10 Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR

Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Cover

Sharing is caring!

Lightweight travel trailers under 4000 lbs have many advantages. Typically smaller and more compact, these RVs are easy to tow and park. But there is a tradeoff. Less square footage also means manufacturers are forced to pick and choose which amenities to include and which to skip. Thankfully, innovative floorplans and advancements in manufacturing are revolutionizing the lightweight camper industry.

There are more lightweight camper options on the market now than ever before. We’ve listed our favorite travel trailers under 4000 lbs to help you choose which is best for you.

What’s the Difference Between Dry Weight and GVWR?

What’s the Difference Between Dry Weight and GVWR

When talking about camper weight, it’s important to distinguish between dry weight and GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating. Dry weight refers to how much the camper weighs when it rolls off the production line. This measurement doesn’t consider any fluids or other cargo on board.

Alternately, GVWR refers to the maximum total safe weight of the camper as advised by the manufacturer. Always reference GVWR when looking at your vehicle’s towing capacity and your camper’s carrying capacity.

Dry weight can be a noteworthy statistic. But GVWR refers to the total amount the camper weighs as it rolls down the road and is, therefore, the more important measurement. That’s why we only included travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR is on our list of the best lightweight campers.

The Importance of Towing Beneath Your Vehicle’s Tow Capacity

Importance of Towing Beneath Your Vehicle’s Tow Capacity

If you exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity, the results can be disastrous. An overloaded towing setup can cause the travel trailer to sway. This, in turn, can cause you to crash. If you get into an accident, insurance companies often refuse to pay once they learn you’ve exceeded your vehicle’s towing capacity.

Even if you avoid an accident, towing beyond your limits can damage the vehicle. Overloading your tow vehicle can strain the engine and transmission and cause your brakes and tires to wear faster.

A good rule of thumb is to choose a camper with GVWR at 90% or below your vehicle’s towing capacity for extra safety. For travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR, you’ll want to choose a vehicle with a tow rating of at least 4,444 lbs.

3. Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB

Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB Exterior

✅ By incorporating a Murphy bed, the Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB makes room for one of the largest wardrobes and bathrooms in any travel trailer under 4000 lbs.

⛔ The Sonic Lite 150VRB lacks the kitchen cabinet and countertop space that other small travel trailers offer.

  • UVW: 3,180 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 480 lbs.
  • Length: 19.11 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,885 lbs.
  • CCC: 705 lbs.

Full-time camping couples will love some of the higher-end features that come standard in the Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB . The rear bathroom is one of the largest you’ll find in a travel trailer under 4000 lbs. The corner shower with skylight offers plenty of headroom. Likewise, the porcelain toilet and large vanity will remind you of home. The bathroom also boasts tons of storage; in addition to the vanity, there is a huge closet.

Speaking of clothing storage, you’ll also find a wardrobe on either side of the Murphy bed. One of our favorite features of this Murphy-bed area is another type of dual storage. On either side of the mattress is a hidden cubby for charging your phone or keeping a bedside glass of water.

When the Murphy bed is not in bed mode, it easily converts to a sofa. Use the included table to create a pseudo-dinette. Or you can take the table outside for tailgate or campfire dining. Whether you choose a short weekend trip or a longer adventure, the Sonic Lite 150 VRB will have you feeling right at home.

4. inTech Sol Dawn

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR InTech Sol Dawn Exterior

✅ Despite the compact floorplan, the inTech Sol Dawn boasts a tremendous amount of storage space and one of the best wet baths on the market.

⛔ As a reimagined teardrop camper, this travel trailer lacks headroom and can be uncomfortable for taller RVers.

  • UVW: 2,650 or 2,731 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 280 or 310 lbs.
  • Length: 16 ft.
  • CCC: 805 or 910 lbs.

The Sol Dawn is InTech’s unique take on a teardrop camper. Its unique design boasts more headroom and more natural light than traditional teardrops. This is partly because of the classic InTech front panoramic window that spans the front of the camper.

Surrounded by this window is the multi-configurable U-shaped dinette. You can use this space to dine or as two twin beds. Simply pivot the table, and you can create a space that’s a half bed and half dinette. A final option is to drop the table down and create one large oversized bed. Regardless of your configuration, you’ll have easy access to the many overhead front storage cabinets.

Beyond the versatility of the front seating/sleeping area, the Sol Dawn boasts one of the best wet baths on the market. The door is double-sealed to prevent any water leakage. The toilet is porcelain, and the lighting is plentiful. A skylight gives you more headroom, and the adjustable height shower head makes bathing a comfortable experience for travelers of any size.

Although geared towards couples, the InTech Sol Dawn is a versatile little camper that can also work well for friends or young families. If you decide to get the off-road version, the upgraded features add a bit more weight, but you’ll find it’s worth it as you head into the backcountry.

5. Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Mini Max

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Mini Max Exterior

✅ Little Guy Mini Max is a traditional teardrop camper with an interior kitchen and open floor plan.

⛔ Storage space is in short supply in this teardrop camper.

  • UVW: 2,320 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 240 lbs.
  • Length: 17.2 ft.
  • CCC: 1,180 lbs.

From the outside, this travel trailer under 4000 lbs resembles other traditional teardrops. But unlike other teardrop campers, the Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Mini Max’s kitchen is located inside rather than in an outdoor back hatch.

You might worry that the Mini Max would feel less spacious by moving the kitchen inside than some of its counterparts. Surprisingly, Min Max creates an open floorplan by tucking the kitchen and bathroom under the camper’s curved front wall.

The main bed that converts into a dinette by day is another feature that opens up the Mini Max floor plan. Couples who love the look and aerodynamic benefits of a teardrop, but the openness of a traditional travel trailer, will love the Little Guy Mini Max.

6. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX Floorplan

✅ The Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX boasts sleeping space for five, making it a great lightweight camper for big families.

⛔ Despite its nearly 22-foot length, the Ultra Lite 16BHX has a smaller-than-average dinette that may be a tight fit for a large family.

  • UVW: 3,144 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 370 lbs.
  • Length: 21.6 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,870 lbs.
  • CCC: 726 lbs.

At nearly 22 feet in length, the Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX is one of the longest on our list of the best travel trailers under 4000 lbs. Palomino expertly uses that space to create a floor plan perfect for families. With bunk beds, a dinette bed, and a front queen bed, this RV easily accommodates a family of five.

In addition to the ample sleeping room, young families will also appreciate the tub shower in the bathroom. Unlike many other compact campers that only offer a wet bath, the Puma Ultra Lite has a tub/shower combo large enough to give little ones a bath.

The RV is great for families because of the sleeping and bathroom arrangement. But, you’ll find the tradeoff is that the Puma Ultra Lite offers only a limited amount of kitchen storage and a smaller-than-typical dinette. Still, this camper under 4000 lbs could be a perfect choice for families that prefer outdoor picnic table meals.

7. Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH Exterior

✅ This versatile travel trailer with bunk beds and a large dinette is great for families.

⛔ This Jay Flight has no dedicated owner’s bedroom space. Instead, it boasts an oversized dinette that transforms into a bed at night.

  • UVW: 2,810 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 250 lbs.
  • Length: 18 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,600 lbs.
  • CCC: 790 lbs.

The Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH is another great family travel trailer under 4000 lbs. Measuring nearly four feet shorter, this Jay flight offers many of the same features of the Palomino in an even smaller footprint.

You’ll find sturdy, plywood-constructed bunk beds that each accommodate up to 300 pounds. Unlike the bunks in other small campers, these are 80% enclosed. This is a great setup for younger children because it safeguards against rolling and provides a less distracting sleep environment.

Like the Palomino, this Jay Flight also has a convenient tub/shower combo. One difference you’ll notice between the Palomino and the Jay Flight is the latter has a much larger and deeper dinette. Parents will have to transform the dinette into a bed each night. But for families that don’t mind this extra step and appreciate a table that can seat the whole crew, the Jay Flight SLX 154BH is a great choice.

8.  Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17BH

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17BH Exterior

✅ The Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is one of the only teardrop campers to sleep four and offer bunk beds.

⛔ Although this travel trailer is large by teardrop standards, it isn’t quite large enough to incorporate a dry bath. Instead, you’ll find a shower/toilet combo situated right in the middle of your living space.

  • UVW: 2,360 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 320 lbs.
  • GVWR: 3,320 lbs.
  • CCC: 760 lbs.

The Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is an exceptional travel trailer under 4000 lbs. It’s rare to find a teardrop camper that sleeps more than two, but this Bushwhacker Plus does just that.

All of the sleeping spaces in this travel trailer are tucked under the lowest curved parts of the ceiling. This allows you to enjoy the aerodynamic and fuel-efficient benefits of the teardrop shape without sacrificing headroom in the main living space.

The bunks span the width of the front of the camper, while the main bed/dinette spans the back. While in dinette mode, the table pivots so you can easily fit the whole family. The dinette’s proximity to the entertainment hookups also means everyone can relax and watch a movie together. Teardrop campers are not often considered family RVs, but the Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is the exception.

9. Forest River No Boundaries (NOBO) 10.6

Forest River No Boundaries NOBO 10.6 Exterior

✅ This compact toy hauler can go anywhere and boasts both a low GVWR and a large CCC.

⛔ This no-frills toy hauler lacks both a bathroom and an indoor kitchen space.

  • UVW: 2,255 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 288 lbs.
  • Length: 13.10 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,788 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,533 lbs.

Like all No Boundaries campers by Forest River, the NOBO 10.6 is designed to go anywhere. Offroad tires, an enclosed underbelly, and a torsion flex axle with independent suspension allow this small camper to be towed just about anywhere. Once off the beaten path, boondockers will appreciate the space for two deep cycle batteries and the included solar prep.

Designed to get you out and enjoying the great outdoors, this travel trailer under 4000 lbs has an exclusively outdoor kitchen. Interior space is reserved for a basic sofa that transforms into a bed. The simplicity of the interior floorplan means you can easily stack or remove the cushions to make room for a dirt bike or four-wheeler.

When you aren’t offroading, you’ll love the ample outdoor living space offered in the NOBO 10.6. You can choose to sleep beneath the stars in the optional rooftop tent. You can also add a batwing canopy that wraps around half the trailer and triples the outdoor entertainment space. True adventures and nature enthusiasts will appreciate all the NOBO 10.6 offers.

10. KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch

KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch Exterior

✅ The KZ RV Escape E17 hatch is a versatile trailer with room for four.

⛔ This narrow trailer offers a smaller than typical garage space as compared to other toy haulers of this length.

  • UVW: 3,320 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 550 lbs.
  • Length: 22 ft.
  • GVWR: 4,000 lbs.
  • CCC: 680 lbs.

The KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch is an unconventional and very versatile toy hauler trailer under 4000 lbs. Like other toy haulers, the back area of this camper converts from a garage to a living space. However, the hatch feature is unique compared with a typical toy hauler’s ramp.

Although this hatch provides a nice secondary awning for outdoor living, the lack of a ramp makes loading heavier vehicles difficult. Since the carrying capacity and garage space are both small, it’s best to stick to hauling toys like bikes and kayaks in this small travel trailer. Still, the convenient back hatch makes loading and unloading these toys and other camping essentials much easier.

What the Escape E17 lacks in garage space makes up for in interior amenities. The modern farmhouse decor gives the camper an upscale feel. The huge wardrobe, full-length pantry, and large refrigerator are all features not typically found in other toy haulers at this price point.

In many ways, this small travel trailer under 4000 lbs GVWR is the best of both the toy hauler and traditional travel trailer worlds.

Why Would You Want a Lightweight Trailer?

Why Would You Want a Lightweight Trailer

Lightweight trailers are easily towable behind mid-sized SUVs and small trucks. They are also more fuel-efficient and budget-friendly. Lightweight travel trailers are also usually on the smaller side. This makes them easier to park and store than their larger, heavier counterparts.

As much as a compact floorplan can be an advantage of a lightweight trailer, it can also be a disadvantage. A smaller footprint means that lightweight trailers cannot offer all of the features and amenities that larger campers boast.

What Kind of Vehicle Can Tow a 4000 lbs Travel Trailer?

What Kind of Vehicle Can Tow a 4000 lb Travel Trailer

One of the great things about lightweight travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR is that a wide variety of vehicles can tow them.

Mid-sized SUVs with tow ratings of just 5,000 lbs. will pull the campers on our list just fine. Quarter-ton pickup trucks are also great tow vehicles for small travel trailers.

Whether you prefer the extra seating of an SUV, the extra cargo space of a pickup, or you simply want to use a vehicle you already own; you’ll appreciate the flexibility in a vehicle that a lighter travel trailer affords you.

Can You Travel Comfortably in a Lightweight Camper?

Can You Travel Comfortably in a Lightweight Camper

They sometimes say “less is more,” and we think that can definitely be the case with small travel trailers. Although they may not boast the storage capacity of other rigs, you can certainly fit all of your essentials in any one of these small campers.

What more do you need really? After all, most RVers are drawn to the lifestyle, at least in part by a desire to lead a more simplified and less stressful life. We think these compact campers encourage a back-to-the-basics camping approach that so many of us desire.

Can You Put a Bathroom in a 4000 lbs Travel Trailer?

You might be surprised to realize that almost all of the travel trailers under 4000 lbs that we’ve reviewed incorporate a bathroom. It’s true that smaller floorplans typically lend themselves to wet baths. However, finding a dry bath in even these small campers is not all that unusual.

Even if you fall in love with one of the few options on our list that are bathroom free , never fear. You can always opt to bring along a portable or composting toilet.

10 Things to Know About Owning a Small Travel Trailer

Things to Know About Owning a Small Travel Trailer

1. They’re Much Easier to Tow

Small travel trailers are easy to tow compared to other types of campers. Lightweight campers are less likely to bully a tow vehicle and push it all over the road. They are also easier to tow because a wider array of vehicles can pull them. You won’t need a huge pickup to tow a travel trailer under 4000 lbs GVWR, since many SUVs can tow this size camper.

The shorter length of small travel trailers also makes them easier to tow. You will not have to take turns as wide or find parking spaces as long as you would with a larger camper. Small travel trailers are great for those who may not have towed before.

2. Modern Layouts Make Small Campers Feel Spacious

A camper under 4000 lbs GVWR today looks very different from what a camper of the same weight would have looked like a few decades ago. Modern layouts and innovations in dual-purpose furniture and other spaces within the RV make even the smallest floorplan feel spacious.

Advancements in manufacturing and the incorporation of lighter-weight materials in the construction of today’s campers also mean that lightweight campers aren’t as small or as bare bones as they once were.

3. Storage Can Be Challenging

One thing that is hard to overcome in small travel trailers is a lack of storage. A compact floorplan inherently means less space. Moreover, dual-purpose furniture and spaces are even more prevalent in small travel trailers than in their larger counterparts.

These dual-purpose features are great because they allow RVers more luxuries in a smaller space. The disadvantage is that they tend to encroach on space that would otherwise be allocated to storage.

4. Many Small Campers Have Bathrooms AND Kitchens

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

Many small travel trailers today use modern innovation to incorporate both a bathroom and kitchen into their floorplan. Depending on the square footage, the kitchen might be in the form of an outside galley, or the bathroom might be a wet bath. Nevertheless, these small campers are more than just beds on wheels.

5. But Holding Tanks Will Be Small

Incorporating bathrooms and kitchens into compact campers come with the need for holding tanks. Water is very heavy. In fact, just ten gallons of water weigh over 80 lbs. Therefore, although you’ll find freshwater, gray water, and black water tanks on board lightweight campers, these tanks are typically small to keep GVWR low.

6. You Can Fit in Any Campground

You won’t have to worry too much about the capacity of your tanks if you plan to camp in modern campgrounds with full hookups. The good news is that these small campers fit in any campground and on almost any campsite. This means finding availability is much easier for compact campers than for larger rigs.

7. Boondocking Is Challenging but Not Impossible

Although you can camp just about anywhere with a tiny travel trailer, the smaller tank capacities do make boondock-style camping more of a challenge.

If you choose to take your under 4000 lbs GVWR travel trailer off the grid, you may want to invest in a water purification system. Boondocking can also be made easier in a small-tanked travel trailer by swapping out the traditional toilet for a composting toilet.

8. They’re More Affordable to Maintain

They're More Affordable to Maintain

Smaller campers are easier and more affordable to maintain than larger models. Lightweight campers have fewer or no slide-outs. Less moving parts means there are fewer things to break or wear out over time. Souped-up luxury travel trailers also commonly have more plumbing and more electrical to worry about than their smaller counterparts.

9. You Don’t Need a Heavy-Duty Truck

Compact travel trailers under 4000 lbs are also more affordable because they don’t require you to purchase a heavy-duty truck to pull them. Their low GVWR means that many SUVs can tow them with ease.

10. They’re Great for Beginning RVers

Small, lightweight travel trailers are great for beginning RVers. They are easier to tow and park than larger RVs and can often be towed behind a vehicle you own. Their compact size and fewer bells and whistles make them easier for a novice to maintain.

Moreover, their small size also comes with a typically smaller price tag, making them great when testing the waters on an RV lifestyle.

Is It Worth Buying a Travel Trailer Under 4000 lbs?

Is It Worth Buying a Travel Trailer Under 4000 lbs

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs are great options. Whether you’re a first-time RVer or an occasional camper, these lightweight rigs offer many of the benefits of larger trailers without nearly the investment.

You can often save money with a travel trailer under 4000 lbs by towing your lightweight travel trailer with a vehicle you own. Not only will you save on tow vehicle costs, but also fuel, maintenance, and storage costs are lower with a compact travel trailer.

By nature, these small campers can’t include all the luxuries in their larger counterparts. Full-time RVers or even dedicated weekend warriors might desire more amenities than a small travel trailer offers. Still, for many, a travel trailer under 4000 lbs will meet their needs and be well worth the investment.

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds (Light Towable Trailers)

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

If you’re in the market for a new travel trailer and know just how much your vehicle can tow you want to be sure you choose the right trailer. These trailers all have a dry weight of less than 4000 lbs .

We put together this list because its quite common for future RV owners to look for a trailer under this weight. However before we get to the list of trailers lets go over what you should be looking for in a trailer that weighs less than 4000 pounds.

Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs

Not all cars can pull just any travel trailer, but if you have an SUV or a pickup, there are some fantastic models you can purchase for your next getaway. Are you going alone, with your partner or family?

The number of people a trailer sleeps is equally important given that you want to sleep in comfort if you’re to be able to get up to other activities during the day.

Kids are quite fond of trailers with bunk beds, so if you have little ones, be sure to look out for that. You will find that the bunk beds are often in a corner to give the children some privacy and a ‘cave’ feel.

How much storage space you need

Storage is another aspect to keep in mind when searching for the perfect home away from home for you and your family.

You don’t want to be limited in what you can bring with you to make your experience special. The duration of the trip matters- how much food, clothing, utensils and other gear will be required for the journey?

The modern-day trailer maximize on space by having overhead cabinets and drawers in the kitchen area. A good design has storage space under the bed, by a door or under the dinette- companies have found some creative ways to make the most out of the space.

Master bedroom

Though the trailer is an open plant, the size of bed can make the difference between feeling at home of feeling as though you’re camping. A queen size bed (or king size, though those are rare) for a good night’s sleep in comfort helps you feel rejuvenated after a long drive or a day outdoors exploring.

Most designs have LED lighting above the bed screwed into overhead cabinets to let you do some light reading before dozing off. Some trailers come with a closet and a bedside table on each side for added luxury.

The kitchen and dining area

Standard travel trailers come with a refrigerator, a cooktop with a kitchen hood, a microwave oven and dinette that converts into a sleeping area. Standard trailers come with a two-burner cooktop.

There are some great layouts that factor in a sink cover to give you full use of a counter top when making preparations for a meal. Though not quite common, a freezer is a great addition to have if you’re taking frozen foods or even ice cream with you.

These spaces are often quite small, but considering the time you spend in them, they are a fair compromise. A standard trailer will feature a foot-flush toilet and a shower.

Larger trailers will have a mirrored medicine cabinet and a sink with storage space underneath.

If your in the market for something smaller but still want the basic necessities such as a bathroom I would recommend reading this post here.

Water storage capacity

Don’t want to worry about water and waste during the trip? See what works for you, keeping in mind that a person can use up to 1.5 gallons for a 12-minute shower from a low flow shower-head. All trailers on this list, with two ore three exceptions, have a three water talks; a fresh, black and grey water talk. The grey tank contains the water that get used in the trailer- whether cooking, washing dishes or showering, while the black tank only holds what gets flushed down the toilet.

The trailer has a frame that’s one and a half inches of box double welded aluminum that combats road vibrations. This outer shell also makes it sturdy to withstand potential pumps.

The galvanized steel roof will not leave you concerned about mildew or mold that is typical of wood or aluminum roofing. The double welded aluminum joists used for the entire flooring make for a stable floor that retains that solid feel after years of use.

To maintain an overall lightweight to structure as the whole, aluminum is used to frame the front and rear cap, the slide boxes, and the outside storage. It also keeps the style and construction consistent. When you get this trailer you know two things- you won’t feel the drag when driving and that you’ll have it with you for a long while.

Safari Condo Alto F2114 Travel Trailer

The Safari Condo Alto F2114 is lightweight and can be easily towed by small SUVs. The frame and floor are made of aluminum.

The Alto is also a green travel trailer- most parts of it are recyclable, and the lightness of weight means that the car uses less gas to tow it around. The furniture mainly consists of aluminum as well as composite materials.

This series provides trailers with a more spacious interior and more storage space than the previous F17 series by Safari Condo. It, however, maintains the large windows and the durable material the brand used for their travel trailers.

The impressive feature that those who mainly love comfort when it comes to having a good night’s sleep are the king and queen size beds that you find in the travel trailer.

The water and propane tanks are also more enormous, as is the fridge.

The latter is a six to seven cubic feet three-way fridge. The heater and water heater system is equally compelling, guaranteed to keep you warm in the chilliest of nights and still let you have a rejuvenating hot shower.

The dining area is at the front and features huge curved window.

Best Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds: Our Top Picks

Published on March 26th, 2019 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on March 19th, 2024

Lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds are easy to tow by some sport utility vehicles and most all light trucks. You won’t need a heavy duty truck to take these travel trailers out on the road. We have researched most of the popular travel trailer manufacturers to see which of their models can meet the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)  of under 4,000 lbs. Here is what we found during our research. The ones listed below are our personal favorites but many of these travel trailers have creative floor plans that meet our criteria.

Our List Of Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 LBS

Coachmen viking (17bh).

When it comes to lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds, it’s hard to beat a Coachmen Viking. These travel trailers are affordable but do not compromise or quality and comfort. Most of the Viking Ultra-Lite models come in under our 4,000 lbs threshold. Towing a Coachmen Viking is a breeze with a typical full-size SUV or light truck. Outside speakers, aluminum rims, power awning, and outside shower are just some of the features.

This ultralight camper features a Norco NXG chassis, double-steps, electric brakes, four scissor-style jacks with pads, a heavy-duty tongue jack, and either single or dual 20 lbs liquid propane tank.

The exterior also has lots of great features such as a diamond plate on the front and rear wall for added protection. An aerodynamic front profile, tinted glass safety windows, power awning, a walk-on Alpha Superflex roof, bathroom skylight, back-up camera prep just to name a few.

Inside you’ll find residential grade linoleum, dark ash cabinets, laminated countertops, 4-inch high-density cushions, 12 volts LED interior lights, stone cast sink, a 2-burner stove, powered range vent, microwave, and lots more. There are some optional packages that add more features.

The 17SBH includes bunk beds and a 54 x 74-inch bed. It has a dry bath (separate tub and toilet) and a dinette and pantry.

17SBH Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,716 lbs
  • UVW – 2,694 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 33 gallons
  • Gray Water: 25 gallons
  • Black Water: 25 gallons

The example above is just one of many that weight less than 4000. Check out their website for the latest information and specification.

Coachmen Clipper Cadet (14CR)

Like the Viking above the Coachmen Clipper is another lightweight travel trailer under 4000 lbs. Designed with fuel-efficient tow vehicles in mind the Clipper has floor plans that start at a GVWR of 3,634 lbs and go up from there, some heavier than 4,000 lbs. The floor plan selected here is the 14CR which has a GVWR of 3,803 lbs.

Being small and lightweight is not an indication that it is short on features. It too has many features like the Viking above just in a slightly smaller package. Since it has the same features as the Viking above I’m not going to repeat them, but suffice it to say both are very capable lightweights.

Clipper Cadet 14CR Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,803 lbs
  • UVW – 2,335 lbs

Venture RV Sonic Lite

Venture RV is not a name I am personally familiar with, however, my research on lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds indicates they make a very well designed camper. Venture’s parent company is K.Z inc which happens to be a subsidiary of Thor Industries. K-Z got started with truck campers back in 1972 so there is lots of experience in this company.

On the construction side of things, the Sonic Lite has several features worth noting. For example, the roof is a one-piece seamless fiberglass roof. It extends from the profile to the rear bumper. The insulation R-value is 14 which makes for a very comfortable environment in most everyday scenarios. The roof rafters are made is aluminum and there is a diamond plate protecting the aerodynamic front profile.

Like the Coachmen above this camper also has an NXG frame . you get a standard manual awning but can upgrade to a powered awning with LED lights.

The sidewalls are 5-sided ivory infused fiberglass. Not sure what makes the ivory infused so special but apparently it’s important enough to Venture RV to mention it.

On the inside, you will find a host of features such as a spacious 60″ x 75″ bed that has USB chargers, as well as storage on the headboard. You also have overhead storage and the bed platform is on hinges allowing you to store more stuff underneath the bed.

The kitchen area features a dual-burner cook-top with a range hood. You also get a full-size convection oven which is pretty nice to have. There is also a pantry for even more food storage.

The bathroom is well laid out and has plenty of space and there is a skylight above the shower.

Added bonus features include backup camera prep, marine-grade detachable power cord, cable, TV and solar prep, and the LevelMate Pro system (optional). The LevelMate Pro calculates and displays the height required to achieve a perfectly level position. There is a lot more than you can view on their website.

Venture RV Sonic Lite Specifications:

The Venture Sonic Lite comes in 7-floor plans so you are bound to find one that meets your needs. It has many of the same features as its bigger brother the Sonic but in a more compact package. The GVWR ranges from 3,500 lbs to 4,000 lbs making this ultralight travel trailer super easy to tow.

  • GVWR – 3,500 – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,210 – 2,940 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 38 gallons
  • Gray Water: 30 gallons
  • Black Water: 30 gallons

Winnebago Minnie Drop (1710)

A unique design, excellent use of interior space make the Winnebago Minnie Drop one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. You can read our review of the Minnie Drop right here.

With 4 floor plans that all have a GVWR of fewer than 4,000 lbs you are sure to find a layout that works for you and can be easily towed.

Like all Winnebago’s the Minnie Drop comes standard with lots of features. The exterior design has a nice collection of colors to please just about any RV enthusiast. The construction consists of an NGX engineered frame, aluminum floor structure, and plywood decking.

Night-shades, custom bedspread, carbon monoxide, and LP detector, as well as a 2-burner stove are included in their list of standard features.

Winnebago Minnie Drop Specification:

  • GVWR – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,760 – 3,160 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 31 gallons

Airstream Basecamp

Airstream’s entry weighing in at 3,500 lbs GVWR is the Basecamp. The Basecamp is small but it is very well-design like all the other Airstream travel trailers. It is not by any means inexpensive starting at $37,400 but it does, for some, warrant the price

A panoramic front window makes the Basecamp a cool looking travel trailer that is also extremely functional for its small size of 16-feet in length. In 2017 the Airstream Basecamp was voted RV of the year by RV Business Magazine.

There is only one-floor plan available but it is a well-laid out design that is both economical in space but very functional.

The exterior of the Basecamp is a riveted aluminum structure with a very aerodynamic shape. Tammy and I both love the panoramic window and the shape increases fuel efficiency. It also sports a rear hatch door which is usually not found on campers.

There is both an air-conditioning unit and a heating system available that are both optional. The interior decor comes in three options Red Rock, River rock, and Glacier Lake.

Two benches can easily be made into a bed, the rear hatch lets you load up your bike easily. In the kitchen, you have a two-burner stove, a sink with a tempered glass cover, a microwave, and a fridge as well. There are also two removable tables and bench storage.

A pop-up charging station in the kitchen area has two USB ports and a 110-volt outlet. On the exterior, you get a solar pre-wire kit and an outdoor shower. The outdoor shower is really a pass-through from the bathroom.

Airstream Basecamp Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,500 lbs
  • UVW – 2,585 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 22 gallons
  • Gray Water and Black Water (Combo Tank): 29 gallons

Happier Camper

If you have never looked at a Happier Camper we suggest you do. When it comes to a unique design that is both lightweight and functional we don’t think you will find one better in this weight range. The Adaptiv modular cubes allow you to design the interior of the Happier Camper just about any way you want.

The retro styling and colors make the Happier Camper stand out from the crowd. Check out the Happier Camper here .

The Happier Camper is not your typical travel trailer. As a matter of fact, I’ve not seen any other camper designed like this one. It has a retro look with very modern features. The interior comes with what they refer to as an Adaptiv modular design.

It allows you to easily and quickly configure the interior pretty much on the fly. For example, the sleeping arrangement can be configured to up to five people. Storage and counter-top option can also be arranged any way you like with the modular component cubes. An added bonus of the cubes is that some of them can double outdoor furniture.

This modular configuration is achievable due to the honeycomb fiberglass modular floor design. IT lets you insert cubes into the floor just like Lego. Pretty cool engineering.

Some of the components available include, cooler icebox, kitchenette with sink, patio table, serving bar, toilet cube and many more.

Happier Camper Specifications:

  • UVW – 1,100 lbs
  • Fresh Water: N/A
  • Gray Water: N/A

Can you tell we like Lance? Here we are again with another Lanlightweightght travel trailer. This time it’s the Lance 1475 . This is the smallest travel trailer in the Lance line-up.

Even at this small size, it has a separate shower and toilet which is something we always look for in a small travel trailer. We are not big fans of the wet bath (shower and toilet in one).

It is quickly becoming one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. Lance has added more flexibility to the floor plan with an optional sofa bed slide out feature. The construction of the Lance 1475 is aluminum-framed sidewalls, floor, and ceiling. The interior panel walls are made from Azdel , and block foam insulation.

The floor and ceiling are laminated and insulated and the roof is a one-piece crowned PVC roof. More standard features on the outside include aluminum wheel and Goodyear radial tires, double-entry step with LED step lighting, exterior wash station, LCD mount bracket, manual tongue, and manual stabilizer bars , skylight, and roof vent in the bedroom and living room area.

The interior is well-appointed too with Euro overhead cabinetry, forced air 14,300 BTU furnace, 5-cubic feet refrigerator, stainless steel 3-burner range with cover, and back-splash. The bedroom has a queen-sized bed and LED reading lights. Way to many features to list here so please visit the Lance website for more information.

Lance 1475 Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,700 lbs
  • UVW – 2,600 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 26 gallons
  • Gray Water: 26 gallons
  • Black Water: 26 gallons

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 7 (154BH)

The Jayflight SLX 7 offers plenty of room in a small travel trailer. Due to its lightweight, it is very easy to tow. This model is the bunkhouse model that sleeps 3-4 people comfortably. Not one of my favorite models but it is lightweight and affordable. The floor plan is well laid out and does have a separate toilet and shower.

This camper offers a Magnum Truss Roof System, Goodyear Tires with galvanized steel, impact-resistant wheel wells. The construction of the Jay Flight seems to be better than most of its competitors in a similar price range. For example, Jayco offers custom-manufactured frames that offer higher strength and durability according to the company.

The Magnum Roof Truss System uses screws rather than staples, they use oversize nail plates, 2 x 2 vertical wood studs, 7″ header beams. According to Jayco, their roof system can withstand 4,500 pounds which are 50% heavier than their competition. The frame is a fully-integrated A-frame, on a 3-inch cambered, steel box tube frame.

There is quite a bit of standard equipment including but not limited to, maple cabinets, pantry storage, acrylic sink, 2-burner stove, 3-cubic feet refrigerator, microwave oven, fancy-looking brushed nickel faucets, and 8,000 BTU A/C wall-mounted, high-quality vinyl flooring, premium sound system and much more.

Jayco Jayflight 154BH Specification:

  • GVWR – 3,250 lbs
  • UVW – 2,580 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 10 gallons
  • Gray Water: 19.9 gallons
  • Black Water: 19.9 gallons

Livin’ Lite Camplite (CL11FK)

Livin’ Lite makes another lightweight travel trailer that made our list. This one has a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. This floor plan is nice and offers many of the creature comforts found in the other models.

Livin’ Lite is no longer in business. You can access the owner’s forum which is still active.

Like many Livin Lite campers, this one offers a collection of very nice features. Included as standard equipment is dual-pane Euro windows, 3 interior color choices, including an all-aluminum cabinet door option. You also get solid-surface counter-tops, audio-visual package, interior speakers that are flush-mounted, a charging center with USB ports, and high-efficiency LED lights.

Appliances include 6 cubic-feet double door fridge, 2-burner stove with glass cook-top cover, 6-gallon water heater, and a 12V Vortex high-power exhaust fan.

The bathroom is outfitted with a foot-flush toilet made of porcelain, an all-aluminum shower surround, and a bathroom mirror. The bedroom offers a quilted comforter, 60 x 80 mattresses depending on the floor plan, overhead cabinets, and under-bed storage. There are several optional packages as well.

Livin Lite Camplite 11FK Specifications:

  • UVW – 2,430 lbs

K-Z RV Escape Mini

K-Z RV Escape Mini is another travel trailer with a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. The Escape Mini is affordable and lightweight but not light on style. One of the things I like about this ultralight travel trailer is its got a queen-size bed and a power awning. The Escape Mini comes in 4 different floor plans.

Additional standard features include storage above the bed which is always good to have. In the kitchen, you will find a two-burner stove, a convection microwave, seamless countertops, and a 4 cubic foot refrigerator.

In the bathroom, you have a full bath with a shower and a foot flush toilet, and a vanity with a sink. Additionally, you will find a skylight for ventilation and natural light, exterior cable prep, exterior speakers, and backup camera prep.

Commonly Used Acronyms and Definitions for Campers

The acronyms below are commonly used in the RV industry when referring to the weight of a particular camper.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or GVWR?

Gross Vehicle Weight or (GVWR) as it is commonly abbreviated is, the maximum allowed the weight of the travel trailer and all of its content. It included the weight of the travel trailer, all fluids, cargo, optional equipment, and any accessories as well.

If you would like to calculate GVWR here is an easy to use trailer GVWR calculator.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)

The typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

The amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment, and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the freshwater tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity.

Tip For Buying Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds

  • Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is the maximum weight of the vehicle and travel trailer combined.
  • Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight the rear axle can support.

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Lbs

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs are starting to get bigger than those under 3000- or 2000 lbs . They're still small enough, but with the extra weight comes that bit of extra space and of course a bit more of the home comforts.

They give you that base and allow you to get away from the grind of the city and surround yourself with nature whenever you so please.

Smaller trailers have their advantage and of course drawbacks, and this is where getting a slightly bigger travel trailer under 4000 lbs gives you other advantages.

In this article, we have reviewed some of the best travel trailers under 4000 lbs. We also look at the advantages of owning a trailer this size so you can make a more informed decision before you go shopping.

What Makes a Quality Travel Trailer Under 4000 Lbs?

When considering your buying options for travel trailer under 4000 lbs, there's many things to consider. They're bigger than the lighter trailers so you will get more luxuries, but there are aspects to consider with every trailer you go for.

Solid Construction

The materials and construction of any travel trailer are significant. Even if your vehicle is small, it must have durable, sturdy, and soundproof walls. The insulation that comes from good construction not only helps maintain the structure intact when the weather gets terrible, but also keeps you warm, dry, and free of unwanted noise.

Good Floor Plan

A well-designed floor plan is important because it adds to the weight of the travel trailer. Some people prefer to include household features like as a dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and storage in their space.

Some campers have a stove, an off-the-ground sleeping area, solar panels, entertainment equipment, and so on. All of this adds weight to the equation, so a suitable floor plan may assist you in achieving a manageable weight for your trailer while also allowing you to keep the travel trailer under 4000 lbs.

Innovative and Modular Design

With such a restricted weight capacity, storage may be difficult. If at all feasible, the floor plan and components should be modular so that it is not just breathable but also pleasant. Convertible sofa beds are an excellent example of this. This makes room for more people without taking up important space inside the camper van.

Advantages of Having a Travel Trailer That’s Under 4000 lbs

Having a travel trailer under 4000 lbs threshold can help you in many ways. Here are some of the major perks that you get to enjoy with one of these.

Cheaper Vacations

All of us love cheap vacations, don’t we? A travel trailer helps you do it with both class and comfort. Yes, the initial investment is quite big, but you get to have cheap vacations for years. There are no expensive hotel rooms involved, so you get to explore more at lesser prices.

Greater Comfort

Another advantage of these travel trailers is that they have almost all the basic amenities with a few more luxuries thrown in. From a comfortable sleeping space to a built-in dinette, there's everything you need for daily living . So, you get to stay in your comfort zone even when you are away from home.

Fuel Saving

As these travel trailers have a moderate weight, they need lesser power to tow. This puts a lesser strain on your engine, and it does not have to consume any extra fuel. This lowers the need for fuel, cutting down on costs just as gas prices are going astronomical.

In your article dated July ly 3, 2019, “8 Travel Trailer Brands to Avoid Today,” you place Forest River in the #1 position, as you state: “Until the brand manages to put a stop to the growth of negative reviews, you should exclude all of its models from your shopping list. It’s simply unwise for you to invest on Forest River RVs knowing that you likely have to deal with a plethora of frustrating troubles. So save yourself a headache and just pass over vehicles that come from the brand.”

In your July 24, 2019, article titled “5 Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds,” you rate the Forest River R-Pod in the #1 position.

This is confusing, and perhaps misleading, too; do you consider the R-Pod to be the bright light in the Forest River brand, or should we be avoiding all Forest River products – including the R-Pod series – until the company sorts out its quality issues?

I have been looking at R-Pod, and if it’s destined to be a headache in some way, shape, and form, I’ll want to avoid it. What’s your current verdict on the product?

Important Camper Weight Terms

When scouting for a travel trailer, there are some terms you may come across which may be confusing. Understanding these weight terms will make your search easier and less confusing.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) : This is the maximum weight of the vehicle or trailer when fully loaded for travel. This includes the unloaded vehicle weight, extra equipment or accessories, cargo, passengers, and liquids. The trailer and tow vehicle each have their own GVWR.

Unloaded Vehicle Weight:  This is the dry weight of the camper with no gear, no fluids, and no additional items. This is the exact structure weight before it’s prepped to hit the road.

Dry Weight: Dry Weight is like Curb Weight, except all of the camper’s consumables such as washer fluid, oil, fuel, coolant, etc. are not added to the calculation.

Cargo Carrying Capacity:  This is the highest amount of weight your cargo and gear should amount to. You can weigh your items separately before loading, to carefully keep track of your cargo’s weight.

Gross Combined Weight Rating: The GCWR is the total weight of absolutely everything. When you total the vehicle, everything inside the vehicle, the towing apparatus, the gears, and the trailer, it should be less than this number.

Final Thoughts Regarding Weights

Many times, you will see websites that publish RV weights without mentioning the type of weight or simply referring to dry weight (UVW). However, remember that when towing a camper with your truck, you must consider all weights and loads, including people. So, the Gross Weight(GVWR) is, in my experience, the only weight that matters when you are trying to understand if you can or not pull the RV. I don’t usually give much importance to dry weight, because I am looking to have my RV fully loaded.

So, the gross weight, from my point of view, is an important weight that I will consider to know if I will be able to tow the travel trailer or not. This Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) is the sum of the Dry Weight (also known as the UVW or shipped weight) and the Load Capacity weight of the camper and is called the gross weight, total weight, also known by its acronym “GVWR” weight.

Always consult the owner’s manuals of vehicles and accessories before choosing to purchase and tow an RV. Also, be fully aware of the towing capacity of your vehicle according to the configuration you are using. Towing capacity will vary depending on the load, vehicle configuration, the number of passengers, and accessories. For your safety and the safety of others on the road, check towing capacities before you hit the road and consult with professional help if necessary.

7 Best Used Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs

Used Travel Trailer Under 4000 lbs

Sharing is caring!

Thanks for your support! If you make a purchase using our links in this article, we may make a commission. And, as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. See the full disclosure here .

Travel Trailers under 4000 lbs are becoming more and more popular, especially in recent years, and throughout the pandemic. The benefit of hauling a lightweight travel trailer without the need to upgrade your towing vehicle is a huge draw. And you can save a bundle by purchasing a used travel trailer under 4000 lbs.

Of course, as popularity grows, the market becomes more and more accommodating. Now, the selection of sub-4000 RVs is huge, and it’s often difficult for first-time RVs to sift through the noise and find the perfect option for themselves and their families.

You don’t need a mil-spec G-508 to haul one of these things. Though they may be a little too much for some vehicles, mid and sub-compact vehicles such as the Jeep Cherokees, Land Rovers, the Audi Q5 and Q3, Navigators, Expeditions, and Durangos can haul them safely.

What Size Travel Trailer Is Best For Families?

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs may not be the best for some families. The best choice depends not only on family size but other accommodations you may need according to mostly personal factors. While size is not the only deciding issue, here’s a basic guideline for travel trailer size, matched with family size:

  • Campers Under 20′: 2-4 family members depending on interior setup and features
  • Mid-Size Campers: 4+ family members that usually offer more storage, carrying capacity, and options for 4 to 6 to live comfortably
  • Big Campers (Over 30′) : For large families of 4 to 6 who want to live with plenty of extra space, along with more bathrooms

You can make certain travel trailers work for your family size, regardless of the camper’s size. However, if you’re looking at something long-term, space constraints eventually take their toll.

With so many travel trailers under 4000 lbs out there, knowing you only want to look at travel trailers under 4000 lbs is only the first step. After all, some are simply better options than others.

  • Length:  21′ 8″
  • GVWR:  4,150 lbs
  • CCC:  1,015 lbs
  • Sleep:  5

Another great brand to consider when you are looking for the best travel trailers under 4,000 pounds is Jayco. This trailer is 21 feet and 6 inches in length with a width of 7 feet and 1 inch.

Furthermore, the trailer has an unloaded vehicle capacity of 2,945 pounds and a cargo-carrying capacity of 805 pounds. As a result, you should be able to bring this trailer anywhere you want, even if it is at maximum capacity.

If you have a larger family, this is a great option for you. Although it is not a large trailer, it does have a large sleeping capacity. Up to eight people can sleep here if you have younger kids.

However, if your kids are in their teenage years, you might only be able to sleep five. The reason for this is that there is a set of bunk beds that young kids can double up in. However, once they get bigger, there will not be enough space for more than one person.

The trailer also comes with a great kitchen for you to use. It has a microwave, stovetop, and pantry to store everything you need. The bathroom is also passable as it has a toilet and a tub shower.

Although the trailer is average-sized, it does not have the sleeping capacity of some of the other options. Instead, there is only room for four people to sleep.

The manufacturers sacrificed sleeping capacity to improve other aspects of the trailer. The bathroom is complete with a spacious shower, toilet, and sink. There is even a cupboard for you to store all your toiletries.

However, the kitchen is where things are really improved. It comes with a large fridge and freezer, a two-burner stovetop, and a large sink. There is also plenty of counter space for you to prepare a meal.

Additionally, the trailer has an unloaded vehicle capacity of just 3,065 pounds. So, you should not have any issues with bridges.

The trailer has fresh, grey, and black water tanks with capacities of 27, 25, and 25 gallons respectively. Since the trailer is similar in size to other trailers with larger sleeping capacities, it uses that space for other things.

Firstly, the bathroom area is much larger as it has a spacious shower, toilet, sink, and a cupboard with plenty of storage for your toiletries.

Finally, the kitchen is great as well, as it has a two-burner stovetop, a stainless steel sink, and a large refrigerator.

6. Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1700BH

Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1700BH Ext

✅ Excellent head space throughout, with a Hyberdeck composite floor beneath your feet

⛔ Dometic A/C unit is not a popular one

  • UVW:  3,597 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  375 lbs
  • Length:  21′ 4″
  • GVWR:  4,700 lbs
  • CCC:  1,103 lbs
  • Sleep:  6

As we continue to look at some of the best travel trailers under 4000 pounds, we will move on to this trailer from Keystone.

Despite the lower price you do not need to worry about a reduced size as it is 21 feet and 4 inches in length. It also has a height of 10 feet and 4 inches which should give you plenty of space to walk around without worrying about hitting your head. You also will not need to worry about exceeding weight limits as the trailer has an unloaded vehicle weight of 3,377 pounds.

As a result, you can travel in this trailer with a larger family or a group of friends. This makes the trailer a popular option among people who are planning a larger camping trip.

In the trailer, you will have access to many exciting features including the ultra-durable Whitewater continuous edge kitchen countertops. You will have residential-style furniture in the trailer to help you feel like you are at home, and there are even interior LED lights.

Additionally, the trailer has a fresh, waste, and grey water tank. They have capacities of 43, 30, and 30 gallons respectively.

7. Gulf Stream Enlighten 25BH

Gulf Stream Enlighten 25BH Ext

✅ Keystone managed to fit a full dry bath and upper/lower, full-size bunks in this model

⛔ Sink is weirdly walled off from the bathroom, but not a part of the kitchen either

  • UVW:  2,288 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  245 lbs
  • Length:  27′ 2″
  • GVWR:  4,288 lbs
  • CCC:  2,000 lbs

The final travel trailer we will be looking at is from the same company as the first, Gulf Stream. Before we get too much into detail, we should note that this trailer does slightly exceed 4,000 pounds as it weighs 4,060 pounds.

The trailer is 27 feet and 2 inches long, making it the largest of the travel trailers listed. As a result, it also has the largest sleeping capacity at seven people. So, you can travel with a large family or a medium-sized group of friends. While it might be a little heavier than you were hoping, it makes up for that in the price.

Although the trailer is filled with places for people to sleep, it does not skimp out on the important features of the trailer. The kitchen has everything you need, including a three-burner stovetop, a microwave, a stainless steel sink, a fridge, and a medium-sized pantry. You will have all the tools you need to make a meal that will make you feel like you are still at home.

Finally, the bathroom has everything you need including a tub shower. So, you can take a bath if that is what you prefer. It also has a toilet and a sink with a cupboard to store your toiletries.

What Size Truck Do You Need To Tow Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs?

Most compact trucks are capable of handling travel trailers under 4000 lbs. In fact, they will typically handle up to 5000. The Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tundra, Jeep Gladiator, and Nissan Frontier are a few examples of such.

However, some crossovers and mid-size SUVs are capable of handling sub-4000 lb travel trailers as well. The Buick Enclave, Toyota 4runner, Acura MDX, Honda Pilot, and Kia Telluride are all capable of handling up to two tons.

In short, you don’t have to have a 1/2-ton or larger to haul these lightweight, smaller travel trailers around.

What Size Trailer Requires A Brake Controller?

Most states require brake controllers on travel trailers over 4000 lbs. To be more specific, anything that weighs 3,000 lbs or more will need one according to the laws in most states.

Surge brakes are the lone exception. These brakes are built into the travel trailers and, though you can potentially modify them (such as converting them into electric brakes), you can’t replace them.

Is Buying A Used Travel Trailer Worth It?

It may sound counterintuitive, but buying used travel trailers under 4000 lbs comes with a variety of benefits. There’s always the off-hand chance you’ll end up with a dud, but that can happen with a brand-new RV as well.

RVs have a shake-down period when they’re purchased brand new. This is the period, within the warranty when you take the RV out and put it through its paces, identifying anything and everything that’s faulty with it, and using the warranty to file claims and have the issues fixed.

Buying used means avoiding the shake-down period, knowing that most of the things that needed fixing are fixed. Also, any upgrades the previous owner makes to the vehicle are now yours as well, such as upgraded solar packages, entertainment systems, exterior additions, and interior renovations or installations.

The best time to buy used is within five years of the brand-new purchase date.

Final Words About Used Travel Trailers Under 4,000 Pounds

All travel trailers have a finite life span, just like everything else on the planet. Fortunately, most of the quality RVs out there will last between 15 and 25 years. Some will last even longer.

It’s not uncommon to spot a 30+-year-old Scamp out there. The benefits of buying used often outweigh the drawbacks, especially if you stick with something within that 5-year window.

All-in-all, there’s nothing wrong with buying used, and the travel trailers under 4000 lbs listed above are all exceptional examples of travel trailers with longevity.

Just remember, preventative maintenance is the lifeblood of longevity, and it’s hard to make a mistake on purchasing anything.

12 Incredible Travel Trailers Under 4,000 Pounds

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

Traveling around with a trailer on your truck or SUV is a great way to explore new areas and make memories. However, it is important you get a travel trailer that can actually be pulled by the vehicle you already have. Here is a list of trailers that are under 4,000 pounds: dry weight.

Benefits of Lightweight Travel Trailers (under 4,000 Pounds)

So, why would you need or even want a travel trailer that is underneath 4,000 lbs?

Well, lightweight trailers are great for the owners. The lighter your trailer, the less it drags down your gas mileage. This will be able to save you some money while you are traveling, especially if you want to take a roadtrip across the country. The lower the weight, the easier it will be on your vehicle.

A 4,000 lbs trailer can be pulled by a decent sized SUV, which might not be true if you had a massive, heavy trailer.

The hitch weight will not be as much so it will be easier on the hitch of your SUV or truck. There are even some teardrop trailers that can be pulled by cars.

Trucks and SUVs with a tow capacity of at least 4,000 pounds

  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • Ford Expedition
  • Nissan Frontier
  • Dodge Durango
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee

There are some other vehicles that can do this just for the record. Also, newer vehicles are more likely to actually live up to the labeled tow capacity. To see a full database, click here .

Always double check your towing capacity before purchasing an RV. In fact, we recommend not buying one that is the maximum your vehicle can tow. Ideally, you want to stay about 80% of your tow capacity.

Forest River R-Pod Travel Trailer

Let’s start out with someone simple: The Forest River R-Pod RP-171 is a safe bet for anyone who wants something a little smaller and it just trying out travel trailers for the first time. It has all the basic needs for a travel trailer and it has a simple design.

The RP-171 trailer has a dry weight of 2,342 lbs with a hitch weight of 242 lbs. The length of this trailer is 18’ 4”. It has a queen size bed in it and the dinette as well so you should be able to fit two adults and up to two kids.

It does not have a shower either. So you’ll either have to park somewhere that has a shower or get creative. You could also forgo showering because hopefully, you’ll be out in nature. It does have a toilet so you do not have to experience anything unpleasant involving that.

This trailer is definitely more for the casual camping. With my family, I used to go camping with a lot of family friends and we would bring something similar to this. There was a showering place right in the park we were in so everything worked out fine. If you aren’t going too rural with your camping, this will work fine.

Taxa Outdoors Cricket Camp Trailer

The cricket line of trailers are very unique trailers. They are meant to be rugged and lightweight. These trailers were inspired by a NASA design. The integrated plumbing and electrical system are designed to keep you off the grid as much as you can for a few days. They hold 2 adults and 2 kids. It’s perfect for the family of four.

These trailers are not big but they hold their own. These trailers have a dry weight of 1450 lbs and a height of 15 ft. It has about 6 feet of standing room inside of the trailer. The windows are tempered and the frame is steel. It is meant to withstand the outdoors.

Built with NASA design

The Cricket Camper model has a more modern, edgy look that would probably appeal to a lot of people in our current age. This is not conventional. It does not have a shower on the inside of the camper. There is an exterior shower. So if that is not your thing, you might want a bigger trailer. This is for someone who really wants to be outside and actually is outside.

Timberleaf Teardrop Trailers

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

The Timberleaf teardrop trailer is sleek and classy. It has a modern, clean look. It is a teardrop trailer so it holds maybe 2 people to sleep on a Colorado queen mattress. You can pop open the back for a sink, a paper towel holder and couple of drawers for your toiletries.

This trailer is 15 ft in length and it comes in at a dry weight 1,400 lbs. The tongue weight for the hitch is 150 lbs. The height of the inside cabin is 36” so you’re not gonna have much room move around and chill. It’s mostly for sleeping, like I said.

The water hooks up on the side by the wheel for your sink.

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

I love this trailer. Can be pulled by a smaller SUV and you can take it out on a trip, go hiking or do any outdoor activity, and then go rest for the night. It is a nice, small headquarters to come back to and do quick essential morning things before you head out for the day and enjoy nature!

Happier Camper HC1

I think a word to describe this one would be: cute. It has that classic beach vibe, almost like a VW Van. In fact, that is exactly how I would describe this trailer. There are a ton of colors to choose from as well.

This little trailer is 13 ft from tail to tongue. The trailer is also very lightweight at 1100 lbs dry weight. The back opens really wide and there are a lot of configurations for the trailer as well. You can have one with a sink and a toilet.

You can forgo all of the bathroom things and have it completely stripped down to just hold your dirt bike or kayak. You can create one with lots of sleeping space if that is your thing.

This is the VW Van of travel trailers.

I think that this is a fun trailer. I would love this for like day trips or even trips to the beach. Because the options are so versatile, there are so many ways to enjoy this kind of trailer. If I lived closer to the beach, I would buy one and take it out with me to a rural beach area.

2019 Palomino PaloMini 177ORVBH

The Palomino PaloMini 177ORVBH is a great trailer if you need some extra storage, or you want something to haul up some outdoor toys as well. On the front of this trailer is a big, open space. It’s called a storage deck and it has ramps. It’s a 9′ by 7′ area, so there is lots of space.

The dry weight of the trailer is 3,866 lbs which is cutting it close to the 4,000 weight limit.

Now, it can weigh up to 7,000 pounds. That’s a lot, and it is way over the ideal limit for a small trailer. This trailer is great for people who like to brings lots of gear with them, and things like 4-wheelers and dirt bikes.

You should know that if you are going to bring some 4-wheelers or anything like them, it’s going to add to the weight. So this trailer can get pretty heavy, depending on how you load it.

But, if you don’t load up the storage deck with bikes and things, that weight will come down.

Inside the trailer, there is a queen size bed, overhead storage, and a good size kitchen.

In the back there is a bathroom. There’s bunkbeds in the back area of the trailer which is great for kids.

It is currently priced at $22,611. Click here to learn more.

2018 Keystone Summerland Mini 1850FL

This Keystone is remarkable. For such a small, lightweight trailer, you get so much. It can sleep 6 people, which is nice.

Before we get into to much detail, let me tell you the basics. The weight of the trailer is 3,420 lbs unloaded. You should count on adding around 1,000 lbs for your trailer, once it is fully loaded.

Once you enter into this travel trailer itself, you will see a couch that turns into a bed, and a nice sized dinette on your left.

The kitchen is a good size for the needs of the trailer.

The rear holds not only one double bed, but two. There is an over double bed, so it’s like an adult version of a bunk bed. This can make for some tight quarters but it makes it so there can be sleeping room for 6 people and enough space to move about in the kitchen area.

There is a full bathroom as well, which is a feature that not a ton of the trailers on the list have.

The total cost is $19,704 currently but this website often has deals. Click here to check it out.

2019 Vista Cruiser 17RWD

The Vista Cruiser is a great trailer for those who really need a trailer that will not weigh more than 4,000 lbs full loaded. The dry weight is 2 ,567 lbs a nd when packed to capacity is just 4,000lbs.

The door to enter is near the rear of the trailer, which is a little unique. When you enter, you will see a door at the very back the dinette. There is also some extra storage there, which is great for kitchen needs, or anything else.

The kitchen itself is a bit spread out. The layout of this trailer is a bit untraditional. Directly across from the door is the refrigerator, while the burners and the sink are on the direct right-hand side of the door when you come in.

There is also a full bathroom, which is always going to be a good thing.

The bed is in the front, and has room overhead for storage. The bed is a full size. There is only a sleep capacity for 3 people, so this smaller trailer would be good for a small, adventerous family, or a couple who wants to travel in comfort.

It’s a bit cheaper than the other trailers on this list, at around $15,000 brand new. To purchase, you can use this link here .

2019 Airstream Sport 22FB

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

The Airstream is the most desired kind of trailer. This Airstream Sport 22FB is light-weight enough to be included in this list, but it is the most expensive trailer.

The dry weight of the Sport 22FB is 3,634 lbs with a gross weight of 4,500 lbs. Though it goes a little bit over that 4,000 lbs limit, there are a lot of perks to getting this model imparticular.

This trailer sleeps 4 people. There is a kitchen with a burners, a furnace. The TV is kind of in this area too, so you can see it from the dinette. The dinning area is u-shaped and also turns into a bed.

The bed is in the front, the part near the hitch, and its a pretty good aize. It’s 54″ by 78″ so it is definitely big enough for two people. There is also a seperation curtain so there can be more privacy.

The storage for this trailer is on the outside, where there is plenty of storage.

The price to purchase this Airstream is $52,000. To purchase it, or to take a deeper look, click here.

Prices might vary on the year as well. Airstreams usually keep their value, so the prices might not drop drastically, unlike other trailers.

Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite Travel Trailer 17BHS

When looking for a lightweight trailer you often have to sacrifice the number of people that you can sleep inside the camper. The length of the trailer is 21 ft and 4 in and it comes to a weight of 3217 pounds of dry weight. The gross weight of 3,725 pounds. But you can sleep up to five people in this camper.

There is a set of bunk beds, a separate full bed, and dinette. This gives you plenty of space to sit around as you travel. The kitchen area has a two-burner stove and a single sink along with plenty of overhead storage.

The bathroom has a toilet and a thirty-six-inch tub. It has plenty of storage, especially for water capacity. Freshwater capacity is 33 gallons, grey water capacity is 25, and black water is also 25 gallons.

The fridge size is 3 cubic feet and is a two way fridge. The power awning that allows you to take the fun outdoors with you so that you are able to spend some time outside. Overall, you have plenty of possibilities but the highlight of this camper is the large amount of sleeping space.

Mantis Trek

The Mantis Trek is the perfect lightweight camper for adventures. The Mantis is a NASA inspired model that weighs 3,020 pounds and is 18 feet long. This way the trailer even when loaded, is around 4,000 pounds and its short enough that it will fit into a standard length garage as well.

The trailer is a great fit for a small family as it can sleep for people so perfect for a couple and two kids. The creator of the Mantis Trek is a former senior architect at NASA so every inch of space is well used. With this well used space the Mantis has a full-sized bed that converts in a sofa a set of bunk beds that sits at the front of the trailer.

Additionally, you get a shower, counter space, a refrigerator, and closet. This trailer is built for lightweight convenience. So whether you are storing the travel trailer, or using it on the go you have plenty of options and uses for it.

Aliner Classic Travel Trailer

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

When you are looking at small campers there is really no better place to look than the classic. The Classic Aliner has inspired many other variations but it has plenty of options itself so if your interested in this model maybe you’ll want to check out some of the more advanced models of similar creation. You can find them at Aliner’s website .

Coming in at a dry weight of 1,590 pounds, and a gross weight of 2,500 pounds. So overall a light trailer for you to cart around with a load of useful options still.

The Classic Aliner is really adaptable so you have a lot of potential options for add-ons or other advancements. Just looking at the standard model though you have a rear bed or sofa.

The kitchen is condensed into a small area with the fridge being placed underneath the stove burner and single sink combo.  Between the rear bed and front seats you can sleep 4 people total.

The Classic Aliner is really good at using outdoor space in addition to it limited space.

You have the option to get an awning to extend your camping fun to the outside the trailer as well.

The standard model comes with an outside shower, 2 burner stove, 3 slider windows, and an 11-gallon freshwater tank. There are quite a few extra options that you can get such as the alternative sofa or bed action, or stereo options.

Coachmen Viking Ultra-Lite Travel Trailer

The Viking Ultra-Lite 14R has a dry weight of 2,509 pounds and a gross weight of 3,662 pounds. It does not sleep many at only 3 people their isn’t much space for sleeping bodies.

The camper does have plenty of other options though.

For one it has a tub toilet combo in the bathroom. Which means you won’t have to worry about washing somewhere else or washing outside than this is a good option for you.

The seating doubles as storage around the dinette, so you can store whatever you want while enjoying yourself in the dinette area. There is even a wardrobe in the rear of the trailer.

There is a double burner and sink combo in the kitchen with overhead storage for storing your food supplies. The limited sleeping space in the trailer is caused by only having a sofa and the dinette area for seating and sleeping.

There is no bed option for the trailer so you’ll have to sleep on the sofa or in the dinette. Which of course limits you to three places to sleep. So avoid this trailer if your family is larger than three.

RV Weight Terms to Know

What is gross vehicle weight rating, gvwr.

GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and refers to the maximum weight allowed of both your RV and cargo. Cargo needs to include the weight of your belonging, camping gear, passengers, and anything in your tanks (fresh water tank, grey tank, black tank). I always recommend traveling with near empty, if not empty, tanks.

What is Unloaded Vehicle Weight, or UVW?

Dry weight is also referred to as UVW, which refers to the weight of the trailer or RV alone. This does not include cargo, propane tanks, or another upgraded accessories.

What it Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC)

Cargo Carrying Capacity refers to the most weight that you can pack into your RV. This includes all your personal items and any water in your tanks. The CCC is determined by subtracting the UVW from the GVWR.

What is Tongue Weight (TW)

Tongue weight or TW is the amount of weight an RV puts on the towing vehicles’s trailer ball. It is calculated by subtracting the weight of the towing vehicle from the weight of your vehicle and the trailer combined.

Do Slide-Outs Increase the Weight of an RV?

Slide-outs are great additions to an RV as they increase the amount of space or square footage inside, but they do increase the weight quite a bit. On average an RV slide-out will add an additional 800 pounds. If you have multiple slides, then this increases significantly.

Do some research before purchasing as how much your vehicle can tow, the GVWR, UVW, and CCC.

Final Thoughts

To find the best travel travel that fits your family and towing vehicle, be sure to double check all numbers and floorplans before making a decision.

Lightweight travel trailers with a bathroom 2024

Posted on Published: February 3, 2024

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

  • Looking for a lightweight travel trailer?

Lightweight travel trailers are quite popular here in Australia. We’ve had one and we loved it.

We love how we have no concerns about whether our SUV can tow it, and it adds negligible costs to our fuel consumption.

However, what our small travel trailer lacks… is a bathroom. (Yes, it’s true!)

So when it comes time for us to upgrade our small travel trailer (i.e. when we can afford it) we’ll be going with another small and light pull behind trailer.

But this time, with a bathroom.

Since I’m always looking for small RV travel trailers, I thought I’d compile a list of what I find here.

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

A note about travel trailer weights

How much do ultra light travel trailers weigh, with a bathroom, and inside kitchen, airstream basecamp 16, airstream bambi 16rb, atia rv gu147, braxton creek bushwhacker plus 15fk, casita spirit deluxe, coachmen clipper travel trailer 14cr, forest river r-pod 171 travel trailer, gulf stream ameri-lite 14re, intech sol dawn, jayco jay flight slx 154bh, kz rv sportsmen classic 130rb, lance 1475 travel trailer, nücamp tab 320s, travel lite rove lite, what is the lightest travel trailer with a bathroom.

Here’s our criteria:

Small Travel Trailer

‘Small’ is obviously a subjective term. So in regards to these small travel trailers, I’m going to be looking for anything under 20ft (6 metres, for those of us on metric)

Lightweight Travel Trailer

Did you know that small and lightweight travel trailers are sometimes called lite weight and ultralight travel trailers?

But no one has defined what makes a camper lightweight, or ultralight weight!

So I’m going with lightweight. And I’m saying that lightweight is under 4,000 pounds GVWR (approx. 1800kg)

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight of the unit when fully loaded.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight) – is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It is sometimes referred to as the Dry Weight.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity) ** – is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW.

If you’re interested, I would say that an ultra light travel trailer weighs under 3,000 pounds. (Approx 1,360kg) Totally arbitrary, but based on the few articles I’ve found online.

Sleeps two people. This can be either a double bed or two single beds.

Ideally it would be a permanent bed, not one that has to be made up from the dinette or sofa every night, but I think that might be getting a bit too fussy. These are small travel trailers we’re looking at, after all.

This can be a separate toilet and shower, or a wet bath (toilet and shower combined)

I’ve seen some lite travel trailers where the kitchen is outside, like on the teardrop campers. But I’m not looking at those, just ones where you can cook, eat, sleep and use the bathroom all inside the small travel trailer.

Please note: I’ve included the length (in feet) and maximum trailer capacity GVWR (in pounds) where it’s been available for me to see. But please don’t take this as law! Do your own research to ensure the specs given are correct.

What are the best lightweight travel trailers?

Figuring out what are the the best lightweight travel trailers is something that only YOU can determine based on what YOU want and need in a light travel trailer.

What I’ve done, is compile a list of the best light weight travel trailers that I could find online. But what is best for me, will probably be different to what is best for you.

So here we go…

We start off with a bang! At just 16’2 this great little Airstream Basecamp 16 fits beautifully into our criteria.

It’s not that classic Airstream shape that we all know so well but it’s still a stylish design and sleek aluminium finish.

They’re sturdy little campers too, perfect for those that want to hit the outdoor adventures.

But if it’s that classic Airstream shape you’re after… well you’re going to LOVE the Bambi as much as I do! With her little rounded ends, sleek silver and diminutive size, she’s a stunner.

And then when you look inside, you see a practical layout (with, I will admit, the worlds smallest bathroom :-O), tasteful decor and modern conveniences.

The Airstream Bambi comes in 16′, 19′, 20′ and 22′ lengths, so you’re spoilt for choice!

ultra light travel trailers under 4000 lbs

Atia RV produce the unique Garagable Unit (GU) which has a pop-top roof.

This style is very popular in Australia because the pop-top roof allows you to store the trailer in a garage or carport (often these are not tall enough for a full height travel trailer).

The other benefit of the pop-top roof is that there is less wind resistance when driving, so fuel economy is improved.

Yet when you get to camp, you pop up the roof and have a comfortable head height to move about in.

Atia RV have 3 campers within our criteria (less than 20ft with a bathroom), the GU147, GU167BH and the GU167FB.

Length: 15 ‘8 GVWR: 2,700 lbs

This little guy manages to fit everything into one tiny little package!

The toilet/shower combo would take some getting used to (it’s tiny, and it folds up from what is basically a box) and would not be something I’d like; but it does fulfil the criteria of having a toilet and shower, so we’re keeping it in here.

I’m sure you knew this one was going to be in this list. Am I right? These little fibreglass travel trailers are known for being small and light travel trailers.

I’m so, so, so glad to see the upgrade in the interior decor too!

https://casitatraveltrailers.com/spirit/

Length: 17ft Dry Weight: 2,480 lbs (Only the dry weight is shown on their website) Price: $26,996

Casita have a number of different layout options, some with bathrooms, some without; but all of them would fit in the ‘lightweight travel trailer’ category.

Having the dinette convert into the bed is what really gives this little trailer lots of space inside. Even though the bathroom is still tiny, at least it’s not a wet bath so the shower is seperate from the toilet.

Having everything you need in one tidy little package like the R-Pod… I would be very happy with this set up!

Another Forest River product to look at is the Flagstaff E-Pro. A bit heavier at 3,866 lbs GVWR but is still a lightweight. You can see the Flagstaff E-Pro here .

Gulf Stream call this model a super lite weight travel trailer, and compared to most travel trailers with all these features, that name kinda fits!

Here’s one that could be perfect for families. The Jayco Jay Flight SLX has a dinette that converts into a double bed, plus bunks. There’s even a small tub in the bathroom (with shower over) so little one’s can have a bath if wanted.

With a layout that is familiar across many of these small travel trailers, the KZ RV Sportsmen packs it all in. A dining area that converts to a bed, a sofa/relaxing area, and a bathroom with a seperate shower and toilet.

It’s quite refreshing to see the updated decor options on the Lance 1475 travel trailer. I’m sure there will be people who hate the new grey palette just as much as I hate the old brown palette, but I’m very glad to see some updates.

And those swivel captains chairs look for comfy!

Length: 1 9’8″ GVWR: 4,500 lbs

Now this is a tiny little number. But it’s got the shower and toilet, and the inside kitchen, so it’s on the list!

https://nucamprv.com/tab-camper/

Length: 15’3 GAWR: 2,900 lbs

I really love the Tab 400 as well (which I wrote about in a post called: Small Campers that have everything you need ) and it fits into the small and light criteria as well.

I am sorry if you’re a Scamp lover… but I think the Scamps might just be the ugliest little campers I’ve ever laid eyes on. Both inside and outside they look horrendous! (Personal opinion, of course).

BUT – I can’t help but acknowledge just how compact, functional and practical everything is.

These fibreglass trailers are just 16ft yet manage to contain everything you need. And being made of fibreglass, I’m guessing they’re insulated pretty well too.

Now that we’re at the end of this list, there’s not too much left to say about the  Rove Lite.

It has a nice modern-ish interior and everything you need.

Length: 16’6″ GVWR: 2,500 lbs

According to this list, the lightest travel trailer with a bathroom, is the Atia RV Garagable Unit. It’s a well laid out space and weight has really been kept to a minimum.

And there we have it. The best lightweight travel trailers with a bathroom, that I could find online.

Do you have others that I should add to the list? Don’t forget, they don’t have to be ultra lite travel trailers, but they should be under 4,000 lbs GVWR and less than 20ft long.

Bigfoot all-fiberglass trailers in the 17.5 foot model match this--but you don't provide any info about them.

Friday 16th of April 2021

Thanks so much for that info Tonya. :-) I've just had a look at them, and I've excluded them from this list because the GVWR is 4,3000 lbs. (I had my arbitrary limit set at 4,000 lbs) It's a great option though, so if anyone else wants to check them out, here's the website: https://www.bigfootrv.com/bigfoot_rv_travel_trailers_2500_series.html

Ah, I can still remember the joys of my first RV trip. But I can also recall the struggle of having a 3000-pound camper trailer.

I’ve learned my lesson; it is better to own an ultra lightweight travel trailer under 2000 pounds.

Here’s the catch—there are many lightweight models in the market ranging from 400 to 1,800 pounds. When you add up some stuff, you won’t even go beyond 2,000 pounds.

Don’t worry, these small trailers have the same efficiency as their larger counterparts. The main difference is the downgraded size.

Even with this humble space, you can install significant features for your road trip.

We’ve prepared recommendations and explanationsto help you find the most lightweight travel trailer that would suit your needs. In this article, you’ll discover:

Top picks of camper trailers that are a good value for the money .

How to choose models when you have a mid-sized SUV or a small car.

Can you add appliances or rooms?

How to maximize the floorplan.

What amenities to include so you won’t exceed 2000 pounds.

What Makes a Camper Trailer Ultra Lightweight?

Travel trailers are less expensive than RVing. If you have a truck or SUV, then it is easier to tow a camper trailer.

Although we’re focusing on the most lightweight units, there are still designs and features you must be aware of.

The only problem you could encounter is owning a model that does not have your necessities or won’t allow you to make adjustments.

What Should Know About the Weight

While large units weighing more than 3000-pounds tend to be bigger, they are also more likely to slow you down.

Back when I first had my RV trip, my vehicle took the tool. Now that I have a crossover vehicle, I discovered that it is best paired with a travel trailer that weighs 2,000 pounds or less.

It is easy to check the actual weight, but you must be aware that it is the unloaded or dry weight. When you add things and accessories, you can go beyond 2,000 pounds.

Typically, you’ll need to bring propane, groceries, water, air conditioner, generator, sleeping mats, and the like. Simply put, the gross weight depends on your needs.

Most of the time, a brand specifies how much added weight you can safely tow.

How Does the Floorplan Affect Weight?

The key formula is = Floorplan and Layout > Size

The floorplan could either make your trailer heavier or lighter. Hence, a well-designed floorplan is necessary.

For example, some travelers like to include household amenities such as loaded kitchens, dining area, storage, and bathrooms.

There are even models that allow users to pull out a section of the wall to create larger spaces.

Although there’s limited space, you can plan how to install a stove or an off-the-ground sleeping area.

If you have an excellent floorplan, you can even include solar panels, roof vents, WiFi booster, and an outside grill.

This is the very reason why I prefer ultra lightweight models because they keep a low profile outdoors.

With a good floorplan and manageable weight, it is easier to set up the trailer at campsites, especially as small camping grounds. At times, it’s even more convenient to set up a trailer than a tent.

This mobility gives you the freedom to pack your gears fast and then move to another location.

Convenient Towing

Although camper trailers are created to be spacious, they should be towable. It’s preferable to use a minivan or SUV for trailers weighing 2000 pounds or less.

Construction

The materials and construction add up to the unloaded weight.Even if a trailer is lightweight, it must have solid, sturdy walls.

This enables the trailer to keep intact during long hours of travel and unexpected weather change. In addition, rigid and tough walls should be capable of providing insulation from noise or cold.

Economical Features

There goes the saying that less is more. Larger trailers tend to use fuel fast, which leads to bigger operational costs. Meanwhile, small units will save you both on fuel and maintenance costs.

Compared to RVs, travel trailers are approximately 2 to 3 MPG better in terms of fuel economy.

Keep in mind that towing a loaded camping trailer diminishes the fuel efficiency of a towing vehicle by a couple of miles per gallon.

Therefore, owning a lightweight trailer means your towing vehicle won’t need 8 to 10 MPG when towing.Furthermore, a lightweight trailer means less space for an AC unit to heat or cool.

Taking Care of a Travel Trailer to Sustain Lightweight Operation

Maintaining a trailer depends on your usage. If you are a frequent traveler, do some maintenance works after each trip or at least once a month.

Here are some ways to keep your unit in good condition:

Check batteries before each trip.

Wash the trailer after each trip.

Open the vents after washing.

Drain the black and gray water waste (which comes from the sink and shower).

Drain the freshwater tank at least once a month.

Always check the tire conditions.

Buy a generator and battery charger in case of emergencies.

Install six-gallon water tanks for backup.

Keep your stuff organized.

If there are some mechanisms or parts you are unsure of, it’s better to let a professional fix it.

Make Camping Fun and Comfortable!

From solo travelers to couples and families—there’s an available ultra lightweight travel trailer! The efficiency and mobility are great investments for every wanderlust out there.

All of the lightweight trailers in this article are affordable and easier to drive and maneuver. Likewise, they require little setup time and have a better fuel economy.

The ultimate decision depends on your requirements and preferences. Yet, I can assure you that any of the models we’ve introduced would suit your needs.
