The Santa Monica Pier, with its amusement park, beach, and proximity to the city, is one of the most iconic attractions for visitors to Los Angeles and Southern California.

It hasn’t gained its reputation as a national historic landmark without reason! 

With a whole week’s worth of attractions packed onto one beautiful pier, there’s something for everyone. 

For a first-timer, however, the plentiful activities and bustling crowds may feel a tad fast-paced if you’re going in blind!

Amidst the rides and games, street performers, vendors selling art and Santa Monica Pier souvenirs, and cars driving right out over the ocean, there is movement in all directions at all times on the pier. 

If you’re anything like me, this amount of action can be equally exciting and overwhelming at times. To help with this, I like to show up with an idea of what to expect and where to invest my time and energy. 

From my several experiences visiting the pier both alone and with friends and family, I’ve compiled a Santa Monica Pier guide.

Santa Monia Pier Overview

• Location: The Santa Monica Pier is located in Santa Monica, a coastal city just a 30-minute drive west of central Los Angeles. The pier juts out over the Pacific Ocean from the bottom of Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica beside Santa Monica Beach.
• Origins: The Santa Monica Pier was first opened in 1909 and has served as a popular fishing and entertainment destination in the Los Angeles region for well over a century!
• Santa Monica Pier Hours: The Santa Monica Pier is open year round daily from 6am-10pm.
• Cost: Santa Monica Pier admission is free! Games and rides each have their own cost, though. Depending on what you do, your day can range from free of charge to a couple hundred dollars.
• Recommended time to spend: It’s possible just to stroll up and down the pier in under an hour. But if you’re planning to get involved in the action, you’ll want at least two hours. You could easily spend a day around the pier, but three to four hous is reasonable.

Things To Do at the Santa Monica Pier

Pacific Park Amusement Park

Pacific Park is the largest and grandest of the Santa Monica Pier attractions. The amusement park is located right on the pier over the Pacific Ocean. 

Its iconic ferris wheel is visible clearly on Santa Monica State Beach as well as for miles down the west coast! 

Pacific Park first opened in 1996 and occupies two acres of rides, games, eats, and treats for the whole family while also remaining in reach of the Pacific Ocean breeze. 

The park is open year-round from 11am-9pm daily (10pm on the weekends) and is free to enter, so folks can come and go as they please.

Santa Monica Pier rides, and games are priced individually and range from $5-$12. If you’re a big ride buff, there’s the option to purchase an Unlimited Ride Wristband for $40 ($20 for kids under 7).

Ride the Historic Carousel 

The historic Santa Monica Pier Carousel is located in the Loof Hippodrome building at the far end of the Santa Monica Pier. 

While going for a spin on the carousel, remember to take a look at the building itself. Constructed in 1916, it’s the oldest building on the pier and a national historic landmark!

The carousel was originally constructed in 1922 and remains available to ride Monday-Thursday from 10am-5pm, and Friday-Sunday from 11am-7pm. It costs $3 for all riders. It’s also wheelchair accessible!

Visit The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium: Heal The Bay Aquarium

The Heal The Bay Aquarium is located on the lower level of the Santa Monica Pier. It’s open year-round Wednesday-Sunday from 12pm-4pm (adults for $10, kids 12 and under are free). 

Inside the aquarium, you’ll find a diverse array of animal and plant life from the Santa Monica Bay, including a kelp forest, a shark nursery, eels, lobsters, jellyfish, and much more!

Check Out The Playland Arcade

The Playland Arcade dates back to the 1950s! It offers all the best of 20th-century arcade nostalgia, including air hockey, Skeeball, pinball, foosball, and lots more!

This iconic Santa Monica Pier arcade is located right beside Pacific Park. It’s open daily from 10am-10pm and is one of the must-do activities on the pier.

Witness the students training at the Trapeze School!     

Perhaps one of the most unique attractions of the Santa Monica Pier is the Trapeze School .

Adjacent to the Playland Arcade, go watch as trapeze and aerial arts students fly through the air right before your eyes! It’s a free circus show!

Visit the Iconic Route 66 Sign & Last Stop Shop

The original Route 66 sign at the end of the Santa Monica Pier marks the end of the historic American highway.

There, you can visit the Last Stop Shop for one-of-a-kind “Route 66” merch to commemorate the iconic American east-to-west route.

Santa Monica Pier Events

In addition to all of the year round attractions on the Santa Monica Pier, there are special events throughout the year on the pier! Here are some festivities that the Santa Monica Pier hosts:

• In June, catch the Santa Monica Pier 360 Beach Festival for free, all ages family fun, or check out the PRIDE festival and PRIDE events happening all month!
• Later in the summer, the pier is a perfect place to spend the 4th of July or Wednesday evenings for the Twilight Summer music series , with concerts running until late August-September.
• During non-summer months, meet Santa Monicans at Third Thursday’s Locals Night: Once a month, join the car show, music, youth activities, and more!
• Wellness & Waves : A weekly community event focused on health and wellness activities.

What to Eat at the Santa Monica Pier

Amidst all the action, there are plenty of choices for food right on the pier, as well as around the Santa Monica area. 

Below is a list of dining options ranging from grab-and-go to fine dining, both in and around the Santa Monica Pier.

On the Pier:

• Soda Jerks: Inside the historic carousel building, Soda Jerks appeals to nostalgia with classic 1940s American ice cream and soda shop vibes.
• PierBurger : A classic all-American burger joint with window service as well as indoor and outdoor dining. 
• Bubba Gump Shrimp : Arguably the most famous of the Santa Monica Pier restaurants, Bubba Gump Shrimp is part of the iconic American seafood chain made famous by the film Forest Gump.
• Seaside on the Pier : Fresh seafood and classic American food in a casual setting. 

Off the Pier:

• Cassia: An award-winning, upscale South Asian cuisine spot recognized as one of LA’s top restaurants. One of the more pricey dining options. 
• Birdie G’s: American cuisine with Eastern European influence served in a trendy, industrial setting in Bergamot Station.
• Crudo e Nudo : Local, fresh seafood with modern Italian twists, in a cozy setting.

History & Fun Facts About the Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier was built in 1909 and became the West Coast’s first concrete pier, reaching 1600 feet into the ocean! 

Interestingly, the Santa Monica Pier was originally designed to help with the city’s sewage disposal into the ocean.

The original purpose was abandoned quickly (thank goodness!), and the pier instantly became a favorite destination for fishing and other forms of leisure. 

 In 1916, entrepreneur Charles Looff constructed the Looff Pleasure Pier on the municipal pier. His first project was the carousel, which still operates today! 

Looff’s vision then expanded to include a roller coaster, bowling and billiards, and a games room. 

The pier has a long history of resilience between the Great Depression and a devastating storm in 1983, which destroyed a third of the pier.

In 1996 the Pacific Park opened, returning the pier to its former amusement status with a rollercoaster and many more rides and games!

• The white and blue arch of the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor is a historical icon dating back to the 1940s internationally renowned boat dock. The first person to buy space for his boat was Charlie Chaplin, making this a popular location for tourists to see stars.
• The Pier collapsed during the Great Depression, causing one LA local to open a casino on his boat off the shore. For some time, the pier was a seedier, not-so-family-friendly place.
• The pier has been featured in several Hollywood films, including Forest Gump, The Sting, Hancock, Her, 2012, Iron Man, Rocky 3 , and many more!
• The Pacific Wheel is the world’s first solar-powered ferris wheel!

Santa Monica Pier Directions, Parking & How to Get There

If you’re driving

If you’re heading to Santa Monica by car, the area is located right on the Pacific Coast Highway, making it a popular stop for California road-trippers heading south down the coast.

Parking is made easier thanks to this real-time parking map . Here are a few of my preferred locations:

• Parking lot on the Pier | 300 Santa Monica Pier
• Lot 1 North | 1550 Appian Way
• Hot Dog on a Stick | 1633 Ocean Front Walk

Other options

There’s also an accessible city transit system in LA that offers relatively direct access to Santa Monica daily. 

If you’re coming from Los Angeles by foot, Bus 8 Downtown Santa Monica / UCLA will bring you right to the pier at Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue. 

Another fun option is to use LA’s bike share service , which is a bike rental platform that reaches all over Los Angeles by bicycle.

This is definitely my preferred way to get around the coastal beach areas in order to avoid looking for parking!

Best Time to Visit the Santa Monica Pier

While the Santa Monica Pier is bustling year-round, it is definitely most lively through the summer months, May-September.

This is when many of the events happen, the Trapeze school is open, and all the street performers are out to share their tricks. 

That said, it can get quite hot between July and August. Make sure you prepare the family for the summer heat or spend part of the day on Santa Monica State Beach!

I would also recommend an earlier start if you’re hoping to find convenient parking and beat some of the lines. 

Try to get there around 10:30-11am and stay into the early afternoon, and then perhaps stroll down off the pier onto Ocean Avenue and find yourself a nice spot for food in the area.

Tips for Visiting the Santa Monica Pier

• If you’re visiting on a budget, I’d recommend eating breakfast beforehand or hitting one of the fruit stands or coffee kiosks down the beach on the boardwalk before the pier. This will save you a couple of bucks on food before you get started!
• Save the solar-powered ferris wheel for sunset and take in the stunning views of the horizon! Santa Monica Pier at night is absolutely beautiful.
• After a day spent on the pier, take a bike ride south along the bike paths beside the beach and parks at sunset, and find yourself in Venice Beach for the evening!
• Santa Monica hotels can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you choose to go a little bit more inland–just remember to book in advance.

What is so special about the Santa Monica Pier? Is it Worth Visiting?

So, is it worth all the hype? 

Absolutely. Taking a walk along the pier, hanging out at the nearby Santa Monica State Beach, eating from all the food stalls, and admiring the beautiful sunset–there’s not much better.

It’s definitely a really fun way to spend a Los Angeles summer day with the family and experience so many iconic establishments. It’s a must-see for a Los Angeles visitor and an iconic Southern California staple!

Now that you’ve decided to visit Santa Monica Pier, you’ll need to figure out some logistics, such as when to go and how crowded it might be once you get there. Plan ahead or check before you go to make the most of your visit:

• Plan your visit ahead of time. Mid-week visits or mornings will be less crowded.
• Visit SantaMonicaPier.org for the latest information as hours and entrance locations may shift.
• Want to see if the Pier is busy? Go to the live Pier cam to check it out before your visit.
• Pack some sunscreen and remember to reapply.
• Go car free – use the Big Blue Bus, Metro E Line, bikes or shared ride vehicles – then you don’t have to worry about parking!

Remember, if you purchase items from a cart vendor, be sure they have an official vending permit issued by the City of Santa Monica as well as a LA County Public Health Permit for food items. The City Council recently adopted  three new rules  to help improve safety and cleanliness on and around the Santa Monica Pier. The new rules prohibit the use of combustible fuels on the 112-year old wooden pier, including propane, butane, and other fuels commonly used for cooking; they prohibit dumping of cooking waste like fat or grease on or below the pier; and they prohibit the dumping of other commercial waste in nearby trash cans.

The new rules were needed due to the rapid increase in unlicensed vending on the pier, which created multiple health and safety hazards, including a risk of fire, water pollution, and garbage attracting vermin.

While You’re at the Santa Monica Pier

Once you arrive at the Pier, the options are endless. From Pacific Park, shopping, sightseeing, and more, how will you spend your time?

• Your smartphone is a great tool, but Santa Monica is also full of friendly people including our police and city staff who are usually happy to help out with directions or even make a recommendation for dinner.
• Keep Santa Monica clean! Do your part to always discard trash and recycling in the appropriate bins. Remember used masks and gloves belong in the trash.
• Support local businesses. There are a variety of businesses on the Pier and they need your support to recover from this past year!

The beach to the left of the pier is a perfect spot if you’re looking to have the amusement park as your backdrop, although you can’t go wrong with snaps on the actual pier that showcase the stunning California coast.

The Pacific Amusement Park allows the little ones to ride on the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel as adults take a trapeze class. There’s also an onsite aquarium, arcade games, and multiple food stalls on the Santa Monica Pier worth stopping at .

Visit the Pier in the evening to savor scenic views of the Santa Monica sunset over the Pacific waters. The atmosphere is also perfect for a lazy stroll to unwind after a busy day.

3 Shop Through The Third Street Promenade

Visitors yearning for retail therapy will be glad to know that Santa Monica offers a spectacular shopping experience, and The Third Street Promenade is the ideal spot for shopaholics. 15 How To Spend The Perfect Day In Santa Monica

Start at the Santa Monica State Beach with a refreshing swim while getting baked by the toasty Santa Monica sun. Head to the Santa Monica Pier, where fun activities await. Can you think of anything that is more Southern California than visiting the Santa Monica Pier? I don’t think we could name a single thing. Well, maybe a day in San Diego on the Beach surfing… But no, the Pier. Even though a day at the Santa Monica Pier seems like the most touristy and convoluted Los Angeles travel plan you can ever think of it’s actually well worth your time and a visit to LA isn’t complete without some beach time.

Yes, there are so many wonderful free things to do in the Los Angeles area and if you’re going to venture to the beach for the purpose of swimming and pretending to be from SoCal you might pick a different beach, like Manhattan Beach, but the Santa Monica Pier end beach are an ideal, easy to access destination and are just downright iconic.

Locale of the Santa Monica Pier

When you ponder life in the West and the history of North America there are few things that pop out:   the California Gold Rush, old west towns and cowboys,  and then Route 66 and all of the struggles and stories in vintage history that are a part of it. The Santa Monica Pier is the very end of Route 66 (check out the Planet D for their Route 66 trip ). As you walk out onto the pier you see the sign that calls it out.

Basically when you’re in Los Angeles you just need to head west on any of the large boulevards and they will get you there.

Parking near the Santa Monica Pier

Once you hit Ocean Boulevard or know that you’re within a block of it you need to find your parking right away. Sure, there is limited parking at the Santa Monica Pier itself, but depending on the weather and the day of the week you might be really hard pressed.

The best places to park for a day at this awesome Southern California attraction are either in one of the five parking lots just off the beach. If you aren’t lugging a bunch of stuff make a right onto ocean and head north a bit and park at the bluff. You can have a nice walk and usually awesome success with parking.

Tip : the best parking is found south of the Santa Monica Pier. The obvious choice is north, but better luck is south.

If you cannot score a spot in one of the beachfront parking lots, head a block over to Ocean Blvd. Here you’ll find both paid parking lots (attended and not) as well as, dare I say it, STREET PARKING! After 6pm street parking is actually awesome and pretty easy (except on Fridays).

History of the Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier was built in 1909 and initially was two separate structures.  Over the years the pier built by the city of Santa Monica and the secondary pier, also known as the Pleasure Pier, we’re joined to create the iconic Pier that we enjoy today.   Initially the Santa Monica Pier had an old wooden roller coaster but that has since been dismantled and a newer metal roller coaster is in its place. There used to be a different ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier as well, but that’s since been replaced by the current one which has been around for 20 years.

Over the years countless movies, television shows, and music videos haven’t been shot at the Santa Monica Pier so even if you’ve never been there before it feels like you’ve been a thousand times. And it’s funny, but not much of the pier that you walk on today is the original 1909 pier. Year after year with storms and construction projects and life in general, pieces of the pier have either been completely removed and replaced or improved so the initial vintage Pier from the last century is kind of just a ghost. It’s all so cool though and when you’re there you don’t even think about the fact that it’s been mostly replaced.

Photo Tip 1 :   One of the best places to get an actual picture of the Santa Monica Pier including Pacific Park is from the very end of the pier at the top the harbor operations building. Walk up the steps and snap your pictures in the afternoon and evening light.

Photo Tip 2 :   If you want pictures of the entire pier in the morning, do it from the beach on the south side of the pier. That way you’ll get the good light, the surf, the amusement park, end in general it’s just beautiful.

Activities at the Santa Monica Pier

Visiting the Santa Monica Pier can be a half day or whole day activity. It depends on your mood and how much you enjoy people-watching. We would definitely recommend at least two hours for the Pier and surrounding area.  On a beautiful day, maybe even longer and plan to have some lunch there.

Pacific Park on the Pier

Santa Monica Pier is so memorable both for its proximity to Los Angeles as well as the amusement park found out over the water.   Pacific Park is adorable. There aren’t any thrill rides but just nice carnival-style rides.  If the carnival rides didn’t make me sick we could probably spend all day out there but that’s not the case.

Tip :   If you are a frequent visitor to Santa Monica or Los Angeles you can actually get an annual pass to Pacific Park. You can also buy tickets in advance on their website if you like which will save some time on a busy day.  

Yo u don’t have to have tickets to just stroll through the amusement area. Some of the best people watching in the Los Angeles area happens in the Pacific Park portion of the pier.

Rides at Pacific Park

If there are any must-do rides at the Santa Monica Pier’s Pacific Park they would for sure be the ferris wheel and the roller coaster. The smaller rides are fun (I guess) but the ferris wheel and roller coaster give you an awesome view of the ocean and city.  On this last trip we only did the ferris wheel because the roller coaster had quite the line, and I’m so glad we did. From loading and then pausing halfway around to fill the rest of the gondolas to the continual rotation, you get a great bang for your buck with your ferris wheel ticket. We were in the air at least 10 minutes, maybe more. And we totally lucked out on the weather.

Santa Monica Beach

I love Santa Monica Beach! Even when we lived in Orange County I would find reasons that I had to go to LA so that I could go to the Santa Monica beach. When we randomly visit Los Angeles this is our beach of choice. True, Manhattan Beach is very nice, as is Hermosa Beach, and then Venice Beach has so much to do and see, but the Santa Monica beach is your perfect Southern California experience. The water is warm, they maintain this beach very well and the Los Angelinos who use the beach have a sense of pride, so the beach stays fairly clean.

Note :   it’s always a good idea to check out events that are happening before you go someplace as popular as the Santa Monica Pier or Beach. Several times we’ve shown up and encountered either a public event or a tournament of some sort, each of which closed off a good portion of the beach and take up tons of parking.

And here’s a fun tidbit of info:  Santa Monica Beach is the original Muscle Beach, not Venice Beach.  There’s even an historical marker at the beach calling that out.  #TheMoreYouKnow.

Our best beach tips

And always remember to bring your sunscreen whenever you’re at the beach even if you are naturally tan. That’s one can sneak up on you. If you’re going to the beach with little ones they are especially susceptible to burn quickly and without notice as they have so much fun in the sand.  Check out our full article on the best ideas for simple sun protection !

Tip :   If you have an OCD issue with sand something to keep your kids granule free is to sprinkle their legs and booties with baby powder before they hit the sand. That will help to keep the sand at the beach and your car clean. Sunscreen is still more important though.

And we don’t recommend a ton of products on our blog, but two of our favorite beach gear items to bring both to our local beach and when we travel are our beach pop-up tent and our easy, compact beach lounge chair/mats . Both of these things are super simple to bring and really make a beach day more fun and easy.

Walking the Santa Monica Bluff

Our very first time as a family coming to the Santa Monica Pier was a crazy day. We actually didn’t even venture out onto the pier, but that was all right with us. We discovered that if you head north walking along Ocean Boulevard there’s actually a wonderful walkway full of people jogging and just going for a stroll. This path runs through Palisades Park above the bluff and gives you a continual view of the Pacific Ocean and the iconic Santa Monica Pier.

The Veterans Memorial is a part of the park, so in addition to the view and shade, cannons and exhibits make it an interesting spot. A rose garden, trails down to the beach, and even a totem pole make Palisades Park a unique Los Angeles area park. There are plenty of benches and places to sit and it’s actually ideal when you’ve got little kids with you.

Note : the Camera Obscura is a vintage art studio space and exhibition center in Palisades Park. It’s open to the public for special events.

Of course bigger or slightly older little kids are going to see the Pier and want to go and do the rides, but when you’ve got a toddler having wonderful open space to run is perfect.

Tip :  end your visit to Los Angeles with a visit to the Santa Monica Pier. It’s a great way for kids to burn off energy before it they have to either start a road trip to some place or fly away. And if you are flying out it’s really easy to get from the Santa Monica Pier to LAX, so you might as well go for a nice walk.

More fun ON the Pier

So of course there is the amusement park, the beach, the amazing walk you can take, but there are a few other things to do directly at the Santa Monica Pier. Because, like I said, I get sick on carnival rides I skipped out on the carousel but there is a vintage carousel from the 1920s at the start of the pier. This is right next to the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium . We have a small local aquarium at home so we didn’t stop in here, but it is an aquarium with a purpose (so should be supported) and is run by Heal the Bay.

In addition to the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and obvious attractions, you’ll also find a trapeze school out on the pier. We watched the lady conquer her fear and go off the top platform on the trapeze. We saw another learn how to climb, spin and fall on long fabric strands. It was actually pretty cool.  And if you don’t want to fly through the air you can always go into the huge arcade and play video games… but y ou’re in California to go outside! 

Street performers are also very common on the Santa Monica Pier. Should you stop to listen to them or want to film them or take photos, be courteous and tip the performers. They add to the atmosphere and overall Los Angeles vibe of a Santa Monica afternoon. And fishermen too! So many fishermen!

Tip :  be cautious of fishermen casting their hooks… you don’t want to be caught!

Dining on the Santa Monica Pier

The pier is perfect for going and having lunch or dinner or even just drinks. There is a restaurant at the very very end of the pier, Maria Sol , but we opted for one at the start, right by the carousel. Seaside on the Pier , which replaced Ristorante Al Mare, has a nice rooftop bar with a great view of the beach and the rest of the Pier.  The service wasn’t awesome, but my jalapeno margarita was delicious and wasn’t price-gouged.

Most of the other dining options on the Pier itself are very casual, including burgers, pretzels and even a Bubba Gump Shrimp location. We recommend either Maria Sol or Seaside on the Pier for the nicer, more relaxing dining on the Santa Monica Pier. The full Santa Monica boardwalk area is a three mile long stretch, so feel free to venture along the Blvd if you would like more options.

Where to stay in Santa Monica

Los Angeles is a large area. There are loads of places all over the city. You could get a swanky hotel or a cool AirBNB or something, but if you do choose to stay in Santa Monica you will be limited to some very upscale places. I’m sure there are some seedy places you could stay if you really want to do but most of the hotels at the beach are really gorgeous.

Loews Hotel Santa Monica is kind of amazing with sweeping views of the beach and the pier as well as fireplace lounge for when it actually does get cold in Santa Monica (it happens), as well as a really beautiful pool area that overlooks the beach in the Santa Monica Pier. Totally didn’t stay here, but hung out in the afternoon and would stay in a heartbeat.

Why can’t I find an AirBNB in Santa Monica?

If doing the air AirBNB thing is your preferred accommodations when you’re traveling then Santa Monica used to not be the right spot for you, and still may not be due to city laws. It is not legal within Santa Monica city limits to operate a vacation rental WITHOUT a host on property for LESS THAN 30 DAYS . If you find one that advertises the whole home/apartment and allows bookings for less than 30 days, you or the host could get in trouble (fined) by the city. There are some gorgeous Santa Monica AirBNBs available, but you must proceed with caution.

Santa Monica is a different city than Los Angeles even though it does seem like one big continuous scroll of blocks. Maybe the accommodations laws will change someday but currently you can only stay places that are actually zoned as commercial lodging.

How can you not visit the Santa Monica Pier when you’re in Los Angeles? It’s so easy and worth every moment the traffic you have to sit through. The best time for pictures is for sure in the late afternoon, unless you really want to be there in the morning, then just do whatever. Have fun, do the rides, eat food that’s really bad for you, it is the perfect Southern California adventure !

looks fantastic. I really need to spend more time in LA next time I'm there. Have done Venice Beach but that's all as far as the beaches go. I would really like to spend some time walking around the Bluff though. Fabulous to think this is all so close to LA.

What fun! I've been to Santa Monica pier only one time, and that was for my mother-in-law's birthday. Really fun, nostaligic, hot, pretty, and very American I would say. I loved it.

Heal the Bay Aquarium , located at the foot of the Santa Monica Pier, is a a great place to learn more about Pacific sealife, since the facility is run as a marine education center by the non-profit Heal the Bay. While it's nowhere near as large as the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Heal the Bay Aquarium still showcases more than 100 sea animals and plants found in Santa Monica Bay, featuring lots of sea creatures you can touch.

Go for a Stroll Along the Third Street Promenade

One free activity that draws fitness buffs looking for a good workout is climbing the Santa Monica Stairs. There are two sets of very steep stairs stretching from Adelaide Drive at the top to Entrada Drive at the bottom. If you search on Google Maps for the Santa Monica Stairs, you'll be directed to 699 Adelaide, the address of house across from the top of the stairway pictured here. You'll find free street parking at the top and bottom, but since most people go to Adelaide Drive, it's sometimes easier to find parking on Entrada Drive and start at the bottom. 

Walk, Bike or Skate Your Way Along "The Strand"

The Marvin Braude Bike Trail, better known as "The Strand," is a 22-mile paved trail that runs from Will Rogers State Beach just north of Santa Monica to Torrance Beach in the south. There are plenty of places to rent bikes or skates so you can spend an hour or all day biking or skating along several miles of paved beach path that stretch as far south as Redondo Beach or north to Malibu. You'll find at least three  bike and skate rental shops offering varying types of equipment right on or near the Santa Monica Pier.

Try Your Hand at Surfing

Surfing is allowed between lifeguard towers 18 and 20, located at Pico Boulevard and Bay Street, and between 28 and 29, located at Ashland Avenue and Pier Street. A number of surf schools and private instructors are available to help would-be surfers at any state—whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced surfer—as is rental equipment. As a rule, always check in with the lifeguards before you start surfing.

Embrace Your Inner Aviation Geek at the Museum of Flying

Founded in 1974 by Donald Douglas, Jr., the second president of the Douglas Aircraft Company, the Museum of Flying opened in its current location in 2012 on the grounds of the Santa Monica Airport. The museum features several exhibits related to the Douglas Aircraft Company, as well as other historic planes, replicas, and models, including the Douglas DC-3 Spirit of Santa Monica you'll see out front, built at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica in 1942. Also worth checking out: a FedEx airplane cockpit that you can climb into for photo-ops.

Go Swimming at the Annenberg Community Beach House

The Annenberg Community Beach House is a public swimming pool, community center, and gallery located right on the beach at the northern end of Santa Monica State Beach. The property, which initially featured a 100-room mansion William Randolph Hearst had built for Marion Davies in the 1920s, has gone through various incarnations as a hotel and beach club over the years. The villa itself was torn down in 1956, while the beach club continued operating until the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, after which the city drew up new plans but lacked funding to implement them. Thankfully, Wallis Annenberg of the Annenberg Foundation came to the rescue and provided grant funding for the project.

In 2009, the Annenberg Community Beach House opened with the historic pool and the Marion Davies Guesthouse restored to their former glory, and brand new event spaces and recreation offerings, like beach volleyball, tennis, and soccer courts. Some can be reserved for a fee; others are free on a first-come-first-served basis.

See a Show at the The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage

The 500-seat Broad Stage  (pronounced "brode") at Santa Monica College's Performing Arts Center is the largest and the most technologically advanced performing arts space currently operating in the area. There are two theaters, the main Broad Stage and the more intimate 100-seat black-box theater, The Edye. Performances here range from classical to cutting-edge, across theater, dance, and music, and have featured legendary artists like Patti LuPone, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Helen Hunt, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, among others.

Visit the California Heritage Museum

You’ve seen the pier and the beach in pictures, Third Street Promenade and beachfront properties, and you’ve decided to go to Santa Monica, California. You’re ready to soak up the sun, dive into the water, and have some fun, even if you only have one day in Santa Monica .

But how can you make the most of just a short time in this lovely coastal city? Don’t fret; our one- day Santa Monica itinerary will tell you all the best places to eat, shop, and have fun.

Santa Monica is in Los Angeles County, less than 20 minutes away from downtown LA (if there’s not too much traffic). This coastal Southern Californian city is known for its great weather and beaches, along with its lively nightlife and unparalleled shopping.

When to Visit Santa Monica

How to get there, where to stay in santa monica, is one day enough time in santa monica, a final note on planning a trip to santa monica.

Santa Monica is most popular in the summer, but if you can, you may want to consider going in spring or fall. Santa Monica’s beaches can get crowded in the summer, and I mean crowded.

If you get to the beach at the wrong time, you’ll have trouble finding a spot to spread out your beach towel, and when you do, you’ll be right next to the people around you.

Since it’s in sunny California, the weather is still nice in spring and fall. Average highs in September and October are still in the 70s F (21-26 °C).

The weather on the beach can even be pleasant in the winter, though I wouldn’t go in the water or stay too late into the evening, because it can get cold. You can still lay out on a sunny day though.

As mentioned, Santa Monica is right next to LA , making it easily accessible through many different means of transportation.

It’s only 8 miles from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). You can drive there taking the 10 (as the locals call I-10) west from LA; the 10 connects to lots of other freeways, so you’ll likely be connecting to it from most directions.

Depending on where you stay, Santa Monica is walkable, so you don’t necessarily need a car. You can also take the Big Blue Bus or the Metro Expo Line. If you are looking to rent a car, check out car rental comparison prices here.

Santa Monica has tons of options, and there are also lots of options technically outside of Santa Monica as well that are still close by. Some good options in Santa Monica include Shutters on the Beach and Palihouse Santa Monica .

Shutters on the Beach is a 5-star hotel with an outdoor pool, hot tub, spa, and a location right by the beach. If you’re looking for luxury, this is a great option.

If you need a more mid-range option, Palihouse Santa Monica is a 3-star hotel just a few blocks from the beach.

The Hampton Inn & Suites Santa Monica is a great budget-friendly hotel that’s also just a few blocks from the beach.

Yes, one day is more than enough time in Santa Monica. If you only have a few hours, then it might be too short so a full day in the area is the perfect span of time to stroll along the pier, relax on the beaches, and do a little bit of shopping!

One Day in Santa Monica suggested itinerary

With only one day in Santa Monica, you’ll want to plan carefully so you can see and do everything—and have plenty of time to relax on the sand. Here’s what I recommend:

Start out your morning with a nice cup of coffee from Espresso Cielo, a little shop in downtown Santa Monica with delicious coffee and tea and locally made breakfast pastries and sandwiches.

After your coffee and breakfast, it’s time to get moving. You can talk a walk through Tongva Park, a 6.2-acre park named after the Tongva people who are an Indigenous people of California.

The park features beautiful plants native to the area; as you walk through it, you’ll wonder if you’re really in a city. Tongva Park has an amphitheater, playground, garden, fountains, picnic areas, and scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Pier.

You can also walk along Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica’s main street. However, you won’t see any cars on this street. It’s been converted into a pedestrian-only area.

The promenade has tons of stores, restaurants, and entertainment. You can find well-known favorites like Sephora, Lululemon, Patagonia, and H&M, along with local boutiques and shops.

If you haven’t had your fill of shopping, you can also visit Santa Monica Place, which is at the end of Third Street Promenade. This shopping mall has tons of stores, and since it’s an outdoor shopping mall, you can still get that sunshine as you go between stores.

If you’re not into shopping, you can get your exercise in a different way with a morning bike ride. There are lots of places to bike in Santa Monica, including the bike path along the beach.

There are a few different places to rent bikes. Check out Santa Monica Beach Bicycle Rentals, Santa Monica Public Bike Rental, or Joyride – Bike Rentals & Tours.

As with everything else, there are tons of places to choose from when deciding where to eat. Whatever you’re craving, chances are Santa Monica has it. Here are some suggestions.

Lady & Larder may not look like a place to eat lunch; however, when you walk into this women- owned shop, you’ll find a secret lunch menu open from 12pm–3pm, walk-in only. Though the menu changes daily, they usually serve hot sandwiches and grab-and-go baguette sandwiches.

If you spent too much time at the mall, you may want something quick, and Sunny Blue is the perfect place for that. At this Japanese restaurant, you’ll find quick food for under $5. The shop serves Omusubi (also called Onigri), which are Japanese rice balls with different fillings inside, wrapped with or without nori (seaweed).

Or you can try Cha Cha Chicken: Caribbean Cuisine with Latin Fusion. This restaurant is known for its delicious jerk chicken. Enjoy your taste of the Caribbean on their spacious patio.

After lunch, it’s time to hit the beach— after all, you can’t go to SoCal without going to the beach! Santa Monica Beach is close by, and it stretches for 3.5 miles with Venice Beach to the southeast and Will Rogers Beach to the northwest.

If you’d like to see the eccentric boardwalk at Venice Beach , then you can go over there, but Santa Monica Beach is closer. However, Venice Beach does have an infamous free spirit. If you’ve never been to Venice, it’s worth checking out. Plus, if you’re into skateboarding, it’s home to the Venice Beach Skate Park.

Pick a spot to spread your towel, put up an umbrella, and enjoy the nice weather. Pro tip: the water is a bit better farther away from the pier if you’re on Santa Monica Beach.

There are lots of activities to do, both in and out of the water—swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, body surfing, playing beach volleyball, building a sandcastle, etc. If you need to rent gear, lots of places along the beach rent surfboards, boogie boards, and anything else you might need.

When you’re done at the beach, head over to the well-known Santa Monica Pier. Unlike most piers, there are lots of things to do here beyond just fishing.

Whether you want to simply walk along the pier and enjoy the ocean breeze or take the kids to Pacific Park for fun and games, there’s something for everyone.

Pacific Park is an oceanfront amusement park on the pier. Ride the Pacific Wheel, the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel where you can see panoramic views of the ocean and the beach. You can also ride the steel roller coaster, West Coaster, or one of the ten other rides. Or play carnival games and eat some delicious treats.

The pier is also a great spot to enjoy the sunset. Find a bench, and relax as you watch the sun dip into the ocean. Or you can find a restaurant with a view where you can eat and watch the sunset at the same time.

And by this point, you’re probably hungry after a busy day. There are a few restaurants and kiosks on the pier and lots more along the beach.

Elephante is a good option that’s about a 10-minute walk from the pier. This restaurant aims to take its guests to the Mediterranean with its Italian cuisine. Its large windows give it the perfect view of the ocean. Elephante serves delicious salads, wood-fired pizzas, and fresh pasta.

Or head to Michael’s Santa Monica, a restaurant that’s been going for decades, long before most of the other restaurants in the area. Here you can expect award-winning drinks, fresh produce, and upscale Californian cuisine in an art-filled setting.

There have been many structural problems, calls to knock it down, the damage caused by Mother Nature, and also the hard times during the Great Depression and wars. But thanks to the commitment of those who wanted it to succeed, the pier has always risen from the ashes and is now a vibrant place beloved by the community , the pride and joy of Santa Monica.

The ramp leads from the coast to the beginning of the pier itself, where there is a large square-shaped platform (which can also be accessed on foot from the beach). At the end of this platform, there is a traditional pier that stretches out over the water. The pier is not only a place for a beautiful and long walk on the Pacific Ocean where you can admire romantic sunsets and beach views; it is full of life and there are activities and fun for everyone . Let’s take a closer look.

In the lower part of the building, there is the Aquarium . To access the aquarium, you must pay for admission . You can find interactive activities and the”inhabitants” of the sea such as seahorses, moray eels, jellyfish, stingrays, and sharks, to name a few. The structure can be booked for an event and is closed on Mondays. In the same section of the pier, there is the Santa Monica Pier Shop & Visitor Center , the ideal place to get souvenirs and valuable information. The atmosphere on the pier is lively: the people, the colors, the sounds, and the scents… As a result, walking on the pier turns into a pleasant and classic experience.

Tickets to Pacific Park

In the summer, there are open-air concerts on the pier, as well as movies and activities for the whole family. Along the pier, fishing enthusiasts can devote themselves to their favorite hobby; they can be confident that they will catch a lot of fish without any issues, because historically, this place has a reputation for abundant fishing .

Then you can try Mexican cuisine at Mariasol , which also overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The food is good, maybe not to the highest level, but the location makes it worth going here. The venue also has a children’s menu and bar service with cocktails, beer, wine, and drinks. Upstairs there is an event room. The last building you will see on your long walk on the pier is Route 66 Last Stop Shop , where it is possible to dine and shop.

One Day in LA: From Venice Beach to Santa Monica Pier

Every California girl knows about the best beach cities in Los Angeles right? I’m talking about Venice Beach and Santa Monica, two of my favorite California beaches, and a must-visit for anyone taking a trip to LA.

Maybe you’ve walked the boardwalk from Venice Beach to Santa Monica to take a ride on the Ferris wheel. Maybe you’ve seen a photo of one of your favorite actresses spotted at some swanky restaurant in Santa Monica. Maybe you’ve actually spotted a movie star while roaming around the city?! How exciting would that be?!

Ok, maybe you haven’t been there yet, but surely you’ve seen the famous Santa Monica Pier before. It can be spotted in movies like Iron Man and Forrest Gump. It has been spotted on tons of TV shows, and even in video games like Grand Theft Auto. I told you, it’s FAMOUS.

These are two of LA’s greatest gems, and if you haven’t heard of them, you are really missing out and I recommend you get there ASAP. You are seriously lacking the California dream.

Each time I take a road trip to Los Angeles I try to see or do something a little different because there’s just too much to do in that city I could never fit everything into one single day. This is one reason why I love Venice and Santa Monica so much because there’s always something new for me to see or do.

I’m going to show you one of my favorite day trip itineraries, which will take you from the start of the Venice Beach Boardwalk to the famous Santa Monica Pier. I recommend this itinerary if you are on a time crunch, or trying to stick to a budget. Follow along and let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!

What to Wear/Bring:

• Comfy shoes are a must since you will be walking a lot.
• Bring some dollar bills in case you decide to tip the street performers.
• Camera, extra battery, selfie stick, tripod, any other photography equipment
• Water, snacks, lunch
• Light sweater

Where to park:

There is free street parking near the Venice canals .

First stop: The Venice Canals

Since you are parking nearby anyways, it’s worth taking a stroll through the Venice Beach canals .

The original canals were built in 1905 and were built to recreate the look of the Venice, Italy canals. Most of the canals were eventually filled in to create roads, and the remaining left uncared for. The area was in poor condition for many years until rebuilt in 1993. The current canals are now an expensive area lined with multi-million dollar houses.

After your tour through the canals head west toward the ocean until you end up on Ocean Front Walk . This is the path that continues along the beach through Venice, and into Santa Monica. Once you hit this point turn right, and you will be on the Venice Beach Boardwalk.

Next stop: The Venice Boardwalk

The Venice boardwalk is an absolute must at least once in your life. Here are the spots along the boardwalk that are worth taking a look at:

Muscle Beach. You may have heard about the famous gym where Arnold Schwarzenegger used to work out. You can literally watch muscle men (and women) during their workout at this outdoor gym directly on the boardwalk. If you want, you can pay $10 for a day pass and join them.

Graffiti Art Walls. This is a great spot to get some cool looking photos! You can find them on the beach shortly after Muscle Beach. Just look for the walls and palm trees that have graffiti on them! You can appreciate the art walls for free, but if you actually want to paint you need a permit.

Skate Park. A little further north of the Art Walls is the Skate Park. Not much to see here unless you are into skateboarding, but it’s still worth taking a look at!

Street Performers & Artists. As you continue walking the boardwalk you will notice a lot of local artists selling their items. If you get lucky you may also come across a good street performer. If you find a large group of people gathering try to take a look and see if the performance is worth watching. This is where your dollar bills come in handy in case you want to tip them.

Venice Pride Lifeguard Tower. For an Instagram-worthy photo head over to the Venice Pride Lifeguard Tower. When you reach Brooks Avenue on the boardwalk look left and you should be able to find this rainbow-colored tower. Take a moment to relax and enjoy the beach. This might also be a good time to eat your lunch!

Next Stop: Bicycle Rentals

Since most of the action on the boardwalk is nearing the end, it’s time to decide if you want to walk the rest of Venice Beach to Santa Monica or rent bicycles. You can see the Santa Monica pier at this point, and it may look close but it is about a 2-mile walk.

Another great option is to rent a “Bird”, which is an electric scooter, and scoot your way to the pier!

On the Venice Beach Boardwalk, you can rent beach cruiser bicycles . Make sure to ask for a bike lock since you will need to lock it once you reach the Santa Monica Pier.

Once you are ready to ride or scoot, just continue north on the designated bike path towards the Santa Monica Pier. You will know you are on the bike path since there should be many other bikes, and the path itself looks like a street with the painted lines. Be cautious of pedestrians!

Next Stop: Santa Monica Pier

A trip to Los Angeles is not complete without a stop at the iconic Santa Monica Pier . It is on my Southern California Bucket List Challenge after all. This is the final point on the famous Route 66 and home to the only over-water Ferris wheel in California.

Right before the pier along the bike path, there are several places to lock up your bicycles. Find a spot and head on up to the pier. If you rented a Bird scooter, you can end your ride and drop it. You can find another one once you are ready to leave.

Take a moment to take in the scenery and snap a few photos!

Towards the beginning of the pier is the Route 66 sign, if you are patient you can try to get a photo at the sign. There are usually tons of people in this spot.

On the left side of the pier is Pacific Park , which is free to enter but you pay for each individual ride. The Ferris wheel is my recommendation since it offers the best views, plus it’s so iconic how could you not?! The ticket prices are currently $8 per person.

This might be a good time to take a lunch break if you haven’t already. The Pier has several food options from seafood to burgers!

Once you have seen enough of the pier remember to head back to return your rental bicycles before the rental time is up. After you return your bikes head on over to the last stop on the itinerary!

Last Stop: Venice Sign

Head back towards the beginning of the Venice boardwalk and once you reach Windward Avenue, take a left. One block up you will see the VENICE sign hanging over the street. This is a classic Instagram-worthy shot, but it might take you a few tries! Use the crosswalks to get different angles of the sign until you get one shot that you like.

This itinerary should give you a good overview of both Venice and Santa Monica. If you are not too tired hang out on the beach and wait for the sunset!

coming from a developing country like indonesia, when i saw the title, i thought that $40 was still quite high to be honest. but then i suppose there’s a huge gap between the living cost here and there. 😛

however, i definitely love the scene there and it’s a really good idea about bike rental to stroll around. also, i suppose it’s gonna be a great idea to even arrange some picnics somewhere. maybe do something like BYOS. bring your own sandwich. *lol*

Hi, what a cool itinerary! but what do you mean when you say “If you rented a Bird scooter, you can end your ride and drop it. You can find another one once you are ready to leave.” My wife and I are planning to go there in a couple of months. We are from Mexico so excuseme if didnt understand that part. Do i just leave the bird scooter? i dont need to returner it?.

Thanks exactly what that means! They do have some stricter rules since the time I wrote this post, but basically, you pick one up wherever you find it and drop it off and end your ride whenever you would like. You will have to make sure you don’t drop it off/park it in certain areas (like in the street or middle of the sidewalk), but the app will tell you where it is safe to park it.

Tourists, A-list celebrities, families, bachelor and bachelorette parties, couples on dates — they all know that one of the best things to do in Santa Monica is to head down to the Santa Monica Pier.

While you’re there, a scrumptious meal is practically a requirement. From celebrity-favorite haunts to food carts offering quick eats on demand, these Santa Monica Pier restaurants are everything your oh-so-discerning palate has been waiting for.

Seafood dishes and waterfront dining go together, like clams, oregano, ahi, and avocado. On the Santa Monica Pier, you can eat fresh, tasty fish and crustacean dishes.

1. The Albright

Yunnie and Greg Morena run a tight ship at The Albright , a pier restaurant that first launched in 1977. The menu focuses on sustainable seafood and local California ingredients, and the drinks menu, replete with craft beer and wine, follows the same ethos.

Appetizers lead the way, such as a crispy calamari dish with chipotle aioli and Baja ceviche with mahi-mahi and shrimp. Then come classics, such as fish and chips and seared salmon with arugula pesto.

Splurge on fresh seafood, charged according to market pricing. Raw oysters come straight from the boat. Whole lobsters, Dungeness crab, and rock crab wait their turn in The Albright’s in-house saltwater tank. Add drawn butter and a little corn on the cob, and enjoy your feast!

2. Rusty’s Santa Monica Pier

Rusty’s Santa Monica Pier is a sister restaurant to The Albright. It has the same management team, but Rusty’s has a more party-ready feel versus the laid-back loungey vibe you get down the street. People come here to eat, drink, and party, especially when karaoke and DJ-led jams kick up on the weekends.

An outdoor patio helps increase capacity and allows you to take your kicked-back chats outside. The menu is an accessible mishmash of savory appetizers, fresh salads, and entrées, such as penne pesto pasta and grilled salmon with lemon butter sauce.

Come by during happy hour for nacho fries, fried pickles, and coconut-crusted shrimp with Thai chili dipping sauce. All are priced to encourage doubling up, and they go perfectly with signature cocktails, such as Rusty’s Nosotros Mezcal Ruby Red Paloma (tart and fruity) and Tennessee Mint Peach Tea (whiskey with an herbal peach punch).

We’ll give you three guesses of what The Lobster seafood restaurant specializes in, but we bet it’ll only take you a second to figure out how tasty dinner here can be. The Lobster opened its doors at the corner of Ocean Avenue and the Santa Monica Pier in 1923, giving it a century-long track record of culinary excellence.

Its position at the western end of Route 66 makes the restaurant an icon for travelers who come for the name and stay for the grub. And boy, is that grub good.

An oyster sampler, Santa Barbara uni with lemon and ponzu, and Nantucket Bay scallops with scallion-ginger marinade and smoked roe showcase Chef Govind Armstrong’s penchant for balanced dishes with lots of seafood-friendly acid.

Continue with steamed or grilled Maine lobster, black chitarra pasta, or a big plate of crab-fried rice with hot honey rainbow carrots on the side. Cocktails come with quirky names, such as 99 Problems But a Peach Ain’t One and Khee to My Success.

Pair those with views of the Ferris wheel and pier on one side and palm trees on the other for a nice setup indeed.

4. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

You may recognize the name of this Santa Monica Pier food emporium from a little movie called Forrest Gump. What started as a fictional restaurant chain evolved into a real line of eateries dubbed Bubba Gump Shrimp Co .

The menu takes cues from the movie’s Southern setting. (Forrest was born and raised in Alabama.) Movie memorabilia lines the restaurant’s walls. As for the food itself, expect shrimp cooked in every way and with every accompaniment imaginable — as far as Southern cuisine goes.

This restaurant’s chefs steam shrimp in beer, stir it into mac and cheese, serve it chilled with cocktail sauce, batter it, fry it, and make it into gumbo. The occasional piece of flame-grilled salmon and earth-bound options, such as pork ribs and fried chicken, ensure there’s something for everyone.

But let’s face it — we’re all here for the shrimp — and maybe that Box O’ Chocolates for dessert. You may not know what you'll get, but we bet it’ll be delicious.

5. Big Dean’s Ocean Front Café

If you plunked your favorite neighborhood sports bar on the Santa Monica Pier, it might look and feel like Big Dean’s Ocean Front Café . A whopping 23 TVs are positioned around the restaurant, all tuned in to whatever big-time sporting events are on the docket.

The food is what you’d hope for when you’re starving by the seventh-inning stretch or celebrating your team’s latest touchdown. Buffalo wings, world-famous burgers, tacos, seafood baskets, and sandwiches make it easy to eat with one hand and point at the screen with the other.

Draft beers come in 20- and 32-ounce sizes, and there are specialty beverages (hard seltzer, cider, etc.). Nonalcoholic options are also available. And with the pier’s carousel practically across the street, you can go for a ride at Pacific Park, refresh at Big Dean’s, and be back exploring before you know it.

6. Pier Burger

Sometimes, all you want is a simple burger and a milkshake. At Pier Burger , simplicity and flavor happily coexist on a short, sweet, and totally tempting menu. The menu includes three burger options, the same number of hot dogs to try, crispy chicken and local sea bass on buns, as well as a mix of adult and nonalcoholic beverages.

Finish with a milkshake, float, or Pier’s signature concretes — the unique blend of chocolate custard, chocolate chunks, Oreo cookies, and M&M's will make your sweet tooth jump up and say hooray.

7. Seaside on the Pier

Seaside on the Pier is the next best thing to a picnic on a Santa Monica beach . As a bonus, you won’t even have to examine every bite of your salad for sand. It all starts with brunch. Here, you can scarf down a breakfast burrito or a syrup-doused pile of buttermilk pancakes with a mimosa or michelada.

Later on, the menu shifts to lunch and dinner favorites. It's brimming with crab cakes with lemon-caper remoulade, a lobster BLT, burgers, pizza, and entrées, such as chicken alfredo and 12-ounce rib-eye steaks.

8. MariaSol Cantina

The team at Santa Monica Pier's MariaSol brings the beachy cuisine of Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas to the very end of the Santa Monica Pier. Sample dishes like crab enchiladas, ahi poke tostadas, carne asada wet burritos, and Puerto Nuevo lobster plates with the rolling waves as your soundtrack.

As Restaurant Guru’s 2022 Best Mexican Restaurant, Sol-Agave in Santa Monica has a reputation to live up to — and it does that with aplomb. Although the concept began as a 17-foot food truck, there are now a slew of locations in Southern California, including the one by the Santa Monica Pier.

Dishes are full of fresh seafood, quality produce, and meats cooked in accordance with tradition. The guacamole sampler is a real crowd-pleaser. Each dollop of avocado dip is topped with langosta, carnitas, or a simple pico garnish. Fried calamari has a similar twist, this time courtesy of a queso fresco sprinkle and chipotle aioli.

Even tried-and-true entrées, like tenderloin medallions, have been reimagined with orange chipotle sauce, mango, and tamarind glaze. For seafood, try the pulpo. This octopus-based creation is smoky from time on the grill, while guajillo oil sauce, veggies, and champagne vinaigrette add character, crunch, and acidity.

The humble hot dog gets a gourmet makeover at the Japadog food stand , an award-winning concept that introduces a high-end hot dog cart experience to the Santa Monica Pier. Japadog is a bridge between American and Japanese cuisine. At Japadog, the all-American hot dog is adorned with everything from teriyaki mayo to soba noodles.

KazuNori restaurant calls itself The Original Hand Roll Bar and has even registered a trademark for the moniker. Hand rolls are crispy sheets of nori wrapped around warm rice and a strategic assembly of top-notch ingredients.

There are two ways to order. You can walk up to the counter and buy portable eats, such as 3-hand roll combos, sashimi, and hand rolls sold à la carte.

It also has a to-go menu with a toro bento box and a hand roll kit with enough goodies to make 20 hand rolls. It sounds like the perfect setup for a Japanese beach picnic on the shores of California, and we're here for it!

There are many spots for breakfast along Montana Avenue, all very good. If you really want to be near the Pier for breakfast, go to any of the hotels like the Georgian, or Cora’s Coffee Shop, Sweet Maple, or Blue Daisy.

Regent Hotels & Resorts is set to open a brand-new property steps from Santa Monica Pier on an idyllic stretch of the California coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The brand’s latest outpost will feature 143 elegant guest rooms and 24 suites decorated in soothing shades of cream and gray. For a truly memorable stay, consider booking the Santa Monica Presidential Suite – a sprawling abode up on the eighth floor, equipped with a games room, separate living room and four Juliet balconies. Even the standard rooms start at 720 sq ft and boast lavish bathrooms complete with soaking tubs and rainfall showers.
