It's not long to wait until Wrath of the Lich King Classic, so it's time to get excited all over again for one of World of Warcraft's most beloved expansions. It's hard to believe that the original WotLK launched over 13 years ago, at the end of 2008—the expansion that essentially brought Arthas Menethil, as the Lich King, front and centre for the first time since Warcraft 3.

Like Burning Crusade Classic before it, WotLK Classic won't be exactly the same as it was back then. Much of it will remain untouched though, and the changes that are planned aren't going to alter what made the expansion great. If you're curious to know more, I'll go over everything below. Here's what we know about World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic. 

When is the pre-patch?

The Wrath of the Lich King Classic pre-patch arrives on August 30 . This includes character balancing and reworks, the inscription profession, achievements, and the "new" Death Knight class.

The roadmap for the pre-patch is as follows:

• September 6 - 13: Zombie Plague event
• September 13 - 25: Scourge Invasion
• September 26: Wrath Classic release date

Wrath of the Lich King Classic release date 

Blizzard has confirmed that Wrath of the Lich King Classic will arrive on September 26 . The beta started in June and you can opt-in via the official website .

With the new Dragonflight expansion arriving on retail WoW by the end of 2022, the Wrath Classic release date gives it some breathing space if you're hoping to check out both.

How much will it cost? 

Wrath of the Lich King Classic will be part of the monthly World of Warcraft subscription ($15/£10/€13) and includes access to WoW Classic/TBC Classic/WoW Shadowlands.

It's unclear whether you'll need to pay to clone your character (if you also want to continue playing the other Classic versions), but I'll update this guide as soon as there's more. Otherwise, you will only need to pay extra if you decide to use a level boost or transfer your existing character to another server.

What to expect from Wrath of the Lich King Classic 

The second World of Warcraft expansion is one of the most popular. Arthas Menethil's journey started back in Warcraft 3, and this expansion takes us to Northrend to essentially conclude his story and face him as the Lich King in Icecrown Citadel. This is also the expansion that introduced the popular Ulduar raid as well as the Death Knight class.

Here's a summary of what the expansion includes:

• Level cap increased to 80
• Death Knight class (starts at level 55)
• Northrend continent opens up with 11 new zones
• Several new raids including Ulduar and Icecrown Citadel
• Dual talent specialisation
• Achievements
• Inscription profession added

So, what will be different? 

Blizzard has stated that a number of quality of life changes will be added to Wrath of the Lich King Classic, that weren't there in the original. 

You can roll your first Death Knight without the need for a level 55 (or higher) character on your realm. This essentially means you can skip a huge chunk of leveling and get to Northrend much faster than you would if you were just starting your journey in Classic. This will only apply to the first one you make though—any subsequent Death Knights will require you to meet the original unlock requirements, which includes one Death Knight per realm and an existing level 55+ character on the same realm. 

Level 70 boosts will be available to buy so you can step into Azeroth and begin your journey to Northrend from launch, rather than having to grind through the previous 70 levels before you're able to hit the new stuff. Level boosts were offered for Burning Crusade Classic, too.

One of the more surprising changes is the removal of the dungeon finder tool , which was originally added in the original WotLK expansion. Many of the complaints about modern WoW is that it's lost its sense of community, and this is largely blamed on the introduction of automated group finders where there's little need to communicate with one another to get into group content.

The Barber Shop will see many improvements over the original and might even include many of the options that are available in modern WoW. And thanks to player feedback during TBC Classic, Personal Arena Rating will replace Arena Teams in WotLK. 

Wrath of the Lich King Classic will introduce 'Fresh Start' servers 

Wrath of the Lich King is one of the most fondly remembered of all World of Warcraft expansions, and Blizzard is clearly expecting a good number of players to jump into WoW Classic for the first time. But no one likes to feel that they're late to the party, so "fresh start" servers aim to let people create a new character from scratch and build a new community with like-minded players.

These new servers will come with some restrictions : 

• For at least 90 days, you will not be allowed to boost a character on Fresh Start realms.
• For at least 90 days, Fresh Start realms will not be available destinations for character transfers.
• Death Knights cannot be created on these realms without a level 55 character on that same realm.

It's important to note that the 90-day limit is the absolute minimum that Blizzard is considering lifting these restrictions. A post on the official forums reassured players that feedback would be listened to and Blizzard won't rush any decision regarding character transfers.

Additionally, all WoW Classic and Burning Crusade Classic zones and dungeons will be unlocked on these new servers, including the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj.

Wrath of the Lich King Classic phases 

We don't know what the planned schedule for the WotLK phases is, but we do know what content you can expect for each one. Here's the list: 

• Phase 1 (October 6): Naxxramas, The Eye of Eternity, The Obsidian Sanctum
• Phase 2 (TBA): Ulduar
• Phase 3 (TBA): Trial of the Crusader, Onyxia's Lair
• Phase 4 (TBA): Icecrown Citadel
• Phase 5 (TBA): The Ruby Sanctum

You'll be able to make a Death Knight during the WotLK pre-patch, too, which will give you the chance to try out the "new" hero class before arriving in Northrend for the first time.

Kirin Tor Reputation and Rewards Guide

The Kirin Tor is a Dalaran-based faction in WotLK, revolving around magic and the preserving Azeroth. Most of the Reputation with them is obtained by killing a multitude of enemies in various Dungeons with their tabard equipped.

The Kirin Tor offer a variety of powerful pre-raid items and has unique profession patterns.

The Kirin Tor is an elite faction of mages based in the floating city of Dalaran. While the Kirin Tor welcomes members of any race, they are one of the few truly neutral factions in the World of Warcraft.

Dalaran is the main hub for the Kirin Tor, located floating above Crystalsong Forest in Northrend and can be accessed either via Mage portal or by using the teleportation crystal located directly below it along the floor of Crystalsong Forest.

Currency Conversions Coming with Patch 4.4.0 on April 30

As we prepare for the release of the Cataclysm Classic pre-patch next week, we want to update you on some of the currency conversions that will take place during maintenance. Just like the original transition from Wrath of the Lich King to Cataclysm, the currency systems used for purchasing many items in Cataclysm Classic will change.

Justice Points

Emblems of Triumph and Emblems of Frost will be converted into Justice Points, and there will be a cap, as detailed below. All emblems and badges that are lesser than Frost and Triumph will be converted into gold. This includes legacy badges, such as Badges of Justice. If any of these older currencies are found on your character, they will convert into gold, and you’ll receive that gold via in-game mail.

Any bosses that you defeat that are level-appropriate to you (that previously awarded badges or emblems upon defeat) will now award Justice Points. Similarly, any items that previously cost emblems or badges of any type will now cost Justice Points.

We’re planning for these conversions to mirror those of the original Cataclysm. Outdated emblems will convert directly to gold:

• 1 Badge of Justice → 1 gold 83 silver 30 copper
• 1 Emblem of Heroism → 5 gold 50 silver
• 1 Emblem of Valor → 5 gold 50 silver
• 1 Emblem of Conquest → 5 gold 50 silver
• 1 Emblem of Triumph → 11.58 Justice Points
• 1 Emblem of Frost → 11.58 Justice Points

Please note that Justice Points will only be awarded up to the cap of 4,000 points. Any emblems of Triumph or Frost beyond that will be converted to gold at a rate of 47 silver per emblem. This differs slightly from Original Cataclysm, during which the conversion was 47 silver + 50 copper per point. There will be no “soft cap” period for Cataclysm Classic.

Arena Points

Season 8 ended last week, and Arena Points were converted to Honor Points at the usual rate (1 Arena Point = 10 Honor Points). Please note:

• Because this was the final season of the Wrath expansion, the prices of Wrath gear will not be discounted in advance of Cataclysm Classic.
• Before the Cataclysm pre-patch, Honor Points may be spent on Wrath gear. Any Wrath Honor Points that are not spent will be converted during the Cataclysm pre-patch maintenance.

PvP Currency Conversions

With the release of patch 4.4.0 on Tuesday, April 30, all Honor Points, any leftover Battleground Marks of Honor, Stone Keeper’s Shards, Venture Coins, and Spirit Shards will be converted into the new Honor Points. The new Honor Point pool will also have a cap for these conversions.

At the time of conversion to the new Honor Points, items that previously cost Honor or Arena Points will become available in-game for the new Honor Points. Gear from Wrath Classic will have its rating restrictions lifted (except for tabards). Rated Arenas and Rated Battlegrounds won’t be available again until Season 9 (shortly after the release of Cataclysm Classic), when they can be entered to win the higher-tier PvP Conquest Points.

We plan for the conversions to the new Honor Points to be similar to those of the original Cataclysm. Your new Honor Points total will be the sum of the following amounts:

• Old Honor * 0.024
• Battleground Mark of Honor * 2.976
• Wintergrasp Mark of Honor * 19.08
• Stone Keeper Shard * 1.6
• Venture Coin * 3
• Spirit Shard * 1

The new Honor Points will also have a cap of 4,000. Any excess points above 4,000 will be converted at a rate of 35 copper per Honor Point. Again, there will be no “soft cap” period for Cataclysm Classic. Please note that this gold conversion rate differs from what was announced in 2010 for Original Cataclysm (35 silver per point).

Please remember that purchasing any item with the new Honor Points and Justice Points after the patch will require that the purchaser meet the item’s minimum level requirement.

Then why did it say in the stickied end of season post arena points will not be converted until 4.4? I would have spent all my points had this been announced

sooo cringe… another direction of the classic dev team backwards like so many others when you introduced the radio silence for main expansions on classic inestad of the wanted child SoD…

Hey lets make plate users get a legendary weapon easily while the rest will eat dirt for the rest of the expansion until we say so… surely they will enjoy pvp like that…

Should this read per Point, not per emblem?

Will the elite weapons still be available in pre-patch?

Please tell us the truth. Either the plan was to have arena points converted when the pre-patch hit and you made an error, or you made an error telling us incorrect information in the April 2nd post. I am trying really hard here to give you the benefit of the doubt and avoid using terms like “lied to us,” but the communication surrounding the end of season 8 has been an absolute debacle.

If your plans deviate from what occurred in previous seasons, we deserve to have accurate information regarding your plans for arena points, and we absolutely deserve to have misstatements corrected before people lose thousands of arena points saved for the end of season.

You should not have kept us in the dark. You should not have told us after the fact what your plans were as though those plans were obvious and reasonable, when they did not comport with either your previous statements, or the way you previously handled end of season arena point behavior. Frankly, I think we deserve at least an apology and a full explanation of what went wrong and how you plan to avoid similar situations from happening in the future.

This was a failure. Please treat it as such.

So instead of converting arena points to honor in prepatch you guys jumped the gun with 0 warning and communication. I had 75k honor and 10k arena points expecting them to be converted into the new honour it at least gold.

I was right to cancel my subscription, cata will be a disaster apparently

whats going to happen with the arena points we can accrue right now with pvp dailies?

That’s gonna be a big booooooooo from me dog. All I read was “We were too lazy to let you spend your hard earned arena points and use them for two weeks so we didn’t even take the time to tell you what was going on”.

So extra Emblems of Frost convert to less gold than previous phase emblems?

That’s a big slap in the face to those who had 75k honor and arena points ready to spend.

You should add a 50%+ discount to all JP and honor gear in the pre-patch until Cata comes out.

There’s no reason to bother farming any of it at the normal costs between the 30th and the 20th. The time investment to farm full sets of gear in the pre-patch is probably longer than the time you’d be using the gear before replacing it in Cata.

best bet for maxium payout is to just convert badges over 346 to conquest since frost and tri badges only give 47s per but conq is 5g 50s

yeah but theres a vendor in the underbelly you can convert to the less tier badge

This is insane that you converted arena points without telling anyone. Awful.

The War Within: Warbands Preview

With public access to The War Within test phase just around the corner, we want to share more details about what’s in development for Warbands.

What are Warbands?

The new Warbands system being introduced in The War Within will encompass all of the characters on a player’s Battle.net account as well as the items, collections, and progression they share.

It’s important to note that your Warband is limited to characters within a single region (i.e., Americas, Europe, Korea, Taiwan) but spans every realm, faction, and even subscription you may have within that region

Many aspects of World of Warcraft have been shared across your account for a long time—essentially a Warband. This includes your collection of pets, mounts, transmogs, heirlooms, and more. With the release of Warbands, we are significantly expanding what additional aspects of the game have Warband integration. To name just a few changes:

• New reputations and Renown tracks will be Warband-wide.
• A new Warband bank will allow you to easily store and share items between your characters.
• The ability to collect most item appearances with any character in your Warband, regardless of their ability to equip the gear.

Goals of the Warband System

• Make playing alternate (alt) characters easier and more enjoyable – Data shows that many players already have an alt or two (or ten) and enjoy playing them,  so we want to make playing them even better.
• Switch between characters without falling behind – There will always be a lot of character-specific progression in World of Warcraft , such as high-end gearing, but wherever it’s appropriate, moving progression onto your Warband should allow you to freely play multiple characters without losing efficiency or long-term progress.
• Acknowledge the player behind the screen – In other words, wherever possible, we want to celebrate your accomplishments within your Warband, not only on your character, so you can carry those accomplishments with you to whichever character you choose to play.
• Clarify which aspects of the game are account-wide versus character-specific – It hasn’t always been clear which parts of the game apply to your characters versus your account. We've taken this opportunity to clarify these differences in the UI, as well as replacing the term "account" with "Warband" throughout the game.

Make an early descent into World of Warcraft®: The War Within™ . You'll journey through never-before-seen subterranean worlds filled with hidden wonders, earn the trust of the new Earthen allied race, and face an ancient evil lurking in the darkness when you sign up for the beta!

Getting Started

Join us in testing  The War Within . Players who have opted in can be selected to be testers, and invitations will go out regularly throughout the test. If selected to participate in the beta test, your Battle.net account will already be flagged for access.

• Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.
• Run the Battle.net® desktop app—it may need to update itself if you haven't run it recently. If you don't have the app installed, get started  here .
• Once Battle.net is installed and updated, select  World of Warcraft  from the list of games.
• In the Game Version drop-down menu above the Play button, choose The War Within (listed under In Development) option, then click Install.
• Allow installation to complete, click Play, and select any available Test Servers.
• Create a new test character or use the character copy to import your existing Dragonflight character.
• Enter the game and test the available content.

Set Sail for the Plunderstorm

Plunge into a challenging battle that earns excellent rewards for World of Warcraft® Modern and Classic progression realms. All you have to do is survive…and plunder. Can't seem to stay in the realm of the living? No problem. Plunderers still gain progression that helps unlock new rewards.

Each match is 10-15 minutes long and has 60 players per match, with the winner being the last one standing. Level up and acquire new abilities and spells by killing creatures and enemies, looting chests, and avoiding the encroaching storm.

Prepare to Plunder

Plunderstorm is perfect for pick-up and play! No expansion purchase is required, but a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time is needed to participate in a high-stakes, play-by-the-seat-your-pants match. This means that Classic players can also participate in a plethora of plundering fun by simply installing the modern (Live) World of Warcraft client:

• Launch the Battle.net desktop app.
• Click the World of Warcraft icon at the top. If the icon is missing, click on  All Games  and select the game from the list.
• On top of the Install button is a drop-down menu. Confirm that you wish to install World of Warcraft .
• Click Install.

Once you’re in modern WoW:

• Select Plunderstorm 2 from the World of Warcraft game menu to get into the action.
• Create a new, ready-to-play character—player characters are unique to this event. You don't need previous knowledge of races and classes to chart your course for mayhem.
• Choose between Solo or—to play with your Battle.net friends—make a group from the Plunderstorm character screen and select Duo . If queued for a Duo without a partner, you'll be automatically matched with one. You can also access chat, customize characters, and see the queue from the Character Select Screen.

So instead of season 3 voters having an advantage, they have a disadvantage. Other classes can roll with 2 separate 2-set bonuses while gearing while s3 sets will override. Not that I think you should be able to get 4 set with prior season gear, but how is this more fair than the alternative?
