Why whale watching in Ireland

Whale watching in Ireland isn’t just limited to Cork – in fact, there are several different places to see whales in Ireland.

Parts of West Kerry and Donegal also record plenty of whale and dolphin sightings every year and there are a couple of reasons why our island is such a popular spot for these stunning marine mammals.

1. Ireland is a whale and dolphin  sanctuary

Back in the early 1990’s, the Irish government declared the coastal waters of Ireland a whale and dolphin sanctuary (the first of its kind in Europe) and ever since then there’s been a growth in enthusiasm and respect for these stunning mammals.

2. A busy feeding ground

Why do many species of marine life call these Irish waters home for much of the year? The coastal waters off the southwest of Ireland are a large summer feeding ground for a variety of whale species.

They’re a year-round home for numerous resident dolphin species including the Harbour Porpoise and they feed in Irish waters on a mixture of small shoaling fish and can be seen just a few kilometres offshore!

Additional Informations

In the early 1990s the Irish Government declared its coastal waters a Whale & Dolphin Sanctuary (the first of its kind in Europe). The West Cork coast line is a feeding area for a number of whales and dolphins particularly between Galley Head and The Fastnet Lighthouse and to date 24 species have been recorded. From early May to late November you might see minke whales, fin whales, orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales whilst common dolphins and harbour porpoises are resident year-round. At other times you might see bottlenose dolphins, risso dolphins, killer whales (orca) and long-finned pilot whales.

Although there are  no guaranteed sightings , this area is renowned for great whale watching and we can confidently state that our success rate is 80%+. The whales are migratory, which means they spend much of the year travelling between summer feeding grounds at latitudes further north of Ireland and winter breeding grounds in tropical waters. They pass close to our coastline at certain times of the year. You’ll have a great outing on board the Wave Chieftain which is a large stable vessel with indoor and outdoor seating, a toilet on board, hot drinks, reference books, binoculars and all safety equipment under the Department of Marine licensing rules & regulations.

We aim to provide you with a memorable whale & dolphin watching trip and will give information about the species’ biology and their environment, feeding patterns but emphasise the animals’ wellbeing, protection and conservation. To do so we work to a  code of conduct  which includes keeping a minimum distance to them, slow speeds and appropriate angles to approach them, limit the time the boat is spending with the animals, and if a number of other boats approach or are in their vicinity we move away for a little while. We do not “chase” annimals as that may negatively impact on their behaviour of feeding, resting and other important activities.

  • Trips are weather dependant and subject to minimum numbers.
  • If we have to cancel a trip, you will be offered an alternative date OR a full refund.

Whale watching in Cork is a unique experience in Ireland.

Ireland as a Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary

Ireland is not only renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich history but also as a whale and dolphin sanctuary. The country’s commitment to preserving and protecting these magnificent marine creatures has earned it the designation of a sanctuary. But what exactly does it mean for Ireland to be a sanctuary?

Why Ireland is a Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary

Ireland’s clear and unpolluted waters provide a vital habitat for a wide variety of whale and dolphin species. These waters offer abundant food sources and a safe haven for these marine mammals. The sanctuary designation is not only a recognition of Ireland’s pristine marine environment but also a reflection of the country’s commitment to the conservation and welfare of its resident and visiting whale and dolphin populations.

What it Means for Ireland to be a Sanctuary

Being a sanctuary means that Ireland has implemented measures to protect whale and dolphin species and their habitats. The sanctuary status ensures that these magnificent creatures can thrive and flourish in their natural environment without human interference. It also means that responsible whale watching practices are promoted to minimize any potential negative impact on these marine mammals.

How the Sanctuary Status Affects Whale and Dolphin Populations

The sanctuary status has had a positive impact on whale and dolphin populations in Ireland. It has helped raise awareness about the importance of conservation and has inspired efforts to protect these creatures and their habitats. The designation has also led to increased research and monitoring, providing valuable insights into the behavior, distribution, and health of whale and dolphin populations. With ongoing conservation efforts and the sanctuary status, Ireland continues to be a haven for these incredible creatures.

Busy Feeding Grounds off Southwest Ireland

Whales are drawn to the coastal waters off southwest Ireland for a specific reason – the presence of busy feeding grounds. These feeding grounds provide a rich and abundant supply of food for these marine mammals, making them an ideal destination for their seasonal visits.

Why Whales Prefer Coastal Waters off Southwest Ireland

The coastal waters off southwest Ireland offer a unique combination of factors that make them attractive to whales. The area benefits from a nutrient-rich upwelling process, where cold, nutrient-dense water rises to the surface. This influx of nutrients supports a thriving ecosystem, providing ample food for whales. Additionally, the coastline’s geology creates favorable conditions for the aggregation of small fish and plankton, creating a buffet for hungry whales.

Seasonality of Feeding Grounds

The feeding grounds off southwest Ireland experience seasonal variations in the availability of food. During the summer months, the waters are abundant with krill, herring, and mackerel, attracting species such as Minke Whales and Humpback Whales. As the season progresses and autumn arrives, larger prey, such as shoals of sprat and sand eels, become more prevalent, attracting species like Fin Whales and Killer Whales. The changing availability of food sources throughout the year contributes to the diversity of whale species that can be observed in these waters.

Impact of Feeding Activity on Whale Watching

The presence of busy feeding grounds off southwest Ireland enhances the whale watching experience. Whales are more likely to be concentrated in specific areas where the food is abundant, increasing the chance of sightings. This concentration of whales creates an exciting and dynamic environment for whale watching enthusiasts, as there is a greater likelihood of observing multiple individuals or even pods of whales engaging in feeding behaviors. The feeding activity adds an extra layer of fascination and spectacle to the already breathtaking experience of observing these magnificent creatures.

No Guarantee of Whale Sightings

While whale watching in Cork offers incredible opportunities to spot these majestic creatures, it’s important to note that whale sightings cannot be guaranteed. Whales are wild animals, and their movements and behaviors can be unpredictable. Here are some factors to consider:

Why Whale Sightings Cannot be Guaranteed

Whales are migratory animals that travel long distances in search of food, mates, and suitable habitats. Their movements are influenced by a variety of factors, including food availability, ocean currents, and seasonal changes. While tour operators make every effort to locate and track whales, their presence in a specific area at a given time cannot be guaranteed.

Managing Expectations for Whale Watching Tours

Understanding that whale sightings cannot be guaranteed is essential in managing expectations for a whale watching tour. It’s important to approach the experience with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. Even if whales are not spotted, the opportunity to be out on the open water, breathing in the fresh sea air, and immersing yourself in the beauty of the surrounding environment is still a remarkable experience.

The Joy of Unpredictability in Whale Watching

While it’s natural to hope for whale sightings during a whale watching tour, there is also joy in the unpredictability of nature. The thrill of not knowing what you might encounter adds an element of adventure and excitement to the experience. Whether you witness the awe-inspiring sight of a breaching whale or simply enjoy the peacefulness of the open sea, every moment spent in nature has its own unique beauty and value.

Whale Watching Etiquette and Guidelines

Respecting marine wildlife and adhering to certain rules and guidelines is crucial to ensure a safe and ethical whale watching experience. By following these principles, you can contribute to the conservation efforts and help protect the well-being of the whales and their habitats.

Importance of Respecting Marine Wildlife

Whales are majestic, intelligent creatures that deserve our utmost respect. It is essential to remember that we are visitors in their world and should strive to minimize any disturbance or impact on their natural behavior. Respecting marine wildlife means observing and appreciating these creatures from a distance, allowing them to go about their activities without interference or stress.

Rules and Guidelines During Tours

During a whale watching tour, there are specific rules and guidelines that must be followed to ensure the safety of both humans and the whales. These guidelines are put in place by tour operators and regulatory bodies to protect both the animals and participants. Some common rules include maintaining a safe distance from the whales, minimizing noise and sudden movements, and following the instructions of the tour guide at all times. It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with these rules before embarking on a whale watching tour.

How to Make Your Whale Watching Experience Enjoyable and Ethical

To make your whale watching experience as enjoyable and ethical as possible, there are a few practices to keep in mind:

Choose Responsible Tour Operators: Opt for tour operators that prioritize the well-being of the whales and adhere to ethical guidelines. These operators often provide educational information about the whales and ensure sustainable practices are followed during tours.

Stay Alert and Respectful: Keep a lookout for the whales without disturbing their natural behavior. Avoid making loud noises or sudden movements that may startle or stress the animals. Maintain a respectful distance so as not to intrude on their space.

What a day. Micheal was super with all the local knowledge and there isn’t much he didn’t know about the wildlife in show. From Humpbacks to Dolphins. He knew them all and saw them long before any of us. Will defo be back.

It was absolutely amazing!! Mícheál is expirenced and we felt all safe with him. His knowledge is huge. It was one of our highlights in Ireland and a must do when you’re around Cork! The two hours rushed by so quickly. It’s stunning. Mícheàl did a very good job. I would go again and my friends as well.

Baltimore is only about 13 km from Skibberreen but staying in Baltimore would have the advantage of not having to worry about parking or increased traffic in the area. And you would be able to soak up the atmosphere better.

I'd stay in Baltimore if I were you.

Another vote for staying in Baltimore. It’s SO much more convenient.

If visiting Skibbereen, I highly recommend a meal at The Church Restaurant and a visit to the Skibbereen Heritage Center.

It’s about 10-15 mins depending on whether you get stuck behind a tractor or someone towing a boat.

Skibbereen is much more of a local market town, providing retail, agricultural, medical etc. services to the broader hinterland. It has enough of a tourist trade in addition to the local population to have a couple of decent restaurants.

If you are looking at other places, Ballydehob is the same distance west and is another tourist village with places to eat and drink.

The same distance to the north is Drimoleague. If you want somewhere completely non-touristy in West Cork , it’s as good as it gets. It is a bit of a walkers paradise. Being non-touristy, dining options are limited. There are Chinese, Pizza and Chipper takeaways. The only place I’d recommend for a proper meal is Willie Pa’s pub a few km outside the town.
