Are you a fan of history? The Ybor City Mafia walking tour will provide plenty of insight on the growth of Tampa from a little cigar town called Ybor. It highlights the growth, expansion, historical markers and people. Only about an hour and a half, the leisurely stroll past old cigar factories, gambling establishments and bar/restaurants is well worth it. The mafia had a hold on this little town for most of the 19th and 20th centuries. The tour included stops where many mobster "hits" occurred and houses where Ybor Mafiosi lived. Worth the time and money. Our 13-year experienced tour guide, Scott Deitche, related stories from mobster affiliates he actually had the opportunity to interview for his book, Cigar City Mafia.

ybor city mafia tour

Fantastic tour with a very knowledgeable Scott Deithce. Scott is the author of Cigar City Mafia & The Silent Don both books about the mafia in the Tampa Bay Area, mainly in Ybor City. He is so knowledgeable about the Tampa mafia and the beautiful historical buildings in Ybor. Being born and raised in Tampa, I know a lot of the families he mentioned and my family from Santo Stefano Quisquina Sicily was born and raised in Ybor City. The happy hour mafia walking tour was fun and a great walk through Ybor City. Thank you Scott, my girlfriends and I had a wonderful time. I highly recommend this tour especially to my family and friends from Tampa.

This excellent walking tour of Ybor City is an outstanding experience that locals, visitors, newcomers or anyone interested in the colorful, past of this multi-cultural community will enjoy. Manny Leto guided the group through decades of fascinating facts, very descriptive detail and really entertaining information while navigating through the busy streets to point out various landmarks and significant locations. The pace was easy and the total amount of walking was very manageable. Comfortable walking shoes and dressing for whatever weather awaits would be wise. To get the insights of author Scott Deitch presented in such a knowledgable and personable manner is really exceptional. The narrative never dragged and the information was provided in a very conversational manner. You won't feel like you are being lectured to or being read to from a script. This isn't strictly about Ybor's past but some of the shady characters and questionable activities (bootlegging and gambling, for instance) found throughout Tampa. Leto mentioned movies that have highlighted some of Ybor's history, prominent Tampa families who played a role in this community and blended in some basic history that helped to give everything, and everyone, context. Loved it, laughed at parts and learned lots.

ybor city mafia tour

Scott Deitch, author of the book "Cigar city mafia" lead us on a 2 hour walking tour of Cigar city herself. We learned a lot about Ybor's history and the influence the underworld had on her streets. Many of the areas favorite businesses were started by these men and still operate today. We stopped to talk about those businesses as well as buildings that "use to be" something much different then what they are today. We also learned a lot about how Tampa stayed a wet city durring prohibition and some of the violence between rival families. It was a very interesting tour if you are a history buff or have a mafia fascination. It is all outdoors, fast paced walking so I do suggest doing it in the fall if possible when it isn't so hot or rainy. You also get a cool tshirt included in the cost of the tour. I don't recommend this tour for kids or people with short attention spans.

ybor city mafia tour

Great tour ! A lot of unknown mafia history here in my home town.so many historical buildings as well as great sites. It is a about an hour and a half long so be prepared to wear comfortable shoes,as you will be walking the whole time. This definitely is a must if you are interested in learning more about the facts of Ybor City's mobsters

ybor city mafia tour

I had a very bad time with this company. I booked a tour for last Sunday & paid $60. On the day of the tour it was raining but I assumed that if they were to cancel they would either phone or email. They did neither. We went to the cigar shop where we were told to meet. There was nobody there not even a sign to say that the tour had been cancelled. When I called to make sure that I would get a refund I got a message back saying that I had never booked to go on that tour. When I emailed them the reference number to my booking they responded saying that I had booked the tour after it was sold out. They continued with some rubbish about it being my fault for leaving my browser open (which I didn't). They said that they have refunded my money & a lady for the company keeps leaving me very long messages about what a great company she runs and that every other customer has been treated better than me. She normally then repeats stuff about my open browser & how I had booked tickets after they had sold out the tour which they later cancelled.

Special Contrituro

To pinpoint a city's saucy landmarks, ask a secret agent.

That scheme led to a criminally good rendezvous in Tampa, now a hot draw with its new Riverwalk, chef-driven restaurants, craft breweries, quick access to Gulf-coast beaches and fascinating gangster heritage, some of which inspired a new blockbuster true-crime movie.

The Infiltrator  stars Bryan Cranston as undercover agent Robert Mazur, a Tampa resident who in the late 1980s helped smash Pablo Escobar's money-laundering operation and bring down the  Medellín Cartel , the world's largest illegal drug operation. Filmed around Tampa Bay, the film's settings make for an intriguing tour.

"In sunny Florida, drug traffickers and money launderers were as plentiful as palm trees," said Mazur, who, using the alias Bob Musella, befriended and worked with corrupt figures.

U.S. Customs' "Operation C-Chase," led by Mazur, brought the indictment of some 100 drug lords and bankers who cleaned their dirty money -- and the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI). Its demise began when Mazur, posing as mob-connected Musella, walked into BCCI's Tampa branch and was offered opportunities to launder money through its worldwide branches.

Here's a bit more about Mazur and the film:

The Infiltrator from Bob Mazur on Vimeo .

Just before the film's July premiere at the  Tampa Theatre  -- opened in 1924 -- Mazur guided me to favorite places tied to  The Infiltrator  action. Here's what I can reveal:

The Columbia Restaurant:  Florida's oldest restaurant fills an entire block in Ybor City, Tampa Bay's historic Latin Quarter. Since 1905, the Gonzmart family has run the restaurant, expanding it from a bar and sandwich shop to 1,700 seats. Six nights a week, there's Flamenco dancing; anytime, there's a sangria blended tableside with hand-selected cabernet and tempranillo, a Spanish grape, and fresh fruit. There's a story to every dish. Here, Mazur wined and dined subjects of his investigation, especially those from Colombia. Says Mazur: "This nightspot speaks to Tampa's rich Latin American heritage. The food is great, the Flamenco dancers fantastic."

Le Méridien Tampa:  Two years ago, the 1905 Beaux Arts building housing the U.S. District Courthouse was revived as spectacular boutique lodging. You can stroll the original terrazzo tile floors, dine and drink beneath the courtroom's coffered and crown-molded ceilings, make dinner reservations at a witness stand, and sleep in a judge's chamber. In the 1920s, customs agents worked here to thwart bootleggers. Cases heard included the 1950-51  Kefauver Committee  hearings about organized crime.

Gangsters using Tampa as their base included Charlie Wall; a copy of the Kefauver Committee report was left in his Ybor City bedroom during his murder. The Courthouse's  Infiltrator  connection: It's where the trial of BCCI officers and a top cartel player took place. Order a "Don't Judge Me" bourbon-berry cocktail from Le Méridien's bar.

Mazur recalls: "The stress of long-term undercover was no match for the tension of being prepared to testify every day for 12 weeks, while being questioned by some of the world's most respected defense counsel. I'll never forget anything about this building." Neither will guests of the sensational, like-no-other hotel and its swanky Bizou Brasserie.

Aloft Tampa Downtown:  On the new Riverwalk lining the Hillsborough River, this boutique property opened in 2014 in a building that formerly housed BCCI's Tampa branch. The hotel's super-cool WXYZ Bar is popular for local DJ nights and hanging out amid cool art at any hour. Poolside, enjoy the fire pit, chill tunes and beautiful views of the skyline, boats and wildlife on the river, and the new Riverwalk.

The Skyye Bar & Grille:  Mazur recalls: "I had 'business lunches' with BCCI officers and money brokers representing members of the Medellín Cartel. My guests were treated to fantastic views because the restaurant revolves 360 degrees atop the Tampa Airport Marriott."

Bern's Steak House:  Dine on the sly in this landmark's dark corners and unique private dessert rooms. The clandestine wine cellar is astonishing.

Franklin Exchange:  Federal agents arrested people targeted by Mazur's investigation in the garage of this grand neoclassical bank building that's now a downtown event space.

Bayshore Boulevard:  Often jogging this tranquil route along Tampa Bay between downtown and the classy iconic Colonnade Restaurant, Mazur and his supervisor developed Operation C-Chase.

Clearwater Beach:  "People within the cartel, just like everyone else, enjoy taking their families to beautiful vacation destinations," Mazur says. "As a 'businessman' within the cartel, I entertained 'clients' when they came to the Tampa Bay area. During stays arranged at Clearwater Beach, beyond social time with families used to develop rapport, the deadly business of the drug world was discussed and recorded during meetings."

Tampa Bay History Center:  A must-visit venue on Riverwalk exposing intriguing activities of pirates to the city's powerful Cuban, Italian and Anglo underworld gangs.

Take the mafia tour

To dig deeper into Tampa's scandalous history, I joined the newly expanded  Mafia Tour led by Scott Deitche , whose organized crime books include  Cigar City Mafia: A Complete History of the Tampa Underworld .

The city was the 1950s-1980s home to notorious mobster Santo Trafficante Jr. Illegal lottery-style bolita games and Prohibition-era rum-running rocked Ybor City, distinguished by a mix of Cuban, Spanish and Sicilian culture and easy access to Tampa's port. Ybor City's 1920s bootlegging and gangland crime inspired bestselling author  Dennis Lehane to write   Live by Night . Ben Affleck's film adaptation will release in 2017.

The Mafia Tour, presented by   Cigar City Magazine , runs about 90 minutes on select Saturdays and as private and group tours. Starting at King Corona Cigars Cafe/Bar, the foot tour loops a mile through Ybor City. Stops include the site of a huge mob hit, an old gambling palace, remnants of Tampa's biggest mob bar and some locations shot in  The Infiltrator .

Deitche covers stills to smugglers, how criminal casino operators evaded police, crime family holdings in pre-Castro Cuba and under Trafficante's leadership, and the chilling connection between the Tampa mob, CIA plots to kill Fidel Castro and the Kennedy assassination. At Cephas Hot Shop, selling aloe for health for 36 years, Cephas guided us to his colorful courtyard where  The Infiltrator  voodoo scene was filmed.

"I had the pleasure of taking Dennis Lehane on the mob tour while he was writing Live By Night  to give him a feel for Ybor City and historic places where the gangsters hung out," says Deitche. "That added a lot of realism to the book."

Mazur's home? Nope, it's not on the tour.

We did the new Mafia Tour with our guide Tom Floyd

My family are original Immigrants to Ybor City who came with the Cigar Trade from Spain and Italy. Tom Floyd was amazing. We all learned a lot. My Dad, Mom, Daughter and I heard compelling stories and visited the actual locations where the many stories of the Tampa underworld took place. We learned that Ybor City, and Tampa was ruled by notorious wise guys like Charlie Wall and others who were linked to many historic events that took place in Cuba and although not confirmed, may have had their hands in the assignation of JFK. Wow. Highly recommended this great tour. Thank you Tom for a great time. Our family had a great time. Warm regards, Todd Lopez

We had a BLAST on the Ybor City ghost tour! Steve was an AWESOME guide who shared fascinating history of Ybor the first hour of the tour. He also helped guide us thru the haunts of the Cuban club the 2nd hour, sharing stories and tips for capturing evidence! We definitely interacted with spirits of the club during the tour, and came home with a few spooky photos! Great experience for history lovers, teens, and fans of anything paranormal!!!

It should have been called a history tour not a ghost tour. Most of the time spent on the history of Ybor City. Interesting but signed up for a ghost tour. I had never been on a ghost tour before and checking off my bucket list. The equipment they gave us didn't work! Everyone else had a unit that kept beeping. Ours never did. Gets boring real fast! Save your money if you are looking for ghosts. Don't fall into their trap.

Max was a great guide we had a spooky good time. Ybor is a fascinating city with a lot of history. Just the right amount of time and reasonably priced.

I took my daughter and a couple of her friends on this tour. They loved it and want to go again. Steve was our guide. He's very knowledgeable and tells a great story. And he's a nice guy. It was fun learning so much of the history of Ybor City.

Max is informative, energetic, helpful and all around kind. I have done the tour twice now and enjoyed it just as much each time! Highly recommend.

Runner on the ground - LAURA

10 years of running

When most people think about the mafia, cities such as Chicago, New York City, Vegas, etc typically come to mind. But those who REALLY know the history know that Tampa played a huge role, and specifically Ybor City was a haven for mafia activity. And this activity went on for quite some time! Underground tunnels, illegal gambling, paying off mayors and police officers and a number of mafia ‘hits’ over the decades – especially during the Era of Blood, tell a different story than the one told by those who believe there was never any mafia in Tampa.

This 8k tour guides runners on a historical run from downtown into Ybor City, highlighting the early 1900s – more specifically the 1920s-1930s and how ‘innocent’ looking Tampa fell into this underworld so quickly and so heavily for the next several decades. It all starts with a man by the name of Charlie Wall. Charlie was not part of the mafia, but he was a huge fan of anything illegal. Hanging out in opium dens at a very young age, spiraled into a lifetime of crime and corruption that ultimately resulted in becoming enemies with the mafia when they wanted a piece of the action.

Your guide will walk you through the history, quite literally, of downtown and it’s local watering holes, gambling spots and other locations where both Charlie and ultimately Trafficante and other members of the mafia spent their time. You’ll hear about gruesome murders, government officials who looked the other way for the right dollar amount and a river that at one point was producing floating bodies on a regular basis for a solid decade. The Floridan Hotel, Le Meridien Hotel (the old courthouse where the Kefauver Hearings were held, locally), Oaklawn Cemetery and the Hillsborough River are a few of the stops that will be highlighted downtown.

As the tour transitions towards Ybor City your guide will talk more specifically about the mafia and it’s major players in Ybor City and surrounding areas in Tampa as Charlie Wall faded out of the scene and Trafficante Jr rose to power in the city. With everyone in his pocket and a very successful ‘business model’, he actually lived his life out unharmed and died of natural causes. But before that happened there were many years of hitmen (sawed off shotgun was the weapon of choice, almost exclusively), illegal/rigged gambling in the form of bolita, prostitution, smuggling booze during prohibition, smuggling people and other drugs, arson, etc. The tunnels are a major part of this history and will be brought up in quite a few of the stories along the way as they were (allegedly) used to smuggle narcotics/booze/people/etc and were even used in some hits where there was no trace of the assailant – only the body of the deceased. Lastly, your guide will take you by some locations where major players met their maker – often right in the middle of the street or in their car at a light.

With no shortage of stories and history, this tour is sure to make a Tampa mafia believer out of you. Add in a JFK assassination that almost happened right here in Tampa and a few local stories that you won’t find online and you’ll have no doubt in your mind after this!

Testimonials

We were fortunate enough to take an Ybor City tour with Max Herman as our guide in late May, 2023. Max was incredible — he provided tremendous, very insightful information in a very fun, unique way and was extremely welcoming and entertaining. My group of six loved the tour and what we learned about Ybor City’s incredibly interesting past. Thank you, Max!

Just wanted to tell you, the OFFICIAL Ybor City Ghost Tour was the highlight of our Florida mini-vacation! Thank you and we’ll be back!”

We loved our walking tour of Ybor City! Max was a terrific guide – very knowledgeable and extremely entertaining! This walking tour is a “must do” on anyone’s visit to the Tampa Bay area.

I really enjoyed the ghost tour I took with you last week. It was a great blend of historical information and scary ghost stories, told by a wonderful story teller.

If you plan to visit Ybor City, be sure to take a walk with Max. He brings the rich history of Ybor alive in a unique and entertaining way. He’s a great storyteller and makes the tour lots of fun.

The Ybor City smuggling tunnels are perhaps one of the greatest urban legends in Tampa, miles of tunnels underneath the city are rumored to have been used during the prohibition era to move liquor between speakeasies as well as to smuggle Chinese women to be sold into prostitution.

Tampa Mafia

The story starts on March 10, 1880, with the birth of Charles McKay “Charlie” Wall . His parents were Matilda McKay, the daughter of a former mayor, and Dr. John Perry Wall, a former Mayor of Tampa, civic leader, and highly respected physician who devoted his medical career to studying yellow fever and other communicable diseases.

Many sources indicate the death of his father as the breaking point for young Charlie Wall as he would end up shooting his stepmother with a .22 rifle and wounding her, resulting in him being sent to military school. He would then be expelled from military school for visiting a brothel. He spent his formative years in the gambling halls of Ybor and West Tampa where he learned the trades of the criminal underworld.

In the early 20th century, Wall controlled a number of gambling, prostitution, and illegal numbers rackets, mainly Bolita. Bolita is a lottery-type game that involves 100 small numbered balls mixed in a small bag, and bets are taken on which number is drawn. The game could be rigged in a variety of ways such as having extra balls of a given number or none at all, filling certain balls with lead so they would sink to the bottom of the bag, or putting certain balls in ice beforehand so they would be cold and therefore easy for the selector to find by touch.

Although the game was illegal in Florida, thousands of dollars in bribes to politicians and law enforcement officials kept the game running out in the open.

The first Italian gang in Tampa was created in 1925 by Ignacio Antinori, one of the first mobsters to emerge in Florida during the Prohibition era. He soon met Santo Trafficante Sr., a powerful mobster who had set up Bolita games throughout the city, and together with Antinori, expanded the Bolita games across the state. By the 1930s, Antinori was a well-known drug kingpin and an Italian crime boss, having one of the largest heroin trafficking operations in the country.

By this time, Ignacio Antinori and Charlie Wall were in a bloody war that would later be known as the “Era of Blood”. The feud ended on October 22, 1940, when Antinori had the back of his head blown off with a sawed-off shotgun while sipping coffee at the Palm Garden Inn in Tampa. The gunmen were not associated with Wall, but rather a dissatisfied customer, the Chicago Mafia, to whom Antonori refused to refund a bad shipment of narcotics.

The war left Wall’s organization weakened leaving Santo Trafficante Sr. as one of the last and most powerful bosses in Tampa. Trafficante had control of most of the city and began teaching his son Santo Trafficante Jr. how to run the city. Trafficante Sr. knew he was being watched by police and after Charlie Wall’s testimonial at the Kefauver hearings, both Trafficantes fled to Cuba.

After the hearings, the Trafficantes returned to Tampa and retook control of the city after killing Jimmy Lumia who controlled the city while they were in Cuba. In 1953, Trafficane Jr. survived an assassination attempt and suspected it was Charlie Wall. In April 1955, Wall was bludgeoned with a baseball bat and his throat slit in his home by an unknown number of assailants most likely sent on behalf of Trafficante Jr., a bloody end to Tampa’s first organized crime boss.

There’s no doubt that tunnels do exist under Ybor City but their purpose is highly debated. The most common belief is that bootleggers or the Tampa mafia dug the tunnels under many of the establishments along the Ybor City’s main drag, connecting them to the port and allowing easy smuggling of shipments of liquor in and out of the city.

This belief was further made popular in Scott Dietche’s book “ Cigar City Mafia: A Complete History of the Tampa Underworld ” where he says, “ Under the crowded streets of Ybor is a series of tunnels, the use of which has never been fully documented. The tunnels run under some of the early gaming palaces and down along the streets toward the port of Tampa. “

In late-2018, a tunnel was unearthed at 12th Street and Sixth Avenue during the beginning phase of development for a new headquarters for Masonite International, a manufacturer of interior and exterior doors. It was five feet tall and just as wide, the walls and ceiling were made up of three layers of brick with flooring made of wood. The Tampa Bay Times reported on the discovery with the headline “ Historians now agree: Ybor City’s tunnels were built as sewers, not smuggling routes .” According to many historians, the tunnels were built sometime between 1885 and the late 1890s as a storm and sanitary sewer, around the time Charlie Wall was still a young boy.

It resembled other dual-use sewers built in other cities during the 19th Century and had pipes dating back to that period, although it also had newer storm pipes from as recent as the 1970s and 1980s. Carlos Alfonso, an architect based in Ybor City and founder of Alliant Partners, the development company in charge of construction, says a 1927 plan has the tunnel labeled as a stormwater sewer. That’s not to say the old sewer system couldn’t have still been used during Prohibition by smugglers, but there’s zero evidence to back up the claim that they were used for smuggling.

Blue Ribbon Supermarket

default

In 2011, a portion of the tunnels was uncovered at the Southwest corner of 15th and 7th Avenue after heavy rains flooded the area. That corner was the site of the former Blue Ribbon Supermarket which burned down in August 2000 shortly after being purchased by a developer. The Blue Ribbon and the tunnels underneath the building were the focus of a 1994 news segment by WFLA-TV News Channel 8, where reporter Jeff Paterson received a tour of the tunnels from the Blue Ribbon’s owner’s nephew.

The building the Blue Ribbon Supermarket was housed in was first built as the Ybor City Post Office sometime around the 1880s which begs the question if these tunnels were actually dug by bootleggers, why would they build an entrance into a federal building? If that was the case, the city and for that matter, the federal government would have had to be involved in the construction of the tunnels.

If that was also the case, why would those government bodies even need smuggling tunnels in the first place if they ran the city and country, and were the ones who passed the 18th Amendment? The answers are simple and give credence to the belief that the tunnels were not built for smuggling at all. One other thing that should be pointed out is that Tampa at the time was so full of corruption that mobsters wouldn’t even need to hide their business. In 1912, a Jacksonville newspaper wrote, “ Tampa is reeking in crime, and gamblers operate openly. Tampa is the most wicked city in the U.S .”

Seminole Heights tunnels

In December 2018, Seminole Heights homeowner Marina Terracciano gave Fox 13 a tour of her historic home built in 1925. Under the house are what appear to be blocked entrances which she claims to open up into tunnels, one going under the Hillsborough River and another towards Ybor City. Her neighbor told her he went into one of the tunnels, one going under the river, and got scared after walking for 20 minutes and turned back around. There is no proof that these tunnels exist other than Terracciano’s testimony.

Further Debunking

Haydenville Tunnel. Source: Flickr "mookitty"

The two images above have been shared across social media as being photos from inside the tunnel underneath Ybor City. One post on Facebook reads, “Rare pictures of the hidden tunnels under Ybor city dating back before the prohibition era. As well as transporting booze to taverns, some say they were once used to Shanghai victims into maritime servitude.” The photos referenced were taken from an article on the website, Tampa is Awesome (which no longer exists), an extremely short read about the supposed tunnels and their connection to the mafia.

After a bit of digging, I was able to trace the origins of the photos. The first image (left) was taken by Flickr user “mookitty” (whose account has since been deleted) inside the Haydenville Tunnel in Haydenville, Ohio. The second image (right) was taken by Flickr user jcw1967 of the inside of a tunnel in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK. Why the photos were paired along with information about the tunnels is uncertain but it’s most likely a deliberate attempt to make their story more interesting. Other websites such as Only in Your State have followed suit in spreading these photos as proof of the tunnel’s purpose and existence.

Final Thoughts

To my knowledge, there are not many photos from inside these tunnels and all we have are these brief 2-3-minute news segments. While I do believe tunnels exist and at least once existed underneath Ybor City, I do not believe they were used by rumrunners. The legend probably came about naturally due to Al Capone’s presence in the Tampa Bay area and the existence of the Moose Jaw tunnels in Saskatchewan, Canada. The story goes that rumrunners would use the Moose Jaw tunnels to smuggle liquor onto freight cars, which ended up in Chicago for Al Capone’s massive bootlegging operations. It’s not hard to imagine that those rumors helped create the legend of the Ybor tunnels.

Although the Ybor tunnels are just sewers, they remain fascinating to me and I hope to one day be able to document these tunnels but as more portions get filled in and entryways are blocked off due to increasing construction, it seems I will never get a chance. So like you, I will continue on exploring the tunnels through what little documentation we have on them.

One Day in Ybor City

ybor city mafia tour

While many Tampa Bay area and Ybor City shops, attractions, and restaurants have paused operations during this difficult time, they will re-open to feed, engage, and entertain your family when it is safe to do so. So keep reading!

If you’re in the Tampa area consider spending a full day in Ybor City – it’s a designated National Historic Landmark District and is full of surprises! One great way to see Ybor is to hop on TECO Line Historic Streetcar from downtown. Tampa Bay’s iconic yellow streetcars are a mix of restored originals from the city’s early years and replicas. They run on dedicated tracks between downtown and historic Ybor City, powered by overhead electric lines. They carry passengers through downtown’s Convention District and Channelside.

ybor city mafia tour

Named after its founder, 19th Century cigar magnate Vicente Martinez-Ybor, this Tampa Bay community was the entry point and melting pot for generations of immigrants from Cuban, northern Spain, Sicily, Germany, and Eastern Europe. The cigar industry employed thousands of people and produced millions of cigars from the 1880s through the 1940s. Cigars are still made here, both by hand and by machine, but lately, Ybor City has become the city’s main entertainment district. During the day, restaurants fill with business people looking for lunch. In the evenings, Ybor City becomes the place for dinner and dancing. Late-night bring club-hoppers looking for the most cutting-edge bands. The brick streets and iron balconies are largely unchanged from a century ago, making Ybor a distinct location and one of two historic districts in Florida.

Begin your Ybor City experience with an informal breakfast at La Segunda Bakery (ask anyone at the counter for a tour of the bakery – chances are one of the owners of this family-run Ybor establishment will gladly take you inside). It’s located at 2512 N. 15th Street (813) 248-1531. For more than 100 years, this Ybor City institution has provided the special bread that makes a Cuban sandwich (the official sandwich of Tampa) so unique. The loaves are baked in earthen forms as they always have been. A single piece of palm leave laid down the middle of each loaf both creates the iconic crease in the top and gauges when the baking is done: when the leaf turns brown and starts to curl, it’s time for the bread to come out.

Isle de cuba

Until Cuba reopened its U.S. embassy in 2015, José Martí Park was the only piece of American soil owned by the people of Cuba. The park is dedicated to Cuban-born poet and revolutionary José Martí, who found support among Ybor City’s Cuban cigar workers for his fight to free Cuban from Spanish rule in the late 1800s. The park has been Cuban territory since 1956 and reflects Tampa Bay’s long, friendly relationship with the Cuban people. Visit during the day: as international territory, the park is gated and locked after 5 p.m.

If you happen to visit on a Saturday, make your way to Centennial Plaza a few blocks away to check out year-round Saturday morning for fresh produce and locally produce crafts, baked goods, and the obligatory cigars and cigar products. In Ybor descendants of cigar makers have come up with inventive ways to recycle cigar boxes (cigar purses) and labels (bookmarks, picture frames). A walking tour of Ybor City is obligatory with Grand Master Cigar Roller Dr. Wallace (aka Wally) Reyes (one of 4 master rollers in the world). Just across from the Saturday Market and Centennial Plaza is the Ybor City Museum State Park where you meet him for the guided tour which is 2 hrs long.

Chickens

Ybor City’s immigrant history lives on today in the lives of some very Ybor City chickens that range free among the bushes, streets, and sidewalks of Tampa Bay’s historic Latin Quarter. That rooster you hear crowing down the block is descended from backyard birds kept by Cuban, Spanish, Sicilian and German immigrants who built Ybor City into the Cigar Capital of the World during the Gilded Age. The birds are protected from harm by a city ordinance that makes Tampa a bird sanctuary. The chickens have a large following thanks to a fan who started the Ybor Chickens Society this spring,

It’s time for lunch at  Columbia Restaurant  –  Florida’s oldest eatery fills an entire city block in the heart of Tampa Bay’s historic Latin Quarter. Since 1905, the Gonzmart family has operated the restaurant, expanding it over the years to over 1,700 seats. 6 nights a week, the restaurant features Flamenco dancing at  2025 E. Seventh Avenue (813) 248-4961

As they have for 130 years, Cuban immigrants still roll cigars by hand in Ybor City. You can see them at work in several stores along Seventh Avenue. Tabanero is one of the most popular and largest. The staff will tell you about Tampa Bay’s history as the Cigar Capital of the World and suggest a smoke for the adventurous novice or the expert. The factory is located at 1601 E. 7th Ave. One of many outstanding cigar shops is Long Ash , where you can watch cigars being hand-rolled by two rollers (including a woman) at this shop owned by born a fourth-generation Tampa native who inherited a long history of blending his Tampa background with Ybor City’s rich heritage of fine cigars. Shop for cigar-inspired gifts  at 1728 E 7th Ave (813) 374-0346

Ybor CIty

Stop in at  Cigar City Cider & Mead for a refreshing Mango cider – part of Tampa Bay’s Cigar City craft brewing company, this intimate establishment focused on cider and mead instead of beer. The brews are at 1812 N. 15th Street, (813) 242-6600. Tampa actually has the largest selection of craft breweries in Florida (and among largest in the US), so if craft beer appeals, Coppertail Brewing Co . is your place – a key player in Tampa Bay’s booming craft beer movement. The brewer has made a name for itself for both the variety of its beer and the quirkiness of the art in its tasting room. You’ll find then at 2601 East 2nd Avenue, (813) 247-1500.

You’re now ready for a Mafia Tour of Ybor City with Scott Deitche (90 mins to 2 hrs). Tampa has a long history of underground organizations and was the home of notorious mobster Santo Trafficante in the 1960s and 1970s. Tampa’s federal courthouse (now a beautiful boutique hotel, Le Meridien) was the setting for the trials set in motion by Robert Mazur’s deep undercover investigation of the Medellín drug cartel and money laundering by BCCI – and recounted in the book The Infiltrator, which was turned into a movie by the same name.

From illegal lottery-style bolita games to rum-running during Prohibition, much of Tampa Bay’s illegal activity centered on Ybor City, the city-within-a-city that was a mix of Cuban, Spanish and Sicilian culture that had easy access to Tampa’s port and roadways. Ybor City’s history of bootlegging and gangland crime during the 1920s inspire author Dennis Lehane to write “Live by Night,” which Ben Affleck turned into a feature film that was released in 2017. The tour will take you to old gambling palaces, street corners and alleys where some mobsters met their demise, and restaurants where wise guys like famed boss Santo Trafficante Jr. held court.

You’ll need a drink after the tour, and what better venue than the  Lion’s Den , home to the Cigar City Barbershop, which bills itself as a “speakeasy barbershop.” – just head over to 1704 1/2 East 7th Avenue,  and go upstairs. Afterward you’ll get a terrific dinner at Carne Chop House in the historic Centro Español building, 1536 E. Seventh Avenue, (813) 341-9555

Ybor City

Ybor City’s unique history envelops this restaurant in the landmark Centro Español, one of five ethnic social clubs that were (and in some cases still are) the hubs for life among Ybor City’s immigrant-rich community. The Centro Español served Ybor’s Spanish and Cuban communities with tea dances up to the 1950s. Other clubs that remain in operation are the Cuban Club, the Italian Club, and the Spanish Centro Asturiano.

Dance the night away – then it’s time to think about day 2!

Experience Tampa's Haunted History on These Chilling Ghost Tours

It’s the time of year when ghosts and ghouls are everywhere you look. October isn’t the only month to experience some seriously spooky stuff around the Tampa Bay area, though. The spirits of old Tampa are here year-round and have been for decades, especially in haunted places like Ybor City . Ghost hunters and psychics are often found diving deep into some of Tampa’s most notorious hot spots, hoping to connect with the past. Want to be part of the action? These ghost tours in Tampa Bay are your ticket to a spooky date night.

Tampa’s Most Haunted Places

  • The Cuban Club
  • Tampa Theatre
  • University of Tampa’s Plant Hall
  • Florida Brewing Company (now home to Swope Rodante Law Firm)

Ybor City’s rich history includes historical events like  the largest fire in Tampa’s history  in 1914, which consumed 17 city blocks and tragically took many lives along the way. And with buildings dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, it’s no wonder numerous hauntings and apparitions have been reported throughout town.

The Don Vincente Hotel, built in 1895, is supposedly one of the most haunted buildings in the entire country. It is known today as Casa Ybor but was once a hotel, meeting house, and hospital. Plenty of ghostly happenings have been reported, and an episode of Travel Channel’s The Dead Files was filmed on-site.

Another hotspot for hauntings is The Cuban Club, built in 1917, where several ghosts are rumored to eternally roam.

Tampa Theatre, the University of Tampa’s Plant Hall (formerly the old Tampa Bay Hotel), and the original Florida Brewing Company (now home to Swope Rodante Law Firm) are also notorious for paranormal activity.

Ghost tours in Ybor City

Tampa Theatre opened in 1926 and has been a Tampa institution ever since. Over the years, it’s also become a place where spirits have chosen to spend their afterlife, becoming one of the most haunted places in Tampa. The theatre has drawn numerous paranormal investigators and psychics who have all had their own first-hand experiences.

Tampa Theatre’s Director of Marketing, Jill Witecki, has been with the theatre for 11 years and leads their haunted tour, which takes place on select dates in October. The tour leads patrons through various areas of the theater as Jill recounts several different stories with ghostly proof to back it up. There are no costumed characters or special effects and no need. The stories alone are enough to send tingles down your spine.

“There are six locations where the most people have had the most experiences in Tampa Theatre. Now, we’ve heard from people who have been in the building, psychics who have been here, and other people who’ve had experiences. We have far more entities in the building in various locations, including the balcony, including some other spots up on the stage,” said Jill.

“But those six spots we hit on the tour, we have the most stories, the most evidence, the most research associated that we can really tell a meaningful story.”

“What’s important to me when we do these ghost tours is of course, to be entertaining, but to really tell the true history of Tampa Theatre in a new and different way. So yes, the stories are big and fun and told in a creepy way, but they are rooted in truth. I do my best to tell the stories as accurately as I possibly can, supported by as much accurate research and accurate events as I possibly can. ”

If you are interested in learning about the history of Ybor City, you are not alone. This immigrant-filled neighborhood is a mafia hotspot and an artist enclave, but it has a diverse population, as well. There are many things to see and do in Ybor City, and tours are an excellent way to explore this unique area. But what should you avoid? If you’re a history buff, here are some tips to make your experience as educational and as enjoyable as possible:

Ybor City is an immigrant melting pot

Ybor City, Florida, is a National Historic Landmark District that features a diverse population of immigrants. In the early 20th century, Ybor City was the “Cigar Capital of the World,” producing half a billion cigars each year. With so many immigrants, Ybor City was a thriving immigrant community that offered affordable housing to immigrants, a strong Cuban community, and a thriving cigar industry. The area’s growth and development made it a melting pot of different ethnicities.

ybor city mafia tour

It is an artist enclave

Ybor City, Florida is an artist enclave where artists, including David Audet, paint outside of public galleries and have their own clubs. Since the 1970s, artists have been climbing the 32 steps to the second floor of the Cuban Club, a historic building built in 1917. The art colony has a unique atmosphere with the sounds of the 7th Avenue outside the window.

It is a mafia hotspot

Ybor city is home to one of Tampa’s most notorious mobs. The Italian Mafia had a foothold in Ybor City during the early twentieth century. During this time, a game known as Bolita was played in the area, where players placed bets on the numbers drawn by the person who held the bag. Ybor City is a U.S. national historic landmark

Ybor City is a historic Latin Quarter in Tampa Bay, Florida. The neighborhood is also home to Jose Marti Park, dedicated to the Cuban poet, journalist, and leader of the revolution against Spanish rule in the 1880s and 1890s. Founded by Spanish immigrants, Ybor City was home to many different nationalities. Spanish, Cuban, Italian, German, and Rumanian Jews lived there alongside Spanish and Russian-born citizens. The city’s close proximity to Cuba made it an important hub for exiles.

It is Tampa’s Latin Quarter

It is Tampa’s Latin Quarter, a historic area one mile northeast of downtown Tampa. The area’s cigar-making heritage began in the 1880s, and it soon became known as the Cigar Capital of the World. A group of immigrants, led by Vicente Martinez Ybor, developed the area into a multiethnic manufacturing community. Although the majority of Cuban emigrants settled in Miami, Tampa’s Cuban community has retained a distinct Latin culture and atmosphere.

It is a cigar capital of the world

Ybor city is a unique blend of different cultures. This is partly due to the cigar industry which reigned from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. The American government increased tariffs on imported cigars, leading Cuban companies to start factories in the United States. This industry grew rapidly in Ybor, and the city became a global phenomenon. The population of the city doubled from 600 to 6,000 people by the end of the nineteenth century. The population of Ybor City was also made up of a large Cuban population – 15 percent of the entire population.

It has a vibrant nightlife

The global Cigar market is undergoing a major transition. It is being redefined and re-designed as new consumer behavior and lifestyles change. It is crucial to adapt and keep up with trends to stay ahead of the curve. Keeping up with trends and changes is critical to managing change and uncertainty in the marketplace. Here are some things to consider when it comes to market trends:

The Ybor City cigar industry dates back to the early 1900s. The cigar industry flourished in the city’s port, close to Cuba. During that time, there were over two hundred factories producing half a billion hand-rolled cigars. Tampa cigar makers such as Findy Cigar Company also manufactured their products in Ybor City. During this period, Ybor City was also known as the “Cigar Capital of the World.”

While Ybor City’s cigar industry was centered on Latin culture, it was not a strictly Latin neighborhood. German, Jewish, and Chinese immigrants settled in the neighborhood. Each ethnic group had a significant impact on the community, whether it was cigar making, art, or entertainment. The Cubans helped shape cigars and cigar box art, while Germans helped develop the Cuban sandwich. In addition to preserving their history, Ybor City is a cultural hotspot.

General Cigar Company

The General Cigar Company, one of the largest premium cigar companies in the U.S., recently raised the prices of many of its cigars. According to a spokesperson, MSRPs have increased an average of 5 percent. The company also began developing real estate in the 1970s, converting parts of its 6,300-acre holdings into warehouses and industrial sites. While this increase in price is not unprecedented, it is not the only change to the industry in the last 45 years.

The company began making Macanudo cigars in 1971, after purchasing the Temple Hall cigar producing facility in Jamaica. The wrapper of these cigars is made from a specially developed seed of tobacco. In the late 1970s, the company purchased the rights to manufacture Partagas cigars in the U.S. from the Cifuentes family, which had been making them in Cuba until Castro took power.

Habanos S.A.

In February, Cuba’s company, Habanos S.A., cancelled its upcoming Festival del Habano. The event, scheduled to take place in the capital at the end of February 2022, was cancelled due to a health crisis. It is not clear exactly why this was the case, but it is believed that the company’s current recovery has something to do with the cancellation. The company has no immediate explanation, but we can speculate based on the financial results and the company’s recent announcement.

While the company does not have a direct relationship with the Cuban government, it is still closely linked to the country’s economy. Its brands include Cohiba, Montecristo, and Romeo y Julieta. The company has a network of exclusive distributors in 150 countries, and the firm’s president has a wealth of experience in protecting trademarks. Habanos S.A.’s corporate culture is based on tradition, and the company is proud to celebrate its ancestry by recognizing its ancestors.

The Spanish and French multinational tobacco company Altadis is one of the largest producers of cigars in the world. Formed in 1999 through the merger of Tabacalera and SEITA, Altadis was the world’s largest cigar producer. In addition, Altadis owned half of the Cuban state tobacco monopoly, Habanos S.A., and the former Consolidated Cigar Holdings. In 2008, Altadis was purchased by British tobacco giant Imperial Tobacco.

The companies disagree on whether Altadis, S.A., should have an independent marketing and strategic plan. According to Altadis, S.A., the company has insufficient ties to Florida to satisfy the due process clause and the jurisdictional requirement. However, they are unable to deny that their respective companies have overlapping duties with Altadis, S.A., in the U.S.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

ybor city mafia tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport.
