Dua'a for travelling

Table of Contents

The muslim traveler's guide to packing for a trip.

Traveling can be one of the most exhilarating and liberating experiences in life. You get to explore new places, have unique experiences, and make lasting memories with friends and family. But to any Muslim traveler, there is an additional layer of spiritual appreciation around it; something that turns a regular vacation into somewhat of a pilgrimage — the power of prayer! It’s believed by many people across the world that reciting certain supplications (known as Duas) for traveling helps bring protection and peace on your journey. Here we will look at some of these traveling prayers for Muslims, what they mean in Arabic, how you can use them when traveling, and other useful tips to help you stay safe wherever you go.

The importance of Dua for traveling

Duas (or supplications) are a powerful form of spiritual communication, as they allow us to communicate directly with Allah and ask for His protection, guidance, and grace. When it comes to traveling in particular, there are tons of authentic narrations from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), that teaches the importance of saying certain Duas whenever someone embarks on a journey. The most famous Dua for travel is known as “Dua al-Safar” or “The Traveler’s Prayer”.

This special prayer will not only help bring you safety during your trip but will also provide you an extra shield of mental peace while you travel and explore new places. It can be recited anytime during your journey, before setting out or even when you arrive to your destination.

Travel essentials for Muslim travelers

Apart from the spiritual tools of prayer, there are also some key material items that all Muslim travelers should bring with them on their journeys. These include:

– A Quran and/or an Islamic book ; this is particularly important if traveling abroad and encountering a new culture.

-Headscarves and long clothes such as abayas or hijab(s) can be useful for those observing traditional modesty.

– Islamic books or audio lectures that contain Islamic knowledge relevant to the situation, such as understanding cultural norms in other countries or how to deal with a difficult travel experience.

– An Islamic compass that can help with finding the direction of qibla (the direction to face when praying) no matter where you are.

– Miswak – a natural toothbrush found in some Islamic countries, it is considered Sunnah (recommended practice) to use it while traveling.

– Prayer beads or tasbihs – these are particularly useful for dhikr and reciting Duas throughout your journey.

These items will not only provide spiritual support during your travels but also provide practical guidance on how to observe Islamic etiquette both at home and abroad.

What to say in a dua for traveling

سبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ. Quran Verse Travel Duaa
Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun. Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return. Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14 Travel Duaa

How to say a Dua for travelling

When reciting Duas for travel, there are some tips to keep in mind:

-Start by making a sincere intention of your journey and its purpose.

-Recite the Dua calmly and with humility, remembering that Allah is All-Knowing and always listening.

-Look for times when you may be feeling especially vulnerable or anxious while traveling, such as during long flights or in unfamiliar places, and recite the Dua at those moments.

-Remember to ask Allah for His guidance throughout the journey, asking Him to help you stay on track spiritually.

-If possible, try to read Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) before embarking on any journey. This is a powerful Dua that promises protection, safety, and success during the journey.

-Always be mindful of Allah’s presence in your travels, regardless of where you are or what challenges come your way.

The best time to recite a dua for traveling

The best time to recite a Dua for travel is just before setting out on the journey. This will ensure that you begin your travels with blessings and protection from Allah, as well as help focus your thoughts and intentions so that they remain in line with His guidance throughout the journey. Additionally, it is a good idea to recite any special Duas or prayers you may have learned while traveling, such as “l-Safar” or “The Traveler’s Prayer”. This special prayer will not only help bring you safety during your trip, but will also provide you an extra shield of mental peace while you travel and explore new places. It can be recited anytime during your journey, before setting out, or before going to sleep.

The blessings of making a dua for traveling

Making a Dua for travel is an excellent way to ensure that your travels are blessed and protected. By asking Allah for His guidance, mercy, and protection, we can rest assured that He will provide us with the strength and courage to persevere throughout our journey. Additionally, it is important to remember that Allah knows best what is best for us in all circumstances – so reciting a dua for travel reminds us of this and helps keep our intentions focused on Him. Ultimately, making a Dua for travel can help increase our faith in Allah as well as bring peace of mind knowing that He always has our back.

What to do if your journey is interrupted

If your journey is interrupted or delayed due to any unforeseen circumstances, it is important to stay patient and remember that Allah has a plan for you. During these times, it is beneficial to recite the Dua for travel again, as well as make supplications asking Him for guidance and ease in the situation. Additionally, you can also seek refuge with Him by reading Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) and other prayers of protection. Finally, try to maintain a positive attitude during these difficult periods – knowing that Allah will provide you with what’s best in His perfect timing.

Some advice on staying safe while traveling, especially if you're a woman

If you are a woman traveling alone, it is important to take extra precautions to ensure your safety and security. Here are some tips to help you stay safe on your travels:

-Always trust your instincts. When in doubt, get out!

-Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Stay in well-lit areas and avoid dark alleys or deserted streets.

-Keep an eye out for suspicious people or activities. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you feel uncomfortable.

-Stay up to date with local news and events so that you can be prepared in case of any unexpected changes in the environment or any potential threats.

-Inform your friends and family about where you are going and when you expect to return.

-Always carry a cell phone with you so that you can call for help in an emergency.

-Finally, make sure to recite the Dua for travel often – asking Allah to grant you safety and protection throughout your journey.

By following these simple tips and relying on Allah’s guidance and protection, you can have peace of mind knowing that no matter what challenges come your way, He will always be by your side!

May Allah grant us all safe travels! Ameen.

Tips on how to make the most of your travels, insha'Allah

The best way to make the most of your travels is to stay focused on Allah and have a positive attitude. Here are some tips on how to do just that:

-Take time out each day for prayer and reflection – this will help keep you connected to Allah throughout your journey.

-Express gratitude for all the blessings you receive during your trip.

-Make note of any meaningful moments, experiences, or feelings in order to remember them later when reflecting back on the trip.

-Be mindful of local customs and traditions in order to respect cultural differences.

-Keep an open mind and heart – it’s amazing what you can learn from other cultures and people!

-Seek knowledge in whatever way that resonates with you – whether it’s through reading books, watching videos, or simply conversing with locals.

-Lastly, remember to recite the Dua for travel often as this will help keep your heart and mind focused on Allah.

By implementing these tips and striving to stay mindful of Allah during our travels, we can truly make the most out of our journeys, insha’Allah!

May Allah bless us all with safe and meaningful travels! Ameen.

Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

Posted by Ahmed Abdulla | Duas

Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

What does Safar mean?

Safar  (سفر) is an Arabic term which refers to travelling, going on a journey, or transportation. It is also the second Islamic month of the lunar calendar and the month where Muslims used to vacate their homes to gather food.

According to hadith and the sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) there are a number of duas one can recite for safar / travelling / going on a journey and we will cover them all in this one article.  Theses can be used for any method of transport whether by airplane, car, or boat.

Supplication For Travelling

Safar ki dua

In short, this hadith teaches to say the following:

  • (Bismillah) [three times]
  • Alhamdulillah
  • Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun (Also referenced in  Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14)
  • Alhamdulillah and Allahuakbar [three times]
  • Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant

The Full hadith is given below from Jami At-Tirmidhi, Vol. 6, Book of Supplications, Hadith 3446 Ali bin Rabi’ah said:

“I witnessed Ali having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said: ‘In the Name of Allah,’ (Bismillah) [three times]. So then, once he had ascended upon its back, he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ (Al-Hamdulillah) then he said: Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it. And, surely, to our Lord are we returning (Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun). Then he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah (Al-Hamdulillah)’ – three times – and ‘Allah is the Greatest (Allahu Akbar)’ – three times – ‘Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You (Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant).’ Then he laughed. So I said: ‘O Commander of the Believer! What caused you to laugh?’ He said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah do as I did, then he ﷺ laughed, so I said, ‘What cause you to laugh?’ He said: ‘Indeed, your Lord if very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my Lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than You forgives sins.”

Invocation For Traveler

Transliteration: Bismiallahi wa alhamdu liallahi. Subhanaalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun.

Translation: In the name of Allah, and Praise be to Allah. Glory be to the one who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord we will surely return.

Dua Upon Reaching Destination

Transliteration: Allhum rab alsamawat alsbʿ wama aẓlun wa-rab alarḍyn alsbʿ wama aqlun warab alshayaṭyn wama aḍlun warab alryaḥ wama duhryn finna nasalak khayr hudh alqarya wkhyr ahlha wanʿwdh baka mn shrha washr ahlha washr ma fyha.

Translation: “O Allah, You are the Lord of the seven skies and all the things that are under these skies and the seven planets and whatever is over these and of Satan who misled and all those misled by him and for the wind and all that it blows. Thus we seek the good of this town and the good of its members (people) and seek refuge from its evil and the evil of its members and from the evils of whatever is in it”. (Hisnul Hasin from Ibn Habban)

Another Dua:

أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق

A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa

Khaulah bint Hakim (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “Whosoever alights somewhere and says: ‘A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa (I seek refuge with the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created),’ nothing will harm him until he leaves that place.” [Muslim] Riyad As Salihin. Arabic/English book reference : Book 8, Hadith 982

Other Hadiths About Safar and Safe Journey

The duas for safar covered this far are the most well known or common duas for journey. The rest of the article will focus on advice from Prophet Muhammad ( ﷺ ) regarding a safe travel and other Islamic traditions.

It’s Better To Travel With Others:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.”. In another narration, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group.” 1

This was more applicable and good advice back during the Prophet’s time as travelling was far more treacherous at night especially if going alone. Today travelling at night is safer but you will not be as alert as you would when you first wake. Going on safar with group you’ll be less likely to make mistakes or be taken advantage of.

When Ascending To Heights (Going on Plane)

Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) and his army ascended a height, they would proclaim: “Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest),” and when they climbed down, they would proclaim: “Subhan Allah (Allah is free from imperfection).” 2

Shortened Prayer While Vacationing:

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) once stayed for nineteen days and prayed shortened prayers. So when we travel led (and stayed) for nineteen days, we used to shorten the prayer but if we traveled (and stayed) for a longer period we used to offer the full prayer. 3

I’ve Worked in Safari Travel for More Than 20 Years — These Are the 4 National Parks in Tanzania I Send Travelers To

A-List travel advisor Samantha Gordon recommends where to stay and what to expect.

For many first-timers to Tanzania, the game-filled plains of the Serengeti ecosystem and the sheer wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater are undoubtedly must-see destinations. But while these northern parks attract the most attention, travelers in the know are heading off the beaten track — to the remote corners of southern and western Tanzania. This is where you’ll find the country's two largest parks (Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park), as well as the rarely visited Katavi National Park and the stunning Mahale Mountains National Park, which is home to an extraordinary troop of chimpanzees and only accessible by boat.

As a safari expert, I'm sharing my recommendations for each of these secluded, wild places. Here's an overview of Tanzania's best under-the-radar national parks.

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is a 11,583-square-mile landmass in the larger Selous Game Reserve, affording a high degree of protection for its prodigious wildlife population. Only a handful of lodges exist here (for the time being), so game drives are blissfully peaceful. For those keen to get out of a 4WD vehicle, afternoons can be spent boating and fishing on the Rufiji River, observing birds and hippos, or taking a nature walk with a qualified safari guide. My favorite place to stay is  Sand Rivers camp, with its private rooms perched on the high banks overlooking the Rufiji. For a proper safari adventure , you can also spend the night in Sand Rivers' gorgeous fly camp and eat dinner next to a campfire before retiring to your simple tent under a blanket of stars.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is possibly Tanzania’s best kept secret. Covering an area larger than Maryland, it's home to just 10 lodges — and a tenth of the world’s lion population, plus a whopping 450 different bird species. The best way to experience its sheer beauty, size, and emptiness is via a hot-air balloon ride. You have to wake up at dawn, yes, but then you're rewarded with a stunning sunrise followed by a calm flight over the pristine landscape, without a vehicle in sight. I recommend returning to the luxurious surroundings of  Jabali Ridge  camp to relax by the pool before your afternoon game drive.

Katavi National Park

Due to rains and flooding, this remote park is accessible only five months of the year — and that means everything feels just a little bit wilder. Located in Tanzania's far west, Katavi National Park is much less visited than other national parks in the country. The local wildlife includes large herds of buffalos, zebras, giraffes, and elephants, and there are plenty of hippos and crocodiles. Predators such as cheetahs, leopards, lions, and hyenas can be found here, too, but don’t expect lots of cat sightings. The real draw of Katavi is its remoteness — there are so few other visitors that you'll feel like you have the park to yourself.

Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale, the most beautiful of Tanzania’s national parks, lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika (the second-largest lake in the world by depth and volume, after Lake Baikal in Russia). The lush rain forest that rises steeply from the water’s edge is one of only two protected areas for chimpanzees in the country (the other is the nearby Gombe Stream National Park, made famous by Jane Goodall ), plus it's home to the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees in the world. There are no roads or infrastructure within the park boundary, so the only access is by boat. The trekking can be tough (straight up and hot!), but is incredibly rewarding. I never thought I would match the experience of tracking gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda, but spending time in Mahale with chimpanzees came extremely close. I experienced the best guiding I have had in more than 20 years of African explorations. The head guide, Butati (pronounced to rhyme with Bugatti), was born in this park. He knows not only the names of all the 70-something chimps, but also their relationships, families, and characters quirks.

What's a day like at Mahale? Guests have an early breakfast and then get ready to trek, awaiting the radio call of rangers who alert the camp of the day’s first sighting. Then, they head straight out on foot in search of chimps. After the morning’s exertions (and, ideally, incredible wildlife sightings), there's nothing more inviting than a boat trip out onto Lake Tanganyika — I recommend diving into the crystal-clear waters as the best way to cool off.

Salah During Travel (Qasr)

Praying 5 times a day is an obligation upon Muslims. However, Allah has allowed His servants to shorten their Salah during travel.

1- Why Should We Follow Qasr Salah During Travel?

The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said,

“Verily, Allah loves for you to take His concessions , just as he dislikes you to be disobedient.” (Musnad Ahmad: 5832)

The shortening of prayers is mentioned in the Quran and is a confirmed Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.):

“And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for the shortening Prayer” (Quran 4:101, An-Nasai: 457)

Hence, for travelers, it is permissible to shorten those Prayers that consist of 4 Rakat to only 2 Rakat (i.e. only Fardh Prayer of Dhuhr, Asr & Isha Salah).

2- Opinion of Different Fiqh:

According to Imam Shafii (R.A.) and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (R.A.), Reduction in the Prayer is not obligatory but merely optional. However, it is better to shorten it.

Imam Abu Hanifah (R.A.) considers ‘Reduction in Prayer'’ as obligatory (Wajib) during travel .

3- Conditions for Qasr:

Travelling Distance

According to Imam Abu Hanifa, the minimum required distance for a person to be considered a traveler is when he or she intends to travel for 48 miles (80 kilometers approx) from his/her Waṭan-e-Aṣli (Original Hometown).

Imam Shafi'i, Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal and Imam Malik fixed this distance at 55 miles approx (88 km approx).

Shortening of the prayers commences once a person leaves the city limits and ceases when they re-enter the city limits.

Period/Time

There is considerable scholarly disagreement on this matter from three days to four and to fifteen days.

Traveler-status is the intention to stay at the place of arrival for a period of:

Less than Fifteen (15) days [Hanafi]

Less than Four (4) days [Hanbali, Maliki and Shafii] - (Days of arrival and departure are not included)

4- How to do Taqseer (shortening of Prayers):

During travel, only Salah with 4 Rakat Fardh is to be shortened, i.e. Dhuhr, Asr & Isha. Travelers should offer 2 Rakat instead of 4 Rakat of the mentioned Salahs.

However, 2 Rakat Fardh of Fajr and 3 Rakat of Maghrib Salah must be offered in full as you cannot cut 2 or 3 Rakat Fardh Salah in half.

When on a journey, the Prophet (S.A.W.) used to offer, without fail, 2 Sunnah Rakat of Fajr Prayer and 3 Rakat Witr with Isha Prayer . So these two should be offered even during traveling.

Remember that these rules are only for a person who is traveling and offering individual Salah. If the traveler is praying in congregation then he must follow the Imam and offer the full Salah.

The Quran, written centuries ago, contains profound hints at future discoveries. It includes scientific facts that surpass the knowledge of anyone who lived in the 7th century. This serves as compelling evidence of the divine nature of the Quran.

This year, Nisf Shaban (Shab-e-Barat) will start after the sunset of Tuesday, March 7th, 2023.

Isra wal Meraj is a journey of faith and revelation that the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) took from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the 7th Heaven.

Isra and Miraj (The Night Journey) is miraculous journey that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) took in one night from Makkah to Bait al-Maqdas and then an ascension to the heavens.

U.S. Department of the Treasury

U.s. department of the treasury, irs release guidance to drive american innovation, cut aviation sector emissions.

Biden-Harris Administration Partners Announce Updated GREET Model to Measure Lifecycle Emissions from Sustainable Aviation Fuels

WASHINGTON – Today the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released guidance on the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Credit established by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to create good-paying jobs and reduce climate pollution by spurring innovation in the aviation industry.

The Treasury Department worked closely with Biden-Harris Administration partners, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Department of Energy (DOE) on today’s Notice.

“President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is driving American innovation to create good-paying jobs and help the U.S. clear hurdles in our clean energy transition,” said U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen. “Incentives in the law are helping to scale production of low-carbon fuels and cut emissions from the aviation sector, one of the most difficult-to-transition sectors of our economy. Today’s guidance provides additional clarity and certainty to companies and producers.”

“Sustainable aviation fuel is a key part of the Biden-Harris Administration's efforts to transition the American economy to a clean energy future and rebuild the middle class from the bottom up to the middle out in rural America,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack . “Today’s announcement is an important stepping stone as it acknowledges the important role farmers can play in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and begins to reward them through that contribution in the production of new fuels. This is a great beginning as we develop new markets for sustainable aviation fuel that use home grown agricultural crops produced using climate smart agricultural practices. USDA will continue to work with our federal agency partners to expand opportunities in the future for climate smart agriculture in producing sustainable aviation fuel.”

“The guidance released today reflects the latest data and science needed to help create new economic opportunities for America's agricultural sector,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm . “This interagency effort will help our climate goals take flight with cheaper, cleaner sustainable aviation fuel -- ensuring America maintains an innovative edge on the global clean technology stage.”

“Innovation in the aviation sector has brought our country and our world together and now, it’s fueling the solution to meet our ambitious net-zero carbon emission goals,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg . “Today’s announcement will strengthen America’s position as a leader in the production of sustainable aviation fuels, help cut carbon emissions, and create a better future for all Americans.”

“The Inflation Reduction Act’s tax credit for sustainable aviation fuels is a critical tool for decarbonizing air travel,” said John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy.  “Today’s announcement of an updated GREET model and Treasury guidance is a big step forward for American farmers, for American innovation, for American jobs, and for America’s ability to cut carbon pollution from our transportation sector and protect our planet.”

The Treasury Department’s guidance provides important clarity around eligibility for the SAF Credit. The credit incentivizes the production of SAF that achieves a lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reduction of at least 50% as compared with petroleum-based jet fuel. Producers of SAF are eligible for a tax credit of $1.25 to $1.75 per gallon. SAF that achieves a GHG emissions reduction of 50% is eligible for the $1.25 credit per gallon amount, and SAF that achieves a GHG emissions reduction of more than 50% is eligible for an additional $0.01 per gallon for each percentage point the reduction exceeds 50%, up to $0.50 per gallon.

As part of today’s guidance, the agencies comprising the SAF Interagency Working Group (IWG) are jointly announcing the 40B SAF-GREET 2024 model. This model provides another methodology for SAF producers to determine the lifecycle GHG emissions rates of their production for the purposes of the SAF Credit.

The modified version of GREET incorporates new data, including updated modeling of key feedstocks and processes used in aviation fuel and indirect emissions. The modified GREET model also integrates key greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies such as carbon capture and storage, renewable natural gas, and renewable electricity.

The Notice released today also, on a pilot basis, incorporates a USDA pilot program to encourage the use of certain Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices for SAF feedstocks. Incorporating CSA practices into the production of SAF provides multiple benefits, including lower overall GHG emissions associated with SAF production and increased adoption of farming practices that are associated with other environmental benefits, such as improved water quality and soil health.

For corn ethanol-to-jet, the pilot provides a greenhouse gas reduction credit if a “bundle” of certain CSA practices (no-till, cover crop, and enhanced efficiency fertilizer) are used. It similarly would allow a greenhouse gas reduction credit for soybean-to-jet if the soybean feedstock is produced using a “bundle” of applicable CSA practices (no-till and cover crop). This is a pilot program specific to the 40B credit, which is in effect for 2023 and 2024.

To credit CSA practices in the Clean Fuel Production Credit (45Z), which becomes available in 2025, the agencies will do further work on modeling, data, and assumptions, as well as verification. A new 45Z-GREET will be developed for use with the 45Z tax credit.
