How to adblock Safari and Chrome on a Mac

David Price

Annoyed by online adverts and want to get rid of them? You’ve come to the right place. In this article we explain how to easily block adverts, popups, trackers and more on your Mac, using a variety of free and paid-for tools in the Safari and Chrome web browsers.

We have a separate guide if you specifically wish to block autoplay videos on Mac . And another for those who wish to block ads on iPhone or iPad .

Before we proceed, please bear in mind that the site whose adverts you’re blocking probably relies on revenue from advertising. That may not worry you, and we know that some of the online advertising out there really does cross a line in terms of intrusiveness. Just don’t complain if a site you love suddenly closes, or starts to charge visitors, because people refused to view its adverts.

Adblock in Safari

We’ll start with how to block adverts using Apple’s web browser, Safari. IN this article we have details of some third-party ad blockers that work with Safari but you don’t actually have to install a third party ad blocker to not see adverts in Safari – you can just set up Safari to block ads for you, here’s how:

Block ads in Safari using Reader mode

Strictly speaking, if you want to block adverts in Safari on the Mac you’ll need to install third-party ad-blocking software – and we’ll talk about that in a moment. But a far simpler approach is to use Safari’s built-in Reader mode, which is practically as good.

Reader isn’t quite an ad blocker, because it blocks a bunch of other visual distractions too: sidebars, mastheads, comments, social elements, videos. (It’s the same principle as the ‘Read later’ services we discuss at the end of this article.) You just get the text and the pictures, which can be a far calmer experience than some of the more visually ‘busy’ sites.

As a general rule, you can activate Reader mode at any time, although it’s not really possible on Home pages of sites that feature multiple stories and links.

There are a few different ways to enable the Reader mode. Here’s how to enable Reader mode in Safari:

  • Go to the menu bar at the top of the screen and select View > Show Reader
  • Hit Shift-Command-R.
  • Click the Reader button (the one with three and a half horizontal lines) next to the URL bar.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader

This will then strip the page down to its bare bones, leaving only the content behind.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader mode

From Safari 11 onwards it’s been possible to be more sophisticated and tell the browser to always open article pages from particular domains in Reader mode – or even to use Reader by default all the time.

Here’s how to set reader mode up for certain websites:

When you’re on a site you want to give this treatment, go to Safari > Settings for This Website (or you can right-click the URL box and choose Settings for This Website).

How to block ads on Mac: Use Reader when available

You can also remove domains from, and add them to, the Reader list in Safari’s Preferences page. Click on Safari > Preferences.

Click on the Websites pane.

Select Reader in the left-hand column.

You’ll see a list of all the websites currently open and any you have configured to use Reader. Select the website you want to default to Reader mode and click the menu to the right of it and select On (or Off if you don’t want it to use Reader mode).

How to use Reader mode all the time on Safari

You can actually set Reader mode to be the default option on any website that supports it! Here’s how:

  • As above go to Safari > Preferences and choose Reader.
  • At the bottom of this page you’ll see the option: ‘When visiting other websites’. Set this to On and Reader will be activated by default on all compatible web pages.

Note that if you have a website that is already defaulting to Off then you won’t see it in Reader mode.

How to block popup adverts in Safari

If popup ads are driving you mad then you can quickly put a stop to them. Since Safari 11 it’s been possible to block pop-up windows via Safari Preferences.

In Safari 12 and 13 here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Preferences.
  • Select the Websites tab.
  • Click on the Pop-up Windows option in the left-hand column.
  • Now you can either make a rule for the website you’re currently visiting by clicking on the drop down menu to the right of its name, or go to the bottom of the window and click on the drop-down menu next to ‘When visiting other websites’.
  • Then select either Block and Notify, Block, or Allow.

How to block ads on Mac: Block popups in Safari

Best ad blocker for Safari

Reader mode is a great solution, but if you want to block the adverts but leave the rest of the visual elements intact, you need to install a third-party ad blocker. There are lots of them out there, plenty of which are free, but tread carefully.

Our top recommendation is be the donation-ware Safari extension AdBlock, which deals with graphical ads, text ads and even ads in YouTube videos.

AdBlock also lets you whitelist pages on sites whose adverts you do want to see, to support them or because the ads may be useful. To whitelist the whole site you’ll need to upgrade to the AdBlock Gold level that costs £4.99/$4.99.

You can download AdBlock here .

If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, we recommend AdGuard . It comes in two forms: a free-to-use Safari extension and a £29/$30 app with a 14-day free trial. While the Safari extension is decent and acts in a similar way to AdBlock, the desktop app provides advanced features across macOS, not dependent on a particular browser.

As well as blocking ads and pop-ups from websites, you’re able to block tracking from most online sources and even be warned of malicious websites that you might stumble across online. It provides granular control over your ad blocking settings, allowing you to whitelist sites and self-promoting ads, and is incredibly simple to use.

You can download AdGuard here .

Best ad tracker blockers

Another pest online: trackers that follow your movements around the web to serve up ads. This is why you’ll be looking at a product on one site, then an ad for it magically appears when you visit another site.

To stop this intrusive (and frankly creepy) behaviour follow these steps:

Open up Safari and go to Preferences > Privacy and enable the ‘Prevent cross-site tracking’ option.

How to block ads on Mac: Ad tracker blockers in Safari

Block ads in Chrome on the Mac

Google’s Chrome browser is a popular alternative for Mac users, and even though Google is a full paid-up member of the advertising fan club, it allows plenty of scope for ad-blocking.

How to block Popups in Chrome

Let’s start by disabling popups, something which can be done from Chrome’s own settings – no need to install any extensions.

  • In Chrome select Chrome > Preferences.
  • Scroll down and click Advanced.
  • Below the heading ‘Privacy and security’, click the option Content settings.

How to block ads on Mac: Block popups in Chrome

Best Chrome ad blockers on the Mac

As with Safari, Chrome won’t actually block adverts for you – and there isn’t an easily accessed equivalent of Reader mode. (Google has publicly discussed something similar called Distill Mode, but there’s no straightforward way for Mac users to turn this on without recourse to extensions.)

Many well known ad blockers are browser-agnostic, fortunately. The two suggested above – AdBlock and AdGuard – are both able to deal with adverts in Chrome.

‘Read later’ services

If you decide you don’t want to install an ad blocker, an alternative solution is to use a read-later service. These are simple systems that let you easily save an article in a form that strips out the adverts; you can then read if later (or right away, for that matter) without being troubled by all the visual tomfoolery.

Our favourite such service is Pocket . Sign up to the service and you’ll be able to create a ‘Read later’ button as a bookmark in Safari, Chrome or whichever other browser you like.

Open an article, click the button and it’ll save to your account. You can then read the ad-free version online (from any machine) or, best of all in our experience, offline using the iPhone app .

I use the same ad blocker on my Mac. They don’t ask for weird permissions, and it works like a charm so I figured to use it on my phone as well. Really it’s a fantastic must have on both platforms. I have yet to see any ads slip past if I don’t want to see them.

it works perfectly. just download the app, open it, then go to your safari settings and turn the switches on. I've tested it and I'm not getting any ads. it's perfect!!

What to Know

  • Block or unblock an individual site by right-clicking on the address bar. Select the settings for that and click Enable Content Blockers .
  • To view all site settings, go to Safari > Preferences > Websites > Content Blockers to adjust each website in one list.
  • Content Blockers block ads and other unwanted content, but they may limit what you can see on a website.

This article teaches you how to turn off AdBlock on your Mac's preinstalled browser—Safari. It also helps you understand what AdBlock does when active.

Where Is the AdBlock Button on Mac?

There are two different methods of using AdBlock on your Mac. Both are within the default browser—Safari. Here's where to find it for individual websites and adjust it.

Open Safari on your Mac.

Right-click the address bar at the top of the screen.

Left-click Settings for website name.

Untick Enable content blockers to remove the Adblock feature from that particular site.

The site will now reload without the AdBlock feature enabled.

How Do I Disable AdBlock?

If you want to disable AdBlock across all websites on your Safari browser, the process is a little different. Here's where to look.

In Safari, click Safari .

Click Preferences .

Click Websites .

Click Content Blockers .

Click the name of the website you wish to switch the AdBlock or content blocker off on.

Click Remove .

The AdBlock is now removed.

What Does AdBlock Do?

Enabling the Content Blocker or AdBlock tool prevents ads such as pop-ups or banners from loading on websites you visit. It can also disable cookies and scripts that websites try to load.

Can I Use Other AdBlock Software?

Mac users are not restricted to using Safari's Adblock tool. It's also possible to download third-party apps or extensions. That means you can use adblocking software on other browsers such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Why Would I Enable or Disable AdBlock?

It's straightforward to switch AdBlock on or off through Safari, but it's important to know why it's worth using and why it's worth switching off sometimes. Here's a look at the main reasons.

  • AdBlock protects you from unwanted content . If you browse a website full of ads, you may want to avoid looking at them. Switching on AdBlock is helpful here.
  • AdBlock stops the website from benefiting from your visit . Ads on websites are there to provide limited funding in some places. Cutting off this form of income can make it more challenging for the website to operate.
  • AdBlock can limit the risk of malware. It's not widespread, but web ads can contain some browser exploits. More commonly, a site full of ads can confuse you into clicking on a link or an ad you didn't mean it. That's only the case with less reputable sites, though.
  • AdBlock improves the user experience. Some websites clutter their site with ads, making it a less enjoyable experience to browse and much harder to read the information contained on the page.

To enable cookies on Mac , go to Safari > Preferences > Privacy and uncheck Block all cookies . Enabling cookies allows your browser to store reusable data like email addresses or saved shopping cart items.

Install the AdBlock extension for Chrome to block ads on YouTube and other sites. To block pop-ups in Chrome , go to Settings > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects > Blocked .

You may need to clear your Mac's cache and cookies . If it's still not working, try disabling all your extensions except AdBlock.

How to watch the 2024 iPad event

adblock macbook pro safari

On April 23, Apple announced a special event scheduled for May 7, titled "Let Loose." The company also teased the event's focus with images of stylized Apple logos featuring a hand holding an Apple Pencil .

Apple has not updated the iPad lineup significantly since October 2022, aside from an Apple Pencil refresh in November 2023.

The 2024 iPad event is set to showcase the latest advancements and models in Apple's iPad series. It will be packed with announcements that include new hardware specifications, software features, and a glimpse into the future of iOS .

Rumors suggest that the iPad Pro might be outfitted with OLED displays, enhancing visual output with better color accuracy and energy efficiency. Additionally, a new M3 chip could be introduced with improved performance.

The iPad Air won't be left behind, though — it's expected to feature expanded size options and adopt mini-LED technology from its Pro counterpart. Enhanced Apple Pencil functionalities are also anticipated, which could revolutionize user interaction with the devices.

How to watch the "Let Loose" iPad event

You can catch the event live on Apple's website. Visit apple.com at the scheduled event time at 7:00am Pacific, 10:00am Eastern. For the best viewing experience, Apple recommends using Safari , but other major browsers like Chrome and Firefox will also support the livestream.

For an immersive experience, you can watch the event through the Apple TV app. The app is available on Apple devices and most smart TVs, streaming boxes, and gaming consoles. Additionally, subscribing to Apple's YouTube channel is a great way to get notified when the event goes live, and we'll embed the video here when we're able.

Apple's 2024 iPad event on May 7 will be a landmark occasion for technology enthusiasts. From the possible integration of OLED screens in the iPad Pro to the introduction of the M3 chip for enhanced performance, iPad users have upgrades to look forward to.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

Apple releases OpenELM, a slightly more accurate LLM

It's not the fastest machine learning model, but you can't have everything.

Apple, not normally known for its openness, has released a generative AI model called OpenELM which apparently outperforms a set of other language models trained on public data sets.

It's not by much – compared to OLMo , which debuted in February, OpenELM is 2.36 percent more accurate while using 2x fewer pretraining tokens. But it's perhaps enough to remind people that Apple is no longer content to be the wallflower at the industry AI rave.

Apple's claim to openness comes from its decision to release not just the model, but its training and evaluation framework.

"Diverging from prior practices that only provide model weights and inference code, and pre-train on private datasets, our release includes the complete framework for training and evaluation of the language model on publicly available datasets, including training logs, multiple checkpoints, and pre-training configurations," explain eleven Apple researchers in the associated technical paper .

And diverging from academic practice, the authors' email addresses are not listed. Chalk it up to Apple's interpretation of openness, which is somewhat comparable to the not-very-open OpenAI.

The accompanying software release is not a recognized open source license. It's not unduly restrictive, but it does make clear that Apple reserves the right to file a patent claim if any derivative work based on OpenELM is deemed to infringe on its rights.

OpenELM utilizes a technique called layer-wise scaling to allocate parameters more efficiently in the transformer model. So instead of each layer having the same set of parameters, OpenELM's transformer layers have different configurations and parameters. The result is better accuracy , shown in the percentage of correct predictions from the model in benchmark tests.

We're told that OpenELM was pre-trained using the RedPajama dataset from GitHub, a ton of books, Wikipedia, StackExchange posts, ArXiv papers, and more, and the Dolma set from Reddit, Wikibooks, Project Gutenberg, and more. The model can be used as you might expect: You give it a prompt, and it attempts to answer or auto-complete it.

One noteworthy aspect of the release is that it is accompanied by "code to convert models to MLX library for inference and fine-tuning on Apple devices."

MLX is a framework released last year for running machine learning on Apple silicon. The ability to operate locally on Apple devices, rather than over the network, should make OpenELM more interesting to developers.

"Apple's OpenELM release marks a significant advancement for the AI community, offering efficient, on-device AI processing ideal for mobile apps and IoT devices with limited computing power," Shahar Chen, CEO and co-founder of AI service biz Aquant, told The Register . "This enables quick, local decision-making essential for everything from smartphones to smart home devices, expanding the potential for AI in everyday technology."

Apple is keen to show the merits of its homegrown chip architecture for machine learning, specifically supported in hardware since Cupertino introduced its Neural Engine in 2017. Nonetheless OpenELM, while it may score higher on accuracy benchmarks, comes up short in terms of performance.

"Despite OpenELM’s higher accuracy for a similar parameter count, we observe that it is slower than OLMo," the paper explains, citing tests run using Nvidia's CUDA on Linux as well as the MLX version of OpenELM on Apple Silicon.

The reason for the less than victorious showing, Apple's boffins say, is their "naive implementation of RMSNorm ," a technique for normalizing data in machine learning. In the future, they plan to explore further optimizations.

OpenELM is available in pretrained and instruction tuned models with 270 million, 450 million, 1.1 billion and 3 billion parameters. Those using it are warned to exercise due diligence before trying the model for anything meaningful.

"The release of OpenELM models aims to empower and enrich the open research community by providing access to state-of-the-art language models," the paper says. "Trained on publicly available datasets, these models are made available without any safety guarantees." ®
