What is an all-inclusive resort?
Portugal all-inclusive resorts provide you more for your money and reduce your planning stress. While their exact offerings will vary, you can usually expect meals and drinks to be included with your room rate, often with unlimited options. That’s what we call a relaxing vacation!
Many resorts also include activities, plus evening entertainment options such as live shows or theme parties. Tips and gratuities are usually included too (though still welcome).
Does all-inclusive include alcohol?
Most all-inclusive resorts in Portugal will include alcohol in their all-inclusive rates. However, they may charge extra for things like premium or imported spirits. Always check the details of your resort before booking, as there are some that do not include alcoholic beverages.
Does “all-inclusive” include flights to Portugal?
All-inclusive resort rates typically do not include flights. Your room rate includes only what you need once you’ve landed, like food, drinks, and entertainment. That’s where Travelocity’s all-inclusive packages come in. You can bundle your all-inclusive accommodation and your flight to Portugal to get you the best rate—and peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of.
Are all-inclusive trips to Portugal worth it?
All-inclusive vacations to Portugal are well worth the up-front cost. Once you’ve booked your Portugal resort, you don’t have to think about the word “budget” again. Everything you need is nearby, from delicious restaurants to daily activities, and night-time entertainment. There’s no limit to your fun, and you never have to watch your spending, because it’s all included.

Sardinia has been an overlooked Mediterranean island, as it lies between Italian Sicily and French Corsica. But it is an amazing holiday destination, great for kids, which is packed full of amazing sights and activities, with a great climate. Whether you've chosen to visit Sardinia to check out Phoenician or Roman ruins, or just to soak up some sun and enjoy some excellent Sardinian wines, you're sure to have a great time.
As a relatively large autonomous island, Sardinia presents a huge range of activities for a family holiday. From the sunbathing perfection of its Mediterranean beaches to the exploration of sites such as Su Nuraxi di Barumini - a building structure dating from the Megalithic period - there is something to interest everybody. About a quarter of the island is designated as either a National Park or other protected reserve territory, so much of the environment is unspoiled and the naturalists in your family can have a great time spotting incredibly rare creatures such as the Sardinian Fox or the Mediterranean Monk Seal. It's definitely a destination for fans of the great outdoors, but with such a diverse amount of wildlife on display, no one can fail to be captivated by the Sardinian landscape.
Popular destinations for All Inclusive Resorts
Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, west of the Mediterranean. Madeira has many visitors each year, and has some great landscapes, gardens, flowers, and sublime tropical climate.
Madeira has a number of beaches scattered around its coastline. Among the more notable of these is Calheta which is one of the top resorts in Madeira. This beach has golden sands, crystal clear waters, and a marina. The beach is also good for a variety of water sports such as canoeing and windsurfing. Alternatively, at Lido there is a large and small outdoor seawater swimming pool, which also has direct sea access. Ponta Gorda also has similar outdoor seawater pools. For golf fans Madeira Island also has a few golf courses. At Funchal there is the Palheiro Golf Course, while the Santo da Serra overlooks the bay of Machico.

How We Chose The Resorts
We’ve evaluated every all-inclusive resort in Portugal based on our personal experience and by conducting additional research.
We have carefully reviewed the amenities at each property, their rooms, dining options, onsite activities for families, and things to do nearby.
What’s more, we considered other elements, like the resort’s architecture, location, notable inclusions, reputation, and quality of service.
Additionally, we took customer reviews and recent awards into consideration when choosing the resorts to include in this list.

Best All-Inclusive Resorts in Portugal
Take a look at the best all-inclusive resorts in Portugal.
Hotel Riu Palace Madeira
Canico, madeira.
This huge three-pearl, 327-room resort hotel is located in Canico de Baixo, a traditional Madeiran village on the southeast coast. It's only 10- to 15-minute drive from the airport and Funchal, and has a gorgeous beachfront location with stunning ocean views. Most popular with families and holidaymakers, the property offers all-inclusive and half-board rates. Rooms are dated, though they include modern amenities and furnished balconies; some with sea views. Facilities include three pools, two restaurants, several bars, a full-service spa, beauty salon, fitness center, tennis court, and game room. There's a kids' club with daily activities, plus nightly entertainment. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Travelers looking for a more romantic atmosphere might like Quinta Splendida, which adds a Thai restaurant and free spa access.
3HB Clube Humbria
Olhos de agua, faro district, algarve, portugal.
Enotel Lido Madeira
Funchal, madeira.
Funchal is known for its steep hills, but this 317-room, upper-middle-range all-inclusive is in a walkable area with access to the oceanfront promenade. The hotel's exterior resembles a cruise liner, and the large outdoor pool, kiddy pool, and massive deck all face the ocean. The spa's saltwater pool has romantic cave-style designs and the spacious gym offers spin classes. The hotel stands out as one of the only all-inclusive options in Funchal (and the best); in addition to the main buffet restaurant with live cooking stations, there are Japanese, Italian, and Madeiran theme restaurants. Bars offer live entertainment. Rooms are modest with simple (but comfy) design and all have full or partial sea views from balconies; some suites have kitchens. The Melia Madeira Mare Resort & Spa offers more modern rooms, but doesn’t have all-inclusive rates.
Hotel Riu Guarana
Pestana Colombos Premium Club Beach Resort
Porto santo island, madeira islands, portugal.
The Pestana Colombos Premium Club is an upscale, all-inclusive resort characterized by chic, minimalist design set on the south coast of Porto Santo island. Rooms are fresh and contemporary, with romantic couples-friendly touches as well as larger suites and villas for families and groups. Indoor and outdoor pools provide plenty of water-based relaxation, as does the adjacent sandy beach (though beach beds are pricey). Facilities are shared with the sister Pestana Porto Santo Beach Resort, which has better evening entertainment and is home to the kids' club, but rooms are arguably a bit more stylish here.
Hotel Oriental
Praia da rocha, faro district, algarve, portugal.
The 84-room Hotel Oriental is an upper-middle-range option located right on Praia da Rocha. Although it's in a quieter area, it's only a five-minute walk to numerous restaurants, pubs, and shops to the west. Dining gets mixed reviews, and all-inclusive rates are available, but there are plenty of options close at hand. Rooms are a mix of lovely, modern spaces and some that are past their prime. All have furnished balconies or terraces, and some have full views of the beautiful beach or kitchenettes. The pool and lawn provide relaxing places to hang out, and kids get their own pool and a small playground. Travelers looking for lower rates in a beachfront hotel could check out the nearby Hotel da Rocha, although it offers less for families.
Vila Galé Albacora
Tavira, faro district, algarve, portugal.
Vila Gale Albacora is a three-and-a-half-pearl hotel in the Ria Formosa Natural Park overlooking Tavira Island. It's a little off the beaten path, and a 10-minute drive into Tavira's old town, but the atmosphere here is quiet and secluded. The top-notch leisure facilities include a large freeform outdoor pool, children's pool, indoor pool, fitness center, kids' club, scuba diving center, and kayak rental. A free shuttle runs to Tavira center and a boat (for a fee) goes to Tavira Island beach. The 162 simple, modern rooms come with balconies or terraces, some overlooking the river. All include free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs. Alternatively, the hotel's sister property, Vila Gale Tavira, is located right in Tavira, though is far more dated.
Vila Gale Santa Cruz
Santa cruz, madeira.
Vila Gale Santa Cruz is a three-and-a-half-pearl oceanfront resort in the quiet village of Santa Cruz, about a 20-minute drive from Funchal. With no nightlife and little entertainment, the atmosphere here is about relaxation and recreation. A pebble-and-stone beach, large outdoor pool with seasonal poolside bar, children's pool, small kids' club, indoor pool, and spa are highlights. There are buffet and a la carte dining options, and all-inclusive rates are available. The resort also runs a thrice-daily shuttle to Funchal. The 262 clean rooms all have balconies, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Some have sea or airport runway views, and while plane noise is unavoidable, it's generally not bothersome. Couples who want a similarly relaxed resort that's closer to Funchal might consider Porto Santa Maria Hotel (Porto Bay) instead.
Pestana Porto Santo All Inclusive
The 328-room Pestana Porto Santo Beach Resort is an upscale, all-inclusive hotel popular with families and package operators set on Porto Santo island's picturesque golden beach. The resort itself, while not particularly stylish, is impeccably well-presented and clean throughout with all the facilities you'd expect from a high-end vacation complex. Rooms -- ranging from pool-view Standard Rooms to spacious villas -- are pleasant and modern, though sometimes lacking key amenities (only some have free Wi-Fi access and all lack tea/coffee facilities). The complex includes large, freeform pools, a spa, outdoor tennis courts, and a kids' club, and playground. A fee for beach loungers irks some guests, as do lines for dining at peak times. The resort is slightly less expensive than nearby sister property Pestana Colombos Premium Club and has a more Mediterranean flavor.
Savoy Calheta Beach
Calheta, madeira.
The Savoy Calheta Beach isn't the only hotel in town on the oceanfront, but it's the only one that's right on Calheta Beach. It also has an outdoor pool, a spa with a small indoor pool, and an outdoor playground. Its upper-middle-range rooms have a contemporary beach decor and there's an annex with family-friendly apartments equipped with kitchenettes. All-inclusive rates cover food and limited beverages at two restaurants and three bars. Note that parking, premium beverages, and use of in-room safes cost extra. For couples without kids, it's worth comparing to the more upscale Saccharum Hotel Resort & Spa, which can have even cheaper rates, though it's not an all-inclusive hotel.
Adriana Beach Club Hotel Resort
The Adriana Beach Club is a sprawling, three-pearl resort just a stone’s throw from the golden sands of Praia do Poco Velho. This all-inclusive resort is a 30-minute drive from Albufeira, although it aims to provide for its guests’ every needs on site. The resort has two big pools -- one indoors and the other set in a sunny outdoor terrace -- three buffet restaurants and two bars, a mini-golf course and a beach volleyball court, and a fun adventure playground for kids. That said, the resort’s 438 rooms have some dated decor, and bathrooms need a revamp. They do, however, have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, AC, and outdoor spaces. Travelers looking for sleeker digs might want to try the Salgados Palm Village Apartments & Suites.
3HB Falesia Mar
The Luna Falesia Mar is a mid-range apartment complex spread over 15 blocks in its own private clifftop enclave. Set in the peaceful resort town of Olhos de Agua means that there's not a great deal in the immediate surroundings, though lovely beaches are accessible on foot. Its 240 apartments are roomy and equipped with basic cooking facilities, but they have dated furnishings and tube-style TVs. Most guests are on the all-inclusive option that includes decent if a bit limited buffet meals. A major gripe is the small swimming pool, which can get crowded during peak season, though kids do have a small separate pool. Neighboring Porto Bay Falesia has a much bigger pool and better sea views, though it's also more expensive.
Vila Gale Atlantico
Gale, faro district, algarve, portugal.
The three-pearl Vila Gale Atlantico is a quiet, pleasant property well outside the hustle and bustle in Albufeira, and within eyeshot of the beach. Rooms have been given a subtle overhaul and have a generically modern look (as of 2016). They also include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and kitchenettes, and some have up to two bedrooms. All-inclusive rates are available and the buffets are well-liked. A popular pool area includes a separate kids' pool with slides, and there's a game room as well. The beach is less than a 10-minute walk away, though many guests simply hang around on-site as there's nothing else nearby. Alternatively, travelers who prize location over style might consider Hotel Rocamar, which overlooks Albufeira's beach and is in the old town. Rates there are also often lower.
Vale da Lapa Resort & SPA
Carvoeiro, faro district, algarve, portugal.
The three-and-a-half-pearl Vale da Lapa Resort & SPA has the benefit of wide open landscaping on the edge of Carvoeiro, with pleasant views of the gardens and mountains in the distance. It's too far from attractions in Carvoeiro to walk to anything, but the resort does have plenty to do on-site, including a nine-hole putting green, a full-service spa, and a kids' club. The 85 suites and Villas are modern and sharp, and include full kitchens, making them ideal for those looking for an upscale but affordable stay. All-inclusive rates are available, too. Travelers may want to also consider the nearby Monte Santo Resort, which is a little pricier but has more impressive amenities. Rooms there are a bit jazzier, though have some dated elements.
Dom Pedro Vilamoura
Vilamoura, faro district, algarve, portugal.
The 266-room Dom Pedro Golf Resort is an upper-middle-range hotel a short walk from the beach and the lively Vilamoura marina. Rooms are clean and have expansive views, stocked minibars, and flat-screen TVs, but decor is dated, and extra fees for Wi-Fi and safes may be annoying to some. The outdoor pool is large and appealing, and the hotel has a private area on Vilamoura Beach complete with a restaurant, loungers, and umbrellas. There are also a spa with an indoor pool and a gym, several restaurants serving decent food, and kid-friendly amenities such as a kiddy pool, a playground, and a kids’ club. Sister property Dom Pedro Marina has lower rates and a similar location, but its rooms are a little more basic.

More information about Portugal
Located in southwestern Europe and home to a sweeping Atlantic coastline of more than 800 kilometers , Portugal is a thrilling travel destination, whether you are planning a city-break , a sightseeing tour or an all-inclusive beach vacation. Although it shares the Iberian Peninsula with Spain , Portugal has its own unique history and culture, which is sure to surprise and enchant anyone who takes a trip to Portugal.
As well as the western part of the Iberian Peninsula , the Azores Archipelago and the island of Madeira are also part of Portugal , one of the oldest European nations. Boasting a diverse landscape, a tour of Portugal will take you from windswept Atlantic beaches to the verdant mountains of the north and the near-desert landscape of the Alentejo region. On a vacation to Portuga l, you can go surfing, explore hilltop villages, soak up the nightlife in the cities or simply kick-back on the golden sand beaches of the Algarve.
The historic capital of Lisbon is famed for its landmarks and vintage tram system, but other notable cities to discover on a tour of Portugal include ancient Porto , the university city of Coimbra , spiritual Fatima, coastal Faro and Funcha l, which is the capital of Madeira. Portugal’s most famous beach destination is the Algarve, situated in the south of the country, with towns such as Lagos and Albufeira establishing themselves as some of the best-loved beach vacation destinations in Portugal.
Portuguese is the official language and Portugal is well-known for its fascinating cultural heritage and world-class gastronomy. Portugal is proud of its gastronomic heritage and any trip to Portugal is sure to be filled with mouth-watering delights, such as the creamy Pastel de nata , velvety Port wine from the Douro Valley and some of the best seafood in the world, fresh from the Atlantic Ocean . Needless to say, all foodies should travel to Portugal!
The home of the melancholic melodies of Fado , iconic azulejos glazed tiles and festivals such as Santo António, São Pedro and São João , Portugal’s rich cultural heritage is ever-present, whether you’re admiring the hand-embroidered skirts of Nazare’s fishermen or deciphering the stories painted onto the azulejos tiles of the breathtaking Chapel of Souls in Porto.
History of Portugal
As one of the oldest nations in Europe , Portugal is a treasure trove of historic landmarks that tell the stories of the events, cultures and traditions that shaped this fascinating country. The territory of Portugal has been inhabited since prehistoric times, firstly by Celtic peoples, followed by Ancient Greeks , Romans , Visigoths and the Moors. As a result of the early Christian Reconquest, Portugal was first founded as a nation in the year 868. The early history of this nation is still evident in a number of ancient sites such as the prehistoric rock art of the Coa Valley , the medieval Castle of Moors in Sintra and the Roman architecture of Evora . Travelling to Portugal is a journey through a diverse and eventful history.
Perhaps the most famous era in the country’s long heritage is between the 15th and 18th centuries , a period dubbed the ‘Age of Discovery’ . During these centuries Portugal rose to prominence as a great maritime and commercial empire. After discovering the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores , Madeira and Cape Verde , Portuguese explorers ventured as far afield as Africa, Asia and South America, colonising countries such as Brazil and sending missionaries as far afield as China and Japan . In 1498 the great explorer Vasco da Gama became the first European to reach India by sea, a source of immense pride to the Portuguese people and marking the beginning of a very prosperous time in the nation’s history and the beginning of the Portuguese Renaissance.
If you visit Portugal you’ll find many of the most elegant and opulent landmarks can be traced back to this period in the countries history. The Belem Tower in Lisbon is an ornate symbol of Portugal’s maritime prowess, once acting as the ceremonial gateway to the city during the height of Portugal’s trading empire. If you visit Portugal you’ll be able to trace the impact of this era in the grand squares, opulent palaces and historic trading ports found throughout the country.
A number of events contributed to the end of Portugal’s prosperous ‘ Age of Discovery ’ such as the devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755 , the Napoleonic Wars and the independence of Brazil in the early 19th-century. Revolution came to Portugal in 1910 when the monarchy was deposed and replaced by the democratic Portuguese First Republic . An authoritarian regime, known as the Estado Novo was later established in 1933 and endured until 1974 when democracy was finally restored after the Carnation Revolution. This was the end of Portugal’s colonial legacy as almost all the overseas territories were granted independence, ending one of the longest-lived empires in history.
Nature in Portugal
Portugal has a Mediterranean climate , despite its location on the Atlantic Ocean , and is one of the warmest countries in Europe , with mild winters and long, hot summers. The best time to visit Portugal depends on your intentions, as the summer might be too hot for sightseeing but perfect for lounging on the idyllic beaches of the Algarve region. Of course, the further south you travel, the warmer and drier the weather will become.
Portugal is awash with natural beauty, from the towering mountains of Geres to the verdant Azores Islands and the turquoise waters of the Algarve, boasting a rich and diverse array of landscapes. As a meeting point between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic , it also boasts rich biodiversity, in both flora and fauna. Some of Portugal’s best-known species include the fearsome Portuguese Man O’War and the beautiful Iberian Lynx. Portugal also plays host to a large number of migratory birds , found in abundance around the marshes of the Algarve and the Douro River Valley.
If you travel to Portugal you’ll find plenty of areas of outstanding natural beauty if you venture from the usual cities and beach destinations. The Serra da Estrela Natural Park is one of the most spectacular, home to the Serra da Estrela Mountain, reaching 1,993 meters a bove sea level. It is also the only place in Portugal where you can go skiing, as in the winter months this immaculate landscape is blanketed in a thick covering of white snow, perfect for winter sports enthusiasts. This natural park is also excellent for trekking, horse-riding or mountain biking and has 375km of marked trails to suit all levels.
The Peneda-Geres National Park is another highlight to include on a trip to Portugal . The largest national park in the country, this haven of untouched wilderness is situated in northern Portugal. Here, walking and hiking trails lead you through forests, beside picturesque rivers, past waterfalls and up granite mountains.
Another must-see natural attraction to visit on a tour of Portugal is Cabo de Sao Vincente, the most southwesterly tip of Europe. This rocky peninsula boasts breathtaking views out into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean and evokes memories of the Portuguese maritime explorers of days gone by, who would have passed this landmark on their way to discover unknown lands.
Culture of Portugal
With centuries of history, Portugal has a distinct and colorful national culture. Some of the most characteristic cultural treasures to discover on a vacation to Portugal include the moving musical tradition of Fado , born out of the old fishing songs of yesteryear, fortified Port wine and a number of delicate handicrafts such as embroidery and bobbin lace.
Portugal is a Roman Catholic country, and although religion is no longer at the forefront of society in Portugal, there are still countless annual festivals in honour of various saints and important religious events. Pilgrimage is also a long-standing part of Portuguese culture, with thousands making the devoted walk to the Sanctuary Of Our Lady Of Fatima every year. In fact, if you see walkers by the side of the road wearing yellow jackets, you can safely guess that they are on their way to the holy city of Fatima , a place of supreme importance to followers of the Catholic faith, and a fascinating place to visit if you are travelling to Portugal.
Portuguese people are known for their warm hospitality towards visitors, so don’t be surprised if you are offered a drink within mere moments of meeting a new Portuguese friend! Having a busy social life is of great value in Portuguese culture and whether you’re spending an evening bar-hopping in Lisbon or enjoying a romantic meal at a beach-side taverna in the Algarve, you’ll always find groups of Portuguese families or friends, eating, drinking and enjoying each other’s company late into the evening. In fact, it’s said that a night out in Portugal only ends when the sun comes up!
Port wine has been produced in Portugal since the 17th-century from grapes grown in the fertile Douro Valley before being transported upriver to the charming city of Porto . Here, countless wine cellars keep the wine in barrels, where the ageing process takes at least two years. This is a proud part of Portuguese culture and all the port in the world is produced in Porto. You cannot travel to Portugal without sampling these delicious tipples, be it velvety port wine or refreshing vihno verde , literally green wine, made from young grapes.
Just as important as Portugal’s wine-making heritage is the nation’s fierce love of gastronomy. A mouth-watering national cuisine, Portuguese food is some of the best in Europe. Whether you’re a fan of sweet pastries or prefer a fresh catch of cod , a firm favorite on Portuguese menus, Portugal doesn’t disappoint with its culinary culture. Portuguese cuisine is simple, yet delicious and with such a bountiful ocean and fertile countryside, produce is almost always fresh and delicious. Portuguese gastronomy is sure to be the star attraction of the trip to Portugal , especially if you consider yourself a foodie.
Travel to Portugal to experience a vibrant country, filled with diverse sights and landscapes, the result of centuries of cultural heritage. On a vacation to Portugal , you can kick-back on sunkissed beaches, explore rugged landscapes, sample some of the finest wines on earth or take in the sights of the major cities. There’s something for everyone to explore on a package tour of Portugal.

Whether you've chosen to visit Sardinia to check out Phoenician or Roman ruins, or just to soak up some sun and enjoy some excellent Sardinian wines, you're sure to have a great time.
