It used to be that if you weren’t in Charlotte to shake hands on a deal, you didn’t have any business making a trip to the Queen City. No longer. Though it continues to be a financial force (it’s the number two banking center in the U.S.) it's long past its stodgy reputation as a suit haven. It’s tough to say just what accounts for the change, but maybe it’s the world-class food scene that has cropped up, or how breweries in the area skyrocketed between 2012 and 2019, up to nearly 60 from seven. The city is also home to a bundle of world-class art institutions—the Uptown branch of the Mint Museum claims the largest public holding of Charlotte-born artist Romare Bearden’s work, and the Bechtler, the modern art museum designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, is in itself a work of art. Of course, there’s the NASCAR Hall of Fame, a wildly popular tribute to the sport, which draws those with the need for speed. So dump your old assumptions about this booming metropolis—these days, Charlotteans are as comfortable closing deals as they are closing down the bars.
