Top Asia FAQs
When’s the best time to cruise to Asia?
We offer a wide variety of Asia itineraries with our revolutionized Celebrity Solstice ship sailing during the winter and Celebrity Millenium year round. Each region of Asia offers different experiences guests can enjoy.
The winter months, from November to February, are the ideal time to explore South Asia, including India and Sri Lanka, when the climate is less humid, giving you more energy for sightseeing.
Countries like South Korea and Japan are delightful all through the summer months and have perfect weather to lounge by their spectacular beaches.
The Lunar New Year usually falls in February, and this is a fantastic time to be in Asia, with widespread celebrations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
Is a cruise a good way to see Asia?
A cruise is the perfect way to see Asia. You’re able to visit multiple places in comfort, with no effort required on your part to get from one to the other. A Celebrity Asian cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting destinations in the world, from Japan and Hong Kong, to the island paradise of Bali. As an example, in the space of just 12 nights, you could visit exciting cities like Singapore, to off-the-beaten path destinations in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
A 12-night Japan itinerary takes you to six contrasting destinations in Japan itself, as well as Busan in South Korea. You could also choose a 14-night itinerary from Singapore to Mumbai, which follows the coast of Malaysia, crosses the Indian Ocean, and then explores Sri Lanka and three ports in India.
Many of our itineraries include overnight stops in destinations including Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket and more, giving you time to experience local night markets and restaurants.
Where do Asia cruises depart from?
Celebrity offers a wide choice of cruises in Asia. Departure ports include Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, and Tokyo.
Do I need visas to visit each country?
It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .
The majority of Asian nations do not require a visa for entry, but some do. To visit India, for example, you will need to get a visa before you leave home.
What are the main ports of call on an Asian cruise?
Any cruise to Asia is packed with exciting ports, from vibrant cities to blissful beach locations on islands including Langkawi, Ko Samui, and Phuket.
To many, the real marquee ports are the cities like Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai, Tokyo, and Ho Chi Minh City. But often, it’s the places in between that leave just as great an impression, whether you’re exploring an exquisite temple in Kyoto or cruising the serene backwaters of Cochin on a rice barge.
What’s best about an Asia cruise with Celebrity is that our ships stay overnight in many ports, so you can really get to know a destination. In Hanoi, for example, you can enjoy the buzz of the city and spend a day sailing beautiful Halong Bay. In Bangkok, there’s time to see the shimmering Grand Palace as well as take a river cruise and browse colorful floating markets.
Are there any vaccination or health requirements?
There are no compulsory vaccinations to visit Asian countries, but it is recommended to be up to date with all your regular inoculations, including tetanus and hepatitis A. It’s important to consult your physician in advance to plan a vaccination schedule.
Celebrity’s Asian itineraries do not visit ports where malaria is known to be a high risk, so it is unlikely that you will need anti-malarial drugs—but again, check with your physician or travel health clinic in advance as everybody’s situation is different.
How do I handle currency exchange for the different countries visited?
Most places in Southeast Asia and Japan take credit cards, but you will need a small amount of local currency to shop in markets or buy souvenirs from vendors. For India, rural areas still have a cash economy, so you will need some rupees outside of the main urban areas.
While enthusiastic souvenir vendors may offer to take U.S. dollars, you will not get a good exchange rate, and you will be given change in local currency. If you choose to pay this way, make sure you know the exchange rate and what denominations local notes come in.
If you use an ATM on your travels, it’s safer to use one that’s attached to a reputable bank.
What languages are commonly spoken, and will I need a translator or phrasebook?
Dozens of different languages are spoken across Asia; India alone has 22 official languages. While it’s polite to offer a greeting in the local language, and helpful to know a few phrases, it’s not necessary to be fluent.
You will not need a translator on your travels in Asia. All guides on shore excursions speak English. A lot of signage is in English as well as the local language, especially in tourist areas. In many countries, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and India, English is an official language, and in many others, it is taught in school as a second language.
What cultural and historical sites can I expect to see on excursions?
Our wide range of excursions takes you to all the main cultural sites in the ports we visit. You can explore historic George Town from Penang, and take in the buzz and bustle of Hong Kong’s various night markets on an after-dark tour.
See the temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and visit the poignant Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima. Learn about Buddhism with a monk in Colombo, and explore the dazzling imperial city of Hue from Chan May, Vietnam.
Are there specific cultural norms or etiquette I should be aware of?
It’s a good idea to take a little time to understand the culture of the Asian countries you are visiting. Generally speaking, extreme politeness is important, as is taking the time to greet people, and remaining softly spoken.
Many Asian countries are Buddhist, in which case, always show respect to Buddha statues and temples and do not touch Buddhist monks. Do not point at people and do not be surprised if a local avoids eye contact during a conversation; this is a sign of respect. In Thailand, it is an offense to say anything negative about the royal family.
Try to understand the sense of “face” that is prevalent in Asian countries. Saving face is important; so, for example, a person may tell you what they think you want to hear rather than the reality, to avoid losing face. Shouting at someone causes you to lose face.
Japan in particular is a country with a complex social etiquette. Just a few include not tipping (it’s just not done here); never blowing your nose in public; taking off your shoes before entering a temple; and not blocking busy sidewalks in the densely populated cities.
If you’re visiting somewhere on a tour where specific etiquette is expected, your guide will point out all you need to know.

Asia Cruisetours
If you really want to explore the Far East, there’s no better vacation option than an Asia cruisetour. The countries of Asia are so vast and varied that it’s nearly impossible to really understand the region without fully immersing yourself in the culture and landscape. The most comprehensive and affordable way to do this is by bundling a pre- or post-cruise land tour with your Asia cruise vacation. The resulting package, called a cruisetour, will provide additional time for seeing more of Asia’s gems, including the Great Wall of China, Xian’s Terracotta Army, Beijing’s Summer Palace and more. There’s never been a better time to uncover the treasures of Asia with a cruisetour through the Far East.
Things to Do on a Cruisetour to Asia
Adding extra land days to your Asia cruise means more time to explore the Terracotta Army in Xian or walk the Great Wall of China. It could also mean additional time to marvel at the Summer Palace or Forbidden City of Beijing, China. No matter what you want to see and do in the Far East, an Asia cruisetour gives you more opportunities to see and do it. Listed below are a few of the best ways to spend your time when enjoying an Asia cruisetour vacation:
- Spend a full day touring the best sites in Beijing, China. You can see the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Temple of Heaven – a towering cylindrical temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site. After touring and working up an appetite, do as the locals do and find a place to enjoy the city’s most famous dish, Peking duck.
- If your cruisetour takes you to Japan, be sure to visit Kyoto’s Nijo Castle complex. You can tour its two palaces and surrounding gardens before visiting more of the area’s stunning sites, including the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji Temple), the stunning scarlet Heian Shrine and the ancient Kiyomizu Buddhist Temple.
- Tour Beijing’s elaborate Summer Palace, which includes several gardens and palaces along the shores of Kunming Lake. Stretch your legs while wandering through the largest imperial garden in the world, and then relax on a serene boat ride upon Kunming Lake.
- Explore the Great Wall of China, located just north of Beijing. The Great Wall extends nearly 4,000 miles across China’s rugged terrain, and you’ll have an opportunity to walk upon its ancient pathways while learning the history behind its many branches and sections.
- Marvel at one of the most fascinating armies in the world, Xian’s Terracotta Warriors. The vault of over 8,000 life-sized terracotta figures includes armored foot soldiers, horses and chariots. The Terracotta Army was constructed more than 2,000 years ago to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife.
- Enjoy a river cruising excursion along the Yangtze River with a stop at the Shibaozhai Temple, a series of red pavilions built amongst the rocky cliffs bordering the river. You’ll also have a chance to travel through the Three Gorges locks and tour the Three Gorges Dam.

Hanoi - Sapa Highlight Package Tour in 7 Days
Well I have to say that I'm always a little nervous about booking a trip online but everything worked out perfect. We were picked up at our hotel promptly and they arrived with a large caravan to take us to Sapa. The ride was conformable and in the heat the air conditioner was very powerful. The drivers throughout the trip were friendly and handled the van safely. An excellent hotel! Great breakfast, pool, bar and the staff was of the highest caliber. Our guide , Mr Kong and our driver in Vietnam were the best. Mr khonhn was well informed about all aspects of the temples and our driver Somah was a very good driver. They both spoke english well and helped make our trip a lot of fun. You won't be disappointed with this company.

Dr. Paulo Benito Tugbang, Director IV for Product and Market Development at the Philippine Department of Tourism, said, “We are dedicated to further developing the industry to attract more cruises to the Philippines, with ongoing product enhancement programs for emerging and existing destinations, development of dedicated cruise ports and terminals, and championing favourable cruise-friendly sector-wide policies to support the cruise industry.”
Xiamen Set to Launch New Smart Cruise Terminal
Hailed as the “Garden on the Sea,” Xiamen is a well-connected air and sea port and ranks as one of China’s four major international shipping centers. The Xiamen International Cruise Terminal 2, set to be operational by September of this year, features smart construction and security screening systems, providing cruise passengers with a stunning experience and convenient clearance.
The terminal is seamlessly connected to a three-floor exhibition hall and Xiamen Sea World, a trendy amusement hub that offers upscale dining options and culturally rich art and entertainment experiences.
Mr. Zhong Hailin, Deputy Director of Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, said, “Xiamen is strategically located in the core area of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and serves as a pivotal hub city for the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. It boasts breathtaking natural landscapes and an abundance of cultural heritage. Our imposing cruise terminal, along with the Xiamen Airport operating diverse domestic, international, and regional routes, can amply support the development of flexible fly-cruise programs covering domestic and regional destinations.”
The four promising cruise destinations in Asia with their purpose-built cruise infrastructure, exotic cultural appeal, diverse attractions, and welcoming policy support for cruising, offer tremendous potential for global cruise operators seeking new horizons of growth.

Marella Cruises has cancelled its 2024-25 Asia and Middle East programme due to ongoing conflict in the Red Sea.
The line said it was a “difficult decision” to cancel the sailings scheduled to depart between November 1 and April 30, 2025, but it has done so “for the safety of our customers and crew”.
Affected passengers will be given the option of either a full refund or rebooking with a £200 discount.
The line has not yet confirmed new deployment plans.
A spokesperson said: “We appreciate how disappointing this news will be and, therefore, all impacted customers will be contacted by their booking agent to discuss the options available to them.
“Options include being able to rebook with a £200 per person reduction or receive a full refund.
“Once again we apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience caused to impacted customers and we hope to see them on board a Marella Cruise very soon.”

Norwegian Cruise Line Cancels Over a Dozen Voyages in 2025 — What to Know
Guests impacted by the cancellations will receive a full refund and a 10% discount in the form of a Future Cruise Credit towards any sailing through Dec. 31, 2025.
Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line is canceling over a dozen cruises 2025. The cruise line is nixing multiple voyages throughout next year, Norwegian confirmed to Travel + Leisure on Friday. "The recent 2025 itinerary cancelations are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas," a spokesperson for the cruise line told T+L.
The affected itineraries are as follows:
- Norwegian Epic - , Feb. 20, 2025, Nov. 1, 2025, Nov. 11, 2025
- Norwegian Jade - Mar. 4, 2025, Mar. 13, 2025, Mar. 24, 2025
- Norwegian Pearl - Apr. 19, 2025, May 5, 2025, May 16, 2025, Oct. 15, 2025
- Norwegian Sky - May 27, 2025, Jun. 5, 2025
- Norwegian Spirit - Jan. 1, 2025, May 17, 2025
- Norwegian Star - May 18, 2025, May 29, 2025, Jun. 9, 2025,
- Norwegian Viva - May 27, 2025, Sep. 20, 2025, Sep. 29, 2025
The spokesperson also shared with T+L that guests impacted by the cancellations will receive a full refund and a 10% percent discount in the form of a Future Cruise Credit towards any sailing through Dec. 31, 2025. "In addition, we understand the inconvenience and frustration this disruption may cause affected guests, so we have shared alternative sailings similar to their original booking," the spokesperson added, encouraging impacted guests to head to contact the company at 1-800-327-7030 for more information.
In February 2024, NCL also announced it would no longer dock in Venice, Italy, due to restrictions of the waterways. “While we have made every effort possible to maintain these calls to Venice, the tender operation and overall experience this provides our guests has fallen short of the standard we aim to deliver,” a spokesperson from NCL told T+L at the time. Despite the cancellations, the cruise industry continues to rebound since COVID-19 closures. The industry is expected to grow to 130 million global passengers in 2026, which is up from 73 million global passengers in 2022, according to a 2023 report from the Cruise Lines International Association.

Marella Cruises cancels winter 2024/25 Asia and Middle East programme
TUI has cancelled in-house cruise line Marella’s Asia and Middle East programme from November 2024 to the end of April 2025.
In a message sent to customers, seen by Travel Gossip, TUI said the cancellations were due to the ongoing conflict in the Red Sea.
It said: “Unfortunately, the ongoing conflict shows no signs of stabilising and continues to make travelling to and from Asia by sea high risk.”
TUI said it had been looking at ‘alternative routes’ to Asia, but added its options were ‘extremely limited’.
As a result, it said it had cancelled its Asia and Middle East programme for next winter. Marella had previously cancelled Discovery 2’s repositioning cruises , which were due to take place this month and next, due to the risk of transporting passengers from Asia to Europe via the Red Sea.
Marella currently has no Asia or Middle East cruises available to book and it has given no indication of where it will deploy Discovery 2 next winter instead.
Guests on the cancelled cruises can rebook another cruise with a £200 per person discount before 29 April 2024, or cancel and receive a full refund.
In a statement sent to Travel Gossip, TUI said: “For the safety of our customers and crew, we can confirm that due to the ongoing conflict in the Red Sea area we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Asia and Middle East programme between 1 November 2024 – 30 April 2025.
“We appreciate how disappointing this news will be and therefore all impacted customers will be contacted by their booking agent to discuss the options available to them. Options include being able to rebook with a £200 per person reduction or receive a full refund
”Once again we apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience caused to impacted customers and we hope to see them on board a Marella Cruise very soon.”
