She Was Pretty OST PART 6

Park Seo Joon (박서준) – Long Way (먼 길) Lyrics (She Was Pretty (그녀는 예뻤다) OST Part 6 (MBC 수목드라마)) + English Translation

Hangul lyrics.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

After coming back from a long way, now I finally know The person I’ve been looking for Is you, who was right next to me

Let’s never do that again Being in as much pain as we love each other Let’s do this from now on Let’s never let go of our hands that was so hard for us to hold

All the time that remains for you and I I want to spend it all for us Until the last day we close our eyes I will love you just like I do right now

Let’s never do that again Being far away from each other as much as we love each other Let’s do this from now on Let’s never let go of our hands that was so hard for us to hold

Why did it take so long and why was it so hard for us to look at each other? Now the world will change with just our love All the time that remains for you and I I want to spend it all for us Until the last day we close our eyes I will love you just like I do right now

I will only love you forever

The story revolves around Kim Hye Jin (Hwang Jung-eum), who transforms from a school beauty into an ordinary-looking woman, and her past acquaintance Ji Sung-Joon (Park Seo Joon), who fails to recognize her due to her changed appearance. She Was Pretty was praised by viewers for its focus on the importance of self-love. However, the show is not without flaws. Yoon hong-dae.

Despite a star-studded cast, the film didn't meet expectations, with viewers and critics finding the storyline overly contrived.

3 What's Wrong with Secretary Kim (2018)

Lee young joon, what's wrong with secretary kim (2018).

Park Seo-joon delivers a wonderful performance, skillfully portraying Young Joon’s transition from a self-centered boss to a character showing genuine growth and depth.

What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim is a light-hearted romantic comedy and one of the steamiest K-dramas of recent years. The story follows vice-chairman Lee Young-joon (Park Seo-joon), who is determined to make his competent secretary Kim Mi-so (Park Min-young) stay, even after she announces her resignation. Park Seo-joon delivers a wonderful performance, skillfully portraying Young Joon’s transition from a self-centered boss to a character showing genuine growth and depth. Despite the show containing some romance clichés, Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young share great on-screen chemistry that radiates throughout the series.

2 Itaewon Class

Itaewon Class is commonly referred to as being one of the best K-dramas ever , and Park Seo-joon's performance is a real highlight. Following a prison sentence for attempting to kill the tycoon's son, Sae-roi is released and chooses to honor his father by opening 'DanBam,' a pub in Seoul's Itaewon district. Park Seo-joon's ability to depict Sae-roi's inner turmoil, unwavering determination, and gradual transformation into a savvy business leader is extraordinary.

1 Fight For My Way

Fight For My Way is a charming K-Drama that masterfully blends friendship, romance, family, and ambition. Park Seo Joon shines as Dong Man, an adorably dim former Taekwondo athlete turned ordinary worker, battling his past and striving for success. The show, with its relatable characters and slice-of-life feel, is like comfort food - cozy and satisfying. Its realistic portrayal of everyday struggles and the sparky chemistry between the leads make it a super engaging watch. Park Seo-joon won several awards for his exceptional performance , including 'Best Couple' with co-star Kim Ji-won and the 'Outstanding Actor Award' at the 13th Seoul International Awards.

The ‘Marvels’ Actor Who Starred in One of Netflix’s Best K-Dramas

Years before his Hollywood debut in 'The Marvels,' this actor gave the performance of a lifetime in a critically acclaimed K-Drama.

The Big Picture

  • The Marvels actor Park Seo-joon's role in the K-Drama Itaewon Class showcased his exceptional talent and range as an actor.
  • The series broke conventions by openly addressing social discrimination and subverting the typical revenge story.
  • Park's nuanced portrayal of protagonist Park Sae-ro-yi charts fifteen years of character development and is a tour de force performance.

Park Seo-joon , an established household name in Korea, stands poised to sweep onto the Hollywood stage with The Marvels , the Brie Larson -fronted sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel and the MCU's 33rd feature film. Best known to general American audiences through his brief but pivotal role in filmmaker Bong Joon-ho 's award-winning Parasite , Park built his name primarily through rom-coms. In 2018, The Korea Times dubbed him “the master of romantic comedy" for his breakthrough role in the workplace romance K-Drama What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim . On that score, there's no doubt. Park proved himself profoundly adept at infusing Kim 's stereotypical rich jerk love interest with startling vulnerability. That was foreshadowing at its finest. For the defining performance of Park's career to date, and a role replete with far more rewards , one must turn to the 2020 Netflix-distributed series Itaewon Class .

In a delightful stroke of fate, The Marvel s ' director Nia DaCosta cast Park after discovering Itaewon Class during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many who were secluded in their homes, DaCosta, already a K-Drama fan, "binge-[watched]" the series. "Park looked really cool in the drama," she told Cine21 . "Then, I started watching other works by him and remembered his name. [...] Afterward, I took charge of directing The Marvels , and while thinking about who would be suitable for the role of Prince Yan, Park Seo-joon came to mind." Park receiving blockbuster recognition is more than deserved — it's practically commanded , an inevitability for a performer whose towering commitment and charisma delivered a tour de force in Itaewon Class (which is, conveniently and perhaps relatedly, one of the most satisfyingly subversive and highest-rated K-Dramas of all time ).

Itaewon Class

An ex-con opens a street bar in Itaewon, while also seeking revenge on the family who was responsible for his father's death.

What Is the Netflix K-Drama ‘Itaewon Class’ About?

Based on the webtoon of the same name, Itaewon Class follows a group of outcasts who open DanBam, a restaurant-bar in Seoul's popular Itaewon district. DanBam's staff is truly a gathering of the ostracized: Park Sae-ro-yi (Park Seo-joon), an ex-convict who didn't graduate high school; Jo Yi-seo ( Kim Da-mi ), a young influencer with an immense IQ and professionally diagnosed as a sociopath; Ma Hyun-yi ( Lee Joo-young ), a trans woman; Kim To-ni ( Chris Lyon ), a Guinean-Korean man; and Choi Seung-kwon ( Ryu Kyung-soo ), a former gang leader. Together they create not just a staff but a found family. DanBam is a safe haven for each character to realize their dreams and embrace their identities , discriminatory society be damned.

Every narrative root in this tree traces back to Park Sae-ro-yi. Long before his restaurateur ambitions, a teenage Sae-ro-yi punched a bully for harassing another student. That bully happened to be Jang Geun-won ( Ahn Bo-hyun ), the irresponsibly privileged son of Jang Dae-hee ( Yoo Jae-myung ), CEO of the food industry conglomerate Jangga Group. Sae-ro-yi, raised by his father to always abide by his principles, refused to apologize for defending an innocent. He's expelled from school. The father who taught him well, Park Sung-yeol ( Son Hyun-joo ), resigned from his job at Jangga in solidarity with his son and after witnessing the company's top-down corruption. He assured Sae-ro-yi that he did the right thing, recognizing that choice's difficulty and his son's maturity.

Soon after, Geun-won's reckless driving caused Sung-yeol's death. A devastated Sae-ro-yi assaulted Geun-won and spent three years incarcerated for it. (Unsurprisingly, Dae-hee concealed his son's crime.) Following Sae-ro-yi's release from prison, he turned his fathomless grief into calculated purpose. He opened DanBam as part of a long-term strategized revenge : if he can turn his restaurant into a successful franchise, he has the resources to beat Jangga Group at their own game .

‘Itaewon Class’ Breaks K-Drama Expectations

Itaewon Class was a critical and commercial success. Its narrative openly eviscerated social inequality, the wealth gap, and the conservative Korea's ongoing epidemic of transphobia and racism. In so doing, Itaewon Class broke expected conventions . This is a revenge tale of Biblical proportions pitting the weakest against the strongest that eschews glorifying moral ambiguity or employing sentimentality in service of an easy, uplifting ending . Every character is flawed. There are no deus ex machina solutions. The story is bittersweet because life is bittersweet. When honor triumphs, it's due to a moral resilience that prioritizes each individual's agency. Choosing to live despite — and to spite — prejudice, systematic injustice, and every evil invented by the world, requires endurance. Although Itaewon Class acknowledges this unfairness, it doesn't model endurance as a righteous thing and demand its characters better themselves by suffering for suffering's sake. Instead, it champions a world where DanBam's outcasts succeed in their dreams because "living well" is the best kind of revenge. When Itaewon Class explores the moral grayness we possess, it's not here to judge. It's here to be empathetically human.

‘The Marvels’ Park Seo-joon Gives a Nuanced Performance in ‘Itaewon Class’

Before Itaewon Class 's premiere, Park Seo-joon shared his passion for the role of Park Sae-ro-yi. "I read the comic before I was cast and I was so captivated by the character that I imagined how I would act out certain aspects of Sae-ro-yi," he said. "But I didn’t know I would actually be able to." To any performer, portraying Sae-ro-yi's journey would probably seem Shakespearian. He was once a normal, introverted boy who loved his dad, had a crush on a girl, and habitually rubbed his head when he was self-conscious. He stood up for what was right; in return, Jangga Group utterly destroyed his life. Park Seo-joon tracks each stage of his character's evolution across fifteen years with both the raw, unhealed agony and the necessary restraint . The first episode concludes with a boy gutturally sobbing in the rain . The man who emerges years later hardly seems like the same person. In many ways, he isn't: Sae-ro-yi has locked his easily wounded vulnerability behind a Fort Knox of barriers, the first being a logical, cool exterior. He isn't uncaring, but he is uncompromising. He's no longer existing to "live well" like his father taught. Rather, he's made taking down Jangga his life's purpose, no matter how unscaleable a mountain that is.

But living for revenge isn't fulfilling. It rots the soul. Yi-seo bears witness to the scars covering Sae-ro-yi's arms and remarks, “You must’ve had a hard life all alone.” In a separate scene, Sae-ro-yi acknowledges his internal emptiness: “My life is a little bitter. It's just too bitter. I can't sleep well at night, I feel nostalgic, lonely, and upset. [...] I want my bitter night and my life to be sweet." Itaewon Class 's portrayal of grief is hauntingly realistic, as is the path of emerging from its darkness while still haunted by its shadow. Sae-ro-yi knows he can't recover his adolescent innocence, but trying to fill the grieving hole inside him with vengeance turns him into a self-fulfilling prophecy. He spends years in the dark before beginning to heal. Yet even at his lowest, Sae-ro-yi can't forget the principles his father carved into him like DNA. He protects his staff. He uplifts them. In return, the love and trust they bestow upon him — something he didn't prepare for — help him heal. Itaewon Class begins as a revenge fable and ends with an emotionally scarred Sae-ro-yi restored to the justice-seeking, empathetic, self-sacrificing person his father raised. The series allows Sae-ro-yi to explore and indulge moral grays without elevating or condemning him . Instead, Itaewon Class says our brief, precious lives aren't worth wasting. Sae-ro-yi surrenders his carefully planned revenge because the revenge he imagined no longer matters. His victory takes a different form.

Emerging from the delightful yet restrictive romcom genre lets Park Seo-joon demonstrate his true versatility. Park testified to wanting this in an interview with Esquire Korea , via Soompi: "I wanted to take on a different kind of genre. Although [ Itaewon Class ] was a drama that had elements of multiple genres, I thought what was most important was [my character's] growth as a person." By its conceit, Itaewon Class demands much from its lead actor. Park must capture both of Sae-ro-yi's extremes — a sobbing boy and a relentless man — yet exist in the middle and keep that middle compelling. Breaking through Sae-ro-yi's barriers takes almost sixteen episodes, and Park never feels repetitive. Without overplaying his hand, each nuanced expression and gesture conveys Sae-ro-yi's contradictory shades: bashful, direct, hateful, heartfelt. Park inhabits the character; there is no performance. When Sae-ro-yi seizes Jang Geun-won by the hair and screams "Why?" into his face, it's a cry to a universe that deals pain without sense or mercy. When Sae-ro-yi screams in the rain, spit emerges with his tears. To follow that with a controlled reserve always close to shattering? It’s a cumulative masterpiece that feels wrenched from Park's soul .

Park Seo-joon Deserves Worldwide Recognition

Speaking to The Guardian ahead of The Marvels , Park Seo-joon said, "When I first heard that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to speak with me, I couldn’t believe it. I actually couldn’t believe it. [...] I’m not someone who has a fear of challenges, but whether I am filming in South Korea or abroad, everything is a challenge for me. So, I did feel some nerves at first. But everyone was so helpful and welcoming that I was able to find my feet really quickly." To audiences familiar with Park's work, Nia DaCosta's interest is as obvious as the sun is bright. Who wouldn't cast Park Seo-joon if they held the power? From She Was Pretty to What's Wrong with Secretary Kim , Park forged himself into a constantly captivating watch. Itaewon Class let him flourish into an unmissable talent . His performance, in all its vulnerable nuances, haunts long after the credits roll.

Itaewon Class is available to stream on Netflix.

"The Marvels": Here's your primer to Park Seo-joon, your new MCU hero

Before he makes his marvel debut, check out his back catalog where he proves his action and comedy chops, by joy saha - hanh nguyen.

On Tuesday,  Marvel Studios  dropped the trailer for "The Marvels," its upcoming woman-centric superhero film, which offered much to dig into.

Helmed by "Candyman" director Nia DaCosta, the highly awaited showcase focuses on Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), whose powers become entangled with those of superfan Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) — who we met in the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel" — and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) — who we last saw in the Disney+ series "WandaVision." The trio must ultimately come together and learn how to use their unlikely powers to save the universe from mayhem.

As expected with any MCU trailer, "The Marvels" is riddled with Easter Eggs and surprise appearances, including one from Park Seo-joon . The acclaimed South Korean actor first disclosed his role in a 2022 interview with The Guardian , saying, "When I first heard that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to speak with me, I couldn't believe it. I actually couldn't believe it."

At the time of his casting, not much was known about Park's role. But now — thanks to the additional clues — fans have finally pieced together who Park's MCU character may be.

Although American audiences may not be that familiar with Park, he's been consistently leading movies and TV shows for the past decade, and has a massive following long before his cameo in the Oscar-winning "Parasite." It seems in this case, k-drama viewers may have the leg up on the MCU fandom.

Here's a closer look at who Park is expected to be playing along with a rundown of his best roles and where you can watch to familiarize yourself with the next MCU hero.

Prince Yan, the Singing Prince

Prior to the trailer's release, many Netizens theorized that Park would play Amadeus Cho , the Korean-American superhero who succeeded Bruce Banner as the Hulk. That theory, however, was a bust considering that Cho is a teen (in fact, Park is four years younger than Claudia Kim, who plays Amadeus' mother Helen Cho in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ) and he isn't strongly tied to Captain Marvel or the other members of the Marvel family.

It was later rumored that "The Marvels" characters would "go to a planet where they can only communicate in song," per one insider on Twitter . Specifically, the planet in question is named Aldana, where the residents speak entirely in rhyme, per Issue #9 of Captain Marvel . Fans then speculated that Park was playing Carol's new "husband" or Yan, the Prince of Aladna .

This seems to track judging from what's seen in the trailer. In one scene, Park is seen sporting a colorful regal outfit, fitted with shoulder pads and a sword, worthy of royalty. His mouth is open wide – either yelling or possibly singing. Another scene reveals an elaborate choreographed dance, which seems to take place on Aladna.

"The Marvels" is set to premiere in theaters on Nov. 10. Watch a trailer for it below, via YouTube :

If you don't want to wait until November to understand what the big deal is about Park and his casting, you can start checking out some of his best roles below – including plenty of action projects – which are available to stream now.

Park's most notable filmography

By now, most of us have seen Bong Joon-ho's dark comedic thriller about class differences – it won an Oscar after all). But embedded within the story of the impoverished Kim family infiltrating the home of the wealthy Parks is a key cameo by Park Seo-joon.

In the movie, Park plays Min-hyuk, the friend of the Kims' son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik). Min-hyuk is now a university student, his path to success has been set, and he does the Kims two favors. First, he gives them a scholar's rock, which promises the family wealth. He also provides the way into the Park family, recommending Ki-woo as his replacement as the English tutor for the Parks' daughter.

Fans of Park Seo-joon were delighted to catch him in such a cameo that, while brief, was impactful.  – Hanh Nguyen

What's significant about this 2018 rom-com series is that it was released just a year before "Parasite." Therefore, Park had filmed his key movie cameo in secrecy at the height of the show's popularity.

Based on a novel that was then turned into a webtoon, the 16-episode series stars Park as the privileged, arrogant and wealthy vice-chairman of a company, Lee Young-joon, who is thrown for a loop when his longtime secretary Kim Mi-so (Park Min-young) announces she'll be leaving his employ. Realizing how much he relied on her and feeling long-buried emotions that he has yet to identify, Young-joon sets out to try to keep her by his side, even if it means wooing her.

While Americans may find this an HR nightmare in the making , the series is nevertheless a charming showcase for Park Seo-joon's charisma and some serious business suit porn.  – H.N.

File this under your new Netflix recommendations row for Asian revenge, along with "Beef" and "The Glory."

In this 16-episode series based on a webtoon, Park Seo-joon plays Park Saeroyi, a man who carries out a decades-long revenge scheme against the Jangga Group founder, who had once employed Saeroyi's father before he was killed. The revenge involves . . . opening restaurants!

Although it's not one of Park's more dynamic performances – delayed vengeance is his personality, not to mention a bad bowl haircut  – the show is significant for its setting. The Itaewon district in Seoul is known as one of the most culturally diverse in South Korea, which also plays into the show's more inclusive casting and storytelling. It also famously holds an annual Halloween celebration (the location of last year's real-life tragic crowd crush ), which draws revelers from around the world and wows Saeroyi after he's newly released from prison, enough to inspire him to open his first restaurant there.  – H.N.

Before "Secretary Kim," Park honed his physical comedy chops with this 2017 action-comedy film about two students at the Korean National Police University who witness the kidnapping of a young woman, which leads to uncovering an unfertilized egg harvesting ring. (Yes, this is a comedy!)

Although they're not fully fledged police officers yet, they're determined to put a stop to the kidnappings and rescue the girls. Park is the brawn side of the pair, and there are the requisite training montages to support his role in the partnership. A fun time is had by all. – H.N.

This period drama boasts a star-studded cast – including k-pop idols BTS ' V aka Kim Tae-hyung and SHINee's Choi Minho – and revolves around a group of elite young warriors known as the Hwarang who come into their own during the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla (57 BC-935 AD).

Park sports a long, shaggy wig here – which could prep viewers for his flowing locks in "The Marvels" – and plays a young man born with less privilege who rises in the ranks of the Hwarang and harbors a huge secret. Besides friendships and power struggles, the series also offers a critique of the class system, which is an ongoing theme in k-dramas. – H.N.

If you've come this far, then you're really dedicated to checking out Park Seo-joon's back catalog. "Fight for My Way" is arguably one of his best roles in that it's a slice of life series that leans into all the things he does best: action, comedy and nuanced emotion.

In the series he plays Ko Dong-man among a group of four friends who are struggling to have their dreams of successful careers come true. Dong-man is a former taekwondo champ turned nameless MMA fighter after a major disappointment in his past.  – H.N.

In addition to starring in "The Marvels," Park is slated to star in "Dream," an upcoming sports comedy-drama feature about a football player who receives disciplinary provision and, as a result, must coach the national football team of ragtag individuals. Park will also star in the disaster-thriller "Concrete Utopia," based on a webtoon film about a group of earthquake survivors, and "Gyeongseong Creature," a horror series about a group of young survivalists who encounter a monster born of human greed.

Park Seo-Joon: ‘Some of my earliest memories are of me just trying to find my way.’

Park Seo Jun: ‘I actually couldn’t believe Marvel wanted to speak to me’

The actor talks about joining the MCU, his friendships with BTS’s V and the rest of the ‘Wooga Squad’, and the social and economic issues behind his TV hits Itaewon Class and Fight for My Way

I n an early scene of Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite , a brief conversation between rich student Min-hyuk and his friend Ki-woo proves a crucial moment in the multi-Oscar winning film. “Tutor a rich kid. It pays well,” the scooter-riding Min-hyuk tells the impoverished Ki-woo, who lives in a semi-basement home with his family. And when Min-hyuk offers Ki-woo the opportunity to take over his job as a tutor for the rich Park family, he acts as a bridge between the two worlds, and sets the plot of the film in motion.

Min-hyuk is played by Park Seo Jun, and despite the brevity of Park’s appearance in Parasite, it will have been the first time most international audiences will have got a good look at him. Park is a big name in South Korea however, thanks to a string of successful domestic TV series – mostly romantic comedies such as She Was Pretty and Fight for My Way – and the Netflix hit Itaewon Class . Now his international profile is about to be raised, after it was confirmed he will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Captain Marvel 2: The Marvels, appearing alongside Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Zawe Ashton, making him the third South Korean actor to join the MCU.

“When I first heard that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to speak with me, I couldn’t believe it. I actually couldn’t believe it,” Park says. He remains tight-lipped over the actual details, however. “I’m just trying to be careful with Marvel-related questions,” he laughs, looking a bit stressed. It’s no surprise, MCU actors are sworn to secrecy. “I’m not someone who has a fear of challenges, but whether I am filming in South Korea or abroad, everything is a challenge for me. So, I did feel some nerves at first. But everyone was so helpful and welcoming that I was able to find my feet really quickly.”

Park as Min-hyuk in Parasite.

On the day we speak, Park is in Seoul, having just got back from filming in London. He looks lively in a green bomber jacket and denim shirt, and is happy to start talking before his LA-based management joins the call to monitor any sensitive Marvel information. “I didn’t come from a wealthy family and we had to move around a lot as a result, but I was able to meet a lot of different people at school and that made me more mature.” He pauses. “Some of my earliest memories from childhood are of me just trying to find my way, instead of memories of being happy all the time.”

The themes of Korean social inequality and financial difficulties that Parasite so brilliantly exposed have also found their way into Park’s other work. In the 2017 series Fight for My Way, Park played a taekwondo athlete, Ko Dong-man, who is forced to cancel his dreams of going to the Olympics after being burdened by his family debts and his sister’s life-changing surgery. Dong-man quits his dream and becomes a pest exterminator. “People in their 20s in South Korea are actually having a lot of difficulties, when it comes to just living in general,” Park says. “During my early days of acting, it was very difficult for me. In your 20s you have to work really hard but also be careful with everything. Life, love, career, passion – everything. Fight for My Way was one of the best dramas that could possibly portray these feelings. I could connect with Dong-man. At times, he failed and got frustrated with himself but he endured and showed up for himself. Among all the young people who were struggling, I got to express one young person’s hardships.”

Park with Kim Da-mi in Itaewon Class

In Itaewon Class, Park plays an ex-convict. On the surface it’s a story about revenge and retribution but it also features strong social commentary about how the rich abuse power. It was an instant success. “Itaewon Class appeared in the midst of the Korean movies and drama boom, and I got to make a lot of international fans,” says Park. It was only a matter of time before the world woke up to the world of Korean film and TV, the actor believes. Netflix and other streaming platforms gave international audiences access to these projects, and he says the Korean entertainment industry offered something new. “I personally feel that South Korea has been making a lot of effort and spending a lot of time creating good quality films and series, but it’s always been a bit of a hidden gem. There are a lot of good films and dramas and I want them to be recognised. I feel proud that I am able to contribute to this Korean boom.”

Park is also part of Wooga Squad (“I don’t know why we named it that; it just happened”), a friendship group with actor Choi Woo-Shik (who starred as Ki-woo in Parasite), BTS member V, actor Park Hyung-sik and artist Peakboy. “They are really good friends to me and very comforting,” Park says. It appears they help him deal with the intense pressure on Korean actors and “idols”. “Not only do we share the same values, thoughts and perspectives on things but we are in similar industries, and so we are able to share advice. We try to comfort each other as human beings, because what I am going through could be something that the others might go through in the future.”

I ask him what he does to relax. “I haven’t found the solution to that one yet!” he says. I tell him I picked up crocheting to help cope during the early days of the pandemic. A little puzzled at what I am attempting to act out, he turns to the interpreter. “Crocheting?” But once he realises what I am recommending, he laughs. “OK, I’ll try it!”

The Marvels: Who Is Park Seo-joon Playing?

I n April 2023, Marvel Studios released the first full-length trailer for The Marvels — the Carol Danvers-helmed ensemble film that’s serving as “Captain Marvel 2,” so to speak. Brie Larson returns as Carol, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, the ex-Air Force pilot-turned-superhero, but this time the human-Kree hybrid is joined by other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) heroes with extraordinary powers: Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who fans last saw getting her cells rewritten in 2021’s WandaVision , and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a Captain Marvel superfan who becomes the body-morphing hero Ms. Marvel in her 2022 self-titled Disney Plus miniseries.

But they aren’t the only preexisting Marvel Comics characters who figure into Captain Marvel’s next outing. Directed by Nia DaCosta ( Candyman , Little Woods ), The Marvels film will see Carol, Monica, and Kamala navigating a destabilized universe, a wormhole, Kree revolutionaries, and, above all else, their powers becoming entangled to form the titular team. Marvel’s 33rd cinematic feature film also marks the MCU debut of South Korean actor Park Seo-joon ( Parasite , Fight for My Way ). So, who is Park Seo-joon playing in The Marvels and the larger MCU ?

Who Is Prince Yan In Marvel Comics?

Fans of K-dramas have wondered for some time, “Is Park Seo-joon in Marvel?” In fact, the actor wondered that himself, telling The Guardian in a 2022 interview that he was in disbelief when Marvel Studios reached out to him. Although Park revealed his involvement with the MCU a while ago, details about his character were scarce. After much fan speculation, the latest trailer for The Marvels seems to have answered the question of who Park Seo-joon is playing in the MCU.

In the trailer for The Marvels , Park wears a regal-looking outfit and brandishes a sword, which, for Captain Marvel diehards, pretty much confirmed he would play Yan, the Prince of Aladna. This aligns pretty well with the rumors swirling around the film, which claim The Marvels will take some inspiration from Captain Marvel Vol 8, #9 , which features Aladna — a planet with inhabitants who speak entirely in rhymes. The rumor? The Marvels will end up on Aladna and be forced to communicate in song form.

What Role Could Yan Play In The Marvels?

In the comics, Yan plays a somewhat small role. Captain Marvel visits Aladna, where Prince Yan is struggling with his culture’s marriage practice. On Aladna, women choose their spouses — and men have to oblige. Lila Cheney, a mutant singer with the power of intergalactic teleportation, ends up on Aladna as a kid and decides to become engaged to the young prince. Years later, Lila returns to the planet, and, for the native people, the engagement is still very much real.

Anything but enthused, Lila teleports herself onto Captain Marvel’s ship and asks Carol to help her stop the wedding. The plan? Carol will object to the union, hopefully ridding both Lila and Yan of the marriage contract neither of them want. Unfortunately, a conquest-minded alien named Marlo shows up, eager to seize control of the planet by marrying Yan. When Marlo decides to fight Lila for Yan’s hand in marriage, Carol steps in to fight in the mutant’s place. After she defeats Marlo, Captain Marvel — Yan’s rightful bride-to-be — gives Prince Yan the right to choose his future spouse. In the end, Yan’s first act as ruler is to abolish the whole archaic, nonconsensual practice.

Given Lila Cheney’s prominence in the issue, it sounds like this story was pulled from New Mutants or another X-Men variation, but it’s very much a Captain Marvel volume. So, will Prince Yan find himself entangled in an unwanted engagement in this upcoming MCU film ? It’s hard to imagine The Marvels would introduce Lila Cheney since the film’s roster is pretty full already.

Fans have speculated that the MCU Disney Plus series Secret Invasion , which debuts in June 2023, will set up the events of The Marvels . As comic-book readers know, the Secret Invasion storyline follows Nick Fury and co. as they try to stop a Skrull invasion of Earth. Given Captain Marvel’s long-standing history with both the Skrull and Kree, the idea that this will all tie together seems well-founded.

With so much ground to cover, it’s hard to imagine all the action will unfold on Aladna. According to the movie’s official synopsis, Carol finds herself heading into a strange wormhole “linked to a Kree revolutionary,” so it’s possible The Marvels will do some planet-hopping, or space-time travel. With three protagonists to balance — Carol Danvers; Captain Marvel superfan Kamala Khan; and S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Monica Rambeau, who also happens to be Carol’s estranged niece — Prince Yan might be more of a side character. Still, it will be exciting for fans of both the talented actor and the ever-growing MCU to see Park Seo-joon in The Marvels .

After many delays and schedule changes, Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels is set to premiere exclusively in theaters on November 10, 2023.

The Marvels: Who Is Park Seo-joon Playing?

Who Is Park Seo-joon, a.k.a. Prince Yan from 'The Marvels'?

The K-drama star is making his Hollywood debut in the MCU's latest flick.

The MCU's sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel is finally out in theaters, bringing together the titular hero played by Brie Larson and two fan-favorites from Marvel's Disney+ shows—Iman Vellani's Ms Marvel and Teyonah Parris's Monica Rambeau—in the franchise's first-ever all-female superhero team-up. In addition to the leading trio of superheroes, Korean drama fans have also been excited to see a major K-drama actor to make his U.S. film debut. As details of the film's plot emerged closer to its November 10 release, fans deduced that Park Seo-joon would play supporting character Prince Yan, who shares a connection to Carol Danvers and even appears in a musical number in the action flick.

Though American audiences may not be familiar with Park Seo-joon, the acclaimed actor is a superstar in his native South Korea, and he's already appeared in an Oscar-winning film. If The Marvels is the first time you're seeing him, read on to learn more about the actor.

He's a leading Korean actor and Chanel ambassador.

Park was born on December 16, 1988, and made his debut as an actor in 2011, appearing in Bang Yong-guk's music video "I Remember." He's gone on to star in several hit K-dramas including A Witch's Love ; Kill Me, Heal Me ; She Was Pretty ; Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, Fight for My Way, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?, and Itaewon Class. The Marvels is his first major Hollywood film. He's next set to star in the Netflix action drama Gyeonseong Creature, as well as the dystopian drama film Concrete Utopia— which Deadline reports has been selected as South Korea's entry for the Best International Feature Film category for the 2024 Oscars .

In addition to his acting work, Park has served as an ambassador of Chanel Beauty for the past few years, making appearances at several of the fashion house's events. He has also worked as a singer, contributing several songs to soundtracks earlier in his career.

You may already know him from an Oscar-winning film.

Though K-drama fans have known of Park for years, U.S. movie fans likely first met him through his brief role in Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning movie Parasite . Park appeared at the beginning of the film as Min-hyuk, the rich family friend who told Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) about the tutoring job for the wealthy Park family, setting off the wild plot. Though he didn't join the Parasite cast on the U.S. awards show circuit, he did follow along on Instagram, where he shared sweet posts gushing over his co-stars.

He was cast in 'The Marvels' because of his performance in 'Itaewon Class.'

During an press conference earlier this month, The Marvels director Nia DeCosta revealed how she ended up casting Park in the film. Per The Korea Herald , she told the outlet that during the pandemic lockdowns, she rediscovered her love of K-dramas thanks to Park's 2020 drama Itaewon Class ( which is available to stream on Netflix) .

“I was really into Korean dramas, films and K-pop when I was younger at 17, 18, and I just fell in love with this Korean pop culture. I watched a lot of variety shows as well,“ she said. “I hadn’t watched many Korean dramas in years, but it was during the pandemic that I watched I taewon Class . Months after watching that drama, I got this job [to direct The Marvels] and I thought Prince Yan’s character really fits him. So we reached out to see if it worked, and it did.”

She added of Park, “He is a great actor with great energy and he is very funny. Everyone fell in love with him on set...His screen time is short, but he is a very impactful character throughout the storyline.”

In a 2022 The Guardian interview, Park said of the Marvel gig, “When I first heard that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to speak with me, I couldn’t believe it. I actually couldn’t believe it.” He added, “I’m not someone who has a fear of challenges, but whether I am filming in South Korea or abroad, everything is a challenge for me. So, I did feel some nerves at first. But everyone was so helpful and welcoming that I was able to find my feet really quickly.”

He's part of a famous friend squad with BTS's V.

Outside of his work in the drama world, Park is also known for his friendship with one of the members of the biggest pop group in the world. He's part of the "Wooga Squad," a famous group of besties that also includes actors Choi Woo-shik and Park Hyung-sik, and rapper and producer Peakboy. Seo-joon met V and Hyung-sik when they acted in the 2016 drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth , and he went on to introduce the two to Choi and Peakboy, with whom he was already friends. After years of sharing Instagram posts and YouTube vlogs from their friend trips, the fivesome immortalized their squad in the Disney+ reality show In the Soop: Friendcation .

In addition to In the Soop: Friendcation , Park Seo-joon, V, and Choi Woo-shik also appeared on another Korean variety show together. Park had been a long-running member of the show Youn's Kitchen , where a group of actors operate a Korean restaurant in a small town. He first starred in the Canary Islands-based Youn's Kitchen 2 —alongside Lee Seo-jin, Jung Yu-mi, and Oscar-winner Youn Yuh-jung—and later returned for the spinoff Youn's Stay , where Choi joined the cast as they ran a traditional Korean guesthouse. This year, he, Lee, Jung, Choi, and V hosted the spin-off Jinny's Kitchen , where they opened a Korean street food restaurant in Bacalar, Mexico. ( Jinny's Kitchen is currently available to stream on Prime Video .)
