are even markets dedicated to mythical gnomes, and to maritime history, complete with sea shanties and pirates. If you fancy something a little more traditional, put your skates on and head to the outdoor ice-skating rink on Heumarkt.

2. salzburg, austria.

The Christmas market in Salzburg’s old town

Best for Christmas carols and ancient traditions The pretty hometown of Mozart and The Sound of Music comes into its own at Christmas, with snow-sprinkled renditions of Silent Night (the carol was written and first performed nearby) and market stalls that look much as they did when they were first set up in the 15th century. The focus here is on quality over quantity, so expect hand-knitted socks rather than novelty candles for stocking fillers. For optimum Christmas cheer, join the free daily concerts at 5pm in front of the cathedral, or belt out carols at the Tuesday singalongs (6pm-8pm).

3. Berlin, Germany

The Christmas market in Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt square

Best for trendy Christmas gifts and tobogganing For a more modern take on tradition, arty Berlin has it covered. The city centre is festooned with about 80 Christmas markets (there’s even one specifically for dogs), so don’t try to cover them all. If you’re after scale, Spandau is the biggest. For looks, Weihnachtszauber, in magnificent Gendarmenmarkt square, is the prettiest, with plenty of arts and crafts on offer. Get your pulse racing at Winter World, on Potsdamer Platz — it’s less about shopping and more about winter sports, with tobogganing, curling and an ice-skating rink with free lessons for kids. Go at 10am, when it’s quietest.

4. Budapest, Hungary

Skating at the Christmas market in Budapest

Best for ice rinks and Christmas illuminations Igniting the Christmas atmosphere in mid-November, Budapest brings two Christmas market contenders to the table: Vorosmarty Square and Basilica. Vorosmarty Square is tucked right into the heart of the city and is Budapest’s oldest Christmas market. Here, you’ll find plenty of food stalls, handicraft shops and free concerts. Basilica has all of the above, but with the slight edge: Christmas laser projections on the Basilica itself and an ice-skating rink that circles around a grand Christmas tree.

5. Prague, Czech Republic

The Christmas market in Prague’s Old Town Square

Best for open-air concerts and traditional nativity scenes Postcard-pretty Prague is perfect for the festive season. Make like a local and swap your mug of mulled wine for a glass of grog — rum, water, lemon and sugar. The setting is magnificent: on one side, the 14th-century twin spires of Our Lady Before Tyn; on the other, the city’s famous 15th-century astronomical clock. Between them swirls a glittering pool of seasonal cheer. There are presents aplenty, including frosted, hand-blown glass baubles. But it’s the food that will keep you hanging around: warm, fatty sausages just off the grill; fresh pancakes; garlic-and-cheese flatbread; all topped off with a glug of svarak, the local, citrusy take on mulled wine. Its cinnamon scent is misted over the whole square. If you’ve got little ones, shepherd them over to Old Town Square where you’ll find sheep, goats and a donkey waiting patiently for attention from earnest tourists.

• Best things to do in Prague at Christmas

6. Strasbourg, France

The entrance to the Christmas market in Strasbourg

Best for storybook scenery and sweets France ’s “Capital of Christmas” looks like a real-life nativity scene at this time of year. You’ll find 300 traditional market stalls crowding the city’s central squares, doing a strong line in hand-painted wooden Christmas decorations. Seek out the Market of the Invincible Small Producers of Alsace for sausages and almondy, fruity, brioche-like kugelhopf.

7. Gothenburg, Sweden

The ice show at the Liseberg Christmas market in Gothenburg

Best for chic vibes and mugs full of glogg Liseberg, Sweden ’s most popular amusement park, morphs into one of the world’s classiest Christmas open-air markets — no creaky ferris wheels, plastic Christmas trees or drunk elves here. You pay to enter, but you can stay until late (it’s open from 3pm-10pm on most days), snacking on smoked reindeer and drinking glogg (Scandinavian mulled wine). Make the most of the free children’s entertainment — it’s more impressive than corny. Visit Santa in his wooden workshop, ride bumper cars, and don’t miss the glittering, half-hour ice show.

8. Bratislava, Slovakia

Christmas market in Bratislava

Best for wooden toys and foodie treats Christmas in the Slovakian capital is a time of childlike wonder. Fairy lights are draped around trees, while market stalls sell traditional wooden toys and handsome decorations. Foodie treats include pancakes, sausages and cakes.

9. Bohemia, Czech Republic

Christmas market stalls in the square of Cesky Krumlov in Bohemia

Best for Christmas atmosphere and beautiful architecture In search of Christmas decorations and Christmas lights beyond Prague? Head for the southern Bohemian cities of Ceske Budejovice and Cesky Krumlov and you’ll find two of the most atmospheric markets in Europe. The city-centre square of Ceske Budejovice, with its mixture of gothic and classical architecture, is home to a cavalcade of bustling market stalls selling wooden toys, Christmas decorations and glasses of spicy mulled wine. Cesky Krumlov is pure Disney, unspoiled and beautifully baroque, sitting beneath a romantic-looking castle. You’ll find the market stalls in the town hall square, where fairy lights and Christmas decorations twinkle, and the aroma of freshly baked cookies and grilled sausages floats through the open air.

10. Vienna, Austria

The Christmas market on Stephansplatz square in Vienna

Best for skating rinks and traditional toys Come Christmas and Vienna sparkles with fairy lights. Snowy streets glow as light spills out from vast palaces; icicles dangle off grandiose Habsburg buildings. Add in steaming drinks in made-to-linger coffee houses and you’ve got a city full of festive atmosphere that doesn’t feel twee. Myriad Christmas markets spread out along the narrow streets of the old town, offering stalls overflowing with traditional wooden toys and artisanal goods such as handmade soaps. Invigorate yourself with steaming mugs of mulled wine while the chill of the open air is warmed by the bracing aroma of roasted chestnuts and freshly baked pretzels.

11. Copenhagen, Denmark

Nyhavn Christmas market in Copenhagen

Best for ferris wheel rides and Christmas hygge The markets of Copenhagen pulsate with festive joy as Christmas trees, decorations and lights add their patchwork of seasonal colour, alongside market stalls selling wooden toys, ceramics, decorations and chunky knitwear. The city centre is home to several markets, but it’s the Christmas market at Tivoli Gardens that is Copenhagen’s beating heart (others claim Nyhavn as the Christmas star). A ferris wheel spins in the evening darkness and fairy lights are draped on leafless trees, while a skating rink attracts the adventurous. Add to this the toasty aroma of caramelised almonds and the fragrant scent of cinnamon-infused mulled wine (locally known as glogg) and you’ll find yourself in the midst of Christmas market joy.

12. Tallinn, Estonia

Christmas market in Tallinn

Best for musical groups and dance troupes Considered one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, Tallinn ’s festive offering is a striking affair, set in the heart of its beautiful, medieval town, where rooftops and cobblestones are dusted with snow. Come winter, Town Hall Square is packed — not just with over 60 wooden stalls, selling handmade wreaths, local arts and crafts, sweets, honey and sheepskin rugs — but also with brass bands, bell ringers, and endless dance troupes. Arriving at his winter grotto on an authentic reindeer sleigh, Santa is on hand to welcome children to the festivities, before they rush off for a whirl on the merry-go-round. Estonia’s biggest Christmas tree has been set up in front of the town hall each year since 1441, making it one of the very first to be displayed anywhere in Europe.

14. Basel, Switzerland

Christmas market at Munsterplatz in Basel

Best for foodie delights and fairy lights Basel’s Christmas market is the biggest and most beautiful in Switzerland , with 160 meticulously decorated stalls selling a wide array of culinary wonders from gob-stopping sausages, and authentic Basel Lackerli (a local twist on gingerbread), to hot punch, festive fondue, and rib-sticking raclette to beat the winter chill. It’s split into two different sections at Barfuserplatz and Munsterplatz. The former offers handmade wooden toys, nativity scenes, and jewellery, while Munsterplatz’s fairytale forest is filled with fun festive activities for kids, from bauble-making workshops to gingerbread decorating.

15. Edinburgh, Scotland

The Christmas market in Edinburgh

Best for a cultural Christmas Undeniably one of the prettiest cities on the planet, Edinburgh really shines in the winter months as Christmas markets and Hogmanay celebrations come together. You’ll find Santa’s Grotto; an oval ice rink; fairground rides, such as the 60m-high Star Flyer; an elves’ workshop hidden within the Christmas Tree Maze; stalls selling wooden toys, Harry Potter-themed gifts, and mulled Irn Bru; special projections, performances, and artworks showcasing local talent. Bar crawl under the fairy lights of George Street and pop into the Scottish National Gallery to contemplate winter scenes. After dark, head to the Royal Botanic Garden to sip spiced cider and marvel at its Christmas illuminations. If you can only visit once, be sure to come at the end of December for the Hogmanay street party and stunning fireworks display on December 31. Don’t miss the ceilidh and concert in Princes Street Gardens on New Year’s Eve either.

16. Gdansk, Poland

The Christmas market in Gdansk

Best for festive romance and global delicacies In the historical city centre, Gdansk Christmas market is a magical winter wonderland with romance oozing from every corner — there’s even a spot that’s been set up so lovers can kiss under the mistletoe in the hope of having a long life together. Expect to see elf parades, a talking moose, the Snow Queen and her singing carollers; and enjoy a spin on the fairytale carousel. Shop for original jewellery, ceramics and up-cycled clothes such as hats and knitwear, or fill up on the wide variety of delicacies from around the world including traditional Polish cuisine (try pierogi). 17. Metz, France

18. Krakow, Poland

The Christmas market in Rynek Glowny, Krakow

Best for quirky touches You have to trust a city so dedicated to yuletide that it rolls out real live camels. But Poland’s picture-perfect old capital Krakow has plenty more in store. You can get your skates on in a snowy square, fill up on mulled wine and gingerbread, and experience sublime moments in serene galleries and candlelit churches. Start in misty Rynek Glowny, the largest medieval town square in Europe, inhaling aromas of sizzling kielbasa (sausage) from the Christmas stalls. Dominating it all is the cavernous Renaissance Sukiennice. Inside, ornate light fittings drop down like art nouveau anchors from the barrel-vaulted ceilings. At brightly lit stands, you’ll find wooden Christmas decorations and elaborate little cribs for perfect gifts.

19. Esslingen, Germany

Performers at the medieval Christmas market in Esslingen

Best for timbered streets and the perfect festive market backdrop Just 20 minutes’ drive from Stuttgart airport, Esslingen is a beautiful old medieval town with lovely markets. You’ll see locals in costume as well as the odd stilt-walker or fire-eater. It’s small and walkable, with great restaurants and nightlife.

• Best Christmas market river cruises in Europe

20. Nuremberg, Germany

Christmas market decorations in Nuremberg

Best for eco-warriors When it comes to sustainability, this popular German market is second to none. All mulled wine dealers work with a reusable cup system that saves energy and avoids a large number of disposable containers. The market is also supplied with regenerative energy from regional hydroelectric plants and photovoltaic power plants. On arrival, you’ll be greeted by the curly-haired “Christkind” who proclaims: “You men and women who once were children, be young again.” And she’s not wrong — it’s impossible not to feel a childlike excitement at the bright Christmas tree decorations, tinsel angels, wooden nutcrackers, and coloured stars. Foodies won’t be disappointed either with the aromas of grilled sausages, crackling pork and mulled wine pervading the market.

21. Seville, Spain

The Christmas market around Seville Cathedral

Best for an immersive festive treat The Christmas market in Seville provides an artistic, cultural and entertaining experience to get visitors in the festive spirit. 22. Zagreb, Croatia

Traditional fare at Zagreb Advent

Best for fabulous food Croatia’s capital hosts one of the most joyous Christmas markets, with several dozen all around the city. This being Croatia, the emphasis at Zagreb Advent is firmly on food and drink — although you’ll also find craft stalls as well as a giant outdoor skating rink. Start in the markets that fill the trio of parks in the lower town before joining the fun around Zagreb’s main Ban Jelacic Square. You’ll pass more stalls as you head towards the medieval upper town, all the while snacking on spicy sausages, sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), chocolate-covered festive fritters called fritule and drinking plum brandy and local wines.

23. Bruges, Belgium

Christmas in Bruges

Best for romance Bruges is beautiful all year round, but during the annual Winter Glow, the Flemish city takes it up up a few gears. The two Christmas markets in the centre — one in the main Markt square, the other in Simon Stevinplein — sparkle with Christmas gifts and food and drink stalls, and the romantic outdoor skating rink is draped in glittering lights. Watch the ice action from the warmth of the Vorst winter bar before following the mesmerising Light Experience Trail that fills the city’s squares and monuments with vivid colour.

24. Merano, Italy

At the Christmas market in Merano

Best for mountain magic In northern Italy ’s Alps, looking more Austrian than Italian, is the pretty spa town of Merano, whose Christmas market’s twinkling chalets run along the Passirio river. With snow-capped mountains as a backdrop, you can pick up homemade crafts, gifts, toys and accessories to a festive soundtrack of choirs and bands. Join the daily passeggiata as you stroll along the river, warming up with mulled wine and Sudtirol cakes and apple strudel.

The Ultimate Guide to Christmas Markets in Europe

Ultimate guide to the Christmas markets in Europe

The winter in Europe, especially the Christmas market season, is one of the most underrated and best times to plan a trip to Europe! We went on a 10 day Europe trip in December to go to a few of the best Christmas markets before the holidays and it was one of our favorite Europe trips to date (and we have spent A LOT of time in Europe). If you are debating planning a trip to Europe this winter, take this ultimate guide to Christmas markets in Europe as your sign.

The markets in Europe are amazing all year long, but there is something extra magical about Christmas markets. The cities will go all out to make them bigger and better than any other time of year. There’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit than a winter trip to Europe!

When to go to Europe to see the Christmas markets

Christmas markets in Europe typically open in mid-November and run through December, with some markets staying open until early January. The best time to visit really depends on your travel preferences because the weather will be the same throughout that time. It may be slightly warmer earlier in the season, but there are no guarantees. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, try to visit during the week or early in the season. If you’re looking for a more festive atmosphere, visit closer to Christmas.

We did our Europe christmas market trip the second week of December and it was very festive. The reality is that nowadays Europe is crowded all year long, and the winter is no exception with the magic of the Christmas markets. The crowds should not deter you from planning a winter trip to Europe!

Switzerland

Switzerland is one of those countries that is beautiful all year long, but the winter is unlike any other. It offers a charming winter wonderland setting for its Christmas markets. Popular Christmas markets include:

Switzerland pro-tip: Stay in a small town outside of the major cities to save money on housing! It is very easy to take the train or bus for a day to see all of the different cities. Our favorite little town to stay in Switzerland is Thun , which is a short distance from the Interlaken area!

How to choose which European Christmas markets to visit

where to go to Europe for Christmas Markets

Like I said previously, I know that list is overwhelming! Here are some tips to choose where to go on your Christmas market trip this winter.

Choose 3 cities per every 10 days

In our Europe trip planning experience , it is best to stick to 3 cities in Europe per every 10 days traveling. When we did our Europe Christmas market trip, we went to Florence, Munich and Prague in 10 days and it was a perfect amount of time in each! It would have been overwhelming to fit more cities into that time span.

There are circumstances where you can fit more cities in that time, like if you pick just one country to explore!

Pick one country

Another approach to plan this Europe trip is to pick one country and go to a variety of cities. This is an easier approach because you can purchase flights round-trip and take trains to different cities.

You can even choose a home base city like Florence, Munich, Prague or Vienna and take day trips to smaller towns to explore for the day.

Choose destinations that you want to visit for more than the Christmas markets

I’ll be honest here, the Christmas markets are absolutely incredible but they can become a bit redundant and crowded. It is important to also choose cities that you want to do more than just explore the Christmas markets to make the most of your Europe trip.

What to do at the Europe Christmas markets

How to plan a trip to the Christmas Markets in Europe

There is so much to do while exploring the Christmas markets in Europe, and there are activities for all ages and travel preferences!

First and foremost, shop! Christmas markets are a great place to find unique gifts and souvenirs. There are a variety of stalls that sell handcrafted ornaments, decorations, clothes, accessories, toys and food items.

Pro-tip: Pack a collapsible bag to check on the flight home for all of your overseas purchases!

Eat and drink

The food and drinks at Europe Christmas markets are truly some of the best! You’ll need multiple days to enjoy all that the markets have to offer. There are a variety of food and drink options, from traditional German bratwurst and gluhwein to international cuisine, and all sorts of delicious desserts!

The signature drink at the Christmas markets is mulled wine, which is typically a red wine warmed with a mix of spices. It is the perfect cocktail to warm up while browsing the markets.

Enjoy the entertainment

Many Christmas markets offer live music, entertainment and other activities for visitors to enjoy. Some of the larger markets, like in Prague, have a stage in the center of the market that have different performances all day long! Munich also had multiple tents set up with live music.

Tips for visiting the Europe Christmas markets

Europe Christmas market

Book your flights and accommodations early

The European Christmas markets are popular tourist destinations, so it’s important to book your flights and accommodations in advance. Housing most likely won’t be as booked as the summer season, but it is still smart to lock in your accommodation as soon as you know your travel dates!

Take advantage of public transportation

Many Christmas markets are located in the city center, so it’s easy to get around using public transportation. Munich’s Christmas markets are a great example of this, the public transportation is so easy to use and accessible to all areas in the city!

Learn a few basic phrases in the local language

While most people will speak English and you should not have any issues communicating, it is always polite to learn a few basic phrases of the local language. The local vendors will appreciate the effort!

Dress warmly

All of the Christmas markets are typically outdoors, so it’s important to dress warmly. Be sure to wear layers so that you can adjust to the changing temperatures.

The Christmas markets are absolutely magical, but they will also be crowded. Take your time and enjoy the festive atmosphere with patience.

Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

26 Best Christmas Markets in Europe, From Vienna to Zagreb

By Caitlin Morton and Jessica J. Lee

Traditional christmas market in Frankfurt Germany

No one does the holidays quite like Europeans . From December to January, Christmas markets in Europe blend tradition with culinary flair. Think wooden chalets in medieval squares, angelic choirs and snow-capped cathedrals , twinkly lights on trees, log fires, and perhaps most importantly, seasonal treats both savory and sweet, along with all the hot mulled wine you can drink.

As the days become short and the temperatures drop, town squares fill with locals toasting the season, and celebrating with friends and family. Why not join them? Whether you want the long nights of nordic winter or the more temperate climes of southern Europe, there’s plenty of fairy-tale festiveness to go around.

Here, in no particular order, are 26 of the best Christmas markets in Europe—from big city destinations to those off the beaten track (plus, where to base yourself when you make the trip).

Cologne Christmas Market

Cologne, Germany

Location: Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany

Why we love it: This market has everything you'd expect of a classic German spread. Glühwein, crafts, twinkling lights. One thing that stands out, though, is its entertainment—more than 100 stage performances throughout the festival, including Christmas swing music and gospel, puppet shows, and performances for children. After you've had your fill of tunes (and food), head toward nearby Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse, two of Cologne's well-known shopping areas, or make your way to Heumarkt for a spot of ice skating

Where to stay: Legend Hotel Cologne (0.2 miles away)

Tuomaan Markkinat in Helsinki's Senate Square

Helsinki, Finland

Location: Senate Square in Helsinki, Finland

Why we love it: This market scores major points for its mix of contemporary and traditional—as well as its commitment to sustainability. Though visitors can do everything from playing bingo for a vegan ham to watching a holiday outfit contest for dogs, it's not all quirky: Choirs sing Christmas carols on the weekends, and visitors can stroll illuminated market stalls while drinking hot mulled wine. Try some artisan cheeses or munch on candied nuts and jam-filled pastries. Not feeling Finnish enough for you? Relax in the wood-heated unisex sauna, smack in the middle of the market in Senate Square.

Where to stay: Hotel St George (0.4 miles away)

View of a street in the city of Malaga at Christmas. Is Calle Larios well known in Andalucia Spain

Málaga, Spain

Location(s): Muelle Uno, Paseo de Parque, and light displays on Calle Marques de Larios in Málaga, Spain

Why we love it: Want to escape the cold and try out a Mediterranean winter ? Head to the south of Spain for one of Andalucia ’s most famous Christmas market destinations. Stroll from the old port and Santa’s Grotto to Paseo de Parque to buy some local crafts. Nibble on traditional shortbread, nougat, and borrachuelos (wine-flavored fried pastries) as you make your way to Calle Marques de Larios to see the elaborate light displays. Best of all? You can even soak up festive cheer after the main holidays end, as the markets run into early January.

Where to stay: Vincci Larios Diez (0 miles away—it’s right on Calle Larios)

Brussels Winter Wonders Christmas market

Brussels, Belgium

Location: Grand-Place in Brussels, Belgium

Why we love it: Every December, “Plaisirs d’Hiver” takes over the open areas around the Bourse stock exchange, the Place de la Monnaie, the Place Sainte-Catherine, and the Marché aux Poissons, transforming the city into a winter wonderland . With more than 200 wood chalets, a covered ice rink, a Ferris wheel, and a light and sound show projected onto the Grand-Place, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy. Indulge in crisp fries with mayonnaise, tartiflette (a French potato casserole), Belgian chocolate (obviously) and waffles dotted with pearl sugar before doing a spot of Christmas shopping at the many stalls selling locally-crafted and artisan goods.

Where to stay: Hotel Amigo, A Rocco Forte Hotel (0.06 miles away)

Prague, Czech Republic

Location: Old Town and Wenceslas Square, with smaller markets at nearby Havel’s Market and Republic Square, in Prague, Czech Republic

Why we love it: Just five minutes apart by foot, Prague’s Old Town and Wenceslas markets are the best in a city that already tops our list of places to spend Christmas. (Chalk it up to the Gothic architecture and mulled wine stalls.) Fill up on traditional fish soup cooked in steaming vats, langoš (flatbreads) topped with cheese, and smoked meat dumplings. Don’t miss the roast ham and trdelník, otherwise known as chimney cake—a hot, rolled pastry rolled in cinnamon and sugar and cooked over a grill. Also, pack your hat and gloves: It gets cold here in December.

Where to stay: Four Seasons Hotel Prague (0.7 miles away)

Christmas in Tivoli Copenhagen Denmark

Copenhagen, Denmark

Location: Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark

Why we love it: The real-life inspiration for Disneyland , this twinkling theme park is the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world and beloved by tourists and locals alike. Come winter, it gets decked out in more than 500,000 fairy lights for the festive season. Enjoy music by the Tivoli Youth Guard while you warm up by a log fire. Kids can enjoy the rollercoasters before heading inside for family-friendly stage shows at the Glass Hall Theater and Tivoli Concert Hall. And don't miss delicious Danish treats like aebleskiver, small pancake puffs topped with powdered sugar, or honninghjerter. Similar to German gingerbread, this dense honey cake is sometimes filled with jam and buttercream and topped with a chocolate glaze. Hygge, indeed .

Where to stay: Nobis Hotel (0.1 miles away)

Traditional christmas market in Frankfurt Germany

Frankfurt, Germany

Location: Römerberg, Paulsplatz, Mainkai, Hauptwache, Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, and Roßmarkt in Frankfurt, Germany

Why we love it: Spread over the old city center and dating back to a winter market first held in the 14th century, Frankfurt’s Christmas market is one of Germany’s largest and oldest. Pick up Lebkuchen (Germany’s traditional gingerbread), roasted chestnuts and smoked salmon while browsing handicrafts to find the right gift for everyone on your list. From Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz you can find the city’s LGBTQ+ “Pink Christmas” market, where all the stalls are decorated in—you guessed it—pink. Be sure not to catch the chiming of the church bells or the Advent concerts that take place every December weekend until Christmas. Grab a bratwurst and a locally-produced Apfelwein (apple wine) as you take in the huge scale of this Weihnachtsmarkt.

Where to stay: Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof (0.3 miles away)

Christmas Market in Wrocław Poland

Wrocław, Poland

Location: Market Square and Plac Solny in Wrocław, Poland

Why we love it: While recent years and soaring energy prices have seen the range of light displays scaled back somewhat, the Christmas market in the main city square of Wrocław remains a destination for visitors from all over Central Europe. This classic Christmas market officially comes to life around December 6, when Santa Claus greets visitors and the tree lights get switched on. But you don't have to wait until December to start sampling treats from the wooden stalls: we're talking potato pancakes, bigos (hunter’s stew),sausages, pierogi, chocolate gingerbread, waffles (in various flavors), and all the mulled wine you can handle.

Where to stay: Hotel Monopol (0.2 miles away)

Christmas market in Trento Italy

Trento, Italy

Location: Piazza Fiera and Piazza Cesare Battisti in Trento, Italy

Why we love it: Each year, the cobblestoned streets of Trento, in the mountainous northern Italian region of Trentino–Alto Adige, are filled with Christmas-light-covered trees and 90 wooden huts, combining for what Italians call Città del Natale , or “Christmas Town.” Vendors sell sheep’s cheeses and dried orange slices below the 13th-century Buonconsiglio Castle, and the Alps in the distance provide an incredible backdrop to the whole scene. Don’t miss the city’s fountains decorated with nativity displays by local craftspeople and be sure to fill up on tortel di patate (potato cake) and jam-filled treccia mochèna before the evening ends.

Where to stay: Il Torrione (0.04 miles away)

Edinburgh's Christmas market

Edinburgh, Scotland

Location: East Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, Scotland

Why we love it: Adjacent to the Scottish National Gallery , this annual market turns Edinburgh 's sprawling East Princes Street Gardens into a “Santa Land” that you can witness from high above, atop the 108-foot-tall Ferris wheel, a.k.a the Big Wheel, and where you can scope out the view of Edinburgh Castle lit up for the season. Free family events in West Princes Street Gardens include a carols concert—and a celebration of Diwali too. Visit George Street for Edinburgh's Christmas ice rink; be sure to warm up with hot drinks and food afterwards. Indulge in Scottish holiday treats like venison burgers, Scottish craft brews, and hot toddies.

Where to stay: The Edinburgh Grand (0.4 miles away)

Dream Christmas Market in Vienna Austria

Vienna, Austria

Location: City Hall (on Rathausplatz) in Vienna, Austria

Why we love it: Some cities just look better covered in snow , and Vienna is one of them. Add some white lights against the backdrop of the city’s imposing City Hall, and you’ll see why this market is called the Viennese Dream . It has everything from reindeer rides to an ice rink for skating and curling, plus a ferris wheel and old-fashioned merry-go-round. Fill up on sausages stuffed with cheese, vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent cookies), and mulled wine. This is about as classic as it gets, folks.

Where to stay: Le Méridien Vienna (0.7 miles away)

Budapest Christmas market

Budapest, Hungary

Location: St. Stephen's Square in Budapest, Hungary

Why we love it: St. Stephen’s Basilica is Hungary's largest church , dedicated to the country's first king (Stephen, of course). It's fitting, then, that this festival takes place around the landmark in Szent István Square with 160 vendors, a skating rink, and weekend folk dance shows. Most of the action is in full swing before Christmas, but if you're there on January 1, stop by the fair for some lencseleves, or lentil soup—it's traditionally made in Hungary on New Year's Day as a symbol of prosperity for the coming year. And if you aren’t yet convinced, Budapest’s Christmas market was recently crowned Europe’s best in a vote by Europe’s Best Destinations .

Why we love it: This port city on the Baltic Sea boasts an unexpected claim to fame: Its Christmas market recently beat out hundreds of others to become Europe’s second best (see Budapest, above, for the top spot). The whole center of town transforms into a festive fair with over 150 stalls. You’ll find everything from nutcrackers to wool hats and handmade candles. After tasting Polish classics like pierogi and smoked cheese, you can indulge in everything from crispy tofu to fresh churros at its international food stalls. Kids can enjoy the Christmas storytelling sessions or even nature talks from the region’s forest rangers.

Magic Christmas market in Colmar France

Colmar, France

Location: Place des Dominicains, Place Jeanne d’Arc, Place de l’Ancienne Douane, Koïfhus, Petite Venise, and Gourmet Market Place de la Cathédrale (all six markets are in and around Old Town) in Colmar, France

Why we love it: With its timbered houses and canal-lined streets, Colmar is basically a fairytale come to life year-round. But tack on some twinkle lights, an ice skating rink, and an early-1900’s carousel, and you have yourself one of the most charming Christmas destinations in all of Europe. Each market offers its own version of holiday cheer, from nativity scenes to children’s choirs, so be prepared for some serious stall-hopping. And foodies needn’t worry: The gourmet market will have you satisfied with oysters and Alsatian wines .

Christmas market. Illuminations. Macerata.Marche. Italy. Europe

Alberobello, Italy

Location: Piazza del Popolo, Largo Martellotta, Largo Trevisani and Largo Pietra Ficcata in Alberobello, Puglia, Italy

Why we love it: Alberobello is famous for its mid-14th century “trulli,” conical white houses typical to southern Italy—and they take center stage at the Christmas Market Under the Trulli. Throughout December, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is alight with bright stars, moons, and snowflakes, all projected on the historic limestone walls. Wander the cobbled streets of the tiny town, admire the glimmering display, munch on cod fritters and pettole (sweet fried doughnuts), and wash it all down with a glug of vincotto. Don’t miss the “living nativity” scene in the days after Christmas—booking recommended!

Where to stay: Le Corti del Casale (1 mile away)

Christmas market in Zagreb Croatia

Zagreb, Croatia

Location: Pretty much the entire city of Zagreb, Croatia

Why we love it: Voted the best Christmas market in Europe in 2016, 2017, and 2018, Advent in Zagreb is pure holiday magic, mixed with a healthy dose of spectacle. Instead of being confined to one city block, Zagreb's festival spreads across the entire city: find traditional stalls in Trg Bana Jelačića (the main city square), ice skating in Tomislavac, concerts in European Square, and a live nativity scene in front of Zagreb Cathedral. Indulge in pork sausage sandwiches, cabbage rolls, and strudla—the Croatian take on apple strudel—washed down with a glass of rakija, a popular spirit.

Where to stay: Esplanade Zagreb Hotel (0.5 miles away from Trg Bana Jelačića)

Striezelmarkt in Dresden Germany

Dresden, Germany

Location: Altmarkt Square in Dresden, Germany

Why we love it: Founded as a one-day market in 1434, the Dresden Striezelmarkt is widely considered Germany's oldest—though Frankfurt and Munich have also tried for the title. Age aside, Dresden’s market is certainly the most traditional: think handmade wooden toys, a festive train for the kids, and boughs of fragrant pine decorating every wooden stall. The annual focal points here are typically the 45-foot-tall Christmas pyramid and the stollen, buttery fruitcake dusted with powdered sugar and packaged with a special seal depicting the city's famous former king, August the Strong. Don’t miss the market’s annual gingerbread fest on December 10th.

Where to stay: Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski (0.2 miles away)

Christmas Market at Skansen Stockholm Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden

Location: Skansen Open-Air Museum in Stockholm, Sweden

Why we love it: If you're looking to get really traditional, visit this open-air museum on the island of Djurgarden in the center of Stockholm, where all of the historic homes and farmsteads are decorated accordingly. Tuck into smoked turkey and sugared almonds at the market, or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, participate in traditional dances around the festive tree at Bollnäs Square and make your own Christmas decorations in the workshop. And if that hasn’t gotten you in the festive mood yet, there are Christmas concerts in the Seglora church each weekend. Make sure to catch the candlelit Lucia procession on December 13.

Where to stay: Grand Hôtel (1 mile away)

Christkindesmäkir in Strasbourg France

Strasbourg, France

Location: Place de la Cathédrale, Place Kléber, Place Gutenberg, Place Broglie, Place du Château (all near the city center) in Strasbourg, France

Why we love it: Strasbourg, a fairytale-like town in the Alsace region of France, becomes even more magical during the holiday season, branding itself the “capital of Christmas.” Its Christkindelsmärik (the oldest Christmas market in France ) attracts several million visitors each year, thanks to its charming wooden chalets, nightly concerts, and ice skating rink—not to mention all that foie gras and hot white wine. Make sure to try some bredele (Alsatian Christmas cookies) and don't forget about the city's other seasonal claim to fame: the Great Christmas Tree illuminated in the central square of Place Kléber.

Where to stay: Hôtel Les Haras (0.5 miles away)

Christmas Market at Winchester Cathedral Hampshire UK

Winchester, England

Location: Winchester Cathedral in Winchester, England

Why we love it: From mid-November to the week before Christmas, Winchester’s Gothic cathedral plays host to a carefully curated festive market. After checking out the region’s stunningly green South Downs National Park, you can head to the market to warm up. Fancy posh macaroni and cheese, a hog roast, or a rich Scotch egg? You’ll be able to indulge as you browse sustainable crafts, stationery, wooden toys, and garden decor. Sip a mulled wine and pick up some chutney and local cheese for your Christmas feast before heading into the cathedral for one of the renowned choral performances.

Where to stay: The Wykeham Arms (0.2 miles away)

Christmas market in Basel Switzerland

Basel, Switzerland

Location: Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz in Basel, Switzerland

Why we love it: We all know Switzerland is a winter wonderland , but it also happens to host some of the best Christmas markets in Europe—including Basler Weihnachtsmarkt in the Rhine-side town of Basel. The market features more than 150 vendors selling handmade toys and local treats like Swiss raclette and läckerli (traditional Swiss gingerbread) from their wooden stands, plus enough twinkle lights and trees to fill a million Instagram feeds. Don’t miss the view of the festive scene from St. Martin’s tower, open for admission throughout the Advent period, and be sure to write your Christmas wishes in the Basel Wish Book.

Stay here: Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois (1 mile away)

Tallinn Christmas Market

Tallinn, Estonia

Location: Town Hall Square in Tallinn, Estonia

Why we love it: In addition to Estonian Christmas dishes like black pudding and sour cabbage (it's better than it sounds, promise), Tallinn's market—a quaint fairy-tale village of stalls dusted with snow and twinkling with lights—also has a Santa who arrives by reindeer-pulled sleigh. The highlight, though, is its Christmas tree, which the city has been displaying in front of its town hall since 1441—making it the first Christmas tree to ever be displayed in Europe. Enjoy some gingerbread and mulled wine after taking a spin on the merry-go-round.

Where to stay: Hotel Telegraaf (0.08 miles away)

Christkindlmarkt in Salzburg Austria

Salzburg, Austria

Location: Residenzplatz and Salzburg Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria

Why we love it: Salzburg's famed Christkindlmarkt in the center of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old City isn't just mulled wine and market stands: There are daily choral performances, sing-alongs (Tuesdays from 6–8 p.m.) and traditional wind music performed above the square on Thursday and Saturday nights. You can even try your hand at baking gingerbread or head out on a Salzburg Christmas tour to learn all about the market’s history—while indulging in goodies like roast pork sandwiches and roasted almonds along the way. We're not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either.

Stay here: Hotel Goldener Hirsch, a Luxury Collection Hotel (0.3 miles away)

Christmas market in Sibiu Romania

Sibiu, Romania

Location: Piața Mare in Sibiu, Romania

Why we love it: Romania might get a lot of hype around Halloween , but the country embraces Santa Claus just as much as Dracula. See: Sibiu Christmas Market, a glittery sprawl of stalls and fairy lights located in the Sibiu city center. Here you'll find more than 100 merchants, Santa’s workshop, and an ice rink, plus a new 72-feet-tall Ferris wheel, a new addition to last year's market. Be sure to enjoy some mămăligă (polenta), cabbage rolls, and mulled wine—and don’t miss out on meeting Moș Crăciun—that’s Romanian for Santa Claus.

Where to stay: Art Hotel (0.1 miles away)

Christmas market in Oslo Norway

Oslo, Norway

Location: Spikersuppa in Oslo, Norway

Why we love it: Jul i Vinterland , located in Oslo's city center, has all the elements you'd expect from a classic European Christmas market, from decorated stalls to a tree-lined ice skating rink. But what makes this particular festival stand apart is the food. Be prepared for coconut cupcakes and caramel apples, gløgg and warm porridge, currywurst and smoked salmon from the Lofoten Islands —as well as a chocolate wheel to spin if you’re feeling lucky. As if the culinary delights aren’t adventure enough, there’s a ferris wheel and carnival rides to boot.

Berlin, Germany

Location: KulturBrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany

Why we love it: While Berlin has more Christmas markets than we can count, this small Scandi-themed market in an old brewery courtyard is a real neighborhood favorite. Blend in among the locals meeting for after-work Glühwein as you enjoy a piping hot Flammkuchen (German flatbread) topped with potatoes, bacon, and cheese. Test out Finnish Glögi and Icelandic Jolagløgg (or any of the other mulled wine varieties featured) before diving into raclette or Mutzenmandeln (tiny cone-shaped fritters). Kids can enjoy a hot chocolate in a yurt before taking a ride on the swing carousel, while adults warm their hands by the many wood fires dotted around the site.

When is the Prague Christmas Market?

The view of Prague's Old Town Square Christmas Market from the Clock Tower in Prague.

Like many European cities, the Prague Christmas market experience has proven to be so popular in recent years that more and more markets are popping up across the city year on year.

We’ve detailed the best of those markets below, but just be aware that each has its own individual opening and closing times.

Most of the markets are in business by the 30th of November, opening in time to count down each day of the Advent season.

Insiders Tip: All markets are free to enter.

Most of the markets actually stay open beyond Christmas day itself, and every Prague Christmas Market will generally be open until the first week of January, as they also love to celebrate the New Year in Czechia.

Some of the markets are increasingly beginning to open up earlier than the 30th of November too, and some will be open as early as the second weekend in November.

When they are open, every Prague Christmas market will be open from morning until evening, seven days a week.

9 Best Christmas Markets in Prague to Visit

1. old town square christmas market.

Market view of the Old Town Square Christmas Market in Prague.

The Old Town Square Christmas Market is the most famous and well known Prague Christmas Market.

It’s the most central market in the city, and its popularity ensures that it’s always going to be busy, right through the Christmas season.

But despite the crowds, you couldn’t ask for a better market to visit, and the central locations mean that it’s both easy to find, and it’s surrounded by the best of Prague’s historic buildings and sights within the heart of the Old Town.

Insiders Tip: The markets are the slowest on Mondays-Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Old Town Square Christmas Market is stacked full of rustic wooden stalls and small chalets, all of them brimming with Christmas goods, and serving up great food and drink.

There’s an enormous Christmas tree in the square, and at the start of the festive season, you can even watch the extravagant lighting of the tree ceremony, which formally opens this Prague Christmas Market for everyone to enjoy.

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog shopping at the Wenceslas Square Christmas Market.

Equally as popular as the Old Town Square Market, is the Wenceslas Square Christmas Market, which is actually found just a short walk away from its nearby neighbor in the Old Town.

Most tourists then will be able to easily visit both markets during their stay in the city, even they just have a day or two.

The Wenceslas Christmas Market is just as busy and bustling, but it’s a great place to really soak up the festive atmosphere.

Insiders Tip: The Christmas tree in Wenceslas Square gets lit nightly at 5 P.M.

LIna and David Stock Jr (America's Adventure Couple) kissing while visiting the Prague Castle Christmas Market.

Prague castle is one of the most important landmarks in the city, and it’s a must-visit attraction for anyone exploring the Czech capital for the first time.

This historic castle dates back over one thousand years, although its look and architecture have changed considerably over the centuries. Today, the castle is the seat of the President of Czechia.

Insiders Tip: We found this the best place to eat since it was mostly food stalls offering different eats that weren’t found at the other markets.

Prague castle is also home to a wonderful Christmas market during the holiday season, and the market starts in November and only ends in January.

St George’s Square in front of the castle becomes a hive of festive activity as market stalls are set up, with the castle as the most spectacular background in the city.

If you’re looking for a smaller, perhaps more intimate market to visit, then take a trip to Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky Christmas Market), where you can find a fantastic Prague Christmas Market.

Republic Square is also found within the Old Town, but it’s not quite so well known a stop on the tourist trail.

Insiders Tip: The busy times at the markets are between 4 P.M to 8 P.M.

That does mean that it’s easy to add the square onto your Prague Christmas Market itinerary, and you’ll be glad that you did because this market is best known for its food.

If you’re hungry, then Republic Square Christmas Market is the place to be, because here you’ll find all sorts of Czech culinary delights, from festive gingerbread to steaming hot bread bowls full of goulash.

David Stock Jr shopping at the Peace Square Christmas Market (Náměstí Míru).

Another smaller market to enjoy, once you’ve experienced the bigger, more touristy markets in Prague, is found at the Peace Square.

Peace Square is found outside of the Old Town, so that means that you’ll not only be exploring a lesser-known part of Prague but that you’ll be escaping the tourist crowds too.

You’ll want to take a tram here from the Old Town – another great local experience in itself – or it’s a thirty-minute stroll from the Old Town Square.

Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) Christmas Market is delightful, and you’ll find that you have all the authentic and traditional elements of a Prague Christmas market, but you’ll find that it’s primarily locals and a few intrepid tourists that visit.

Listen to Czech Christmas songs, indulge in chimney cakes or gingerbread, and try a few local beers at the Peace Square Christmas Market.

This isn’t one of the most popular Christmas Markets in Prague, but we feel it is one of the best and one you simply cannot miss. Most tourists just walk on by this Christmas market without even knowing it is there.

The Kampa Island Christmas Market is located just a short stroll across the Charles Bridge. On the left-hand side if you are walking to the Lesser Town Bridge tower end of the Charles Bridge.

This quite local market is charming with amazing views of the Vltava River in the Background.

Here you can enjoy the sights and sounds without all those tourists. Grab a hot chocolate or grog to sip on while you browse all of the stalls.

During the holiday season, Jiřího z Poděbrad Market is transformed into a festive Christmas Market, so it has to be on anyone’s must-visit list.

It is also one of the only Christmas Markets that charges an admission fee. But don’t let that discourage you from visiting, it will be worth it.

The Výstavište Holešovice Christmas Market is more like a fair within a conversion center. Its located on the Holešovice  Exhibition Grounds.

This is one of the best markets to visit if the weather isn’t very nice, since its both indoors and outdoors.

Best Food and Drink to Try at the Prague Christmas Markets

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog enjoying a cup of Svarak (Hot Wine) at the Prague Castle Christmas Market

Prague is highly regarded by travelers for its culinary scene, and the city is known for its classic Czech and Central European staples.

It’s cold in Prague in November and December, bitterly cold, but the Czech food is there to help.

Savory Classics

Local dishes are designed to keep you warm and to help you through the cold winters that the country endures every year, and you can indulge in hearty, warm dishes such as Goulash to keep you from freezing.

The Goulash is often served in a huge bread bowl, and the portion sizes will be huge at the Prague Christmas Market.

Insiders Tip: If you are a foodie you must head to the Prague castle Christmas market, we found different food offered there then at the other markets in town.

This is a meaty stew, mixed with vegetables and served as a thick soup that’s guaranteed to fight off the winter chill.

As well as this though, you can try local sausages such as Klobasy, potato pancakes known as Bramboraky and Sunka, a spit-roasted local ham.

Sweet Treats & Drinks

Best Souvenirs to Buy at the Christmas Markets

Handmade ole for-sale at the Old Town Square Christmas Market in Prague

There are lots of gifts and souvenirs to purchase at the Prague Christmas Market too, and you’ll need to take extra bags with you to bring back all the presents you might be buying.

Christmas trees are one of the most important components of a Czech Christmas, and you’ll see them all over the city, in all the major squares.

Most homes will have their own Christmas tree too, which means that Christmas tree baubles and decorations are big business. You’ll find many intricate and often handmade designs for sale at many of the craft stalls.

Insiders Tip: If you like it buy it! You will not find it anywhere else and it is not worth taking that chance!

It also gets very cold in Prague in December, and you might find yourself buying extra layers to keep warm.

Luckily, many of the stalls will be selling hats, scarves, socks, gloves, and jumpers, many of them made in a traditional fashion.

Unique Gifts to Buy :

  • Handmade Czech Christmas Tree Ornaments
  • Local Beeswax (Candles – Angles)
  • Handmade Wooden Toys
  • Special Christmas Market Mug

Best Places to Stay for Touring Markets

Hotels in Prague during the Christmas Markets.

The Christmas markets in Prague are simply magical however what adds to that magic is being based in a place that is festive. After all, that’s why you are exploring Europe at this time of the year.

There are a few factors that don’t normally apply when visiting Prague during another season .

One factor is the location to the markets, this is key since it is cold out and you don’t want to have to go a long way to enjoy the magic.

Two is the atmosphere offered at the hotel, I don’t know about you, but we want a place that also celebrates this festive season. This fuels the overall experience.

Keep in mind Christmas season is a busy time of the year for many hotels in Prague, so it is best to book way in advance.

If you don’t, you’ll probably end up way outside the Christmas Market areas in a haunted scrooge house making your experience not very magical.

Below we are laying out some of our favorite properties and locations for Christmas Market season. If you’re looking for more in-depth information, check out Where to Stay in Prague: Best Districts & Hotels .

Key Tips & Advice for the Christmas Markets

Old Town Square Christmas Market in Prague in the daytime.

  • Cash is king! Exchange your money into Crown or withdraw it before you get there. It is almost impossible to pay in Euros or with a Credit Card at the Christmas Markets.
  • The Christmas Markets are not the place to haggle, the prices are what they are so don’t try to get a better deal.
  • Spend your money at the local handicraft stalls, this helps keeps the money you are spending locally. Many of the local stalls have signed up stating they are a small business. You’ll easily notice the larger corporated stalls.
  • Some of the prices are based on grams, especially food like ham. This can add up quickly and throw you off.
  • Don’t touch unless you are going to buy it.
  • Christmas shops are there to sell, not to be photographed. So be respectful, don’t take photos of workers without asking and for those Instagrammers don’t take up a shop for a photoshoot. Some shops don’t want their items photographed at all, keep this in mind.
  • Wrap up warm when you’re visiting the Prague Christmas Market because it can get very, very cold in the city during winter. Take extra layers, and be prepared to be chilly!
  • Prague is an increasingly busy city, and the tourist numbers don’t drop because of the cold. Over Christmas tourism actually increases, and so you’ll want to be booking your hotels and flights in advance to get the best deals for your visit to the Prague Christmas Market.
  • Don’t just stick to the two major Christmas Markets in the center of the Old Town. As convenient and popular as they are, you can always find a more local experience further away from the tourist center.
  • Don’t just visit the Christmas Markets at night, visit them during the day also.
  • Don’t leave any of the Christmas areas with alcohol in your cup. Czech law prohibits open containers and it is forbidden.
  • Don’t miss out on the lighting up of the lanterns at the Charles Bridge. During December the Charles Bridge is decked out with gas lanterns. Works light the lanterns nightly between 16:00-16:15 dressed in historical clothing.
  • Take advantage of any bathrooms you find, most you will have to pay for if they are open to the public.
  • Keep your personal items close to you, the Christmas markets are a prime place for pickpocketers. Wallets walk away, phones, cameras, and even backpacks are prime items during this time of the year.
  • If you are exploring the Christmas Markets in Prague as a couple or a group it is always best to pick a landmark to meet in case you get separated.

Festive Delights in Vienna The streets of Vienna make for an incredible holiday backdrop to your market adventure. Chestnuts are definitely roasting on more than a few open fires. The markets here are an age-old tradition – some dating back to the Middle Ages. Visitors to Vienna can find more than 20 different markets to indulge their Christmas spirit, many of them anchored to the public spaces fronting some of the city’s elegant buildings. The Viennese Dream Market in front of City Hall is a holiday dream come true. The Christmas villages at Belvedere Palace and on Maria Theresien Square impress with culinary offerings and decoration stalls. Handicrafts fill the kiosks at Schönbrunn Palace, while the scent of hot punch fills the air. After a day at the markets, tuck yourself into the luxury trimmings at The Rosewood Vienna or the Park Hyatt Vienna.

Traditional Treats in Prague The festive magic in the Czech Republic’s capital city runs from late November to early January – the Christmas markets even open on Christmas Day. The main markets are situated at the Old Town Square and in Wenceslas Square right in the center of the city, both within walking distance of each other. The large Christmas market at Prague Castle in front of St. George’s Basilica is as pretty as a picture. Three smaller markets in Prague extend your festive list in a more home-style way. Expect ice skating, great foods, daily tree lighting ceremonies – even New Year’s Eve fireworks. The Tully Luxury Travel Designers will set you up in total comfort at luxury resorts like the Four Seasons Hotel Prague or the Mandarin Oriental Prague.

Holiday Magic in Budapest Christmas markets in Budapest run from the middle of November through to December 31 each year. There’s a real effort here to focus on Hungarian folk art and traditions through handcrafts and culinary offerings. You shop the narrow alleys, finding little treasures, drinking mulled wine and enjoying

Hungarian pastries. Concerts on market stages provide the soundtrack. The two main markets are the Christmas Fair Vorosmarty Square, the city’s oldest and most famous, plus the Christmas Market by Basilica, spread out in St. Stephen’s Square. The laser projections on the stone façade of the church make for an

eye-popping evening. The Ritz-Carlton Budapest or the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest are the Tully Luxury Travel choices for a holiday home base.

Are there any activities for children?

There may be a variety of activities for children, depending on the market, from hay bales to ice skating, and some have small rides or playgrounds. The main focus of a Christmas Market is the festive food and drink, crafts, and showcasing local traditions. But there's always a good chance of ice skating.

Are the markets wheelchair accessible?

The markets all take place outside and are wheelchair friendly although some are in cobblestone areas, which may be more difficult. If you require a wheelchair while you travel with Insight Vacations, or any of our sister brands, please ensure you complete the accessibility assessment prior to travel.

Are they only on in December?

Christmas Market dates change year on year and regionally. These generally start in the last week of November and will run until Christmas Day.

Do I need to carry cash with me?

This depends on the region. In Germany, Switzerland and Austria most vendors will take cards but in the Czech Republic or the Balkans then cash would be preferred by vendors in the market.

Are there washrooms?

This will depend on the market as they range in size. If a market does have washrooms, they will usually be portable restrooms and they may be limited in number.

Should I wear comfortable shoes?

Comfortable shoes are a must! There are not many places to sit down and the markets are set up for wandering, drinking gluhwein and shopping for handmade gifts and local treats.

Prague Christmas

Prague has one of best Christmas markets in Europe . The city’s cobbled streets smell of cinnamon and clove during the holidays. Mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, hot mead, blood sausages, succulent ham, barbequed pork with potatoes, sweet pastries, and other treats are everywhere.

The Christmas markets in Prague are the best in all of the Republic of Czech , an essential part of the country’s holiday charm. They illuminate the city and unite residents and visitors in a magical “winter wonderland.”

More than boasting a delectable assortment of food, the festive atmosphere is amplified by live music, showcases of artisan items, and all-day Christmas carols during Prague Christmas events .  Besides, during the month of December, there are numerous local occurrences and activities for foreign visitors to explore.

Czech celebrate Christmas

In the Czech Republic, Christmas is a major Christian holiday. Advent marks the start of the holiday season. Prague Christmas time is rich in fascinating traditions. Most Czechs celebrate Christmas with their family members and friends because it is a time of calm and love, regardless of religious affiliation. To celebrate Christmas, Czechs begin the holiday on the evening of December 24th, known as Christmas Eve.

Preparations for Czech Christmas begin four weeks before the big day at the start of Advent. Late November or early December is typically the onset. In addition to opening Christmas markets in public squares, many people start constructing their nativity scenes on Advent’s first Sunday.

While St. Mikulas (St. Nicholas) brings gifts in early December, the Czechs believe that Baby Jesus gives presents at Christmas. As such, most kids dine near the Christmas tree, anticipating hearing a bell that heralds his arrival. They also open gifts on Christmas Eve, a bit earlier than in some Western countries.

Food is also an essential component of their traditions. Czechs believe that what you eat affects your attitude and future luck. Locals may fast on Christmas Eve because they believe that the Golden Pig , which is deemed to bring good fortune in the coming year, will fly into the sky if they do not eat all day.

Some traditions , such as putting up a Christmas tree, singing the Christmas carols, taking a stroll, and even paying respects at a cemetery to someone who has passed on, still are widely practiced.

On Christmas day, most locals attend mass and then have a family meal after church.

Christmas markets in Republic Square in Prague

One of Prague’s most well-known landmarks is Namesti Republiky. Located between the historic district and the modern district, this square is the heart of the city.

Náměstí Republiky, just a short walk from Prague’s historic city center, is home to a delightful Christmas market. The Christmas market at Namesti Republiky is less crowded and, hence, less touristy than the markets at Old Town Square or other major squares. Items including Czech pashmina scarves, beer mugs, wooden toys, vivid prints of Prague, and also lace are all available at this market. The Republic Square is near the Palladium shopping center, close to Old Customs House.

Just off the square are some truly magnificent structures, such as the Municipal House, Powder Tower, and Kings Court Hotel.

Although small compared to other metropolitan markets, the Republic Square market still attracts its fair share of visitors. Its character more than makes up for its small size. It’s a local, cozy shopping destination decorated with modest, wooden stalls right in the middle of the city.

The Republic Square market has no more than thirty stores selling various toys, sweets, and souvenirs. It’s also a great place to find mistletoe, which is scarce elsewhere. Best of all, prices are far cheaper than other  Christmas markets in Prague .

Christmas Markets in Prague 2023: All You Need to Know

Christmas markets attract many travellers to Europe in winter, and the Christmas markets in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic , are often mentioned as some of the best.

If you are around at the end of the year, you shouldn’t miss this enchanting experience.

We have been living in Prague for many years, we have visited the local Christmas markets many times, and we still enjoy their festive atmosphere.

Prague is a beautiful city, but it becomes even more magical during the holiday season – especially if there is some snow!

This is all you need to know to make the most of the Christmas markets in Prague.

Prague becomes even more magical during Christmas time

The Christmas markets (v anocni trhy  in Czech) in Prague are spread all over the city, and you can find them in many squares and streets.

The most popular markets are located in the historic centre, which is relatively compact and flat, so it’s easy to stroll from one market to another.

There is no need to use public transportation – it’s quicker to walk than to take the metro or tram.

For example, it takes just a few minutes to walk from the market in Old Town Square to Wenceslas Square or Republic Square.

The most popular Christmas markets , which you shouldn’t miss, are the following:

  • Old Town Square  (Staromestske namesti)  – one of the best Christmas markets in the world – don’t miss the first ceremonial tree illumination
  • Wenceslas Square  (Vaclavske namesti)  – located in the heart of the city
  • Republic Square  (Namesti Republiky) – in front of the Palladium Shopping Centre (one of the biggest shopping centres in the Czech Republic) and near the Old Customs House ( Stara Celnice )
  • Prague Castle   (Prazsky hrad)  – great views of the city on the way up

But there are also many smaller local Christmas markets spread around the city that are great for a more authentic (and less touristy) experience, for example:

  • Peace Square  (Namesti Miru)  – usually the first market of the season, located in the Vinohrady district just off the ‘Namesti Miru’ metro station
  • George of Podebrady Square ( Namesti Jiriho z Podebrad ) – another market in the Vinohrady district, next to the ‘Namesti Jiriho z Podebrad’ metro station
  • Tyl’s Square (Tylovo namesti) – a small market in the Vinohrady district, ‘I. P. Pavlova’ is the closest metro station
  • Andel  – located just off the ‘Andel’ metro station, next to the Novy Smichov Shopping Centre (also one of the biggest shopping malls in the Czech Republic)

Christmas markets are very popular with locals and tourists, so they can get swamped – try to avoid weekends (especially in the evening) if possible.

Christmas markets in Prague - Weekend evenings are the busiest

You can verify the market dates on the Prague Tourism website .

Even though the Christmas tree illumination on Old Town Square is planned for 2 December, some smaller markets start earlier.

It’s cold in Prague in December (below zero degrees Celsius / 32 Fahrenheit), so dress accordingly.

If you avoid travelling during peak times at Christmas and New Year and travel before or after the holiday season instead, you can get some great flight deals.

Accommodation is also cheaper at this time of year as this is considered the low season (except for New Year’s Eve), so the trip can be made on a low budget.

Most Christmas markets are open every day, even on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Compared to the Christmas markets in other countries, especially in Germany , the markets in Prague are smaller, making them more charming and picturesque.

The prices of merchandise, food and drinks at the Christmas markets in Prague are also lower than in Germany or Austria, which makes them a perfect place for buying original Christmas gifts or decorations.

Go to the smaller local markets out of the city centre for even lower prices.

Gingerbread stalls will entice you!

Christmas markets play an essential role in the Christmas traditions throughout the Czech Republic, so that you can find them in many cities around the country.

You can learn a lot about the local traditions there – how to prepare local food, how the typical Christmas decorations are made, or listen to Czech carols.

The Czech Christmas tradition is different from the one in Western Europe.

For Czechs, the most important day of Christmas is Christmas Eve (24th December), when we have a family dinner (fried carp with potato salad), and kids get their Christmas presents from Baby Jesus (not Santa Claus).

The Christmas markets in Prague offer great value

Typical Christmas markets consist of wooden stalls situated around a decorated Christmas tree, with a wide variety of local Christmas products (most of them handmade), traditional food and drinks on offer.

The most popular products are:

  • Christmas tree ornaments and decorations
  • Handicrafts
  • Toys (especially puppets and wooden toys)
  • Winter accessories (hats, scarves, gloves)
  • Gingerbread

Bring some cash with you because some stalls might not accept credit cards, especially if they are just small vendors.

Supermarkets and other shops are closed from the afternoon of the 24th through the 25th of December, with most shops re-opening on the 26th for sales.

There are (too) many stalls selling trdelnik across the Christmas markets

Traditional local food is a big part of the Christmas market experience.

Czechs love their Christmas cookies ( cukrovi ), and each family has their favourites – the smaller and prettier, the better.

Try the typical Czech Christmas braided cake ( vanocka ) – it’s yummy.

While exploring the city centre, you will see the trdelnik shops everywhere – it’s a sweet pastry made from rolled dough. This is wrapped around a metal stick (trdlo) , then grilled over an open flame and sprinkled in sugar, cinnamon, or walnut mixture.

Even though it’s presented as a typical Czech product, it is not; it’s more of a product created for tourists. But it’s lovely, so check it out.

Meat lovers should try roasted ham (sunka) or barbecued sausages (klobasa) . They are usually served with a slice of bread and mustard.

Gingerbread (pernik) products are not only tasty but can also be a great gift.

You may get freezing after being outside for a while, but many drinks can help you warm up.

Mulled wine (svarene vino or svarak) , Christmas punch (punc)  or mead (medovina) will soon get you into the festive mood, while well-known Czech beer (pivo)  is a perfect accompaniment to any meal.

Entertainment

Many Christmas markets include a small stage where performances, especially concerts, occur.

You can usually see some craftsmen, mainly blacksmiths, in action and learn more about how various things are made.

Also, there might be a small animal stable so that children can stroke and feed a sheep, donkey or goat.

A bright angel entertains in Little Square, Prague

The festive atmosphere becomes even more special after the sun goes down and all the lights are turned on.

Walk around the Christmas markets and stroll to Charles Bridge for amazing views of Prague Castle.

There are always so many things to do in Prague – you can visit some of the many Advent concerts held in churches or other historical buildings.

You can also enjoy the winter atmosphere in one of the outdoor ice-skating rinks – try the one in the Fruit Market ( Ovocny trh ), located in the city’s heart, or the one in Letna, which is the biggest ice-skating rink in the city.

Where to Stay

We recommend you stay in the historic city centre ( Prague 1 ) close to the Christmas markets.

But if you find the area too busy or your budget is limited, it’s a good idea to stay close to any metro station as the metro will get you to the city centre quickly and there are connections every few minutes.

Airbnb is another option for those looking for more authentic local accommodation.

Final Thoughts

Prague Castle seen from Charles Bridge

We hope that we showed you that the Christmas markets in Prague are worth visiting.

It’s a great experience, and we can’t wait for this year’s markets.

If you like a festive atmosphere, you will find it in Prague in December – browse the charming Christmas markets, explore the stunning historic city centre, enjoy the Czech traditional food and drinks, and most importantly, slow down – it’s Christmas time!
