WingTalkers - Aviation Career Resources Courses

The World’s Best Air Shows for your Bucket List

Air Shows are great fun and a great spectacle. They are also wonderful places to show off shiny new aircraft for commercial, private, and military customers.

If you work in Aviation , or you market in the aviation community, one of the best places to mingle with all these companies is the biggest conferences and the biggest Air Shows.

Or you’re interested in careers in Aerospace, and you want to know who the best ones are in 2022 and 2023, now that Covid has passed. This is the list for you.

air show travel

There are many ways to get your admission ticket too. If you’re savvy. They all have public days as well as business days depending who you are, but all the exhibitors will be open for business on both. There are also many ways to get cheap tickets depending on your career status.

So, here’s your WT Biggest Air Show viewing experience…

Le Bourget France

Paris air show.

Next one is 2023 and this is the Big One for commercial aviation. Airbus for one uses it as a centerpiece to announce huge orders from flag carriers and low-cost startups alike . In terms of incredible performers of civil and military aircraft, it’s awesome.

The Russians, especially, love to show off their latest fighters that defy gravity. We all have bucket lists, The Indy 500, the Masters, watching a Space X launch but if you don’t have a Sukhoi Fighter at a Paris Air Show on that list. Then my friend, I have no idea what you are doing.

Dubai Air Show

Next one also in 2023. DXB has invested heavily in everything to make it a global hub for everything aerospace. Finance Markets, flight hubs, Russian holiday homes… But the Air Show is now a huge event. Commercial aircraft, Private Jets, and more recently Technical and Engineering ventures.

They have a great static display featuring new and developing aerospace sectors such as UAS and electric aircraft platforms. If you are in the market for a new G5000 or have a silicon start-up in the composites or travel fintech sector. Book a place.

London. England

Farnborough.

Defense and Space. Then some sustainability and innovation elements. Farnborough and Paris take place each in the opposite year, with each taking place once in two years. So, 2022 was Farnborough, 2023 will be Paris. Because they serve the same markets and those that exhibit or put on shows, don’t have budgets to do two a year.

The Zuhai Air Show (Airshow-China)

November 2022 is the next one. Covid really hurt Air Shows for obvious reasons so we will be looking closely at the Zuhai show this year and Paris next year. In the hope that international presence reflects the bounce back.

China is now the biggest domestic air travel market, so this show should be on your list. China is also an aircraft manufacturer, including Airbus final assembly A320’s. They also build 95% of the world’s drone and UAS systems .

Singapore Air Show

This is a show for the Far East and Pacific regions. This show has grown in stature as the aerospace and airline business has grown over the years. Not as big as it once was but still strong.

Memorable Life Experience

So that’s the commercial end of things. But who cares about money really? What we want is the fastest, the oldest, the coolest and the most hair-raising air show experience we can see from the comfort of an outdoor hacienda.

Sun-n-Fun Aerospace Expo (Florida, USA)

Started in ’74 as an enthusiasts meet. Now it has seating for 200,000 visitors . What is known as Aviation’s “Spring Break”. If Warbirds, Vintage, and aerobatics are your thing, then go to Florida. They are also non-profit and support charities and education initiatives such as apprenticeships. A big thumbs up from us.

Paris Air Show

Bournemouth Air Festival (Bournemouth, Uk)

South of England, so there is a solid 15% chance of sunshine. But who cares when you have Harriers, Typhoons, and the newest Aviation Military platforms they can buy from the Americans. But what we really want to see here is the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial flight (BBMF at www.raf.mod.uk ) featuring the Spitfire

The single greatest, most beautiful flying machine ever designed and built. It’s mystique and legend only growing with each passing year. To see it in the flesh my friends, it will bring a lump to your throat.

air show travel

Miramar Air Show (San Diego, USA)

Top Gun! … “You mean Top Gun – Maverick? ” Whatever Gen Z’er. If you’ve never been to San Diego, then shame on you. But those of you who have, especially if you’ve taken a walk over at La Jolla, you will be treated to a lot of military hardware heading out over the bay for exercises.

There’s also the www.midway.org museum at the marina that has enough historical aircraft to make the visit worthwhile. But Miramar has the Blue Angels, the Knights, the Red Arrows and as much gun metal grey as the entire family can handle.

Abbotsford Air Show (Abbotsford, Canada)

Canada’s Largest Air show. Located conveniently in the outskirts of Vancouver near to the US border, it attracts 125,000 spectators to watch all the world’s top air performers do their thing including the Canadian Snowbirds, The Skyhawks, the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels

I have been to Canada many times, the Kelowna valley being my favorite. But it’s the people I like most. Then their beverage bar.

AirVenture Oshkosh (Oshkosh, Wisconsin)

Now the US has a lot of air shows. And we expect we might take some flak for

a) Not mentioning some and

b) putting AirVenture at the end.

So, a quick note one AirVenture, which does look like a blast . There’s lots of things going on, day and night, and there are a lot of things to do besides watching the show. The parking fields look good and if you want to see that grey metal up close then this could well be the most memorable life experience you could have. We will go there someday and if we do, we might just do a whole piece on AirVenture.

For 38-years, at the end of March or April ,  the skies above Lakeland, Florida have filled with planes from around the globe for the Sun 'n Fun International Fly-In and Expo . From top Military and civilian teams and individual air show performers to exhibitors showcasing the latest planes on the market, if you like aviation, then Central Florida is the place to be each April. You’ll also find planes and pilots for ultralights and kit planes to float planes. And, there are plenty of people that will take you up for a flight in all kinds of aircraft.

Every July, the Dayton Air Show , in Dayton, OH, features demos and flybys that span all eras of flight, from a replica of the Wright Brother’s B Flyer to the vector-shaped USAF B-2 stealth bomber. Some of the coolest performers are the Tora Tora Tora team that reenacts the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 with fiery explosions and Japanese Zero’s. A Red Bull stunt helicopter and a Hall of Fame stunt airplane pilot named Sean Tucker (a regular on the airshow circuit), will leave you breathless with their physics-defying tricks. And for a real taste of the action, take a ride on Huey and Cobra helicopters.

Every July, more than 10,000 private pilots warm up their engines to make their annual pilgrimage to the Oshkosh EAA AirVenture Show . Spectators converge on Wisconsin’s Whitman Regional Airport to celebrate the fact that flying planes, of any kind, from a basic Piper Cub to a stealthy F22 Raptor, is cool. You’ll talk flying, tell tall flying tales, admire other pilot’s skills and planes, watch movies about pilots, and get to see the latest in experimental aircraft. And, if you’re in the market for or have the desire to build your own plane, then this is your heaven.

For 48 years, pilots have been lining up to go head to head at the Reno Air Races in Nevada. Six classes of aircraft manned by pilots with nerves of steel and a true “need for speed” fill the air above Reno’s Stead Field for five days in mid-September. Civilian, amateur and ex-military pilots race around courses from 3 to 8 miles in length and defined by pylons. Aerobatic pilots try to keep spectators in their seats between races, When you do move around, get a close look at, and even touch, some of the military’s top aeronautical technology on display on the airfield, which sit alongside some of the best examples of planes that define our aviation heritage.

If it flies and is included in the aviation arsenal of the US Navy, Air Force, Marines or Army it’ll take to the sky at the Joint Base Andrews Air Show in September. This airshow takes place at Andrews Air Force Base just east of Washington, DC, which houses Air Force One. And when the active military aren’t aloft, aerobatic performers and heritage flights with planes from 4 decades of military flight history may leave you with a crick in your neck, and a sense of awe.

Miramar Air Show (San Diego, CA)

Usually at the end of September or early October, the Miramar Air Show demonstrates just why US military pilots dominate the world’s airspace. It all takes place at one of the sites where the 1980’s flim Top Gun was filmed. The US Navy Blue Angels provide aerial acrobatics. Other aircraft from the modern US arsenal, such as the tank killing A-10 Thunderbolt, and the F15 Eagle, F16 Fighting Falcon, and F22 Raptor fighter jets, perform and are on display next to past warbirds like the P51 Mustang, the A1 Skyraider, F4 Phantom and TBM Avenger. Static displays of airplanes, and biplane aerobatics will keep your eye to the sky.

The first performance of the show was in 1972, when six replica Japanese aircraft used in the movie of the same name were donated to the CAF.

It is the longest continuously performing non-military air show act in the U.S., according to the CAF.

Also featured were static displays, including a C-5M Super Galaxy, a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter, F-16 Fighting Falcons and an Abrams M1A2 tank.

The static displays give community members the opportunity to see inside some of the military’s most important assets and talk to the troops who use and maintain them.

10 best marathons in the United States for 2024

USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards logo

Best Marathon (2024) April 3, 2024

The United States hosts around 1,000 marathons every year, the largest of which see tens of thousands of endurance runners crossing the finish line and conquering the grueling 26.2-mile distance.

To find the top races, USA TODAY 10Best editors and a panel of experts made their nominations, then readers voted for their favorites. Here are the 10 best marathons across the nation for 2024.

Hatfield McCoy Marathon

No. 10: Hatfield McCoy Marathon - Williamson, West Virginia

The longest-running marathon in the states of Kentucky and West Virginia is the popular Hatfield McCoy Marathon, which traverses both states on its journey. Named after the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud, the challenging course takes runners through the rugged and beautiful Appalachian Mountains and includes both road and trail sections.

Honolulu Marathon

No. 9: Honolulu Marathon - Honolulu, Hawaii

After New York, Chicago, and Boston, this is the fourth largest marathon in the United States. It's tropically scenic and warm, and there's no time limit, so everyone is allowed to finish, making it a great first-time marathon race. The course runs through downtown Honolulu and its famed Christmas lights, through Waikiki and up around Diamond Head, to a stunning oceanside finish in Kapiolani Park. The post-race treats are also legendary, with everyone getting fresh Hawaiian malasadas (scrumptious local versions of donuts dusted with sugar).

Bank of America Chicago Marathon

No. 8: Bank of America Chicago Marathon - Chicago, Illinois

One of the six World Marathon Majors, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is typically held on the second Sunday in October. The flat, fast course takes runners past iconic Chicago landmarks on its journey through 29 neighborhoods, starting and finishing in Grant Park. This popular race attracts more than a million spectators each year.

Shiprock Marathon

No. 7: Shiprock Marathon - Shiprock, New Mexico

Held the first weekend of May, the Shiprock Marathon takes runners through the rugged desert landscapes of the Navajo Nation. Along the way, participants enjoy a variety of live music to motivate runners, adding to this unique and memorable running experience.

CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon

No. 6: CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon - Indianapolis, Indiana

CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is a good qualifying event, as the USATF-certified course is flat and fast. You'll run through the heart of Indianapolis' historic neighborhoods and enjoy Hoosier hospitality before finishing near the Indiana State House. With a November date, you'll get crisp fall weather, and the final stretch is all downhill, so this is a great marathon for first-time long-distance aspirants.

Coast Guard Marathon

No. 5: Coast Guard Marathon - Elizabeth City, North Carolina

If you've ever wanted a running tour of a military base, this one's for you. The Coast Guard Marathon runs through the U.S. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, along the Pasquotank riverfront, and even takes participants on the runway and around one of the last standing WWII airship hangars. Registration is open to both military personnel and civilians.

Big Sur International Marathon

No. 4: Big Sur International Marathon - Big Sur, California

Famed for its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged coastline, and picturesque scenery, the Big Sur International Marathon is a favorite among runners and nature lovers alike. In addition to breathtaking vistas, this challenging course features significant elevation changes on its route from Big Sur, north along Highway 1, to the finish line in Carmel. The USATF-certified course has been called “one of the jewels of American running.”

Marine Corps Marathon

No. 3: Marine Corps Marathon - Arlington, Virginia

Known as "The People's Marathon," the Marine Corps Marathon honors the dedication and sacrifice of the United States Armed Forces. The race is known for its rich history and is one of the largest marathons in the world. With a course that winds through the streets of Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., the route passes many of the area's famous landmarks and monuments, including the National Mall and the U.S. Capitol.

New York City Marathon

No. 2: New York City Marathon - New York City, New York

Known for its enthusiastic crowd support, the famous New York City Marathon embodies the spirit and energy of the city where it takes place. A celebration of diversity and inclusivity, runners from all over the world come together to participate in this iconic event. The course takes runners through all five boroughs of the city, starting in Staten Island and finishing in Central Park. Along the way, runners pass by many of the city's famous landmarks, including the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Empire State Building, and Times Square.

Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon

No. 1: Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon - Cincinnati, Ohio

The Flying Pig Marathon is loved by runners, and for good reason. It's fun, with pig motifs used everywhere, from the "pig pen" corrals where different speed groups are segregated, to crossing the "finish swine" and attending the post-race party with pizza and beer. The course is also super attractive, albeit hilly, running through the most diverse and scenic neighborhoods of Cincinnati and surrounding townships, and alongside the Ohio River. Finishers get medals and mylar blankets to go with all the post-pig party refreshments.

Head coach and creator of the Badass Lady Gang, Kelly Roberts’ pre-BALG fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn’t until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the NYC half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the global women’s running community Badass Lady Gang was born. BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. Kelly’s philosophy measures success by confidence gained, not pounds lost. If you aren’t having fun, it’s time to pivot. Kelly is an RRCA certified coach and has completed Dr. Stacy Sims ‘Women Are Not Small Men’ certification course helping coaches better serve their female athletes. Over the years Kelly has coached thousands of women from brand new runners to those chasing Boston marathon qualifying times, appeared on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine, and created a worldwide body image empowerment movement called the Sports Bra Squad. I’ve been flying to Buenos Aires (EZE) with Delta. Not had any issues other than long layover between arrival and departure at domestic airport.

Arrival time with Aerolineas Argentina (AA) is better than Delta so I’m considering trying them.

Maybe read some reviews.

Keep in mind, that many people rather write a review, if something went bad and a bit less, when everything went fine.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

Sarah Maddox has been with CBS News since 2019. She works as an associate producer for CBS News Live.
