This Amazon Prime Deal Is Giving Students $25 Flights Home for the Holidays

The holidays are nearly here and students heading home for the season can now score flights for just $25 thanks to a partnership between Amazon Prime and StudentUniverse.

The super discounted tickets are available for Prime Student members (both new and current) to domestic locations across the United States in all 50 states and Washington D.C., the company told Travel + Leisure . As part of the promotion, the company will give away 3,000 $25 tickets — 1,000 each day — from Dec. 5 through Dec. 7.

“As a mom to a first-year college student, I am excited to have my son home for the holidays,” Carmen Nestares, the vice president of U.S. Prime and marketing tech at Amazon, said in a statement shared with T+L. “And as travel costs continue to rise, we're happy to help make flying more affordable for Prime Students who want to spend this important time with family and friends. It's another way we're delivering incredible savings, value, and convenience to our Prime Student members each year.”

To score the cheap flights, Prime Student members can go online at 6 a.m. PT on Dec. 5, and at midnight PT on Dec. 6 and Dec. 7. Travelers who score the promotional flights will be able to book tickets for outbound travel between Dec. 8 and Dec. 25, and return travel between Dec. 8 and Jan. 14, 2024.

Each student is only allowed to book one flight for $25, for a maximum discounted rate of up to $500. 

Students who aren’t able to snag one of the special $25 flights can still save, however, by using the promo code “PRIME25” to take $25 off any domestic flights by booking through 11:59 p.m. PT on Dec. 8.

Beyond the flight deal, travelers looking to save some money should consider traveling on Dec. 18 for Christmas, which is the least expensive day around the holiday.

Through Dec. 7, Amazon Prime Student members can book domestic flights anywhere in the U.S. (based on availability and route) for just $25 through a promotion with Student Universe.

There are two catches with this deal. Tickets are capped at the first 1,000 people. Also, tickets are distributed daily starting at midnight PST through Dec. 7 for travel through mid-January.

The $25 fares are available for both one-way and round-trip flights.

For Dec. 6, tickets were already sold out by midmorning. Be sure to activate the offer and be at your computer and logged into your account by midnight PST Dec. 7 to attempt to take advantage of this deal. If you can't find a $25 flight, note that other deals may be available.

Maximize your purchase

Students ages 18 to 24 can try Prime for free for six months before paying $69 per year or $7.49 per month. Prime Student members can also get a complimentary Grubhub+ membership for one year for $0 delivery, 5% back on pickup orders and special member promos.

If you book this deal, use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases. For Amazon purchases specifically, consider:

Students can score holiday flights home for just $25 – for these 3 days only

For many students, purchasing big items such as plane tickets can feel like a stretch to their budgets, especially when it comes to inflated holiday pricing .

For the first time ever, three thousand lucky students who have Amazon Prime memberships have the chance to score domestic round-trip airfare as low as $25, for savings up to $500, according to an announcement on Thursday.

Students can thank a partnership between Amazon and StudentUniverse, a travel booking platform for youth and students, for the deal .

"As travel costs continue to rise, we're happy to help make flying more affordable for Prime Students who want to spend this important time with family and friends," said Carmen Nestares, vice president of U.S. Prime and Marketing Tech at Amazon in a statement.

The promotion is available starting Tuesday, Dec. 5 until Thursday, Dec. 7. Each day at 6 a.m. for those three days, a limited number of 1,000 tickets will drop.

Prime Student members can go to the Prime Student x Student Universe portal to try to snag one of the tickets before they run out.

The deal is only available for outbound travel between Dec. 8 and Christmas, and inbound travel dates between Dec. 8 and Jan. 14, and for basic economy and main cabin fare only.

Here's how prime student members can book amazon's $25 holiday travel deal, plus other ways to save..

As college students prepare for end-of-semester exams, many of them are also packing their bags. 20% of American college students study out-of-state and may have to board a plane to spend the winter holidays with their families.

The good news is that it might be a little cheaper to fly home this year. With post-pandemic " revenge spending " subsided, flight costs have dropped — airline fares were down 13.2% in October 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . Nevertheless, flights can still be expensive , especially when squeezed into a student's tight budget .

If you plan on flying home for the holidays and haven't booked your ticket yet, you may be in luck. Amazon has partnered with StudentUniverse , an online travel agency specializing in discount student travel, to offer Prime Student members a limited number of $25 flights to and from home this holiday season.

Even if you can't take advantage of this amazing deal, CNBC Select shares other ways students can save money when flying home from college.

How to get a $25 flight with Prime Student

With this promotion, Prime Student members will have the opportunity to book one round trip or one-way domestic ticket through StudentUniverse for just $25.

This promotion will run from Dec. 5, through Dec. 7, 2023, with a total of 3,000 $25 flight tickets up for grabs across the three days. There will be 1,000 tickets made available each day starting at 6 a.m. PST on Dec. 5, 12 a.m. PST on Dec. 6 and 12 a.m. PST on Dec. 7 

If you're lucky enough to snag a ticket, you'll be able to fly anywhere within the U.S. and receive a discount rate of up to $500 off the current retail value of the ticket. The discounted tickets can be used for travel between mid-December and early January. Outbound travel can be anytime between Dec. 8 and Dec. 25, 2023, and inbound travel must be between Dec. 8, 2023 and Jan. 14, 2024.

Bookings and full terms and conditions will be available via the Prime Student x StudentUniverse page . Even after the $25 tickets run out, StudentUniverse will offer Prime Student members $25 off flights with a promotional code. Terms and conditions apply.

A Prime Student membership costs $69 per year and comes with benefits like complimentary expedited shipping, digital services like Amazon Music and Amazon Prime Video, deals at Whole Foods Market, early access to Lightning deals, free one-year membership to Grubhub+ and more.

If you're on the fence about signing up, but still want to take advantage of this promotion, Amazon offers a 6-month free trial of Prime Student. And, for a limited time, you don't have to be enrolled in college to be eligible for Amazon's student membership: you only have to verify that you are between 18 and 24 years old.

Other ways to save

If you're not lucky enough to take advantage of the limited-time Prime Student deal, there are still other ways to save on your flights.

Use flight search aggregators and deal websites

Search aggregators like Google Flights can be extremely helpful as they may offer calendars that allow the user to simultaneously compare prices between many dates. Some sites also offer price tracking, which alerts you when a certain flight's price drops. 

Depending on how you booked, you may be able to get money back if the price of your flight dropped after booking. For example, Expedia's Price Drop Protection add-on monitors the price of a flight from purchase to takeoff and automatically refunds you the difference between what you paid and the lowest fare.

Google Flights offers a similar feature for certain flights, while Capital One Travel automatically offers its price drop protection to all eligible cardholders . Just beware that every booking engine's price drop coverage works slightly differently and that this feature sometimes costs a small fee.

Of course, tracking flights and protecting your price makes the most sense if you start searching early. Scott Keyes, founder and chief flight expert at flight deal subscription service Going , previously told CNBC Select that the " goldilocks window " to book a domestic flight is three to seven months in advance .

Book with points and miles

Flight prices are higher during the holiday season than during the off-season. So, it's a good time to use any points or miles you may have earned on a credit card to book holiday travel, as Keyes recommended to CNBC Select.

Some student credit cards come with generous welcome bonuses that could help you cover a flight. Keep in mind that it's never a smart idea to get a credit card just for the welcome bonus when the requirements to earn that bonus are beyond your usual spending habits . If you can't pay off your balance, you may end up with high interest charges, essentially making your purchases even more expensive.

Look for student discounts

Beyond the limited-time $25 flight deal, Prime Student members have access to year-round travel savings through StudentUniverse . Members get up to 10% off already discounted flights (additional discount of at least $5), 10% back on hotels as an Amazon gift card and free premium customer support with every booking (a $7.95 value).

Some airlines offer student discounts when you book direct. For example, United offers a 5% discount to travelers between 18 and 23 when booking through the United mobile app with a MileagePlus® account.

Depending on how often you fly home, it could be worth considering a flight pass subscription from an airline like Alaska Airlines or Frontier. While each airline's subscription operates differently, they allow you to book a specified number of flights (or unlimited) for a flat fee.

Be flexible

Per Keyes' recommendations, the more flexibility you have the better. If possible, be flexible on your departure and return days, as well as airports — in some cases, it could be worth driving or taking a train to a nearby airport to score a better price.

Likewise, it's good to be flexible on flight times. According to Keyes, as well as Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report , morning flights have a lower chance of being delayed or canceled. Plus, they may sometimes be cheaper.

Students might think they don't have flexibility due to their final exam schedule, but you may be able to save significantly by leaving a few days earlier and taking your exam remotely or in advance. Certain professors are more amicable to this accommodation than others, so use your better judgment before making such requests.

Even though flights are cheaper than last year, they can still be heavy lifts for a student's wallet . Weigh all your options (and test your luck with Prime Student's $25 flight deal) before hitting the skies in a hurry.

Amazon Prime Student offers all of the benefits of Prime membership but at half of the cost. Here's how to qualify and sign up.

New subscribers to Amazon Prime Student can enjoy a six-month free trial and then Amazon Prime at 50% off the regular subscription price at the end of the trial.

To switch your membership or sign up for Amazon Prime Student, you'll need a valid .edu email. Navigate to the Prime Student page and log in or sign up. 

From there, Amazon will ask for an intended graduation year. If you're an active student with access to your university email, this offer is open to you.

Students can get $25 flights with an Amazon Prime membership

S tudents looking for flights during the holiday season are in luck, as Amazon just announced a limited-time deal where Prime Student members can book flights for only $25 through StudentUniverse . The catch? There will be limited tickets available at the $25 price. 

StudentUniverse, a travel service website that offers discounted rates for flights, hotels, and travel tours to students and young adults, is only offering 3,000 tickets available at the $25 price. The discount will last three days, and 1,000 tickets will be released each day, starting December 5 at 6 a.m. PST.

"Our trusted partnership with Amazon has allowed us to help thousands of Prime Student members access affordable flights and hotels around the world. Young adults aged 18-24 can also get a Prime Student membership, even if they're not enrolled in a higher education institution.

You can get free same-day delivery on qualifying items

If there's a product you want immediately, you can see if it's available for delivery the same day you order. To check a product's eligibility, look for delivery that's marked as "Prime FREE Same-Day" while shopping. Note that your order will need to contain over $35 of qualifying items. If not, you'll have to pay a small fee.

Amazon will deliver from morning until evening, so you won't have to worry about receiving your order at 3 a.m. Same-day delivery isn't available in all locations, so enter your ZIP code on the  Amazon Same-Day Delivery page to see if you're eligible.

Alexa offers extra discounts when you shop with an Echo

Schedule convenient shipping dates for packages

Everyone knows about Amazon's free two-day shipping, but another option is to choose a delivery date during checkout. Porch pirates  -- thieves who steal packages left in front of homes -- are no joke. Security site SafeWise told CNET that about 260 million packages were stolen from home exteriors in 2022. The  Amazon Key  in-garage delivery service can stop porch theft completely and is an exclusive benefit to all Amazon Prime members. 

When you use Amazon In-Garage Delivery, select  Key Delivery  at checkout. The garage kit is $25 right now and turns your garage into a smart garage. It works the same as in-home delivery so Amazon will do all the verifying for you.

Amazon employees can leave a package inside your house with Amazon Key.

Send gifts to other Prime members, even without addresses

An Amazon Prime feature lets you send someone a gift, even if you don't have their address . For instance, if you'd like to send a co-worker something for the holidays or their birthday but don't know what their address is, you can still send a gift. There's a catch: That person must also have a Prime account and you need either their phone number or email address associated with the account.

Just note that not every item on Amazon is eligible.

Share Amazon Prime perks with your family

If you've got another adult living in your household, like a significant other or friend, you can share your Prime membership with them. You'll still be able to keep your personal accounts separate, but you'll both have access to all the same Prime benefits. 

You can also share your account with up to four teens and up to four children in your household. While they'll have their own logins, you can still manage their profiles.
