Where to buy Tom Cruise's iconic aviator sunglasses from Top Gun: Maverick

By Allie Johnson

What sunglasses does Tom Cruise wear in Top Gun: Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick," Tom Cruise's fighter pilot character wears Ray-Ban Aviator Classics (model 3025), also known as the Ray-Ban original. He wears gold frames with green lenses, an iconic color combination that has become known as "Top Gun sunglasses."

History of Top Gun and Ray-Ban Aviators

Ray-Ban Aviators were created in the 1930s as pilot sunglasses to help shield aviators' eyes from the glare of the sun above the clouds. Over the years, Ray-Ban Aviators became an American icon, often spotted on celebrities from Audrey Hepburn and James Dean to Michael Jackson and Madonna.

So Ray-Ban Aviators were a natural fit for a movie about fighter pilots. In the 1986 blockbuster movie "Top Gun," Tom Cruise wore the same style of aviators that he wears in the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick." Thanks to the popularity of the original "Top Gun" movie, both sunglasses sales and interest in military aviation took off.

The movie "Top Gun" is based on the U.S. Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course, also known as TOPGUN, at the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The school opened in California in 1969 to better train fighter pilots for combat in the Vietnam War. It became famous thanks to "Top Gun," and Ray-Ban Aviators also got their moment in the sun.

Before starring in "Top Gun," Tom Cruise already had ties with Ray-Ban. He wore a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers in "Risky Business," the racy teen comedy that came out three years earlier in 1983.

In "Top Gun," Ray-Ban Aviators played a key part in Tom Cruise's style. His look was cool, tough and edgy. In addition to Cruise's Maverick, these other "Top Gun" characters also wore Ray-Ban Aviators:

Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer ( Ray-Ban Shooter 3138 )

Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards ( Ray-Ban Caravan 3136 )

Marcus "Sundown" Williams, played by Clarence Gilyard (Ray-Ban Aviator 3513)

Ron "Slider" Kerner, played by Rick Rossovich ( Ray-Ban Aviator 3025 )

Air Boss Johnson, played by Duke Stroud (Ray-Ban Outdoorsman 3030)

The original "Top Gun" movie sent sales of Ray-Ban Aviators soaring. The brand reportedly saw sales skyrocket by 40% after the movie’s release — higher than an F-14 fighter jet with Maverick in the cockpit.

Who is Tom Cruise's Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original 1986 movie "Top Gun," iconic American actor Tom Cruise plays Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. So, who is Maverick? He's a fictional lieutenant and fighter pilot at the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" school for pilots. He's brave, charismatic and cocky.

Maverick is known for doing daredevil stunts in the air, playing volleyball in his free time, and for wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses . In the 1986 movie, his wingman is Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, a fellow fighter pilot who also wears aviators .

In the new Top Gun movie, Maverick returns to the Top Gun school as a flight instructor, still sporting his iconic aviators and the same edgy style from the original "Top Gun" movie.

The importance of UV protection and quality sunglasses

Wearing quality sunglasses is just as important for you as it is for a fighter pilot.

That's because the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can hurt your eyes and the surrounding skin, possibly leading to cataracts, eye growths and skin cancer around the eyes. Wearing a pair of quality sunglasses, even on cloudy days, can help keep your eyes healthy.

Choose sunglasses that offer 100% protection from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. To cut down on glare, look for sunglasses with polarized lenses . Much like the glare pilots face while in the cockpit, glare reflected off water and other surfaces can make it hard to see clearly.

If you want prescription sunglasses , ask your optician what lenses and lens coatings will work best for your needs. No matter what sunglasses you get, make sure they will protect your eyes anytime you're in the sun, whether you're flying, driving or just lounging by the pool.

These sunnies rep a lot of what military pilots have worn for decades. Yes, they're timelessly stylish, and Ray-Ban's model comes in a couple of different sizes to flatter most face shapes. If you have an average face width then you'll be good to get the 55 mm size but if you think you'll need to size up go with the 58 mm. The difference in sizing hardly effects the weight, so whichever you go with you'll still have a pair of metal frames that are light as a feather (about 1.1 oz).

And if you're looking to upgrade your Tom-approved Ray-Bans, you can get the 3025 in a polarized version . The cost is about $50 more but if you anticipate throwing these into your daily style rotation—which is a legitimate power move—then the price bump is worth the investment.

Sometimes the best style upgrades can be found by looking at what's always worked. Grab a pair of these bad boys and officially enter your "summer cool guy" status.

How Tom Cruise and Top Gun Helped Make Ray-Ban Iconic

@tomcruise

In 2022, Top Gun: Maverick broke several  box office  records during its release and quickly became the best summer movie of the year. It grossed $248 million worldwide on its opening weekend and is still the highest-earning movie during a Memorial Day run. This comes as no shock since it saw Tom Cruise return 36 years after the first movie to reprise his role as the highly skilled fighter pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The film's success goes beyond the silver screen, as it has left its mark on pop culture in more ways than one. Case in point, Top Gun propelled eyewear brand Ray-Ban out of impending financial ruin and cemented the image of a young Tom Cruise in aviator glasses as one of cinema's most influential characters. For a more in-depth look at how Top Gun and Tom Cruise helped Ray-Ban become one of the biggest eyewear companies today, continue reading below.

Ray-Ban Aviators

@topgunmovie

Thirty years ago, Ray-Ban was far from being the successful brand we know today. The company reached its lowest point in sales in 1981. At the time, the brand was seen as outdated, as bolder oversized frames were in fashion at the time. Ray-Ban was selling only around 18,000 units per year. It was on the verge of filing for bankruptcy, almost ending a 40-year-old business. While this was happening, the first Top Gun was in development. When creating the movie, the filmmakers wanted to use a realistic approach, even going as far as letting Tom Cruise fly and film in a real fighter jet. This extended to crafting Maverick's distinct look, which is reminiscent of a young, confident pilot. Aviators were necessary for the look as these were eyewear specifically designed for flying. These  sunglasses  were made with advanced light protection to shield the eyes of American pilots in 1937 from being so close to the sun. The lenses also reduce harsh glare, helping pilots see better and enhance their performance. Its unique style has since been viewed as classic and timeless. When Top Gun first came out in 1986, the unit sales of Ray-Ban aviators increased by 40%. It hasn't been confirmed whether it was Tom Cruise's choice to go with Ray-Ban, but it is now considered one of his trademark accessories.

Tom Cruise and Ray-Ban

@topgunmovie

Many would be surprised that Top Gun wasn't the first movie where Tom Cruise donned Ray-Ban shades. In 1983, the actor wore Ray-Ban's Wayfarer frames for a sequence in Risky Business where his character dances to Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger. Throughout the years, this  iconic scene  has been recreated numerous times for movies, shows, and commercials. By 1988, Tom Cruise was so heavily associated with the brand that the director of the Oscar-winning movie Rain Man refused to let the actor wear Ray-Bans for any of his scenes. However, Tom Cruise has continued to support the brand in the years that followed. In 2013, a reporter asked Tom Cruise if the shades he wore on the red carpet of Star Trek Into Darkness were 3-D glasses for the film. The actor denied it and said, "No, man. These are Ray-Bans."

Top Gun and its lasting legacy

@topgunmovie

Over the years, many Top Gun fans have been asking for a follow-up movie due to the first film's success. In fact, the Navy's recruitment rates increased by up to 500% after it was released. The fans finally got their wish in 2022. Unsurprisingly, many of its promotional materials included distinct Ray-Ban aviators. The movie's theme song, performed by Lady Gaga, had a music video in which the singer donned the eyewear. Social media filters were also released in which audiences could wear Maverick's signature sunglasses. Sales for Ray-Ban aviators rose once again, just like they did in 1986. Just like its predecessor, the sequel was an instant success. It was nominated for six Academy Awards and won Best Sound. It was named the Best Film of the Year by film review company Rotten Tomatoes. It is currently the fifth  highest-grossing movie  of all time domestically. Top Gun: Maverick supporting actor Miles Teller confirms that discussions of a third Top Gun movie with Tom Cruise are ongoing. Should this push through, Ray-Ban can undoubtedly look forward to another lucrative boost.

Will ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Revive Our Lust for Aviator Shades?

Every element of Tom Cruise’s onscreen wardrobe was custom-made for the star, costume designer Marlene Stewart reveals—including the big screen’s coolest sunglasses.

Helen Holmes

Helen Holmes

Culture Reporter

young tom cruise glasses

Midway through Top Gun: Maverick , in homage to the original Top Gun ’s famous volleyball scene, Tom Cruise and his young acolytes frolic on the beach, playing a game of shirtless touch football. Cruise is just as bare-chested as the rest, clad only in blue jeans and his character’s distinctive, Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses. Glistening in golden hour sunlight, Cruise is resplendent.

The Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses Tom Cruise wears in Top Gun: Maverick were custom-made to suit the star’s face perfectly, a testament to the actor’s famed attention to detail.

“Tom is a stickler,” Marlene Stewart, Maverick ’s costume designer, told The Daily Beast. “We had many, many fittings for the glasses. These are classic, Aviator Ray-Bans, and what I do and what costume designers do is you work with props, who is in charge of making the glasses. Altering them, customizing them. I’m in charge of the look, which includes the glasses, but I work in tandem with props, so that when we had a fitting with Tom, we knew of course that the Aviators were going to be on board. That was never a question.

“It was really a matter of what size, and how customized was the color of the glass, and the shape. To talk about the scene on the beach, we had fittings with each character to see what’s gonna work for them, but we wanted to establish Tom’s first.”

The Aviators were established as iconic in the original Top Gun (1986). After the movie’s release, sales of Aviator sunglasses leapt by 40 percent; perhaps even more impressively, Aviators have continued to maintain double-digit growth in the following years . The film’s supporting cast members also each rock Ray-Bans that vary depending on the character, but each style works in harmony with the Aviators’ classic shape.

The sunglasses are just one sartorial echo of the original Top Gun . 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick finds Cruise reprising his now-classic 1980s role as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell; the original’s narrative is more or less adhered to—a ragtag band of hotshot pilots must work together to execute an extremely dangerous mission, led by Cruise, who’s aged into the role of teacher. The costumes have only gotten more vigilantly precise.

Cruise, his love interest, played by Jennifer Connelly, and every one of his airborne naval comrades dip in and out of frame like models in a Ralph Lauren ad; Maverick high tails it astride a motorcycle, his jacket billowing in the wind, but only so much.

As for the supporting characters, one standout is Miles Teller as the hotheaded rookie “Rooster.” Teller huffs and puffs through the film rocking a petulant mustache and a pair of Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan shades. Connelly, meanwhile sports the classic Aviators in a shade of golden brown .

The mercenary slickness of the film’s look and feel is no accident. Stewart has a long history in Hollywood; she’s got a particularly established track record when it comes to amplifying unique shades of cinematic masculinity.

One of her earliest collaborations was with Oliver Stone for the Jim Morrison biopic The Doors, and she went on to craft the terrifying T-1000’s look in Terminator 2: Judgement Day . (To my eye, there are more than a few similarities between Robert Patrick’s T-1000 and Cruise’s Maverick, even down to the two actors’ mesmerizing running styles .)

Maverick is also Stewart’s third collaboration with Tom Cruise. “Especially in Top Gun , [Cruise’s character] is very old school in a way, it’s like another period in time when people respected each other and yet they still had individuality and drive and ambition,” Stewart said.

“I had worked with Tony Scott; I did not do the first Top Gun , but I knew the people who worked on it,” Stewart said. “Back in those days, they used original pieces that were around, whether it be an original-issue flight suit or his jeans or his leather jacket.”

Cruise’s onscreen enthusiasm can border on hysterical, so it was essential that his performance in the original was helmed in by his character’s precise, utilitarian wardrobe. Mitchell appears onscreen looking every inch the US Naval Officer in his prime, clad in close-fitting flight suits, rugged bomber jackets, classic denim and, of course, instantly-iconic Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses.

For the new movie, to evoke these shades of nostalgia while ensuring that Cruise’s look was 100 percent contemporary, Stewart and her team went to extraordinary lengths to craft the perfect garments.

“We reproduced the original jacket to kind of change the shape of it, so it wasn’t really too much of that 1980s, oversized, shoulder pad look that was in the original,” Stewart said. “[Cruise’s] physical shape has changed a little bit and the times have changed a little bit. That was the biggest project on the movie. We had gathered almost 40 leather jackets from all over the world from vintage dealers that we Frankenstein-ed together. It had to have the original knit cut on the sleeves. It was maybe a five month process, the whole thing. We had to piece this whole thing together, it was like a Rubik’s Cube.”

While the other elements of Cruise’s wardrobe in the movie look perhaps more standardized and attainable, every single item was custom-made for the star from scratch, down to his white T-shirts and blue jeans, Stewart said. “I worked with a company called Vince that custom-made the jeans that had some stretch in them, that had a boot cut for his cowboy boots,” Stewart said. “We needed to have a higher rise in the back so that when he was riding the motorcycle they worked, and they made other jeans for the scene at the beach.”

“ Top Gun was my much older brother’s favorite movie growing up, so it became my favorite movie,” Yang-Yi Goh , GQ ’s Commerce Editor, said. “It’s so tight and compact, and every scene is so propulsive. When you’re a little kid, the action scenes and fighter jets are the coolest thing on earth, and it’s extremely quotable and quippy. And you have young Tom Cruise, the coolest person who ever existed, looking really cool. All these things left a deep imprint on my brain.”

Cruise’s Aviators in the Top Gun sequel function on a subconscious level: like the star wearing them, they’re a welcome reminder that despite the turmoil that currently defines American life, the classics are still firing on all cylinders. (Cruise has two indelible Ray-Ban moments. The first was Risky Business in 1983, when the actor cackled to high heaven wearing Wayfarers . Ray-Ban sold 200,000 pairs of the shades in 1982, and after the movie came out, Wayfarers sales jumped to 360,000.)

The fashions in the original Top Gun are “very classic and timeless on purpose,” Goh said. “When he’s not in a flight suit, Maverick basically just wears a tight white T-shirt and Levi’s, which is something you could have worn in 1955 or 2022 and looked perfectly normal and cool.”

“Out of all the actors that I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with many, Tom has given me 1,000 percent presence and time to do the job, and you see the results,” Stewart told The Daily Beast. “A lot of actors maybe are not so cognizant of spending that much time, but he is, and it’s really rare.”

Tom Cruise's Sunglasses: A Stylish Icon in the Movies

Tom Cruise's movies have showcased stylish sunglasses as iconic accessories. From aviators in Top Gun to bold black-framed shades in Risky Business, his characters' eyewear reflects their personalities.

After the success of Top Gun: Maverick , which came close to an Oscar, Tom Cruise recently hinted that he had considered the role of Iron Man in the past. Would he have sported a pair of equally iconic sunglasses?

Well, because in Tom Cruise's movies, sunglasses have often been the protagonists of a captivating and daring style – just like the characters he portrays. By the mid-90s, the actor became one of the most beloved and acclaimed in Hollywood, inspiring the style of generations of fans.

At TBDE, we tried to match a pair of Made in Italy sunglasses with some of the actor's most beautiful films.

Top Gun, 1986: aviator sunglasses that make you fly

To convince Tom Cruise to film Top Gun in '86, the actor was taken on a plane with the Blue Angels Navy, who made him experience rolls and spins. It seems that he quickly got into the role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a highly skilled pilot with an indomitable character. Leather jackets, bombers, t-shirts, and jeans dominate here. Aviator-style sunglasses found their success. We have reinterpreted them in a contemporary way, with bio-based materials handcrafted by artisans: they are our Piquet sunglasses .

Reckless sunglasses from Knight and Day

"Nothing ever happens by chance": Roy is the protagonist of the film Knight and Day (2010). Given his roles in numerous action movies, it's no coincidence that Tom Cruise plays an FBI agent, handsome and disruptive, with an equally unusual outfit for chases and acrobatics: jeans, a denim shirt, and white t-shirt. You'll remember his reckless ride on a Ducati Hypermotard, with the character played by Cameron Diaz in tow. What kind of sunglasses does Tom Cruise wear here? A pair that reminds us a lot of our Panama Eco Black with bottle green lenses , with an elegant combination of a black frame and dark green lenses.

"Edgy" 80s-style sunglasses

Let's go back in time to 1983 when a younger Tom Cruise was at the beginning of his career. Risky Business is a sharp and satirical comedy, the film that marks the actor's first leading role. Among the various personalities who auditioned for the precious part, figures like Michael J. Fox, Tom Hanks, and Nicolas Cage stood out. However, the final selection fell on the young and promising Tom Cruise, who was twenty years old at the time. Joel (Tom Cruise) strips off his high school clothes, wearing jeans, a black t-shirt, a jacket, and slightly squared black-framed sunglasses. The bold aesthetics reminded us of our Denim Eco Black sunglasses , unisex and 100% sustainable.

Nostalgic sunglasses

Tom Cruise's latest movie was a great comeback, a return without borders between yesterday and today. In Top Gun: Maverick (2022), time doesn't seem to have passed, with leather jackets and patched bombers. After 36 years since the first film, sunglasses are also a certainty. In fact, they are perhaps even expected as guest stars, along with those everlasting 80s garments.

You don't need to race around on a Kawasaki GPZ 900R like Maverick, if you love aviator sunglasses, you might like our Panama Collection , bio-based and with an incredibly lightweight acetate frame.

The Many Shades of Tom Cruise: Sunnies Were Made For This Guy

  • Jun 13, 2012

I’m A Star, Baby

Glamorous Gucci’s, all black with large lenses and thick sides, just seem to scream “I’m a movie star!” You are, Tom, you are. These are fabulous for facing the paparazzi when getting in and out of matching black limos because they don’t show the angry eyes! Oh wait, that would be Sean Penn, not Tom Cruise.

It’s Something Persol

Hip To Be Square

Even in big, boxy, black shades, Cruise is still beautiful. Of course, these square sunnies aren’t just any glasses, but stylish Ray Ban’s with polarized lenses and a double metal crossbar accent. These are squares with flair to be sure!

What Goes Around

Never one to shy away from different shaped shades (a good thing when you have a face that can wear anything!), Cruise even wears rounder lenses on occasion. He’s been seen rockin’ some sweetly round-edged Persols. The black square style of classic summer eyewear really suits Tom Cruise. He goes for Gucci in the dark, iconic sunglasses shape popular with men and women. Tom looks sophisticated and sporty all at once in these shades. And as an interesting change from his typical black lenses and cool toned metals, Tom is striking in Ray Ban’s warm-toned version of aviators. The metal trim of these classics is all gold and the lenses are a greenish gray color. Hot!

Bare Essentials

In Mission Impossible, Cruise wore a few different, ultra-small, ultra-sporty Oakleys. Those black, tiny Oakley Eye Jacket sunglasses covered only Tom’s eyeballs, yet he looked fabulous. Once again, Tom Cruise helped fuel an summer eyewear craze. Guys were wearing these shades all over the place after the movie came out.

Living Large

Really proving that he can carry off any shape and size of sunnies, Cruise just rocks the goggle-like, Dior 0087/5 shades. These huge, rimless sunglasses are all fashionably black with a thick metal top crossbar for glamor. He looked so incredibly amazing that he probably got anything he wanted when he wore these babies!

Justin Case

Just in case his eyewear seems to be even remotely predictable, Tom seems to really switch things up every once in a while. A case in point is the Justin designer shades that Tom’s been seen wearing. These are gold-toned, metal trimmed lenses of a unique kind of tilted rectangular shape by designer Loree Rodkin. They’re inspired by aviators, yet don’t have the low-dipping lenses. As usual, Tom Cruise can carry these more unusual shades off, no problem. We wonder what kind of sunglasses style he’ll choose for fun next. Bring it on, Tom!

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest Mission: Impossible Stunt Yet

By Max Berlinger

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

Skydiving. Motorcycle jumps. Cliff jumping. It’s not a Mission: Impossible movie if Tom Cruise isn’t doing some crazy-ass stunts, and *Dead Reckoning Part 1—*the latest in the franchise, out this week—doesn't hold back in that regard (seriously, this BTS featurette is wild ). It also isn’t a Mission: Impossible if Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is doing said stunts while looking like a total badass (which the actor somehow pulls off at the age of 61, bless).

With a reported $291 million budget, you better believe that every damn detail is considered, and that ranges from meticulously training Cruise on how to jump out of a plane to the very glasses that sit on his face. For the latter, they didn’t just go out and buy some shades at the local gas station—no, they leveraged the help of Oakley, who has been making performance-minded eyewear since 1975.

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

The end result is surprisingly low-key—a pair of goggles that are so clear and minimal, they’re practically invisible. And yet, so much thought and effort went into making them so. “Without a doubt safety and performance are first,” says Nick Garfias, Oakley’s VP of Design who spearheaded the project. “Then making sure that we designed a goggle that was not going to disrupt his image. This meant a very thin seamless frame, lightweight looking and lightweight feeling.”

Cruise worked with Oakley on past Mission: Impossible films—including the very sick Romeo shades from M:I-2 —so the relationship was already in place. Garfias noted that the movie’s prop master, David Cheesman (whom Garfias calls his “partner in crime”), and Oakley’s own in-house film and TV placement team were key to making this impossible made-to-measure pair, well, possible. After all, they weren’t merely requesting some existing styles but a bespoke frame that could handle some very specific, very high-stakes challenges.

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

“[We knew] Ethan was going to perform an amazing stunt combination of motorcycle riding and skydiving,” Garfias says. “I believe the ask was pretty straightforward: we had to ensure that this piece of eyewear was going to perform both on a motorcycle as well as the jump and the freefall while skydiving—and of course he had to look good doing it.”

This process started during the pandemic, so the process included the requisite Zoom calls and a full head scan of Cruise to ensure a perfect fit. A key aspect, says Cheesman was Oakley’s 3D printing capabilities, which allowed them to quickly craft mock-ups that were then sent to Cruise and Cheesman for trial—shipped out to the various corners of the world in which they were filming. “We did many iterations because we really needed to make sure that there weren't any unforeseen hiccups,” Garfias said. “We sent multiple versions per week with slight changes to each. Everything was cataloged by serial number so that we could reference the inputs we were receiving from David. We had to make sure that we never compromised optics, fit, fogging, and retention at all times. The only template that we used was the user insights—all from Cruise.” After all you do not, one assumes, want to be the person responsible for ruining Tom’s perfect take (or, worse, ending his life).

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

It all worked out in the end, of course, and we have a series of white-knuckle action sequences to prove it. While Garfias wasn’t given a special preview, he did say he got to meet Cruise, which was a real highlight. “So much intensity and charisma, but this is what we were used to,” he says. “It's like talking to an athlete. He knew exactly what he wanted, what he didn’t want and why. He really leaned on us for the innovation and creativity while maintaining a great piece of performance that he can rely on in the most tense moments in the filming.”

As for what Oakley has coming up, Garfias hints that a consumer-ready version may hit stores—and that another custom pair is on the way for next year's Dead Reckoning Part 2 .

“Wait to see what we have prepared with Tom on MI8,” Garfias says.

Correction : 7/17: The original article misspelt the name of Oakley's Nick Garfias and incorrectly identified the film's prop master.

His choice of the Ray-Ban RB3025 gold model became an instantaneous fashion trend that still persists today and still makes waves through both movie business and fashion industry. This blog post delves deeper into their long history, along with their impact in cinematic and fashion circles alike.

Tom Cruise famously played Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, an accomplished and fierce fighter pilot with a rebellious streak in "Top Gun." Maverick became iconic for both his daring flying skills and charismatic style; particularly his iconic Ray-Ban sunglasses that epitomized Maverick's confident yet distant persona - these shades became one of his trademark features.

Ray-Ban RB3025 gold aviators became an extension of Maverick's character and an expression of his rebellious sophistication. Their gold frame added extra appeal, while the green large, tinted lenses helped create an air of mystery around him - truly making these glasses unique.

Ray-Ban sunglasses date back to 1937. Initially designed as aids for fighter pilots during World War II, these shades now serve as an elegant nod to aviation history by being chosen for use on "Maverick." Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Sunglasses – Tom Cruise

We’re an affiliate As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you whatsoever.

The trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One just dropped and Tom Cruise is running away at top speed from things blowing up again. Hey, it’s what he does. Mission: Impossible 7 is not due out until 2023, but we’re keeping a close eye on the sunglasses featured throughout the newest Tom Cruise action adventure.

It’s early days so we’re still investigating but looking at the trailer frame by frame, there are a few Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Sunglasses to look out for. It’s always fun to look out for Tom Cruise Sunglasses in general, the man has good taste in eyewear and when he needs something more technical he goes for it too.

As seen in the image above, there is a very brief glimpse of Tom Cruise wearing Aviator-style sunglasses in the trailer for Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning . Tom Cruise was of course recently seen wearing Ray-Ban Aviator RB3025 sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick , though the sunglasses seen here in Mission: Impossible 7 have a more rounded shape and a different bridge style.

Tom Cruise wears Cartier Aviator Style Sunglasses in Mission: Impossible 7

Tom Cruise is known to be a fan of Randolph Sunglasses , so we initially wondered if he could have gotten a pair of Randolphs into the film, though after careful research we have been able to identify the sunglasses in Mission: Impossible 7 as Cartier .

Tom Cruise wearing Santos De Cartier Sunglasses - CT0038S - On set of Mission Impossible 7

Tom Cruise was seen on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 wearing these sunglasses, which appear to be the same ones featured in the Dead Reckoning movie trailer. On closer inspection, the branding in the top corner of the right lens is clearly the Cartier logo.

The sunglasses worn by Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning are Santos De Cartier Sunglasses – model number CT0038S 016 . These high-end Aviator style sunglasses are gold rimmed and blue with gold mirror lenses. They also include a removable black calfskin leather sweatband on the temples.

These stunning Cartier sunglasses are finished with an identifiable Santos screw decor on the bridge and temples. These really are the sunglasses of choice for the rich and famous. If you’re looking to add these to your collection you may not get much change from $1,000 or £700.

Santos De Cartier Sunglasses - CT0038S 016

You may need to shop around for these Cartier sunglasses as Mission: Impossible 7 was in production during the pandemic and these may be hard to find by the time the film is released in 2023. We found them on Pret A Voir at the time of writing.

Get the Look on a Budget

Alternatively, if you want to get a similar look for a much cheaper price, we’d suggest going for a pair of Tom Cruise Top Gun sunglasses – the old faithful Ray-Ban Aviator RB3025 sunglasses are easily available on Amazon and you’ll save yourself hundreds!

Tom Cruise Wearing Goggles in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One - Tom Cruise wearing Goggles

Tom Cruise is seen several times throughout the trailer wearing what could be tactical goggles. The first two images here appear to be the same goggles with clear, or lightly tinted lenses. Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt is seen wearing these goggles in a desert environment where they would be essential to protecting the eyes from dust and debris.

The third image here looks like it could be a different pair of goggles altogether or maybe even oversized tactical sunglasses, but it’s pretty hard to see any details from the short clip in the trailer below .

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One - Tactical Goggles

In the 4th image above, Tom Cruise is seen performing an impressive-looking stunt riding a motorcycle off a cliff and freefalling while wearing a pair of white goggles with clear lenses. Perfect for skydiving no doubt. Check out this incredible footage of the stunt filming process.

Although no branding can be seen in any of these images it has been confirmed in a GQ interview that the goggles used in the amazing motorcycle base jump are a custom-designed pair of Oakley ECLP23 goggles created in direct collaboration with Tom Cruise specifically for the movie.

young tom cruise glasses

Sadly these Oakley goggles are not currently available for sale but watch this space. Apparently, it is confirmed that there will also be another awesome Oakley X Tom Cruise collaboration in the next movie – Dead Reckoning Part 2 (M:I8), so we are pretty excited to see what they come up with there too.

In the meantime, you might enjoy checking out Angelina Jolie’s ESS Goggles in our post on Those Who Wish Me Dead .

More Mission: Impossible Sunglasses

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One - Round Sunglasses

Tom Cruise isn’t the only one who gets to wear sunglasses in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning . While it’s likely that more characters will be seen in a cool pair of shades, these sunglasses worn by Marcello Walton are probably the most striking image from the trailer.

We’re still looking to confirm exactly what sunglasses Marcello Walton is wearing, but they could easily be described as rounded Steampunk-style sunglasses . These even have soft side shields at the temples – popular with Steampunk styles or sometimes seen on sunglasses used in high altitudes, such as mountain locations.

young tom cruise glasses

These Side-Shield Sunglasses by Curry & Paxton are a very close match, so if you’re just looking for the style, these could be a good option. Or, you could find a good budget alternative on Amazon here .

Esai Morales Mission: Impossible Sunglasses

Esai Morales plays Gabriel in Mission: Impossible 7. We don’t have an image as yet, but it appears that he wears Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator sunglasses during the airport scene. These are easily available on Amazon here .

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Sunglasses in the Trailer

You can see some of these sunglasses in the awesome-looking trailer here.

We’ll update this post as we find out more about any other sunglasses featured in the new M:I 7 movie. Meanwhile, if you’re a Tom Cruise fan (who isn’t), don’t forget to check out his classic Aviator sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick .

In the 1983 classic film Risky Business, Tom Cruise plays a high school student who starts a prostitution business to pay for his college tuition. And while his character isn't exactly a role model, there's no denying that he had some great style. One of the most iconic looks from the movie is when Cruise is seen wearing a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers. There are many iterations of the Wayfarer but the one sported by Cruise is the true O.G. In Mission Impossible II, Tom Cruise's character Ethan Hunt can be seen wearing a pair of Oakley Romeo sunglasses. These stylish shades help to protect his eyes from the bright sun while he is out on missions. Originally called the "Oscar" it was the world's first 3d sculpted full metal sunglasses frame. It's unique style and shape offered a glimpse into a futuristic-inspired era of eyewear prevalent in fashion as a whole during the turn of the Millenium.

However, styling aside the frame being made from metal created stress points on the lenses, causing them to fracture and splinter. The frame was also criticised for being too large for the average head and too heavy for prolonged wear.

It was discontinued in 2004 and replaced with the Romeo 2 and now launched their Muzm Series Romeo in 2021 which is the 3d printed version of the iconic design.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol also sees Tom Cruise sporting an old favourite Persol once again. In the classic Havana colourway, it’s a more rectangular shape compared with the normal aviator style we're used to seeing Cruise wear. This shape seems to suit him better and with the addition of the tortoise print, it's a more sophisticated look for the action star.

Tom Cruise American Made wearing Randolph aviators

Playing yet another pilot requires yet another aviator for the lead sunglasses role. This time it's that of Randolph Engineering. A hot favourite from the likes of Johnny Depp who has been wearing them both on and off screen.

Randolph engineering sunglasses are some of the most popular on the US market. The company has been around for over 40 years and is known for their high-quality products. They offer a wide variety of styles and colours to choose from, so you can find the perfect pair to match your personal style. Whether you're looking for a classic aviator or a more modern style, Randolph has you covered.

Randolph Aviator Military Special Edition

A telltale sign of Randolph aviators over others is the signature straight temple arm. Without the usual temple drop; this allows for easy on-off whilst wearing a helmet. And with Randolph's affiliation with the US military, it's easy to see why that would be a requirement. These frames rely on a wraparound temple arm to help the frame grip onto the sides of your head to ensure they don't fall off.

The specific frame worn by Cruise in the film is the Aviator special military edition, with a starting price of $330 and a range of 3 different size to ensure optimal fit.
