How to Take a Day Trip From Antalya

First things first, let’s talk about the ways you can take a day trip. Antalya is a huge city and has a very reliable and trusty transport system. However, some of these day trips are quite a distance, so what is the best way to get to them?

If your chosen attraction is more than an hour or two driving distance outside of Antalya, your best bet would be to hire a car. While buses run regularly and are usually reliable, they are quite slow, and since you’re wanting to take a day trip you’ll want to save as much time as possible.

Some of these day trips require you to fly. Yes, on a plane! But don’t worry, since these attractions are hugely popular, airlines have scheduled flights from as early as 6 AM and returning as late as 11 PM, meaning you could actually fly across the country and see sites and come back the same day. Crazy, right?

Antalya Beach

Another great way to see day trips is through guided tours. This is the best way to see attractions for those who prefer a ‘no fuss’ way to travel since everything is planned and prepared for you.

In most cases, taking a tour from Antalya is safe and usually cover entrance fees and the cost of your transport, but this is not always the case. Do check with the tour company first to make sure, otherwise, it will be a very costly day out.

Tours will pick you up from your hotel, or a central location, for added convenience.

If you would prefer to do a DIY Antalya day trip, no problem! We prefer to work it out for ourselves too. Below in each of our recommended day trips, we have shared our recommended ‘way to get there’, which could be by bus, plane, hiring a car or tour.

It’s a good idea to see which attractions interest you the most, before thinking about transport as you might decide you’d like to take a couple of these day trips from Antalya.

The Best Day Trips from Antalya

So without further ado, here are the best day trips from Antalya, from historic landmarks to iconic natural settings, these attractions simply cannot be missed out on any Antalya itinerary .

Standing not far away from the ever-popular tourist town of Kusadasi, is one of the most iconic cities in the ancient region – Ephesus .

This oasis of archeological sites is one of the most famous landmarks in Turkey, known for its breathtaking 10th century BC Roman and Ancient Greek ruins.

The site covers almost 6.6 square km, featuring a wide collection of incredibly well-preserved Greco-Roman ruins. Ephesus was once the second largest city of the Roman Empire and therefore one of the most important; it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 .

Izmir-to-Ephesus-Tour

It’s home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – the spectacular Temple of Artemis. Over twice the size of any other similar ancient Greek temple sites, it took almost 120 years to complete, before being burnt down in 356 BC.

Other important sites in the complex are the Library of Celsus, Temple of Hadrian, and the mighty Roman Amphitheater capable of housing 24,000 spectators.

Although it’s a long distance from Antalya, it’s possible to travel there and back within a day if you are determined enough, though we recommend you stay overnight if you have more time at your disposal.

Ephesus is simply a must-see attraction in Turkey, especially if you only have a short time in the country and want to see some of the most iconic ancient sites!

  • Distance from Antalya: 411 km (255 miles)
  • Travel time: 5 hours by car, 7 hours by bus, 7 hours 25 minutes by train, 1 hour 10 minutes by plane plus an additional train for 1 hour.
  • Best way to get there: To get to Ephesus, you must first get to Izmir. From Izmir, there are three ways to get to Ephesus . Take a plane from Antalya to Izmir Airport (1 hour 10 minutes). From Izmir airport, there is a train (1 hour) directly to Selcuk. From Selcuk, you can walk for 10 minutes to Ephesus, or take a minibus or taxi. There are flights with SunExpress that leave at around 9.20am, and get to Izmir at 10.30am, which would mean arriving at Ephesus at midday at the latest. We would recommend staying in Selcuk to get some lunch before visiting Ephesus since you’ll want to avoid the midday heat. Return flights operate as late as 10.30pm from Izmir Airport with SunExpress so there is plenty of time to enjoy the sites. If you don’t want to arrange it all yourself, you can also book a tour from Antalya to Ephesus.

2. Lycia Rock Tombs

For a perfect day trip adventure, head around two and a half hours south of Antalya to Dalyan, navigating your way along the beach road and following the beach and turquoise Mediterranean waters.

Soon you will have officially entered the land of the Lycians, the name of the people that lived in this area since the records of Ancient Egypt. The Lycians (pronounced Lik-ee-ans) believed that once you died, your spirit was carried to the afterlife by magical winged creatures.

antalya turkey day trips

To greater the chances of reaching said afterlife, the Lycians built intricately detailed tombs carved high up into the mountainside, they were mostly reserved for the Kings and Queens of the era.

Built almost 2500 years ago in 500BC, remarkably, these tomb sites are still in excellent condition today and can be seen in small numbers across the region.

  • Distance from Antalya: 139 km (86 miles)
  • Travel time: 2 hours 20 minutes by car, 3 hours by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: The best way to get there is by hiring a car or taking the bus. Since it takes a couple hours, we recommend starting as early as possible. Alternatively, you can book onto a private tour which includes a hotel pick up and drop off.

3. Cappadocia

Best-Time-To-Visit-Cappadocia-Featured

Contrary to popular belief, Cappadocia isn’t just a city, it’s actually the name for the entire central region of Turkey.

Famous for its breathtakingly beautiful landscape and fairytale-like hot air balloon rides that fill the morning sky, Cappadocia has so much to offer the weary traveler wishing to spend a few days in the area. It’s an excellent place for hikes too, with many trails dotted around the towns leading you to historical chimneys, castles, and sunset views to die for.

For something a little out of the ordinary, you should consider a guided tour of Derinkuyu Underground City , a vast, deep, underground city that was effectively a defensive haven during the brutal invasions of the Middle Ages, large enough to shelter up to 20,000 Cappadocia locals.

The distance from Antalya to Cappadocia is quite far, so you’re going to need to fly if you want to see it in a day, however it’s possible to do it.

You can also book yourself onto one of the red tours or green tours , which are day tours of the region. The tours can pick you up and drop you off at the airport, so you can catch a late evening flight back to Antalya.

It will be a bit of a rush, but if you’re short on time in Turkey and are not afraid of long days, then it’s certainly a journey worth taking.

  • Distance from Antalya: 575 km (357 miles)
  • Travel time: 7.5 hours by car, 10 hours by overnight bus, 1 hour 15 minute flight from Antalya to Kayseri Erkilet Airport.
  • Best way to get there: Since it’s a long drive, the best way to get there is to fly. You can find flights leaving as early as 3AM with Turkish Airlines, transfer in Istanbul, and arrive in Nevsehir at 8AM. You will find return flights with Turkish Airlines at 8.50 PM and gets into Antalya at midnight, so you have a whole day of exploring. Since you only have a day, we recommend opting for either the green tour or red tour . You’ll be tired after, but it will be so worth it. If you have more time on your side, consider taking a 2-day tour of Cappadocia from Antalya with an overnight stay in a cave hotel.

4. Koprulu Canyon

antalya turkey day trips

One of the more popular day tours from Antalya and the local region is Koprulu Canyon. A favorite of the locals and tourists alike, it’s a strikingly picturesque national park for swimming, relaxation, and for those brave enough to attempt, even some white water rafting.

Perfect for escaping the heat of the beach, which trust us, if you’re visiting in the summer you’re going to need to find places to cool down in!

With a monumental stone bridge across the Canyon itself the star of the show, there are also smaller bridges more than worthy of checking out too, allowing you to capture the perfect Instagram shot.

With activities like horse riding and quad safaris on offer as well, there’s so much to do here that you might even decide to make use of the camping facilities at the canyon.

  • Distance from Antalya: 91 km (56 miles)
  • Travel time: 1 hour 40 minutes by car, 45 minutes by bus to Serik and 50 minutes taxi, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: Since you would need to take a bus and a taxi (and a 50 minute taxi journey would be expensive) the best and most economical way to get to Koprulu Canyon is to hire a car and drive. If you don’t drive, you can find private tours from local travel agencies to take you to Koprulu Canyon from Antalya, which will pick you up from your hotel and drop you back at your hotel after a full day of exploring.

5. The Taurus Mountains

antalya turkey day trips

Running almost parallel with the gorgeous Mediterranean sea lies the snow-capped peaks of the Taurus Mountain range (well, snow-capped in the winter). Throughout Turkey’s rich and diverse history, the Taurus Mountains have remained an iconic symbol of its mythological past.

Boasting rugged limestone terrain and towering peaks and cascading waterfalls, the mountain range is home to small, traditional villages where you can stop for a local lunch and get to know those that live in this remote region of Turkey.

Interestingly, the range gets its name from the historic culture of the surrounding land with the bull (Taurus) and being only a few hour’s drive away, it makes for an excellent day trip from Antalya.

  • Distance from Antalya: 250 km (155 miles)
  • Travel time: 3 hours by car, not available by bus or train
  • Best way to visit: Since there are no trains or buses, the best way to visit is to hire a car and drive. Alternatively, you can find excursions from Antalya that will pick you up from any hotel and drop you home after. If you don’t drive, a day tour is your only option.

6. Fethiye and Oludeniz

Blue-Lagoon-oludeniz-Turkey

Fethiye is an immensely popular tourist resort city nestled along the golden sands of the Turquoise Coast. Arguably one of its main drawing points is Oludeniz, a small town just 15-minutes drive away, which is home to the iconic Blue Lagoon .

It’s got everything a coastal city needs – from huge, stunning Fethiye beaches and promenade, exquisite Turkish restaurants and cafes specializing in the most delicious, fresh seafood, to huge forested mountains like that of Mount Babadag, Fethiye is one excersion you simply have to make.

Not only is the water of the lagoon warm and crystal clear, but its sand is also sumptuously soft making it an ideal place to catch some rays.

If you’d like a more active day trip from Antalya to Fethiye, then worry not. Fethiye is the paragliding capital of Turkey and is one of the highest paragliding jump sites in the world. It’s also a great place to partake in water sports such as stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and peddle boating.

After a day at the beach, head down to the promenade in Oludeniz to enjoy one of the bars along the seafront, or head over to the ancient abandoned village of Kayakoy for a more cultural experience.

  • Distance from Antalya: 194.8 km (121 miles)
  • Travel time: 3 hours by car, 5.5 hours by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: Since it’s a long drive, you’re only option would be to hire a car and set off very early.

antalya turkey day trips

Konya is a major city in south-central Turkey and is steeped in history after having been inhabited since the third millennium (3000) BC.

Within Turkey itself, it’s widely regarded as the country’s ‘spiritual’ capital and as a result, has been almost forgotten about by tourists from all over.

One of the main attractions in Konya is the fascinating tomb of the Persian Sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, or better known as Rumi. He’s often regarded as one of history’s best, and most influential poets. Rather confusingly for the tourist, Rumi’s tomb name is the Mevlana Museum .

Even if you aren’t familiar with Rumi or his work, the Tomb is simply a must-see when in the area. The interior is sure to take your breath away. Best of all – it’s free!

Konya is a small city and can be seen in a full day, however if you don’t want to get up early to drive to Konya we recommend staying one night and driving back the next day, and seeing Konya over two half days.

  • Distance from Antalya: 300 km (186 miles)
  • Travel time: 4 hours by car, 6 hours by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: it’s going to be a long trek, but you’ve got little choice but to hire a car and drive. You’d need to get up early, but it’s doable.

8. Pamukkale & Hierapolis

Pamukkale Travertine Terraces

Where to start with Pamukkale . Just like Cappadocia, Pamukkale is a mesmerizing UNESCO World Heritage Site and is probably one of the most photogenic places on the planet. This is exactly why you would be a fool not to visit whilst you’re in the country.

Pamukkale literally translates to ‘Cotton Castle’ in Turkish, and is a completely natural site known for the carbonate mineral which has been left by the flowing waters of the Cal Mountain. It’s also famous for its hot water thermal springs which you can actually swim in.

Once you’re done exploring the scenery of Pamukkale, you can head to the ancient Greek city of Hierapolis which is located at the top of the mineral deposits.

hierapolis

The ancient city of Hieropolis dates back to the early 2nd century BC and was built in its location to make use of the hot thermal springs from nearby Pamukkale.

Because of this, it was known as a ‘spa town’ and thousands flocked to Hieropolis to experience the natural wonders on its doorstep.

Unfortunately, like many ancient Greek cities in the area, it was destroyed by an earthquake that didn’t leave much standing. However, you can still see the well-preserved theater and its necropolis with tombs to give you an idea of the layout of this magnificent place. The North Gate is also largely preserved.

History buffs and travelers will also revel in the fact you can also see the tomb of Philip the Apostle too.

For a day trip from Antalya to remember, this is the one – if only you remember it for the long car ride! Don’t worry though, you can find a bunch of tour operators that will run this day trip and include hotel pick up and drop off.

  • Distance from Antalya: 240 km (149 miles)
  • Travel time: 3 hours by car, 3 hours 15 minutes by bus, N/A minutes by train
  • Best way to get there: The best way to get there is by hiring a car or taking a bus, since the bus is only 15 minutes longer. If you don’t want to look up bus times and plan your day, you can also take a guided tour to Pamukkale, which also stops by Hierapolis.

9. The Ancient City of Perge

antalya turkey day trips

Wonderfully easy to get to from Antalya city center is the stunning ancient city of Perge . Known for its magnificent amphitheater that housed a capacity of 15,000 people, the old Roman ruins date back well over 3000 years.

The Perge site is vast of ancient ruins, and with buildings like the city’s temple, crumbling school buildings, and its traditional Roman baths to marvel at, you’ll get an idea of what life was really like at Perge all those years ago.

Perhaps most interestingly, Alexander the Great was noted to have ridden horseback through Perge’s gates. Only a short 20-minute drive outside of Antalya, and accessible via the city’s tram network followed by an easy 30 minute walk, Perge is one place you cannot afford to miss.

In fact, it was probably our favorite place we visited on our trip to Antalya. Allow yourself a good 3 hours to explore it all, it’s surprisingly big.

We also recommend visiting late afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day. It can get quite hot at Perge because it lies within a valley.

  • Distance from Antalya: 16 km (10 miles)
  • Travel time: 20 minutes by car, 1 hour 10 minutes by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: Perge is a really easy day trip to get to by hiring a car or taking a public bus. Buses go direct from Mevlana Cd-1 Antalya and depart every 20 minutes. It takes just over an hour, so it’s completely doable to do this by yourself. If you want a no fuss way to travel, you can find tours that take you to Perge, as well as to other sites nearby like Aspendos and the waterfalls. If you’re not hiring a car, this might be a good option since it’s not easy to get around these other places by public transport.

10. The Sunken City of Kekova

Sunken City of Kekova

If you’d like to get off the beaten track and see something that most have not, then simply take a boat trip from Antalya to the small Turkish island of Kekova from the coastal town of Demre.

Its waters and coast line are beautiful, however, what really steals the show is the partly sunken ruins of the ancient town of Kekova that once stood on the island.

Destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century, Kekova was rebuilt and remained a working dockyard until it was abandoned due to Arabic invasions.

The Turkish government have banned swimming around the ruins due to looting, however it still makes for excellent viewing with plenty of opportunities to get great pictures. You can take boat tours and kayak tours.

  • Distance from Antalya: 140 km (87 miles)
  • Best way to get there: The best way to get there is by hiring a car and driving, or you can take the bus since it goes direct from Kızılırmak Cd-5 to Demre. From Demre, the only way to see Kekova is by boat tour, which you can purchase on arrival in Demre. If you don’t want all the fuss, it’s also possible to book a tour from Antalya which picks you up and drops you off at your hotel.

Alanya castle

Alanya is another coastal city not to be missed, especially if you enjoy lazing on the beach and discovering ancient cities.

The biggest draw to Alanya is Kleopatra Beach, a 1km beach that’s named after the Queen of Egypt, who was said to have enjoyed swimming there.

The beach has soft sand and gentle waves, which make for the perfect place to relax and enjoy a day by the coast.

Another top site to check out in Alanya is Alanya Castle, which is perched on a hilltop overlooking Kleopatra Beach on one side, and the marina on the other. You can reach the castle by a short 5-minute cable car ride or you can hike or take a bus.

The castle is surrounded by a citadel filled with ancient sites and ruins, and flanked by an ancient city wall. It’s free to walk around the citadel but you have to pay to enter the castle area (which we personally don’t think is worth it – see why here ).

Alanya is a buzzing city but it feels quite relaxed compared to Antalya. Although possible to see on a day trip, you may decide you want to stay a few days!

  • Distance from Antalya: 133 km (149 miles)
  • Travel time: 2 hours by car, 3 hours by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: Since the bus takes a long time and the bus station is a distance from the center of Antalya, it’s easier to hire a car and drive.

12. Tahtali Mountain

Mount Tahtali Turkey Natural Landmark

The Tahtali Mountain, also known as Tahtali Dagi or Lycian Olympus, is one of the largest peaks in Southern Turkey. Standing mightily tall at a whopping 7,762 ft, back in Ancient Greece the mountain was called Mount Olympus.

If you’re unfamiliar with Ancient Greece and its mythology, Olympus actually means ‘home of the gods’. As we’ve pointed out, there are many ancient cities lying in ruin across this area of the country and that’s no different with Tahtali. The 2700-year-old town of Phaselis lies in ruin at the base of the mountain which you can visit for yourself.

If climbing a mountain isn’t particularly your thing whilst on holiday, luckily, there is a funicular which takes you to the summit of the peak, giving you easy access to the sublime views of the region.

  • Distance from Antalya: 72 km (44 miles)
  • Travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes by car, 1 hour 20 minutes by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: Unless you’re thinking of hiring a car to visit other day trips from Antalya, it’s probably easier to get a bus. If you don’t like figuring out bus routes, then you can always opt for a tour from Antalya. Though this does include the funicular to the peak. If you want to hike, you would find it easier to hire a car as you can park at the trailhead.

13. Kuzdere Passage Hike

antalya turkey day trips

The Kuzdere Passage is a gorgeous hiking trail that is part of the much larger group of trails called the Lycian Way. If you’re into hiking and love to get your blood pumping, then this should be at the top of your to-do list if you’re in the area.

Under 1 hour from Antalya, it leads you through jaw-dropping valleys, past a fast river, lush green woodland, and incredible views, there really isn’t any excuse not to head out and explore on foot.

Oh – and did we mention, natural springs are conveniently located along the way for you to take a break and cool off from the scorching Turkish sun. Bliss!

  • Distance from Antalya: 46 km (28 miles)
  • Travel time: 45 minutes by car, 1 hour 10 minutes by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: Since it’s not too far out of Antalya, you can get a public bus to Kemer from Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi-2 and then take a taxi to the trailhead.

14. Aspendos & Side Old Town

Ancient City of Aspendos

If you enjoyed the historical site of Perge, then you’ll enjoy visiting Aspendos and the nearby town of Side, which are two other ancient historical landmarks from the Greco-Roman period.

Aspendos is an ancient city, though little remains of it besides a very well-preserved amphitheatre. In fact, the theatre is still used for operas and performances today.

Nearby is the town of Side, which as well as its stunning beaches and picturesque landscapes, also has quaint cobbled streets and and ruins scattered around its old town.

Some notable landmarks are the Apollon Temple, Side Amphitheatre, and the remains of the Agora. The town is also lined with shops, bars, and restaurants built into the ruins, creating a unique ambiance.

  • Distance from Antalya: 48.2 km (121 miles) to Aspendos, 73.5 km to Side
  • Travel time: 45 minutes by car to Aspendos, 1 hour to Side
  • Best way to get there: Aspendos is not easy to visit using public transport since the buses run infrequently and there’s still a 50 minute walk from where the bus drops you off to the site. You should hire a car and drive yourself or book a day tour. We made the mistake of visiting Aspendos ourselves without taking a day trip from Antalya, and what a mistake that was! We took a bus from Side and then discovered there was no bus back and had to hitchhike in the dark. Don’t make the same mistake we did and book yourself a tour or get a hire car.

15. Adrasan-Suluada Island

antalya turkey day trips

If boat trips and a golden beach in Antalya are what get you up in the morning, then you should be all over this day trip to the Adrasan-Suluada Island. Just a short 40-minute sailing away, you’ll be given access to a small but wonderful island.

Often compared to the Maldives, Suluada’s calm turquoise waters are home to a natural reef and as a result, you can have the pleasure of getting up close to a vast array of marine wildlife.

With no electricity or running water on the tiny island, it’s really only for day trips, however, if you’d like to spend multiple days there, you can stay in the nearby town of Adrasan or Olympos.

  • Distance from Antalya: 90 km (55 miles)
  • Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes by car to Adrasan, or 1 hour 50 minutes by bus, and then 45 minutes by boat
  • Best way to get there: Since its an island, the only way to get there is by boat. You will need to get to Adrasan first, where the boats depart from. You can either drive or take the bus from Antalya bus station. Buses depart every 3 hours so make sure to check the times before you go. If you’re worried about time, you can also book a tour in advance. These boat tours pick you up from your hotel and drive to Adrasan where a boat is waiting for you.

16. Goynuk Canyon

Goynuk Canyon

If you’re looking for an active day trip nearby Antalya, then Goynuk Canyon is one of the places you simply HAVE to visit. Famous across the region for its astounding beauty, a variety of activities can be done at the park utilizing the rugged terrain it sits upon.

At the heart of the canyon is a fast-flowing wild river that’s used for white-water rafting, and a little further in you can find a gorgeous waterfall and the opportunity to go on a safari tour that makes the most of the nature and beauty of the park.

You’ll need to carry some change as there is a small entrance fee to gain access to the Canyon.

  • Distance from Antalya: 36 km (22 miles)
  • Travel time: 45 minutes by car, 50 minutes by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: It’s very easy to get to by public bus. Buses leave from Kızılırmak Cd-5 every 8 minutes and take you directly to the canyon.

Antalya day trip

Kemer is an idyllic town on the coast of the Turkish Riviera that’s free and easily accessible from Antalya. Widely known for its huge stretch of pebble beach together with its large marina, Kemer is a beautiful spot if you’d like to get off the beaten track and do some sightseeing.

Behind the town, nearby, is the sumptuously green pine forests of the Beydaglari National Park, where you can go for hikes and explore the hills of southern Turkey. This is also the location of the beginning of the cable car to the summit of Tahtali Mountain (Olympos) which we touched on earlier.

Kemer’s market is also a fantastic place to source local produce, running every day from early morning to early evening.

  • Distance from Antalya: 44 km (27 miles)
  • Travel time: 45 minutes by car, 45 minutes by bus, not available by train
  • Best way to get there: There is a public bus that leaves from İl Sağlık Müdürlüğü and takes you directly to Kemer. It runs every 20 minutes and takes 45 minutes. Of course, if you’re interested in learning about the history and culture of Kemer, you can book Antalya day tours to Kemer too.

4 thoughts on “17 Exciting Day Trips From Antalya, Turkey!”

What the hell you cannot do Ephesus or Cappadocia or anything else involving flights on a day trip.. stupid suggestions.

Hey Karmen,

Thank you for your input. These places are quite far from Antalya, so you would have to get an early flight (the earliest one is usually around 7 to 9 AM) and then take the latest flight back. It is possible, but it might not be worth it since you won’t be able to spend a very long time in these places, especially in Cappadocia where you need several days.

Hi, I appreciate your effort to provide the valuable and very useful information, but many of these are not day trips.

Might I suggest, anything over 2hrs each way (at most) is an overnighter, and even that’s a stretch for most people spending 4 hours in transport.

Hi Sam, thank you for your comment. Yes, some of these are quite a long day trip from Antalya, however they are all doable in a day. It’s quite common to see day tours to Pamukkale, Ephesus and Cappadocia from Antalya for example. While there is a lot of travel involved, it’s great for people who are short on time and don’t have a long time to spend in Turkey. You are right that anywhere over 2 hours drive is best seen as an overnight stay and that’s how we would prefer to see some of these places, but if you are short on time, it’s totally possible to visit these destinations as a day trip.

After you see the sights of Antalya, I suggest you get a tour guide and go on a sightseeing tour to one of my suggestions below. You can skip ahead to book one here if you already know what you want to see.

1. Antalya To Kekova Island Excersion

Best Islands In Turkey - Kekova Island and Kalekoy from Simena Castle, Kas Antalya Turkey

When staying in Antalya , make sure you find the time to head to Kekova Island, one of the best Turkish islands near Kalekoy village. Here, you’ll find underwater ruins that date back to Lycian times, and you can visit them directly by boat tour or kayak. The ruins were thrown into the sea by a massive earthquake believed to have occurred during the 2nd century. The ruins are now known as the “Sunken City.”

It’s impressive to see first-hand, but the whole island is nothing short of beautiful in its own right. This part of Turkey is packed with ancient ruins, and even a quick visit to Kalekoy will allow you to see the ancient ruins of Simena and a massive fortress on the hilltop.

You can find day trips that tour to Kekova easily from most beach resorts in the Antalya region, with Kas being the closest.

2. Excursion From Antalya To Düden Waterfalls

What To See In Antalya - Waterfall Duden at Antalya, Turkey

Every year, millions of visitors head to the Antalya region , but few know about the beauty of the waterfalls that are just a stone’s throw from Antalya International Airport! These coastal waterfalls are arguably among the most beautiful places in Turkey to visit.

The waterfalls are formed from the cascades of water spilling down Mount Taurus before heading to the sea. As the light fades and the sun sets, the water begins to glisten and forms beautiful waterfalls that you must catch on film.

A rainbow is shining over Duden waterfalls, Antalya

Duden Waterfalls are situated in a protected park, so there’s plenty of greenery to chill out in, and it’s never too crowded, apart from during important national days in Türkiye when locals head out with their family members to spend some time together in the sun.

You can reach the waterfalls on your own steam by hiring a car ; they’re only around 15 minutes from the airport, or you can book a tour, which is probably the easiest way. Tours take you to the foot of the waterfalls, or you can go on a full-day boat trip and see them cascading into the sea for yourself.

3. Day Trip From Antalya To The Land Of Legends Theme Park

Best Day Trips From Antalya - land of legends theme park

Enjoy a day of family-friendly fun by exploring the excitement of the Land of Aqua and Waterfront Kingdom, two distinct zones. This is our recommendation for the kids, but adults can enjoy it, too. No judgment.

You can have all-day access to high-speed rides, four roller coasters, water slides, animal shows, and a 5-dimension cinema. Try the Hyper Coaster, which takes you from 200 feet (61 meters) to a 142 feet (43,5 meters) diameter loop at speeds of 72 miles per hour (115 kilometers per hour), or the Deep Dive slide, which sends you almost vertically down. Later, unwind by gliding down the Lazy Floats River’s gentle currents or having a blast with the family at the Secret Lagoon’s Spray Action multi-level playground.

Find local tour options here.

Located on the gorgeous Turquoise Coast, Marmaris is lapped by the beautiful blue waters of the Aegean . Marmaris and Icmeler run into one another and are less than 10 minutes apart. For that reason, Icmeler is often called Marmaris because it’s much smaller. However, it’s worth pointing out that they are two different resorts if we are being technical! During your stay, zig-zag between the two because Icmeler is so beautiful and worth more than one visit .

Marmaris is home to myriads of picturesque beaches , crystal-clear waters, and spectacular sunsets. The long stretch of sandy beach runs along the town’s promenade and is perfect for sunbathing and swimming.

12 Fascinating Day Trips From Antalya City (With My Travel Tips)

Looking for the best day trips from Antalya, Turkey ? Don’t pass by, check my guide as I feature the most popular organized Antalya day tours and not so popular but incredibly interesting independent Antalya day trips. From ancient cities and azure beaches to hiking, canyoning, and exploring wild islands, it’s all here below!

Surprisingly, Antalya became one of my favorite provinces for beach vacations and nature . It comes second after Bodrum in terms of a number of activities and variety of things to do. During our few months stay, we explored a ton of places there and have many more left on our list to discover on our future visits. So I want to share my favorite Antalya excursions that you can go on your own or with a guide.

When I was thinking about what to put on my list, I decided to choose only those day trips that do not take more than 3 hours of travel one way. Anything longer than that is not a day trip, it should be already a staycation and a separate visit. Especially in a country like Turkey where every kilometer of land has something interesting to a traveler.

In fact, getting to all the places in the Antalya region that I mention below takes between 30 minutes and one and a half hours of travel. Going on these trips will show a very good picture of Antalya and the Turquoise Coast. Enjoy!

How to Go For Day Trips From Antalya

best day trips from Antalya

There are different ways how to go on day trips from Antalya. You can join an organized day tour, use public transport, private transfer, or hire a car. We personally like to rent a car as often as possible and go places and on occasion join tours as they may offer the best presentation of the site or destination.

Using public transport is also a good option since it’s also cheaper. Although you need to remember that using public buses (no trains in the Antalya region) is going to take much more time. So often you’ll be able to spend a day only on one trip when going by car or on a tour, there is a chance to see nearby places and combine 2 or even 3 day trips in one.

Private or small group tours are an affordable and efficient way to travel around the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Having a local guide will enrich your experience, especially if your day trip is focused on culture or history.

In Antalya (as pretty much anywhere in Turkey) we personally use GetYourGuide to find and book day tours. It is a reliable platform and all tours in Antalya you find through them are absolutely legit. Viator is also popular in Turkey, and in Antalya by the way, they offer a broader range of itineraries .

But still, our favorite way to go on day trips in Turkey is by car. I recommend this option to everyone who holds a driver’s license and has driving experience. Roads in Antalya are great and driving is enjoyable.

If you decide you want to hire a car in Antalya, I recommend the Local Rent website to find an affordable rental from a local company. Many come with insurance included and don’t require any deposit. For more details, read up my tips for renting a car and driving in Antalya .

Popular Short Day Trips From Antalya (Under 1 Hour Travel)

Antalya day trip to goynuk canyon – adventure escape.

antalya turkey day trips

Goynuk Canyon is one of the most popular day trips from Antalya. It is also one of the most beautiful natural wonders to visit with clean refreshing water and plenty of oxygen. On a hot summer day, it is a must-see destination for all nature and outdoor enthusiasts, regardless of fitness level.

The canyon on its own is a narrow gorge no more than 6 meters wide and up to 350 meters high. It has a length of 14 kilometers, ending in the spurs of Bedaglar. At the bottom of the canyon flows the river of the same name which is slow and safe. In summer it becomes shallow and turns into a large stream and a chain of small lakes that get separated by rapids up to 3 m high, made of boulders and large stones.

In most places, the creek is knee-deep or waist-deep, but there are a few sections that you have to traverse up to your neck in water or swim in a boat. For these reasons, you can’t do it without a wetsuit and inflatable vest. At the park, the staff member will provide guidance on how to start this canyoning body rafting and give mandatory equipment for that.

Besides this activity you can also go ziplining , trekking in the canyon on a Lycian trail, and joining a quad safari .

On the way to the canyon, there are a few lovely cafes with Turkish food and chai.

When traveling on your own, you can purchase tickets at the park. But be ready to wait to get in if visiting in the high summer season. There is an option, by the way, to purchase tickets only to enter the park without any rafting to walk around, pop into a cafe, or join other paid activities.

If you prefer to go on a tour, there is an option to choose a combo canyoning and ziplining tour or solely body rafting tour .

  • Distance from Antalya: 35 km (22 miles)
  • Travel time: 35-45 minutes one-way
  • How to get there: by car or private transfer
  • Best time to visit:  late May through early September
  • How much time to spend: the whole day if you want! The canyoning is not limited in time but you won’t be able to stay in the water for too long because it’s too cold.

Day Trip to Kemer – Hiking, Sea & Turkish Food

Kemer Central Beach

While Kemer is considered a resort town perfect for tourists who stay in one of its all-inclusive hotels, there are still a few lovely things to do there for those who don’t stay in Kemer but come to visit on a day trip from Antalya.

I personally love this little town with coniferous trees, clean air, and pebbly beaches. It provides a perfect opportunity to combine in one day time by the beach, hiking through coniferous forest, and then sitting by the river and old aqueduct while eating freshly caught fish.

So I recommend you do the same to see what a multifaceted town Kemer is!

Depending on the time of the day when you arrive, I suggest you go to Central Beach which is more like a landscaped area with numerous amenities for tourists (umbrellas, sun loungers, cafes with terraces, and bathrooms). But keep in mind that the line is divided into zones that are the property of Kemeri hotels. Everyone who is not staying in a hotel here has to pay for sunbeds and umbrellas.

Central beach has large pebbles that make the water crystal clear. If you’d prefer to swim on a sandy beach (with as beautiful water!), then better head to Qualista Beach where there is also a cool beach club.

If visiting Kemer in late spring or early fall (even in summer but in the evening), go on a hike through the forest inside the town to see Kemer from a bird’s eye view . There are a few trails that bring you to the top of the mountain . Check maps.me to understand which one will work best for you.

day trip from Antalya to Kemer

And at the end of the day, if you come by car, follow a twisty road towards Ovacik and make a stop at this restaurant above the canyon . It is my secret place where Mark and I loved going to unwind and have delish fried fish or gozleme. Here it is:

  • Distance from Antalya: 44 km (27 miles)
  • Travel time: 40-50 minutes one-way
  • How to get there: by car or public bus
  • Best times to visit: April, May, June, September and October
  • How much time to spend:  from a few hours to a few days

Antalya to Phaselis – Roman Era Ancient Site & Beach

On a very beautiful small peninsula south of Kemer, there is the ancient city of Phaselis covered with cedars and pines. It is another interesting spot for a day trip from Antalya which you can visit on your own or as part of a group tour combined with a full-day boat trip with lunch.

Phaselis is a unique settlement where the sea and history coexist with its ruins, historical antique theater, aqueduct, agora, and baths.

The port city of ancient times, Phaselis, was founded in 690 BC due to its unique location and proximity to rich forest areas, with three different bays suitable for creating a port. It is located among pine and cedar forests in the Olympos-Beydaglari National Park.

best day trip from Antalya

Before entering the ancient city, you’ll need to walk or drive along an asphalt road for about 2 km and reach the place where the sea and the ancient ruins meet. The northern harbor, which you will see after the remains of the Temple and the Necropolis (cemetery) is between the Necropolis and the road to the Ancient Aqueduct.

The best part about this place for many people is a beautiful sandy 100 meter beach among the trees. It can be accessed by paying a small entrance fee. Phaselis beach is a favorite place for families with children because of the calm sea and warm sea water. It is also one of the bays from where boats depart to Kaleici Marina (Old part of Antalya) and yachts to Kemer, Tekirova, and Camyuva.

  • Distance from Antalya: 56 km (35 miles)
  • Travel time: 50-60 minutes one-way
  • How to get there: by car, private transfer, or by bus and then walk to the entrance
  • Best time to visit:  from late May to October
  • How much time to spend:  from a few hours to a full day

Day Trip From Antalya to Perge & Kursunlu Waterfall – History & Nature

Antalya day trip to Perge

Only in Antalya there is a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with the ancient history of Turkey without giving up entertainment and beach holidays. After all, the entire Antalya province is full of various sites with the ruins of many ancient cities.

One of these cities is ancient Perge which attracts more and more tourists every year. It is one of the most interesting attractions for lovers of picturesque ruins and history. Excursions that include a visit to Perge are available from the center of Antalya, from Kemer, Belek, Alanya and Side. But it’s also very easy to visit on an individual trip when renting a car or using public transportation.

Perge is located 18 km from Antalya, not far from the modern town of Aksu. It starts with the city gates – the inner gate from the Hellenistic period and the outer gate from the Roman period. The most photographed element is the Hellenistic Gate, which was erected in the 3rd century BC. Through it, you can go to the colonnaded street with the baths and ruins of the Agora (market square).

Kursunlu waterfall

If you haven’t seen any ancient cities in Turkey yet, visiting Perge will be a great introduction as it was one of the richest and most beautiful cities of the old world during the Hellenistic period. It was famous for its architecture and sculpture. And in 2009 the city was included in the UNESCO World Temporary Heritage List.

After the visit to Perge, if you are not tired, make a trip to the nearby ancient city of Aspendos . It has the best preserved ancient theater and is almost nearby – only 35 km away.

Another place to visit in the area is Antalya Archaeological Museum which is the largest on the entire Turkish coast. All the statues, relics, and sarcophagi found in Perge are now in the Antalya Museum.

And one more place to add to this day trip is the picturesque Kursunlu waterfall . Hiding behind lush greenery, it provides a wonderful opportunity to cool off and take fantastic photos. This waterfall is located in the middle of a pine forest, where you can enjoy camel riding or a family picnic.

  • Travel time: 20-30 minutes one-way
  • How to get there: by car or city bus, or join this organized tour that covers it all
  • Best time to visit:  March to May, September to November
  • How much time to spend: expect to devote at least 3 hours to Perge

From Antalya to Tahtali Mountains – Scenic Views & Traditional Turkish Villages

Driving through Tahtali mountains in Antalya

This would be not really a day trip but more of a road trip from Antalya through Tahtali mountains. And I think it’s a great trip for those travelers who have more time in Antalya or who have a desire to see Turkish village life in the mountains rather than by the sea.

Tahtali Mountains are mainly famous for the ski resort Saklikent. It is particularly popular in Antalya during the winter season in Turkey . However, it is no less beautiful in the summer too. And there is much more hidden behind the mountains than just the area for skiing.

Saklikent on its own stands out with peace and quiet. Tourists have a great opportunity to be alone with untouched nature, enjoy panoramic views, go hiking, and listen to the sound of majestic mountains.

If you are visiting during the snow season which lasts from January until the end of April, expect to find all the needed infrastructure and lots of snow activities. On the top, there is a panoramic cafe serving snacks and hot drinks.

In summer, Saklikent is much quieter and offers hiking in the mountains, BBQing, and participation in the famous Shenlik festival. In July and August when Antalya gets very hot, locals escape the heat and run to Saklikent because the temperature there is up to 15 degrees lower.

Saklikent

We love going to Saklikent just to unwind, drive on the scenic mountain road to enjoy the views, and go on short hikes. But before we get there, we also love stopping in a bunch of other places to eat traditional (for this region) food, spend time in villages, and walk in nature.

Among my favorite places on the way to Saklikent are Doyran Nature Preserve , Cakirlar village , and Geyikbayiri . The last one is a village with a green area around it excellent for camping, rock climbing, and mountaineering. It has lots of walking paths and recreation areas running through cedar and red pine forests.

Doyran Nature Reserve near Antalya

Only in Geyikbayiri alone it is possible to spend the entire day walking around, taking wonderful photos of wooden plateau houses, and tasting delicious nomadic dishes in one of their many restaurants. Our top restaurant is Yayla Gozleme , they have wonderful food and views, views, views! On a bright sunny day, from their terrace you can see all of Antalya in the distance and the sea.

  • Distance from Antalya: 25-50 km (15-31 miles) depending on where in Tahtali you decide to go
  • Travel time: 1-1.5 hours one-way
  • How to get there: by car
  • Best time to visit:  any time during the year is amazing, but expect to have different activities
  • How much time to spend: from a few hours to the entire day

More One Day Tours From Antalya

Longer Day Trips From Antalya (1-3 Hours of Travel)

To side – ancient city by the sea.

Side, just like Kemer, is a seaside town great for beach vacations. But it is also a great pick for a day trip or on the way from Antalya to Alanya or Cappadocia region . The main reasons to visit are the ancient city, which is now popular with tourists, cute numerous souvenir shops and cafes, and its beach.

Side is small and feels like time there has stopped. If you walk along the ancient streets, you will see a magnificent view of the majestic columns of the ancient temple of Apollo and smooth blue expanse of sea waves. Further, the path lies along a busy embankment, snow-white yachts that stand in the harbor and seem to invite you for a walk with a light breeze.

Side day trip

Among all the ancient sites, it is also worth noting Side Museum, dedicated to the civilizations that once flourished on the territory of the city. Its exhibits are fragments of statues, sarcophagi, ancient coins, and amphoras. The oldest item dates back to the 8th century BC. For the most part, all exhibits tell about the Greco-Roman period, but you can also find artifacts related to the Byzantine and Ottoman eras.

Holidays in Side have become popular not only because of the unique sights but also because of the numerous beaches. The coast is divided into western and eastern. Distinctive features of local beaches are sandy coverage and shallow water which allows families with children to relax comfortably. The water in the sea warms up by mid-May and its temperature remains at high levels until the end of October.

In July and August Side is hot, so it will be difficult to join excursions or do a self-guided tour.

If you have a car, combine a day trip to Side with a quick visit to nearby Manavgat Waterfalls and Oymapinar Reservoir . Another option is to join an organized tour and go to a traditional village Ormana and the nearby Altinbesik underground cave. You can also visit Ormana and Altinbesik cave on your own, but for the village, it’d be more interesting to be on a tour to hear stories about it.

  • Distance from Antalya: 75 km (46 miles)
  • Travel time: 70-80 minutes one-way to Side
  • How to get there: by car, private transfer, by bus, or on a tour
  • Best time to visit:  from April-June, September-November
  • How much time to spend:  half a day or a full day if staying at the beach/hotel

Trip From Antalya to Adrasan – Eco Village & Red Sand Beach

day tour to Adrasan

Adrasan village is a hidden paradise on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey that should be on your travel bucket list if you like visiting traditional villages and appreciate tranquility. It is the right choice for all holidaymakers who desire to spend a holiday in a natural environment and see a different side of Antalya.

I’ve been to this village a couple of times and couldn’t get enough. I visited it on a day tour and stopped here on a road trip between Antalya and Fethiye . And all my visits were always incredible due to Adrasan’s natural beauty and deep blue sea, due to its people who make you feel at home right away, and due to the number of activities.

You see, Adrasan is located near the world-famous Lycian path and has a 2 km long beach surrounded by groves with pine trees.

So on the one hand, you can go hiking (even on short hikes) because the views that open up from hiking trails in this area are simply magnificent. On the other hand, you can come to spend all day long by the beach, surfing , kayaking , diving , trying local food in many cute cafes , and joining tours to nearby islands. Kayaks and diving equipment are available for rent on the beach.

Adrasan village Antalya

The entire area of Adrasan village is protected and its beach is among the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean region. Unlike other beach areas in Antalya and surrounding cities, Adrasan attracts with its shallower and more closed structure. Since it is situated in the bay, the sea near the shore is always very calm. There are no currents and waves, the water is transparent and clean.

So the shallow water on the beach strip will allow you to fully enjoy your holiday, even if you do not know how to swim. It also allows families with children to have a more comfortable holiday.

In addition to the beach and sea, there is also a river flowing through Adrasan with many restaurants along it. Stop by to have lunch or early dinner, feed the ducks or cats, and take dozens of insta photos.

And if you find that what the village offers is not enough, just go on a boat tour to one of the nearby coves or bays. The number one island to visit in the Adrasan Bay area is Suluada island . Being one hour away from Adrasan it is as pure and beautiful as the Maldives. Tours to this and other islands can be purchased at the beach.

Suluada island

Adrasan also has many quirky boutique hotels and guesthouses at a good price, so there is always an opportunity to turn a day trip into a long staycation. Because there is really a lot to do!

  • Distance from Antalya: 115 km (71 miles)
  • Travel time: 2.5 hours one-way
  • How to get there: by car or public buses (with a transfer)
  • Best time to visit:  May through October
  • How much time to spend:  one or a few days

Day Trip to Cirali & Olympos – Ancient Lycia, Sea Turtles, Hippie Atmosphere & Fire Mountain

Cirali and Olympos are located in the same direction as Adrasan village is but closer to Antalya. So it is very easy to combine visits to all these places in one trip (just plan it for at least 2 full days) or break it into 2 separate day trips.

If I had to describe these two cities in a few words, I’d pick ‘calmness, silence, green, and peace’. Although two of them are completely different from each other in terms of beauty and comfort.

Cirali village

Cirali is a town where you can relax in one of the magnificent boutique hotels or exquisite bungalows (even if you come for a day only), and on a clean and calm beach. All hotels here have beautiful facilities with exquisite gardens. The beach is well equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas.

Located on the border of Olympos Beydagları Coastal National Park, Cırali is perhaps one of the best examples of Turkish small towns where people live in harmony with nature. The area on both sides of Cıralı Beach is part of the national park which is a very special place with its natural and historical values because it is a breeding area for Caretta turtles.

Olympos faces the same beach as Cirali but its main settlement is a 30-minute walk away. Olympos has a very different feel and character and is mainly famous for its hippie atmosphere and Lycian ruins (you need to pay to get in). Of course, because it used to be an important city of the ancient Lycian Civilization and a very important place in maritime trade.

Both these towns have centers consisting of several streets with cafes, markets, and shops selling souvenirs and materials you need at sea. Both of them are under strict protection and offer to spend excellent time. Oh, and in the Olympos valley (which is closer to Cirali) is a Chimaera mountain site. It is famous for dozens of small flames which burn constantly from under the rocky slopes and are a must-see attraction.

  • Distance from Antalya: 125 km (77 miles)
  • How to get there: by car or public buses (with a transfer) and hitchhiking
  • How much time to spend: at least one full day

From Antalya to Demre & Ancient City Myra – For Rock Carved Thombs & Underwater City

Among all day tours from Antalya on my list, Demre is the farthest. It takes around 3 hours to reach it one way, so travel here can be exhausting to accomplish within one day. But it is well worth the time. Although in my experience, it’d be much more efficient to combine this journey with another one on the same route.

Demre is simply a fantastic place for a peaceful holiday on the Mediterranean coast away from the crowds. In addition to its crystal clear sea, stylish boutique hotels and fish restaurants, it is famous for historical artifacts dating back to the 5th century. Such as for example St. Nicholas Church (Santa Clause Church) which is the symbol of Demre and a pilgrimage site. And then the Ancient City of Myra where St. Nicholas was the bishop.

ancient city of Myra

In Demre, you can enjoy swimming and diving in the ancient ruins near the coast by Kekova Island, Ucağız village and Simena (Kaleköy). They are among the places to visit by boat trips as they are adjacent to other hidden paradises of Antalya.

Despite being a popular sightseeing area, Demre has managed to preserve its historical and natural charm. It’s always interesting to explore its area on a tour, in the end of the day go to one of the famous restaurants that serve fresh seafood between a fishing village and colorful fishing boats on the beach, and watch Demre’s famous sunset views.

  • Travel time: 2.5-3 hours one-way
  • How to get there: by car, public bus, and/or organized tour
  • Best time to visit:  April-June, September-October
  • How much time to spend: one day

From Antalya to Koprulu Cayon National Park – For Dramatic Views, Hiking & Rafting

Koprulu (or as it has to be in Turkish Köprülü) Canyon National Park is a hidden paradise located within the borders of the Antalya province. Its name is not known to the majority yet because the canyon was discovered just a few years ago.

Those who come here know it mainly for rafting. But after driving into the National park it is difficult not to notice the magnificent beauty of the canyon and get a desire to spend all day long exploring its trails. So yes, rafting is not the only reason to visit.

The picturesque nature that exists here, caves , canyons , the magic of flowing water, and history of the ancient city of Selge for hundreds of years are what captivates and can keep you busy for many days.

Koprulu canyon day trip from Antalya

Entrance to the park is free and the best way to visit is by vehicle.

If you are going to come with your own vehicle, let me mention that roads through the park are smooth. You can travel comfortably even in a small car. At least, on the road up to the famous bridge of the canyon (Oluk Köprü), it is comfortable and hassle-free. After the bridge, the road narrows.

When visiting on your own, spend some time hiking, see the historical Oluk Bridge on the river and the ancient city of Selge , contemplate the beauty of river, join jeep safari tours, cycle, go canoeing, rafting, or even swimming.

If you prefer to go on this day trip from Antalya with a tour, there are rafting and canyoning adventure tours available. Other activities mentioned above can be found on spot in the park.

  • Distance from Antalya: 90 km (56 miles)
  • Travel time: 1.5 hours one-way
  • How to get there: by car or on a tour
  • How much time to spend:  one full day and camp and stay longer

Quick Day Trip From Antalya to Alanya – City Escape

Being 2 hours drive from Antalya and having a lot to offer, Alanya is not really a destination for a day trip. I’d say it is a place to visit for at least 2 full days.

However, those who are short on time and who want to get a quick idea of another beautiful Turkish city on the Mediterranean coast will enjoy traveling here. Just make sure to leave early and have the entire day ahead of you.

day trip to Alanya

Alanya is one of the hottest resort cities in Turkey where the holiday season lasts from May to October and vacation prices are often lower than in other parts of the country. It will appeal to those who like not only beach vacation but also walking a lot and seeing beautiful sights on their own.

Alanya is similar to Antalya in some ways, yet it has its own charm and pace. There are lots of picturesque spots and beautiful nature in the city and around it.

Among must-visit places in Alanya on a day trip are Alanya Fortress , Kizikule octagonal tower that houses a museum with artifacts, Beach of Kleopatra , Kedi Evi park of cats , Alanya Marina and embankment by the water . And of course another thing to do is to join a boat tour and see the city from the water.

But my favorite sights are located not in Alanya but around it. Just some of them are Sapadere Canyon and area along the Dim Cayi river. They are famous not only for their beauty but a number of activities. If short on time, consider joining a tour which includes a city excursion, boat trip, cable car to the castle, and trip to Dim Cayi river.

If time allows, I’d highly recommend devoting more time to Alanya than one day since the city is much worth the trip!

  • Distance from Antalya: 135 km (84 miles)
  • Travel time: 2 hours one-way
  • Best time to visit:  March through June, September through December
  • How much time to spend:  one full day and more

Bonus: Is It Worth Going On a Day Trip From Antalya to Pamukkale?

Pamukkale

I know it is quite popular among travelers to go on a full-day Pamukkale tour from Antalya . But is it really worth it? The tour is really exciting and packed with activities but it won’ be for everyone. Keep in mind that:

The road takes more than 3 hours one way and for many people it may be exhausting. Some tour companies make stops on the way to Pamukkale so the journey doesn’t seem long. Thus you may want to go with them.

However, most of the time tour buses usually arrive at the same time between 11 am-12 pm which means that the landmark is usually very crowded since everyone else is offering a tour of Pamukkale at the same time.

If visiting in the hot summer season, arriving in the afternoon for many people may be also physically difficult since the heat is really unbearable. And then the tour bus leaves before sunset to return on time.

While the tour from Pamukkale to Antalya allows covering more distance in one day, you do not really experience more. Besides Pamukkale, the area is rich with other activities and unique travertines and springs . I’d also recommend you visit Kaklik cave which is a smaller version of Pamukkale underground.

For the quality trip, it’d be better to stay overnight in Pamukkale and then devote most of your next day to the site rather than to being on the bus. With the big number of travel companies in town, it is easy to find a local guide on spot.

Another good option is to plan a trip in that way when you go from Antalya to the next destination like Kusadasi, Fethiye, Marmaris or even Bodrum and see other popular Turkish cities and towns as well.

Or, as we did it, go on a road trip to Pamukkale from Antalya and see other places along the way at your own pace. In this way, you’ll be able to experience much more!

23 Fabulous Things to Do in Antalya, Turkey, Including The Best Day Trips!

23 Fabulous Things to Do in Antalya, Turkey, Including The Best Day Trips!

Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is a stunning place to travel, and if you’re lucky enough to get to plan a trip here, you can use Antalya as a great base from which to explore the region. Here are my recommendations for the best things to do in Antalya (including Antalya day trips).

Can’t read now? Pin for later!

Things to Do in Antalya, Turkey

The Best Things to Do in Antalya

I still remember the road trip to the south coast I took with my family when I was 14 years old: the hot weather, the calmness I felt when I finally got to swim after a long uninterrupted car drive that my father refused to take a break, the sandwiches we ate in the picnic areas in the forest, and the friends I made on the road who became my pen pals.

I had the chance to see almost all the south coast of Turkey back then; Antalya, Kas, Fethiye, Kalkan, Alanya… These are all beautiful places that I still remember dearly. However, there is something extra special about Antalya!

So here are my picks for the best things to do in Antalya, including some places that you can do as day trips!

Old Town (Kaleiçi)

Turkey - Antalya - Old Harbour view in Antalya City. Antalya is populer tourist destination in Turkey.

You can think of Kaleiçi like a maze, a neighborhood where you can easily get lost among restaurants, souvenir shops, boutique hotels, and art galleries.

Kale Kapisi, which is the main square, has a clock tower and a fortress gate. Tekeli Mehmet Pasa Mosque a few meters away is the 18th-century mosque with a stunning interior tile. Kesik Minare is also nearby which was once a Roman temple, then converted into a church but destroyed by fire in the 19 th century. The remaining building is now a mosque.

Stroll through Kaleiçi before it gets too hot, enjoy your tea early in the morning among the Ottoman styled mansions, and breath in the air before locals come to the square.

Turkey - Antalya- Old town (Kaleici) in Antalya, Turkey

Nowadays people come to Old Harbor to watch the sunset while drinking a glass of white wine or to come to decide which excursion boat to take that will sail to the Mediterranean. It is hard to imagine that the port was once a major economic hub bringing prosperity and trade to the city as well as to nearby cities from the 2 nd century to the 20th.

Antalya’s old harbor has cliffs looking over the Mediterranean and home to several bazaars, boutiques, and cafes. Sunset time is the best time to visit the harbor to see the spectacular sky and rest at the end of a long day while drinking your favorite drink.

Antalya Museum

Turkey - Antalya - Dancer statue from ancient Perge city at the Antalya Museum. 200 B.C.

The Antalya Museum is considered one of the most organized museums in Turkey as well as being one of the most visited. The collections are displayed very professionally, helping the visitor to understand the complexity of the region’s history.

You can see all the best finds from the Bronze Age to Byzantium’s excavation areas. There is also an ongoing excavation site inside the museum, too. Budding archeologists will find this part of the museum fascinating!

If you don’t have a lot of time, focus on the galleries displaying mosaics from Seleukeia, Perge’s statues, and silver hoard from Aspendos.

Yivli Minare

Turkey - Antalya - Minaret of Alaaddin Mosque in Antalya, Turkey

Built by the famous Seljuk Sultan Aladdin Keykubad who ruled between 1219 and 1236, Yivli Minare is a must-see, a landmark of Antalya. It is a representation of Seljuk architecture. People still pray inside the 14 th Century mosque.

Hadrian’s Gate

Turkey - Antalya - View of Hadrian's Gate in old city of Antalya Turkey

Built in honor of Emperor Hadrian, Hadrian’s Gate welcomes provides a dramatic way for visitors to enter the Kaleici. It is one of the few preserved remains of Roman and Hellenistic town halls on the eastern side of the old town. Look towards the ceiling to see the best sculptural carvings.

Turkey - Antalya - Aspendos amphitheater, Antalya Turkey

Aspendos is a world-famous archaeological site about 47 kilometers east of Antalya. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.

Locals call Aspendos by the name: “Belkis” or “Belkiz.” It is believed that Greek colonists first founded Aspoendos after the Trojan War. However, there is another legend that the Hittites founded the city.

The roman amphitheater here was built during the 2nd and 3rd centuries during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius., It has been restored and holds up to 15.000 people. If you are lucky and come across a concert or festival being held at the amphitheater during your trip, you should definitely attend!

Turkey - Antalya - Rock tombs in Termessos near Antalya, Turkey

Another ancient city worth seeing is Termessos. Located just 34 kilometers away from Antalya, it really is a can’t-miss for travelers coming to the area.

Make sure to see the amphitheater as well as the ancient streets and upper agora. As you will be climbing to see the views of the Taurus Mountains, make sure that you wear hiking shoes and have plenty of water with you in order to explore the area fully!

Turkey - Perge - Antalya - Turkey. February 20, 2018. Perge Ancient City, Antalya - Turkey.Perge, located 19 km east of Antalya, used to be one of the most important cities of ancient Pamphylia.

Only about 17 kilometers away from Antalya, Perge was the ancient capital city of Pamphylia under the rule of Rome and Greece. There are some temples, a stadium, and huge agoras that survive to today.

Compared to other ancient sites, Perge is less popular and attracts fewer visitors, which makes it a great place to visit if you’re looking to escape the crowds and enjoy Perge’s more tranquil atmosphere.

Do not forget to see Acropolis, the Roman baths, and Hellenistic Gate!

Turkey - Antalya - Olympos beach at Lycean Coast, Turkey

There is a reason why all backpackers head to Olympos. With its bohemian atmosphere, you can chill out at the beach during the day and set up a fire at night. This ancient Lycian city is just 84 kilometers away from Antalya, making it a perfect choice for those looking for a beach holiday away from the crowds.

Animal lovers especially enjoy a visit to Olympos where you can watch the Caretta Caretta sea turtles’ youngsters trying to reach the Mediterranean.

For accommodation, try one of the camps that have tree house bungalows to feel the bohemian sanctuary atmosphere to the fullest, but have insect repellent with you if you’d like to have a good night’s sleep!

You are not allowed to use your car in Olympos and the parking is available at the entrance of the beach. Also be aware that there aren’t any showers or changing rooms on the beach. But the crystal clear water is worth the hassle.

Eternal Flames of Chimera

Turkey - Antalya - Yanartas burning stones is a geographical feature near the Olympos valley and national park in Antalya Province in southwestern Turkey

Do not miss seeing the Eternal Flames of Chimera while in Olympos. It is a constantly burning flame resulting from a natural gas leak. However, the legend says the flame is there because of the fight between Bellerophontes and Chimera.

In order to make the best of the scenery, visit Yanartas around sunset. At night, you will be sitting under a thousand stars with no one around, just the fire and you.

Be aware that there might be scorpions around which love rocky places like Yanartas, so be careful out there!

Raft through the Green Forest

Turkey - Antalya - The old bridge is known as "Bugrum or Oluk" bridge. Koprucay river landscape from Koprulu Canyon National Park in Manavgat, Antalya, Turkey. The Ancient Roman architecture.

If you are a rafting fan who has an adventurous spirit, make sure that you visit Koprulu Canyon National Park, one of Turkey’s best rafting spots. It is 90 kilometers away from the city and home to the longest canyon in Turkey.

As you raft through the forest, you can even get a glimpse of wolves, foxes, and bears.

Hike the Famous Lycian Way

Turkey - Antalya - Gelidonya lighthouse on Lycian Way

The Lycian way begins outside of Antalya and goes for 540 kilometers until it reaches Fethiye . It is known to be one of the longest hiking destinations in the world, with many people finishing it in about 29 days.

There are amazing views of mountains and sea as well as ancient relics that accompany you as you walk along the Mediterranean coast. There is a short hiking route option, too if you prefer, just make sure you follow the route in white and red stripes.

Do not rent a mountain bike, as the road is hard and full of stones. However there are plenty of public transportation options along the trail and you can set aside time to enjoy local paragliding, canoeing, and swimming.

The best time of the year is autumn or spring, as it gets extremely hot in the summer.

Every night you can find a place to stay in small hotels, village houses, and pensions.

Have Dinner at 7 Mehmet

Turkey - Antalya - Plate of sea bream fish in Turkey.

A favorite of locals, get a table at 7 Mehmet to have a romantic dinner. The menu has both fish and meat options, pumpkin dessert, duck and lamb tandoori, and rice with almonds. The fish menu changes by the season.

The address: Meltem Mahallesi, Atatürk Cultural Park, Dumlupınar Bulvarı No: 201, 07030, Muratpaşa

Eat Serpme Borek

Turkey - Antalya - Tasty Pastry Borek and Tea

It is a tradition to eat serpme börek in the morning and Börekçi Tevfik is one of the locals favorite breakfast spots. You can order börek with cheese or with meat inside along with a glass of Turkish tea.

Do not take it away because börek loses its appeal after a while and it is best eaten wrapped while still hot.

The address: Sinan Mah, Peker Cad, 1255 Sok. Ay İşhanı, 07050, Muratpaşa

The Roman Fortress (Hidirlik Kalesi)

Turkey - Antalya - Ruins of the ancient fortress Hidirlik Kalesi in Kaleici. Antalya, Tourkey.

The Roman Fortress is situated on the edge of Karaalioglu Park. It is 14 meters high and is assumed to be a lighthouse or a watchtower built in the 2 nd century.

Locals come here to enjoy the views during sunset and have a glass of tea. The park itself attracts locals as well who want to relax and enjoy the cafes that are situated nearby.

Konyaalti Beach

Turkey - Antalya - Aerial view of beautiful blue gulf and long Konyaalti beach in Antalya, Turkey. Antalya is Turkey's biggest international sea resort located on Turkish Riviera.

Konyaalti Beach is very close to the town center and one of the two main beaches in the city. The beach is pebbly therefore do not expect soft sands under your toes.

Locals head to the beach after work during weekdays or on weekends with their umbrellas and sunbeds. If you are staying close to the city center, you can enjoy the warm sea here. Facilities are available like public toilets and showers. You can also rent umbrellas and sun loungers.

Karst Springs

Turkey - Antalya - Manavgat River Yedipinarlar spring Antalya Turkey

If you want to take a break from historic attractions, you can go outside the city and visit the countryside full of waterfalls, karst springs, and sinkholes. Düdenbaşı, Pınarbaşı, and Kırkgoz are the most popular ones. You can swim in the safe zones of the springs, but keep in mind that the water is way too cold for swimming, even in the summer.

Karain Cave

Turkey - Antalya - Karain cave in Antalya of Turkey. The cave itself consists of three main, spacious chambers, separated by the walls of calcite, and connected by narrow and winding corridors.

The Karain Cave is near Döşemalti, 27 kilometers far away from Antalya. You can combine the trip to the karst springs with a visit to the caves. If you can come, try to visit the cave on a weekday to avoid crowds. The cave has findings from Middle and Lower Paleolithic eras, which also include teeth, and bones from prehistoric times.

Enjoy some Burnt Ice Cream

Turkey - Antalya - The tasty Turkish dondurma ice cream in two glass bowls with coast and Taurus mountains on background, Turkey.

Although most people find it weird, burnt ice cream is one of the city’s famous flavors. When you go to Kas or Demre, you can see a lot of ice cream shops selling burnt ice cream made from goat’s milk. It is intentionally burnt while cooking. In the center, you can try Akdeniz Dondurma or Dondurma Dükkanı, try it alongside with profiterole if you like.

Turkey - Antalya - Lower Duden waterfall (Karpuzkald?ran waterfall). Lara, Antalya, Turkey

Lara Beach is situated in the south of the city and famous for its soft white sand. A lot of beach resorts are also located here, therefore, it can get very crowded during peak season.

You can rent jet-skis or paddleboards if you like or just lay down to get a tan.

Turkey - Antalya - Phaselis ancient city in Kemer of Antalya. Glorious beaches, calm sea, fab snorkeling and all set within ancient ruins that set the imagination. Very nice and historical place very quiet beach.

Phaselis is another nearby ancient city and is situated just 60 kilometers away from Antalya. It’s famous as the spot where Alexander the Great wintered around 334 BC.

You can visit Hadrian’s Arch Gate, temples, a theater, and ancient streets. There is also a museum you can shop in. Take the Olympos Cable Car, which goes up to the summit at 2275 meters of Tahtalı Mountain if you have extra time.

Kocain Magarası

Turkey - Antalya - Kocain monumental stalagmites and stalactites in the cave with the cave entrance and Turkey's largest gallery.

The cave is 45 kilometers away from the city center of Antalya. Its interior is pretty deep; therefore wear shoes with some traction in order not to slip. The cave is 600 meters long.

You will see a Roman cistern at the entrance, prehistoric carvings on the walls, and stalagmites inside.

Where to Stay in Antalya

Turkey - Antalya - Love Antalya, famous fountain in the centre of Antalya, Turkey

We’re in the process of creating comprehensive guides on where to stay in various Turkish cities, but for now, we recommend checking out  Booking.com  as early as possible since many of the best hotels in Antalya sell-out early (especially in the summer).

What to Pack for Antalya

Greece - Crete - Heraklion - Old Venetian Harbor Luggage

We have a guide of  what to pack for Turkey , but here are five things you definitely want to bring with you!

The Lonely Planet Turkey :  a good guidebook can help you with the kinds of safety tips you need if you’re out in the city and feel a bit lost, especially if you don’t have internet or a cell signal. These also have specific neighborhood information that will help you in different parts of the city, and it’s a great supplement to blog posts like this one!

Unlocked Cell Phone:  Stephanie and I both have unlocked cell phones that we bought in Europe (Stephanie uses a  Samsung  and I use an  iPhone ). This allows up to get sim cards when we travel so that we always have the internet. This has gotten us out of so many jams! If you don’t have an unlocked cell phone that can use a Turkish sim card, you can buy a cheaper  unlocked phone online  and bring it with you!

Pacsafe Citysafe  or Other Anti-Theft Bag:  This is the bag both Stephanie and I use for all our travels. It has a pouch with RFID technology so our credit cards can’t get scanned from afar, interlocking zippers to make it harder to pickpocket, and it’s roomy enough to be a perfect sightseeing day bag, yet it’s still quite stylish for all of its security features. If you’d rather bring something smaller, you can pack a  money belt   instead.

Grayl Water Filter :  While the water is *technically* safe to drink in much of Turkey, I would still avoid it. If you don’t want to be buying millions of plastic water bottles, you can get a reusable water bottle that comes with a water filter so that you can stick to the tap water and reduce your plastic waste. If you’ll be traveling outside of the major tourist centers, check if the water is potable locally.

Seabands:  If you get seasick easily, pack some Sea bands or   seasickness pills  so you don’t miss out on the best parts of Turkey – being on the water! A trip to Turkey isn’t complete without a cruise or at least a quick boat trip, so make sure you’re prepared to enjoy it to the fullest!

What are the options? What Antalya excursion you must not miss?

Check out some of the coolest day trips Antalya has to offer.

1. Perge, Side, Aspendos & Waterfalls (click for more details)

Sitting alone in Aspendos theater

A sightseeing day trip to Perge, Side, Aspendos and Kursunlu Falls.

Overall, one of the very best day trips from Antalya.

Not many people know that, but Antalya has some very impressive historical sites. On this day trip you are going to visit three of the most impressive Roman ruins in Antalya. It’s basically an Antalya Roman ruins day trip. With chilling by a waterfall at the end of the day. I, personally, have been to Perge and Aspendos and I can highly recommend those places. You can visit Perge and Aspendos on your own too (more time consuming).

By the way, Perge is the biggest of the three and the more popular. This ancient town is also the easiest to get to Roman ruins near Antalya.

DURATION: 9 hours

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Visiting the ancient town of Perge
  • Aspendos theater
  • Kursunlu falls

2. Full Day Antalya – Pamukkale Tour (click for more details)

Couple walking in Pamukkale, Turkey

Pamukkale tour from Antalya (long day trip).

It’s a very long trip. And it’s also one of the most popular Antalya trips / excursions. A lot of people do a day trip to Pamukkale from Antalya, despite the long travel time. During the day trip you stop at several ancient sites. However, the highlight of the trip is Pamukkale with its impressive snow-white cliffs. The only other similar place in the world is in Oaxaca, Mexico ( Hierve el Agua ).

DURATION: 12 hours

  • Swimming in the thermal pools (Pamukkale)
  • Ancient Hierapolis

3. Taurus Mountains Jeep Safari (click for more details)

Mountain views near Antalya

A full day jeep tour from Antalya (partly off-road).

One of the more fun and adventurous Antalya sightseeing tours.

Tourism hotspots isn’t your thing? Or maybe you just want something more adventurous? And you aren’t afraid to get dirty. Then this off-road jeep safari is a great option to check out. You don’t visit any of the top Antalya tourism hotspots on this tour, you head to small villages instead. And go swimming in a waterfall.

DURATION: 8 hours

  • Off-road driving
  • Visiting small local villages
  • Ucansu waterfall

4. Full-Day City Tour of Antalya (click for more details)

Antalya Old Town

An all-in-one Antalya day tour with a boat ride.

There are many options for boat trips from Antalya harbour. The harbour is right next to the old town. This day tour gives you a little bit of everything — you go on a sightseeing tour through the old town, there is a boat ride, and you visit both the Upper and Lower Duden waterfall . By the way, the latter you can also easily visit on your own, it’s in the city.

DURATION: 10 hours

  • Visiting Antalya Old Town
  • Upper and Lower Duden waterfall

5. Whitewater Rafting in Köprülü Canyon (click for more details)

A section of Martvili Canyon in Georgia

A full-day excursion with white water rafting in Antalya.

One of the more adventurous boat trips Antalya has to offer. Paddling through the fascinating scenery of Köprülü Canyon. Then swimming in crystal clear spring water. And afterwards chilling in the nature. In short, this is what your day can look like in Antalya. It isn’t only about 5-star resorts, lounging by a pool and endless cocktails here in Antalya.

DURATION: 7 hours

  • Rafting near Antalya
  • Taurus mountains

6. Antalya City Tour and Duden Waterfalls (click for more details)

Duden Waterfall Antalya

An full-day Antalya day tour with a boat ride.

It’s a tour that’s very similar to number 4. One of the all-in-one Antalya day tours where you see a bit of everything, from walking through the old town to going on a boat trip to visit an impressive waterfall (Lower Duden waterfall, known also as Karpuzkaldiran waterfall). You also visit the Upper Duden waterfall on this trip. Lunch is included.

Our Best Antalya Travel Tips

Antalya is one of our favorite cities in Turkey.

In 2021, we spent two weeks in Antalya. Half of the time we were in the city, another half — exploring the surroundings. And we loved it. We loved to see how modern Antalya is. How walkable it is, and also how cyclable it is (not everywhere, but great for tourists).  There are also many interesting things to do and places to visit in Antalya. Here are some of the things we have learned about this city – our best Antalya tips.

  • It’s not only all-inclusive resorts. There’s a lot more to Antalya.
  • Public buses in Antalya are good. They go more or less everywhere. They are reliable. And they are cheap. Just get yourself a bus card, top it up for whatever amount you want, and off you go. To find the right bus in Antalya, use Moovit app. At least in 2022, Google Maps isn’t showing public transportation in Antalya.
  • Cycle and walk in Antalya. It’s a great way to see the city.
  • Try local food in Antalya. Turkish food culture is one of the best in the world. Turkey is one of the few places where we have been surprised in a good way at almost any meal (dine-in, takeaway, takeout). It feels like in Turkey you always get so much for your money. Our favorites include their lentil soups and lahmacun (Turkish pizza).
  • Antalya old town can get busy. So, visit it early in the morning. Or even stay there. Here’s one budget hotel in Antalya old town we have stayed at – Efsali Hotel Kaleiçi . It’s simple, but okay, the staff are welcoming and it’s located on a quiet street.
  • Take a tram from the airport. When it’s running again… It’s the most convenient and cheapest way to travel from Antalya airport to the old town.
  • There are two cable cars in Antalya. You can easily go the nearest one, Tunektepe Teleferik Tesisleri Cable Car in Antalya. It’ cheap and it’s worth it. There is also a scenic hike near the cable car station .

Have you visited Antalya? Did you go on any boat trips in Antalya, Turkey? Did you do any day excursions from Antalya? Which, in your opinion, are the best day trips from Antalya?

Book Your Trip Like a PRO

1. Book Your Flight. Find cheap flights using Kiwi.com , Momondo.com . Or subscribe to Dollar Flight Club , if you don’t want to be searching for the flights yourself. Kiwi currently is my first choice.

2. Book Your Accommodation. Booking.com , Agoda.com and Airbnb . I use Booking and Agoda at least a dozen times a year, and Airbnb – when looking for a long-term stay. My best tip is to ALWAYS compare the price. Sometimes the same hotel is cheaper on Booking.com, other times – on Agoda. Always compare the price!

3. Buy Your Travel Insurance . Ekta and SafetyWings are two companies I can recommend. Ekta offers some extra benefits, that will be important for those doing some higher risk activities (make sure to choose the right plan!), while SafetyWings is better for digital nomads. SafetyWings is also very affordable .

One Day in Antalya Itinerary – Top Things to do in Antalya, Turkey

While Turkey is known for the Grand Bazaar and minarets of Istanbul or the Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia, the resort city of Antalya provides an experience you don’t want to leave out from your itinerary. Antalya is an urban metropolis like Istanbul but has the laid back charm that only a city with world-renowned beaches can offer.

antalya turkey day trips

Stroll around the charming old quarter and sip on Turkish coffee while gazing at the Mediterranean or take your swimsuit out for a day at the beach that ends with listening to jazz or dancing at a club playing the latest hits. If you’re more of an adventure buff, go hunting for ruins, trek the towering Taurus Mountains or take the bus to the nearest waterfall. Antalya boasts the best of the Turquoise Coast and is also an excellent base for excursions. Even if you find yourself in the city for just one day, it’ll be the highlight of your trip!

What’s The Best Time To Visit Antalya?

The best time to visit Antalya is during the springtime, which is from March to May . During this time of the year, the temperature ranges from 16 to 25 degrees Celsius, so the summer heat has not yet taken over. The pleasant weather means that you can roam all over without worrying about the heatwave and the resorts are open for you to lounge in. The month of Ramadan also falls during this time, which means that you can indulge in the delicacies of Iftar and see the celebrations up close.

Old Marina, Antalya

The summer months from June to August can get unbearably hot with occasional rain, which can put a damper on your plans. However, if you’re looking to go easy on your budget, visit the off-season months after August. This is when most of Antalya is gearing up for its winter months which sees a small amount of snow and almost no tourists.

For the most part, Antalya is a coastal city most active during the months where the sun is out, and the beaches are filled with tourists. You will have the best luck with festivities, resorts and liveliness during these months. However, winter months have their own peaceful charm, should you wish to avoid the crowds and enjoy the cut in prices.

Antalya Beach

A Few Facts About Antalya

In the words of the Turkish Republic’s founder, Ataturk, “Without a doubt, Antalya is the most beautiful place in the world!”

This exclamation about the city’s heavenly atmosphere is now endorsed by the number of blue flags it holds. As of 2020, Antalya has 206 beaches and five marinas that hold the blue flag. This is the highest number of blue flags held by a county in Turkey and the world.

Old Marina, Antalya

Ever since its inception, Antalya has been a haven surrounded by the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean sea. The city also hosts the Antalya Aquarium, which houses diverse fish and the world’s biggest tunnel. When you visit Antalya, you are bound to step into a natural wonder or an essential remnant of history on every corner.

Gulf of Antalya

One Day In Antalya Itinerary

Start your day by relaxing on the pebbled konyaalti beach.

Start your morning right by visiting one of the two prime beaches in Antalya. Konyaalti is a stretch of cerulean with pebbles instead of sand rimming the waters. It’s the perfect place to dip your feet into the water and go for a swim or to grab a towel and lay back in the shade of your umbrella. You can also grab drinks at the nearby restaurants and enjoy the views of the sea and the Taurus Mountains.

Konyaalti Beach, Antalya

Since Konyaalti Beach is a popular tourist attraction, visiting in the morning means you will have beat the crowds and have the beach (almost) to yourself. After your swim, grab breakfast at one of the chic cafes and restaurants that line the beach. If you’re looking for a traditional breakfast, order a batch of menemen , an egg dish prepared in the Turkish way.

Menemen, Antalya

Don’t forget to grab slippers for walking the beach, as walking barefoot might hurt your legs.

Shop at Lara or MarkAntalya

After breakfast, you can take the bus to Lara, which is a premium neighbourhood in Antalya. Lara has a white sand beach with stunning views if you want to continue your beach escapade. Here you can rent paddle boards or make use of the amenities of the surrounding resorts to lounge in luxury. If not, you can visit the humongous shopping centres like TerraCity and shop till you drop. If you want to stay closer to the city centre, visit the lively MarkAntalya to shop brands such as Berhska, H&M and Zara and then get a sugary treat of Nutella dough balls (a Turkish favourite) at the nearby dessert shops.

Gorge on Turkish delicacies

We’re all familiar with baklava and Turkish delight , but if you sat down to sample all Turkish delicacies , you would never want to leave. Turkey has a myriad of food choices, from street food to grand dinner table dishes. When you grab lunch in Antalya, make sure to sample some of these. You can grab doner kebabs or pilav (rice) at any of the street food shops or go for a Turkish lunch with several small plates and a bottle of Raki (local alcoholic beverage). For a lavish dinner, we’d suggest heading to the docks of Lara or the old harbour, but if you’re looking for something more down to earth, the street food at the university park or near MarkAntalya is your best bet.

Doner Kebab, Antalya

Take a stroll through Karaalioglu Park

Head to the Karaalioglu Park , close to Kaleici , the old quarter, and take in the view of Antalya from up top. The modern park interweaves walkways through the natural scenery of Antalya and is perched upon cliffs overlooking the cerulean Gulf of Antalya. You can also sit in the chic cafes and sip on Turkish tea while gazing upon the ancient Hidirlik Tower or simply have a picnic in the grassy area or on the picnic tables.

Karaalioglu Park, Antalya

Nostalgic Tramway and Antalya Museum

While trams are common public transport in Antalya, this tramway runs only in the city centre and is worth the 2L fee. The nostalgic tramway takes you back to the past as you sit on the rickety old-fashioned tram. The ride offers quite the juxtaposition as you sit in the transport of an older generation and gaze out at the urban landscape. You can end this trip down memory lane by getting down at the Antalya Museum and taking in more of the city’s history. The Antalya Museum is located in the heart of the town and is a great place to see the best of the excavation adventures around Antalya showcased in all their splendour. This tour will take you through the rich timeline of the Turquoise Coast, from the Roman capture and Greek history to Ottoman remnants and more recent finds.

Antalya Museum

The museum is shut on Mondays, so plan your trip accordingly.

Rediscover the charm of the Old Quarter

After you dig into the past, ease into the present with a stroll through the charming Old Quarter, Kaleici . The old quarter is the centre of all the activities in Antalya and is always abuzz with an event or twenty. The place is a blend of old architecture with urban activities with cycling tracks, cafes and pubs alongside old covered markets and antique gems. Enter the old quarter through Hadrian’s Gate, a three-arched marble archway and one of the most opulent entrances to the quarter.

Hadrian’s Gate, Antalya

Kaleici and its alleys are almost made to directionlessly stroll around as you browse through the shops and peddlers wares. After your walk, you can head towards the Old Marina, where you can grab a Turkish coffee and watch the yachts bob in the Mediterranean or hop into one of the “pirate” boats for a sunset tour. Once you’re back you can end the night at one of the famous clubs of Antalya, which are also located in Kaleici or go for dinner at the charming outdoor cafes or hole in the wall retreats.

Old Quarter Market

If you’re shopping for rare finds, make sure that it doesn’t fall under the ‘antiques’ section with immigration as the exports for such items is prohibited.

Explore the lively Antalya in the AM

If the clubs are shut, or you’ve completed your dinner but don’t want to end the night just yet, take the taxi to the university neighbourhood. You can do so from Republic Square, which is eerily empty and hauntingly beautiful at night. Here, the shops don’t close before 4 AM, and the streets are always crowded with students staying up till the wee hours of the morning. You can relax at any of the cafes that also serve hookah or gorge on delicious food if you get midnight munchies.

Day Trips From Antalya

Go digging into the past at aspendos.

Aspendos is one of the many ruins that are spread across the Turquoise Coast and easily accessible from Antalya. What makes this one particularly special is the fact that it is one of the most well-preserved ruins in the world. The 96 metres wide theatre has also doubled up into a movie set on many occasions. While the theatre was built when the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius ruled, it has distinct Greek styles incorporated in its architecture.

From Antalya, you can take the tram to Perge (Aksu Stop) and then take a 20-minute bus ride or take a direct bus from Antalya Otogar (Main Bus Station) takes over an hour.

Witness the beauty of Duden Waterfalls

Visiting the Upper Duden Waterfalls doesn’t take more than an afternoon from Antalya. The site is inside a nature park just 10 kilometres from the city centre. The park is built around the flow of the waterfall, and you can walk to its base and even grab a meal while you’re at it! If you don’t fancy a lunch break, grab a bit of warm corn to accompany you on the walk to the falls and then climb over the stones to reach the Cave of Wishes . While the rocks may be slippery on the way to the cave, you will be privy to a mystical view from the back of waterfalls once you reach there.

Note: You might get a little wet on your way to the cave.

To reach Duden Waterfalls, you can take any of the buses that regularly ply from MarkAntalya.

See the ever-burning flame in Olympos

Olympos is Turkey’s answer to a place where the young roam free and living amongst nature is the norm. While Olympos is most renowned for the ever-burning flame of Chimera, which is a short hike from the town, it’s a symbol of freedom amongst Turkish youth. The town is riddled with 20-somethings partying till dawn and hanging around in tree houses or trekking at the break of dawn. If you want to experience a night in the wild or an adventurous retreat, a day trip to Olympos from Antalya is your best bet.

To reach Olympos, you can take the bus from Antalya Otogar, which leaves every half an hour. It will take you approximately an hour and a half to reach Olympos.

Extra Tips for Visiting Antalya

When you visit Antalya, make sure to grab a card for the bus and tram services. The card, called AntalyaKart, is rechargeable and available at kiosks at the airport and all over the city. You can also track the stations around you, the routes and the arrival time of the buses (live) on the app of the same name. However, the app only works with the internet, so make sure you have a stable plan when planning to travel around. Websites like booking.com and Wikipedia are also banned in Turkey, so you won’t be able to access them unless you’re on an international data pack.

Remember that the public transport is only operational till midnight, after which you may have to rely on taxis. Ensure that you only go by the meter as the taxis may charge you an exorbitant amount for a short distance otherwise.

Make sure you have everything you need

What to pack for your next trip.

Make your next trip as simple and as enjoyable as possible by packing smart. It’s amazing how much stress top travel items can save you, so choose carefully. Things like lightweight travel backpacks, for example, are ideal for short trips and allow you to move around with ease, and a passport holder will make sure you keep your documents safe at all times. Check our travel checklist guide for 2021 to make sure you haven’t missed anything, and travel to your next destination in style and with maximum comfort.

Antalya activities

Antalya activities - It is hard to believe, but even in such a mega-popular an inquisitive traveler manages to find enough funny places outside the tourist trails. There you can taste the local flavor, and merge with the flow of citizens and legitimize with ordinary people in a normal environment To understand foreign life “without bills” — an undoubted deficit, and there is something in it! Take at least a trip on the only mode of transport in the region, moving on the railways — a tram. Modern forms of railway express will take a route for only 2 lira s, which is a third cheaper than bus fare. Moving on separate sections of the underground way, you can imagine yourself in the subway, which in the city simply does not exist. I wonder where we can enjoy the sunbathe and picnic? One of these public beaches on the Waterfront Lara Beach is 18 km from the center. Here the sloping descent into the water is especially loved by families vacationing with kids.

Antalya Turkey

Antalya city.

The popular resort of European tourists with warmth called Antalya, although the spelling involves uttering and writing a word with a soft sign. The historical roots of the city stretch back to an incredibly distant 159 BC. The port settlement was founded by the Greek king Attal II and was originally named Attalia. Citizens and guests honor the memory of the founder and worship the exquisite statue erected in his honor at the crossroads of Hesupka and Hindirlyk central square. The legendary outpost was at all times a tidbit of conquerors and therefore repeatedly passed from hand to hand from the Greeks to the Romans and Turks.

Official statistics show that as of 2015, 2 million people lived in the region. 288 thousand their number has increased. Just over a million of them live in the capital. In the summer season, due to the rise of tourist activity, The population is doubling. However, this does not create any collapse: to receive guests here are prepared with special care.

The subtropical climate of the Mediterranean combines a short, mild winter with heavy rains and a long sultry summer. in winter is very insidious, because cyclones dominate, they are prevented from transiting to the north of the Taurus Mountains. Breath of antiquity

The old town of Kaleici, spread over 35 hectares, keeps almost in its original form many ancient buildings that survived the recent restoration. Buildings of different civilizations, epochs and styles — mute witnesses of the history of the ancient settlement. A few compact hotels and friendly cafes have turned the district into one of the most popular among tourists. Discovered views of the sea and mountains evoke philosophical reflections on the meaning of existence. The entrance to Kaleici is the Hadrian's Gate, a triple triumphal arch of antiquity. To this day, unfortunately, only the first tier of the building has been preserved. Behind the gate, a 38 m high minaret rushing to the sky opens. The monument of Islamic architecture was erected in the 13th century and can be seen from many points in the surrounding area. Hidirlik tower appeared in the 2nd century. It is a stone 14-meter building, about the purpose of which is still disputed: whether it is a lighthouse for ships, part of the fortress wall, or the tomb of a noble Roman. The relatively young historical landmark of the Clock Tower (Saat Kulesi) is of genuine tourist interest. The uncomplicated stone tower, consisting of two tiers, is decorated with facade clocks presented to the Sultan by the Emperor of Germany in the 19th century. monument is considered a symbol of the city. A one-day tour will lead to the famous ruins of the city of Perge, who knew life as early as the 15th century BC..

Natural attractions

Duden Waterfalls (upper and lower) is formed by the Duden River, which originates high in the mountains, 30 km from the city. The power of the lower waterfall is caused by the fall of water into the abyss from the 45-meter cliff. You can observe the phenomenon not only from the shore, but also from the deck of the ship. Kursunlu Waterfalls, together with centuries-old evergreen cedars and pines, envelops travelers with the coolness of the oasis just 22 km from the metropolis. Amazing Antalya

The beautiful city of Antalya on the Mediterranean coast from year to year opens its warm arms to a huge number of tourists. The city has a very stable and mild climate, thanks to which tourists can rest here for as many as 300 days a year. Moreover, the city is famous for its amazingly beautiful hotels and complexes, which look like huge modern castles or fortresses with a huge Turkish flavor and wealth. Also, one cannot fail to mention the amazing `` old city '', which is filled with buildings of the Romans. Separately, guests are attracted by the clear turquoise sea and the picturesque nature of the powerful mountain ranges.

How did the history of Antalya begin? The Greeks in ancient times began to build a huge number of cities for foreign and domestic trade. In 133 BC, the city became a base for surprise attacks on the nearby fortresses of the eastern Mediterranean coast. Well, at the beginning of the 14th century, the city was successfully conquered by the Ottomans, and Antalya rightfully became the capital of the Sanjak. More recently, about half a century ago, the city was completely gray and not developed in terms of tourism, but in just a couple of decades absolutely everything has changed, and Antalya has become an ultra-modern resort with luxury hotels.

Day trips from Antalya

day trips from antalya

The city itself is very conveniently arranged and in almost every area you can find day trips from Antalya to see. We suggest beginning your holiday by starting from the main entrance to the Old Town, through the Hadrian's Gate. The site was built in 130 when the Roman emperor decided to visit Antalya in the past. The building was truly magnificent white marble all around, huge columns, in which were carved images of members of the imperial family.

Above Kaleici, you can observe the huge Yivli minaret, which is 38 meters high. This is the so-called monument of Byzantine Antalya, which was built in 1230. Still, in the old town, not far from the minaret, there is another local attraction - the clock tower, which is the youngest architectural monument in the city. It was built in the 19th century by the order of the German emperor. The chapel consists of several levels and was built of durable polished stone. Have you already wanted to look at these architectural wonders with your own eyes? We will help you with this, choose Excursions in Antalya in 2024 from the travel agency My Antalya Tours and travel with comfort.

Horror crash leaves Brit fighting for life and 15 injured as Turkey tourist buses collide

The 11 injured Brits include a 53-year-old man, who is in a life-threatening condition, Turkish media reports following the crash which happened in the Manavgat district of Antalya

One of the minibuses overturned

  • 07:34, 3 May 2024

Eleven Brits have been injured in a horror crash between tourist minibuses in Turkey .

One of the semi-open vehicles smashed into the back of the other bus in the Manavgat district of Antalya, witnesses say. It is believed it then swerved off the road and overturned - causing passengers to be thrown from the vehicle.

One of those injured, a 53-year-old British man, is in a life-threatening condition, Turkish media reports. Fifteen people, including one Irish tourist, have been hurt in the collision in total.

Several victims were given first aid at the scene, before being taken to nearby hospitals , it is understood. Images of the aftermath show injured people lying on the floor and being treated, while others were seen sitting with blankets around their shoulders. A bright pink overturned safari bus is seen left at the side of the road in some photos.

Several companies offer trips in the region to tourists wanting to see the surrounding countryside and other cultural sights. The Manavgat district is particularly popular with tourists, and the city of Manavgat, on the coastline, is a bustling city with plenty to offer visitors.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals following an incident in Turkey, and are in contact with the local authorities."

Last month, a man died and seven other people - including two children - were hurt after a pylon supporting cable cars collapsed in Turkey. Memiş Gümüş, 54, was killed in the tragedy, which happened just outside the Turkish resort city of Antalya. Six Turkish citizens and one Kyrgyz national were injured, authorities had said.

It is thought Memiş was from Turkey and had fallen into a rocky ravine after the connecting pole fell "for an undetermined reason". Two children are among the other seven injured in the horror at the Tunektepe cable car, popular with tourists.

Photographs in Turkish media showed the battered car swaying from dislodged cables on the side of the rocky mountain as medics tended the wounded. Helicopters equipped with night vision were called in to rescue 184 people left stranded in the cable car system's cabins after the horror unfolded, Antalya mayor Muhittin Böcek said in a statement.

Foreign Office updates Turkey travel advice as UK tourists told 'leave the area'

T he UK Foreign Office has updated its advice for holidaymakers travelling to Turkey. The government advises against travel to specific parts of Turkey, while tourists visiting safe-to-travel areas have been warned to be wary of certain crimes and given guidance on how to keep themselves safe.

Turkey is one of the UK's favourite holiday destinations after Spain, attracting nearly four million British tourists in 2023. Many are drawn by its stunning beaches and mountain ranges, delicious cuisine and fascinating cities - but holidaymakers should always follow official travel advice when jetting off abroad.

The British Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to within 10km of the border with Syria due to fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism. It also advises against all but essential travel to Sirnak city and Hikkari Province. People who travel against the government's advice could see their travel insurance invalidated.

The government updated its travel advice for Turkey on May 1 to include information on health, wildfires, crime, outdoor activities and adventure tourism. See below for a round-up of the government's current travel advice...

Terrorist attacks and protests

Tourists have been told to 'stay aware of their surroundings at all times' due to a high threat of terrorist attacks globally, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets.

Most terrorist attacks have occurred in southeast Turkey, Ankara and Istanbul and anyone visiting these areas has been urged to keep up to date on local news reports and follow the advice of the local authorities. Attacks could happen on places visited by tourists including public buildings, places of worship, airports and large public gatherings.

Conflict in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories has led to heightened tensions and occasional demonstrations can happen in cities and may become violent, the Foreign Office warned. Police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protests and tourists have been warned to avoid all demonstrations and 'leave the area' if one develops.

Holidaymakers have also been urged to be wary of recent crime trends in major tourist areas. Street robberies and pickpocketing are common so travellers should keep their personal belongings secure. There have also been cases of drink and food spiking, so tourists are advised to always buy their own drinks and keep sight of them - and be wary of any strangers who approach you asking to change money, try to take you to a restaurant or nightclub or offer you food or drink.

British consular staff in Turkey received 42 reports of sexual assault including rape in 2023 and most cases happened during summer holidays in coastal tourist areas. Crimes were often committed at night by someone the victim met during the day, including hotel workers, so people in these situations have been warned to 'be extra vigilant'.

Accepting lifts from strangers can also be dangerous. The Foreign Office urges holidaymakers to find a registered taxi and to note down the registration number before entering.

Outdoor activities

Brits taking part in outdoor activities should check that adequate safety precautions are in place, particularly when doing extreme sports. The Foreign Office says: "Only use reputable operators. Make sure you are given full instructions and training before your activity. Make sure your travel insurance covers you for all activities you do."

Specific travel insurance is needed to cover quad biking and insurance sold by hire companies usually only provides third party insurance. If the vehicle is damaged, tourists are likely to be charged and may face arrest if they do not pay. Drivers and passengers must wear helmets and failure to do so may invalidate your insurance. If police catch you not wearing a helmet, you can be fined and have your licence taken away.

The government's latest advice also includes warnings about wildfires, which happen frequently in Turkey during the summer. It reads: "You could get a fine or prison sentence for lighting a fire of any kind or discarding cigarettes in risk areas such as woodland. Barbecues are prohibited in these areas. If there is a wildfire in your area, local authorities may tell you to leave your accommodation. Follow the directions of local authorities."

Planning your next trip? Travel Republic is currently offering up to 67% off the cost of package holidays Turkey. Luxury suitcase brand Antler has also reduced the price of its Ryanair , Jet2 and TUI-approved Brixham Cabin Bag from £170 to £102 in the sale.
