River Walk River Walk free

Many agree that the best way to see San Antonio is by taking a stroll along the River Walk, or Paseo del Rio . San Antonio's most-visited tourist attraction meanders along the banks of the San Antonio River through the center of the city, connecting major attractions like Brackenridge Park and the San Antonio Museum of Art . Flanking the River Walk are dozens of restaurants, boutique hotels and sidewalk cafes shaded by colorful umbrellas. Street performers often fill the air with mariachi music.

If you want to see the River Walk from a different vantage point, try a boat tour. GO RIO offers a variety of cruises, including two-hour dinner cruises, short narrated excursions, private charters and river shuttle service from downtown to Museum Reach. Ticket fees vary depending on what type of journey you want, but you can expect to pay at least $14.50 per person, with discounts for locals, children, seniors and military members.

The Alamo The Alamo free

If there's one thing San Antonio is known for, it's the Alamo. Once a Franciscan mission, it was here that 189 Texans fought and lost their lives in 1836 during a 13-day siege by Mexican ruler, President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The fight sparked Texas' struggle for independence and today, the Alamo stands as a tribute to these men, displaying artifacts belonging to some of the Alamo's most famous defenders, including Davy Crockett and James Bowie. Visit the Alamo Church on your own or by guided tour, and then check out the many other sites of interest and artifacts on the grounds. These include the Long Barrack (the Alamo's oldest building), the Alamo Exhibit (featuring more than 500 artifacts), restored historic cannons and the Statues of Heroes, bronze statues of Alamo soldiers in the Cavalry Courtyard. At the Living History encampment, visitors can learn more about frontier life in early Texas through hands-on demonstrations.

Recent visitors said the site can get rather busy, so try to visit early in the morning or later in the evening. Most travelers also agree that even when it's packed with tourists, the Alamo is a must-see site.

Brackenridge Park Brackenridge Park free

When the River Walk seems too busy, seek refuge from the heat and the swarms of tourists in Brackenridge Park. Its 343 acres offer much in the way of relaxation: rustic stone bridges and shaded walkways are perfect for strolling, and the Japanese Tea Garden beckons to botanists. Dress casual so you can take advantage of Brackenridge's jogging trails, golf course and athletic fields. The park also hosts outdoor concerts in the natural Sunken Garden Theater. In and around the park, you'll find popular attractions like the Witte Museum and the San Antonio Botanical Garden (about a half-mile east).

Past visitors appreciated the park's train, which runs through the zoo and offers an excellent opportunity to get around the large area. The park is also a featured stop on many of the best San Antonio tours .

A San Antonio landmark since 1883, this former brewery is now a mixed-use development that boasts several noteworthy restaurants, the San Antonio campus of the Culinary Institute of America and a bevy of local boutiques, bakeries, bars and coffee shops, in addition to the best boutique hotel in town : Hotel Emma. The grand dame of the Pearl District, Hotel Emma is built around the original 19th-century brew house, and the aesthetic is an elegant, eclectic mix of five-star luxury and South Texas charm. Guests have access to luxurious amenities and two on-site eateries (farm-to-table restaurant Supper and gourmet cafe-market Larder) as well as Sternewirth, the hotel bar.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park San Antonio Missions National Historical Park free

Aside from the Alamo , this is where all of San Antonio's historic missions – Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission Espada and Mission San Juan – are located, making this a must-see site for history buffs. Established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century by Franciscan friars, the missions stand as a reminder of Spanish colonizers' success in spreading Catholicism through the Southwest and into Mexico. Each mission is beautiful in its own way, from the undisturbed frescos at Mission Concepción to the Romanesque arches of Mission San Juan. Scattered around the missions are remnants of granaries, workshops and water mills.

The missions have complicated stories, as many Native Americans who lived within the missions adapted to the Spanish way of life (sometimes willingly), forgoing their religions, languages and customs. However, the missions still retain many of Native American influences including the building frescoes and mission customs. In honor of this history, the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

San Fernando Cathedral San Fernando Cathedral free

If you're touring San Antonio, the San Fernando Cathedral is hard to miss. Still an active house of worship, the cathedral is one of the oldest in the country, constructed in the mid-1700s by colonists from the Canary Islands . It was here that Wild West legend James Bowie was married and that General Antonio López de Santa Anna indicated his plans for the Alamo . Local legend claims that many heroes from the Alamo battle (including Davy Crockett) are buried here in an unmarked tomb. Despite enduring damage from a fire in the 19th century, the San Fernando Cathedral maintains its antique appearance, beckoning you to tour its breathtaking interior.

While the interior is open during the day, travelers insist that you visit the church at night to take advantage of the free light show. Every Tuesday through Sunday at 9 and 9:30 p.m., a dazzling video art installation entitled "The Saga" is projected onto the building's facade.  You'll want to double-check the Main Plaza website to make sure the show is occurring.

Said to be the biggest Mexican market in the U.S., Market Square is a feast for the senses. This three-block plaza has more than 100 local shops and stalls that sell food, folk art, handmade goods, clothes and more. The brightly colored papel picado (a traditional Mexican banner), stirring sounds of mariachi and lingering smell of Tex-Mex will instantly make you feel like you've been transported to Mexico. Make time for a meal (or even just fresh-baked pan dulce, a sweet bread) at Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery. A much-loved local eatery, Mi Tierra is known for its year-round Christmas lights, hearty Mexican comfort fare and always-festive atmosphere.

San Antonio Museum of Art San Antonio Museum of Art

Although it may not be as large as other art museums, the San Antonio Museum of Art is a cultural gem that's not to be missed. It hosts top-notch collections of Native American, Spanish colonial and Latin American art. What's more, the museum houses one of the largest collections of Asian art in the Southwest, not to mention a respectable grouping of contemporary pieces.

Visitors are consistently impressed by the quality of the exhibits featuring work by renowned artists. The museum also holds a variety of special events every year ranging from film series to children's programs. Blue Star Arts Complex Blue Star Arts Complex free

Idyllically set along the San Antonio River, the Blue Star Arts Complex is a vibrant mixed-use property that serves as the nucleus of local art in San Antonio's Southtown. Repurposed warehouses hold shops, restaurants and an arthouse cinema, in addition to studios and galleries. Don't miss the Contemporary at Blue Star, which hosts more than 20 exhibitions each year within its four on-site galleries (and various off-site locations). 

Aside from checking out the art and shops at the Blue Star Arts Complex, one of the most recommended activities is to rent a bicycle from Blue Star Bike Shop to either ride around neighboring King William and Southtown or along the Mission Trail (Blue Star is a trailhead for Mission Reach, which connects four of the five missions to the south). After you return your bike, enjoy beer and a burger at Blue Star Brewing Company, located next door.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Located about 15 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a year-round destination for families and adrenaline-seeking travelers. The park's attractions run the gamut from coasters to slides to pools to go-karts. With shopping options and an assortment of restaurants to boot, it's not hard to spend an entire day (or more) at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Past visitors recommended purchasing the Flash Pass to skip the lines. Long lines are a common complaint at Six Flags, so even if you don't purchase the Flash Pass, be sure to reserve a full day for the park to account for time spent waiting in line.

McNay Art Museum McNay Art Museum

The McNay's collection includes more than 22,000 pieces that range from post-impressionist and modern works to Native American art. Visitors will recognize artists like Edward Hopper, Paul Cézanne, Diego Rivera, Auguste Rodin and Henri Matisse. The museum is housed in a Spanish Colonial Revival residence on 23 acres of pristine green space, originally owned by artist and collector Marion Koogler McNay. The main draw may be the art, but walking around the grounds is an experience in its own right.

Museumgoers say the exhibits are great and appreciate the wide variety of art on displays. They recommend making use of the museum's free hours, which are Thursday night from 4 to 9 p.m. and the first Sunday of every month from noon to 5 p.m.

San Antonio Botanical Garden San Antonio Botanical Garden

Prepare to be awed by the sheer diversity and size of the San Antonio Botanical Garden. This well-tended, 38-acre complex features wildflower-filled meadows, native gardens, a 34-bed culinary garden, an outdoor kitchen that hosts cooking classes taught be local chefs and a Family Adventure Garden with activities for kids. The striking glass structures of the conservatory house tropical palms, ancient ferns and an incredible array of plants from the rainforest to the deserts of Mexico and South Africa. Walking trails stretch out in every direction, encouraging visitors to get up-close to the plant life. 

According to park visitors, it generally takes at least two hours to explore everything.

Spanish Governor's Palace Spanish Governor's Palace

Although it was never actually a palace, this adobe building certainly looks the part with rooms heavily decorated in 18th-century furnishings and a spectacular cobblestone patio. This National Historic Landmark and former seat of the Spanish government (dating back to when San Antonio was the capital of Spain's Texas territory) caters to both history buffs and art lovers. Explore the property at your leisure with a pamphlet given to you at the door.

Recent visitors discourage visiting this site with kids, however, as there's little here to keep tots entertained. They also warn the palace doesn't take too long to go through, so history enthusiasts may be a bit disappointed.

Natural Bridge Caverns Natural Bridge Caverns

The Natural Bridge Caverns are home to the biggest commercial cave system in Texas. Above-ground adventures include zip lining, a rope course, a maze, gem mining, shopping and dining. But the primary reason to visit the caverns is to partake in one of the five underground tour options, which include tours lit by only lanterns and others that explore the caverns' hidden passages.

Recent visitors particularly enjoyed the cavern tours, calling Natural Bridge Caverns a must-see site. Some recommend booking online to guarantee a spot on your desired tour.

Witte Museum Witte Museum

For a relaxing and mostly air-conditioned afternoon, take your kids out for some educational amusement at the Witte Museum. This often-overlooked site delves deep into natural science, anthropology and Texas history with exhibits featuring everything from dinosaurs to cave paintings to tarantulas. You can also take an in-depth look back through Texas' intriguing past by exploring the historic log cabins located on the grounds. And don't forget to check out the rotating special exhibitions covering space and other fascinating topics.

This quirky site has grown in popularity over the years, and visiting families say its collections and interactive features entertain children of all ages.

Morgan's Wonderland Morgan's Wonderland

Morgan's Wonderland is the world's only amusement park designed for children of all abilities. This sprawling, inclusive park was designed by former homebuilder Gordon Hartman — in honor of his daughter, Morgan, who has cognitive and physical disabilities – along with a local team of medical experts, engineers and therapists. There are more than 25 accessible attractions, rides and play areas, including a deluxe carousel, a Ferris wheel, an amphitheater, a catch-and-release fishing lake and a sensory play center. There's also a water park: Morgan's Inspiration Island.

In addition to the accessible rides, families appreciate the friendly, welcoming staff and affordable food offerings. They also like that you can bring in outside food, beverages and coolers, should you want your own refreshments. 

Ruby City Ruby City free

Ruby City is a contemporary art center with a unique origin story. Shortly before artist and megacollector Linda Pace passed away in 2007, she had a vision for a home for her collection of more than 800 pieces of art – a vision that literally came to her in a dream. Pace drew the images from her dream and passed them on to renowned architect Sir David Adjaye, who designed the bright crimson structure. Today, this 14,000-square-foot space is a treasure trove of paintings, sculptures and installations from both local and international artists such as Joan Mitchell, Marina Abramovic and Donald Moffett.

Visitors love Ruby City for its incredible architecture, thought-provoking exhibits and beautiful grounds.

Japanese Tea Garden Japanese Tea Garden free

Featuring koi ponds, arched bridges, shaded paths and a 60-foot waterfall, the Japanese Tea Garden is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Antonio. Developed in 1917, the garden is located in a former rock quarry, which may surprise some given how lush the landscape is today. Native and adaptive Texas tree species abound, and the tiered gardens and floral display are in bloom throughout the year. The restaurant at the garden, Jingu House, offers tasty bites (spring rolls, sandwiches, salads and bowls) and a menu of beer, wine and sake cocktails, if you need to refuel during your visit.

Families with kids, friends, couples and solo visitors all find this tranquil green space enjoyable. Many people come here for a photo-op (it's widely regarded as one of the prettiest places in the city).

The original Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels is at the top of many Texans' summer bucket lists (yes, for adults and kids alike). Overlooking the green, glassy Comal River, this 70-acre water park features a huge variety of pools, river rides and waterslides. When the state's sweltering temperatures take over, there's no better reprieve than lazily tubing the Kristal River; slipping and sliding down body slides like Downhill Racer and Soda Straws; or sipping a frozen cocktail at a swim-up bar.

DoSeum DoSeum

Children of all ages are in for a treat at the DoSeum. With 68,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, there's enough here to keep young brains and bodies engaged for hours. Kids can use their math and reasoning skills at the Spy Academy, work with tools and engage building skills at the Zachry Innovation Station, play with sound and light at the Sensations Studio and splash around outside at WaterWorks. This is just the tip of the iceberg at the DoSeum, whose exhibits are all designed with a sustainable, creative approach and a strong STEM focus. 

Parents recommend arriving early or visiting during the week to avoid long lines. Most say their kids had a great time, but a few note upkeep issues, such as broken and sticky exhibit pieces.

The Buckhorn Saloon & The Texas Ranger Museum The Buckhorn Saloon & The Texas Ranger Museum

It doesn't get more Texas than The Buckhorn Saloon. Visitors can enjoy a beverage at a historic saloon and check out the mounts of more than 500 species of exotic wildlife from around the world. Afterwards, peruse authentic Texas Ranger artifacts including guns, badges, photographs and more at the on-site Texas Ranger Museum. Pick up a cowboy hat at the gift shop to complete the experience. 

If you're at all squeamish about taxidermies, visitors recommended skipping this attraction. The food at the cafe hits the spot. Try the Buckhorn Burger or the Lone Star Chili Bowl, and wash it all down with a Buckarita, a refreshing mix of tequila and prickly pear juice. There's a kids' menu, too.

Both tours are muddy adventures.

You’ll get down and dirty in both tours, but there are some differences between the two.

The NEW St. Mary’s Adventure Tour is a more technical tour with no crawling, more climbing, and takes 2-3 hours.

The Discovery Adventure Tour is a more physically demanding, involves muddy and tight crawlways and takes 3.5-4 hours.

The physical difficulty is moderate to hard, so guests should be physically fit (height/weight limitations may apply).

Our guides will deck you out in caving gear to include helmet, gloves, and harness (as appropriate). Also, a headlamp to serve as your only source of light throughout the journey.

Bring clothes (jeans and long sleeved shirt (recommended) – both of which could get stained or torn) and footwear with ankle support suitable for getting dirty and hiking through muddy areas. Also bring a towel and clean change of clothes and shoes. Shower facilities are provided.

Guests must sign a waiver and a parent or guardian must accompany minors.

Adults-only cruise launches on River Walk in downtown San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Visitors to downtown San Antonio can now hop on an adults-only river barge that’s complete with a mariachi band.

GO RIO, the city’s river barge operator, announced this week that it has launched the Mariachi Sip & Cruise.

The cruise is for people 21 and older, and includes a tour around downtown, entertainment from Mariachi Amador, two drink tickets and a souvenir cup.

Boats depart at 7 p.m. on select dates this month and in May. The tours last 50 minutes and tickets cost $60 each.

GO RIO also announced that for the first time, it will showcase one of its boats during the Fiesta Flambeau Parade on Saturday.

“GO RIO boat captains and Girl Scouts from local troops will ride on the wheeled boat float, giving out GO RIO beads,” a news release states. “Marina, GO RIO’s lively turtle mascot, will lead the crowd in a Flambeau dance party -- be sure to be on the lookout for float #133 so you can join in!”

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade is known as America’s largest illuminated night parade with more than 200 parade entries and a typical attendance of about 750,000 spectators. It’s also broadcasted and livestreamed (on KSAT!) to about 1.5 million more people.

KSAT will broadcast a pre-party from 7-8 p.m., with parade coverage following from 8-11 p.m. The vanguard kicks off at 7:15 p.m. and the main parade starts at 7:45 p.m.

In order for Samara Adventures to ensure our customers and business partners our activities are more enjoyable and safe, we would like to inform you about our policies:

• Samara Adventures reserves the right to cancel any activity due to conditions that put the physical integrity of clients and our staff at risk and will only execute activities in accordance with established company policies. Full refund is given if (on rare occasions) the activity is not executed for reasons beyond our control such as weather, tide levels, wind, etc. We can change to a more suitable activity with an equal or similar degree of difficulty or offer other activity options so that you do not miss a day of fun in Costa Rica. Both our guides and captains help us make the final decision.

• Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, and many other adventures involve some inherent risk and physical exertion, so you must be in a good physical condition without any recent surgery, heart condition, pregnancy, disability or injury. If you take medications, such as allergy pills, and need them with you or have other medical concerns, please inform the guide.

• Costa Rica's natural environment is full of insects, snakes, crocodiles, and other wildlife. In addition, landslides, rock falls and flash floods are possible. We cannot be held responsible for any of the above.

• Samara Adventures has a $150,000 liability insurance policy and is affiliated with a specialized paramedic company. However, we strongly recommend that clients have their own travel insurance with a reputable company before participating in a tour.

• Samara Adventures recommends the following age groups depending on the activity:   -Dolphin Sightseeing & Seaquest Snorkeling , Palo Verde Boat Tour & Turtle Tours: 2 to 75 years old. -Sunset Getaway is for adults only: 18 to 75 years old. -Ocean Kayak & Snorkel Chora Island, Wildlife & Mangrove Kayak Tour : 4 to 75 years old

-Stand Up Paddle: 10 to 65 years old

-Samara Trails Nature Hike: 2 to 75 years old

-Horseback Riding: 4 to 75 years old -Rafting class 3-4: 13 to 65 years old -One Day (Arenal Volcano, Rio Celeste, Monteverde, Miravalles, Rincón de la Vieja): 6 to 70 years old. For those outside the age recommendations or if there is an adult accompanying a child, we ask that clients request and sign a special waiver for these cases. 

• We may cancel any client who finds themselves unable to take a tour for their own safety and/or the safety of other clients and our staff. Clients must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

• We recommend that clients know how to swim and feel comfortable in the water. ' Do not bring valuables to our activities such as jewellery, passports, etc. Samara Adventures and its business partners are not responsible for lost, broken, or stolen items. 

• Please be prepared at pick-up time and be aware of road conditions and, that other clients are being picked up along the way.

• Children 5 years old and under are free on tours operated by Samara Adventures. 

• Private tours come with an additional cost. If you're interested in experiencing our activities, contact us for more details on our exceptional day trips from Costa Rica .

& PAYMENT POLICIES

Reservation.

Dear customers and business partners in Pre-Paid mode, we remind you that your reservations must be paid at least 48 hours before the service to be provided to customers and that requests for reservations for the next day and for the same day (Last Minute), must have the payment before customers receive the requested service,  we can not guarantee the service provided by Samara Adventures until we have received payment.

Dear customers and business partners, please note that in case a reservation is confirmed with a different rate than the one indicated in our price manual, we will adjust it to the correct rate at the time of invoicing. Send proof of payment to [email protected]

Payments can be made through the PayPal platform, credit card, bank transfer and/or deposit or on the signed credit card authorization form (Visa / MasterCard / American Express). Credit cards are charged once the authorization form has been received in our office.

Direct deposits should be made to the Banco Nacional de Costa Rica account in the name of Skynet Tours Sociedad Anónima, with legal identification number 3-101-382398 current account: 200-02-013-004161-8 account IBAN: CR61015101320020041617. For payments made through the PayPal platform, the transaction costs will be assumed by the buyer and not by Samara Adventures.

Reservations will not be confirmed until Samara Adventures acknowledges receipt of payment for the requested service in writing and/or the credit card authorization form.

Cancellations of reservations requested to Samara Adventures must be made 48 hours in advance of the requested service to obtain a full refund of the total amount paid. Cancellations of reservations requested to Samara Adventures 24 hours before the service have a 50% refund of the total amount paid. Cancellations of reservations requested to Samara Adventures less than 24 hours in advance or the same day of the requested service will not obtain a refund, no refund for no-shows.

IMPORTANT: Any cancellation by a client or business partner must be made in writing to [email protected] and must be confirmed by Samara Adventures by the same means. The date of confirmation of the cancellation request by Samara Adventures will determine the cancellation fees applied.

General provisions for customer service at Front Desk

⦁ It is required for our customer to bring their face mask or face cover.

⦁ The number of people in the customer service area will be restricted to a 1.8-meter distance between customers and staff. We have marked the floor to show the customer where they should be standing while waiting on reception, bathroom, office entrance, waiting areas, in case they have to wait for customer attention outside or inside the office.

⦁ We have an isolation zone. In case, we suspect a customer with symptoms.

⦁ We have intensified the cleaning and hygiene measures, especially the surfaces usually touched, like handles, reception furniture, doors knobs, computer equipment, data phones, among others.

⦁ The office will be disinfected: at the beginning of every workday, shift change, and the end of the workday. We will clean desks, chairs, windows, printers, door knobs, computers, telephones, data phones, and other shared instruments.

⦁ We have placed a protocol on a visible area, showing the right way to sneeze, cough, avoid touching your face, other forms of greeting, as well as the risk populations. All of this translated to the most common languages our tourists speak.

⦁ We guarantee access to toilet paper, antibacterial soap, disposable towels for hand drying, gel alcohol on the public bathrooms, which are properly sanitized.

⦁ We will ensure our customers wash their hands before entering the office. A sign has been placed on a visible zone, so that the customer washes their hands according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health.

⦁ We have a cleaning log visible, where the time and the name of the person in charge will be signed. ⦁ The waste generated from COVID-19 cleaning and disinfection will be classified and disposed of. For the proper management of face masks, gloves, and disposable wipes, we have a designated trash can.

⦁ The garbage container within our work facilities is a container, identified for this purpose, and with its respective lid.

⦁ Efforts will be made to minimize the manipulation of paper money and credit cards by the staff. If the coworker has to manipulate money (paper money or coins). He/she won't touch his(her) face after touching money and immediately wash his/her hands.

⦁ We will ask the client to place the money on top of the counter, or another surface as plastic trays for the manipulation of money, we will not receive it directly from the client's hands. The surface will be disinfected after its use.

⦁ We will ask our operation personnel (guides, drivers, and other workers) to wait inside the office only when the number of people inside allows it.

Protocol in case of detection of suspicious people with respiratory symptoms at the Front Desk. External clients (tourist) (Providers)

⦁ Put on gloves.

⦁ Bring a face mask in case the suspicious person (in case they don't have one) and proceed to advise the person to wash his/her hands.

⦁ Take him/her to the Isolation Zone.

⦁ Informs Management and Operations.

⦁ Disinfect the area where that person was and everything they might have touched

⦁ In the given case other customers were near the patient, the medical authorities must be informed.

Protocol for tourists' transportation.

⦁ Indicate the client or passenger that in his/her reservation or contract (email/ WhatsApp/ phone, font desk, other) when traveling to Costa Rica they should have masks in their personal belongings. Since it's compulsory to use them at all times during transportation: y land, air or water, etc..

⦁ They should always have masks for personal use or face protection. It is compulsory to use them inside the transportation unit.

⦁ Always remain in their social bubble.

⦁ They should keep their social distance between people outside their social bubble. The advice distance is 1.8 meters.

⦁ No hugs or hand greetings.

Meeting at the Airports: Juan Santamaria (SJO), Daniel Oduber (LIR), Aeropuerto de Pavas and the small local airports.

The driver will be waiting for you with a name sign in the waiting areas. The driver will be wearing a mask or face protection, and he will guide the transport unit. Before getting into the transportation unit:

⦁ We will ask the client or clients to please wear a mask. It should be a part of your traveling personal belongings. If the customer doesn't have one, the driver will provide a disposable mask.

⦁ The driver will offer gel alcohol for disinfection.

⦁ We will ask the customer to sit as further back as possible to create a safe physical distance. ⦁ The driver will open the doors for access, and to minimize the contact with surfaces.

⦁ The driver will spray your luggage with alcohol or disinfectant.

⦁ We will not allow anyone else to handle your luggage, apart from yourself.

⦁ During the trip, remain using the face mask at all times. If during the trip, you need to make a stop to ear, use the bathroom or other, before getting inside the vehicle, we will ask you to please wash your hands or use the gel alcohol to disinfect your hands.

⦁ The driver will be opening and closing the door at all times.

⦁ The driver will welcome the clients according to the protocols mentioned before. And explain the visitors the importance of following the protocols.

⦁ When getting to the final destination, the driver will drop off the customers in the designated area with their luggage, and the driver will not physically enter the destination.

⦁ The driver will carry a log with the customer's names and where their destinations, stops, and other observations.

⦁ The maximum capacity of the vehicles will be reduced according to the indications given by the Ministry of Health.

Johnny Campbell to Lead Honda True Adventure Tour

American Honda announced today that 11-time Baja 1000 winner Johnny Campbell will lead a hybrid influencer/demo-ride event—the Honda True Adventure Tour—next month.

Based around an adventure motorcycle ride from Northern Washington to Southern California, the event will feature social-media influencers riding Transalp and Africa Twin adventure bikes, with the group making periodic stops at Honda powersports dealerships for public demo rides. Making guest appearances at different points along the ride will be factory Monster Energy Honda riders Ricky Brabec (a two-time Dakar Rally winner) and Skyler Howes.

A total of approximately 1,500 miles in length, the Honda True Adventure Tour will start May 5 in Lakewood, Washington, with Campbell leading a group of four influencers to overnight stops in the Oregon municipalities of Sisters, Eugene and Coos Bay, before they finish up in Eureka, California. There, a second team of influencers will take the baton for an all-California stint, to include overnight stops in Roseville, Paso Robles and Huntington Beach, before the ride makes a ceremonial finish at the American Honda Collection Hall in Torrance on May 14.

Along the route, the group will stop at a trio of Honda powersports dealerships—Lakewood, Washington’s South Bound Motorsports on May 4; Roseville, California’s Roseville Honda Motorsports on May 11; and Huntington Beach, California’s Huntington Beach Honda on May 14. The public is invited to these stops, where they can meet Campbell and join Honda’s demo team in local rides aboard new Honda powersports models, including Transalps and Africa Twins.

The good was the van arrived on time and driver was friendly and drove us right down onto the beach to get onboard. The boat was nice, plenty of space for our group of 6 and the 2 captains. We were taken way out and if we saw 1 we saw a 100 dolphins, lots of jumping tuna fish, a sea turtle, and at the end they cut us up a fresh pineapple that was delicious. The bad...We really didn't do any of the fishing. There wasn't any bait put on the fishing lines that were on a fishing pole while we were trolling, that equaled no fish caught. We were never offered a fishing pole to cast or even to reel in a fish if one of the captains caught a fish. We basically watch the captains people fish. A friend that was in our group was from Costa Rica so he knew how to use the piece of wood (1x10x8 inches long) with hundreds of yards of fishing line on it & a weight to fish with. Our friend put some bait on the hooks and dropped the line, when a fish was snagged he let the others in our group pull it in. That's not easy with bare hands and wet line. Us girls did it but it was tough on the hands. Not the experience any of us was looking for. The previous year a different friend went though a different company and they actually used rod and reel and caught very large fish. We did catch some fish, just enough to bring back and have a light dinner. A good thing about the fishing, is that one captain did gut the fish for us, and that is always very much appreciated. Long story short: The deep sea fishing was not worth the money, but the dolphins were AMAZING! So it wasn't all wasted money. Read more Written April 15, 2024

We had a bit of time to explore the island, I saw iguanas and hundreds of hermit crabs. We then spent a good hour at least snorkeling. Overall, I would have to say the snorkelling at the far west end of playa Samara was more interesting for the number of different types of fish, but…on this trip I got to see a turtle while snorkelling which was the highlight of the trip. An eel and a stingray were also seen. We finished snorkeling and the guides gave us delicious fresh pineapple and watermelon. Finally we kayaked back to finish the trip. We saw a lot of dolphins swimming and jumping out of the water I didn’t snorkel but almost everyone either snorkeled or just swam around and had fun. Fresh fruit snack at the end was delicious. Samara is the perfect destination to experience the  pura vida  in Costa Rica. This laid-back beach town is ideal for a relaxed getaway with friends or family, and it feels like a super safe place to visit in Costa Rica . 

We’ve found this small town is definitely less touristy than other parts of the Guanacaste province . Luckily, there’s still tons to do here, thanks to all of the amazing nature and wildlife around. You can swim with dolphins, go kayaking through mangroves, or ride horses along the beautiful beach – the choice is yours! 

There are many fun activities in Samara , but we think that some are best done as part of a tour. Sometimes this is for safety and practical reasons, like if you’re heading out on a boat or ATV. Other times, it’s simply because your guide can take you to secret wildlife hotspots you would never find on your own.

Best bucket list-worthy tour: When we arrived in Costa Rica, seeing turtles was something we really wanted to do. Luckily, Samara is a great place for this! On this 3.5-hour turtle watching tour , you’ll see turtles nesting or even baby turtles hatching on the beach! It’s an evening tour and the local guides choose which beach to go to depending on where the turtles are. It’s only $57 USD including transportation and can be booked online year-round , although September/October are prime months.

Best combo tour: Don’t just stay on land, get out on the water in Samara! This 3-hour tour takes you to the best places to see dolphins! You’ll watch them play in the waves and also have a chance to spot turtles, stingrays, and whales. One of the best reasons to book a tour in Costa Rica – and more specifically, Samara – is that you get to see so much more wildlife that way. We also found that the tours we did in Samara took us to places we wouldn’t have found on our own. For example, we discovered some amazing snorkel spots in Costa Rica that we wouldn’t have been able to get to otherwise.

Samara is pretty safe overall. But if it’s your first time in Costa Rica, you might feel more comfortable taking a tour. You’ll be with a local guide who ensures your safety throughout and makes sure you don’t venture off anywhere you shouldn’t. 

Last but not least, we also found tours in Samara to be really good value for money! Most of the tours on this list cost less than $60 USD, so you really can’t go wrong. 

What are the best tours in Samara, Costa Rica?

1. dolphin and snorkeling trip at isla chora national wildlife refuge.

One of the (many) amazing things about Costa Rica is that you can see dolphins all along its Pacific Coast. Samara is a fantastic place to go dolphin watching and it’s a really affordable activity here! 

To access the best places for dolphin watching, I recommend taking this 3-hour tour . They pick you up around 8 am and head directly on a dolphin cruise. It’s such a beautiful way to start your morning and it’s hard not to smile when you see these playful creatures!

When we went, we loved watching the dolphins play in the waves, and we also saw turtles and stingrays. If you book this cruise between August and October, or December and April, you might spot some whales , too! 

After the dolphin cruise, you’ll sail to Isla Chora , which is famed for its amazing snorkeling. We went snorkeling here and saw lots of marine life, including a turtle, pufferfish, and lots of pretty reef fish. 

At $58 USD, we think that this tour is amazing value. You essentially get two tours in one! It’s also a great tour to do if you don’t have a lot of time in Samara but still want to experience its fantastic marine life. Snacks, snorkel equipment, and all transport are all included. There’s a maximum of 20 travelers, so it’s not too crowded, either!

2. Horseback Riding on the Beach

Horseback riding is a super popular thing to do in Samara. Riding along the beach is just the perfect setting whether you’re honeymooning in Costa Rica or just looking for a unique activity. 

We recommend  this 2.5-hour horseback tour as the guides are great at encouraging you and showing you what to do if you’re a beginner. Rest assured, you don’t need any horse riding experience to enjoy this tour!

You’ll ride through the jungle in a small group of no more than eight and your guide will point out lots of flora and fauna along the way. You’ll almost certainly see monkeys scampering around! Your trusty steed will take you up a mountain to an amazing viewpoint where you can soak in the beauty of Samara’s wild landscape.

Then, you ride to a gorgeous beach where you can gallop along the shore and end your tour on a high. Riding horses along a stunning, deserted beach is something you only see in movies, and this is a rare opportunity to actually experience it in real life.

This tour is offered Mondays through Saturdays at 8 am and 3 pm. If you do the tour later in the afternoon, you will ride along the beach at sunset, which is such an amazing experience – we recommend doing this if you can!

The experience costs $55 USD per person, and there’s a minimum of two people per booking. The price includes hotel pickup and dropoff, and some photos and videos of the experience. It’s a fantastic price, but we’ve actually seen this tour offered for even cheaper. So, don’t hesitate to check prices for your dates online here !

3. Turtle Nesting Tour

If you’re anything like us, seeing turtles in Costa Rica is high on your list of things to do in the country . But on this 3.5-hour tour , you not only see turtles, you get to watch them nesting and hatching on the beach! 

This really is the kind of experience that’s best done with a guide. They’ll know all of the hotspots for turtle activity and can teach you all about their life cycles. Plus, you may even see baby turtles crawling towards the sea like we did!

This tour will pick you up around 7 pm and take you to Corozalito or Camaronal Beach , depending on the conditions that day. However, if there’s an arribada happening in Ostional Beach (which is 1.5 hours from Samara), your tour will take you there for no extra cost. An arribada is a natural phenomenon when hundreds of turtles come ashore at once to lay their eggs. It’s an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime thing to see and a big pro of this tour as far as we’re concerned!

This turtle tour costs $57 USD per person, including your roundtrip transport and guide, as well as water, juice, and snacks along the way. The very best months to book are September and October, as this is prime turtle time in Samara. However, you can do it year-round, so don’t worry too much if you’re not here during these specific months.

4. Mangrove Kayaking Tour

Costa Rica isn’t all beaches and rainforests! Mangroves are a super interesting ecosystem, and they just so happen to be really fun to kayak through.

This guided tour  takes you down the Ora River, where you’ll kayak through the mangroves. To get an idea of what this looks like, just check out my photo above! Believe me, you’ll feel like an intrepid explorer as you spot monkeys, iguanas, and beautiful birds as you go. 

You’ll also learn a lot about mangroves from your guide. Did you know that they’re basically environmental heroes and absorb 5-6 times as much CO2 as rainforests? We definitely didn’t before taking this tour!

Plus, kayaking along the Ora River is easy, thanks to the calm water. You don’t need to be a paddling pro with super strength to enjoy this tour. As such, it makes for a great family-friendly activity as well.

The kayaking tour costs $66 USD per adult and $47 USD per child (ages 4-10). It lasts for around 3 hours, and there’s a refreshment and fruit break midway through at a beach (where you might even spot turtles nesting if you’re lucky!). The tour covers all your kayaking equipment, including lifevests and roundtrip transportation from your Samara accommodation .

This is such a relaxing, gorgeous day outdoors that you can book directly through Viator .

5. Ocean Kayak and Snorkeling to Chora Island

We absolutely loved  this kayaking tour to Chora Island ! We kayaked from Samara to Chora Island , which took about 30 minutes and was actually quite challenging. This was partly because the sea was choppy in sections but also because the sun was so hot. But honestly, it was all part of the adventure – and arriving at this stunning, secluded beach was a reward in itself!

Once we made it to Chora Island, we got to relax on the beach and cool off in the water. Chora Island is a pristine place, and you’ll probably have the whole beach to yourselves! Honestly, we were so happy to go ashore on this tour. 

The snorkeling was the best part for us, though. The water was super clear, and we got to see turtles, puffer fish, and lots of other tropical fish. Plus, our guide was really helpful and knew tons about the marine life around the island. 

This is a fantastic tour for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, and we highly recommend it. It costs $48 USD including all equipment, hotel pickup and drop off, as well as some snacks on the beach. It’s a great way to make the most of your time in Samara, and we would definitely do it again!

6. Sunset and Wildlife ATV Tour

Samara has gorgeous coastal and mountain scenery, and you can explore it on this Sunset Quad Ride . Not only do you get to enjoy lots of natural beauty, but you also get a thrilling ATV experience! 

You start in the mid-afternoon, and you quite literally get off the beaten track by exploring backroads and dirt trails. When we went, we saw a wild side of Samara that most people don’t experience. As you drive through the trees, keep an eye out for wildlife before reaching a breathtaking mountaintop viewpoint.

You’ll also drive to Barrigona Beach , which is one of the best beaches in Samara. It’s about 10 kilometers (6 miles) out of town, and you need an ATV or a 4WD to get down there. For this reason, it’s always super quiet, and the chances are you’ll be the only people there! This is one of the many reasons we love this tour !

You’ll have time to swim here if you want to, although there is a large swell, so you might just prefer to chill on the white sand instead. The tour ends with a visit to a quiet sunset spot where you’ll have epic views of the vivid sunset over the ocean. Talk about ending on a high!

You’ll need to present your passport and a valid driver’s license to participate in this tour (since you actually drive on the roads). It runs year-round, including during the rainy season. However, we actually love ATV rides at this time of year because, believe it or not, the mud makes it even more fun. Regardless of when you visit Costa Rica , this tour delivers!

Kids as young as 5 can participate, and there are double and single ATVs available. A single ATV costs $124 USD per person, while a double costs $162 USD. Book this ATV adventure to experience it all … jungles, mountains, beaches, and an unforgettable sunset.

7. Safari and Buenavista Beach Horse Riding Tour

This horseback safari is an incredible way to explore the natural beauty of the Guanacaste province . You start with a boat ride, during which your captain will give you an introduction to the area’s unique flora and fauna. 

Once you arrive at the trailhead, you’ll meet your horse and guide and head off to explore the jungle. You’ll see monkeys, birds, reptiles, and maybe even some crocodiles – but don’t worry, it’s from a safe distance on horseback!

There are also several river crossings along the way, which are fun to navigate. Then, you end up on Buenavista Beach . You get to ride along the beach and paddle in the waves, which really is an amazing, bucket list-worthy experience (unless you’re allergic to horses like Bailey!).

You head back to the meeting point via an easy ride through some fields, which are home to wild horses and cows. The whole thing lasts about 2.5 hours which feels like the perfect amount to traverse this terrain on horseback.

Overall, this tour is a lot of fun, and the trails are nice and easy. It really doesn’t matter if you’ve never ridden before! The guides are also really friendly and will even fetch you fresh coconuts from the trees if you get thirsty. 

The experience costs $59 USD, and kids as young as 5 can participate (as long as they’re accompanied by an adult). There’s a maximum of 5 travelers per group, so it’s a really nice, small group. Hotel pickup and drop off aren’t included for this tour, but the meeting point is easy to get to via a scooter or local taxi.

8. Werner Sauter Biological Reserve Hike

The Werner Sauter Biological Reserve is one of the best places to see wildlife in Samara. It’s a private reserve with gorgeous mountain trails that give you epic views over the town’s beautiful beaches. 

This small group tour  will pick you up from town and take you to the park, where you’ll begin a 2.5-hour guided hike through the reserve. The hiking is fairly easy and as you go, your guide will teach you all about the tropical dry forest and why it’s such an important ecosystem for Costa Rica’s wildlife .

On our visit, we discovered why this type of forest is so threatened, and we gained an even deeper appreciation for its beauty. We also saw loads of incredible native animals, including parrots, monkeys, butterflies, deer, and iguanas. 

On this guided tour , you’ll also pass through an organic mango plantation. If you’re hungry, you can help yourself to the fresh mangoes. I mean, talk about a rewarding hike! 

There are two options for the hike – a morning tour at 6:30 am for $47 USD and an afternoon tour at 2:30 pm for $42 USD. For both options, there’s a maximum of 10 people per group. We love that it’s a nice, small tour because you get more personalized attention and can ask questions about what you’re seeing. Where to Stay in Sámara, Costa Rica

Sámara is one of those towns with a huge variety of places to stay. From budget backpacker hostels to luxury hotels, there are great accommodations in Sámara for all budgets. To help you narrow it down, we’ve included our favorites below.

Leyenda Boutique Hotel & Spa – $$$

For luxury travelers or families, I love   Leyenda Boutique Hotel & Spa . This place is spectacular and offers a fitness center, swimming pool, spa, and restaurant. On top of that, it’s located right just over a mile from the beach. From standard double rooms, to family suites to suites with a whirlpool there is an option for couples and groups alike.

Guests seem to love the property’s landscapes and service the most! Prices start at $247 USD which is amazing for a high-end option – so check prices and reserve a luxury room or suite here !

Mid-range – $$

Hotel entre dos aguas – $$.

If you consider yourself a mid-range traveler, then I have a great choice for you that caters to couples.  Hotel Entre Dos Aguas  is a rustic hotel with simple amenities on a beautiful property. Perfect for those who want a true Costa Rican stay. 

All of the rooms have private showers, and some of the rooms have a terrace. You can check availability and book online  here on Booking.com .

Las Mariposas – $

If you’re on a budget, there are lots of options, but not many of them are good.  Las Mariposas  is my top choice, with its location close to the beach. The hostel has a great atmosphere for meeting other travelers and is suited to the social backpacker. They offer a shared kitchen and common spaces, hammocks to relax on the patio, billiards, and karaoke.

A bed in a shared dorm runs about $12 USD, while private rooms start at $30 USD. You can  book this place on Hostelworld  or  Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level. 

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!  

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Samara is the perfect beach town to relax and bask in gorgeous natural scenery. This place is more off-the-beaten-path than other tourist destinations, which is why we recommend tours here! Whether you choose to ride horses, drive ATVs, or kayak through mangroves, you’ll have an incredible time.

‘A Squatter and Her Goat Refused To Leave My San Antonio Home—This Is How I Got Rid of Them’

The house seemed like such a deal.

Daniel Cabrera , a house flipper for 15 years around San Antonio, TX , was excited to buy the five-bedroom, 2.5-bath property on Dahlia Terrace for $175,000. The woman living there was facing foreclosure and agreed to sell him the home.

At closing, he paid the woman her share of the sale money, which amounted to about $12,000. He also gave her a week to move out and hand over the keys.

At that point, the previous owner stopped replying to his texts and calls. When he drove by the house, he saw that it was still very much inhabited—and there was even a goat tied to the front porch.

“When I saw the goat, I’m like, ‘Oh, s–t,’” he says. “Keep in mind, this isn’t some oil town. It’s not the backwoods. We’re in San Antonio!”

Cabrera tried to approach the door, but the goat was not having it.

“It kept coming for me,” he says. “I’m like, ‘I better not get any closer.’ This is crazy. It was a very unique situation.”

Now that his name was on the property’s deed, the previous owner “was a squatter,” he says. “A squatter with a goat.”

Why squatters are so hard to get out

Squatting has become shockingly common in the U.S., with stories of people refusing to vacate properties they neither own nor rent. These trespassers are notoriously difficult to remove due to tenants’ rights laws and in certain states, squatters’ rights.

In New York, for example, any individual who’s lived in a property for 30 days cannot be evicted—even if they had no right to be there in the first place.

In one recent case, Adele Andaloro was even arrested after changing the locks to her childhood house, where she found squatters. (The squatters got to remain in the house.)

On Monday, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation aimed at making it easier for police to intervene if someone lives in a home without legal permission or documentation. The law states that “a tenant should not include a squatter.”

Cabrera, whose company, Sell My House Fast SA TX , has flipped about 200 homes, had never faced a situation like this before.

When the owner of the goat initially contacted him on the Fourth of July weekend, she was facing foreclosure within days. He thought the house would make a great investment, and he wanted to help her.

“She was in a bind,” he says. “And I’m a problem solver.”

He reached out to about 300 law firms to acquire a temporary order to stop the foreclosure. The only lawyer willing to work on a holiday weekend charged him $5,000 instead of the usual $1,200.

“I put so much time, energy, and money into the house,” says Cabrera. “And now she won’t leave and I’m stuck with her and her goat. And it wasn’t a little goat, either. It was a solid-sized goat.”

When a home’s inhabitant refuses to leave

In Texas, a squatter may be able to remain in a property if they’ve lived there and paid taxes for five years. In Cabrera’s case, an attorney who specialized in evictions explained that this woman would be considered a “tenant at sufferance” and had certain rights.

Whether Cabrera’s seller was technically a “squatter” also depends on whom you ask.

“We think of squatters as random individuals who simply move in and take over someone else’s property,” says Texas real estate attorney Keaton Frieberg , who works with Cabrera. “But it is possible to view the previous owner in the goat example as a squatter. In a Texas court opinion, it was mentioned that the ‘defendant’ neither owned nor rented the home but, in simpler terms, was a ‘squatter.’ In Texas, the term is used loosely.”

Regardless, it was abundantly clear to Cabrera and his attorney that the former homeowner had no right to be in the house. Nonetheless, forcing her and her goat out into the street wasn’t an option.

Cabrera’s lawyer posted a three-day eviction notice on the home’s door. (Thankfully, the goat was no longer standing guard.) Yet, the woman stayed.

The next step was for the eviction request to work its way through the court system. After two months, Cabrera’s lawyer attended the hearing for the verdict. Since the former homeowner did not show up, the judge ruled in Cabrera’s favor.

It took about three more weeks (and an additional $500) to get law enforcement to accompany Cabrera to the house.

On Nov. 29—nearly five months after closing on the house—Cabrera returned to the residence with two police officers. The woman wouldn’t open the door, which Cabrera expected. He had brought along a locksmith to open the door. Then he learned the goat was now living in the house.

“The goat butted one of the officers,” says Cabrera. “He said, ‘The goat got me good.’ The officers were like, ‘This is nuts in here.'”

The home was also overrun with cats and dogs. Yet the woman was surprisingly friendly.

“Once the door was open, she immediately came over to us, saying what a nice guy I am and how much I’d helped her,” Cabrera recalls. “I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?'”

Cabrera also had a moving crew with him—and they immediately started removing the woman’s possessions and placing them in the driveway. That’s when they realized the woman was a hoarder.

“It was a lot of trash,” says Cabrera, who also called animal control to retrieve the goat.

“I assumed they were going to take the goat, but they didn’t,” Cabrera says. “I don’t think it’s every day they have to deal with a goat. They had no idea what to do.”

Meanwhile, to get the woman to leave, the police had to threaten to arrest her. She left, but only so far as the driveway, where she sat down on a mattress with a few of her cats.

Cabrera knew the woman had a boyfriend as well as children, but none of them took her with them. The woman’s son did show up for the goat.

The next morning, Cabrera returned to the house to begin renovations. He was stunned to see the woman was still on her mattress in the driveway.

“I feel terrible about anyone sleeping outside all night,” he admits. But by the next day, she was gone.

“I feel for her,” Cabrera admits, surmising that she had mental health issues. He also knows from experience that many homeowners facing foreclosure can become irrationally attached to their homes, holding onto them even when it is in their best interest to sell.

“You have people who are thinking, ‘I’ve lived in this home for 20 years, I raised my kids in this house. This is the first property my husband and I bought,'” says Cabrera. “There’s an emotional connection. Unfortunately, some people can’t accept they’re getting foreclosed on until the sheriff literally comes to the door and kicks you out of the house.”

Homeowners in tough situations like this are much better off selling, he says, noting that this woman “called me at the last possible minute, on a holiday weekend. She would have been foreclosed on in three days. I doubt any of the other local homebuying companies could have helped her. With me, she was given months to find another situation, and she walked away with some money versus walking away with nothing.”

Additionally, she now has no debt and no foreclosure on her credit report .

Evictions involving animals

Frieberg, a partner with Texas Suits who has done “hundreds” of evictions, advises investors to never pay the homeowner until the person has moved out, which can prevent situations like the one Cabrera faced.

If a squatter still refuses to vacate, Frieberg says it can be less expensive to do a “cash for keys” transaction. This is where the investor pays the squatter to leave rather than going through the court system.

“You can give the person money to leave or pick up their moving costs,” Frieberg says. “Investors don’t like to hear that, especially if they’ve already paid for the house, but it can be a lot less expensive and time-consuming than going to court.”

At least a quarter of Frieberg’s evictions involve animals.

“If I know there’s going to be animals at the residence, I call the local shelters,” he says. “Unfortunately, lots of times the shelters are so full, and they’ve got nowhere for these animals. So then I’ll put the animals on Facebook.”

Recently, he says, someone who was evicted left behind eight puppies. Frieberg posted them on Facebook and found them all homes.

If an animal seems dangerous, such as a vicious dog—or in this case, a goat—Frieberg recommends leaving the situation to animal control. However, he only calls the agency as a last resort because, he says, “I don’t know what happens to them.” (City animal control will often euthanize animals because the centers are so full.)

The cost to clear an illegally inhabited house

All told, Cabrera spent $7,500 on legal bills to remove this home’s former owner. He spent an additional $50,000 and two months cleaning up and rehabbing the house.

He quickly sold the house for $295,000, earning a $40,000 profit.

“I should have made more, considering everything I had to go through,” says Cabrera. “But it was a solid investment. Earlier in my career, I may have lost money on this. But by now, I’m good at figuring out if a house will be profitable or not.”

Cabrera says this flip taught him a valuable lesson to never let his emotions sway his judgment. In this case, he’d felt sorry for the woman, which allowed her to take advantage of him.

“When you’re going to a closing, make sure you’re getting possession of the home. Don’t give the owners an allotted time to move out,” he says. “If they have to move out to collect their money, there’s far more incentive for them to leave.”

He tells this goat story as a warning to anyone looking to buy a property inhabited by someone in dire straights, whether due to foreclosure, the inability to pay rent, or other issues.

“A regular homeowner wouldn’t have known what to do. This is the difference between a regular homeowner and an investor,” he says. “I’m more accustomed to difficult scenarios—and this one threw even me.”

The Worthington Farmers Market is to open its summer season May 4 with a major honor to its credit. It has been voted by readers of USA TODAY as the nation's best farmers market.

They must be doing something right at the market that runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon along a stretch of High Street in Old Worthington. The Worthington Farmers Market topped outdoor markets that operate along the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach, Florida, and at an oceanfront park in Honolulu.

The West Palm Beach GreenMarket had been voted No. 1 in USA TODAY's 10 best reader polls for three straight years. This was the first year Worthington's market was nominated by a panel of travel writers and other experts.

"Nearly 100 vendors from the Columbus area converge for the year-round Worthington Farmers Market that adapts to the seasons," USA TODAY wrote.

"In summer, May through October, farmers and producers of high-quality food and plants sell al fresco in the Old Worthington Historic District. The rest of the year, the market goes indoors at The Shops at Worthington Place."

The last indoor market takes place Saturday before it moves outdoors for summer.

Organizers say the Worthington Farmers Market, which began in 1987, should have its highest number of vendors ever this summer.

Columbus Food Adventures another favorite

Another favorite of Columbus foodies also was voted as the nation's best by USA TODAY readers. Columbus Food Adventures , which leads geography and cuisine-based food tours in Columbus and its suburbs, topped a list of nominees that included tours in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans and Chicago.

Here's how Columbus Food Adventures was described by USA TODAY: "From neighborhood walking tours to by-van excursions and private tours, Columbus Food Adventures offers a full menu of ways to meet the area's rich culinary scene. Whether you're a meat-lover, brew-hound, taco fiend or gastronomic globe-trotter, there's a tour to fit your appetite."

Walking tours include the Short North, German Village, Grandview Avenue, Dublin and Old Worthington, while van tours hit local taco trucks or a variety of international restaurants.

Results of a third USA TODAY reader vote also were announced. Budd Dairy Food Hall , the Italian-Village collection of bars and restaurants in an old milk-bottling plant, finished at No. 3 in voting for the nation's best food hall.

Mother Road Market in Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished at the top in national voting, while the Garage Food Hall in Indianapolis finished second.

Budd Dairy was ranked sixth in a list of the best U.S. food halls posted by the global travel site Big 7 Travel .
