A Trek to Heaven

My friend Raman & I did an 18 km steep full trek to Baisaran valley (well known as India's mini Switzerland) in under 6 hours, a first for either of us. There is no other way to reach this place except on horseback (other than walk). The sheer heavenly beauty of nature kept our spirits soaring, overcoming all physical odds. On June 23 after an early breakfast, we decided to climb all the way to Baisaran, instead of on ponies, as majority of tourists do, despite the local people insisting that we would not be able to do the entire journey up & down on foot. We wanted to enjoy every bit of the scenic environment & take lots of pictures instead of being uncomfortable & anxious on horseback. However we hired the service of a guide, a young boy Usmaan to take us to & fro, as we didn't know the route; in fact there is no marked route, except following the ponies. The full Baisaran trek covering all the valleys & points viz. Pahalgam valley, Kanmarg, waterfall, Kashmir valley point, Dabjan valley & finally Baisaran valley enroute. There are two ways to do this journey, either reach Baisaran first or last. Most tourists on horseback are taken to Baisaran last as then the ascent is not so steep. Usmaan took us to Baisaran first. His senior insisted on us taking a horse along too, in case either of us had a problem in the trek & couldn't walk anymore. We didn't sit on the horse at all. The initial 30-45 minute climb to Baisaran is very steep & one needs to be careful, as path is uneven, often slushy caused by pony hoof marks, besides crossing many streams & rocks. Besides showing us the best route up & carrying our light bag packs, Usmaan kept chatting with us regarding the history of the surroundings as well as taking our pictures together. We enjoyed him showing us the sites on the way where many Bollywood films have been shot & telling us related stories. Our journey down took a shorter time. Our mini trek lasting under 6 hours was exhausting but still we enjoyed every bit of the wide range of breathtaking panoramic views, some of which I've posted here as pictures.

trek to baisaran valley

We hired pony from our Hotel, our tour operator arranged that so that we did not face the bargaining botheration with ponywala. They charged Rs.500 per pony. Baisaran in well known as Mini Switzerland. The horse riding experience may consider with the roller coaster. Nevertheless, it is awesome once you reach at top. Lush green meadows will definitely mesmerize one’s mind. , try to spend as much time as possible. One can take photo with Kashmiri dress over there but you need to bargain with them, they will deliver the photograph at your hotel

trek to baisaran valley

We went to this place through a daring pony ride but it was completely worth it. It is called mini switzerland by the locals and it looks like one. The lush green patch of grass surrounded but beautiful trees leading to the ice covered mountains. This was one of the best places that we visited in Kashmir. This is a must visit place... You can end up spending lot of time here and will be able to take amazing pictures.

Baisaran is very beautiful and truly mini Swiss! The Poney ride is costly and the Poney owners are a pain to bargain with. I do not understand why the government cannot fix the rates so that these Poney walas do not take tourists for a ride!!! A entire return trip will take you almost 3 hours, pass meadows covered with small white flowers. Pony wala will bluff you about multiple spots or points but all these points are in the path that leads to Baisaran. Baiasran is the final destination. Bargain hard with the Pony walas.

We took a pony ride from Hotel Hiltop , Pahalgam to Baisaran locally called "mini Switzerland", costing around 850 rupees/pony. The pony ride was little tricky and bumpy but once you reach there it offers a stunning view ~ snow clad mountains, lush green meadows. You are bound to mesmerized by the natural beauty here rightly called mini Switzerland, try to spend as much time as possible there. Tea, coffee, snacks, maggi (noodles) are all available in few shacks, in case you are hungry. Local vendors often sell their hand loom at cheap prices, which you can have a look out for.Overall I recommend visiting this place & please don't fear pony rides at all.

Baisaran is stunning but my next visit I would not take the pony and walk up the mountain so I can stop along the way and savour the beauty of the journey. A return trip by pony from town is a good 3 to 4 hour trip pass meadows covered with small white flowers, kashmiri man with his baby sitting in one of the hill basking in the sun, streams with water so clear I'm so tempted to drink. Baisaran may be the destination but the real beauty lies in the journey. Tips: the pony man will try to upsell you from the basic package of 1,050 rupees for 3 spot. don't fall for their trick, 3 spots or 5 spots lies in exactly the same route, no more no less. On the so called "extra 2 spots" they will just get the horse to stop and tell you "we are now in spot no 3". You could tip your guide more for those "extra spots" instead of paying unscrupulous horse owner.
