Gene simmons announces ace frehley as support for australian tour.

ace frehley australian tour

Simmons shared the news during his current US tour, revealing that he’ll be joined by Frehley for five rescheduled Australian shows.

“He’s going to be using my back-up band and we’re just going to have a great time,” said Simmons. “He’ll play ‘Ozone’ and lots of other crazy stuff.”

The KISS guitarist also mentioned his recent reunions with other bandmates including Peter Criss and Vinnie Vincent, but noted with a laugh that he hasn’t convinced Paul Stanley just yet.

Simmons announced his Australian tour in October last year, later rescheduling the dates for August instead. Find your nearest rescheduled show here:

Tuesday August 28:  Entertainment Centre Theatre, Adelaide, SA

Thursday August 30:  Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne, VIC

Friday August 31:  Enmore Theatre, Sydney, NSW

Ace Frehley to Join Gene Simmons for Australian Tour

They've certainly had their ups and downs, but it looks like Gene Simmons and his former Kiss bandmate Ace Frehley have enjoyed their recent reunions. In fact, Frehley will join Simmons for a series of upcoming tour dates in Australia.

Those dates, which Simmons announced during a solo Vault Experience show that was captured via the fan-filmed footage you can watch below, follow a spate of appearances with former Kiss members.

Simmons and Frehley ended a 16-year break between stage collaborations last year, and their subsequent reunions have included the first Vault Experience tour date, which also featured Frehley's fellow ex-Kiss vets Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer. The Kulick connection will continue later this year, when Frehley appears with brothers Bruce and Bob at the Indiana Kiss Expo as well as the 2018 Kiss Kruise .

It's all part of what seems to be an era of hatchet-burying for Simmons, whose famously blunt dismissal of some of his former bandmates has taken a recent backseat for recent reunions. In addition to playing with Frehley, Simmons also appeared with former Kiss drummer Peter Criss at a Vault Experience show on March 24; next month, he'll share a Vault appearance bill with ex-Kiss guitarist Vinnie Vincent when the tour comes to Nashville .

For fans who've watched various past and present Kiss members feud over the years, it's encouraging and not a little bit surprising — albeit not as surprising as Simmons' recent decision to join a Canadian cannabis company as their "chief evangelical officer." Although he's always been outspoken about his anti-drug views, Simmons admitted he was "not informed" about the benefits of cannabis, adding, "in the past, I used to dismiss lots of things because of ignorance and arrogance."

Ace frehley.

As a fan of KISS for 36 years, you can imagine the excitement of having the opportunity to speak to my number one musical influence, Ace Frehley, ahead of his Australian tour in support of fellow KISS legend Gene Simmons, commemorating 40 years since the release of his solo album. Here’s what transpired… Taking the call from his home recording studio in Rancho, Santa Fe, California, I was quick to let him know he was talking to a true fanboy which was followed by a humble laugh from Ace. “This is a great band that I was a co-founder of,” he raves. “Who knows what’s going to happen in the future? My relationship with Paul [Stanley] and Gene now at this juncture is better than it’s ever been, so if something is gonna happen down the road, I would say it’s gonna happen in the next year or so… maybe sooner.” This is of course good news to Kiss fans who would love to see the Spaceman back in the make up! Talk of the future leads to Ace giving the word on a new record will surface in the next few months, which is expected to include his new single ‘Bronx Boy’, and the two songs he co-wrote last summer with Simmons. “I’ve been listening to it [the album] and I’ve played it for a dozen people whose opinions I really value, and they think it is one of my best albums to date,” he reveals. “I was gonna call the album 40 Years Later because 1978 is 40 years ago, and that’s when I came out with my first solo album. “Gene and I were in Miami at one of those conventions he has where he sells the vaults and signs it,” he continues, explaining that they performed to the fans and asked for name suggestions before Gene intervened on the open discussion and said ‘No, you’ve gotta call it Spaceman!’ “Everybody went their own way,” he continues, referring to 1978. “I pretty much did that whole 1978 solo album with Eddie Kramer and Anton Fig on drums. It was wonderful working with them.” After sharing the fact we had trodden the same stage at the Agora Theatre in Cleveland, soon enough I confessed that he was one of the main reasons I picked up the guitar to, which he just chuckles. “I never heard that one before,” before explaining, “even though I’ve been hearing it for 25 years, it’s still very flattering that somebody tells me they picked up the guitar because of me. “What’s better than playing guitar, you know?” As for the upcoming tour, Ace confirmed he’ll be performing ‘Rocket Ride’ when he tours alongside Gene Simmons this August, along with fan favourites including ‘Cold Gin’, ‘Shock Me’ and some KISS classics such as ‘Love Gun’ and ‘Deuce’. It would seem the fans are going to be in for a treat! As for the Spaceman himself, Ace leads a busy lifestyle. With lots of interests (including computer animation and computer graphics) but not a whole lot of time, Ace still finds time for those who mean the most. “Between touring and recording, Rachel (Gordon, fiancée) likes to hit to Las Vegas with me, and sometimes we go to Mexico and just lay on the beach for a couple of weeks because she helps me relax,” he says. “She’s smart enough to realise that you have to balance your lifestyle and take vacations.” And whilst Ace had a reputation of recklessness for some time, things have clearly changed. “The whole thing is balance. I’m healthier now than I’ve ever been in my life; probably because I haven’t had a drink in 12 years and it’s really helped me focus and perform better, and play better, and it’s just wonderful,” he reveals. “I don’t like to preach to people, but what I do get when I have VIP signings and I go to conventions, I have a lot of guys come up to me and tell me ‘You know Ace, I got sober because of you. I had car accidents, got arrested, and I have been sober for a couple of years, and you were the catalyst that made me make the decision to do that’. It’s wonderful that I can have a positive influence on my fans.” It’s his aforementioned relationship with Gene and Paul that’s truly stood the test of time, with Ace revealing it’s the best it’s ever been. “That was a long time coming. I think for the longest time they maybe didn’t believe I was 100 per cent sober because for years you know, I was a party animal. Ironically, even when I was drinking and doing drugs and I quit the band, they still begged me not to leave, because I did deliver, even under the influence. “But now I’m better than ever,” he continues. “I’m playing and singing better than ever I was in my 20’s and 30’s, and I think they recognise that. I’ve got a clean bill of health.” Now the founding KISS guitarist, solo artist, and 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is bringing that clean bill of health back to Australia. “I’ve never counted how many times I’ve been to Australia, but it must be at least half a dozen,” he reveals. “I was there opening up for Alice Cooper last year; that was great. I’ve known Alice forever. I’m actually one of the few people that got drunk with Alice. He’s been sober 25 years or more, but I can still remember in the 70’s chucking down some Budweisers with Alice Cooper on his birthday… That’s a fond memory, and not everybody could say that.” When & Where: Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne – August 30. Ace Frehley

ace frehley australian tour

From Release: Gene Simmons welcomes former KISS band mate Ace Frehley as very special guest star on his forthcoming Australian tour, celebrating the milestone of 40 years since the release of his self-titled solo album.  Ace Frehley is a founding member of KISS, a musical maverick and iconoclast adored by millions of fans around the world. Ace played on the classic KISS albums from 1973 to 1981 before reuniting with the band from 1996 to 2001.  Ace was responsible for many of the band’s biggest hits including Talk To Me, New York Groove, 2,000 Man, Rocket Ride, Shock Me and more.

In his home studio in California, Ace Frehley gave us a call to talk about his return to Australia with Gene Simmons, yes, Gene Simmons, new music, anniversaries, reunions, and much more…

Ace, it’s been four years since we last chatted, so let’s catch up, how have the last four years been for you? Pretty busy, I’ve been to Australia once on tour with myself, once I opened for Alice Cooper, God that was a rough tour, we did eight shows in nine days *laughs* it was a pretty crazy schedule. That was more insane than anything I ever did with KISS I can tell you that.

Really? Mmm hmm, and as you know I’m coming back to Australia for four shows with Gene… Simmons.

Of course, and it’s something many people never thought could happen, how did this come about? It was a slow process of reconnecting, this year I’m celebrating twelve years sober, you know when I parted company with Paul and Gene the last time and decided to leave the band again I was using drugs and alcohol and it took a long time for me to get back on track and in 2006 I got sober and it took them probably a long time to realise because they’ve known me since my twenties and I’ve been drinking since my twenties *laughs*. So it took them a long time to realise that I was serious about sobriety and I was someone who could be dependable. They got good report cards from everyone I’ve worked with over the years and I think they realised when I contacted them and wanted to start reconnecting and doing stuff together you know, like me and Paul collaborated on a song on my last record ‘Fire and Water’ and he was kind enough to do a video shoot with me, and then more recently me and Gene Simmons collaborated on two songs on my new upcoming album that’s gonna be released in a couple of months. Then I’ve been doing events with Gene because I’m his only friend did you know that? *laughs* You know that Gene always says in interviews that he has no friends and I get pissed off because I email Gene and say ‘you know I’m your buddy’, we used to be roommates before we really made it big and each of us would get our own suites. Prior to that he was my roommate for several years *laughs* what a riot, right?

ace frehley australian tour

Now you talked about new music and you released ‘Bronx Boy’ a couple of months back, what can we expect from it? You know everybody who’s heard it and a lot of people’s opinions I respect have heard it and think it’s one of my best albums to date, ever. The songs that me and Gene collaborated on came out fantastic, I wrote a really cool instrumental that Warren Huart who mixed the record and co-produced it with me and he actually played a little guitar on it. There’s a couple of songs that I revised and rewrote that Anton Fig is playing drums on and as you probably know Anton Fig was known for playing drums on all my earlier solo records and especially my 1978 debut solo record with ‘New York Groove’. Life is great, life is great, I just turned 67 in April but I don’t look 67 I probably look ten years younger at least that’s what the ladies tell me *laughs*. My energy level, I dropped since I toured South America last year I’ve dropped thirty five pounds so I’m ready for anything, if I’ve gotta slip into a space suit I’m ready to go *laughs*.

Let’s talk anniversaries as this September in line with the tour here is the 40 th Anniversary of the KISS solo albums, can you take us back to that time and what you remember about making your solo album? Well I had a ball doing my solo album back in 1978, pretty much I was just talking to a couple of friends of mine we’re working on another project this weekend and I was just telling them how easy it was to do that record, it was just me, Eddie Kramer my producer who produced Alive 1, 2 and 3, and Anton Fig on drums. I played all the guitars, did all the vocals, played bass on seven out of nine songs and Anton played all the drums. I wrote all the songs except for ‘New York Groove’ and it was an easy process. You know that saying too many chefs in the kitchen… it applies to the recording studio, the less people in the studio when you’re working the more work you get accomplished if you know what you’re doing. I’m completely happy with just me and an engineer playing all the parts and nobody else in the room.

Well I love yours, it came out great! Thank you very much, a lot of guitar players have sited that record as kind of their rock and roll bible and that’s how they learned to play guitar. I’m the same way with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Pete Townsend, The Stones, The Who, you know, but every generation is different and it’s amazing how many guitarists come to me and bring up my ’78 record and they bring up the ‘Alive’ album as how they learned to play guitar by copying my stuff. I’m very flattered by that but at the same token I got my style from the guys before me that’s kind of the way it works it’s an ongoing process *laughs* depending upon your age group.

The legacy of KISS is truly something to behold, how would you personally want KISS to be remembered? Well we came up with probably the biggest and best rock and roll show in history, and I don’t think anybody’s ever topped it. I think probably the best way KISS will be remembered is if Paul and Gene decide to take me back into the fold and we end up doing a bigger and better show and go out that way on top. That’s what I think should happen but basically since I quit the group a couple of times it’s not my place to say how it’s gonna end, it’s up to Paul and Gene. I think that would probably be the best option for KISS to be remembered for KISS to go out on top with the original line up.

Well hopefully we’ll see it again, you never know… You never know, it’s something that the fans I think want and constantly mention on the internet and I look to what my fans say because they pay my salary you know? *laughs* My fans buy my records and come to my concerts, so I don’t have a deaf ear to what they say, I listen to what they say and I think it’s important that any rock and roll artist does that.

After playing music for well over forty years now, is there anything left to do or that you want to do that you haven’t already done? Yeah there’s a couple of things I’d like to do I’d like to produce some younger groups once my schedule slows down because I think I’m a good producer and a good song writer. I’d like to score a sci-fi film or something like a Marvel film, I’ve never scored a movie so that would be great, and I’d also like to do a documentary just on me and how I grew up as just a middle class kid from The Bronx and by the time I was in my mid-twenties I was in one of the biggest rock and roll bands in the world and that’s a pretty amazing story, I’ve talked about it in many interviews I bring it up in my book but I’ve never told the whole story.

Lastly, let’s try and predict the remainder of the year, so if you can finish this sentence for me, by the end of 2018, Ace Frehley will… I think by the end of 2018 I think we will probably start formulating a plan for a KISS reunion, at least that’s what I’d like to happen and I think the fans would like that and I also have plan B you know, you know when you think about Eric Clapton and what he did after he left Cream he formulated a group Blind Faith with a lot of other superstars, so in the event there isn’t a KISS reunion I’m probably gonna put together a super group of people that are equal to my talent and notoriety and go out that way. Playing arenas, but either way I’m gonna be OK, I’m making great records and I’m selling out wherever I perform for the most part and I’m having a ball doing it you know? If I could go out with KISS that would be probably the best option at this juncture but it’s not my decision at this point, but like I said me, Paul and Gene have been communicating more and more and more and I think we’re leaning towards that direction but there’s nothing written in stone at this point. It’s a pipe dream.

Well for now we can’t wait for the shows here with Gene… I can’t wait to come back to Australia, always have fun in Australia it’s a great country.

See you then, thanks Ace! Thank you very much, bye bye.

Ace Frehley’s role as the guitarist of Kiss has been an ostensible characteristic of his career. His persona “Spaceman” is recognized as a near interchangeable description of this idiosyncratic guitarist; however, outside the megalomania surrounding Kiss he forged a solo career quite worthy of attention.

Paul Daniel Frehley was born on 27 April 1951 in New York City, New York, United States. He was raised in the Bronx amongst two older siblings and was immersed in a musical background. Both his parents played the piano (his father even acted as the church organist) and his brother and sister likewise played the piano and guitar. Though Frehley did not receive any technical training he was an avid learner of the guitar. He acquired his 1st guitar when he was 13 years old and taught himself how to play, guided by the influences of B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the Who etc...

As a teenager Frehley was wild and prone to commotion. He was involved in several street gangs, got kicked out of two high schools and dropped out of a 3rd. However with the insistence of his parents he got his diploma and landed several part time jobs. Despite the chaos Frehley was wrapped up in his youth, he always reserved a dedication to music and he credits his drive as an artist as the source of his “salvation” from delinquency.

Before joining Kiss Frehley played guitar in the groups Cathedral and Molimo. He was eventually directed by an ad in the Village Voice to audition for the band Wicked Lester, which at that time consisted of Gene Simons, Paul Stanley, and Pete Criss. The members were not too thrilled with Frehley’s apparently dis-shelved appearance, but were impressed by his musical technique. A couple weeks after the audition Frehley was given the position and by the start of 1973 the group changed their name to Kiss. During the beginning stages of the group Frehley could not sustain himself solely as a musician so he picked up an extra job, working as a cab driver.

This would all change after the release of Kiss’ smash self-titled debut. Frehley was responsible for penning the classic track “Cold Gin” and also co-wrote the “Love Theme from KISS”. He continued to contribute compositions to Kiss’ discography and made his singing debut on the track “Shock Me”.

Though Frehley’s departure from Kiss did not take place until 1982 he released his first self-titled debut album in 1978. The other members of Kiss also released solo albums that year; however, Frehley’s work outsold everyone else’s. His debut also received high critical praise and is still regarded as an influential record, generating positive feedback from modern publications like Allmusic and Pitchfork.

Frehley pursued his solo career full force in 1984, recruiting the help of Anton Fig (drums), John Regan (bass), Richie Scarlet (vocals/guitars), and Arthur Stead (keyboardist). His solo project alternated between the names Ace Frehley and Frehley’s Comet. The band recorded multiple demos and played several live shows from 1984 to1985, but did not release their first album “Frehley’s Comet” until 1987. The album was a success, entering the Billboard 200 at No. 43. It’s single “Into the Night” peaked at No. 27 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and “Rock Soldiers” also received heavy airplay. Frehley put out two more albums under the moniker Frehley’s Comet: “EP Live+1” and “Second Sighting”. During this time he supported these releases by touring with Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden.

His 3rd full length album “Trouble Walkin’” was released under Ace Frehley and hit the shelves on 13 October 1989. Drummer Pete Kriss and Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach both made appearances on the album. Frehley and Kriss rejoined Kiss in 1996 for a reunion tour and also contributed to the album “Psycho Circus”.

Frehley did not release his follow up to “Trouble Walkin’” until 20 years later. His 5th studio album was titled “Anomaly” and peaked at No. 27 on the US Billboard. In 2011 he put out the autobiography “No Regrets - A Rock ‘N’ Roll Memoir” and three years later issued his 6th studio album “Space Invader”, which climbed all the way to No. 9 on the US Billboard charts.

Live reviews

This show was a spectacular birthday gift from my wife, though she is not into real music....so I attended this awesome rock extravaganza by myself.

It was at The Rose in Pasadena, CA. The opening bands, The Hots and Like It were painfully average and not memorable whatsoever. They were simply filler/time-killers before the badass Ace Frehley and his new killer backing band, whom he hired away from Gene Simmons, came out. They were spectacular and on-point aka they play the old songs correctly with zeal, fun, and passion.

Ace's onstage banter was sarcastic, funny, and factual, as he explained how he used to party too hard and too often, what the origins of certain songs were, what KISS songs he actually wrote, etc.

The songs played were old-school, catchy, and intense. He started the show with "Rocket Ride", and continued with hits like "Cold Gin", "New York Groove", "Rock Soldiers", "Snowblind", "Shock Me", "Detroit Rock City", and more!

I was able to talk with Jeremy from the band after the show, though the area where I was standing was for "V I.P.'s"....Jeremy, I am sure, had the option to tell me to go away since I didn't fork out the cash to stand there and chit-chat, but he treated me like a true fan of "our" music, and a guy he could have a beer with, with respect and a genuine interest in our brief conversation. He explained how Ace had jammed out of the venue like a real rock star, straight to the limo lol.

I tried all night to get one of Ace's guitar picks, as he chucked them into the crowd during and between songs, but was unable to get one. But, Jeremy, being the cool guy that he was, gave me one since it was my birthday! A very kind move, to say the least.

The Rose is a great venue for a fun and energetic rock show, check it out!

Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley, is probably best known for being the lead guitarist in the band Kiss as “The Spaceman”. Tonight, however it is all about Frehley’s own songs. He is after all a fantastic guitarist who has had a very successful career in his own right not to mention that his album “Frehley’s Comet” which was essentially a crossover album of hard rock and pop metal, sold half a million units but only reached 43 in the billboard charts. His solo album aptly titled “Ace Frehley” achieved Platinum status in the US and Gold in Canada. Tonight he is due to bring a slew of huge hits that made a name for him.

He opens the set with “Into the Night”, the rifftastic introduction sets the pace for what is going to be a fun fuelled set, with a huge party vibe, after all, most people here know this musician through the hit band KISS. He is not ashamed of his beginnings as he uses the Gibson Les Paul that he is so famous for and even does that smoke effect that he did in KISS! The crowd goes absolutely wild for it. “Do Ya” is such a huge hit for the band, keeping them happy, and keeping them excited for what is to come throughout the set. “Outer Space” was one of the songs which was surprisingly successful with this audience too.

Many people do not realise that Kiss's very own 'space man' has his own solo career and a hefty live following. Now in his 60s, Paul Daniel Frehley often juggles his commitments with the glam rock legends to head out accompanied by his own band for some truly rousing shows.

The guitarist has musical skills second to none and although Kiss are known for theatrics and costume, when you strip everything down to the bare instrumentals it is equally impressive. The setlist is divided between tracks lifted from his own solo releases and some of Kiss's most popular tracks. The mixture is great as fans get to hear another side to this rock legend with tracks including 'Breakout' and 'Rip It Out' along with the sing/jump-along of 'Love Gun'. There are numerous highlights throughout the night yet Ace totally steals the show shortly before his finale with a blistering guitar solo that lasts many minutes and has the whole venue screaming and cheering in equal elation and amazement. Kiss may be an incredible band yet you cannot forget Frehley is a truly unforgettable musician.

Ace Frehley is currently touring the North East USA. Last night he and his band mates ROCKed the 9:30Club in Washington DC. THIS VENUE....while it is small it is a Great Place. The current band line up is the strongest I have seen yet. Ace put on a fantastic show and his band mates certainly added punch to the music. Ace was better than I have seen him in a long time....and having an Awesome crew behind you makes it even all the more incredible....Outstanding show! Even the opening band: Charm City Devils Rocked!

The show was great! Although two fans were arrested for public intoxication prior to the show but I think the husband let his wife go to jail because he ended up at the concert. Needless to say everyone kept pushing him out of the way, including me. That part was entertaining!

I had the Meet-N-Greet with Ace and he was just great! We were able to sit in the tour bus with him for a while and just BS with him while he signed pictures etc. It was just great!

The show was great. Some mishaps like closing the lights down then waiting 10 minutes for the band to come on and house music playing while the bass player was soloing. Other than those few things, everything was spot on. They played for 2 hours. Over 20 songs. Ace did have some jokes about the other original KISS members which wasn't necessary but I over looked it.

ACE FREHLEY To Release New Solo Album 10,000 VOLTS Next February, Drops Title Track

ace frehley australian tour

Grammy-nominated R&RHOF inductee and guitar legend ACE FREHLEY announces the release of his new studio album, 10,000 Volts , due out on February 23, 2024. Produced by Ace and Steve Brown ( Trixter ), the 11-track 10,000 Volts sees Ace perform electrifying, hard-hitting, riff-heavy rock’n’ roll.

As an appetiser he has released the first single and title track. Written and produced by Ace and Steve Brown, the track kicks off with a surging riff, and Ace’s swaggering delivery takes hold and never lets go. It culminates on the chantable chorus, “She hit me like 10,000 volts, when I saw her face,” giving way to a fret-burning guitar solo.

The accompanying visual for the single was directed by Alex Kouvatsos from Black Wolf Imaging and shows Ace and his band performing the powerful, riff-heavy track live.

ACE FREHLEY Announces 2024 U.S. Tour Dates

Ace Frehley has announced a run of U.S. tour dates for the first half of 2024.

The former KISS guitarist will play three shows at the end of the month — in Kentucky and Indiana — before taking part in the Monsters Of Rock cruise in early March. The end of March and early April will see Frehley play five East Coast shows, to be followed by an Illinois concert in June.

Tour dates:

Jan. 25 - Frankfort, KY - Grand Theatre Jan. 26 - Anderson, IN - Paramount Theatre Jan. 27 - Nashville, IN - Brown County Music Center March 2-6 - Miami, FL - Monsters Of Rock Cruise March 28 - New York, NY - Sony Hall March 29 - Woonsocket, RI - Stadium Theatre March 30 - Rutland, VT - Paramount Theatre April 12 - Rome, NY - Rome Capitol Theatre April 13 - Carteret, NJ - Carteret Performing Arts & Events Center June 28 - Marion, IL - Marion Cultural & Civic Center

Ace will release his new solo album, "10,000 Volts" , on February 23, 2024 via MNRK Music Group (formerly eOne Music ). The official music video for the LP's title track — directed by Alex Kouvatsos from Black Wolf Imaging — was released in late November.

Ace 's next all-original album will be the follow-up to "Spaceman" , which was released in October 2018 via eOne .

KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons co-wrote two tracks on "Spaceman" , "Without You I'm Nothing" and "Your Wish Is My Command" , the latter of which also features Gene 's bass playing.

Frehley , who co-founded KISS in 1973, left KISS twice — in 1982 and again in 2002.

When all four original KISS members concurrently released solo records in September 1978, Ace 's LP was the most successful, yielding the top 20 single "New York Groove".

In 2016, Frehley collaborated with KISS frontman Paul Stanley on a rendition of FREE 's "Fire And Water" . That track appeared on Frehley 's covers LP "Origins Vol. 1" , released that year.
