Frame and Suspension

The frame is constructed from Trek’s OCLV Mountain carbon fiber, making it incredibly light and stiff – ideal for going fast over technical trails.

The full-suspension design features 120mm of travel, giving you just enough squish to get through any unexpected bumps and jumps without sacrificing speed.

The fork has 120mm of travel, providing excellent handling capabilities that won’t falter when faced with challenging terrain.

Components and Drivetrain

Trek equipped their Top Fuel 9.7 model with Shimano components, an Deore XT drivetrain and 4 piston hydraulic disc brakes give you ultimate control on your rides.

The drivetrain has a massive gear range – a 10-52t cassette and 30t chainring – which will make climbing tough inclines much easier than ever before, while the powerful brakes allow you to a stop on a dime.

Handling & Ride Quality

When it comes to handling, the Top Fuel 9.7 does not disappoint; its relatively slack head angle makes it surprisingly agile around tight turns despite its longer wheelbase and short chainstays adding extra stability at higher speeds over rough terrain or jumps.

The rear suspension is firm but responsive enough to absorb vibrations from roots or rocks without compromising its cornering abilities or overall speed.

Overall Impression

We found very little to fault with the Trek Top Fuel 9.7; Its front suspension is well-tuned so it responds quickly yet still absorbs shock impressively well.

The combination of lightweight construction as well as stability provided by its geometry makes this bike enjoyable to ride both uphill and down.

It shifts quickly thanks to its Shimano drivetrain while also delivering enough power.

Finally, its powerful brakes make sure that no amount of descents are too tricky for you!

If you’re looking for an all-mountain ripper, the Top Fuel 9.7 is an excellent choice!

Rating: (4.7/5)

Trek Top Fuel 9.7

Introduction

Trek, a major bike brand, is known for its highly rated mountain and hybrid bikes. The Trek Top Fuel 9.7 presented here is a higher-end full-suspension bike in terms of components and is still very friendly in terms of price compared to trek’s latest slash series.

The lightweight yet sturdy OCLV mountain full-carbon frame is equipped with Bontrager XR4 vacuum tire combo and Shimano drivetrain, allowing you to enjoy smooth pedaling. The OX Performance Float shock and longer 120mm of rear travel can handle tougher terrain. Meanwhile, the 4-piston Shimano brakes provide confidence even on the descents. I can’t think of a better investment than owning an all-around champion. It will take you for a fun ride and give you the support you need to race.

If you want to know more about the riding experience, please stay tuned and subscribe, I will bring more reviews.

Off-Road Riding

Trek Top Fuel 9.7 review

The new topfuel gives you the confidence and control of a full-suspension trail bike and the speed and agility of an xc race bike. The FOX Performance Float shock and longer 120mm of front and rear travel make for a fun ride in the ever-changing and rough road conditions we face on our fast trails. I remember when I rode into a wild forest road, I felt more stable even on the descents thanks to the updated geometry in the face of the undulating road conditions. I also noticed that the topfuel has a shorter stem and wider handlebars to make it easier to maneuver the bike through bigger impacts during the ride.

Combined with the Bontrager XR4, 120tpi 29.x2.40” vacuum tires, it was easy to control the body squeeze from the ground. When I need more efficient long climbs and sprints, the Shimano 12-speed combo Shimano Deore M6120 crank technology is perfect for my local mountain terrain. It spins and climbs even the steepest of climbs, requiring only maximum adjustment of the derailleur gearing.

What also surprised me was the ABP technology it uses. When facing some fast descending, I don’t really have more confidence to ensure maximum safety, and I tend to use the brakes for braking. But inevitably, I would lose some of the effectiveness of the damping, and ABP technology can bring the shock to perform as expected, while avoiding wheel disengagement from the mountain road. I also noticed its Knock Block technology, which means that under the spin of a high-speed collision, even if the body suffers a crush, there’s not much impact on the controls.

Gravel Riding

In fact in the face of gravel road terrain, I think the experience would be best on a full suspension bike. With the popularity of gravel road bikes, I think it’s just a mountain bike variant. So, in my opinion, the gravel road review is essential for the Trek Top Fuel 9.7.

Dirty Sheets

For a more endurance ride, we headed to South Fulton County to experience the far-flung Dirty Sheets. And faced with a 20-mile gravel course, the Bontrager XR429.x2.40” vacuum tires with a 76.4-degree seat tube angle made it easy and enjoyable as soon as I started cadence pedaling. Of course, the Shimano 1×12 drivetrain combined with the Shimano Deore M6120 crank technology should not be overlooked, enabling me to accelerate easily even on some 5% upward stretching terrain. I don’t have to worry about dropping the chain when facing bumpy gravel roads, and the simpler 1× drive makes my handling easier and faster.

After noting that the bike has a long 120mm rear and 120mm front suspension, I thought it was redundance to handle the gravel bumps so efficiently. I had a great time riding for close to 3h, with no muscle soreness and no further loss of energy after a long ride. Moreover, due to the insistence of the body material on the more expensive carbon fiber, it showed enough endurance and sturdy performance even in the face of flying sand and rocks.

The OCLV mountain carbon fiber is equipped with countless times-proven active brake control that keeps you calm even under emergency braking. And with MINO linkage to adjust geometry and Hassle-free routing to guide internal cable routing, Top Fuel stays quiet on the road and maintenance is a breeze.

Main Features

Trek Top Fuel 9.7 Frame

It’s not just that the carbon frame is light enough and strong enough, or that it can handle friction more aggressively for the outdoors. More importantly, I noticed that the Trek Top Fuel 9.7’s unique geometry, combined with the 120mm of rear travel in a progressive trail geometry. It gives me a fast, responsive feel on the ride and helps me stay calm when the trail gets noisy.

Of course, the internal cable routing keeps me absolutely quiet on the trail, no dragging of hoses at high speeds, and maintenance becomes a breeze. In addition, the internal frame storage allows me to easily ditch the pack and still carry some riding essentials such as a tool kit and physical supplies.

And I have to mention the Knock Block technology, which, during my high-speed trail rides, did not cause much shock to the controls in the face of crash spins, even when the body was crushed. If I still have a complaint, it’s that I don’t have much choice in paint, although I like her ruby blue color, it’s too understated.

As a mature industrial product, the geometry often means more rationalization. The Trek Top Fuel 9.7, being an endurance bike, has been designed with less aggressive geometry angles. As I rode, the steeper 76.4° seat tube angle and longer 105mm head tube were evident. This not only improved handling stability, but also made some improvements for comfort.

In addition, the larger stack value, and smaller reach are designed to provide a more upright riding position. It is worth noting that although the Top Fuel 9.7 is an enduro bike, the geometry of the rear triangle has been designed to be very compact. The length of the rear lower fork is only 434mm, which is still very helpful for the efficiency of the drivetrain output when riding efficiently.

Components and Specifications

130mm fox rhythm front fork.

Trek Top Fuel 9.7

If you ask me why the topfuel series is so efficient, I have to mention its patented ABP fork damping technology. For years the majority of our riders have been faced with the choice of brakes versus damping. Although a variety of shock absorbing devices are available, the advantages of the technology will stop as soon as the rider brakes.

It’s because braking locks up the shock that TREK gave the answer to the problem with a fork assembly that incorporates ABP technology, which solves the problem perfectly. As we go through a bumpy section, similar to a rock garden, the technology allows the rear shock to continue working even during braking. It even says that for the rear tires, it remains stable against the ground and maintains traction. So you don’t have to worry about front fork loading and still maintaining body stability and handling as the bike quickly rolls over a rock-laden road.

Shimano 4-piston Hydraulic Disc, M6100 Lever

Shimano 4-piston Hydraulic Disc

For braking, there are often two extremes, either mechanical brakes or hydraulic disc brakes. And there are mixed reviews of them. But from a actual review, I have to admit that the more expensive hydraulic disc brakes are faster and more responsive, although that means a lot of pressure on your wallet.

In addition, the Shimano 4-piston brake provides another step up in braking power. It uses the sturdy M6100 brake lever design to provide extra support for intense riding, ensuring a smooth descent and a feel that’s not soft. On some of the harsher muddy and slippery terrain, you’ll have to take more effective measures, and better braking will certainly provide you with more confidence.

Bontrager 29.x2.40” Tire

Bontrager 29.x2.40'' Tire

I’m sure there has been much debate over the 29-inch wheel for years, so is it necessarily a classic? That answer is yes in my case.

I’ve ridden smaller wheels such as the 27.5-inch trek marlin, but to be honest, despite its higher rolling efficiency, I don’t feel any easier in acceleration. The Bontrager wheelset of 29.x2.40” with 115mm of trail length is more stable when turning at top speed without losing agility. I don’t think this is any worse than the smaller 27.5″ wheels. In addition, the 2.4-inch, 120tpi tires covered with aramid beads make up for the size limitation with extremely rough grip, so you don’t need to worry about the risk of drifting even in the face of slippery muddy ground.

In addition, the handling of air resistance is also more efficient than wider tires. So whether it’s ascending or descending terrain, everything is just right.

Shimano XT M8100, 12-speed Drivetrain

Trek Top Fuel 9.7 has Shimano XT M8100, 12 speed Drivetrain

For the whole industry within the big wave, the single-disc drivetrain with its convenient and simple speed adjustment, and upgraded greater power support, won the hearts of countless racers. The top fuel 9.7 is equipped with just such a Shimano 1×12 drivetrain, combined with Shimano Deore M6120, 30T crank technology, even if you are quickly up and downhill shift gears also seem to be smooth, with no sense of lag.

The shifting action is optimized to be crisp and responsive, and the feel is not soft, which can be clearly perceived on the rider’s fingertips. Perhaps the power support was strong enough that I forgot to adjust the speed to the right range on smooth, flat sections after a long upward climb. When in a pedaling dilemma, if you are as prone to riding obliviously as I am, I suggest you make sure to shift gears in time, because it is so easy.

Other Versions Of Trek Top Fuel

2020 Trek Top Fuel 9.7

Compared to the Trek Top Fuel 9.7, we can clearly perceive that the Trek Top Fuel 9.7 is made with a lot of room for upgrades. In terms of suspension travel from 115mm rear , 120mm front to 120mm rear , 120mm front, this is a recent trend. The longer consistent values for front and rear travel enable a more aggressive response to the harsh terrain of bumps.

The combination of consistent Bontrager 29.×2.40” front and rear does not avoid the soft tail letdown problem, but for endurance riding, only more efficient handling of bumps will allow you to ride far enough. In addition, Shimano-grade hydraulic discs are chosen for the braking options, but the version has 4-piston brakes for another step up in braking power. The range of drivetrain options continues with the 1×12 speed range, except for the version upgrade. So in terms of key figures, I’d go for the slightly more expensive and more modern Trek Top Fuel 9.7.

2021 Trek Top Fuel 9.7

Compared to the Trek Top Fuel 9.7, we find that the Trek Top Fuel 9.7 doesn’t actually make more room for upgrades based on the version, but is a more conservative continuation of the classic. The Bontrager wheelset of 29.x2.40” uses longer consistent values for front and rear travel in the suspension (from 115 mm rear , 120 mm front to 120 mm rear, 120 mm front). Although you may find it less interesting, it is very efficient from the point of view of more aggressive handling of bumps.

For the external frame, the front fork is made of the stronger Fox Rhythm 34 material. This is certainly good news for fast skimming over uneven surfaces and also reduces the wear and tear on the tires. In addition, the version of the 4-piston brake provides another step up in braking capability. From the comparison of these key figures, I would prefer the Trek Top Fuel 9.7 from the bottom of my heart.

What do we like about it?

  • The higher-end oclv carbon fiber material retains both strength and lightness.
  • Simpler and faster Shimano, 1×12 drivetrain is you easily through the forest road.
  • Longer 120mm travel to effectively deal with bumpy roads and faster response to harsh roads.
  • Hydraulic discs with 4-piston brakes are faster, more agile, and more expensive.
  • The performance of vacuum tires absorbs more vibration and lasts longer.

What don’t we like about it?

  • Less range of color choices.
  • Relative to the more expensive price of components.
  • What is the drivetrain of Trek Top Fuel 9.7 Review?

Trek Top Fuel 9.7 Review’s drivetrain is Shimano XT M8100, 12 spd.

  • What is the body material of Trek Top Fuel 9.7 Review?

Trek Top Fuel 9.7 Review speed body material is oclv carbon fiber.

  • What is the tire size for the Trek Top Fuel 9.7 Review?

The tire size for the Trek Top Fuel 9.7 Review is 29×2.40″.

Comparison Table

Marin rift zone 29″ carbon xr vs trek top fuel 9.7.

2023 Marin Rift Zone 29 Carbon 2

For the Marin Rift Zone, which is basically in the same frame, I think that in terms of performance of some components, both opt for the 29” size and both opt for the more expensive hydraulic disc brakes in this area of braking. In terms of handling bumps, the Marin Rift Zone’s 125mm rear and 140mm front figures would be more advantageous than the Trek Top Fuel with 120mm of front and rear suspension travel.

Don’t think that’s the end of it, it was obvious to me on the ride that although the travel was shorter, it handled bumps more efficiently. I thought and it Fox Rhythm 34 fork equipped with Float EVOL air spring and GRIP shock with more technology. This is good news for long endurance rides. Also, if you look at it from the outside, I think the oclv carbon will be stronger and lighter than the Marin Rift Zone’s carbon.

Santa Cruz HIGHTOWER R vs Trek Top Fuel 9.7

2023 Santa Cruz HIGHTOWER R

Faced with the more expensive Santa Cruz HIGHTOWER R, my heart was hard to choose. The same great 1×12 speed drivetrain, the same range of options with more power, and the simpler, more novice-friendly, classic 29″ wheels. The rolling efficiency or obstacle crushing and even steering agility are close to the same, and I even appreciate Trek Top Fuel’s 4-piston brakes for their braking ability.

Also, on a cosmetic level, I feel the same way about the HIGHTOWER R’s c-grade carbon fiber and the Trek Top Fuel’s oclv carbon fiber, both are a good balance of lightweight and sturdiness. And, if you notice the Trek Top Fuel’s distinction in component size, I think you’ll join me in choosing the more wallet-friendly Trek Top Fuel 9.7.

Santa Cruz HIGHTOWER R Review – Enjoy Rushing Down Hill

Norco Optic C2 SRAM vs Trek Top Fuel 9.7

2022 Norco Optic C2

Also, excellent is the higher-end 1×12 drivetrain for a consistent range of options and more power. The classic 29″ wheels roll at a higher rate and the 4-piston brakes add more power to the braking capability. Although the Norco Optic C2 is more expensive in terms of price. But admittedly, cosmetically it will look better than the Trek Top Fuel’s understated paint job.

However, the Norco Optic C2 is more streamlined and slender in terms of appearance, so I deliberately compared their materials. Compared to Trek Top Fuel’s OCLV carbon fiber, the Norco Optic C2 is a bit plain. And in terms of long-term endurance riding, I think it stands up to the test.

All things considered, the more friendly price, higher-end components, and stronger frame of Trek Top Fuel are worth your choice.

Ibis Ripley GX vs Trek Top Fuel 9.7

IBIS Ripley GX Eagle

In the face of the more expensive Ibis Ripley with shorter suspension travel (120mm rear, 130mm front), the efficiency of handling the same bumpy terrain is not as efficient as the Trek Top Fuel. In addition, the drivetrain uses the same range of 1×12 drivetrain. Each chooses 29″ x 2.4″ tires as their tire size. It has to be said that in the framework of a successful endurance bike, and this is close to a tie.

But I couldn’t ignore the more detailed design, such as the Trek Top Fuel’s multi-component size options, which can accommodate riders of all sizes. In addition, I prefer the Shimano 4-piston hydraulic disc to the Ibis Ripley 2-piston disc. I also trust the carbon fiber texture of the OCLV in the frame. So from my preference, I would prefer the Trek Top Fuel which has a better price and better component fit.

Flow reviews the 2022 Trek Top Fuel

The Trek Top Fuel has long been known as the American brand’s flagship full suspension XC race bike, purpose-built to to compete at the very highest level of the sport. In more recent years however, the Top Fuel has steered in a different direction. With the short-travel Supercaliber taking over duties for World Cup XCO racing, Trek has softened the Top Fuel’s serious, race-focused persona, adding travel and bulking it up in the process.

For 2022, the Trek Top Fuel makes its biggest move away from its XC racing roots. Equipped with a brand new frame, an updated suspension design and some thoroughly modern geometry, the Top Fuel aims to retain the pert pedalling performance of its predecessor while significantly boosting its all-round capability. So, has Trek succeeded?

Watch our video review of the new Trek Top Fuel here:

Along with the active ABP suspension design and chunky tyres, there’s an exceptional amount of grip and support on offer for a 120mm travel bike.

Trek Top Fuel overview

Despite being all-new, the Trek Top Fuel retains its position in between the Supercaliber (the 60mm travel XC race bike) and the Fuel EX (the 130mm travel trail bike).

It’s equipped with a 120mm travel fork just like its predecessor, but rear travel has actually lifted by 5mm up to 120mm. This increase has been achieved with a longer stroke shock (50mm vs 45mm), and Trek has also flipped the orientation of the trunnion-mount. The rocker link now drives the shock via two sealed cartridge bearings to improve sensitivity.

You’ll no longer find a dual remote lockout on the Top Fuel, which leads to a vastly cleaner bike with fewer cables occupying your view from the cockpit. Along with the bigger shock, slacker geometry and 2.4in wide tyres, it is without doubt the most trail-oriented Top Fuel we’ve seen yet.

To put it into context, that sees it move away from the likes of the Orbea Oiz TR and the Canyon Lux Trail , and more towards the direction of the Santa Cruz Tallboy and Pivot Trail 429 .

A new, burlier chassis

Though it looks pretty similar, the Trek Top Fuel frame is all-new for 2022. It’s not so much a radical overhaul, but rather a collection of many small refinements that add up to a more practical package.

The chassis is notably beefier than its predecessor, with the seat tube diameter swelling to the new-school 34.9mm size. As well as increasing frame stiffness, the fatter seat tube is also shorter, allowing it to swallow a modern long-stroke dropper post.

The downtube is also larger, and it now features the integrated storage design we’ve seen employed on the latest Fuel EX and Slash. A latch underneath the bottle cage removes the trap door, providing you access within. A neat tool roll is included with the bike so you can carry a spare tube, levers and CO2. You could also fit a lightweight jacket in there along with some snacks.

Trek has updated the Knock Block headset, increasing the available turning radius from 58° to 72°. This provides you with greater freedom of movement on the trail, but still prevents the handlebar controls from smashing into the top tube. If you’re not into it though, the Knock Block is removable.

Also nice to see is a threaded bottom bracket shell for ease of maintenance, and the rear ABP pivot can now be tightened with a cassette tool. Also new for the Top Fuel is guided internal cable routing – poke the cable in at one end, and it’ll pop out the other, no fishing required.

Trail-leaning geometry

The 2022 Trek Top Fuel has received a series of geometry updates over the outgoing model, bringing it up to speed with other boundary-pushers in this travel bracket. Here are the key numbers;

  • Head tube angle: 66°
  • Seat tube angle: 76°
  • Reach: 420mm (S), 450mm (M), 465mm (M/L), 480mm (L), 500mm (XL)
  • Rear centre length: 435mm
  • BB drop: 36mm

Compared to the old Top Fuel, the head angle has kicked back by 1.5-degrees and the reach measurements have gone up by 10mm. The seat tube angle has also steepened by 1-degree to improve the climbing position, while the chainstay length and BB drop remain the same.

The Top Fuel still features a Mino Link, but it’s now located at the lower shock eyelet. Bikes will come setup from the factory in the Low position. Flipping that into High will lift the BB height by 7mm and steepen the angles by 0.4°.

You can get even rowdier by fitting a 130mm travel fork, which will kick the head angle back to a very-slack 65.6° in the Low position. And for those wanting to push the needle further, there’s clearance to run 2.5in tyres.

Trek Top Fuel price & specs

We’ll see four Trek Top Fuel models coming into Australia this year – two with alloy frames and two with carbon. All Top Fuel models feature the same geometry, suspension design and travel. They’re all equipped with 29in wheels, and there are five frame sizes available from Small through to X-Large (the XS size with 27.5in wheels won’t be available in Australia).

Pricing kicks off at $3,499 AUD for the Top Fuel 5 and goes up to $8,299 AUD for the Top Fuel 9.8 XT that we have on test here. Additionally, Trek will offer a 9.9 spec via the Project One bike builder program.

You can check out the specs and prices for all those models down at the bottom of the page. Right now we’ll be diving straight into our experience of testing this bike here; the Top Fuel 9.8 XT.

This differs from some other brands that utilise a single frame, and simply up-fork and up-shock it to create a slightly longer travel bike (like the Specialized Epic EVO and Orbea Oiz TR). The Top Fuel is not one of those bikes.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt ben

Trek Top Fuel sizing & fit

We put the new Trek Top Fuel into the hands of our tester Ben, who owns the current Top Fuel and has also spent considerable time on the Fuel EX. At 181cm tall, Ben’s been riding a size Large across all three bikes.

The Top Fuel is well-proportioned out of the box. The 480mm reach is very long, but it’s balanced nicely with a 50mm stem and the 76° seat tube angle. The Bontrager saddle is totally inoffensive, and we haven’t needed to shunt it into an extreme position just to get it comfortable.

The 760mm wide riser bars are a great match for this bike, and while it may not be totally necessary for all riders, the 170mm stroke dropper post is fashionably long for such a short travel bike.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

Suspension & tyre setup

With the anodised sag gradients on the fork and shock, suspension setup is made easy. Weighing 80kg loaded up, Ben’s been running 180psi in the rear shock (26% sag) 80psi in the fork (20% sag).

The factory rebound tune for both the RockShox SID fork and Deluxe shock is quite light, so each rebound dial was set a couple of clicks slower than halfway.

Tubeless rim strips and valves come pre-fitted to the Bontrager wheels, and Trek kindly includes two bottles of sealant with the bike, making tubeless setup the breeze it should be. Pressures were set at 20psi on the front and 22psi on the rear.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

Trek Top Fuel weight

Given its swollen proportions, the new Trek Top Fuel has gotten heavier. With the tyres setup tubeless, our test bike came in at 12.88kg without pedals. To put that number into perspective, here’s how it compares to some similarly-priced XC and Trail bikes we’ve recently tested;

  • Canyon Lux Trail CF 9 – 11.22kg
  • Merida Ninety-Six 8000 – 11.63kg
  • Scott Spark 910 – 12.43kg
  • Specialized Stumpjumper Pro – 12.84kg
  • Trek Top Fuel 9.8 XT – 12.88kg
  • Giant Trance Advamced Pro 29 1 – 13.38kg

trek top fuel 2022 9.8 xt

Trek claims a carbon Top Fuel frame weighs 2.7kg including the rear shock, which puts it on the heavier side of things for a 120mm travel bike. The alloy frame is purportedly a whole kilo heavier again, with a claimed weight of 3.74kg.

The Top Fuel’s rolling stock is also a significant contributor to its overall mass. The Bontrager Line Elite wheels are heavy at 2,071g for the pair (with tubeless strips and valves). Incidentally, these are exactly the same wheels that came on the Slash 9.9 X01 , which is a full-bore enduro race bike.

Trek has also plumped up the rubber. The previous Top Fuel featured semi-slick XR3 tyres, but the new bike is now spec’d with 2.4in wide XR4 Team Issue tyres. They’re not overly heavy at around 800g each, though they do offer significantly better grip across a broader range of conditions.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

What does the Trek Top Fuel do well?

From the very first ride the new Trek Top Fuel proved to be easy to get used to, with no quirks to the fit, handling or suspension.

The proportions are significantly broader compared to the outgoing Top Fuel, with the front wheel sticking out much further ahead of the rider. Despite the long reach however, the effective top tube length is basically identical to its predecessor, so the overall cockpit length remains the same.

The steeper seat angle is noticeable though, providing an improved climbing position with your hips placed further over the bottom bracket. As a result, less bum-shuffling is required on stem-chewing ascents.

Pedalling performance is also superb. Despite its burlier exterior, Trek is still prioritising pedal efficiency with the Top Fuel, with the main pivot positioned high and quite far forward of the bottom bracket. Anti-squat is claimed to hover around the 100% mark, and indeed the rear suspension clenches tightly under chain torque, propelling the whole bike forward with minimal energy loss.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

Active suspension performance

Despite the trunnion bearing mount and the longer shock stroke, the rear suspension doesn’t feel radically plusher than its predecessor, which already offered great performance. It is noticeably more supportive though, particularly when absorbing square-edge hits at speed, and when returning to earth after boosting off a lip on the trail.

It’s worth noting here that many bikes in the 100-130mm travel bracket make use of a carbon flex-stay design, including the Canyon Lux Trail, Merida Ninety-Six, and Specialized Stumpjumper. As well as being simpler, flex-stay designs are typically lighter too.

canyon lux trail cf 9

In comparison, the Top Fuel sticks with a genuine four-bar platform based around the ABP suspension design. Trek claims the ABP pivot helps to isolate braking forces from the suspension, and indeed it does result in less skipping and skidding when you’re on the brakes on loose, rocky descents.

With all the pivot points rolling on steel ball bearings, the suspension is more active and possesses a more consistent feel to both compression and rebound damping when compared to a flex-stay design. Yes it’s heavier, but the Top Fuel offers notably more active suspension performance, with excellent traction on loose climbs and better reactivity across chattery rock gardens. It’s very impressive for a 120mm travel bike.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

Look out Fuel EX!

The geometry is also brilliant, and the handling really sets it apart from the outgoing Top Fuel.

Cornering performance has improved, with more grip courtesy of the longer front end and those XR4 tyres. These are great all-rounders, with a supple casing and surprisingly decent rolling speed given their size and tread pattern.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

The new Top Fuel is also much more composed on rough and fast descents. Thanks to the longer reach and slacker head angle, the overall wheelbase length has grown by almost 40mm. That’s huge, and it offers a vastly more planted feel at speed. Along with the big tyres and active suspension, this really is a solid little trail bike.

In fact, the geometry updates kind of make the Fuel EX look a little outdated. The two bikes now share the same head angle, and the Top Fuel has a 10mm longer reach and a steeper seat angle. The front end is quite a bit higher on the Fuel EX though, and that does inspire more confidence on really steep descents.

As mentioned earlier though, it’s possible to fit a 130mm fork to the Top Fuel, which would lift the front end and actually make it slacker than the Fuel EX. Indeed there’s now quite a bit of overlap between the two platforms, leaving us to ponder what could be in store for the next generation Fuel EX.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

What does it struggle with?

You’ve likely gathered that the new Trek Top Fuel is more of a muscly trail ripper than a spindly XC featherweight. While it may carry over the name, it’s evolved into quite a different bike compared to its racier ancestors.

The lack of a remote lockout results in a much cleaner cockpit, and we like how it signals the Top Fuel’s commitment to its trail riding intentions. However, it may disappoint those riders and racers who prefer having an instantaneous sprint button at their fingertips.

Indeed with all the updates, and the fact that the new Top Fuel has double the travel of the Supercaliber, there is now an even bigger gap between these two bikes. Riders who are still interested in some part-time XC racing, but aren’t sold on the Supercaliber’s sharp geometry and proprietary IsoStrut suspension design, may be turned off by the Top Fuel’s new attitude.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt bontrager line elite carbon wheel xr4 team issue tyre

Of course you could easily inject some speed with some lighter and faster-rolling tyres, like Bontrager’s XR2. There’s also around half a kilo to be saved in the wheelset, which would make a significant difference to the Top Fuel’s acceleration and climbing enthusiasm.

You could also flip the Mino Link into the High position to steepen the angles. In that guise, with lighter wheels and faster tyres, the Top Fuel would make for a comfortable and confidence-inspiring option for those wanting to sign up for the odd endurance race or multi-day event. If you’re serious about your XC racing though, this is not the bike for you – you’ll be wanting to look at the stupendously efficient Supercaliber for such endeavours.

Component highs & lows

The 2022 Trek Fuel 9.8 XT is a solid package out of the box, especially when you consider it comes in $1,600 cheaper than the 2021 model. And that’s with a pretty much identical build kit. How has a new bike gotten cheaper in the midst of a global pandemic and industry-wide component shortages? Heck knows!

There’s not a lot to be said about the Shimano XT groupset – it works, it’s solid, and it’s easy to tune. The I-Spec mounts offer plenty of adjustability for getting the brake and shift levers into the right spot, and the integrated dropper lever is a nice touch too.

The RockShox suspension isn’t quite as sensitive as the Fox equivalent, particularly the SID Select+ fork, which felt a little stickier than we expected. Otherwise the fork and shock perform well, and the ease of setup is great.

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

The Bontrager dropper post works fine, but the action is sluggish compared to some of its competitors. And while the carbon handlebars offer a nice profile, having spent a lot of time on OneUp handlebars lately, the Bontrager Line Pro feels considerably harsher in comparison.

We’ve had excellent long-term experience with Bontrager’s latest Line Pro & Line Elite carbon wheels , which feature thick carbon beads that are designed to increase impact strength while also reducing the chance of pinch-flats. They’re totally solid and come with an excellent crash-replacement guarantee, while the buzzy 108pt engagement freehub delivers rapid pickup at the pedals. As mentioned earlier though, they are heavy, providing an opportunity to drop significant weight with a wheel upgrade.

Otherwise we’ve been impressed with the frame finish so far. The Mino Link is simple and effective, the Knock Block is totally unnoticeable on the trail, and we’re big fans of the built-in storage from the Burrito Box. Or is it the Kebab Cave? Maybe a Sausage Roll Hole? Sushi Shaft? Cannoli Cavity? Hot Dog Hollow? Spring Roll Room?

Alright, alright! We’ll show ourselves the door…the door that leads into the Spring Roll Room – ha!

2022 trek top fuel 9.8 xt

Flow’s Verdict

Tying together a whole suite of updates to the frame and suspension design, there are no doubts that the new Trek Top Fuel is a more capable bike than its predecessor. It’s still very efficient, but having adopted a more progressive approach to its geometry, it delivers a significant improvement in stability. Along with the active ABP suspension design and chunky tyres, there’s an exceptional amount of grip and support on offer for a 120mm travel bike.

With all those changes, the Top Fuel moves even further away from the Supercaliber. And for some riders, that gap will be a little too wide.

Trek seems happy to have a clear delineation between the two platforms though. This differs from some other brands that utilise a single frame, and simply up-fork and up-shock it to create a slightly longer travel bike (like the Specialized Epic EVO and Orbea Oiz TR). The Top Fuel is not one of those bikes.

Instead of being a long-legged Supercaliber, it’s really a shrunken-down Fuel EX, albeit one with more contemporary geometry. And having ridden both bikes, unless you really need the extra travel of the Fuel EX, this is arguably the better option.

Sure it may have put off the weight-weenies and lockout-lovers, but there’s no denying that the Top Fuel has broadened its appeal to an even wider range of riders, and we reckon it’s more fun as a result.

Think Top Fuel, and the image of a XC race bike instantly springs to mind. But like a faded polaroid tucked into the corner for a dusty picture frame, it’s not an accurate representation of the current design. With the Fuel EX increasing in travel, the Top Fuel has been swept along in its backdraft and seen in high definition, it’s now a capable 29er trail bike with modern sizing and 120mm travel.  Trek offers the new Top Fuel in carbon and alloy options, where the Top Fuel 8 tested here is the high-end alloy build. Regardless of frame material all Top Fuels come with integrated downtube storage. And while the quick release hatch under the bottle cage isn’t big enough to cram a three course lunch into the frame, there’s enough space for a tube, multi-tool, a few snacks and a lightweight jacket.  Frame Trek always offers a comprehensive size range; and with frame options from S to XXL, with a tweener M/L option too, the Top Fuel 8 is no exception. It also has geometry adjustment, but rather than having Trek’s signature Mino Link on the seat stay pivot, the Top Fuel has a flip chip at the lower shock mount. In the low setting this gives a relatively tall 340mm BB height for a 120mm bike, which is probably the only carryover from its race-bike roots – designed to let you keep the cranks spinning, and the speed high at all times. Best down-country mountain-bike: short travel full-suspension The rest of the Top Fuel’s vital stats are on the money though, where a slack 65.6º head angle and steep 77.2º effective seat tube angle make it easy to hammer up the climbs and shred the descents.  It’s built solid too, the complete bike tipping the scales at 14.89kg. It also comes with a combined rider and bike weight limit of 136kg (300lb) so it’s clearly no wet noodle. Yes, it’s not the lightest for a 120mm bike, and not far off what you’d expect for a 150mm bike, but that’s the price you pay for integrated storage, as the alloy down tube needs reinforcing when you cut a hole in it. Thankfully, the Top Fuel 8 rides light, as there’s less travel to pull through to get the bike off the ground, so it offers a different ride experience to modern long-travel trail bikes which tend to have one eye on enduro racing.  Suspension There are no sag gradients on the 130mm travel RockShox Pike fork, which we assume is down to cost saving, but set-up is still really straightforward with a tape measure to hand. And while the Pike has a reputation for having a sporty, firmer tune, the basic RC version on the Trek felt smooth and composed in all situations. Yes, the RC damper has a very wide range of rebound adjustment, but there’s only a small range that’s actually usable, but it is enough to get the rebound just so; and that’s all …Continue reading »

Poppy, playful and efficient. Available in six frame sizes. Internal down tube storage. Mino Link flip chip allows geometry tweaks.

Needs a 180mm rear rotor. Accurate rear shock set up is crucial. A solid build so not the lightest in its class.

Field Test Review: 2022 Trek Top Fuel - Same Name, Different Bike

Table of contents, fuel exe 9.7 review (2023).

Fuel EXe 9.7 review

We’ve made no secret about our admiration for Trek’s Fuel EXe range. The company’s series of lightweight e-MTBs are vying to lead the pack in a new sphere of electric mountain bike riding.

Unlike the first generation of e-MTBs, where manufacturers were just looking to build the most powerful bikes, today’s brands are also now looking to recreate the feel of conventional mountain bikes, with a playful edge and natural handling, while also adding a little extra boost.

The Fuel EXe 9.7 is one of the lower-spec bikes in what is a very accomplished Fuel EXe range. So we’ve taken it to the mountains to see how it fairs compared to the rest of the pack, and how it stands up compared to the rest of the Fuel EXe rides.

Join us as, then, we get stuck into our review of the EXe 9.7…

Our Verdict

A stripped-back version of the top Fuel EXe bikes, but by no means is that a criticism.

The bike rides beautifully, with excellent handling and is adept on both the climbs and descents.

Despite stripping back the quality of the drivetrain, brakes & suspension, Trek hasn’t cut back on the quality of motor, battery and frame – and it’s still fairly lightweight, too.

That means, overall, we’re pretty pleased with the price tag.

  • Battery size

Trek Fuel EXe 9.7

trek top fuel 9.7 2023

Price: $7,599

Weight/frame.

The Fuel EXe 9.7 has a robust OCLV carbon frame, which is the same compound you will find in all the Fuel EXe range. Although lightweight, it’s a sturdy partner out on the trails and it soaks up impacts incredibly well.

If you’re wondering how much the Trek Fuel EXe 9.7 weighs? The answer is that the full bike, with the company’s medium frame, comes in at a respectable 19.05kg . This is a little weightier than some of the higher spec Fuel EXe bikes, but not by too much.

It’s still very easy to manipulate through the corners and demanding trails, with a progressive geometry which lends itself to being thrown around and is easy to control. You can get the frame in four sizes, with eight geometry set-ups in total, which gives the rider a decent opportunity to really hone in their ride to their body.

ℹ️ Take your time over which frame sizes and geometry set-up you go for, getting it wrong could be an expensive mistake to make and you wouldn’t get the best out the bike.

The frame is a real beauty, too, with internally routed cables giving a clean and uncluttered look.

We’ve been immensely impressed with the battery and motor used in the Fuel EXe range. They’re the same throughout the series of bikes, with Trek teaming up with TQ, an admittedly rather unknown quantity in bike circles – the company is usually found in the aviation and robotics sectors.

Don’t let that put you off, though, because the company has created a hugely advanced and very impressive battery. The TQ 360Wh battery is integrated neatly into the bike’s downtube and offers a decent amount of juice to give you a solid assisted ride out on the trails.

ℹ️ We’ve made this clear throughout our Fuel EXe range reviews. If you’re grumbling about the battery size, then you’ve missed the point of these e-MTBs.

These bikes aren’t going to give you assistance all day long, they’re designed to mimic normal MTBs, with a lightweight and natural ride feel.

It’s new territory for e-MTBs and if you’re wanting a chunky battery to power you for hours on end, then this isn’t the bike (or bike type ) for you.

Fuel EXe 9.7 battery

The battery works well with TQ’s motor to release power steadily, conserving it when needed, and you can get a good 40km of assisted boost on one charge. It can also be recharged back up to full capacity in only two hours.

The motor is another real accomplishment by the folk at TQ. The Fuel EXe 9.7 is paired with TQ’s HPR50 motor , which has a solid 50Nm of torque at its disposal. This is more than some other super lightweight e-MTBs on the market.

That’s enough gas to help give you a good boost up some tricky terrain, but you haven’t got it at your disposal for monumental rides.

It a clever piece of kit, though, which delivers its power in an incredibly natural way, kicking into life with your pedal stroke and dying off beautifully when you need it to.

There isn’t any lag here and you never have the fear of overshooting a corner or failing to stop when you need to.

Fuel EXe 9.7 motor

Motor Display

There aren’t many e-MTB motor displays which can boast as much as this utter beauty. TQ and Trek have absolutely smashed it out the park with this display.

It’s a seriously advanced piece of kit, which delivers a bucket full of customisable ride data options. It does the simple stuff, like highlighting the percentage of battery you have left, but you can also flick between lots more information.

You can delve into your RPM data, your elevation stats, an estimation of how many kilometres you still have left on the battery, and more.

It’s a dream to have out on the trail and it really allows you to fine tune your ride performance levels, thanks to prompts which give you tips on when to increase or decrease your assistance.

You can also hook it all up to your smartphone through Trek’s app, to look back at the stats for your day out. There are also three modes you can use with the assistance: Eco, Mid and High.

Fuel EXe 9.7 motor display

The Fuel EXe 9.7 comes with 150mm travel at the front and 140mm at the rear , which is the same amount of travel as seen throughout the Fuel EXe range. The bike is geared up for some solid enduro and XC riding, offering a decent level of comfort through lots of lumps and bumps, while also capable of taking on some steep descents.

The bike comes with Fox Rhythm 36, Float EVOL air spring, Grip damper forks and Fox Performance Float, 2-poisition damper rear shocks . Spec-wise, the suspension setup is a downgrade from the RockShox set-up on the Fuel 9.8 XT, but it’s still a decent companion out on the trails.

It soaks up impacts fairly well, but it comes unstuck with the big drops and hang-time moments. It will satisfy most riders’ needs, though, when it comes to standard days out riding, although you could do with a little less dampening at the rear end – it feels a little bouncy at times when you don’t need it to be.

Wheels/Tyres

Fuel EXe 9.7 wheel

The Fuel EXe 9.7 comes with 29in Bontrager Line Comp 30 tyres, at both the front and the rear . This is a step down from some of the other models in the Fuel EXe range.

The Fuel 9.8 XT comes with the Carbon Bontrager Line Elite 30s, rather than the alloy comp tyres, and this adds a little extra weight to the bike overall.

They still offer a decent footing on the trail, though, and there isn’t much difference you can notice while out riding.

It’s a small change, but not life changing, and the same applies when it comes to the tyres – the Fuel EXe 9.7 comes with the Bontrager XR5 Team Issue tyres, rather than the SE5 Team Issue.

We weren’t happy with the SE5 Team Issue tyres on the other Fuel EXe bikes, so we don’t see this change as a bad thing, necessarily. They offer a teethy grip and a lot of traction out on the trails.

The Fuel EXe 9.7 is fitted with Shimano 4-piston hydraulic brakes . These are fairly basic compared to the higher-spec brakes on the more expensive Fuel EXe bikes.

They offer a fairly competent level of stopping power, but the heat management isn’t ideal. We never came particularly unstuck as a result of the brakes, but a heavier rider might find it more of a battle to come to a stop while moving at pace, particularly downhill.

The brakes are no thrills, but no disaster either.

Fuel EXe 9.7 brakes

The Fuel EXe 9.7 comes with a Shimano drivetrain, with the company’s SLX M7100, 12-speed cassette and Shimano XT M8100 rear derailleur .

It’s a big step down from the highest-spec Fuel EXe ride, but it does the job fairly well. It offers responsive shifting, although it does carry a little extra weight.

This is a fair price for a decent amount of high-tech kit.

Despite being one of the lower spec bikes in the Fuel EXe range, Trek hasn’t stripped the bike of the incredible TQ motor and battery, which we think is a huge selling point (quite possibly the biggest selling point).

The same applies to the frame – Trek has retained that brilliant OCLV carbon frame on the EXe 9.7. They’ve added a bit of extra weight by removing the carbon tyres and changing the drivetrain and brakes, but overall, it still rides nicely.

We might argue that the Trek 9.7 could be a little cheaper, but then we think of those excellent TQ components, and that has us thinking that it’s probably a fair price, overall.

Fuel EXe 9.8 XT Facts & Figures

Size configurations.

How Does it Compare?

The Fuel EXe 9.7 certainly comes in at an attractive price point for a very well-designed e-MTB.

Let’s have a look at what else is out there, though, to see how it compares.

Turbo Levo SL Comp

Specialized is a big hitter in this super lightweight category of e-mountain bikes.

The company’s Turbo Levo SL Comp comes in at $6,370, with a fully-carbon frame and 150mm of travel at both the front and the rear. It weighs in at 19.4kg, just a little more than the Trek, and it has a slightly smaller battery at 320Wh.

The motor is also less powerful, only kicking out 35Nm of torque. The Turbo Levo SL Comp handles like a dream, though, and it really does nail the natural ride feel. It’s one of the most playful e-MTBs we’ve ever ridden due to its progressive geometry.

However, you’ve got less juice in the tank and it’s weightier than our Fuel EXe 9.7.

We’re going to stick with the Trek.

Cube Stereo Hybrid 140 HPC TM 750

There aren’t many others in this super lightweight sector, but we’ll look at a chunkier battery bike so as to show you how they differ.

The Cube Stereo Hybrid 140 HPC TM 750 is another good e-MTB around the same price – $7,000.

It isn’t in the same league handling-wise, though, it’s more of a conventional e-MTB, with a 750Wh battery and uber-powerful Bosch motor, which kicks out 85Nm.

It will boost you up the hills all day long and offers a robust ride feel, capable of taking some big hits. But you compensate on weight because of that, with the bike coming in at 24.6kg.

If you want a beastly powerhouse of a bike, the Cube is your go to here, but we’re looking for a super playful, lightweight e-MTB and the EXe 9.7 wipes the floor, here.

Final Thoughts

It isn’t the highest-spec bike in Trek’s Fuel EXe range by any stretch of the imagination, but does it still tick a lot of boxes? Yes, it certainly does.

It’s light and manoeuvrable, while still offering a top-end TQ battery and motor.

Although it’s a stripped-back version of the top Fuel EXe bikes, you don’t end up adding on lots of weight and Trek’s initial aims – to create a fun and lightweight e-MTB – have still been met more than well enough.

At $7,599, you’re getting a very good e-MTB and we consider it decent value for money. Another round of applause from us here at EMBK to another of Trek’s e-bikes.

Now, go and find out for yourselves!
