The Best Dolphin Cruise in Alabama

This is our most popular cruise offering-a fan favorite! Our two-hour Dolphin and Nature tour departs from the Wharf Marina in Orange Beach, Alabama. This is a fun, educational tour that consists of locating and learning about our resident dolphin pod, as well as learning about the local wildlife [flora and fauna] that call the back bays home !

Our knowledgeable tour guides and captain point out the local flora and fauna. You may see osprey and their nests, herons, bald eagles, and red-tailed hawks.

The Explorer allows us to get as close as safely possible to the banks and the local marine and wildlife. Because the boat only needs 16 to 18 inches of water underneath, we can sneak into our local estuaries, where few other boats can go, providing you with a truly unique and memorable experience.

Kids become Jr. Co-Captains when they board so they can assist the Captain!

* Please note: we are not handicapped accessible, and we do not permit strollers on board.*

**The Explorer also offers Private Cruises; Perfect for School Field Trips, Family Reunions, and Corporate Outings.**

Customers must be prepared to show a physical, valid form of ID when ordering alcoholic beverages. You must be at least 21 years of age to order and consume alcoholic beverages. Expired IDs are NOT valid. Valid forms of ID include:

  • Non-expired, valid driver’s license
  • Valid U.S. Uniformed Service Identification [Military ID]
  • Valid passport
  • Valid Alabama non-drivers ID issued by Dept. of Public Safety

"I highly recommend Dolphin Tales in Orange Beach, FL! The woman was our Guide and was so knowledgeable and great with the kids in our group! "These guys are HANDS DOWN the very best when it comes to Dolphin Cruises! We didn't know that it was their only day off and yet they didn't want to disappoint us so they came in anyways. It was TOTALLY WORTH THE MONEY WE PAID and we will ONLY choose them again when we return next summer!"

"They just know where to find the dolphins! They also gave us some history about the surrounding area. Overall, it was a great experience, did not feel rushed, and we weren't crowded on the boat. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it, but I actually had a blast! They even gave us time to grab some last minute drinks for the morning cruise!"

"First off let me say, BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE ever! The day of the cruise, the weather was not the friendliest. Tabitha stayed in contact and when the weather permitted, told us that Captain Bart would be waiting for our arrival. Mr. Bart did his best to locate the dolphins, EVEN AFTER a RAINSTORM for our kids!"

A Fun Experience You Won't Want to Miss!

Southern Rose Parasailing & Dolphin Cruises

We had so much fun! The captain was amazing and kept us well entertained. He knew right where to find the dolphins and how to get them interacting with us. It was an amazing experience. We had family who booked with a different company and were jealous when the saw and heard how much fun we had. I highly recommend Southern Rose Dolphin Cruises!

This was a great cruise to see the dolphins! The Captain was very knowledgeable about the entire surroundings and about the dolphins! The crew was very friendly and helpful for the entire cruise. This lasted about 2 hours! I would definitely recommend this!

This was our second year in a row for parasailing with this company. This year my wife and 3 of our children did the parasailing. We all absolutely loved it. The guys on the boat (I apologize for not remembering names) made it fun and exciting. We really enjoyed the way they interacted with everyone on the boat. We will definitely be back and use them again.

Chase and Giovanni were the best! I was terrified at first, and with their jokes, I started feeling way better! I definitely recommend going parasailing with them!

We took our two kids on the morning dolphin cruise. It was a great time. The staff was very friendly and entertaining. We saw lots of dolphins and had the dolphins surfing along side of the boat. There was plenty of room on the boat to move around and they had a nice selection a beverages. The captain was very knowledgeable and provided neat trivia about dolphin, Ono Island and the local area. We will definitely be taking the Southern Rose again when we are in Orange Beach.

I took my eighteen year old granddaughter on the Sunset Dolphin Cruise. We had such a great time! The captain was witty and informative. The other staff were friendly and helpful. We saw many dolphins and the sunset was spectacular! I look forwarding to returning with my other grandchildren so they can experience it. It was a wonderful way to make a memory.

We so enjoyed our time on board the Southern Rose. The Captain and the crew were wonderful and involved. We could have gone on for hours.... dolphins, wonderful ocean breeze and beautiful sunset. Thank you!!

We went out on the first boat ride of the season and loved it all! Our captain and crew were very helpful in making it a memorable trip.We were impressed with how they sent out spotters to find where the dolphins were hanging out so we could see as many as possible.I would highly recommend this tour!

There are so many unique things to do in Gulf Shores, AL. At the top of the list is a dolphin cruise! It is exactly what it sounds like: a trip out to sea on a sight seeing boat to check out some beautiful dolphins in their natural habitat.

But, how do you choose a cruise? We’re here to help you find the best dolphin cruise in Gulf Shores, AL for your family (because every family is different).

What can you expect from a Dolphin Cruise?

Most dolphin cruises take 30-60 people out on a tour boat to see dolphins play in their natural habitat. The tour itself lasts about an hour and a half from start to finish and generally includes a tour guide talking over a loud speaker, 20-30 minutes of dolphin viewing, an experience with at least one other aquatic creature (think crab, fish, etc.) and access to snacks and restrooms.

on board a dolphin cruise tour boat

All dolphin cruises we have researched are approved for all ages but do have a minimum weight requirement for infants due to the required life vests. Most weight requirements begin around 18 lbs.

We would personally recommend a dolphin cruise for ages 3 and up, but some two year olds may be ready for the experience also. If you are considering a dolphin cruise with a younger toddler, we highly recommend choosing a cruise that is more family oriented and “lively” (see #4 on our list).

The Best Dolphin Cruises in Gulf Shores

To help break down the information, we created boxes that highlight all of the necessary info and allow you to easily compare all of the recommended cruises. Continue reading reading below each box for a more detailed description of each tour.

  • 6 Most Idyllic Small Towns in Alabama

With nearly half of Alabama residents living in rural areas, a true visit to Alabama would not be complete without visiting its countryside communities and laid-back towns. By visiting charming towns such as Magnolia Springs or coastal paradises such as Gulf Shores, it becomes clear why so many people prefer the state’s small-town life to the hustle of the big cities. Hidden gems lie at every turn, and the tight-knit sense of community in the towns is unbeatable. Keep reading to dive into the six most idyllic small towns in Alabama and understand the intricacies behind why they are so special to its residents and tourists alike.

Magnolia Springs

Magnolia Springs, Alabama.

The town of Magnolia Springs , perched along the Magnolia River, may be small but is rich in history and charm. Travelers can peruse through a variety of boutiques, tea shops, galleries, and bookstores in and around the town, as well as immerse themselves in the town’s history by staying in historic inns such as the highly-rated Magnolia Springs Bed and Breakfast, a restored inn that was built in 1897.

Make sure to save your appetite for Jesse’s restaurant, a mouthwatering steakhouse serving fresh fish and aged steaks, and a building that has been a staple of Magnolia Springs for over 75 years. A short 10-minute drive will take travelers to Weeks Bay Reserve, which features 6,000 acres of bogs and wetlands. Walking along the self-guided trails of this reserve, visitors may have the chance to observe an array of unique wildlife species and fish.

Dauphin Island

Aerial view of Fort Gaines at Dauphin Island, Alabama.

A weekend on Dauphin Island provides the opportunity to immerse oneself in the slow, laid-back Gulf Coast lifestyle. Stopping by the Dauphin Island Welcome Center is a great place to start, as friendly guides will offer recommendations to visitors to enhance their experience on the island. A myriad of local shops, restaurants, and galleries compose the small town’s center, with beaches surrounding them. Along the beaches, locals and tourists enjoy swimming, surfing, flying kites, and searching for shells along the shoreline.

On the east side of the island, history lovers will appreciate Fort Gaines, a well-preserved, crucial site during the Civil War that also offers panoramic views over the Gulf of Mexico. Nearby stands the impressive Audubon Bird Sanctuary, 164 acres of woodlands with walking trails and many unique, migrating bird species. Continuing our exploration of the island’s wildlife, a visit to the Alabama Aquarium allows travelers to explore the four major habitats of coastal Alabama and see a variety of marine species.

Tuscumbia has a rich history dating back to 1820, with the small town serving as an early hub for commerce and agriculture. In fact, it built the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains. Today, visitors can experience this historic legacy in person through the beautiful historic district as well as appreciate the town’s surrounding nature preserves, a river, and trails. To appreciate the history, visitors can stroll through the historic downtown district or tour the Belle Mont Mansion, which features gorgeous architecture from 1828. They can also attend a quilt show on the premises that takes place annually in October.

To enjoy local flora and fauna, travelers can take a trip out to the Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve, which acts as a sanctuary for native species and consists of over 15 miles of hiking trails, picnicking and camping sites, and creek wading. Tuscumbia has a musical history as well. Visit the Alabama Music Hall of Fame to see memorabilia from some of Alabama’s most famed musicians, such as Lionel Richie, Nat King Cole, and Tammy Wynette.

Gulf Shores

Aerial City view of the Gulf Shores, Alabama, USA.

Teeming with wildlife, sandy beaches, and sunny days, Gulf Shores is a vacationer’s paradise. Miles of pristine beaches with white quartz sand surround the town. Gulf State Park is an excellent option for a beach day, featuring wide beaches accompanied by sand dunes, picnic areas, boardwalks, and more. Water sports are abundant, with opportunities to go diving, boating, kayaking, snorkeling, jet skiing, and more. Travelers can also go on a dolphin cruise or sail in the sea at sunset.

Just minutes from the beach lies a network of nature trails known as The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, where visitors can explore the nine different ecosystems of the Gulf Shores area. For travelers looking for a memorable lodging experience, the Original Romar House Bed and Breakfast Inn is a nearby seaside bed and breakfast in a historic home that will immerse its guests in the southern Alabama experience.

Alabama Gulf Coast Sunset on Mobile Bay.

The spirited coastal town of Fairhope , with its southern hospitality, will feel like a second home to visitors. Meandering through the town’s French Quarter, travelers will love the quaint architecture, cozy shops, and cobblestone courtyard. Grab a coffee to go and enjoy the stunning, serene views of Mobile Bay. Aerial view of Loxley, Alabama.

Loxley has a deep cultural and historical heritage dating back to the 19th century when John Loxley founded it as a lumber camp. Sitting about 20 minutes outside of Mobile , Alabama, it serves as a small, peaceful suburb where residents can come to rest. Loxley’s annual Baldwin County Strawberry Festival started in 1987, and it has largely put it on the map for tourists. The festival has fun for the whole family, including food vendors, arts and crafts, a carnival, an antique car show, live music, and its famous strawberry shortcake! For architecture lovers, the nearby Malbis Plantation Greek Orthodox Church has gorgeous Byzantine architecture, stained glass windows, and carved marble that visitors will love. The Loxley area is filled with mouthwatering Southern cuisine as well, such as the Southwood Kitchen, which will certainly provide a delicious Southern-style meal for those who visit.

As one journeys through the picturesque landscapes and vibrant communities of Alabama's small towns, it is impossible not to be captivated by the genuine warmth, hospitality, and culture that permeates every corner. From the historic legacy of Tuscumbia to the coastal charm of Fairhope, each town offers a unique glimpse into the state’s culture and wonderfully represents the best aspects of Southern charm and hospitality that visitors from all over the world can enjoy.

This Is the No. 1 Family Beach Vacation Spot in the U.S.

While Alabama might not be the obvious choice for a beach vacation, Gulf Shores claims the top spot.

larrybraunphotography.com/Getty Images

If your idea of a perfect summer involves soaking up warm sunrays and splashing in refreshing waves, America’s coastlines are brimming with delightful seaside towns just waiting to be discovered. U.S. News and World Report recently analyzed destinations across the U.S., considering factors like safe waters, kid-friendly attractions, restaurants, accommodations, and prices to determine the best family beach vacations in the U.S.

While Alabama might not be the obvious choice for a beach vacation, Gulf Shores claims the top spot, with 32 miles of pristine white sands. Whether you're seeking a taste of history at Fort Morgan, exhilarating thrills at Waterville USA, or peaceful hikes at Gulf State Park, there’s something to keep every family member engaged. Stay at the Beach Club Resort , an 86-acre village-style property offering beachfront condos, lakeside cottages, and an array of amenities, including two pools, five dining options, an arcade, and a playground.

Outer Banks, North Carolina, is second on the list, a premier surfing destination on the East Coast. This idyllic cluster of barrier islands is home to the wild horses of Corolla, five historic lighthouses, and the iconic Wright Brothers Memorial in Kitty Hawk, where the world’s first powered flight took place. While there are several luxury properties like Sanderling Resort , renting a vacation house near the beach is also an excellent option, especially for large families.

Anna Maria Island in Florida takes third place, with seven miles of glistening beaches, mesmerizing sunsets, and various family-friendly activities ranging from interacting with marine life at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium to painting sand dollars at Shiny Fish Emporium. Of course, seafood is a must when visiting the island and the nearby Cortez Historic Fishing Village, with local spots like Anna Maria Oyster Bar, Tide Tables, and Sandbar Seafood & Spirits serving fresh catches daily. Exploring the island has never been easier, thanks to a free trolley system and a new ferry service that links the island to downtown Bradenton’s Riverwalk.

Ranked fourth is Kiawah Island , South Carolina, which is home to the luxurious Kiawah Island Golf Resort . With a vast portion of its land designated as protected habitat, this Lowcountry hideaway south of Charleston invites visitors to revel in a slower pace of life and reconnect with nature. The best way to see the island is to hop on a bike and pedal along its 30-mile network of paths, including Kiawah Beachwalker Park, the island’s only public beach.

Destin , Florida, rounds out the top five family beach destinations. Alongside its sister city, Fort Walton Beach, this jewel of a town is renowned for its crystal-clear emerald waters and sugar-like sands. Kids will love taking a dolphin cruise with companies like Smile and Wave Adventures, learning about marine animals at Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, and visiting Gator Beach, where they can safely interact with alligators. As for dining and accommodations, options are numerous, with kid-approved restaurants like Rockin’ Tacos, Harbor Docks, and Lulu’s and cozy beach resorts like Henderson Beach Resort and Beal House Fort Walton Beach .
