Indie-Folk Band, National Park Radio, To Release LP 'Canyons' Their Most Ambitious Project To Date

Canyons , the new full-length album by indie-folk band National Park Radio , is a journey in more than one sense. With a backdrop of some of the most iconic landscapes in America, these 11 all-new original songs capture the essence and emotion of what it means to be human - exploring the hills and valleys of relationships, family, and self-doubt, while navigating the incredibly rough seas of finding purpose and meaning in life. After months of hard work and years in the making, National Park Radio - led by the voices and songwriting of husband/wife duo Stefan & Kerrie Szabo - is proud to call Canyons their finest work to date.

Their first full-length album in over 5 years, Canyons represents a revelation for National Park Radio - high production quality, paired with their developed and meaningful songwriting, is what their music needed all along. In a 30-day fundraising campaign during the Spring of 2022, 500 of their most passionate fans funded over $60,000 for the band to go to Nashville and make a record at a level they had not been able to achieve in the past. Working with producer Nick Bullock in a studio that has produced songs from some of the biggest names in music (Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, and Vince Gill just to name a few), National Park Radio had the opportunity to make something special... And the result speaks for itself.

Canyons is a vast landscape of interesting musical textures and rhythms, supporting the unmistakable harmonies from the life-long couple’s unique voices, singing lyrics that cut to the heart of what life means to them. Love, family, relationships, self-doubt, ambition, and loss are all themes that find their way into this collection, and every song is unique and powerful in its own way, while the energy and dynamics on display throughout the record is truly something special.

National Park Radio released the first single “Wander” on Monday, January 2nd, 2023, with another single dropping every couple of weeks, leading up to the full release of the collection on May 29th, 2023 (Memorial Day).

Emotional, gut-wrenching, but still incredibly hopeful, National Park Radio’s music reverberates important themes about life, love, and difficult choices, all while echoing the enduring beauty of the band’s deep-seated roots in the Ozark Mountains.

Formed in northern Arkansas in 2012, National Park Radio, headed by singer/songwriter Stefan Szabo, have infused the music scene with their unique brand of indie-folk music.

Emerging from the shadows cast by giants Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, and The Avett Brothers, NPR offers the indie-folk world something a little different:

An outstanding blend of incisive songwriting and organic Americana charm alongside a DIY independent lifestyle and a heritage in genuine mountain music.

Szabo (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) self-produced the band’s EP back in 2013, and National Park Radio has never looked back. Initially, the music spread like mountain wildfire throughout the region, earning the band a substantial and incredibly loyal following in their home region.

The success of the EP led to national touring and recording a professionally-produced full-length album named “The Great Divide” in 2016. Since then, National Park Radio became a featured artist in Reverbnation.com‘s CONNECT program, signed with powerhouse PR company All Eyes Media (Jason Isbell, Flogging Molly, Shovels & Rope, Widespread Panic), and secured a distribution deal with SONY/RED . They have opened for national touring acts such as Blitzen Trapper, Kevin Fowler , LOCASH , and The Turnpike Troubadours , and have had a national radio promotion campaign with MM Music .

National Park Radio is Coming to Pullman for a Free Live Performance The National Park Service (NPS) and Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) are pleased to announce a free live concert by the indie-folk music group National Park Radio on June 8th, 2024, at 6pm at Pullman National Historical Park and State Historic Site (610 E. 111th St. Chicago, IL 60628).

The outdoor concert will be on the east side of the historic Car Works and NPS Visitor Center 6 pm – 8 pm. Bring a picnic and your lawn chair to enjoy the free performance. There is limited on-site seating. No tickets or reservations are necessary; we welcome everyone to enjoy this rare chance to experience live music at Chicago’s first National Park Site.

Rep. Mrvan Tours Federal Projects at Michigan City Harbor, Indiana Dunes National Park, and Ports of Indiana – Burns Harbor with USACE

Last week, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan joined with Colonel Kenneth Rockwell, Commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers – Chicago District (USACE), Superintendent Jason Taylor, Indiana Dunes National Park, and Ryan McCoy, Port Director of the Ports of Indiana – Burns Harbor, in a tour of certain federally funded projects across Northwest Indiana.

Specifically, Rep. Mrvan toured the Michigan City Harbor, the Indiana Dunes National Park, and the Ports of Indiana – Burns Harbor.

Congressman Mrvan stated, “Thank you to all the leaders with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Indiana Dunes National Park, and the Ports of Indiana – Burns Harbor for the opportunity to tour transformational economic projects currently being implemented in our region.  I look forward to continuing to collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to bring federal dollars back to our communities that enhance our economic infrastructure and create more good-paying job opportunities for everyone.”

COL Kenneth Rockwell, USACE Chicago District Commander stated, “Our visit with Rep. Frank Mrvan provided an important opportunity to showcase the ongoing work at Michigan City Harbor, the Indiana Shoreline at IDNP, and Burns Harbor.  These projects are critical to protecting and enhancing the communities in Northwest Indiana.”

Jason Taylor, Superintendent of Indiana Dunes National Park, stated, “I appreciated the opportunity to highlight the park’s unique natural resources with Congressman Mrvan, while strengthening our partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

Ryan McCoy, Port Director of the Ports of Indiana – Burns Harbor, stated, “Representative Mrvan’s support for Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor at the federal level is vital to the ongoing expansion of port infrastructure that will increase our role in global trade and create more high-paying jobs for Northwest Indiana.  With the Congressman’s endorsement, Ports of Indiana has applied for nearly $30 million in federal grants that are in addition to the transformational $77 million in infrastructure investments taking place now.  This unprecedented level of investment will dramatically increase port business growth and regional economic development.”

Through the appropriations process and Community Project Funding requests, Congressman Mrvan has helped secure $11,692,000 for the Michigan City Harbor, $6,600,000 for improvements within the Indiana Dunes National Park, and $5,537,000 for the Ports of Indiana – Burns Harbor during his time in Congress.  This federal funding grows the Northwest Indiana economy by enhancing operations and maintenance at our ports of entry and along our shoreline and attracts new people and businesses to our region.

From vasectomies to abortion pills, Planned Parenthood sets up mobile clinic near DNC

The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago throughout the week bringing you  the latest on the Democratic National Convention .

As Democrats began gathering for the first day of their convention , across town, Luis Ayala was getting something he’d been wanting for a while.

“I mean, it was a little uncomfortable,” he said, laughing. “I don’t think it was painful but it was uncomfortable.”

He was a little uncomfortable because he just had a vasectomy.

Ayala is 28 and works as an electrician. His wife saw a social media post about a free reproductive health clinic Planned Parenthood was sponsoring in Chicago during the Democratic convention, and suggested that he sign up.

“I have three kids and pretty much I wanted to stop having kids,” Ayala explained about having the procedure.

“That way I can focus on the three kids that I have and give them the best future they can have.”

His wife, Fabiola Ayala, says they wanted the procedure a few years ago while she was pregnant with their third child.

But another doctor discouraged her husband because he was in his early 20s.

“So I ended up having to get on birth control and I’m ready to remove my birth control and just get off the hormones,” she said.

Luis Ayala was just one of 10 patients who sought vasectomy care at the mobile clinic.

As Democrats meet in Chicago, Illinois' role in abortion access is in the spotlight

In a second exam room on the other side of the RV, Dr. Colleen McNicholas offered prescriptions for abortion pills - which she says patients could take on site or take home, under Illinois law.

Illinois, where Democrats control state government, has become a major access point for patients seeking abortions.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to show how when you have a state like Illinois that prioritizes healthcare access and passes good policy that you can be creative and innovative in how you meet people’s healthcare needs,” Dr. McNicholas said of the clinics presence near the convention.

Planned Parenthood purchased the RV in response to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which allowed most of Illinois’ neighboring states to heavily restrict abortion.

Meeting abortion patients where they are: providers turn to mobile units

McNicholas is Chief Medical Officer for Planned Parenthood of Great Rivers, which serves parts of Missouri and Illinois.

Providing abortion in the region means navigating a variety of challenges including security. The unit was set up inside a fenced lot, with several security guards on hand.

On the perimeter, anti-abortion protestors occasionally clashed with abortion rights activists who were on hand to support the effort.

Anti-abortion demonstrators shouted “abortion is genocide” as patients visited the mobile clinic.

“The truth is we’re used to that. We know that the services that we provide bring out folks who are in opposition,” McNicholas said.

“But the truth is healthcare shouldn’t be politicized,” she added.

Still, in the current political reality, abortion is a key issue that galvanizes each party’s base.

In a statement, National Right to Life President Carol Tobias called the Planned Parenthood clinic “disgusting,” and said it was “not surprising,” given the Democratic Party’s support for abortion rights.

Meanwhile, at the convention, Democrats are showcasing the stories of women who’ve been affected by abortion bans - including a rape victim and patients facing medical complications.

The mobile Planned Parenthood clinic continues for a second day, providing medication abortion through late Tuesday night.
