THE TRAVEL YOGI

Bhutan Yoga Retreat Adventure

Trip in one word: bliss, what you’ll experience in bhutan.

This Bhutan yoga retreat adventure is full of only-here immersion and wonder. Through our unique connections you will experience a blessing with the High Lama, stay at an active monastery, explore ancient fortresses and temples, raft the rapids, mingle with monks and discover yourself in the Land of the Thunder Dragon. In this world apart, you’ll discover a moving feast of culture, nature and infectious local smiles. It’s an ideal destination for personal enrichment and deepening your yoga practice. Bhutan culture is preserved by issuing only a limited number of tourist visas each year, so they are able to welcome visitors sustainably while preserving their endemic and natural beauty.

How You’ll Experience Bhutan

Your Bhutan yoga retreat adventure will weave together the best of the country’s culture and nature—all while grounding your experience with deep breaths and yoga. Exclusive, hyper-local experiences, hiking and culture are at your fingertips. You’ll stay in beautiful local hotels in Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro, as well as a unique overnight in a monastery, hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest (i.e., Paro Taktsang ), play a friendly soccer game with monks, visit the world’s largest Buddha statue, the Buddha Dodernma and plenty more. Soak your body in a traditional hot stone bath and your spirit in the mysteries and enchantment of Bhutan.

How You’ll Feel When You Return Home

Bhutanese humor will invoke your inner (laughing) sage and your friends and family may start wondering, what happened on that Bhutan yoga retreat ?! You’ll emit a deep vibration of bliss as you walk through your normal life, just knowing that a place that measures success by an index of happiness exists.

When we meet you will find that my philosophies on the mat are mirrored in my approach to life. I’ve been teaching yoga and meditation for over 20 years and my takeaways from time on my mat is always changing… It’s the beauty of yoga – it meets you where you are in that moment and it never judges or criticizes or asks anything more from you then you have to offer. There’s no doubt our practices on the mat enhances our most important practice… living life live now. Each morning I pause before diving into the “business” of the day and ask myself “What would I love to feel more or less of that I can thread thru my experiences?” I flow a bit waking up on all levels and my morning teachings reflect a sense of awakening. As the day wanes, my teachings are soothing, relective and restorative. I believe there is so much that lies beneath the surface of our beings and that yoga and meditation helps us dive through the tip of the iceberg, clearing clutter, so that we are more fully awake and able to embrace life!

Erich Schiffmann has been monumental in my approach to life on and off the mat. His teachings of “being on line all the time” takes you out of habit-mind and into “life live now”. His Freedom Style approach to yoga and life empowers the inner teacher to be heard. Who doesn’t want to cultivate a more meaningful relationship with themselves and others? Yoga and meditation are vehicles that help us find more space between breaths and longer pauses between thoughts so that we are able to hear our inner voices speaking about what matters most to each of us!  “Living life live” means living life alive and fully in the present. If not now, when??

My various vinyasa flow practices reflect a meditation of movement whether gentle or powerful. I absolutely love to sequence so the movements are a meditation in themself. Connected thru the breath, we stay present. Through this connection, we can explore the subtle micro adjustments to find the yin and yang in every pose. It is a goal to take this flow of breath from my practice off the mat and into my world…  inhaling life’s inspiration, exhaling the debris. I believe where the breath is stuck, so is our prana.

Last but certainly not least, my subtle body and yin teachings. Yin found me while living in the high mountains of Colorado. I think it’s important to pause often and integrate physical stillness. Being in conversation with ourselves leads to profound intuitive inquisition.

As the owner of  Be.Yoga  in Avon CT, as a teacher and as a student, I love exploring and learning especially beneath the surface of things. I love to travel and simmer in other cultures and learn from their lifestyles. I started leading yoga retreats and adventures in 2008 as a way to bring like minded people together to pause and explore life both on and off the mat.

I hope to meet you in the flow! Feel free to email me at  [email protected]   any time with questions, insights or inspirations!

TESTIMONIALS

Adventure well(ness), frequently asked questions.

You’ll want to schedule your flight into Bangkok (BKK) at least one day before the trip begins.  We have your flight from Bangkok to Paro, Bhutan taken care of on day one of your trip, but flight times are determined closer to the trip so everyone needs to be in the night before. We’ll also fly you back to Bangkok on the last day of your adventure and we require that you not book any outbound flight from Thailand any earlier than 9pm on the last day.

Electricity in Bhutan runs on 220V. Most U.S. based devices that need to be charged (including camera batteries, mp3 players, etc.) work with outlets ranging from 110–240 volts, so they typically do not require a power converter. However, it will be up to you to check your individual electronics. This information is located on the plug itself and is usually very easy to find. Outlet configurations in Bhutan are normally European-style: round, two- or three-pronged. As outlets can change from place to place, we recommend you bring an outlet adapter to ensure you do not have problems plugging your devices in. Hotel Zhiwa Ling in Paro uses U.S. outlets.

Yes!  Please note that travel insurance in required for all travelers and proof on insurance will be required on day one.  All plans must include medical evacuation coverage.  Please contact The Travel Yogi with any questions.

Yes, all of our lux hotels will have wifi available.

On this adventure, yes, it is necessary that you bring your own mat with you.  Our guides will carry them for you, along with your luggage.  A mat and a strap are good options but unless you absolutely need a block, we recommend you leave that at home.  The Travel Yogi teachers that head out to Bhutan devise classes without props.

There are no inoculation requirements at this time but it is suggested that you be up to date on your tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A.  Any questions about your specific inoculation needs to should directed to your personal physician in advance of this adventure.

Yes!  Of course.  Once you’re booked you’ll receive an email with important logistical information and a link to your invoice.  You can pay any amount at any time on the invoice; you can use it as a payment plan or leave it alone until the final due date. Remember that deposits are non-refundable so, on all trips, we recommend purchasing travel insurance.

From Punakha, drive back to Paro for a hike to the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery, followed by a final spa, restorative yoga, and a deep relaxation session.

When Is The Best Time To Go?

The time of spring from March to May and Autumn from late September to November is regarded as the best time to take tours in Bhutan. As the weather and sky are clear, the views of the mountains are beautiful and vivid.

Moreover, the climate is pleasant, and you might catch the locals celebrating different events during these festive seasons.

Is This The Right Trip For You?

This yoga retreat with on-land drives does not require any trekking or intensive activity; hence, this tour is suitable for all.

It is worth noting that there will be a 5 to 7 hours both-way hike spanning a total of 8.6 km to a maximum altitude of 3,180 m to the Tiger's Nest Monastery. However, it is not as strenuous and can be done by anyone with adequate physical fitness.

Begin the day by attending a Yoga Session for an hour at your hotel starting at 7:00 am. You will be guided by a professional and introduced to different postures.

After the session, have breakfast and take a guided tour of different sightseeing places in Thimphu.

Starting, drive to witness a 50m tall Buddha Dordenma , one of the tallest statues of Shakyamuni Buddha. Then drive off to the Motithang Takin Reserve, built to protect the National Animal of Bhutan, the Takin.

After lunch, you can drive to the National Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the late King Jigme. From the busy street, you can also progress to the Thimphu weekend market, which is open from Friday to Sunday. It is an excellent opportunity to meet and interact with the locals and witness their culture and traditions.

After returning to the hotel in the afternoon, you will join another yoga session from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm.

Drive from Thimphu to Punakha

Distance: 2 to 3 hours drive (76 km)

Accommodation: Dhensa Boutique Resort

After driving downhill, make a stop at the Metshina village to cross the rice fields and visit the fertility temple of Chimi Lhakhang, built by the Divine Madman Drukpa Kuenley. After a quick tour, drive to Punakha.

Hovering over the mountains, you can have an amazing view of the green valley and mountains. The flight into Bhutan takes you close to the great Himalayas; offering dazzling scenic views of some of world’s highest glacial peaks.  After completing the formalities of custom and immigration, check out from the departure lounge. There you will meet one of the representatives of Nature Trail Travels & Tours, Trekking & Expedition who will greet you and then escort you to your respective hotel in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

Enroute, you’ll visit Tamchogg Lhakhang and marvel at the iron bridge reconstructed using original chain links from the famous Tibetan bridge builder Thangtong Gyelpo. Tamchogg Lhakhang is one of the 108 chain link bridges built in the 14th century to reconnect with the spirits of Bhutan. After about two hours drive, you reach Thimphu. Check-in to your respective hotel and get refreshed. In the evening, there will be an “Opening Soul Limber” yoga circle in the shadows and blessing of the largest Buddha Doderma (sitting Buddha) in the world.

Thimphu Valley excursion

Start your day with a serene walk through old growth oak forests adorned with blooming rhododendrons and the call of the wild pheasants overlooking the meandering Wangchu. The first thing you will notice as you disembark is the transparent purity of air and the absence of noise. Afterwards, have a plain vegetarian breakfast and participate in “Empowerment and Soul Archeology” session. Then there will be a “Recognize and Releasing Patterns” session before you explore Pangri Zampa, the 16th-century monastery that houses astrological studies and makes offerings.

Our next destination for today is Folk and Heritage Museum, which displays day to day livelihood of typical Bhutanese farmers in medieval period and their accessories; Late King’s Memorial Stupa, built for the world peace and Traditional Handmade Paper Factory; Painting School, which preserves our traditional paintings, sculpturing and wood curving and National Handicraft Emporium, the best place to look for souvenir from Bhutan. You can also witness an archery match (Bhutan’s national sport) and explore the architectural marvels of Tashi Chhoedzong (optional). At evening, practice yoga before having dinner.

Drive Thimphu to Punakha (1,250m/4,100 ft.) 76 km – approx. 2/3 hrs. drive

Like other day, this day also your day starts with an early morning yoga class. After having breakfast, you will have “Intro to Goals with Soul” session before driving to Punakha through the Dochula pass with a spectacular view of the Himalayan ranges. Dochula pass is the most known pass in Bhutan. On a clear day, spectacular view of the mighty Himalayas mountain ranges can be seen from this sight. The pass also has 108 Druk Wangyal Khangzang Chorten which is believed to bring multi fold merit to all sentient beings and which make the pass a must visit place. Enroute there is a temple Chimi Lhakhang, which is also known as the temple of fertility and was built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley in the 15 century. Lama Drukpa Kuenley was also known as the Divine Madman.

Enroute have lunch in the local restaurant and then enter the ancient capital of Bhutan, Punakha. On this day, you will have a “Choosing Your Goal Vocabulary and Energy Exfoliating” session for 45 minutes. Afterward, you will explore the Punakha Dzong, a religious and local government center strategically located on an island between the Pho Chu and Mo Chu (male and female rivers). This Dzong was built by the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637. The annual Punakha Tshechu is held here. The monk body resides in this Dzong in winter.

Punakha Valley excursion

Practice Yoga session at early morning for refreshing your body. Afterwards you will hike Lhakhang of Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten after completion of “Stop Doing List” session. You will be driven through beautiful mustard and paddy fields dotted with traditional Bhutanese houses. After lunch you will then have “The Art of the Holy ‘No’” session. Afterwards, you will get an opportunity to visit a nunnery and get a glimpse into the life of a Buddhist nun before “Dream Soup” session. Nidra session yoga will be optional this day.

Drive Punakha to Paro (135 km) – approx. 4 hrs. drive

On this day, we will have our breakfast and then hike up to Chimi Lhakhang which is also known as Temple of Fertility. This temple was built in 15th Century by the ‘Divine Mad Monk’ (Lam Drukpa Kuenley). People visit this temple with a belief that one can wish a child if they want, get blessing from the monk. Afterwards, we drive back to the city of Paro where we will be taught by the master in the hotel.

Hike to Taktsang monastery (3180 m)

On the following day, we will have a short hike up to Taktsang monastery. Taktsang is a prominent sacred Buddhist site and temple complex perched on the edge of upper Paro Valley. It is also known as the Tiger’s Nest. This magical monastery clings to a vertical granite cliff 300 meter above the valley. Legend has it that the great Guru Padmasambhava flew to this spot on back of a tigress and meditated in a cave during the 8th century. When the Guru finished his meditation, he instructed that the monastery to be built. The temple was built around the cave and is a hallowed shrine for Bhutanese pilgrims. The spectacular view along the way and the historical sites draw many tourists to this imposing monastery. There are also a number of temples scattered along the route. Later we’ll turn to the Paro Dzong, a large Buddhist monastery and fortress, which is considered the best example of Bhutanese architecture. Now it also houses the district Monastic Body and government administrative offices. On the hill above the Dzong stands an ancient watchtower called Ta Dzong, which is the National Museum of Bhutan. Visit Ta Dzong Museum housing many religious relics, works of art and handicrafts offering a great orientation into Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past. This Dzong was converted into the National Museum in 1968. The museum boasts antique thangkas, textiles, weapons and armor, household objects and rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts. Here you can also learn about Bhutan’s history. After this hike and a short sightseeing tour, we drive to Thimphu following the Pachu River. Once a rustic village sitting in a broad, fertile river valley, Thimphu is today the nation’s bustling capital. We will stay overnight at Thimphu.

Tiger's-Nest-or-Paro-Taktsang

Today, you'll be visiting Bhutan's most iconic attraction, the Tiger's Nest Monastery. To get there, you'll need to drive to its base and then take a short hike. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche, an 8th-century Indian Buddhist master, was carried up the mountain on the back of a disciple who had transformed herself into a tigress. Once they arrived, Guru Rinpoche spent three years, three months, three days, and three hours meditating in the cave. After he finished, it became a holy place known as Paro Taktsang or Tiger's Nest Monastery. Located at the clifftop, the monastery offers a wide-angle view of the surrounding areas. As you hike higher, the trail gets steeper and zig-zags between the trees to make the slope easier to climb. You'll get to witness legendary caves where Guru Rimpoche is said to have landed to meditate after flying on a tiger's back. Explore the thangka paintings, statues of Lord Buddha, and other deities before heading back down the trail. Once back at your hotel, join the last yoga session of this trip and relax until the next morning.

Yes. Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

yoga tour bhutan

To many, the ideal vacation is one of both exploration and relaxation. Most of us aren’t round-the-clock thrill-seekers or constant nappers. Instead, we like to go big and then take it easy. We want to see the big, beautiful world, but we also want to stop to smell the roses—and you need energy to do all the things you want. So, naturally, there’s a good chance you’ll feel better and be way more psyched on adventure if you start and end your day with delicious food and healthy yoga sessions. Get your blood pumping, loose up your muscles, fill your stomach with healthy treats, and prepare to take on the world around you!

This week’s #BirthdayBucketList comes courtesy of The Travel Yogi , who had a downright incredible time while staying at a Bhutanese wellness and yoga retreat. Since Bhutan limits its total availability of annual tourists visas, the country is able more easily maintain as well as sustain their colorful, wondrous culture. Luckily, The Travel Yogi went and, in turn, laid out a terrific 10-day adventure of fun and rest, based on the team’s journey as well as venue deets (yes, Amankora always has us drooling) and some insider's information providing everything you need to know before booking the ultimate yoga retreat.

Tell us about how The Travel Yogi was started...

The Travel Yogi started at the crossroads of experience and right place, right time. In 2010 TTY’s founder, Jen, had 10 years of travel industry experience under her belt. The same can be said for her yoga practice; there was a solid decade of Los Angeles asana clocked on her mat but there was always a hesitancy to take her practice on the road. The trips that were offered lacked that adventure-travel flair. Quite simply, there was a need for The Travel Yogi to exist; a need for a company with the adventure travel background to step in and curate some amazing trips. So, POOF… The Travel Yogi was born!

What should one expect when going on a trip with The Travel Yogi? We imagine the experiance is totally life changing!

There are three things you should expect when traveling with The Travel Yogi...

Transformational Travel: The Travel Yogi is founded on the principle that both yoga and travel are transformational experiences. Think making lunch in a Mayan village where no one speaks English will change you? Or coming out of savasana to see a Giant Galapagos Tortoise lumbering by our studio? How about an impromptu meeting with a Minister of Happiness in Bhutan? Check, check, check…  Our magic formula is E=yt2, or “experience = yoga-travel-squared”. By bringing the best teachers to the best wellness itineraries, we’ve got ‘transformation’ in the bag.

Amazing Yoga:  The same dedication that goes in to each of our travel experiences also applies to how we choose our teachers. Our handpicked crew have the trifecta distinction of:

1) Inspiring Yoga Classes – Boundary pushing and individually responsive classes designed to speak to each unique group

2) Travel-Savvy Leader Skills – Our teacher-leaders are with you all the way. They love to travel, explore and experience with all of you!

3) Infectious Personalities – Trust us, you’ll love these guys as much as we do. Our teachers are the kind of folks you want to travel with.

Kick-ass Communication: You’re going someplace new and you’re going to have lots of questions! Whether you have a how-to, how-will-it-be or a is-this-for-me question, we’re here for you. We know our destinations and we’re always plugged in and available. Communication is key when calming travel jitters or pumping up the excitement volume and we get that. It starts with an inquiry and ends when you deplane, and we’re with you all the way.

Tell us about the Bhutan yoga retreat...

Bhutan is one of those locations that we just can’t do justice to in words, photos or videos. Lord knows we try, but there’s a specialness to Bhutan that you just have to be there to fully appreciate. The vibe of the country emanates from the people, inspires an intangible ‘something’, and is wholly unique among our travel destinations. The openness of the locals, yoga-ing amid centuries old stupas and being enveloped by the culture is intoxicating, but the essence of experiencing Bhutan is greater than the sum of these parts. Bhutan, simply put, must be experienced, not described.

The Ultimate Wellness Yoga Retreat For The Traveler and Yogi Inside Us All

Where will your group stay during the Bhutan retreat?

Our Bhutan yoga adventure is a moveable feast. If you want to really experience the country you have to be willing to journey through time and out into the wild. You have to take your practice to new heights (literally) and have a lot of storage space on your digital camera (ha).  Our yogis get to revel in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, and yup, it’s luxury hotels all the way.  We partner with Densa , Zhwia Ling and Terma Linca to ensure that each crazy-amazing day ends with lux-amazing sleep and cultural flair.

The Ultimate Wellness Yoga Retreat For The Traveler and Yogi Inside Us All

Tell us a little bit about the venues.

Think “lux” the entire time…

In Paro we stay at Zhiwa Ling ; the only Bhutanese owned property in the country to receive a 5-star rating. The 45 room hotel is culture/comfort in a perfect meld. You’ve got to go to the temple built on the 2nd floor of the hotel.  Made with the wood from a monastery, it is gorgeous and not to be missed. National Geographic designated Zhiwa Ling one of the “Unique Lodges of the World” for their commitment to sustainability, authenticity and excellence.

Thimphu takes us to Terma Linca and the river that runs right through the property. The rooms are sleek, clean and spacious. Surrounded by green and blue (mountains and water), it is a gorgeous place to relax and practice.

Punakha is Densa beauty. Located a short hike below the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery and with views of the Punakha River, Densa is a tranquil paradise.  The hotel lines are contemporary, clean and welcoming while the artistry is local thoroughly ingrained in every room and public space.

What has been your favorite take-away from these trips?

Our travelers come back with the best stories! There was the group that lunched two tables away from the crown prince of Bhutan and the group that had the surprise lunch with a government minister.  There was the visit to the school that inspired contagious giggles across all age ranges and crystal clear blue-sky day that showed up just in time for white water rafting down the Po chu River. We build these trips so we know them inside and out, but there’s nothing like hearing the itinerary from one of our travel yogis. Our favorite piece of the Bhutan adventure is the ear-to-ear, can’t-tell-stories-fast-enough, soul-soaked experience that gets relayed to us by our travel yogis after each trip.

The Ultimate Wellness Yoga Retreat For The Traveler and Yogi Inside Us All

Yoga/Meditation Retreats

Bhutan lends itself very naturally to yoga, meditation and spiritual pursuits with its serene and clam environment and Buddhist Culture. While practicing yoga and meditation, one also gets to experience the cultural and traditional enrichment of Bhutan as we undertake a spiritual yogic journey.

Our signature yoga retreat is back on the 2018 calendar from 30 September – 14 October .Our retreat includes daily asana and meditation, cultural activities and sights and a 5 day trek into the heart of the Himalaya mountains.

Join Bhutan Tours and Travels for a 15 day all-inclusive yoga, cultural and trekking tour of Bhutan in September 2018. Yoga and Bhutan are a natural combination; the practice naturally deepens in such a spiritual country. Daily yoga and meditation helps support you through the rigors of travel and sight-seeing as you open your spirit to the magic of Bhutan.   Our retreat includes daily asana and meditation, cultural activities and sights and a 5 day trek into the heart of the Himalaya mountains. With Bhutan Tours and Travels 30 years of experience and focus on safety, let us be your guides through the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Himalayan folksongs sometimes sing of beyul—hidden lands of happiness that can only be seen by those of pure heart and mind.  These utopias were not fantasies of hidden “Shangri-La” but rather allegories of an exalted mental state.  Many great yogic masters teach that thought affects matter, that the world is created by our minds and that “utopia” can only be found within.

We have handpicked a few places to see on the first day in the country. We will keep it easy so you can acclimatize with altitude.

Changangkha Lhakhang , the popular temple is visited every day by many Bhutanese parents in particular to obtain an auspicious name for their newborn or blessing for their young children from the protector deity Thamdrin.

National Memorial Chorten is a Tibetan-style chorten built in 1974 in memory of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk who passed away in 1972.

Zilukha nunnery home to the nuns is located beautifully on the slopes overlooking the golf course and Tashicho Dzong. The name of the nunnery is Drubthob Goemba monastery named after the founder Druthob Thangtong Gyalpo or Drubthob Chakzampa. Who is well known all over the Tibetan Buddhist world for building iron bridges.

In the evening you will meet your yoga teacher and she will be available to join you for dinner and give you more insight on the yoga retreat journey.

Altitude: 2,350m / 7709ft

Your morning will begin with yoga practice with Pradnya who has traveled the world teaching and learning yoga.

After breakfast, we will go around and see some beautiful sites in the city that will give you more insights into Bhutan’s culture and tradition.

You will first stop at the Jungshi Paper Factory situated on the other side of the river. The art of handmade paper in Bhutan dates back to the 8 th century, although usage was limited mainly to religious purposes. Today it is considered an important element in the preservation of Bhutan’s cultural heritage. The factory allows guests to view the papermaking process and purchase samples and gift items from their shop.

Next stop at Bhutan Postal Museum to get a brief explanation on the history of communication and postal services in Bhutan. You can also make your own stamp with your favorite picture, bring an image on a USB stick to avoid the line outside the photographer’s studio.

National Textile Museum was inaugurated in 2001 by her Majesty Gyalum (Queen Mother) Sangay Choden Wangchuck. With the aim to preserve and promote this living art, the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan was instituted in May 2005 as a non-government, nonprofit organization. It showcases some of the best royal dresses and crowns with a brief introduction about Bhutan’s Kings.

Authentic Bhutanese Craft is Bhutan’s first ever craft market in Thimphu town, a spectacle of traditional bamboo huts, aligned neatly below Norzin Lam, opposite to Nehru Wangchuk Cultural Centre.

The Public Library on Norzin Lam, the main street, is open to the general public and holds a selection of Bhutanese and international books.

The National Library was established in 1967 to promote the Kingdom’s religion and culture and preserve the same from degradation during the country’s current stage rapid modern development.

The Folk Heritage Museum is a restored three-story traditional rammed mud and timber house inaugurated as a museum by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk in 2001.

Lunch will be served at the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant serving authentic Bhutanese dining experience with traditional décor and valuable artifacts on display in the restaurant. All the dishes will be served in the beautiful handmade wooden bowls and plates.

Your guide will accompany you to a shop that sells prayer flags. You will get an insight into and an interpretation of your birth element.

Mindfulness Journey to Bhutan

Day 1 - PARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – Your first glimpse of Bhutan

On arrival at the Paro International Airport your tour guide and driver will welcome you.

Depending on your energy and time, you will visit the impressive Rinpung Dzong/Fortress of Heaped Jewels, a fine example of the ostentatious Bhutanese art and architecture.  The Dzong is located in the heart of the town and a few minutes walk through Nyimazam, one of the few last remaining traditional cantilever bridges in Bhutan. Dzongs serve as a monastic institution and as district administrative office.

Located above the Dzong is the National Museum that houses various antiques and artifacts of Bhutan and provides a glimpse into Bhutan’s rich cultural and religious history.

Or, check in your hotel at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary

Day 2 – The day at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary

On your first day at the Sanctuary you will receive a consult with our trained traditional medicine doctors, your designated Well-Being Guides. Aligned with your personal goals, they will create a customized well-being program for the duration of your stay, including a selection of wellness treatments, activities, and a dietary advice, which our Chefs will make sure to follow in preparation of your meals.

Today afternoon we combine some nature with culture by taking you on a short hike to the Eutok goenpa, the monastic school across the valley from the Sanctuary.

As per your personalized well-being program you will also do one or more of the following:

  • Wellness treatment
  • Meditation or yoga (either guided or on your own)
  • Swim, gym or take a stroll
  • Special activity such as cooking or pottery class, archery or khuru (Bhutanese darts)

Tip: Start reading your complimentary copy of The Restful Mind, which is placed in your room.

Day 3: Hike and heal, your second day at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary

To start off the day in the best possible manner, you will either do some yoga, meditation, swim, gym or a short walk.

Now you have adjusted somewhat to your new home we can really start your (re-) connecting to yourself. Nature is one of the best possible healers, so we will take a long hike through our beautiful valley and halfway stop for a short meditation and a picnic.

After your return to the Sanctuary you will first receive a relaxing and healing traditional medicine treatment in our wellness area, and if needed meet again with one of our Well-Being Guides to check your condition.

The rest of the afternoon and evening are your own, and you can make further use of any of our wellness facilities and services, continue reading The Restful Mind or take part in one of our special activities. In the evening during dinner we will have a mystery guest who will share their inspirational story of a transformational journey.

Since tomorrow you have to wake up early for your hike to Bumdra, we recommend you get a good night’s rest.

Day 4 – Bumdra Trek, first overnight camp

The Bum Dra trek is one of the most beautiful short duration treks in Bhutan with only one night camping in the wild. But the scenery and landscape may well be worth compared to all of the other treks and also in terms of the adventure and the experience that goes along as you hike up. Also called the ‘The Trek of the Thousand Dakinis’ (celestial female beings) you can even explore the numerous sacred and holy caves where the angels had convened. You can also get a spectacular view of the Taktsang Monastery from the top, which you will not see from the usual tourist route.

From your hotel, drive for about 20 minutes till you reach the road end at Sangchhoekor Buddhist College perched on a hill top at 2,800 meters. It is a beautiful hike with sweeping views of the Paro valley, the Himalayan ranges and meadows adorned with prayer flags till you reach the campsite just below the BumDrak Monastery.

Stretch your body. Hot tea, porridge and soup of your likings will wait for you at the dinning tents with chair and table with basic heating system. You can rest and relax at your campsite or hike a little uphill, on a rocky cliff with a Ariel view of Tiger’s Nest Monastery and Paro Valley, amid the floating clouds, you can chose to meditate.

Day 5 – Mediation amid the floating clouds

In the morning, hike 2 hours up hill gaining 210 m covering almost 2.36 Km till you reach 2 of the 3 sky burial. At the top, over looking the Paro Valley and the mountain top carpeted with blue, yellow and purple shrub Rhododendron flowers, cool fresh air and the clouds floating beneath, on a flat area atop, you will either undergo guided mediation with your mediation teacher or meditate on your own. Then followed by Yoga for those interested while others just enjoy the scenic beauty of Himalayan Mountains. Hot tea with some snacks will be served on the mountaintop.

Lunch, Dinner and night at the campsite.

Day 6 – Bumdra – Tiger’s Nest Monastery – Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary.

Enjoy the beautiful sunrise from your campsite and after a hearty breakfast start your hike towards the sacred Tiger’s Nest Monastery. The trail is through forests of rhododendron and pine trees and is a moderately leisurely hike. Most of the tourists only visit the main temples at the Tiger’s Nest, however you are a lucky few to be able to visit the temples on the top particularly the Zangdopelri temple. Zangdopelri means or is the mystical Glorious Copper Colored Mountain of Guru Rinpoche and you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the other temples far below.

Short mediation at the main temple, Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

After visiting the temples on the top, hike further down to visit the main temples and gradually climb down till you reach the base where your vehicle and driver waits to take you to your hotel.

After returning to the Sanctuary we recommend you to take a hot stone (herbal) bath with a full body kunye massage to really relax your weary limbs and revive yourself for this evening’s event.

Tonight the Chefs at the hotel will prepare you a special healthy Bhutanese family style dinner and the Sanctuary team will give you a short traditional dance performance.

Day 7 – Connect, Contemplate, Relax and be Present

Today is all about connecting to your inner-self and quiet contemplation.

You can either decide to spend some time outside of the Sanctuary, in our valley, by going on one of the many available hikes, or to just stay in and find some peace in one of the many quiet and scenic spots of the Sanctuary, where you can meditate, do yoga, swim, gym, or read a book. Of course, our wellness facilities and our Well-Being Guides will be at your full disposal as always.

Day 8 – Departure and a new beginning

Most of the flights from Bhutan leave in the morning, so we recommend you to make the most of your remaining time at the Sanctuary by doing one more yoga or meditation session, and have a healthy leisurely breakfast. Although the time in Bhutan has come to an end, it signifies one of new beginnings in your own personal journey.

Sustainable Tourism Destinations: Conservation-Based Travel Guide Series Launch

Ever Wonder Adventure launches a new travel guides series detailing the world’s top sustainable tourism destinations, including the Trans Bhutan Trial, Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle, and Puerto Princesa.

Singapore, Singapore - April 28, 2024 —

Coinciding with the announcement, the conservation website has also launched a line of ‘Adventure Travel’ and ‘Saving Earth’ merchandise, with each purchase contributing to the development of additional travel guides. The website’s goal is to promote sustainable tourism practices, which focus on preserving the natural environment and giving back to native/local communities.

More details can be found at https://www.everwonderadventure.com/sustainable-tourism

In addition to the new travel guide series, Ever Wonder Adventure aims to draw attention to pressing environmental issues. To that end, the website also offers in-depth articles on a variety of topics, such as saving sea turtles and reducing or eliminating food waste.

“With our new travel guide series, Ever Wonder Adventure introduces you to unexplored landscapes, serene coastlines, picturesque hills, and forested towns, offering a chance to reconnect with pristine beauty,” a company representative explained. “By purchasing bespoke products, you contribute to preserving the environment and safeguarding these mesmerizing landscapes for future generations.”

A recent report from Future Market Insights values the global sustainable tourism market at over US$1.5 trillion this year. The firm projects a CAGR of 23.8% over the next 10 years, reaching a total value of US$12.8 trillion by 2034.

As Ever Wonder Adventure points out, such statistics highlight the growing awareness and interest in sustainable tourism among the traveling public. However, the firm also points out that many people do not know how best to support such activities, and the new travel guide was therefore developed to draw attention to some of the leading initiatives from all around the world.

About Ever Wonder Adventure

In support of its conservation activities, Ever Wonder Adventure has curated a growing line of apparel and travel products, including unisex t-shirts, sweatshirts, swimsuits, bikinis, yoga mats, and more. Many of the pieces are themed from destinations covered in the firm’s adventure travel series, including Thailand, Laos, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

“By choosing to purchase one of our curated, bespoke, and customized pieces, you are joining us in creating a legacy of love for our planet,” the firm continues. “It's an investment in a future where our experiences in nature are harmonious and sustainable.”

Travel + Leisure

As a shopping and travel writer, I’ve practically made it my life’s mission to build a wardrobe around comfortable loungewear and athleisure pieces. As such, one of my all-time favorite hobbies is browsing through my favorite retailers for cozy outfits I can imagine myself lounging around the house in, going for a hot girl walk in, and of course, wearing on flights. This weekend, my browsing is leading to actual purchases because my favorite brands (like REI , Lululemon , Alo Yoga , Abercrombie , and Everlane ) are offering up to 70 perfect off comfortable travel clothes for a limited time.

And because I’m your in-house resident shopping expert, I spent hours going through the thousands of deals across the web to present you the best 11 comfortable loungewear and athleisure deals in terms of style, quality, and of course, savings. Deals start at just $23, so if I were you, I’d get scrolling to shop the best deals on comfortable travel pants , athletic dresses , skorts , and more.

Alo Yoga Airlift Fly Dress

Tenniscore is absolutely in, and what better way to embrace this trend than with this stunning athletic dress from celeb-loved brand Alo Yoga ? On sale in this universally flattering plum color, this dress can be sported to the courts, running errands, and even to the airport (especially if you want the unofficial title of best-dressed). Athletic dresses are the perfect garment to throw on during the hotter months, and even better this one is designed with a built-in bra so it’s one less thing to worry about.

Patagonia Baggies Shorts

I did a deep dive on the /BuyItForLife subreddit a few months ago and found that wide and far, travelers are absolutely enamored with Patagonia as one of the “most reliable outdoor clothing brands” that “lasts forever and is made well.” Since then, I’ve been trying to add as many items from the brand as possible to my travel wardrobe, so when I saw these water-repellent baggy shorts on sale for $41, I knew I had to have them immediately. They’re an absolute warm-weather must, so if I were you, I’d add them to your cart before they inevitably sell out.

Beyond Yoga Spacedye High-waisted Biker Shorts

Designed with a super butter-soft material and flattering high-rise fit, these wear-everywhere biker shorts from Travel + Leisure editor-loved brand Beyond Yoga are just what your travel wardrobe needs this season. I personally love biker shorts; they’re the spring and summer’s equivalent of leggings with their flexible and compressive fit that keeps everything in place when you're on the go (or settling into a long-haul flight). And this specific pair happens to be sporting a 30 percent discount this weekend.

Lululemon Stretch High-rise Wide-leg Pants

Lululemon is known for its top-rated, travel-ready activewear and accessories that we can’t get enough of at T+L . And although there are plenty of must-buy items in the retailer’s “ We Made Too Much ” section, I’ll never miss an opportunity to add an incredibly soft pair of the brand's pants to my closet. I’m a sucker for anything that I can wear while lounging around the house and during travel, and between these pants' supremely soft material, high-rise design, and flowy fit, they’re a can’t-miss item to shop this weekend.

Abercrombie YPB SculptLux Strappy-back Onesie

Abercrombie

Lately, my go-to retailer for comfortable travel clothes is Abercrombie — more specifically, the brand’s activewear line: YPB. It can be a challenge to find quality and comfortable athleisure pieces that both look and feel good, but everything that I’ve tried from the brand has been an absolute knock out of the park. And right now I’m picturing myself frolicking around in this strappy onesie everywhere from the pilates studio to window shopping IRL. I personally love onesies for their comfort and have been able to style them with cardigans, flannels, and more to make them more versatile in my wardrobe.

Abercrombie YPB SculptLux Curvelove ⅞-Length Leggings

Shoppers have dubbed these leggings from Abercrombie as “the best workout leggings,” expressing that they are “super compressive, soft, and very flattering.” I have more pairs of black leggings than I can count, so I’m super intrigued by this color block pair to add a bit of spice to my styling routine. I encourage you to do the same, considering they’re on special sale for $23 for a limited time.

Everlane The Cloud Oversized Cardigan

To say that I’m a fan of cardigans would be an understatement. I'm utterly obsessed with these versatile layering garments that add a bit of extra warmth to any outfit, and sometimes I’ll even roll mine up into a ball and use it as a neck rest for flights and commutes. I love everything from Everlane, so when I saw they discounted this stylish cardigan a shocking 70 percent, my jaw nearly hit the floor. Cardigans are a year-round must for me, so this textured version will be more than welcomed to my wardrobe.

Vuori Colorblock Corset Jumpsuit

I don’t know what it is, but compressive jumpsuits flatter my figure more than any other garment could. Call it magic or just great design, but I can’t get enough of them. They feel almost like a second skin, and wear excellently during activities like running and yoga, yet are still comfortable enough to wear on long travel days. If you haven’t had the pleasure of wearing an active jumpsuit, then let me be the one to introduce you with this on-sale one from T+L editor-loved brand Vuori , offering a corset design for extra style and a form-hugging material that moves with you , not against.

Vuori Bayview Thermal Crop Tank

When it comes to comfortable travel clothes, pants often get the most attention. While nobody wants to endure a hectic travel day in a pair of scratchy, overly tight pants, the same goes for an ill-fitting top. Luckily, this cropped tank solves that issue with its thermal knit material and built-in bra for a supportive, cozy fit. Rock it solo on a warm day, or layer it under a cardigan or sweater for lasting comfort.

Anrabess Two-piece Sweater Set

Crafted from a soft and comfortable fabric, this set includes a sleeveless sweater and loose-fitting pants that can be worn as a set or apart for endless mix-and-matching possibilities. Both pieces are designed to be breathable, making them perfect for the upcoming spring season. Oh, and as an always-welcomed bonus, the pants feature two spacious pockets. Thanks to an on-site coupon, you can snag this one-and-done outfit for a mere $40.

LouKeith Tennis Skort

Having comfortable, versatile staples is a prerequisite for any good travel wardrobe, regardless of your trip. And to me, no clothing item is more of a multitasker than the humble skort. With a design as sleek as this Amazon best-selling one , skorts can be styled with virtually anything: a blouse and some boots for a night out, a pair of sneakers and a sweatshirt for travel days, or a tank top and sporty tennis shoes for outdoor activities. On sale for $27 and available in sizes XS-3XL and in 32 different colorways, I’m confident that there’s a skort for everyone.
