Explore the Digital Twin of the Apollo Theater in NYC

apollo Theater

The iconic marquee was lit up. Every seat in the legendary 100-year-old theater was filled. And on the same stage where Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, and James Brown once crooned, the all-star band, Kennedy Administration, stunned the crowd with a gorgeous, transportive performance. The only difference this time is that it all took place in a virtual venue, modeled on a digital scan of the real location, with people attending in real time, at home, from around the globe.

Welcome to the new Apollo Theater—a digital twin of the legendary performance space now quite literally open to anyone in the world with an internet connection.

The virtual Apollo Theater marks a new chapter in the venue’s storied history, which began as a segregated burlesque hall in 1914, reopened as the theater with the renowned Apollo name in 1934, and has since become the burning-hot center of R&B, jazz, soul, gospel, and comedy.

But the virtual theater also marks the beginning of a new era within the events and hospitality industry: With digital twins, attendees no longer need to drive or fly hours to attend an event or performance at an iconic theater; the venue can come to them.

While new to the events industry, the concept of creating digital twins of real-life objects, places, and products was dreamed up decades ago. Today, manufacturers use digital twins to test a product—say, a jet engine—under a variety of circumstances that would be too costly and time-consuming to do with physical materials, and to observe how the asset functions in real time and how it will perform in the future. This is accomplished by tethering the digital twin to its real-world brethren via a “digital thread” that simultaneously streams data back to the digital system, enabling machine learning to constantly analyze what could be improved. The term itself was dreamed up by a NASA technologist in 2010, when the space agency began creating virtual copies of the vehicles it launched into space so that data from their sensors could enable a digital twin to “mirror the life of its flying twin”—and, eventually, reveal its full life cycle before it actually occurred.

Beyond jet engines and spacecraft, vast networks—like GlaxoSmithKline’s vaccine manufacturing system—have used digital twins to figure out how to adjust production, where to expand and where to downsize, how to minimize their carbon footprint, and how to manage their inventory. The 41-square-mile Port of Rotterdam—which dates back to 1360 A.D.—has been developing a twin to coordinate marine traffic that carries nearly half a billion tons of goods across 1,000 ports worldwide. Buildings have very much begun using them too. For instance, University of California, San Francisco Health used a virtual 3D model of the recently opened Precision Cancer Medicine Building at the Mission Bay Hospital to detail with critical precision the positioning of not just plumbing and electrical systems, but hospital equipment.

And now come digital twins of venues like the new Apollo Theater. By tethering the virtual venue to a virtual events platform like Touchcast, which can track and analyze audience attendance, participation, and how event content is consumed in real time, venue owners can get instant feedback and insight into how to make their performances or conferences more successful and engaging.

Since its founding, the Apollo Theater has been both the heartbeat of Harlem and a cherished memory for everyone who has attended a show there. With the new virtual Apollo, the reach of this uniquely special and storied place has been infinitely expanded.

The Apollo has always welcomed everyone—no matter their race, religion, or station in life. And now everyone, everywhere can experience its magic from home.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE APOLLO THEATER

The gorgeous neo-classical theater opened in 194 as the Hertig and Seamon's New Burlesque Theatre.

Like most theaters in the U.S. at that time, this theater was open only to white patrons and the owners offered opportunities only to white performers.

Nearly 20 years later, in 1934, New York's mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, banned burlesque performances and the theater shut down.

The theater reopened as the Apollo Theater and began its new life in 1934 with new owners.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Harlem was a hotbed of culture, from music, arts, literature, poetry and activism. This era came to be known as the 'Harlem Renaissance".

The Apollo catered to New York City's African-American population, many of whom were beginning to move to Harlem in large numbers.

Given the make-up of the neighborhood and new patrons, the owners prioritized offering spots to African-American talent, though they booked white entertainment as well.

Within the next few years, future legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday would be introduced to Harlem audiences on the theater’s weekly Amateur Night.

As they say, the rest is history!

If you have time in your schedule and are here on a Wednesday, we highly recommend you go to Amateur Night (see below).

Many of our guides have been to see shows at the Apollo at least once. Take it from us, is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in New York City!

APOLLO THEATER TOURS

Apollo offers a 60-75 minute tour led by the resident historian of the Apollo Theater, Billy “Mr. Apollo” Mitchell.

It is offered to groups of 20 people or more, but if you are traveling alone or are with a group of fewer than 20, you can join an existing tour if one is scheduled for the date you want to visit.

The tour is not free but is well worth the cost for those who love music, culture, and African-American history.

New York Walking Tours

Mr. Mitchell has been working for the Apollo Theatre since 1965 when he was hired as a teenager to be a backstage gofer for visiting celebrities.

He has witnessed much of the Apollo's history and is full of stories about the legendary performers who have graced this venue.

His passion for the theatre is infectious. He loves his job so much, it is the only place he has ever worked!

SEE A SHOW AT THE APOLLO

If you want to see a show at the Apollo Theater, look at the calendar of concerts here .

You can buy tickets online. Sometimes you may get a promo on Groupon .

If you don't see a performer that interests you, we recommend going to Amateur Night at the Apollo .

Before there was American Idol , before there was The Voice , before there was The X Factor ...there was Amateur Night at the Apollo.

Attending this talent competition is one of the most fun -- and unique! -- ways to spend a Wednesday night in New York City.

There is just no experience like it!

You'll see some really great performers and some not-so-good ones.

But that's ok because you get to boo them off the stage. You are encouraged to boo!

If the audience boos loud enough, the ''Executioner" escorts that performer off stage in not such a polite way.

Great talent gets loud cheers and applause. Some may get a one-way ticket to stardom.

Special Shows:

If you are in town in December, the Apollo hosts an Amateur Night at the Apollo - Holiday Edition .

In December, you can also see a special holiday show, Kwanzaa Celebration: Regeneration Nigh t.

The Apollo Theater

Located on 125th Street , this historic Harlem theatre housed the culturally significant birth of jazz music during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s and today it is the home of the popular television program Showtime at The Apollo, a talent-search show. In the face of emerging gentrification in Harlem, the Apollo is considered to be a stronghold of African-American theatre, culture, and history, and tourists from around the world continue to include a visit to the theatre when they visit New York City.

  • The Apollo Theater was founded in the mid 1800’s but was not used as the Apollo Theater we now know until the post WWI/ Harlem Renaissance era.
  • Theater ownership changed hands numerous times.
  • The theater began hiring African American talent because the neighborhood was becoming predominantly African American and because African American entertainment was cheaper. The audience was still white though, but Apollo was only place that hired African American talent.
  • Major talents were discovered at the Apollo. Some examples include Ella Fitzgerald (who originally intended to dance but was too intimidated and decided to sing instead), Billie Holiday, James Brown, Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Patti Labelle, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, and Lauryn Hill.
  • The theater’s slogan reads, “Where stars are Born and Legends are Made.” This slogan had implications of hope for the entire community during a time of discrimination, segregation, weak economy, and post - World War I.
  • The theater was at its peak during Harlem Renaissance.
  • The theater is now part of a foundation, which works to maintain the glory of the theater and has re-implemented some of its features such as “Late Night at the Apollo” and amateur night. Here is a link to the Apollo Theater virtual tour on Biography.com
  • The theater is now owned by New York state and is officially a state landmark. [1] [2] [3]

Jazz at the Apollo

During the 1920s, when Harlem became home to the Great Migration of African-Americans from Southern rural areas to Northern cities, major changes in music took place in Harlem.

Traditional affluent artists

Louis Armstrong

"Louis Armstrong," Wikipedia, 9 May 2009, [1]

More commonly known as “Satchmo” or “Pops,” Louis Armstrong was one of the earliest and most influential jazz players to make Harlem known to the public. Born in 1901, Armstrong lived in poverty for most of his youth and developed a liking for singing. Eventually his interest in music deepened and he started his famous cornet jazz playing in the ‘20s. Many albums he created were mainly solos, going against the traditional collective improvisation and developing instead a future precedence of soloist records. What made him stand out from the crowd? His personality was very charismatic; he always had a smile on and was out there to entertain, not complain. His gravelly voice also made him instantaneously recognizable as well as his improvisational scats on vocal and cornet. His influence extended into the ‘60s and went well beyond the jazz traditionalist realm; he became an inspiration to all who wanted to make it big out there. Armstrong was your traditional example of the “American dream;” he started out with nothing and yet became a something, and according to critic Steve Leggett, Armstrong was "perhaps the most important American musician of the 20th century." [4]

"Henry 'Red' Allen," Google, 9 May 2009, [2]

Henry "Red" Allen

“Red” is everything Armstrong demonstrated in trumpet playing and beyond. His unique style again, like Satchmo’s, served as a reference for more contemporary players, such as Miles Davis. To go into technique, Red's upper register was so decipherable and his range was phenomenal. Also, he was known for his very loose playing (off-beat) and rhythmic 'womping,' with a mute at the end of the trumpet. By 1924, Allen was playing professionally with the Excelsior Brass Band and the jazz dance bands of Sam Morgan, George Lewis and John Casimir. In his later years, he won the Down Beat awards in both the traditional jazz and the modern jazz categories. His legacy, however, is still maintained in his early days with his supreme virtuosity in trumpet performance. [5] [6]

Major “Swing” Artists

Count Basie

"William 'Count' Basie," Wikipedia, 9 May 2009, [3].

Count Basie helped define the words 'jazz' and 'swing.' He was a master player the piano and organ and also became a composer. In 1936 he founded the Count Basie Orchestra and lead it into permanent fame for almost 50 years. Notable songs performed by Basie include "One O'Clock Jump" and "April In Paris." His style of piano playing, contrary to the improvisation of Armstrong and Red’s jazz, was much more to-the-point and focused on the blues, relying on simple melodic phrases to achieve his harmonies. [7] [8]

Ella Fitzgerald

Also known as the "First Lady of Song", Ella Fitzgerald is considered one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century. Her vocal greatness extended from regular jazz to scat to blues to be-bop to swing to even soft and modern jazz. With a vocal range spanning three octaves, she was noted for her absolute pureness of tone and emotion, her enunciation, phrasing and intonation, and last but not least her "horn-like" improvisational ability. She once did a whole song in scat format. [9]

Influential Blues Artists

"Billie Holiday," Wikipedia, 9 May 2009, [4]

Billie Holliday

She was one of the first prominent female artists to make it big live. Starting her life with no money whatsoever, she in the ‘30s performed at various nightclubs in Harlem, often reducing the audiences to tears. Eventually, she landed at Pod's and Jerry's, a well-known Harlem jazz club. Her vocal style was very deeply personal and an excellent example of an intimate approach to singing, which in this case is very similar to the blues style. Examples of songs she wrote include "God Bless the Child", "Don't Explain", and "Lady Sings the Blues". [10]

The Master of Be-bop

John Birks 'Dizzy' Gillespie

“Dizzy” was a phenomenal trumpet player, equal to the skill of the greats like Miles and Satchmo, who was noted for starting and finishing with one genre of music: bebop. His first bebop recording was in 1944 with Coleman Hawkins and was met with huge success. What made him so special? Recording with Charlie Parker (another influential instrument player) never hurts, but it really has to do with Dizzy’s invention of bebop, a genre so totally different from anything ever heard. The style is similar to jazz with much more improvisation and variation. One second there would be a pure melody and the next three complex harmonies would be introduced. Bebop is a chaotic type of music and yet everything still seems to fit in, and Dizzy with his trumpet and horn-rimmed specs lit the stage, serving also as an excellent mentor for younger players to come. Click here to watch Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong in Umbrella Man [11] [12]

"Dizzy and Armstrong," Hothouse, 9 May 2009, [5]

DID YOU KNOW? • In 1995, the U.S. Post Office issued a Louis Armstrong 32 cents commemorative postage stamp. [13] • Billie Holiday, before becoming a well-known singer, worked as a prostitute in 1930 and was eventually imprisoned for a short time for solicitation. [14] • Dizzy Gillespie claims the origin of his iconic trumpet to be the result of accidental damage caused during a construction job and he liked the effect. [15] • On August 16, 1957, Buddy Holly was allegedly the first white rock and roll performer to play at the Apollo. [16]

Celebrating Harlem's Cultural Heritage

On Saturday, February 21st our class observed African-American history month by going out to the Museum of Natural History and watching films about Harlem's artistic legacy. The entire event culminated in a final performance titled The Final Stomp. The video above is a snapshot of the finale. The performance featured up and coming artists as well as established performers. The younger performers are Michela Marino Lerman and Jason Samuels Smith. Both of these artists are very talented tap dancers who are already building impressive resumes. But the two entertainers who stole the show were Mabel Lee and Harold Cromer. Mabel Lee, the woman in the polka dot dress, glowed on the stage and shared her love for performing with us. She is known as the "Queen of the Talkies" and appeared in the Broadway shows Shuffle Along and Bubbling Brown Sugar . Harold Cromer is a member of the comedic dance group Stump and Stumpy and appeared on Broadway numerous times. Their stage presence and heartfelt performances transcended time and brought us all back to the heyday of Harlem. Here are some of our reactions to the event:

“What really took me was the end, when they performed. They took me back to the ’50s, and for the first time … in my life I felt as though I was, just for fifteen minutes, really back in time, back in that culture. It was amazing.”

“I loved watching Mabel Lee and Harold Cromer dancing how they used to despite their age. They made me feel as though I had a glimpse of how Harlem culture used to be, and wish I’d had more. It just looked like so much fun, and I almost had this second-hand nostalgia, trying to picture what Harlem was like back in its Golden Age.”

Historic Beginnings

Photo of The Apollo Theatre brick building in Renaissance Revival style

Encore, Encore

The Apollo Theatre opened its doors in 1913. Designed by architect C. Clark Jones in a Renaissance Revival style of brick and stone, and beautiful mosaic inlaid with “Apollo” across the floor of the vestibule. In honor of our namesake, we’ve recreated that same look and feel as much as possible.

The cinema could host nearly 900 guests at capacity and drew crowds until its decline in 1955. It was once the best-known movie theater on H Street, a gathering place that brought people together.

Today, it has re-emerged as The Apollo DC — a new center for H Street, drawing people to its luxury apartments, collaborative co-working spaces, Whole Foods Market, and coffee-to-cocktails bar, The Wydown.

Setting The Stage

In 2009, a passionate group of people with decades of experience in the real estate industry set out to build a company for which success could be measured by more than just the numbers: Insight Property Group.

Committed to providing outstanding returns to their financial partners, they knew they also had opportunity to make a lasting positive contribution to their communities and neighborhoods.

Insight focuses on creating partnerships throughout the community, engaging in ongoing exploration about and with the people who will occupy the places we build, and delivering designs that will endure. We want our buildings to make our communities better for generations to come and expect to do right by the people and the communities with whom we partner.

In 1933, Fiorello La Guardia, who would later become NYC’s Mayor, campaigned against burlesque and its bawdy reputation, eventually banning such houses and hastening the closing of Hurtig & Seamon’s. Cohen reopened the place as the 125 th Street Apollo Theater in 1934 with his partner Morris Sussman, who served as manager. The pair changed the format of the shows from burlesque to variety revues and focused their marketing attention on the growing African American community in Harlem.

Two years later, Frank Schiffman and Leo Brecher took over the Apollo, operating the theater until the late 1970s. It closed, then reopened briefly before closing again in 1979. Percy Sutton and a group of private investors stepped in to buy it in 1981 and equipped it with a recording and television studio.

Two years later, the Apollo received state and city landmark status and in 1991, the Apollo Theater Foundation, Inc. was established to manage, fund and oversee programming for the venue. Today, the 1,500 plus seat theater presents concerts performing arts, film screenings, education and community outreach activities.

The notoriously tough audience during this interactive evening voices its preferences as to who will “Be Good or Be Gone!” If the crowd starts to boo the act on stage, the “Executioner” ushers the performer(s) off in an unceremonious exit. At stake is a grand prize of $20,000. Among the first winners of this competition was Ella Fitzgerald in 1934. She was only seventeen years old at the time.

Prior to performing, each individual must rub the Tree of Hope for good luck. Story has it that during the Harlem Renaissance, the original Tree of Hope, a stately elm, was purported to be a good luck charm to all who touched it. It seemed that those who did went on to give successful performances and remained employed.

Unfortunately, when the street was widened, the tree was cut down, but a piece of it was brought back to the Apollo. Today, the stump sits on a pedestal on the stage, where every entertainer can give it the traditional rub for good luck. If you don’t, beware the consequences! Billy illustrates Justin Bieber as an example, who refused to touch it before his 2012 concert, saying, “I don’t need luck.” The power ended up going out in the middle of his show.

photo

Billy has since written an autobiography entitled They Call Me Mr. Apollo after being encouraged to put pen to paper by Michelle Obama. He gave her a tour some years ago and after hearing his many antidotes and adventures, she told him he needed to write a book. It’s clear Billy has much love for this theater and all it’s given him. In return, he has dedicated a lifetime to helping keep its culture alive.

Explore the iconic Apollo Theater on a behind-the-scenes tour

A visit to the Apollo Theater in New York City is often on many tourists’ bucket lists. This storied place is not only Harlem’s most famous historic landmark, but it’s also the birthplace for the careers of countless artists, from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Gladys Knight & the Pips to The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and even Machine Gun Kelly. This is “Where Stars are Born and Legends are Made.”

The story behind the Apollo is as interesting as those who have graced its hollow stage. And to learn about this notable venue, meet Billy Mitchell , also known as “Mr. Apollo,” the theater’s tour guide, official historian and lifelong legend. Having been with the Apollo for over 58 years, Billy possesses a wealth of information and is “The Man.” He regales tour groups, connecting the past, present and future of the theater through his entertaining and inspiring stories. Visitors are transported through the significant eras in Harlem during an engaging presentation that is part performance/part lecture. His backstage memories and tales offer insight that only a true insider can provide.

Billy’s first introduction to the Apollo was on one fateful day in 1965. His mom sent him to Harlem from the South Bronx to borrow some money from an aunt who lived in the area, right across the street from the theater. It was while running this errand that he came face-to-face with Frank Shiffman, co-founder of the Apollo, who asked him if he wanted to make some money. Though Billy was hesitant and apprehensive initially, he accepted this stranger’s offer, which he soon learned involved doing errands for a man named Berry Gordy . Berry was hosting a show called “Motown” at the theater. It was the first time Billy saw The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and a group called the Contours. And he was hooked!

James Brown and Marvin Gaye took Billy under their wing, stressing education and giving him money to further his schooling. He went on to work on Wall Street, but unhappy with his job, he eventually quit to go back to the Apollo as an usher. Opportunities followed and over the years, Billy assumed a variety of positions in different departments of the theater, learning its ins-and-outs. He has done everything from handing out flyers, managing the gift shop, security, marketing, stagehand and group sales to producing and creating the Apollo Theater tour.

As for the theater’s history, it was first owned by Sidney Cohen. The handsome, Neoclassical style building with its domed ceiling, cornices and classical decorations sporting motifs of garlands, wreaths and medallions was designed by George Keister. It opened in 1914, not as the Apollo, but as Hurtig & Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater. During this time, African Americans were not allowed to attend as patrons or to perform.

Today, the 1,500 plus seat theater presents concerts, performing arts, film screenings, education and community outreach activities.

One of its most popular entertainment experiences is Amateur Night at the Apollo, which attracts performers and audiences from all over the world. Held every Wednesday evening and broadcast on the radio, this talent competition has jumpstarted the careers of innumerable singers, dancers, rappers and musicians.

The notoriously tough audience during this interactive evening voices its preferences as to who will “Be Good or Be Gone!” If the crowd starts to boo the act on stage, the “Executioner” ushers the performer(s) off in an unceremonious exit. Rub the Tree of Hope for good luck

During a tour of the Apollo, Billy invites anyone in the group to voluntarily get up on stage and perform. He promotes the opportunity as a badge of honor for those brave enough to strut their stuff. You can sing, dance, tell a joke, rap, etc. The rules are simple: no booing and no judging from the peanut gallery.

Prior to performing, each individual must rub the Tree of Hope for good luck. Story has it that during the Harlem Renaissance, the original Tree of Hope, a stately elm, was purported to be a good luck charm to all who touched it. It seemed that those who did went on to give successful performances and remained employed.

At the end of the tour, everyone is welcomed up on the stage to take photos, touch the Tree of Hope and check out the Wall of Signatures. This wall was started by the stage crew in 1989. Hundreds of major stars and celebs have signed it over the years and it’s covered from top to bottom with the John Hancocks of everyone from Snoop Dog and P. Diddy to John Legend, Bruno Mars, Bruce Springsteen , LeBron James and even President and Mrs. Obama.

Apollo Victoria Theatre Seating Plan

Here at Photoplan, we’re always seeking new opportunities to showcase the versatility of our exceptional 360 Virtual Tours. Recently, we were commissioned to create a series of 360 Virtual Tours featuring full-screen 360 functionality for the Victoria Apollo Theatre in London.

This immersive experience allows users to preview their seats in the theatre and the view they’ll have of the stage. The comprehensive 360 tour encompasses various angles, including the stage, lobby, ticket office, circle middle, circle right, and circle left. This interactive approach to ticket booking instils confidence in customers, ensuring they secure the best possible seats for their budget.

The Victoria Apollo Theatre is a historic venue located in London, England. It was initially built in 1930 as a cinema called the New Victoria Cinema, designed by the architect William Edward Trent. The cinema had a seating capacity of 2,760 and was one of the largest in the country at the time.

In 1976, the cinema was converted into a theatre and renamed the Apollo Victoria Theatre. The theatre underwent extensive renovations to transform it into a suitable venue for musicals, including adding a new stage, orchestra pit, and sound and lighting systems. The first production to be staged at the newly refurbished theatre was the musical “The Sound of Music”.

Over the years, the Apollo Victoria has hosted many successful and popular musicals, including “Starlight Express”, “The Witches of Eastwick”, and “Saturday Night Fever”. However, the theatre is perhaps best known for its long-running production of the hit musical “Wicked”, which has been playing at the venue since 2006.

In recent years, the theatre has continued to attract large audiences with productions such as “Billy Elliot the Musical” and “Mamma Mia!”. In 2020, however, the theatre was forced to close temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened in October of that year with a production of “Hamilton”.

The treasury of our Moscow panoramas is gradually increasing.

We have already been shooting aerial panoramas for 6 years. During this period of time we shot many interesting cities of the world: New York, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Sidney, Miami, Las Vegas, Rio de Janeiro, Dubai, Los Angeles and many others. However, we didn't succeed in shooting Moscow, the city we live in, though we did our best. The case is the flights over Moscow are forbidden except those of Russian Federation Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Response and Russian police. Taking in consideration these administrative restrictions we applied our creativity and resolved this problem by the following:

1) We made a virtual tour over Moscow Encircling Highway :  MEH and Interchanges

2) Yauza, Ramenki, Southern Port

3) In May 2010 near the Crocus-City the first in the world 1 gig pixel panorama was shot from the helicopter. It shows the Kremlin, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Novodevichiy Convent, the TV Tower of Ostankino and many other places of interest.

4) This sphere shot from the height of 1000 m which shows most part of Moscow and regions.

5) Last spring we have shot the panorama of Novodevichiy Convent

6) We have done a virtual tour over Moscow State University

7) Earlier this year we have done a fabulous panoramas of Moscow City business center

8) One of Moscow City panoramas has been converted into stereo format

9) We have created a  giga pixel panorama of the center of Moscow

Also it is worth to view one of the photos by Sergey Semenov devoted to the rehearsal of the Victory Parade of May 9.

It had success on the exhibition  World Seen by the Russians  held in Moscow, on Tverskoy Boulevard in May-June 2011.

And now we would like to introduce a virtual tour around Moscow Kremlin.

Moscow city 360-degree virtual reality tour.

Take the virtual tour of the kremlin, moscow river, saint basil’s cathedral and red square.

The Moscow Kremlin  usually referred to as the Kremlin, is a fortified complex at the heart of Moscow, overlooking the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and the Alexander Garden to the west.

It is the best known of the Kremlins (Russian citadels) and includes five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. Also within this complex is the Grand Kremlin Palace. The complex serves as the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation.

The name “Kremlin” means “fortress inside a city”, and is often also used metonymically to refer to the government of the Russian Federation in a similar sense to how “White House” is used to refer to the Executive Office of the President of the United States. It had previously been used to refer to the government of the Soviet Union (1922–1991) and its highest members (such as general secretaries, premiers, presidents, ministers, and commissars). The term “Kremlinology” refers to the study of Soviet and Russian politics.

All of Moscow’s main streets start at  Red Square , so it’s easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum. In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil’s Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian designs, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colourful mural art.
