2005 6.0L Excursions...Fuel Mileage?

Hey boys and girls...what kind of fuel mileage are y'all getting out of 2005 6.0L Excursions? Thanks!
Hi 'mkb I have an '05 Excursion Eddie Bauer with the 6.0 and 4x4. It hasn't been on any long trips except when I brought it home after taking delivery of it. (I live in Paducah, KY and I bought it in St. Louis, MO.) The overhead showed 21.1 when I got home and I zeroed it and it had a full tank of fuel before I left the dealership. Around town it gets about 16.5 and it is pretty consistent with that figure. Hope this helps. Craig.
I have a 2005 4X2 with 44,000 + miles. I keep track of mileage in an excel spreadsheet and I have gotten 18.35 MPG since new. I had a re-flash done a while back and the mileage has since improved. The last 14,000 miles I have gotten 18.92 MPG combined city and HWY. RoyC
Mine's an '04 (with 285's and no speedo adjust) and I get 18-20 on the HWY. Just did a 650 mile round trip that included some city driving and about half smaller country roads (slow down, speed up, stop etc) and got 18.3. Around town, as in stop and go traffic, 12-15. Mixed is 14-16. Towing 7500# boat is 12-15. There are so many variables also.

Depends on how you drive them and not everyone will get the same. Mine is 14-14.5 in town and 18-19 on the road the way I drive it.

Precision Fuel Pump Module Assembly
Motorcraft fuel pump and sender assembly, fuel sending units and switches.
The fuel tank sending unit is a fuel level sensor located inside your gas tank that measures the amount of fuel in the tank, and communicates this information to the fuel gauge on your dashboard. Depending on your type of vehicle, the fuel sending unit can be a stand-alone unit, or may be attached to the fuel pump. Fuel sending units utilize a float attached to an arm that changes the position of an electrical resistor as the fuel level rises and falls in the tank. This change in electrical resistance is sent to your fuel gauge to be interpreted as the appropriate fuel level measurement. Some fuel sending units may also feature a secondary sensor that activates a low fuel light if fuel falls below a set level. If your fuel gauge is fluctuating, displaying inaccurate fuel levels, or not working at all, then you may have a failing fuel sending unit. Corrosion, wiring problems, a faulty resistor, or float arm mechanical failure can all cause issues with the fuel sending unit's accuracy and performance, so it may be a good idea to remove the fuel sending unit from the tank and inspect or test it before opting for replacement. Any time the fuel sending unit is removed from the tank, it is important to inspect and/or replace the gasket or sealing ring as well, as failure to do so may allow fuel vapor or liquid fuel to escape from the tank. It is also not uncommon for fuel sending unit floats to leak over the course of time, and this can allow the float to fill with fuel and sink to the bottom of the tank. If that is the case, it may be possible to simply replace the float. Testing the electrical resistance of the fuel sending unit with a multimeter can also help you determine if the problem is in the fuel sending unit itself, or if the fuel gauge, wiring, or a fuse or relay may be the source of the problem. My '00 Ex has a plastic tank. No delamination/rust issues like the trucks.
What tank do you have? Looking for a plastic tank for my 03 Exc
I think the OP is referring to the Hutch and Harpoon Mods. I'm planning on doing both Mods in the next few weeks.
I believe the tanks and in-tank pickup/pumps are different and do not require the same modifications as the trucks.

Ahhh, ok. Gotcha. I'll have to look those up.
The Excursion will benefit from the Hutch and Harpoon mods. It has the same pickup as the trucks as well as the issue with the vent hose extending into the tank.

I watched a video online and the tank is clearly bigger with a different looking pickup. I can fit 43 gallons on a fill up on a 44 gallon tank. Trucks that aren't harpooned can only fit 29 gallons. With harpoon can fit 33 gallons. Math doesn't ad up and the pump in the video I watched looks like a different system. No fragile pickup to break off and no pre filters. It almost looked like the pickup was attached the bottom of the tank. Dunno.

Funny that the post you link to contradicts what you say here... Your link is to a single post, in which the author states that he has done both (hutch and harpoon) and does not state that, in his opinion, the harpoon mod is not necessary. The harpoon adds capacity by raising the tank vent line closer to the top of the tank, so if that is what someone is looking for, the mod works. If you are already in the tank to do the hutch mod, why would you not want to do the harpoon mod at the same time? :dunno: For those that are having difficulty getting the large sized diesel nozzle to fit..you can do what we did back in the day when you had 2 different sized nozzles for leaded and unleaded fuel. You smash that thing limiting access out of your way. It isn't for the faint of heart or for the OCC Ex owner, but if you could give a crap less what it looks like, it works.:laugh:

04 6.0 Excursion fuel tank issues. Hey everyone, new here, but having a weird on going issue with the truck. While back had the flaky fuel sending unit issue. Bought a new Motorcraft sending unit and replaced it my self. While installing I had a very hard time getting the locking ring down and to spin on, heard that can be an issue, but I digress.
