USS Kelvin Interceptor Ship

The USS Kelvin was the first ship to encounter the Narada in 2233. The ship, under the command of George Kirk , collided with Nero’s in order to allow the escape of its crew. The class lives on under the Kelvin name and because of its age, it has become a common site in contested space for many years, either refitted or in its original guise.

Prime reality [ ]

In 2233 , the Kelvin was under the command of Captain Richard Robau , while his first officer was Lieutenant George Kirk .

During his time on the Kelvin , Kirk became the youngest first officer in Starfleet history. ( SNW : " Lost in Translation ")

On stardate 2233.04, the Kelvin was on a mission 75,000 kilometers from the Federation-Klingon border . George Kirk's wife Winona was also aboard at that time, pregnant with their son , James T. Kirk . ( Star Trek ; SNW : " A Quality of Mercy ")

Sometime after the birth of his son James, George Kirk transferred to Tarsus IV . ( SNW : " A Quality of Mercy ")

Alternate reality [ ]

USS Kelvin engages the Narada

The Kelvin prepares to ram into the Narada

In 2233, the Kelvin encountered a black hole created in 2387 by the detonation of a red matter device, which subsequently spawned the alternate reality . As the Kelvin was observing the black hole, an unidentified vessel emerged from the future. It would later turn out to be the Narada , a 24th century Romulan mining vessel commanded by Captain Nero . The Kelvin was attacked, leading to a battle during which Captain Robau was murdered , having been invited to the attacking ship under the pretense of negotiating a ceasefire. His first officer, George Kirk , assumed command while Nero interrogated Robau. Almost immediately after Robau died, Nero abandoned all pretense of negotiations and attacked once more, inflicting major damage on the Kelvin .

With no chance of defeating the Narada in combat, Kirk ordered an evacuation, planning to set the autopilot to ram the Narada with the Kelvin only for the autopilot system to fail. Kirk therefore elected to stay on board, to both steer the ship and to operate its weapons in order to protect the fleeing shuttlecraft from the Narada 's torpedoes . Kirk then piloted the craft to its destruction, ramming the Narada , disabling it, and giving the crew of the Kelvin a chance to flee.

It was during the battle that George Kirk's son, James T. Kirk , was born (naming him over the communicator was one of George Kirk's final actions prior to impact). Despite the fierceness of the engagement, the evacuation effort culminated in the Kelvin being survived by over eight hundred of its crew (a clear majority) including Winona Kirk and her newborn son, but with the notable exception of Captain Robau, George Kirk, and several other crewmembers who were killed during the Narada 's attack or were unable to escape prior to the ship's fatal impact with its attacker. ( Star Trek )

USS Kelvin model

In memory of the Kelvin , Christopher Pike wrote a dissertation on the ship and the actions of its final commanding officer, George Kirk .

In 2255 , the Shipyard Bar in Riverside , Iowa on Earth featured Kelvin -shaped salt -shakers. ( Star Trek )

In 2259 , a replica of this starship was on display in the office of Admiral Alexander Marcus . The Kelvin Memorial Archive was also named for the ship. ( Star Trek Into Darkness )

By 2263 , the USS Enterprise had escape pods known as Kelvin pods attached to the bridge. These pods were also named after the ship. ( Star Trek Beyond )

Background information [ ]

A dedication plaque was made for the bridge set. However, due to camera angles and lighting conditions, it was illegible. The plaque was located adjacent to the turbolift . The Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 192) contains a graphic of this plaque, which includes the ship's commissioning stardate as 2225.5 (which translates to January 5, 2225 under the rules explained by Roberto Orci) at San Francisco , California , and the motto " All glory comes from daring to begin. " (This motto was from Eugene F. Ware, an author and politician of 19th century Kansas .) The plaque does not include the ship's class. [2] (X)

The Artisan prop and model shop of Quantum Mechanix , QMx FX Cinema Arts, was asked to illustrate the history of space flight with models for Star Trek: Into Darkness . They constructed fourteen models in total. On their website, there was a picture of the USS Kelvin model. [3]

The Kelvin breaks from convention with regards to its registry , having a zero preceding the primary three digits, whereas previous ships with a three-digit NCC registry had no preceding zero, such as the USS Grissom (NCC-638) . According to Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual , the registry NCC-514 was assigned to the Saladin -class destroyer USS Rahman ( β ).

Identifying the Kelvin [ ]

Kelvin type Iowa concept art

A concept sketch for the USS Iowa , which later became the Kelvin

The Kelvin was named after physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin as well as Harry Kelvin, the grandfather of Star Trek director and producer J.J. Abrams . [4] The registry number of the Kelvin is Harry Kelvin's birthday ( audio commentary , Star Trek  Special Edition / Three-disc Blu-ray ). Abrams frequently includes references to his grandfather in his productions.

In early stages of the film 's development, the ship was named the USS Iowa . [5] While known by this eventually unused name, the vessel was given a registry number of 1201. [6] (X) In a later interview with screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci , Kurtzman explained that the ship's initial name was to have been "our nod" to the fact that the prime universe James T. Kirk had been semi-established as having been born in Iowa. " Then we decided that was too radical, " Kurtzman said of the reference.

Furthermore, Orci explained that the writers imagined that – in the prime timeline, shortly prior to the birth of James Kirk – the Kelvin would have successfully completed the return journey to Earth, safely delivering the as-yet unborn boy, as well as his parents, to the planet, ( Star Trek Magazine  issue 146 , p. 38) though it is unclear if it would have been January 04, 2233 or a slightly later date as trauma and stress can trigger a delivery.

Robau actor Faran Tahir once made several speculations about the Kelvin , such as suggesting that – prior to its destruction in the alternate reality – it had a long history that included having been in previous battles. He reckoned, " The Kelvin is a ship that's been sent out to the uttermost reaches of the explored universe at that point [....] The Kelvin has been out there and has run the gamut of creating peaceful situations out of dangerous situations [....] I think it's a great parallel that the Kelvin is very much what Enterprise ends up being later in the story. It is a prototype and I would suggest that the events of that ship were taught as a model at the Academy. " ( Star Trek Magazine  issue 145 , p. 87)

Creating Kelvin scenes [ ]

Kelvin-Bridge

The set for the Kelvin 's bridge, during production

The opening shot of the Kelvin , a sweeping forty-second camera move, was not planned for in initial previsualization footage, created during the early stages of production by David Dozoretz and an affiliated team at Paramount . It was only once J.J. Abrams and his editors began combining live-action and previz footage that they realized they wanted the previz to be different from what had originally been planned. " They decided they wanted to tell a different story in quite a few sequences, " recalled Industrial Light & Magic animation supervisor Paul Kavanagh . ILM consequently began creating their own previz shots, including the initial view of the Kelvin , which was orchestrated by ILM during principal photography at Paramount. " J.J. wanted to create a sense of mystery in the shot, " Kavanagh explained. He ultimately thought this notion was achieved, commenting, " Each piece of the shot revealed a little bit more of the story, keeping the audience intrigued until the end, when we finally revealed this starship. " ( Cinefex , No. 118, p. 48)

Mysterious Corridor

The mysterious corridor on NCC-1701.com

Of all the shipboard scenes in the film, the ones set aboard the Kelvin were filmed first. As such, Director of Photography Dan Mindel considered the shooting of the Kelvin scenes to be a "trial run" for the upcoming filming of the Enterprise sets. " We went onto the Kelvin knowing that we were going to be blind for the first few days until we started seeing dailies from those sets, then we could take notes and add whatever we wanted to for the Enterprise , which hadn't been built yet, " Mindel remarked. " We wanted to make the Kelvin a lot darker and less welcoming and positive than the Enterprise was going to be, so everything is muted in there. " ( Star Trek Magazine  issue 146 , p. 44)

One of the viral promotion sites, at NCC-1701.com (X) , occasionally showed a picture of a mysterious corridor, supposedly on the Enterprise . It was, in fact, a corridor from the Kelvin , seen very briefly while George Kirk was in command.

Apocrypha [ ]

USS Kelvin (Year Five)

The prime reality USS Kelvin as depicted in Star Trek: Year Five #24 .

A computer-generated depiction of the Kelvin was included in the 2011 edition of the Ships of the Line calendar , in the image for February (entitled "U.S.S. Kelvin –On Patrol"). Created by Tobias Richter, this image shows the starship passing through a planetary system with its warp nacelle energized, nearest a ringed planet with two other planets nearby.

The 2012 reference book Federation: The First 150 Years describes the Kelvin as an Einstein -class starship.

According to Keenser's Story , the Kelvin made first contact with Keenser 's species, the Roylan ( β )s, in 2230 .

The 2013 virtual collectible card battle game Star Trek: Rivals has the Kelvin on card #93 "NCC-0514 USS Kelvin ".

Commanders, A shadow looms over the Alpha Quadrant. Star Trek Fleet Command best crew combinations

Star Trek Fleet Command best crew combinations

Officers belong to factions, and based on that, they share some general characteristics and abilities as follows:

  • Federation:  Officers of this faction are defense-oriented.
  • Ability : Morale
  • Klingon : Klingon Officers are mainly focused on attack.
  • Ability : Hull Breach
  • Romulan:  This faction's Officers offer utility and health growth.
  • Ability : Burning

STFC officer classes

  • Engineering

In addition, they are also members of various groups .

Like ships, their rarity varies from 'Uncommon' to 'Epic'. Based on that, they have a set number of traits that can be used on ' Away Team Assignments ':

  • Uncommon : 0

Captain's Maneuver

Captain maneuvers

Crew Synergy

Crew synergy bonus

Deploying crew members of the same group , will provide a synergy bonus to the Captain's Maneuver ability, increasing its effectiveness.

Diverse experience provides the most benefit to the Captain. Putting an officer of each class (but of the same group) on the bridge, will grant the maximum synergy bonus.

Best Crews in Star Trek Flee Command

For example, a crew that increases the mining rate of gas is great for mining gas, obviously, but it's not beneficial when it comes to battle.

Additionally, each faction complements the strengths of a certain ship type as follows:

  • Federation : Explorer
  • Klingon : Interceptor
  • Romulan : Battleship

Synergy bonus, as powerful as it is, it's not everything in some cases. There are Officers abilities that work extremely well against a certain type of enemy, or compliment another officer, regardless of their group.

So in that sense, we can't say that there's one crew that's the best at everything. For better or worst, that's not how Star Trek Fleet Command works.

Fighting Hostiles

Pike Moreau crew combination

If you have these two, even at lower levels, you are set, at least when it comes to farming hostiles. Pike and Moreau are the core, but the 3rd member of your crew can be either Chen or T'Laan depending on the enemies you are facing.

uss kelvin star trek fleet command

But of course, especially as a new player, it's more likely not to have Epic or even Rare officers. In that case, you can go with high level Cadet or Next Gen combinations.

A Next Gen crew would look something like this:

  • Joachim
  • Marla McGivers

Best mining crew combination

  • Barot

These are just some examples of great crew combinations against certain game content. Hopefully, with the information we've provided here, you can figure out on your own which of your available officers are the best for the ships that you have.

Star Trek Fleet Command: How to Get Ship Blueprints

Image of Tony Cocking

How to Get Ship Blueprints in Star Trek Fleet Command

When you’re playing a game titled Star Trek Fleet Command , it becomes quickly apparent that upgrading to bigger and better ships would very obviously be a wise investment. More ships in your fleet means more units to send out to mine for resources and engage with hostile targets. Though some ships can be unlocked through research in the R & D Department, for others, you will have to acquire ship blueprints through force. Blueprints will typically be in the possession of high-level enemies, and it will most definitely be a challenge to take them down. Here’s how to get ship blueprints in Star Trek Fleet Command .

If you are not confident about your current fleet’s combat capabilities, it may be worth focusing on improving your R & D Department first in order to bolster your fleet’s numbers.

In the Shipyard, you will be able to check a prospective ship’s details, and it will reveal whether the necessary schematics can be acquired through combat, or research.

Understanding the importance of improving your fleet’s firepower and harboring internal development is key to success in Star Trek Fleet Command. If you are able to strike a balance, the two can work in tandem, allowing you to progress much more smoothly.

Soon your fleet will strike fear across the galaxy! All will hear your name and tremble, so make sure it’s something much more intimidating than KoolDaddy232852.

Carnac's Guide to Star Trek Fleet Command

USS Discovery

Carnac | September 8, 2020 September 8, 2020 | Federation Ships , Ships

The newest ship in Star Trek Fleet Command is the Discovery. The first “prime universe” ship to enter the game, after the announcement a few weeks ago that Scopely had acquired the rights.

It’s a rare 3* explorer, and for purposes of the game, it’s a neutral ship, meaning the buffs that apply to a Federation ship won’t apply.

How Does One Get A Discovery?

Completing milestones of the Discovery BattlePass will give you get the 100 blueprints you need. You’ll need to have a  shipyard of at least level 21 to construct it.

uss kelvin star trek fleet command

Ship Ability

The USS Discovery has two ship abilities. One, it gives you a huge bonus when it comes to harvesting Mycelium, and two, rather obviously, it allows you to instantly jump around the galaxy using the power of Mycelium .

So the Discovery will have you hopping around the galaxy instantaneously.

The more you level up your Discovery, the bigger your Mycelium collection bonus will be.

The limitation is that you’ll only be able to do so if you have enough Cultivated Mycelium, and you’ll only be able to jump to systems within your warp range. The Discovery’s warp range starts out at 20, and maxes out at 30.

Mycelium Spores can be mined from 15 systems or dropped by hostiles from those systems which can then be refined from the new refinery which will create Cultivated Mycelium.

Lastly, almost off-topic, how exactly is the power of Mycelium related to the Power of Cheese ?

The USS Discovery has two kinetic weapons and one energy weapon.

Improving Your Discovery

Your Discovery will require “Spore Drive components” that will decrease the cost of Mycelium needed when instantly warping whilst also increasing the USS Discovery’s warp range. You’ll get those in the Discovery Refinery, where you’ll also be able to get Discovery recruit tokens, speed ups, and “minor commendations,” which you’ll be able to trade in at any of the faction stores for officer badges !

uss kelvin star trek fleet command

When Should I Scrap It?

Never. Don’t even think about it. You can’t. If you even think about it, I will turn the internet around right now, and just wait until your father gets home. There will be hell to pay, I tell you!

Discovery Background

uss kelvin star trek fleet command

The look of Discovery has its roots in the 1970s, and the never-produced Star Trek: Planet of the Titans (parts of which were used as a basis for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.) And these roots give the ship connections to both the Star Wars and James Bond franchises.

Please indulge me while I nerd out now, and give you the story around Planet Of the Titans.

After the cancellation of Star Trek in 1969, the series was moved to reruns . In reruns, it gained popularity, reaching more people than it had during its initial run. So there was a clamoring for a new series. First, the Animated Series came, and after that, there were several attempts at a return to live-action. First, there were some scripts thrown around for a possible TV movie, and then for a relaunch of the TV series, Star Trek Phase II . None of them were ever produced, but elements of each of them came together as Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Planet of the Titans

The first of these projects was “Planet of the Titans.” One of the story elements of that TV movie was that the Enterprise was to have been reconstructed. The men in charge of this reconstruction were two movie legends. The first was production designer Ken Adam . Adam was the production designer on Dr. No , Dr. Strangleove , Goldfinger , and You Only Live Twice . His volcano interior set for You Only Live Twice is iconic.

uss kelvin star trek fleet command

His work on Star Trek came right before his work on The Spy Who Loved Me.

From Adam, we have some basic sketches of what the redesigned Enterprise would look like.

ken adams sketch of enterprise, that later evolved into USS Discovery

The task of doing the more refined drawing, and creation of the eventual model fell to Ralph McQuarrie . So the guy who designed Darth Vader,   Chewbacca ,  R2-D2  and  C-3PO for Star Wars. And   AT-AT Walkers and Cloud City from The Empire Strikes Back

He also worked on   Close Encounters of the Third Kind   and   E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial .

And he returned to Star Trek for The Voyage Home.

So McQuarrie took Adam’s initial sketch, and fleshed it out as seen above. It was then put into a basic model…

And then Planet of the Titans was cancelled in pre-production.

The Ken Adam/Ralph McQuarrie version died with it. A new refit Enterprise would be created for Star Trek Phase II, and an evolved version of that one would appear on screens in The Motion Picture.

And that was that for the triangular hulled starship, except that…

Nothing in Star Trek ever really goes away. Ever.

You could win a lot of bar trivia nights if you knew that the original design for Discovery shows up in Star Trek III. It’s not obvious, but since the Excelsior and Spacedock took up a great deal of the budget, and the interior of Spacedock looked a little empty, the Planet of the Titans model shows up on-screen. In 1985 they didn’t have nearly as many ship models lying around as they would after The Next Generation debuted.

So as the Enterprise enters Spacedock, if you look really quickly, you can see the back of the Titans model, hiding in the background.

uss kelvin star trek fleet command

And then it showed up again in The Next Generation episode Unification I , which ironically enough, like Star Trek III, also features both Spock and Sarek. It’s at the bottom right of the screen.

The Kelvin Constitution II!

By Ambassador Kael | Wed 10 Apr 2024 09:00:00 AM PDT

In this age of universes colliding, a peek into another way events could have gone is nothing new. Starfleet generally has regulations on technology from other universes crossing into our own, but there’s a few backdoors that have been used by enterprising Starfleet Captains. The results of one such loophole bring us a ship that many never thought they’d see in action: The Constitution II, of the Kelvin Timeline. You'll have the chance to get this ship when you open an Infinity Crafting Pack or Infinity Duty Officer pack on PC from  April 11th at 8am PT to May 2nd at 12pm PT.

uss kelvin star trek fleet command

Kelvin Timeline Constitution II Intel Cruiser

This successor to the ill-fated U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701), which was lost in the Altamid nebula, was envisioned as being one of the most advanced ships in Starfleet for its time. Purpose-built for exploration of that selfsame nebula, it has been outfitted with cutting-edge navigational sensor equipment as well as impressive maneuverability for a ship of its size. Originally constructed at Yorktown Station, this ship has also been outfitted with experimental gravitational manipulation technology, and prototype defensive capabilities imagined as a direct countermeasure to the unfortunate attack that destroyed its predecessor and namesake.

This ship comes with a Commander Engineering / Intelligence Bridge Officer Seat, and a Lt. Commander Tactical / Pilot Bridge Officer Seat.

Console - Universal - Proximity-Based Anti-Opposition Emitter

This defensive countermeasure was developed in direct response to the Altamid Drone Swarm attack which destroyed the U.S.S. Enterprise within the dense nebula near Yorktown Station. The devastation caused by those unanticipated hull-to-hull contacts can now (hopefully) be remedied. This technology sets up a harmonic resonance between the interior of the ship’s deflector shields, and a polarized hull plating, allowing the ship’s phaser emitters to “bounce” energy around between them, resulting in a field of devastation that is intended to be deadly to enemy vessels caught in its emissions. Increasing the ship’s impulse speed results in a natural increase in the harmonization potential, further amplifying the phaser damage potential.

This console also provides a passive increase to Phaser Damage, Flight Speed and Turn Rate.

Starship Trait - Gravitational Nexus

Adapted from the complex gravitational technology used at Yorktown Station, this artificial nexus can generate gravitational eddies to aid in the flight of starships, projectiles, and exotic particles that are attuned to the gravitational fields being generated.

Activating any Bridge Officer Anomaly ability will simultaneously deploy an Artificial Gravitational Nexus at the location of the target. Allies within 5km of this Nexus will receive increased Flight Speed and Maneuverability, as well as Bonus Damage with Exotic Damage Abilities, and Projectile Weapons.

This buff extends to the 24 allies nearest to the Nexus in the affected area, including summoned allies, hangar pets, targetable torpedoes, and mines.

As you scan and capture particles you’ll help to train the cadet, and in exchange your faction will release a new random Duty Officer to you. The more particles you scan, the better the quality of the officer you can claim!

  • Scan a minimum of 5 traces to be rewarded a Common Duty Officer

Codes are free to use for everyone and can come with big rewards such as unlocking characters in Star Trek Fleet Command . However, in some cases, there might be requirements before you get to use them . These requirements will be listed with each code so players know when they can be used. Currently, there are three active codes, although this may change month to month.

Codes should be entered without any extra spaces with the proper capitalization. Enter the code exactly as it is represented in the table to make sure you receive the correct rewards.

To use these codes, players must have downloaded the game and completed the tutorial . Once you are able to interact with the game freely, you should be able to enter any codes that do not have level requirements. If they do, you will have to reach that level before you can use the code.

To enter the code, look to the upper right part of the screen and find the box icon with the word “claim” on it. After that, find the icon with the word “Redeem” near it to take you to the game's website , which features the game's store and news from Star Trek Fleet Command .

This is where it gets a little more complicated, as players will have to make sure the game and their registration on the website are synced . Log in or make a new account and make sure that you are also logged in within the game as well to make sure that all data is syncing between the two. Then copy one of the codes into the input field next to a yellow “Redeem” button.

Once you have entered it and clicked on the button, you should see the rewards pop, and upon relaunching your game, the rewards should show up, and you should be able to use them . If they do not appear, make sure your data is synced, that you entered the code correctly, and that you have the requirements necessary for each code. And that should give you everything you need to redeem April’s codes in Star Trek Fleet Command .
