Tiger Army (formed in 1996) is an American psychobilly band, fusing elements of punk rock with rockabilly and psychedelic pop and led by guitarist and frontman Nick 13, the band hails from Berkeley, California, U.S.

Originally comprised of permanent member and frontman Nick 13, upright bass player Joel Day, and drummer Adam Carson, Tiger Army played their first show in March 1996 at the 924 Gilman Street venue. The following year the group issued their debut release, a self-titled EP, later renamed “Temptation”, and contributed the track “F.T.W.” to the punk compilation “Punk Fiction”. Despite the subsequent departure of Day and Carson, the EP was heard by Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, who signed Tiger Army to his Hellcat Records label.

Tiger Army’s eponymously-titled, debut full-length arrived shortly after in October 1999, which the group supported with a mini national tour. Former AFI member Geoff Kresge was recruited on bass in 2000 as was ex-Samhain drummer London May. Featuring a punk rock aesthetic with rockabilly sensibilities, Tiger Army’s sophomore album “Tiger Army II: Power of Moonlite” was released in July 2001. Shortly after recording the album drummer London May departed and was replaced by Fred Hell, who fulfilled drumming duties on the supporting tour of Europe and Japan. In 2002 the group appeared on their label Hellcat’s “Punks vs. Pyschos" tour and subsequently the year’s Warped Tour.

A year later, in a botched robbery attempt, drummer Hell was shot four times and left unable to physically record on the group’s third full-length. Hell was present for the recording sessions however drum tech Mike Fasano assumed the drumming responsibilities on the June 2004 album “Tiger Army III: Ghost Tigers Rise”. After playing the 2004 Warped Tour however, bassist Kresge stepped down from the group and was replaced by Jeff Roffredo who toured with the group alongside Social Distortion and in Europe and Australia. A homecoming, headlining tour followed towards the tail-end of 2005, after which the group recorded their fourth full-length “Music from Regions Beyond”, released in 2007.

Live reviews

Shamefully i'd never heard any of Tiger Army's music before the first time I saw them in concert, but let's just say I was gripped from the word go! Their alternative rock/punk sound, not something i'm usually all that into, enticed me straight away, and i've been back to see them countless times since. Seeing a band live for your first experience with them is an awesome way of becoming acquainted with their music, and Nick 13's powerful riffs converted me into an immediate fan.

The most recent show that I wen to did not disappoint, if anything, their performances are getting stronger over the years. The guys have so much energy and rock every venue they play in with out fail. Every time i've seen them they've mixed the set up a little bit, yet still provide the exact show that the audience are after. They play classic after classic from their back catalogue, and throw in the odd newer or lesser known song here and there, which for dedicated fans like most of us are, is an amazing experience to hear underexposed material played live - all of which is top quality.

Every single time they play I can't believe it when the end comes so quickly, but this most recent gig was epic. They left the stage after what we all thought was their finale, then the lights went down and all we heard was the sound of Geoff slapping the bass. As the rhythm picked up, we knew we were going to get another song out of them, so the crowd erupted in anticipation. A fantastic ending to the show! I'll definitely be back for more.

It's been 13 years since I've seen Tiger Army, somewhat fitting considering this band and the number 13.

Anyway they were amazing, a ton a heart in their performance, played a good mix of every era of the band's discography. Nick 13 remains a charismatic frontman and his new backing band are great, maybe the best one his ever had.

It was fucking awesome! The opening bands were great. Great energy on the dance floor and they played a lot of there old standards. Even if you weren't familiar with this band, you would love this show. Unless you're a homo.

Brilliant show from beginning to end. Lots of energy, the well known songs as well as some deep stuff. Mix of high energy and slower songs, not afraid to take the chances. Loved it all.

It was good, man. I enjoyed it and the venue was really well-run though it was hot and the beer was expensive, they sounded nice, so kudos to the band and the mixer.

At first the sound was awful. It got a little better after a few songs. They played a good mix of new and old. My favourite song was Cupid's victim.

Tiger Army vocalist-guitarist Nick 13 said returning to the stage for the first time in two and a half years to play with Danzig at Toyota Arena in Ontario back in May was a strange feeling.

“You would think, having played hundreds, or probably thousands of shows by this point, it would come right back, but that first show, it felt like I had never been on stage in my life,” the Los Angeles resident said during phone interview ahead of the band’s annual Halloween Octoberflame shows at House of Blues Anaheim Oct. 28-29.

“That was the longest Tiger Army has gone without playing a show since we started,” he continued. “There have been periods of time off to write or record, but that was the longest stretch. I am glad that with the touring we’ve gotten to do this year, we’re back in fighting shape and ready for Octoberflame for sure.”

Coming back following the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns that completely shut down the live entertainment industry, Nick 13 said he had a difficult time trying to book any shows, let alone a full-blown tour in 2021 and this year.

“There was basically this logjam of artists trying to get back on the road and trying to book shows became a supply chain issue thing,” he said. “We found that none of the dates or venues we wanted were available, so I thought we’d do Octoberflame in Anaheim this year and that would be it.”

That’s when he got the call from fellow Los Angeles bands Flogging Molly and The Interrupters to jump on their 2022 summer tour.

“I was really happy to get that call and to get the chance to do a U.S. tour this year that we wouldn’t have gotten otherwise,” he said.

After two years without it, Nick 13 said he’s super excited to be bringing back Octoberflame, Tiger Army’s annual, multi-evening event that celebrates the Halloween season as the band members and fans come out in their costumes and rock along to carefully curated set lists each night that include alternate versions of songs, rarities, covers and a few other surprises. Nick 13 said he spends most of October figuring out how to make each show unique, adding that the sets are about 60 percent different since he knows some fans will buy tickets to both nights.

“There’s a lot of practicing and preparing,” he said.

During the pandemic-forced lockdowns, he spent time in his Los Angles home learning to make a variety of tiki drinks since his favorite tiki bars had been shut down.

“I dove pretty far into making tiki drinks at home and made about 100 recipes for the first time,” he said, noting that the Jet Pilot and Navy Grog cocktails became his favorites. “I actually got pretty good, but my skills have probably atrophied a bit since I haven’t made as much at home with everything reopened. At my height, I was pretty impressive, I think.”

Back in 2018, the band released its own tiki mugs and Nick 13 said doing that release at Tiki-Ti in Los Angeles was probably his favorite band signing event.

“I wouldn’t say that I collect tiki mugs, but I do still have a lot,” he said with a laugh. “Having 50 or whatever is me trying to not have a collection. I have too much stuff in general, but definitely when I’m on tour, sometimes I’ll see a tiki mug at a place and I’ll have to have it.”

He also worked on new music, though the solitude of the lockdowns didn’t conjure up any rip-roaring Tiger Army tunes, but rather material for his acoustic and more alt-country leaning solo career. He released his self-titled solo debut in 2011.

“I didn’t write as much as one would have thought for two-plus years off,” he said. “Inspiration, at times, was hard to come by, but I wrote solo songs. I was just at home by myself with the acoustic and it didn’t feel natural at that time to crank up the amp with an electric guitar and rock out. There are definitely songs I have from that period that I’m still kind of figuring out what to do with them.”

Tiger Army also celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021. Originally formed in the Bay Area, the band’s first show was March 29, 1996 at 924 Gilman in Berkeley. Since then, the band has released six albums, a variety of EPs and done countless tours around the world.

“I think I’m just grateful for how much people still care and how much people have stuck with us,” Nick 13 said. “With Octoberflame in particular, we’re playing to people who in many cases have been coming to see the band live for 10 or even 20 years and a lot of them have seen us five, 10, 15 times or even more, so that comes with a special kind of pressure. We want to equal or outdo the best performance they’ve ever seen, so we raise the bar when it comes to Octoberflame. I just have a lot of gratitude at the moment, like ‘How have I been doing this for so long?’”

Tiger Army will wrap up 2022 by playing with the Misfits at the Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve.

“That’s definitely one of my biggest influences and there were a lot of things that were special about them that really appealed to me and still kind of inform what we do,” he said of the Misfits. “That connection between the rock and roll of the ’50s and ’60s and punk rock, that’s always been my favorite part, and the fact that Danzig was a real singer.”

Nick 13’s favorite Misfits song is “Hybrid Moments” off his favorite Misfits album, “Static Age.” In the past, Tiger Army has covered “American Nightmare” and “Violent World” in its Octoberflame sets.

“If I could go back and tell my teenage self, when I was dreaming about starting a band, that we’d be playing a show like that on New Year’s Eve, I’d be pretty happy,” he said.

2024 Masters Round 1 recap: Leaderboard, how Tiger Woods did, highlights

Editor's note: Follow live coverage of the Masters, leaderboard, highlights and more.

Day 1 of the 2024 Masters has blown by.

Bryson DeChambeau holds the lead with a score of minus-7 after completing all 18 holes on Thursday. It’s his career-best round at Augusta. The world’s top-ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler, sits in second one stroke behind after finishing his first round.

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.

Tiger Woods is in one of nine groups that didn’t finish first-round play. There was a weather delay, which pushed back start times. The five-time Masters champion has a score of minus-1 and is tied for 17th. He, Jason Day and Max Homa made it through hole No. 13 before the alarm sounded that darkness was starting to descend.

2016 Masters champion Danny Willett finished the round with a score of minus-4 in his return from shoulder surgery. Last year’s champion, Jon Rahm, has a score of plus-1. — Victoria Hernandez

MORE: Masters leaderboard

Who is leading at the Masters 2024?

American Bryson DeChambeau is atop the leaderboard after the first round of the 2024 Masters. DeChambeau, who has one major win to his resume, finished the day with eight birdies and only one bogey for -7 on the day. DeChambeau joined LIV Golf in June 2022 and is one of 13 in the field at the Masters this year. He’s in pursuit of his first green jacket — his best showing was at the 2016 Masters when he finished tied for 21st place.

DeChambeau only has a one stroke lead over fellow American Scottie Scheffler (-6), who sits in second place. Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard (-5) is in third place and has the potential to climb up the leaderboard. He only completed 15 holes in round one before play was suspended due to darkness. Højgaard will resume play on the first round on Friday.  — Cydney Henderson

What did Tiger Woods shoot today?

Tiger Woods got off to a good start at the 2024 Masters. He shot minus-1 through 13 holes before play was suspended at Augusta National due to darkness. He will resume the first round at 7:50 a.m. ET on Friday morning.

The 15-time major winner showed power on the day, reaching up to 180 MPH ball speed on several drives. He also had several clutch saves during the round, including a precise chip shot out of the bunker on the 10th hole to stay under par on the day. So far, he’s shot two birdies and one bogey.

Woods has won the Masters five times his career, most recently in 2019. — Cydney Henderson

Round 1 suspended due to darkness

Play during Round 1 of the Masters was suspended at 7:51 p.m. ET at Augusta National Golf Club.

Subpar weather conditions at Augusta National caused a two-and-a-half-hour delay Thursday. The first tee time, which was originally scheduled for 8 a.m. ET, was moved to 10:30 a.m.

The first round will resume on Friday at 7:50 a.m. ET. Among the golfers still on the course when Round 1 play was suspended were Nicolai Højgaard (-5 through 15 holes), Max Homa (-4 through 13), Tyrrell Hatton (-3 through 14) and Tiger Woods (-1 through 13).

Round 2 play will begin at 8 a.m. ET on Friday. — Jim Reineking

Bryson DeChambeau leading Masters using 3-D printed irons only approved by USGA on Monday

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Mad Scientist is at it again.

Bryson DeChambeau, who opened with a  7-under 65 in the first round  of the  Masters  at Augusta National Golf Club, is playing with a custom set of single-length irons made by little-known clubmaker Avoda that are made by 3-D printing and weren’t approved by the USGA until Monday . With no hesitation, DeChambeau inserted them in the bag at the Masters. — Adam Schupak , Golfweek

Wyndham Clark carded 1-over in his  first competitive round at Augusta National.

Wyndham Clark takes shot at LIV golf when asked about Masters leader Bryson DeChambeau

When asked if an 8-shot deficit to leader —  and LIV golfer — Bryson DeChambeau is insurmountable , Clark brushed off the suggestion.

“We've got 54 holes,” the reigning U.S. Open champion said . “In LIV Golf they only play 54, so I like my chances.” — Doug Stutsman, Special to the Augusta Chronicle

Tiger Woods finishes day one under par after 13 holes

The 13th hole (par 5) threatened to end Woods’ streak of eight consecutive holes at par or under. He teed off a 295-yard drive with 173 MPH ball speed that ended up in the rough behind a line of trees. He took a moment to strategize how he was going to avoid hitting any trees that surrounded him and ultimately decided to play it conservatively with a low straight shot that found the fairway. He landed on the green his next stroke and two-putted the ball in to save par. He finished the day at minus-1 through 13 holes. — Cydney Henderson

Nicolai Højgaard moves up leaderboard

Nicolai Højgaard sits in third place on the leaderboard, behind Bryson DeChambeau (minus-7) and Scottie Scheffler (minus-6) after 15 holes of play.

Højgaard vaulted up the leaderboard after birdies on four of five holes on the back nine. After birdying holes Nos. 11-13, Højgaard bogeyed No. 14 and then rebounded with a birdie on No. 15.

Both DeChambeau and Scheffler have completed Round 1. — Jim Reineking

Tiger Woods saves par on No. 12, stays under par

Woods teed off at the 12th hole (Par 3, 150 yards) with a seven iron and overshot the green, ending up in the rough at the back of the hole. The ball was positioned near a sprinkler head, so Woods had to awkwardly get into position for his second stroke, but he was able to make clean contact with the ball despite the debris. He gently chipped the ball on the green and knocked down the putt to save par. He’s at minus-1. — Cydney Henderson

Drip check: Jason Day rocks hammer pants that wave in the wind

A weather delay pushed back tee times on Thursday and the wind continued to push Jason Day’s pants around.

The Australian golfer, who is in the same group as Tiger Woods, was a trending topic on X, formerly Twitter, for his oversized pants that flapped in the wind. Fans compared Day to rap icon MC Hammer , who was known for his parachute pants, or implied that perhaps the golfer was trying to pay homage to a younger Woods .

Day is currently tied for 31st place with an even score through 10 holes. — Victoria Hernandez

Tiger Woods pars No. 11, still at minus-1

Welcome back to Amen’s Corner, Tiger.

Woods drove the ball 300 yards up the fairway with a ball speed of 174 MPH to open up the 11th hole, the start of Amen’s Corner, a stretch of three holes at the Masters that is considered to be particularly difficult. According to the ESPN broadcast, the 11th hole (par 4, 530 yards) is the second toughest hole on the course today.

As Woods approached his second shot, the wind howled before he dropped the ball right in front of the green. His next shot was a work of art. He chipped the ball inches away from the hole to a lot of applause from the crowd and tapped it in for a par. He remains at minus-1. — Cydney Henderson

Tiger Woods on back nine, still at one under par

Woods started the 10th hole (par 4, 495 yards) out strong with a 306-yard drive down the fairway, but he missed to the right on his next stroke and landed in the bunker. Woods was not satisfied with his shot, rolling his eyes and taking a swipe at the grass with his club afterward, but he rebounded nicely. Woods executed a chip shot to get out of the bunker and set himself up for a routine putt for par. He remains at minus-1 through 10 holes. — Cydney Henderson

Tiger Woods shows he can still drive the ball

Tiger Woods still has power. At the ninth hole, Woods teed off on a 303-yard drive with a 177 MPH ball speed to set him up for a birdie attempt.

Although he had an opportunity to climb up the leaderboard, Woods’ putt for birdie lost steam uphill against the wind. Woods is at minus-1 at the halfway point. He had two birdies and one bogey in the first nine holes. — Cydney Henderson

Rory McIlroy finishes up-and-down Round 1

Rory McIlroy finished the first round at Augusta National tied for 15th place at 1 under par after a roller coaster of a day.

McIlroy, a four-time majors winner who has yet to win the Masters, got off to a rough start and bogeyed two of the first four holes. He proceed to right the ship, however, and shot four birdies to bring him to minus-2 heading into the 17th hole. Then, disaster struck and McIlroy shot his third bogey of the round and finished at minus-1 on the day. — Cydney Henderson

Scottie Scheffler finishes first round alone in second

Scottie Scheffler put on a show in his attempt for his second green jacket. The top-ranked player in the world finished his first round at the Masters with a score of -6 with 66 strokes through all 18 holes. He had six birdies, including one on hole No. 16 to bring him within one stroke of leader Bryson DeChambeau. Scheffler won the 2022 Masters. — Victoria Hernandez

Tiger Woods picks up birdie, gets back under par

Tiger Woods is back under par after picking up a birdie on hole No. 8, which the ESPN broadcasters dubbed the “easiest hole on the golf course today” at Par-5 and 570 yards.

Woods opened the hole by launching a 307-yard drive down the right side of the fairway with a ball speed at 180 MPH. He landed on the green with his next stroke and two-putted the ball in for his second birdie of the day. He’s tied in 15th place at -1 through eight holes. — Cydney Henderson

Scottie Scheffler moves closer to lead with birdie

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler is showing his skills and lingering at the top of the leaderboard.

He shot a birdie on hole No. 16 to come within one stroke of leader Bryson DeChambeau. Scheffler smacked a drive where the ball landed squarely on the green. He then easily tapped in the putt to score two strokes on the par-three hole.

His score of -6 stands alone in second place. - Victoria Hernandez

Tiger Woods scores par on No. 7

Tiger Woods is staying consistent and scored par on hole No 7. He tapped a short putt on the fourth stroke of the hole to finish it off. He’s scored par on five of his holes so far with a birdie and a bogey. His even score is tied for 29th place. - Victoria Hernandez

Tiger Woods even through six holes

Tiger Woods' putt on the sixth hole was bad. He left the uphill effort well short. That’s not the kind of effort we’re used to seeing from the 15-time major champion. He converted from 5 feet out for par, so no harm no foul. - Adam Woodard, Golfweek

Patrick Cantlay nails eagle after early struggles

On his second stroke of the No. 17 hole with 146 yards to go, he smacked the ball and it bounced on the green before casually rolling into the cup. He cracked a little smile and fist bumped his competitors.

Cantlay has shot three birdies and four bogeys in the first round. The eagle brought him to a score of -1. - Victoria Hernandez

Bryson DeChambeau finishes first round with lead

Bryson DeChambeau has finished his first round at Augusta. He completed the 18 holes with a score of -7 and 65 strokes, including eight birdies. The score puts him three strokes ahead of three second-place golfers. It’s his career best round at the Masters.

"I felt like I placed the golf ball in the right place today," he told ESPN. "I didn’t put myself into too many poor spots. I got a couple good breaks, but for the most part, I rolled it well, drove it well, hit my irons pretty well and took advantage when the opportunity presented itself."

Viktor Hovland moves up to second with three consecutive birdies

Viktor Hovland came to play. He is tied for second with a score of -4 after shooting three consecutive birdies on holes No. 7, 8 and 9. He also had a score under par on hole No. 2.

Hovland finished tied for seventh at last year’s Masters, his best finish so far at Augusta. - Victoria Hernandez

Tiger Woods tees off to much fanfare

Tiger Woods teed off at Augusta at 3:54 p.m. ET. He was met with loud applause when he was announced ahead of his first stroke at hole No. 1. Wearing a pink polo, he lined up for a swing and smacked the ball cleanly. The crowd cheered again when it fell on the fairway.

He finished the hole with a birdie.

Danny Willett finishes impressive first round in return from injury

Danny Willett’s quest to capture a second green jacket is going swimmingly so far.

The 2016 Masters champion finished the first round with a score of -4 totaling 68 strokes and is tied for second. His birdie on hole No.1 was the field’s first hole under par for the tournament. This is his first competition since September when he had shoulder surgery. - Victoria Hernandez

Bryson DeChambeau takes Masters lead

Ryan Fox had been leading the Masters through the afternoon, but Bryson DeChambeau reclaimed the spot at the top of the leaderboard.

He had a birdie on hole No. 15 to make his score -5 and separate himself from Fox. It was his sixth birdie of the day. He shot 2 under par at the three holes that make up Amen Corner. - Victoria Hernandez

Scottie Scheffler wows with birdie

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler offered some excitement on hole No. 6. He took a moment to line up for a mid-range putt on the green, his second shot on the hole. He gave the ball a gentle tap and it rolled smoothly across the green and dropped into the cup.

It’s his second birdie of the day. He also made it on the second hole.

His -2 score ties him for fourth. - Victoria Hernandez

Will Zalatoris chips in shot to save par

Will Zalatoris kept his score in the negative when he made a chip shot at hole No. 5.

The ball was sitting on the fairway just outside the green. Zalatoris lined up and perfectly smacked it to dribble on the green and plunk into the hole.

He is tied for eighth with a score of -1. - Victoria Hernandez

Justin Thomas barely misses putt

Hole No. 5 is proving tricky for the field today.

Justin Thomas is the latest to struggle on the hole. The ball was sitting on the green and he lined up for a putt, which would be his fourth stroke for par. He tapped the ball and it glided just next to the cup. The crowd groaned with Thomas at the missed shot. He then tapped the ball in for a bogey.

Thomas now has an even score through five holes. He is tied for 18th on the leaderboard.

Ryan Fox is in the lead at -5 through nine holes. - Victoria Hernandez

Masters leaderboard: Ryan Fox's eagle gives him lead at 5 under

An eagle on the par-5 eighth hole has given New Zealand's Ryan Fox the outright lead in the opening round of the Masters.

Fox birdied his first three holes of the day to grab a share of the lead, but after a run of four consecutive pars, he carded the first eagle of the tournament to move to 5-under on his round.

Fox, 37, tied for 26th at last year's Masters, his first appearance at Augusta and made the cut in all four major championships in 2023.

Masters leaderboard: Christo Lamprecht joins the top

One of the tallest competitors in Masters history, amateur Christo Lamprecht has grabbed a share of the lead.

The 23-year-old South African hit a nearly perfect tee shot on the par-3 sixth hole that left him with a putt shorter than his 6-8 height, which he converted for one of his three birdies on the front nine.

Lamprecht won the British Amateur last year and was the low amateur at the 2023 British Open. Born in South Africa, he's currently a senior at Georgia Tech. — Steve Gardner

Erik van Rooyen continues solid start

Making his third Masters appearance, Erik van Rooyen is making the most of it.

Van Rooyen, who was part of the first pair to tee off, is in a four-way tie for the lead at 3 under as he hits the turn.

The South Africa native has two wins on the PGA Tour, but his highest finish in a major was in 2019 when he tied for eighth at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. — Casey Moore

Masters leaderboard: Ryan Fox, Byeong Hun An join Bryson DeChambeau

New Zealand's Ryan Fox matched Bryson DeChambeau's sizzling start with birdies on his first three holes to share the early lead.

Fox, 37, tied for 26th at last year's Masters, his first appearance at Augusta. The DP World Tour player of the year in 2022, Fox made the cut in all four major championships in 2023.

Not to be outdone, Korea's Byeong Hun An also birdied his first three holes to grab a share of the lead. — Steve Gardner

Masters forecast at Augusta

The storm front that forced a 2 1/2-hour delay in starting first-round play at Augusta National has given way to sunshine and breezy conditions with the arrival of the noon hour.

The wind is expected to gust up to 40 mph during the course of the day, making it more difficult for players with afternoon tee times.

Among the more prominent names who will have to deal with those conditions: defending champion Jon Rahm (1 p.m. start), 2022 winner Scottie Scheffler (1:12) and five-time champ Tiger Woods (3:54). — Steve Gardner

Bryson DeChambeau birdies first three holes

2020 U.S. Open Bryson DeChambeau is off to a scorching hot start, making birdies on each of his first three holes to take over the lead at Augusta.

Erik van Rooyen is still at 2 under after seven holes, good enough for second place. Danny Willett, who birdied two of the first three holes, bogeyed No. 5 to fall into a pack tied for third at 1 under.

Getting ready to tee off next is Phil Mickelson, Sepp Straka and Tony Finau.

Masters leaders: Willett, van Rooyen tied at 2 under

England's Danny Willett and South Africa's Erik van Rooyen each have a pair of birdies on their scorecards in the early going at Augusta National.

They share the lead at 2-under par.

Van Rooyen, in the day's first pairing off the tee, birdied the third and sixth holes.

History of Green Jacket at Masters

The Green Jacket awarded to the Masters champion each year is one of the most iconic symbols in sports. The tradition dates back to the founding of Augusta National Golf Club when it was decided that members should wear brightly colored blazers at the 1937 Masters so that patrons would know who to ask if they needed assistance.

2024 Masters leaderboard: Max Homa stars, Bryson DeChambeau holds alongside Scottie Scheffler after Round 2

It may -- or may not -- be a three-horse race to the finish at augusta national with scheffler, dechambeau and homa out in front of the field.

He wasn't the headliner coming into the week, hell, he wasn't even the headliner in his own grouping, but Max Homa finds himself center stage heading into the weekend at the 2024 Masters. Playing alongside Tiger Woods the first two days, the Californian put together a sensational effort and finds himself in a share of the lead at 6 under alongside Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau.

Homa is naturally the underdog of the three Americans atop the leaderboard. Scheffler has the form, DeChambeau has the power, but that won't render Homa without advantages of his own over the weekend as a new secret weapon of his has emerged at Augusta National.

"I'd like to maintain this outlook I have on how I'm playing golf," Homa said. "Good shot, bad shot, doesn't really matter. Did I go through my process; did I commit to my shot? And once it takes off, I might as well close my eyes. I'd like to see if I can continue to do that this weekend. I think that's something I would like to take with me going forward.

"... Just having a bit of moxie, I guess. I feel like I showed it the last couple days, especially [Thursday] the first few holes playing with Tiger in front of a lot of people at the Masters and played some great golf. So, I know I have that one in me. I'd like to see if I have the mental discipline for a whole week. I'm going to hope for that one."

The 33-year-old was brilliant next to his childhood hero across the first 36 holes, thanks in large part to this discipline. Putting the finishing touches on a first-round 67 Friday morning, Homa experienced a quick turnaround for his second round and found red figures once again in the form of a 71.

He got a front row seat to Tiger's 24th consecutive made cut , but Woods also got a front row seat to Homa's major coming out party.

"He's got all the talent in the world," Woods said of Homa. "I got a chance to play with him at the Open Championship at St. Andrews, and his ball flight, as solid as he hits it, it's just a matter of time before he starts winning in bunches. I saw it up front; he doesn't really mishit shots. That's something you just have to do around this golf course."

Homa has certainly done that and as a reward will enter the weekend in a major championship not only with a chance to win but with his name atop the leaderboard. Just recently cashing his first major top 10 at the 2023 Open, where he entered through the backdoor, Homa has never been one to take the direct route.

He found his footing on the professional level later than his peers. It took him time to figure things out. But once he got the experience, there was no denying him. He has been a gamer on the U.S. Presidents Cup team and a lone bright spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Homa has won big-time tournaments at major championship venues like Riviera and Quail Hollow.

He has done just about everything there is to do in the game except contend in major championships. Homa will check that box off this weekend, that is for sure, and if this mental discipline and moxie of his persists, he may well check off another.

2024 Masters leaderboard, Round 2

T1. Max Homa, Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler (-6): What an immense group. There's a little bit of everything for everyone among the leaders. Scheffler is going to über steady, DeChambeau is going to be a show, and Homa is going to be a bit of an unknown. What we do know is these three guys are certainly playing the best golf as Scheffler ranks first from tee to green, DeChambeau ranks first in ball striking and Homa ranks first in greens in regulation.

T4. Nicolai Højgaard (-4): The young Dane is holding tough thanks to some serious scoring upside. Højgaard has carded 11 birdies along with seven bogeys and 18 pars to get himself in the mix in his Masters debut. He had gotten as low as 6 under on Friday, but a pair of dropped shots over his last two means that he will feature in the chasing pack and not the leading.

T6. Collin Morikawa, Cameron Davis (-3): Morikawa has been average in 2024, largey because his iron play has been lackluster. It has been much improved this week -- fifth in strokes gained approach -- but a new putter in the bag has been the true difference-maker. The two-time major champion gained nearly three strokes putting while posting his second-round 70.

"This is exactly where I'd want to be," Morikawa said. "Obviously, I'd rather be a little lower and closer to the lead, but for right now, after I've been playing the past kind of month, I'm very, very happy. It feels like I have control of the golf ball, and that's the biggest thing. My irons have been holding me back, and normally that's not the case. It's kind of nice to just hit some quality golf shots."

7. Ludvig Åberg (-2): The only man to break 70 on Friday was the man who is making his major championship debut. Åberg had everything rolling in his second round as he ranked first in ball striking and seventh in strokes gained putting en route to a 3-under 69. Making six birdies, the young Swede filled it up on a day few did. He now finds himself inside the top 10 and in with a chance to become the first debutant to win the Masters in 45 years.

"Me and Joe [Skovron] talked about [hitting away from pins] quite a lot today and just tried to give ourselves chances," Åberg said. "You would prefer to putt from 40 feet than chip from 12. I think a lot of those times we're not necessarily trying to go for the pin, we're just giving ourselves chances, especially when the conditions are tough."

T8. Cameron Young, Tommy Fleetwood, Cameron Smith and four others (-1): Thirty-six of the last 37 Masters champions were inside the top 10 at the halfway point, meaning this group is still very much alive. Only five strokes off the pace, a number of major championship stalwarts find themselves with a conceivable path to Butler Cabin. Fleetwood has gone 72-71 across the first two days and is well-suited for the weekend test. He's got a couple major championship scoring records, but those performances have come too late in the competition.

T15. Xander Schauffele, Patrick Reed, Matt Fitzpatrick and four others (E): Consider Schauffele lurking. The world No. 5 hasn't been all world the first two days, but he has been good enough to give himself a chance heading into the weekend. He's got four birdies and four bogeys to go along with a whole lot of pars which are never a bad thing in major championships. The bad news is he will not have the luxury to par Augusta National to death given the deficit.

T22. Tiger Woods and Eric Cole (+1): Woods put on a short-game clinic the first two days. Getting up-and-down from just about everywhere throughout Augusta National, the five-time champion not only made the cut for a record 24th consecutive time, he gave himself a chance to post a really quality result. Woods has hit 22 fairways through 36 holes, his best mark at the Masters since 1999 (!), but the iron play has not been vintage Tiger-like; it's has been holding him back from going under par.

"I have a chance going into the weekend," Woods said. "I'm here. I have a chance to win the golf tournament. ... I got my two rounds in. Just need some food and some caffeine, and I'll be good to go."

T24. Brooks Koepka, Tyrrell Hatton, Patrick Cantlay and three others (+2): Koepka will need a big one tomorrow, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. He looks very close after two rounds of 73 and will just need to piece the entirety of his game together for a memorable Moving Day. After struggling most of the season on the greens, the five-time major champion took a big step with the putter on Friday.

Rahm rolls in another

The defending champion gets another one when it matters the most. Making birdie from down below on No. 16, Rahm should make his way into the weekend.

Rahm rolls one in

That's a big one from the defending champion. Jon Rahm makes birdie on the par-5 15th to get back inside the cut number at 5 over. He stands there alongside the likes of Viktor Hovland and Joaquin Niemann as well. There is no room for error.

Rahm now outside the cut line

Welp, the defending champion is in danger of missing his first cut at the Masters. A 3-putt double bogey has Jon Rahm at 6 over and one outside the cutline with four holes to play. The good news is he now steps to a par 5, but the bad news is it is still windy as hell.

Scheffler doesn't get lucky this time on 13

After somehow not finding Rae's Creek on Thursday, Scottie Scheffler finds it on Friday. Our leader is wet on the par-5 13th and will be scrambling for par to remain one clear of Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa who are in the house. Not many low scores out there, but Matt Fitzpatrick is one of them hanging tough at 2 under.

Bryson gets in at 6 under

The first-round leader shoots 1-over 73 in Round 2 and finds himself in a share of the clubhouse lead with Max Homa. Where he stands heading into the weekend is very dependent on what Scottie Scheffler does who is 7 under through 11. Bryson was great again, but he missed a number of putts that were holed yesterday — the main difference.

Rory wet on 11

The par 4 is nearly playing to an average of 5 and it's because of shots like that from Rory McIlroy. From the middle of the fairway, McIlroy hits a wall of wind and his ball gets pushed into the pond lining the front left of the green. He hopes to save bogey which would put him at 2 over for the tournament. Looks like the cutline is settling at +5 so he should be safe of that. Should.

Scheffler jumps into a share

Two birdies in his last three holes have Scottie Scheffler in a tie for the lead at 7 under. The world No. 1 bombed a drive down the 10th setting up a wedge approach from a flat lie. He took advantage with a sensational approach and another birdie to tie Bryson DeChambeau who is in some trouble on 16.

What happened Thursday and Friday at the 2024 Masters

tiger army tour dates 2022

Day two at the Masters

It was a windy, gusty Friday at Augusta National for the second round of the Masters.

It's a three-way tie atop the leaderboard heading into the weekend with Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa all at 6-under-par.

DeChambeau, who was the 18-hole leader, shot a second-round 73. He is searching for his second major championship this weekend.

Scheffler shot even par in his second round. The 2022 Masters champion is also searching for his second major after victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship.

Then there's Homa, who continued his brilliant play after his first round Thursday was suspended due to darkness. After playing 23 holes Friday, Homa shot a second-round 71, putting himself in contention to win his first major.

How Neal Shipley claimed Masters low amateur honors: ‘A little bit of grit’

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Neal Shipley wasn’t raised in a golf family. But he did grow up with a family that loved golf.

The Sunday afternoon of the 2004 PGA Championship was all it took for the Ohio State graduate student — the only amateur to make the cut at this week’s Masters — to fish his dad’s neglected golf clubs out of a closet and give this humbling game a lifelong shot.

“Me and my dad were on our couch,” Shipley said on Friday after finishing 36 holes at Augusta National in 3-over and making the cut by three shots. “And Vijay Singh won. The next day I took my dad’s golf clubs, which were dusty and probably never used, and started swinging around. I decided to get my own little set, and it took off from there.”

Shipley wasn’t just hooked, he was adamant. As an elementary schooler, he told anyone in his hometown of Mt. Lebanon, Penn. that he intended to become a professional golfer. In the second grade, he took his bag to school for “show and tell.” Shipley’s class ventured outdoors at recess to watch him launch drivers into the schoolyard. He was a regular at his local junior league. Shipley’s family eventually decided to join St. Clair Country Club, so he could properly hone his craft.

“We joined a country club so that he’d have a place to play,” says his father, also named Neal Shipley, “But we’re not country club people.”

Twenty years later, Shipley will play the weekend at the 88th Masters at a firm and fast Augusta National after being invited as the 2023 U.S. Amateur runner-up. He’s tied for 30th, hanging right in there with legends of the game, including 61-year-old Singh, who sits at 4-over, one stroke behind the 23-year-old on the leaderboard through 36 holes.

Round of the day: Ludvig Åberg

Åberg shoots second-round 69

(Photo: David Cannon / Getty Images)

Ludvig Åberg shot the round of the day Friday with a second-round 69.

The last player to have the round of the day at the Masters — no ties — in his Masters Tournament debut was Smylie Kaufman in 2016 (69 in round three).

History of world No. 1 holding 36-hole lead at Masters

Since the OWGR began in 1986, this will be the fourth time the reigning No. 1 has held the 36-hole lead at the Masters.

1996 Greg Norman — led by four (finished 2nd)

2020 Dustin Johnson — co-led (won)

2022 Scottie Scheffler — led by five (won)

2024 Scottie Scheffler — co-leader

A challenging scoring day at Augusta

Today (75.08) was the highest field scoring average in round two of The Masters since 2007, and just the fourth time in the last 30 years the field averaged higher than 75 in the second round.

Who missed the cut?

The wind was punishing Friday, seemingly eliminating stars in a matter of seconds with one blowup hole being enough to derail a round. Double bogey became a common score to see, like reigning Open Champion Brian Harman (+9) finishing his first round Friday morning by going triple-bogey, double-bogey, double-bogey.

Maybe the most painful missed cut was Justin Thomas. The two-time major winner was even par with four holes to go, but he double-bogeyed 15 and 16, bogeyed 17 and double-bogeyed 18 to miss the cut by losing seven shots in four holes.

Viktor Hovland was one of the best players in the world six months ago, but his fascinating, strange struggles continue as Hovland went from 4-under early Thursday to shooting an 81 in round two to drop to 8-over and miss out on the weekend.

Others to miss the cut include three-time major winner Jordan Spieth (+9), Wyndham Clark (+7), Sam Burns (+9) and Dustin Johnson (+13).

Masters Round 2 takeaways: Scheffler, DeChambeau, Homa share 36-hole lead

Masters Round 2 takeaways: Scheffler, DeChambeau, Homa share 36-hole lead

LIV has 8 make the cut

DeChambeau is certainly doing most of the heavy lifting for the LIV field as he sits at 6-under for the co-lead, but LIV brought 13 golfers to the Masters and eight made the cut. It might not be looking like the same success as three golfers finishing top four last year, yet multiple players are still in the mix.

DataGolf gives DeChambeau a 23 percent chance of winning the Masters, while Cam Smith sits at 1-under par at the halfway point. Smith is one of the better players at Augusta, with four top-10s here in the last five years. Patrick Reed, another Masters expert who won the green jacket in 2018, is T16 at even par.

Other LIV golfers to make the cut include Brooks Koepka (+2), Tyrell Hatton (+2), Joaquin Niemann (+4), Phil Mickelson (+4) and Jon Rahm (+5). Rahm, the defending Masters champ, shot 76 in round two to take himself out of contention but still made the cut. Meanwhile, 2020 Masters champ Dustin Johnson missed out at 13-over.

DeChambeau in lead with new custom-made irons

One of the stories of the tournament has been not just DeChambeau’s impressive play — where he co-leads at 6-under par — but also his fascinating switch to a new set of custom-made, 3D-printed irons that were only approved by the USGA this week.

The approval was down to the wire, with DeChambeau receiving feedback last week they’d be non-conforming due to too sharp of groove edges. He didn’t receive full approval of the set made by a company called Avoda until early Tuesday morning. Despite the Masters being 48 hours away, he switched to them immediately and felt comfortable by the end of Wednesday. Thursday, he shot a first-round 65 for the solo lead.

“They have just got a different curvature on the face than other equipment,” Dechambeau explained. “Most equipment is flat. These have a different curvature on the face that allows me to have my mis-hits to go a little straighter sometimes.”

DeChambeau has had the idea for these irons since 2020, and when asked if he couldn’t find a manufacturer to make them he only said: “I’m not going to speak much more on that but I’ve had this idea for a long, long time.”

The set is one of a kind, with DeChambeu confirming there is no backup set. He said they’re holding up well, but if anything did happen to them he would switch back to his Ping i330s that he’s been using since July. It’s worth noting that since July, DeChambeau has had two LIV wins and four straight top-10s.

Scheffler shoots second-round 72

Scheffler tied for the lead

(Photo: Andrew Redington/Getty Images)

After a tricky day at Augusta National, Scottie Scheffler is atop the leaderboard at the Masters.

He shot a second-round 72 with three birdies and three bogeys.

Scheffler is in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa.

JT misses the cut

Justin Thomas will once again miss the cut at the Masters due to an abysmal back nine. The two-time major champion finished double-double-bogey-double to shoot a back nine 42, carding a 7-over 79 for his second round. Thomas suffered a very similar fate last year at Augusta National, when he came in with four bogeys and a double to miss the weekend, playing in a torrential downpour.

While many big names struggled on Friday afternoon on a firm, fast and brutally windy Augusta, Thomas's implosion feels particularly notable, especially in the wake of his recent split with his longtime caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay.

Thomas missed the cut in three of the four majors last season and hoped 2024 would serve as a sort of blank slate. So far, his PGA Tour results have shown signs of hope (he has four top-12s this season) but is Thomas still in the midst of his major championship slump?

Tiger compared to the field average

Woods beats field average

(Photo: Ben Jared/PGA TOUR via Getty Images)

Tiger Woods beat the field average in each of the first two rounds. Today was the 80th time in his Masters career he's shot a score better than the field that day.

Highest percentage of rounds beating field in Masters history (min. 30 rounds):

Lloyd Mangrum, 81.7 percent

Tiger Woods, 81.6 percent

Ben Hogan, 79.6 percent

Hugh Kellenberger

Hovland falls to 8-over-par

Viktor Hovland is now 8-over but he's still having a very good week because all golf clothing discourse is now solely about Jason Day/Malbon.

Max Homa is finally having his Masters breakthrough

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Max Homa walked up to the beginning of the most famous three holes in golf, alone, unconcerned with the legend behind him. Unconcerned with the surroundings or the stage.

Back on the 10th green, Tiger Woods and Jason Day took their time reading putts and finishing the hole. But Homa had his par. He had his co-lead at the Masters. So for a full two minutes, Homa walked ahead, up the hill to the start of Amen Corner.

This time was going to be different. This time, he was going to worry about himself.

He thought back to his journal scribblings from Thursday night, a habit he’s been focusing on the past year. He writes what he’s grateful for and mental goals for the day. And on Thursday night he wrote a simple mantra.

However good I am is however good I am.

Read more about Homa's second-round performance here .

Max Homa is finally having his Masters breakthrough

Rahm back-to-back birdies

Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, had a double bogey on the 14th hole.

That brought him to 6-over, below the cut line.

How did Rahm respond?

With back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16. His birdie on 16 was well below the hole on the green.

Rahm is 4-over-par and currently inside the cut line. Can he hang on to make the weekend?

Zach Johnson responds to apparent profanity toward patrons: 'That's laughable'

Zach Johnson responded to his apparent profanity toward patrons on the par-3 12th.

"That I swore at the patrons? That's laughable," Johnson said. "That's completely laughable. I can't hear the patrons, number one. Number two, I just made a triple bogey on the 12th hole that evidently is going to make me miss the cut, which at the time I knew was pretty sensitive in the sense that I needed to keep making pars.

"If I've said anything, which I'm not going to deny, especially if it's on camera, one, I apologize, and two, it was fully directed towards myself entirely because I can't hear anything behind me. Does that make sense?"

Scheffler bogeys 13 after finding water

Scottie Scheffler entered the 13th hole with a one-shot lead at the Masters. He left it in a three-way tie with Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau after putting an aggressive second shot into Rae's Creek. His nice chip from the drop gave him a chance to save par, but he just barely missed the putt to ultimately bogey the hole. Some might call it slight karma after Scheffler caught a lucky break on 13 yesterday.

He hit a similar approach that fell short in round one but that time it miraculously stayed up on the hill above the creek. He was able to chip up and still birdie the hole. Now, he enters the final five holes at even par for the round.

Tyrrell Hatton criticizes pace of play

Hatton calls out group in front's slow play

(Photo: Warren Little/Getty Images)

Englishman Tyrell Hatton criticized the pace of play in the group in front of him at the Masters on Friday, a group that included LIV teammate Patrick Reed in addition to Sungjae Im and Kurt Kitayama.

"Yeah, the lads in front have been so slow," Hatton said. "It's pretty poor from the officials that it took 32 holes to put them on the clock. Yesterday they'd lost a hole and a half, and then they weren't any better even this morning, and then for the second round they were just brutal. Fine for them; they're not waiting on any shot that they hit. But for us, we stood in the fairway, we stood on the tee. It was really hard to get a rhythm, so it was disappointing that it took 32 holes for an official to go, oh, we've put the group in front on the clock."

Hatton said he said something to a rules official on the eighth hole when his group had to wait to hit on 8 because the group ahead was still putting on the green. He said he knew that group was the culprit because the group two ahead was already teeing off on the 10th hole.

"It's a small field. It's not hard to really keep up with the group in front. I understand if you've had a tough hole, but when it's just like every hole, then it's a bit more frustrating."

DeChambeau shoots 73

DeChambeau 6-under-par

(Photo: Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

Bryson DeChambeau shoots a second-round 73.

An up and down back nine for DeChambeau who recorded three bogeys and two birdies.

He also had the content moment of the day when he carried a direction sign with his bare hand.

DeChambeau is currently at 6-under-par and tied with Max Homa.

Scottie Scheffler is the solo leader at 7-under-par.

Howling winds at Augusta

The winds are howling at Augusta National.

Gary Woodland's ball at the par-3 16th moved down the green from its original spot.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele had an extra wait at the par-4 11th.

A difficult conclusion to this second round ahead.
