This New 80Day Rail Trip Is an Epic RoundtheWorld Journey Aboard 7 Luxury Trains

Imagine taking nearly three months to meander across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, reveling in the romantic atmosphere of first-class train travel all the while. From your individual suite on board—or a seat in a gleaming bar car—you’d soak in the unique landscapes of each continent that whoosh past your window, making stops to explore historical marvels, UNESCO World Heritage Sites , and picturesque cities.

It’s possible with a new rail itinerary from train specialists Railbookers . The groundbreaking 80-day “ Around the World by Luxury Train ” voyage is a dream trip for those who enjoy the charm of rail travel: It will allow passengers to see some of the most famous sites on Earth from the opulence of historic train cars. Travelers will enjoy lavish dining, elegant private train cabins, and gorgeous hotel accommodations throughout this marathon trip. All told, the voyage will include journeys on seven of the highest-caliber trains on the planet and call upon more than 20 cities in 13 countries across four continents.

This once-in-a-lifetime adventure begins in Vancouver , where passengers will board the Rocky Mountaineer for a three-day journey through the Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise, and Banff National Park. Guests then hop over to Edinburgh, Scotland , for seven nights on board the Belmond Royal Scotsman , weaving their way by scenic lochs and rocky peaks on a roundtrip journey through the Highlands. Next up is a two-day trip on the iconic Belmond Venice-Simplon Orient Express from Paris to Venice, followed by six nights on The Maharajas’ Express from Delhi to Mumbai, with visits to the Taj Mahal and Jaipur.

This New 80Day Rail Trip Is an Epic RoundtheWorld Journey Aboard 7 Luxury Trains

From there, it’s on to Istanbul to board The Golden Eagle Danube Express , which will whisk passengers away to Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary , sprinkling in tours of ornate castles and charming mountaintop hamlets along the four-night journey. Travelers will then head down to South Africa for an unforgettable safari and three-day sojourn on Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Cape Town . On the final leg of the journey, passengers will jet to Singapore for a magical tour on the newly resumed Belmond Eastern and Oriental Express , which will weave its way to Malaysia, passing lush jungle forests and glittering rivers and returning to Singapore, where this epic journey terminates.

Railbookers designed the monumental itinerary after noticing a significant uptick of travelers seeking back-to-back extravagant train trips. “The demand for luxury rail from our customers continues to grow, and in response, we’ve created the ultimate bucket-list trip,” Frank Marini, Railbookers president and CEO said in a statement . “As we’ve seen a trend to combine itineraries to include multiple luxury trains, we’ve tailor-made this itinerary, along with smaller, customizable itineraries featuring these iconic trains.” Indeed, for those who can’t swing the full 80-day voyage, the company has made it possible to book shorter legs of the trip that are built around each of the individual trains and destinations of the larger, comprehensive itinerary.

If it all sounds like a whirlwind, don’t worry: The joys of slow travel are still emphasized across the voyage. Each stop along the way has plenty of time for sightseeing, sometimes with overnight stays in some of the destinations. Plus, in between the seven rail journeys, there are also longer stays in the best hotels in fascinating cities like London, Florence, Rome , Delhi, Istanbul , and Budapest.

What’s more: Most of the logistics are handled by travel specialists , leaving travelers worry free. Hotel stays, car transfers, several flights, and many meals and sightseeing tours are included in the fare price and organized by Railbookers’ advisors. (Passengers are responsible for arranging their own international air travel.) Among the off-train excursions included in the journey are two full days in a safari lodge in South Africa’s Kruger National Park; ascending the Eiffel Tower and dinner at Moulin Rouge in Paris ; visits to Jasper and Banff national parks in Canada; and a luxury picnic on the shores of Malaysia’s Pulau Payar Marine Park, to name only a few. Travelers also have free time at many of the destinations to explore on their own, if they wish.

This ultimate luxury rail journey departs August 28, 2024. Tickets start at $119,599 per person and can be booked with Railbookers .

Around the World Tours & Travel Guide

Around the World Attractions & Landmarks Guide

World travel is truly one of the most unforgettable experiences. As you visit multiple countries and continents, you gain a deep understanding of hundreds of cultures and forge wonderful connections with people around the world.

A small ship or 'expedition' cruise is one of the most popular modes of travel for a trip around the world. Many young people opt for overland tours to see the world because of budget and the community style. They usually use a few different modes of travel like trains or buses or join small group tours to individual destinations.

You can also design a custom round-the-world trip to suit your preferences for price, duration, accommodation, and more. Choose the countries you wish to visit and super-personalize your world tour for the activities you enjoy.

Luxury Around the World Trips

Imagine waking up in lavish four or five-star accommodations, imbibed with unmatched comfort and elegance. Think boutique lodges nestled in scenic landscapes to high-end homestays steeped in local charm!

That's the essence of our exclusively curated around-the-world luxury tours. Choose one of our private guided world tours to explore iconic landmarks, access hidden gems, and indulge in gastronomic experiences redefining culinary pleasure.

Raise the bar for your travel experience—personalize your world trip and enjoy unparalleled service at every stop tailored to your preferences.

How Long Should You Go For?

A round-the-world trip typically takes longer than a week or two. Your world tour should not be much shorter than one month.

With one month to go around the world, you'll probably stick to one broad region. Long trips are a great way to really learn the nuances and extensiveness of human and geological history and how pronounced they can be in a relatively small area. You'll also gain a unique insight into fascinating cultural similarities and differences.

Most trips around the world are a bit longer than one month, typically between two and four months. The number of countries and continents you'll visit on your world tour can vary quite a bit, mainly based on how you get from place to place and the length of excursion allotted for by the itinerary.

How Much Does a Trip Around the World Cost?

One of the benefits of traveling on a package tour around the world is the cost-cutting aspect. Typically, some of your meals will be covered, along with a good amount of transportation and almost all accommodations (this is an excellent reason to book a small ship cruise).

In addition, your tour will have many activities planned to explore the culture and history of each destination, as well as enjoy the natural beauty with hikes and other exciting outdoor ventures. These activities are not always included in the price, which can be a good thing as it allows you to join as many or as few activities as you'd like, depending on your preferences.

Typically, airfare to and from the start city and ending city to your final destination is not included in the tour price, but after that, you can expect to save a lot in expenses.

Note that you'll be around the same group of people for a very extended period, and your ability to be flexible in each destination will be limited. If you want to stay longer or shorter, this isn't typically an option.

Planning a Trip Around the World on Your Own

Traveling around the world on your own is an entirely different ball game. Transportation and accommodation are usually challenging to budget around. Budget hotels can help; however, finding a good deal can be tiresome. Travel agents can help, but this typically comes with a premium.

Certain airlines offer special round-the-world tickets, which could be an excellent way to book an independent trip around the world if you have miles to cash in. Otherwise, you're a bit stuck with the one-way ticket route. Try booking smaller airlines and shorter flights to keep costs manageable.

Choosing your destination and activities also requires a ton of research. You could spend a hefty amount of time trying to plan this yourself.

How To Pack for a Trip Around the World?

Ironically, you will be better off packing less than more for a longer journey. As you'll be on the move, you want a lighter suitcase and backpack to deal with. It's both more comfortable to move and far easier to store.

That's one significant benefit of traveling by cruise when you go around the world: the luxury of only unpacking once and being able to do laundry on board. You can lock your stateroom, so there's no worry about theft as you roam the boat and enjoy your shore excursions.

  • Winter vs Summer Weather:    Since your tour around the world is likely to cross hemisphere lines more than once, you may experience warm highs and icy lows during your trip — bring clothing that can layer easily.
  • Shoes:    Footwear can easily become a packing challenge since it can take up a lot of space in suitcases. Choose shoes according to the planned activities and terrains. Pack a versatile selection: a pair for relaxation, one for hiking, another for city strolls, and one for a more refined option.
  • Dress Like a Local:    The beauty of a trip around the world is the opportunity to visit many far-flung places with diverse cultures and ways of life. You may encounter many different cultures, some with specific dress expectations. For example, in most Middle Eastern countries, expect to dress modestly—cover shoulders and legs and keep a scarf handy for covering your head. A similar dressing is also a good rule for touring many religious establishments.

around the world in 80 days travel package

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

RTW Ticket from: € 2800  Land services quoted separately

Round the World in 80 days is a classic Adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, 1873. In the story, Phileas Fogg had a tough time trying to travel around the world in 80 days.

ORIGINAL ITINERARY:

London  > Suez – Rail and steamer across the Mediterranean Sea – 7 days Suez  > Mumbai – Steamer across the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean – 13 days Mumbai  > Kolkata – Rail – 3 days Kolkata  > Hong Kong – Steamer across the South China Sea – 13 days Hong Kong > Yokohama – Steamer across the China Sea and the Pacific Ocean – 6 days Yokohama > San Francisco – Steamer across the Pacific Ocean – 22 days San Francisco > New York – Rail – 7 days New York > London – Steamer across the Atlantic Ocean and rail – 9 days

In the 21st century, we have replicated the route, but using a comfortable RTW Ticket: London > Suez (Cairo) > Mumbai – surface – Calcutta > Hong Kong > Yokohama (Tokyo) > San Francisco – surface – New York > London. In its classic form this trip takes 80 days, but of course, here you can dedicate whatever time you have available to do it.

Some experiences you should include:

– Visit the Reform Club in London, hoping to become a member – Explore the Corvin, gothic castle in Transylvania – In Paris, go on the trail of Jules Verne – Admire giant oil tankers that seem to slip in the desert at the Suez Canal – Ride an elephant in India – Go in search of a circus and its ‘Passpartout’ in Yokohama, Japan

Plan Your Trip

Plan your rtw trip.

Finding the right round the world trip planner can be difficult. This is first and foremost because many such tools on the internet are only for planning (and, in some cases, booking) RTW flights. The truly difficult part of planning a trip around the world is deciding where to go, how long to stay and how to arrange your trip, so the content deficit (let alone how rare it is to find a quality world trip planner) is frustrating for many travelers.

The good news? Whether you want to travel all around the world, or simply want to visit multiple continents during a single trip, this guide covers all the bases you’ll need to hit as you plan your trip.

Of course, I’ll also touch on the particulars of buying a RTW ticket, including a somewhat contentious recommendation on my part. I’m about to share a great deal of information with you, but I promise: Planning a RTW trip is much, much easier than it looks.

Booking Round the World Flights

Many a round the world trip planner (which to say, any airline alliance website create for the purpose of selling flights) will tell you that booking a single RTW ticket is essential for a round the world trip. However, I don’t agree with this. In addition to the fact that having a single travel the world for a year itinerary (even a flexible one) can lock you in on a trip that will be anything but predictable, it’s often more cost effective to book individual segments, particularly if you have some miles or points to play with.

around the world in 80 days travel package

Let’s say, for example, that you live in the United States and want to fly around the world westward. After taking advantage of a rock-bottom one-way flight from the US to Japan or China , you can take advantage of low-cost flights as you explore Southeast Asia and Australia , then gradually make your way to Europe (and from there, Africa ), flying to South America before returning home, often for only a few hundred dollars per segment. A round-the-world ticket, on the other hand, which often only includes long-distance flights, can easily cost between $2,000-3,000. And that’s without the fees you’ll certainly have to pay to change it as your plans evolve.

How Long Does a Round the World Trip Take?

Whether or not you work with an around the world trip planner, you should keep in mind that as you plan a round the world trip, the issue of timing can be surprisingly far in the back of your mind, particularly if you’ll be traveling to regions of the world you’ve never visited. While two weeks traveling through Japan or Western Europe can allow you to cover a lot of ground, it’s woefully insufficient in places like India , Africa or even much of South America. In general, it’s safe to assume you’re probably underestimating how long you’ll need to devote to your trip.

around the world in 80 days travel package

Broadly speaking, I’d say the best round the world holidays last a minimum of six months, though I have personally taken epic trips in a shorter amount of time than that. On the other hand, I’d caution against traveling for longer than a year at a time, as being away from your “real life” for such a period can have other impacts on your well-being, ones you might not be able to anticipate right now.

How Much Does a Round the World Trip Cost?

Another deficiency of many a round the world trip planner (which is once again to say a flight booking tool) is that it provides only a piece of the cost puzzle—your round the world trip isn’t only going to cost a few thousand dollars. Generally speaking, the average cost of traveling anywhere in the world is between 50-150 USD per person, per day, which means that a conservative estimate for the cost of the ultimate around the world itinerary for a six-month trip (without your “big” flights) is between $9,000-27,000. Not cheap!

around the world in 80 days travel package

Of course, there are ways to decrease the cost of a travel around the world itinerary, whether you manage to find the cheapest round the world ticket, take advantage of opportunities for free or discounted stays (whether you couch surf or do some sort of volunteer program) or simply keep your dining out and shopping to a minimum. In general, however, I’d recommend over-estimating your budget than under-estimating it, if only so you don’t end up as a “begpacker.”

When to Take a Round the World Trip

When you travel around the world will depend upon where you want to go. While most of the sample round the world routes I’ll recommend in the next section are fairly evergreen, some destinations are better during certain months than others, and planning according to this can influence the rest of your travel trajectory.

around the world in 80 days travel package

For example, let’s assume you want to see the cherry blossoms in Japan , probably the world’s most famous seasonal spectacle. Whether you choose from my round the world trip ideas below or commission a custom 6 month travel itinerary, you’ll want to arrange the rest of your RTW trip to optimize the weather in all your destinations. You might head to Nepal after Japan, for instance, to trek when the country’s famous rhododendrons are blooming, or visit Australia and New Zealand before Japan to catch the tail end of warm weather Down Under.

Round the World Trip Ideas

The best of six continents.

Most round the world trip planners will want to see the “whole world” on their trips—all six inhabited continents, and potentially even Antarctica. Regardless of where your RTW travel originates, the general path you will follow is North America-Asia (Australia/New Zealand)-(Middle East/India) Europe (Africa)-South America-North America, or maybe in reverse depending upon where you start and what time of year you’re traveling.

around the world in 80 days travel package

In terms of a general flight path, this might look something like the following: Los Angeles-Vancouver- Tokyo – Bangkok – Sydney – Dubai – Paris -Cairo-Cape Town-London-Buenos Aires- Bogota -Houston. Needless to say there are countless variations, from a 6 month round the world trip to ones much longer!

Wonders of the World

Rather than taking a comprehensive approach (which can lead to a year or even longer on the road—again, not an option for the majority of travelers), you can start your world travel planner based on a finite list of world wonders, be it classic ones you find on an Asia trip planner like the Great Wall or ones you designate yourself, such as Barcelona ‘s Sagrada Familia church or Ethiopia’s “Door to Hell.”

around the world in 80 days travel package

Assuming you take a more classic route for your around the world itinerary, you might go about planning a round the world trip between wonders as follows. From Chicago to Beijing (for the Great Wall), then to Delhi (for the Taj Mahal), to Cairo (for the Pyramids ), to Athens (for the Acropolis), to London (for Stonehenge), to Rio de Janeiro (for Christ the Redeemer) to New York (for the Statue of Liberty). Again, this is highly customizable!

The Backpacker’s Trail

I’ve taken great pains within this round the world trip planner to be honest and sober about the cost of traveling around the world, but this is still a sort of trip that people on the backpacking spectrum can take. Specifically if you decide to string together affordable destinations like Southeast Asia, India, Eastern Europe, Andean South America and Central America.

around the world in 80 days travel package

For instance, if you’re seeking a cheap around the world itinerary, you might fly from Denver to Kuala Lumpur (via China, as Chinese airlines are the cheapest), then fly to Mumbai or Delhi for a month or two there. From there, head to Ukraine or Poland to begin a month or so backpacking Eastern Europe (I particularly like the Balkans ), before taking a flight (probably a multi-leg one) to Lima (where Peru and Bolivia await) or Cancun, from which can you head south to affordable Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Five-Star Frolic

On the other end up to the spectrum for a world trip itinerary, travelers without a set budget can enjoy a round the world business class (or even first class) romp that pulls out all the stops. Rather than focusing on a set range of destinations, you can plan your trip based on luxurious hotels and experiences, be it a Tanzania safari from the opulent Four Seasons Serengeti , sampling award-winning in-flight products and services from airlines like Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines or dining in foodie capitals like Tokyo and Paris.

around the world in 80 days travel package

If you’re planning a luxury round the world trip, it makes sense to enlist the help of a professional (me or someone else), since the price of such assistance (usually between $100-200 per week of travel) is minimal compared to the overall cost of such a RTW trip.

Other FAQ About RTW Travel

How many stops do you get on a round the world ticket.

Whether you’re planning a 6 month round the world trip or plan to stay on the road for years, I am a proponent of piecemeal booking of air travel, rather than committing yourself to a RTW ticket. Therefore, I consider the number of “stops” permitted on such a ticket to be superfluous.

How do I plan a trip around the world?

Unless you are a very experienced global traveler, I recommend against trying to plan a trip on your trip. Rather, work with a professional (such as Yours Truly) to arrange a travel the world for a year itinerary. Or for longer than a year, or shorter—you get the idea.

Are round the world tickets worth it?

No! As I’ve expressed many times during this round the world itinerary, I am not a fan of RTW plane tickets. They rarely cost less; booking and changing them requires a pedantic phone call—or rather phone calls, since you’ll have to call in every time you want to make a modification.

Round the World Trip Planning

The best round the world trips are the ones where you get out on the road and go where the wind takes you, but that’s not realistic for most people. Whether because of finite funds or a “real life” you need to get back to, round the world trips require more planning than you’d probably like, even if you’re generally an adventurous and spontaneous traveler.

“So,” you might be asking, “can you plan my round the world trip for me?” The answer is yes, though there are a couple caveats. Because of the length and breadth of most RTW trips, many travelers want a more skeletal version of my typical “Travel Coaching” itinerary, which is typical extremely detailed and includes day-by-day recommendations. As a result, my pricing for planning RTW itineraries differs from what I’ve published on my Travel Coaching page , so I’d advise emailing me directly with any inquiries.

The Bottom Line

No matter how extensive a round the world trip planner you’ve been seeking, I’m confident that mine has met your needs. For most travelers, it’s simply a matter of learning your RTW flight booking options, assessing the cost of your RTW trip and deciding upon destinations and routing. However, others might want to hire a world trip planner (or a least a skeleton of it, which puts in place a broad trajectory) on their behalf.

How to budget for a trip around the world

Dec 11, 2019 • 5 min read

Bundling visas is one way you can shave your long-term travel budget © maybefalse / Getty Images

In Around the World in 80 Days , Phileas Fogg bets his friends at London ’s posh Reform Club that he can circumnavigate the globe in under three months. His fictional expenses were £20,000, and for nearly a century and a half, that number somehow stuck as the price for seeing the world.

Despite the fact that author Jules Verne actually budgeted the equivalent of £2,242,900 in today’s money, some experienced world travelers will still tell you that $20,000USD is the baseline cost for a single person on a year-long around-the-world adventure. While that comes out to just under $55 per day, other globetrotters will insist that you’ll need at least $100 or more per day to travel comfortably.

A black and white still from the 1956 film version of Around the World in 80 Days. Monsieur Gasse and Passepartout are two gentleman in black coats and ties with slick hair and are holding a brochure advertising destinations like La Turouis, Bali, Japan, Java, Egypt, and India.

So how do you figure out what figure is right for you?

My husband and I spent 12 months visiting over 100 countries on all seven continents, and our day-to-day budget covered a huge range of expenditures.

In Southeast Asia , it was easy to travel like royalty for next to nothing. Comfortable hotel stays that included a lavish breakfast for two could be found for around $30 a night. Huge bowls of savory dumplings were just $2 apiece, and centuries-old temples and gardens could be toured for as little as $1 a ticket.

A warm, slightly hazy shot with the tones of a vintage photo showing the hillside town of Sofia, Bulgaria. A simple stone arch in the foreground guides the viewer's eye up a broad street between the medieval houses and towards the large Saint Aleksandar Nevski Cathedral on the hill in the central background.

Eastern Europe was equally affordable, with bed-and-breakfast accommodations for under $30 a night, rental cars with unlimited mileage for just $17 a day, country-to-country bus passes for $19 or less, and a number of ancient castles and cathedrals open to the public for free.

At the other end of the spending spectrum, our daily budget flared to $820 per person for an 11-day expedition to Antarctica . The cruise included three extravagant meals a day, a private cabin with a large ocean-view window and en suite bathroom, and all transportation and excursions. But for $18,000, shouldn’t it be all-inclusive?

There are limitless ways to see the world, from holing up in luxury hotels to surfing couches, so before you can begin crunching numbers, you need to make some decisions. Here are the top questions to ask as you start to create your around-the-world budget.

A pair of hands with a wedding band and a tan cable knit sweater visible, uses a black and gold fountain ballpoint pen to copy times off a large bus schedule at a station or stop into a small personal diary.

Are you planning the trip yourself?

My husband loves trip planning. It is arguably his favorite hobby, aside from the travel itself. He will pore over flight schedules, train timetables and bus routes while keeping endless spreadsheets of costs and combinations and codes.

We typically travel in one direction (either moving continually eastward or westward) and book only one-way flights. It keeps us from wasting time and money by retracing our steps, but this kind of detailed planning is not for the faint of heart. It took him a year and a half to plan our around-the-world adventure.

Ready-made trips

If a package deal is more your style, then you’ll find plenty of ready-made options. Several cruise lines will sail you to half a dozen countries in a month starting around $7,000, or you can spend half a year at sea and visit three dozen countries or more for upwards of $65,000 per person. We’re talking interior cabins without all the bells and whistles, but all you have to do is show up.

Prefer the air over the sea? You can regularly find cheap flights with long layovers in two or three cities for around $1,500 round trip. For example, one recently multi-airline itinerary on offer featured travel from London to San Francisco , Honolulu , Samoa , Fiji , New Zealand , Sydney , Singapore and Athens before returning to the UK five weeks later, all for $1253 (£950).

A pair of Euro coins sits on a Etats Schengen visa along with a maroon passport stuffed with paper Euro bills

How fancy are you feeling?

The level of luxury you expect from your around-the-world experience has a direct effect on your bottom line. Do you imagine yourself in glittering cities like Paris , Rome , Dubai , Singapore, Sydney, Los Angeles and New York ? Better bring the big bucks, even for a long weekend. Are countries like Thailand , Cambodia , Morocco , Portugal , Bulgaria , Romania , Colombia and Peru more your style? You could travel for several weeks on the same budget.

Once you’ve narrowed down potential destinations, take a look at places you can visit without paying for a visa. Many countries have reciprocal relationships that allow visitors holding certain passports to enter for free. You can also find regional deals that bundle countries, like the European Schengen Visa or the KAZA UniVisa that offers discounts to travelers visiting both Zambia and Zimbabwe . Don’t forget about required vaccinations for some destinations, too, since they can be pricey and often aren’t covered by regular health insurance.

A pair of women peruse refrigerated goods at a grocery store in Hanoi, Vietnam

Destinations definitely makes a difference, but so do your day-to-day choices. Are you willing to take a bus instead of a taxi? Stay at a hostel rather than a hotel? Sip a soda in lieu of champagne? Our travel research includes typical costs for transportation and accommodation, but we also consider how much daily expenses like food and drink will be.

Cost of living calculators like Numbeo give useful benchmarks for things such as taxi fares, groceries and gasoline, and you can see prices in both the local currency and your own currency, which helps you learn the conversion rates, too.

Can you save money along the way?

Establishing a travel budget ahead of time is important, but once you leave home, it’s easy to ignore the numbers and convince yourself that you only live once. That’s why we sneak in some money-saving tactics along the way that help us keep things in balance.

A tow-headed baby runs through a park with a reusable water bottle while her mother does yoga in the background in a purple top and black leggings. A yellow bicycle is parked nearby with a green bag hanging from the handlebars.

Many travelers like to play it safe by buying bottled water, but all those dollars (and all that plastic) add up. We carry a lightweight, reusable water bottle and an ultraviolet light purifying pen wherever we go, which saved us over $1,000 on our year-long trip and kept our stomachs settled on all seven continents.

We will also go to great lengths to avoid checking bags and paying those extra fees on planes and trains. Traveling with only carry-on luggage shaved nearly $3,000 off our expenses and ensured we never missed a connection while waiting at the baggage carousel.

The bottom line

There is no one-size-fits-all number for an around-the-world adventure. Your budget on the road is as personal as your budget at home. But you can approach it one of two ways: either begin with the destination in mind and plan accordingly, or start with your budget and see how far it will take you.

Go Around the World in 80 Days in a Jules Verne-Inspired Trip With Airbnb

When Jules Verne published Around the World in 80 Days in 1873, travelers didn't have Airbnb. Phineas Fogg's mission to circumnavigate the globe is still ambitious by today's standards, but by providing food, comfortable accommodations, and modern transportation, Airbnb aims to create a more practical version of the experience.

In celebration of the launch of Airbnb Adventures , a feature that lets customers browse multi-day experiences as well as vacation rentals, Airbnb is offering an Around the World in 80 Days adventure. Travelers who sign up for the trip will visit 18 countries across six continents, exploring such places as Japan, the UK, and the U.S.

During the 80-day trek, guests will stay in a variety of accommodations, including hotels, campsites, boats, homes, and eco-lodges. They will also take various modes of transportation to reach each stop. Naturally, hot air ballon travel, an iconic part of the 1956 movie adaptation, is featured on the itinerary. Meals and drinks are also included in the package.

The international tour will be available to book at $5000 per person beginning Thursday, June 20. The trip departs from London, the same way Phineas Fogg's journey starts in the novel, and guests will return to England 12 weeks later. If you're looking to take a vacation that requires less travel, Airbnb offers some famous rentals located in the U.S.

Mental Floss has affiliate relationships with certain retailers and may receive a small percentage of any sale. But we choose all products independently and only get commission on items you buy and don't return, so we're only happy if you're happy. Thanks for helping us pay the bills!

‘I see that it is by no means useless to travel, if a man wants to see something new.’

― Jules Verne, Around the World in 80 Days

around-the-world-in-80-days

Published in 1873, Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel has become synonymous with travel over the years. It follows the travels of Phileas Fogg, who makes a £ 20,000-bet with his friends at the Reform Club that, with the opening of a new railway section in India, it was now possible to travel around the world in 80 days (which in those days of travel by sea and road, was a near-impossible feat!) So, along with his French valet Passepartout, Fogg sets off on an epic adventure that takes him all over the world. Here’s how they did it, and how you can take that epic journey for yourself today! #TravelThroughFiction

London to Suez

Then: Fogg and Passepartout begin their journey by train through Europe to the Mediterranean coast, and then by steamer to Egypt.

Now : Start off your journey by flying to Rome. Stay for a few days (or as many days as you like: you don’t have a bet to win!) to explore its major attractions . Then head down to the Mediterranean coast , either by flight or train, to spend some time at Nice or Cannes or catch a flight straight to Cairo, heart of Egypt, to explore the ancient city and its pyramids.

around-the-world-in-80-days

Suez to Bombay and Calcutta

Then : Fogg and Passepartout then set off aboard the Mongolia to reach Bombay by sea via the Suez Canal. From Bombay, they take a train to Calcutta, but since things go wrong, they ultimately reach Calcutta on an elephant!

Now : You can easily take a flight from Cairo to Mumbai today. In Mumbai, you can spend the day exploring the city’s main attractions , sampling some vada pav by the beach and walking down the Marine Drive at night. In Calcutta (which you can reach by train, not elephant!), see the Victoria Memorial or grab a kathi roll at Park street .

Kolkata to Hong Kong and Yokohama

Then : Fogg, Passepartout and their new accomplice Aouda (whom they rescued from a sati in India) now proceed to Hong Kong by steamer and then onwards to Yokohama via Shanghai.

Now : In Hong Kong , go on a Harbour Night Cruise, sample the delicious Sampan style crab and experience the amazing nightlife ! From Hong Kong, you can head to Tokyo and soak up some Japanese culture .

around-the-world-in-80-days

Yokohama to San Francisco and New York

Then : Weary and cash-strapped by this time, our protagonists reach San Francisco by steamer. From there they take a transcontinental train to New York, braving herds of bison, an attack on their train and a failing suspension bridge.

Now : From Japan, catch a flight to San Fran to see the famous Golden Gate Bridge, explore Chintown and take some selfies at the bottom of Lombard Street. Then take a flight (no need for transcontinentals!) to the Big Apple. Stay for a few days in the ‘ best city in the world ’ to sample its unique food and culture and, of course, to give yourself a break from all the travelling!

New York to Liverpool

Then : Fogg and his team miss their ship to sail across the Atlantic back to England, and find a steamer to take them to Bordeaux, France, instead. On the way, Fogg incites a mutiny and the ship ultimately sails to Liverpool after braving strong winds. On their way, Fogg and co. disembark in Ireland and make their way from Dublin to Liverpool by train.

Now : Now that you’re on the home stretch, it’s only a hop, skip and a jump (by which we mean a flight) to Ireland. Gawk at the magnificence of the Cliffs of Moher , spend a day or two in Dublin to see the castles and have a pint of Guinness before heading to London.

around-the-world-in-80-days

Liverpool to London

Then : After a series of adventures, Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout finally arrive at London, but they’re five minutes later than their deadline. Or so they think! They have forgotten to take into account the time gap, and they realize that they have arrived 24 hours early! Fogg not only wins the bet, but also the love of Aouda to whom he’s eventually married.

Now : Now that you’ve completed the grand adventure, take a deep breath, relax and spend some time in London , seeing the historic city’s many attractions, sampling the fish and chips or heading out to one of the beaches nearb y, before finally flying back home.

There you have it! Fogg’s (and yours!) great adventure: around the world in 80 days!

Start in the quaint Baltic country of Estonia, then pick your way across Scandinavia taking in the Northern capitals of Finland, Sweden, Norway before crossing The Bridge to reach painfully cool Copenhagen. Carry on through to edgy Berlin and alternative Amsterdam, and take in the sophisticated cafe culture of Brussels and Paris before scooting down to Switzerland to catch some breathtaking alpine views. Tallinn (2 nights)

Ready to tackle the whole of Europe in 80 days!? Let’s go!

First stop – Tallinn!   Drink at numerous pubs with local Estonians

Ferry to Helsinki – 2 hours

Can You Follow The Itinerary Of Around The World in 80 Days?

BannerImg

“Around the World in 80 Days” is a classic adventure novel written by Jules Verne tells the story of Phileas Fogg (and his French valet Passepartout) who attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. The book which was published in 1873, and is a rip-roaring adventure set primarily in Victorian England. It highlights how technology was advancing rapidly during this period. Railway became a travelling standard which in turn increased global tourism. It inspired people to easily set a schedule, book tickets and travel around the world, which wasn’t common during the Victorian era.

In the story by Jules Verne, Fogg gets into an argument with his fellow members At the Reform Club over an article in  The Daily Telegraph . The article stated that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for £20,000 (which would be equal to about £1.5 million today) from his fellow club members, which he will receive if he makes it around the world in 80 days.

He left London with his French valet Passepartout and followed the route given as follows:

Map of the trip in Around the World in 80 Days

London, the UK to Suez, Egypt

The original itinerary of the book takes Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepartout from London to Suez (Cairo) by taking the Orient Express train. They travel across France and the Alps to reach Venice. Here, they move on to Brindisi (Italy) where they change to a steamer that brings them across the Mediterranean Sea. This takes 7 days.

Suez to Bombay, India

From Suez (Cairo) to Mumbai, Fogg and Passepartout disembark in a steamer across the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. During this journey, they are watched by a Scotland Yard detective, Inspector Fix. Because Fogg matches the description of a bank robber Fix is looking for, he mistakes Fogg for the criminal. Fogg promises the steamer engineer a large reward if he gets them to Bombay early. They dock two days ahead of schedule. This takes a total of 13 days.

Bombay to Calcutta, India

After reaching India, they take a train from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Calcutta (Kolkata) which takes 3 days. Here, Fogg learns that the  Daily Telegraph  article was wrong—the railroad ends at Kholby and starts again 50 miles further on at Allahabad.

In this journey, they meet a young Indian woman called Aouda, who is led to a sanctuary where she is to be sacrificed according to the rite of Sati (suicide on her husband’s funeral pyre) the next day. They rescue Aouda and bring her along on their journey. Even after this rescue operation, Fogg reaches Allahabad for the train ( Via elephant ride).

Obviously now, you don’t get to purchase and ride elephants for your personal transport like that.

Calcutta to Hong Kong and Hong Kong to Yokohama, Japan

For Kolkata to Hong Kong, the travellers catch a steamer going to Hong Kong across the South China Sea which takes 13 days.

Here Fix gets Fogg and Passepartout arrested. Although they jump bail, Fix follows them to Hong Kong. Since without a warrant, he decides that his last chance would be to arrest Fogg on British soil. Fix confides in Passepartout but to prevent Passepartout from informing his master about the premature departure of their next vessel, Fix gets Passepartout drunk and drugs him. Due to this, Passepartout neglects to inform Fogg about the early steamer but manages to catch it himself.

After missing his early ride, Fogg manages to find another steamer headed for Yokohama. Steamer across the China Sea and the Pacific Ocean takes the travellers from Hong Kong to Yokohama (Japan) in 6 days. They are united with Passepartout (who arrived early) in a circus, trying to earn the fare for his homeward journey.

Yokohama to San Francisco, United States

It takes another 22 days for Phileas and Passepartout to travel from Yokohama (Japan) to San Francisco (USA). They take a steamer across the Pacific Ocean for this journey. Fix promises Passepartout that now, he will no longer try to delay Fogg’s journey.

San Francisco to New York City, United States

In San Francisco, they board a transcontinental train to New York which takes another 7 days. During this journey, they encounter a number of obstacles such as a massive herd of bison crossing the tracks, a failing suspension bridge, the train being attacked by Sioux warriors, uncoupling the locomotive from the carriages and Passepartout being kidnapped by the Indians (but Fogg rescues him). They continue by a wind-powered sledge to Omaha, where they get a train to New York.

New York to London

From New York, he finds another steamer to cross the Atlantic Ocean but the steamboat was destined for Bordeaux, France and the captain refused to take them to Liverpool. Fogg manages to bribe the crew to change its course for Liverpool against the captain’s wishes. However,  when the ship runs into bad weather and runs out of coal, Fogg has to buy the ship from the captain. They burn the wooden parts of the ship as fuel, though it was only enough to get them as far as   Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland.

From here, they take an express mail train to Dublin followed by a fast boat to Liverpool. Sadly at Liverpool (as they have reached the British soil), he is arrested by Fix. The misunderstanding is cleared up (the actual robber was caught three days earlier in Edinburgh) and Fogg returns to London five minutes late, certain that he lost the bet. It takes them 9 days to reach London from New York.

But as the party travelled eastward and gained a day, the wager is won by Phileas Fogg!

In the 21st century, however, it seems pretty easy peasy with the round-the-world (RTW) tickets, doesn’t it? While this classic journey took 80 days, today the fastest route can be even less than 80 hours.

Yes, No Kidding! Now, your own “Around the world in 80 Days” depends on what you want to do. Do you want an active, adventure-focused experience? Or would you prefer seeing the magnificent landscapes? Above all, it is to be kept in mind that most RTW tickets involve flying in and out of major hubs which of course will increase the cost of the ticket considerably. So, pick a plan that not just suits your needs but is also easy on the pocket.

Keep the bubbling spirit of adventure alive and replicate the route from Around the World in 80 Days to be the ‘Phileas Fogg’ of the 21st century.

Princess is launching an all-inclusive, 4-month, around-the-world cruise for $20,000— see what it'll be like

  • Princess Cruises announced a 114-day  world cruise to 52 destinations in 2026, starting at $20,000 per person.
  • Guests who book early would get a free, all-inclusive package, a first for Princess' global itineraries.
  • Extended and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the vacation industry.

Insider Today

Princess Cruise's new around-the-world voyage will hit two vacation trends in one itinerary.

In January 2026, the company says its Coral Princess will embark on a 114-day cruise to 52 ports in 28 countries and six continents — more destinations than any of its previous global sailings .

It's the Carnival Corp brand's latest appeal to the extended cruising trend . But it's not the only fad this four-month vacation is targeting.

The sailing, which starts at $20,000 per person, also marks the first time Princess is offering a complimentary all-inclusive package as a way to entice early bookings.

Ultra-long and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the industry.

around the world in 80 days travel package

Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, and Oceania's 2024 around-the-world cruises all sold out before departing in January. The former was fully booked within three hours, while every cabin on the latter was called for in 30 minutes.

Besides being high-end, these three companies share one commonality: some level of all-inclusiveness , as is common with premium cruise lines.

Mass-market cruise companies rarely go the all-inclusive route.

around the world in 80 days travel package

Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian are generally beloved for their affordability.

But if you want to experience all their ships have to offer, be prepared to face a list of up-charged amenities like pay-to-play rides and specialty restaurants . After all, there's a reason their base fares are much cheaper than their increasingly popular ultra-luxury, all-inclusive counterparts.

But Princess has been increasingly vying for a slice of the luxury cruiser pie.

around the world in 80 days travel package

The cruise line says guests who book its 2026 world cruise early (that is, by the end of October) will receive its most inclusive Princess Premier package for free. The perk — launched two years ago — covers amenities that typically have a fee, like WiFi, premium drinks, some specialty restaurants, and workout classes.

Travelers who reserve one of the ship's high-end cabins by the same deadline would also receive complimentary airport transfers and airfare, services normally exclusively offered by luxury cruise lines .

The itinerary would have two roundtrip embarkation options: Fort. Lauderdale, Florida, on January 5, 2026, or Los Angeles 16 days later.

From there, the 2,000-guest Coral Princess would sail more than 35,000 nautical miles to ports in North America, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Central and South America.

It wouldn't be Princess' longest voyage — that title goes to its 116-day world cruise in 2025 — but it would be one of its most destination-heavy.

While two days longer, next year's around-the-world cruise would hit six fewer ports and four fewer countries than its 2026 counterpart.

According to the itinerary, about half of the 2026 voyage consists of sea days.

around the world in 80 days travel package

That's a lot of time on the water with no land in sight. Luckily, travelers can keep themselves entertained by attending lectures and programs related to the destinations, leisuring around the adult-only lounge, or taking a dip in Coral Princess' four pools.

The 21-year-old ship also has 10 places to grab a bite, although the Italian and steakhouse restaurants are considered specialty. Premier is the cruise line's most inclusive package, but it only includes 16 free dinners at these upcharge restaurants, paced once a week.

Princess is still a mass-market cruise line, after all.

The company has been increasingly dangling its inclusive package as a big perk.

around the world in 80 days travel package

The company says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US in October with its first-ever Sanctuary Collection . Travelers who splurge on these expensive and luxurious accommodations would be rewarded with two major benefits: a private lounge and Princess Premier.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Russian fighter-bomber 'shot down over Donetsk'; Ukraine faces another wave of Russian drones

A Russian Su-25 fighter-bomber jet has been shot down over the eastern region of Donetsk, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Elsewhere, Ukraine's air force said it downed 23 out of 24 Russian drones overnight.

We're pausing our live coverage of the war in Ukraine for the time being - thanks for tuning in.

This footage shows Russian troops preparing for a Victory Day parade in the Red Square in Moscow.

The event comes just days after Vladimir Putin's fifth inauguration as president of Russia.

By  Sean Bell , military analyst

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian Su-25 fighter-bomber jet over the Donetsk region yesterday.

The Russian fighter - codenamed Frogfoot by NATO - is primarily used to provide close air support for Russian frontline troops.

Pre-war the Russians had between 70 and 80 serviceable Su-25s, but Ukraine claims to have shot down around six of these to date.

But is this loss important in the broader scheme of the war?

Fresh Western supplies of weapons are starting to arrive in Ukraine, and the expectation is that air defence missiles would probably be the first priority.

Ukraine's claim that it has shot down 23 of 24 Russian drones last night and the successful targeting of one of its fighter jets also suggests that Ukraine is stabilising its defensive posture.

However, on the frontline, reports suggest that Russian forces have made further advances, taking several more communities - including Ocheretyne.

Military experts believe that Ukraine is making a "managed withdrawal" from key sites to trade territory for time - in anticipation of the arrival of fresh supplies of Western military aid.

Military offensives generally incur significantly greater losses for the attacking force than that defending.

The UK's Ministry of Defence has reported that Russia's April offensive action has resulted in 899 Russian casualties per day, which is higher than at the peak of the attritional battle for Bakhmut.

However, it has proven very difficult to secure reliable figures for the Ukraine war, with Russia playing down the scale of its losses, and Kyiv avoiding reporting specific numbers.

Regardless, it seems likely that Vladimir Putin will be keen to avoid another round of Russian mobilisation for fear of highlighting the growing numbers of Russian casualties.

Instead,  Russia is reported to be recruiting foreign nationals to bolster its army, with the latest target being Cuba.

It is reported that Cuban recruits have been offered monthly salaries of up to £1600 per month, when their average salary in Cuba is around £20 per month.

The package naturally appears attractive, particularly if recruits are initially told that they will not serve on the frontline.

Until the resupply of Western weapons and ammunition arrives, it looks likely that Russia will continue to capitalise on Ukraine's shortage of weapons to push forward and secure as much territory as possible in the Donbas.

And Ukraine will seek to ensure Russia pays a high price for every metre of ground ceded.

These images show members of the 93rd Kholodnyi war separate mechanised brigade celebrating Orthodox Easter on the frontlines of Russia's war against Ukraine.

The Ukrainian troops are fighting in Donetsk, where much of Russia's military focus is.

This footage shows firefighters battling a blaze in Kharkiv in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The region was consistently targeted yesterday, with several drone and shelling attacks across the area.

Russia's targeting of Ukrainian energy infrastructure with drones and missiles has cost Kyiv some £1bn (£796m), the country's energy minister has claimed.

German Galushchenko said that, since mid-March, Russian forces have been attacking Ukrainian thermal and hydropower stations - as well as main networks - on an almost daily basis.

This has led to blackouts in many regions.

"Today, we are talking about the amounts of losses for more than a billion dollars," he said.

"But the attacks continue, and it is obvious that the losses will grow," he added.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted nine major sanctions on North Korea in response to the country's nuclear and missile activities since 2006.

In June of that year, the UNSC established an embargo on exports of major arms to and imports from North Korea.

In June 2009, it widened the embargo to all arms, except for the export small arms and light weapons to the country, before eventually banning those too in 2015.

Russia was a signatory to those embargoes.

Yet, late last year, a series of Russian senior leadership visits to North Korea were focused on solving Russia's growing demand for weapons, artillery shells and missiles to support its war in Ukraine.

Although Russia has denied that it imports North Korean weapons, the Royal United Service Institute (RUSI) has been tracking ships transporting weapons to Russia.

It has tracked four Russian cargo ships, each transporting hundreds of containers.

Estimates suggest that over 7,000 containers carrying over one million ammunition shells, rockets and missiles have been sold to Russia by North Korea since a deal was struck last year.

Russia denies that it is importing any North Korean weapons.

However, an inspector from the Conflict Arms Research team based in Ukraine has been studying the remains of a series of missiles fired at Ukrainian targets this year and has made a series of important discoveries.

According to reports, parts of the missile remains included characters only used in the Korean alphabet, and the number '112' was stamped into parts of the missile - '2023' in the Korean calendar.

Closer investigation of hundreds of electronic components revealed that the missiles were "bursting" with Western technology.

Most of the electronics were manufactured in the US or Europe, and were sourced over the past few years.

Despite supposedly significant sanctions, North Korea has managed to illicitly procure large quantities of Western technology, assemble missiles and sell them to Russia to be used in its war in Ukraine.

Although the North Korean weapons might not be very effective, they are cheap, so can be procured in large quantities and used to degrade Ukrainian air defence systems.

Quantity has a quality all of its own - so what is the point of sanctions if they can so easily be bypassed?

North Korea is evidently profiting from its arms export arrangement with Russia, which will create further opportunities for Pyongyang to expand arms exports as a vital source of revenue - to grow its economy and military capability.

Not to mention it undermines the authority of the UN - given that Russia is a signatory to the ban on North Korean arms exports, yet is flagrantly ignoring this ban to meet its wartime needs.

Yet, the UN appears powerless to enforce its own sanctions.

Russia claims it has taken complete control of the village of Ocheretyne in eastern Ukraine.

The village, which lies northwest of the former Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka, which Russia captured in February, had a pre-war population of around 3,000.

Russia has made steady advances since taking Avdiivka, and this would mark the latest in a string of villages in the area to fall into Moscow's grasp.

These images show Russian servicemen and women preparing for the annual Victory Day parade in Moscow.

On the 9 May, the military will march through the Red Square in front of Vladimir Putin - who will have been sworn in once again as president days earlier (see 9.04am post).

The parade will showcase Russian military hardware with vehicles, aircraft and soldiers all taking the stage.

Russian forces are continuing to advance west of Avdiivka, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The US-based thinktank said it had geolocated footage showing Russian soldiers advancing near Arkhanhelske, which is just northwest of the Russian-held city.

Fighting has intensified in villages like Arkhanhelske near Avdiivka, and further north around Chasiv Yar in recent weeks.

"ISW assesses that the Russian seizure of Arkhanhelske also indicates that Russian forces likely control Keramik and Novokalynove (both southeast of Arkhanhelske)," it said.

It also said it had noted Ukrainian forces withdrawing from northern Arkhanhelske.

"Ukrainian forces may have decided to trade space for time as they wait for the arrival of US aid to the frontline at scale in the coming weeks - an appropriate decision for an under-resourced force at risk of being outflanked," it said.

"Russian forces appear to be choosing to exploit the tactical situation northwest of Avdiivka - a sound military undertaking - but their ultimate objective in this frontline sector remains unclear."

Here's the latest battlefield situation on the ground...
