What is a Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

To know what a fall travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe is. Travel capsule wardrobes are a method of limiting what you pack for vacation by creating more minimalist packing lists .

A travel capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several cute mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

Depending on the length of our travels and the destination we also use other packing techniques to create our capsule wardrobes such as:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method).

A Fall travel capsule wardrobe as you may have already guessed is a seasonal version of our travel capsule wardrobes that ensure you have everything you need for an autumn getaway.

This Fall packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Fall months of September, October and November. In places with traditional Fall weather i.e. Europe in Fall, the North East USA and Canada in Fall for instance.

Note : if you are traveling to the Southern hemisphere Fall is obviously catagorized as March, April and May.

If you are traveling at another time of year of for a specific type of vacation be sure to check out our other capsule wardrobe packing lists for more specific guidance:

So now you know what a Fall travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Woman walking in fall clothes amongst trees with orange autumn leaves.

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe the first thing I always start with the same principles for narrowing down my selection. The first being:

Select a color palette

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits.

However a color palette does not have to be boring or monochrome in order to create a successful capsule wardrobe. In fact I find monochrome to be the most boring way to create a capsule wardrobe.

For Fall capsule wardrobes however, I personally like to have a more muted color palette, especially for traveling to Europe. That is because it fits in with local styles more.

My favorite color palettes for an autumn capsule wardrobe tend to be camel and navy. But I also love touches of orange and also khaki.

However if you like black and white or bright colors then go for it. After all if you don’t feel comfortable in the color selection or choice then you won’t love your capsule wardrobe.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic Fall capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Fall weather in September, October and November. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

That is because you can always get heat waves and cold snaps even in Fall. If this happens to you be sure to check our other seasonal capsule wardrobes such as our Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe and our Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe .

Also it is worth mentioning that we have seasonal travel lists for specific destinations. To check your destination and time of travel head to the search function on the top of this page and type your destination and month of travel (i.e. Amsterdam October or London October ). This will give you packing tips for local dress codes and weather in more specific detail

Also, this Fall Travel Capsule wardrobe is designed for city breaks and traditional fall outings such as pumpkin picking and seeing the Fall colors. However for more extreme activities be sure to pack appropriately for the activity.

Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

So now you know the principles of how to put together a fall travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include:

Best Pants for Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

Athleta Brooklyn Travel Pant

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant. These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your suitcase and means you can try and pack carry on only.

For my Fall travel capsule wardrobe I think a pair in navy blue or black is most versatile. However if you want to be more daring these pants come in a variety of colors.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

Although we don’t normally have pairs of jeans as part of our summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential for any Fall packing list.

A pair of black jeans are a super versatile pieces and hide stains easier than a light wash jeans. Also you will find in Europe in particular that dark blue are a popular style.

If you are traveling in the US or Canada I would select the style of jeans you are most comfortable i.e. your favorite jeans from home. However for mainland Europe I would stick to smarter jeans and skinny jeans as opposed to boyfriend jeans or baggy jeans. That is because these are more akin to local styles.

Dress / Skirt

My final item I would add to your bottoms selection for Fall season is either a dress or a skirt. In many places in Europe in particular you will find the locals sticking to a smart casual dress code for dinner. And a dress for me is one of the best fall travel outfits to have with you.

A dress that can be used for sightseeing in the day but that can also be dressed up at night is a great addition to the capsule wardrobe. Especially if you can add splashes of color with accessories such as jewelry and pashminas.

For September and even maybe early October, depending on where you are traveling to, I like to wear a dress with a light jacket. However for Late October and November I like to pair a dress with thick tights and boots for the cooler weather at night.

Personally I like a midi skirt or dress for Fall but pick a silhouette most in keeping with your usual style.

Best Tops for Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you know our favorite bottoms for your fall travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to tops.

And our first pick has to be:

A basic t shirt is a great staple and an essential of any packing list at any time of year. Now depending on the color scheme you are going for will depend on what color you should have. But in my opinion you can never go wrong with a plain black tee.

If you are traveling in Early Fall then a short sleeve t shirt is a great choice however for November you may find a long sleeve t shirt a more versatile choice.

Click here to shop basic tees.

Note: I would avoid a graphic t-shirt or slogan tee for several reasons. Firstly they are less versatile so aren’t as easy to combine in your fall outfit combos. And secondly they aren’t in keeping with many local European styles.

Click here to shop basic tee shirts.

For Autumn travel I always have a printed blouse with a 3/4 length sleeve with me. These are great for places with dress codes such as Churches in Italy, the Vatican and Sagrada Familia to name a few.

And as an added bonus can look casual with some jeans or be dressed or with accessories for a more smart casual look.

I like to have a patterned blouse as the pants I pack are plain, a patterned top is a great way of adding some texture, color and detail.

Click here to shop printed and patterned blouses.

As well as a blouse, I also like to have a button down shirt with me. Now depending on when in Autumn I am traveling, the weather and activities I am doing will depend on the shirt I pack.

If it is going to be a more casual vacay then a traditional lumber jack or check shirt is a great choice.

However for the most versatile shirt to pack, you really can’t go wrong with an over sized white button-up shirt.

Click here to shop shirts for travel.

Best Layers for your Fall Capsule Wardrobe

Layers are important no matter the time of year you travel however these are especially important in Fall. I normally try and take 3 top layers and 3 base layers with me when I travel. For Fall my preferred layers are:

Camel Cardigan

For me a camel cardigan is one of those timeless pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe as they are great for year-round capsule wardrobes.

They pair well will denim and black pants and are an elegant top layer for dinners and evenings out.

Click here to shop camel cardigans.

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Click here to shop merino wool sweaters.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

Click here to shop hoodies for travel.

But I would also pack some top layers / Jackets. You won’t need all of these but it is best to pick in relation to the weather at your destination

Best Jackets for Fall Travel

Leather jacket.

I personally prefer a leather jacket over a denim jacket. That is just because I hate denim on denim and there are always jeans in my capsule wardrobe. However this is just my style.

Another good alternative is a trench coat especially if you are traveling somewhere where you are expecting to see some rainy days.

Click here to shop leather jackets for travel.

Heavier Jacket

If you are traveling in the cooler months of late fall then a heavier jacket or puffer is a good idea for chillier temperatures. In some rare occasion you may need a full coat but this is destination specific.

Click here to shop jackets for travel.

Shoes for Autumn Capsule Wardrobes

I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack. However for my Autumn travel capsule wardrobe I recommend just two pairs of shoes. They are:

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds. BUt ecco are a good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing.

However overall the most versatile sneaker for Fall travel has to be plain white sneakers. My current favorite brand is the Addidas Cloud Foam as they are just so comfy for walking in and work well worn with dresses, skirts, jeans and more.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing:

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots or chelsea boots are great for Fall travel. They look smarter for dinners than sneakers and can also cope with cold and even rainy weather if you pick the right pair.

Depending on the color palette of your wardrobe will depend whether a black or brown boot will be most appropriate. Personally I favor a brown boot but this is a personal choice.

Shop ankle boots here.

And the last item on my list is something I never travel without

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect fall capsule wardrobe. They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Best Accessories for your Fall Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

The items that are included in this section are definitely nice to haves rather than Fall travel wardrobe essentials. However, packing at least one of the below items can really help transform your outfit and make it pop.

Some of our favorite Fall travel accessories include:

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

For more information on how to travel with jewelry check out this post.

Crossbody Bag

A crossbody bag anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in cities such as Rome and Barcelona.

It can add peace of mind for travellers by making you a harder target for pickpockets. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop crossbody bags here.

Note: a tote bag is also handy for souvenir shopping too.

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photo. Let’s face it who hasn’t posed at a famous landmark with a hand on their hat?.

We like the floppy wide brimmed velvet style hats in a color that complements rather than matches your capsule wardrobe colors.

What else to Pack for Fall Travel

Well depending on where you are traveling to and the activities you are doing you may also want to include:

  • a bathing suit – only required for beach destinations or if you are staying somewhere with a pool or a geothermal pool like the Blue Lagoon in Iceland in October .
  • a compact travel umbrella – needed if you are going to a rainy destination.
  • universal travel adaptor – I always travel with one.

We hope this has helped you put together your own Fall Capsule travel wardrobe! And we would love to hear about what you pack for Fall in the comments below.

How To Pack A Fall 2022 Travel Capsule Wardrobe For Europe

autumn travel capsule wardrobe 2022

The calendar may say Fall but that doesn’t always mean temperatures dip into brisk territory. Cool mornings and evenings and warm afternoons require versatile and lightweight travel layers. A well planned travel capsule wardrobe for Fall will help you be prepared for just about anything!

Traveling with only carry-on luggage is important, now more than ever. The risk of luggage getting lost is up over 20% since last year. The best way to avoid this mini travel disaster is to pack a travel capsule wardrobe and pack a carry-on bag only. Use this sample capsule as a guide for planning your travel wardrobe.

The pieces in this capsule can stand alone or are meant to coordinate with other layers. This travel capsule wardrobe can take you from 7 days to 1 month or more of travel. That is the beauty of the travel capsule and why I’m completely obsessed with the concept. Even in you aren’t traveling to Europe use this as a template to help you plan your own travel capsule wardrobe. To see how to put the outfits together, read this post.

TIPS TO PACK A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE FOR FALL IN EUROPE

Light layers for fall travel.

Choose lightweight clothing that layers easily. This capsule relies on lightweight layers like t-shirts, a button down, light cardigan and a blazer. Thin cotton, rayon, tencel, silk and thin merino wool or cashmere are the types of fabrics you should pack. Check the weather for the dates of your trip and select clothing items that work for the range of expected temperatures.

Wearing and packing lightweight layers help you be prepared for a wide range of fall temperatures. This will allow you to pack light and stay warm, no matter what the weather or activity of the day may be. Layers can be broken down into base layers (long sleeves/pants), mid-layers (think sweaters) and outer layers (jackets).

Pack Neutral Colors

Yes, you’ve heard it many times. To pack a capsule wardrobe you need to stick to a color palette. The EASIEST way to do this is to choose neutrals and add in color with accessories or prints.

Shoes first, outfits later

The most important element of your travel capsule wardrobe is your shoes. Ideally, you are only packing 2 pairs at most 3 pairs. For this capsule, I’ve included 3 pairs but you could easily pack only 2 of the shoes shown and be fine.

The shoes included are a boot which is perfect for day to night travel activities, Europe isn’t that formal so a nice boot will get you through most travel scenarios. A good walking or fashion sneaker is now a travel “must have” for me, I can’t imagine a trip where I wouldn’t pack them and they are widely worn in Europe. I threw in the loafer because they are on trend right for Fall 2022 and are also versatile footwear that can go casual or dressed up.

My preference is a boot and a sneaker. Travel in Europe demands a walk able shoe and by walk able I mean that you and your shoes can withstand 10-20,000 steps a day comfortably. With that in mind, it may help to plan your travel outfits around your shoes.

Accesssorize

Use accessories to add some color to a palette of neutrals. Editing accessories to specific travel outfits that you have planned will keep you from overpacking. Keep jewelry minimal and never pack anything you wouldn’t want to loose.

Whether you’re planning on spending the fall in Europe or just looking to refresh your wardrobe, these tips will help you get ready for your trip. A fall travel capsule should be versatile enough to take you from day to night. This sample capsule shows great ways to keep your outfits flexible and fun. A follow-up outfit post is coming soon! Happy packing!

Blondo Villa Waterproof Ankle Bootie

United Kingdom

England is beautiful in fall. September and October can be so pleasant, with temperatures ranging in the 60s. Rain isn’t as predominant in fall as it is in winter and spring , but you may still need an umbrella.

What to wear in Europe in October is tricky because England starts to get chilly. Winter comes early, and you’ll need some layers to stay warm, especially at night, when temperatures will drop even more.

With the chillier weather, it’s the perfect time to wear your sweaters , beanies, scarves , and boots . Pair an oversized sweater with comfortable jeans and knee-high boots . Layer with a scarf and add a coat or parka in the evenings when it gets colder at night. For a dressier look, pair a long-sleeve blouse with a blazer for day or a coat for evenings, along with heeled booties. Remember: travel clothes for Europe fall adventures can still be warm yet stylish.

Tip: Ankle booties are perfect for autumn weather and will look great teamed with leather pants or dark jeans.

BLANKNYC Faux Leather Moto Jacket

In autumn, the weather is cool, and Paris is beautiful. Autumn colors create a picturesque setting; however, as in the spring, the seasons are unpredictable. Take advantage of grey skies and pack a vivid pink or red coat for a beautiful picture in front of the Eiffel Tower!

European fall fashion is always in full swing here. Parisians love wearing leather, so use the autumn season to make leather your base. It’s not only waterproof but warm so that you will have added protection from the chill. Consider adding a well-fitted, not boxy leather jacket to your wardrobe. (If you don’t like wearing leather, try faux leather.)

Tights or stockings are ideal to wear underneath shorts or belted dresses. They provide some protection from the elements and modesty in the Parisian streets.

Pant jumpsuits are feminine and chic. Pair them with a tailored blazer for an extra touch of sophistication. Pack one or two basic tees and long sleeve tops to create layers to mix and match your outfits.

And finally, your scarves can add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral wardrobe.

Tip : Stick to a leather jacket for early fall days and transition to a heavier coat by the end of the season as it gets closer to winter.

Early autumn is a great time to visit Austria : the heat and crowds of summer have died down, but it’s pleasantly warm, and most attractions will still be open. When it comes to packing for Europe in September, temperatures in around then tend to be mild and sunny, but you’ll want to pack extra layers for those chilly mornings and evenings. If you’re planning a visit towards the latter end of autumn, be prepared for cold, gray days and the odd shower.

A trench coat is a perfect option for autumn as well as spring. It’ll keep the chill at bay while not being too heavy. Another option would be a lightweight bomber or army-style jacket in a khaki shade—perfect for tossing over a cute dress or jeans.

When it comes to jeans , opt for a crisp black pair—they’re a little more elevated than basic blue denim but are just as comfortable. You don’t have to dress up when visiting a museum or palace, but it’s nice to make a bit more of an effort when your surroundings are so stunning, and black jeans are perfect for that.

Tip: A hat and scarf are great ways to complete your look and add some color and texture to your fall outfit.

The key to a fall packing list for Italy is taking reliable staples because the weather varies depending on the region. For example, the weather is mild, and the days are typically sunny in Venice .

In Milan and Florence , you can expect crisp sunny days with temperatures not getting much colder than 65°F/18°C. Breezes can make evenings a bit chilly, even in the early fall.

To match the cooler temperatures, opt for jeans . If you don’t love a sleek pair of black, or wide-leg indigo jeans, opt for a midi-length A-line skirt either in a jewel-toned neutral or a unique pattern. Skirts are always a great option as they’re roomy and fun to twirl around in.

To pair with your mix and match bottoms, pack a few different top options. A thin turtleneck or long-sleeve shirt in cream or other earth tones pairs well with just about everything; If you’ve stuck to neutral colors with your bottom pieces, then pack at least one fun patterned blouse.

Tip: Italy is never the place to wear heels. For fall, we love ankle booties or trendy sneakers .

Quince Australian Merino Wool V-Neck Sweater

During autumn, you will experience mostly rainy weather, with occasionally frosty days, and other days will be warm with plenty of sunshine.

The cooler weather dictates the need for warmer clothes; pick a scarf, but a nice warm woolen one that will keep your chest and neck protected. Jeans serve as the base for any outfit, the darker shades are always best, and the thickness of the jeans will keep your legs warm in the cold chill.

Leggings can also look very stylish for the warmer days as they are not as thick as jeans and come in a variety of different styles and colors. For autumn, a maroon or oxblood color would work nicely and compliment any outfit. Don’t forget a warm coat or jacket and ensure that at least one is waterproof to protect you from the elements, especially the rain.

Tip: Sweaters are fantastic for layering , or if you experience a cool but not frosty day, you can get some lovely wool ones that will keep you warm.

J.Crew Juliette Collarless Sweater-Blazer

Switzerland

Autumn weather can be unpredictable; it can range from sunny days to rain and even snow. Autumn is a difficult season when deciding what to wear in Switzerland because outdoors is cold, and inside the buildings and public transport, the central heating leaves you hot.

The perfect solution to packing for Europe in October, September, or November is layering in this weather. The season contains short days, and along with the disappearing light comes a noticeable drop in temperature. As you prepare what to wear in Switzerland, be ready for cooler weather.

Layering is essential, so include 3/4 tops and long sleeve tops to suit the weather, you can dress these with a sweater for the warmer days or a jacket or warm coat . A pair of jeans or pants will look stylish with warm and waterproof boots , as these are the perfect companion for any autumn wardrobe, giving an edge to your wardrobe.

Tip: During the evenings, if you wish to be slightly dressier, include a blazer on your Switzerland packing list, as this can be worn with a sleek scarf to create a classy look.

Sorel Chelsea Boots

Autumn has powerful winds and frequent rain, with a visible drop in temperature. For autumn, you want to ensure you keep warm and dry. Bring a warm jacket to protect you from the wind chill and a trench coat for added warmth.

Layering is once again needed for the colder weather, so add warm wool jerseys, long sleeve tops, and simple plain tees to your look. You can dress these in dark jeans and tailored trousers in darker colors.

Ankle booties, or warmer, calf-length boots are also a great look for the autumn; opt for boots in leather or a faux leather material to ensure that your feet are kept dry and protected from the elements.

Tip: What look is complete without accessories ? Accessorize with bright scarves in patterns and shades that best suit your personality and make you feel most comfortable.

Fall in Norway can be very unpredictable, with the early fall months feeling closer to summer with sunny skies while the later months can feel more like winter with snow. For warmer days, you can stick to lightweight trousers and blouses. Don’t forget to take rainboots and a rain jacket in case it rains.

When the weather begins to cool down, you’ll want to layer up with sweaters and jackets. Merino wool thermals are an absolute must for cold vacations, as they stay warm, dry, and last ages without a wash.

Jeans are fantastic for cold, dry weather, but shouldn’t be worn if there is lots of snow or rain since they take a long time to dry. Instead, think about packing quick-drying travel pants that will keep you toasty and can last a few days without needing a wash.

Tip: Both short and tall boot styles are commonly worn around the city. Be sure to bring along a waterproof pair to withstand the rain.

Wool& Rowena Swing Dress

Russia’s fall can either be a delayed summer or early winter, meaning you may need to be prepared for varied weather conditions. Whatever you end up wearing, make sure your clothes are clean and neat, and that there are no flashy colors or over-the-top prints.

For warmer days, opt for a maxi dress paired with flats. Add a cardigan  for cooler evenings. When it gets closer to winter weather, wear some wooly tights to keep your legs nice and warm. Don’t be afraid to double up on tights , too. You can use this trick for any cold-weather destination using tights of different thicknesses. Here are some tips on how to layer dresses !

Pack several scarves as these are ideal for accessorizing and can be used to cover up if you’re planning on doing some church visits (your head will need to be covered when entering churches). Opt for a versatile and fashionable blanket scarf that’s both practical and on-trend, too.

Tip: Some museums and churches might refuse service or admission if the shoulders and knees are uncovered. We also recommend avoiding jean cutoffs and tank tops, as they may get unwanted attention.

Fall is the time of cold wind and heavy rainfall, but it can still offer some days of sunshine. You’ll be seeing the trees with colorful leaves and taking long walks through the parks. Take an umbrella or a raincoat (which is also windproof) with you.

When it comes to what to pack for Europe in November, when it can get quite chilly, layering is essential. You can’t go wrong with long pants, a nice sweater, comfortable boots, and a scarf. Instead of a sweater, you can opt for a long shirt and a waterfall cardigan.

Wear long pants. Dutch women love wearing jeans. Make sure your pants are also comfortable when riding a bike! For shoes, try sneakers , comfortable ankle boots , or long boots with flat heels . Make sure they’re water-resistant!

Tip: When choosing your raincoat opt for one in a neutral color, so it matches anything you wear.

Hush Puppies Chaste Ballet Flats

Fall is much brighter than gloomy winter in Spain and a perfect time to wear warm hues like oranges, reds, and yellows and layer with cozy separates like leather pants , and denim jackets .

You likely won’t need a full hat-gloves-scarf set, but a floppy wool hat and stylish blanket scarf should be enough to keep you cozy, especially at night. Go for a tee as your base with a cardigan or button-up shirt as a layering item. If it gets too warm, you can wear your jacket just with the base, or if it gets too cold, you can wrap up the layering item and close up your coat for extra warmth.

It is not practical or comfortable to wear heels in Spain, regardless of the season. Most local women don’t wear them out at night either, so you still feel stylish and appropriate in booties or flats .

Tip : Avoid packing a bulky winter jacket by wearing lots of layers instead. A faux fur vest will keep you warm and stylish as you explore Spain in fall.

Jescakoo Casual Wrap V Neck Dress

Even though it’s fall, it will remain warm on your trip to Greece until November. Autumn is not definable as a season between summer and winter; however, the temperatures do fluctuate, with the possibility of rain.

Similar to as you’d wear in spring, bring jeans and smart Capri trousers in darker shades that you can team with bright tank tops and blouses for the warmer days and long sleeve shirts and 3/4 tops for cooler days. Bring a light jacket for the evenings to ward off the chill.

Accessorize your outfit with sunglasses and a chic sun hat . Skirts and shorts are perfect to wear during the day with ankle boots . Black is a great color choice because you can wear it with anything, and it’s forgiving in regards to dirt.

Tip: Fall in Greece is very similar to its spring weather. You would need minimal variation in your packing, if any, with perhaps the addition of a waterproof jacket and a scarf .

I love traveling to Europe in the fall! Venice, Florence, and Rome were perfect in October, requiring few layers. Vienna and Budapest were also temperate. Prague was cooler with a heavy rain. I wore suede athletic shoes liberally sprayed with a waterproofing material that kept everything dry, so I did not take another pair.

Charisma I.

Thank you it really helps in outfit planning for my next trip.

I wish I would have found your blog before I went to Europe – the clothing I packed screamed “tourist” (jeans and tennies in Paris) and I packed way more clothes than I needed. I learned a lot from you since then and hope my husband takes me back soon. This time I’ll know what (and what not!) to pack!

Carolyne Cook

So many useful tips as I am one month away from a trip to France & Italy. We will finally be hiking the trails of Cinque Terre. This.presents a bit of a packing challenge to include clothes for several days of hiking and clothes for Paris.

Joella

Thank you for so many great suggestions

Heather McQuillen

I’ve been traveling abroad for many years and found the TFG blog when researching what to pack for my second trip to Paris, just about 10 years ago so happy anniversary! Here I am again planning another trip to my favorite city but for the fall the first time (I’ve been in winter, spring, and summer) and TFG is still my trusted source for packing tips. I have a lighter weight wool pink coat I typically reserve for spring, but I may try the suggestion above and pack it for fall this time if the weather is cool enough. Thank you for the many years of style.

Kathy Litman

Laura Wilder

Thank you for all of the great tips and valuable information. I just returned from a 2-week trip to Europe after traveling there with only carry on luggage holding lots of compression packing cubes. My husband said, “How did you get all of those outfits in that bag!” The best part was making it to our river cruise with a flight through the Amsterdam airport chaos with all of our luggage. Thanks again for your excellent posts!

Andrea

I’ve been traveling to Europe since the age of 4. My Mom was the master packer and I learned so much from her. But we always checked the max size bag (all the gifts to and fro!) But this site and group is my Mom on steroids! Now I only take carry on size! I may check it occasionally, but it’s so much nicer to schlep around less stuff!

susan Foster

These are great tips for my upcoming trip to Europe in October s

Thank you for creating such a wealth of knowledge and sharing it.

Beverly Crawford-Westre

I have been traveling all over the world for decades, and just stumbled on this blog a few weeks ago. I wish I had found this sooner as I’m a heavy packer. This year, my goal is 20 lbs only in my suitcase and your tips help so much.

One request…your fashion picks don’t really work for someone with an apple shape. I’d love a post about travel fashion for the larger woman.

Sarah

These tips helped me so much when I went to Hungary last October!! Thank you!

Monica Braun

We are leaving for Germany at the end of the month. Usually, we visit in the summer months, so this post was perfect!

Teresa M.M.

I’m happy I found this as I’m traveling to Italy in late October. I am so used to packing for summer travels that I forget I may need to consider pants! Already planning my outfits and can’t wait to share with the group.

Regardless of destination I swear by my Compass Rose packing cubes. They keep me super organized and I love their shape. Thanks Alex!

Jennifer Allred

Out of all of the travel blogs I’ve read, I keep coming back to Travel Fashion Girl. The clothing/bag recommendations are always good and match my own personal style. Most of my recent clothing purchases have been from this website and my gallery is filled with screenshots for future purchases.

Jane Bitsicas

Going to Greece this fall. Thanks for the helpful tips!

Maria

As we are leaving for a 12-day trip to Sicily in October, this post was very timely. I feel that it will be tricky to achieve the perfect balance since it is fall, and while temps will be cooler than in the summer, it will still be pleasant. So, do I act like the Italians who dress for the season and not the temperature? It’s a conundrum and the only thing I am certain of is to pack layers. Thanks for all your tips and … Happy Anniversary!

Cheri Streicher

I started traveling internationally 7 years ago and have found the TFG posts invaluable!! Always an “overpacker,” I was beside myself thinking of living out of a suitcase for 2 weeks. But all the legwork was done for me so I was able pack appropriately – and use of packing cubes is a godsend! Thanks TFG!

Feeling Good as Hail

Fall/Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe: 18+ Outfits, 1 Carry-On

Person sitting on floor packing a carry-on for article about travel capsule wardrobes

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or it’s your first time taking a trip, figuring out how to pack light can be an intimidating challenge. I’ve taken dozens of trips around the world and after years of checking a bag, I finally made the switch to carry-on only. Even for long trips! Which is how I’ve been able to master my travel capsule wardrobe for the fall/winter.

A carry-on is a great way to avoid checked bag fees and the anxiety of potentially losing your luggage. But the lack of space can be hard to pack especially when heading to a destination that’s a bit chillier when bulkier items are often needed. Lucky for you I’ve mastered the perfect travel capsule wardrobe for the fall/winter months and I’m excited to share it with you today. The info below will show you 18+ carry-on outfits you can create with only a handful of items which will make packing a breeze so you can enjoy your trip.

Plus, don’t forget to check out my video below which runs through as well as shows you all of the outfits on!

How Do You Make A Capsule Wardrobe For A Trip?

There are 3 main factors you want to consider when making a travel capsule wardrobe for a trip.

Is It Versatile? This is key for any type of capsule wardrobe but especially one you’ll use for travel. For example, you’ll want a shirt that can be dressed up for dinner or down for a walking tour. This is where it’s all about maximizing every item’s potential and making sure they can be mixed and matched with other items easily.

Is It Comfortable? When I’m on the go, comfort is one of my biggest priorities. I refuse to wear anything that makes me uncomfortable, inside or out, which is why I always opt for pieces with soft fabrics that aren’t overly restricting. All of the items you bring in your fall/winter travel capsule wardrobe should be pieces you’re familiar with or pieces that you are confident will be consistently comfortable throughout your trip.

Is It Packable? This is where you want to focus on lightweight materials. Now I know this can be tough when packing for a trip to a chillier destination. But that’s where layers come in, so don’t worry. With the packing list you’ll find below, you’ll see that all of the items are able to be layered allowing for maximum warmth and space in your carry-on.

How Many Pieces Are In A Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

There’s no hard and fast rule about how many pieces are in a travel capsule wardrobe. It really comes down to how much you want to fit in your bag. In this article, I have 17 items (tops, bottoms, outerwear, shoes, bags) all of which can be easily rolled into a carry-on or worn on the plane/train.

I recommend being a bit cautious of how much you jam-pack in your carry-on for two reasons. A. It’s not fun lugging a heavy carry-on around. And B. Some airlines are pretty strict with weighing carry-ons. I find that in the States I can get away with an overweight carry-on (they rarely weigh, in my experience) but internationally, they are much stricter. So be sure to follow this guide to pack smartly!

What Pieces Are Good For A Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe?

These are all the pieces I recommend bringing to maximize your style, and space, with your travel capsule wardrobe.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Guide for Fall and Winter Months

Black Long Sleeve Shirt – Perfect for layering and giving endless pairing possibilities.  Smokey Blue (Grey) Long Sleeve Shir t – Giving a subtle hint of color, this shirt helps add some depth to your travel capsule wardrobe.  Brown Bodysuit – A great option for an elevated look, especially with the earthy tone.  Black Sweatshirt – Perfect for the plane ride or lounging at the hotel/airbnb.  White Button Down – A quintessential piece for transitioning from day to night.  Multi-Color Sweater – The best way to brighten up an outfit, especially during gloomier days.  Black Cardigan – Whether open, buttoned, or draped on your shoulders, this is the perfect finishing touch to any ensemble.  White Sweater Knit Top – The perfect layering piece that adds a touch of elegance to your outfit.  Printed Wide Leg Pants – Add a touch of playfulness with a printed pant that balances comfort and style.  Black Cargo Pants – The best combination of utility and style, especially with the wide-leg silhouette.  Jeans – A timeless favorite, jeans are a must-pack no matter what.  Brown Leggings – Cozy and comfy, perfect for lounging around, working out, and on the airplane of course.  Black Purse – A sleek black purse is the perfect functional staple.  Canvas Tote Bag – A must-have for grocery store runs and casual outings.  Black Boots – Perfect for dinner or a get-together with new friends on your trip.  White Sneakers – What you’ll likely wear a majority of the time, both cute and comfy.  Wool Coat OR Leather Coat – Depending on the weather at your destination, opt for one of these coats for a classic look. Leather is better for fall weather while a wool coat will keep you warm in colder destinations. Pack a scarf and some clothes for the especially frigid destinations.

Fall/Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe Outfits

When I first wrote this article and recorded this video, my goal was to come up with 18 outfits. Well lucky for you, I actually came up with even more! 20 to be exact. Let’s get into them.

Airport outfit for travel capsule wardrobe featuring black top, sweatershirt, coat, brown leggings, and sneakers

This is the perfect comfy airport outfit. You should choose which coat works best based on the weather of the destination you’re headed to. I always prioritize comfort over everything so this airport outfit is perfect for making sure I’m comfy no matter how long my travels may be.

brown leggings, black cardigan, black top, white sneakers, tote bag

Leggings aren’t a huge part of my wardrobe but this outfit would be perfect for a quick errand that’s a bit more elevated than wearing a sweatshirt. You can never really go wrong with leggings and a cute cardigan.

white button down, brown leggings, black top, black bag, white sneakers for travel capsule wardrobe

Definitely watch the video to see what this looks like. I didn’t love the button-down unbuttoned so I ended up tying it for a little *Britney Spears* moment. It was cute! But now let’s move on from leggings and get into some more practical outfits for everyday looks.

long sleeve, button down, jeans, sneakers, tote bag

I wrote this outfit with the button-down open. It’s a simple, classic look for a more relaxed day.

white long sleeve top, jeans, cardigan, black bag, black boots

I love the square neckline of this top! It’s incredibly flattering. I paired it with the black cardigan but it would likely be fine on its own as this top has very thick material and is warm. In the video, I show you how I cuff the sleeves around the cardigan which gives the look a bit of contrast.

jeans, black cardigan, grey top, white sneakers, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

You’ll probably notice that the black cardigan is one of the most popular items in all of these outfits and that’s because of its versatility. You’ll see here how well it layers with this top and jeans making it a must-have in any travel capsule wardrobe.

grey top, jeans, white button down, white sneakers, tote bag

Let’s stick with the smokey blue/grey top for now. When I added the button-down, it gave a “scientist” look which I respect, but that’s not the vibe I’m going for. I ended up tucking the top in to make it a bit more sleek. Check out the video to see what I mean!

white button down, jeans, black cardigan, tote bag, sneaker for travel capsule wardrobe

A white button-down is not something I typically incorporate into my outfits so I’m challenging myself to make as many looks as I can with this item. For this outfit, I tucked it in and paired it with the black cardigan. It was a bit corporate for my style but I’d probably wear it to a museum or out to a cafe when I want a more preppy look.

sweater, white button down, jeans, black boots, tote bag

Time to break out the multi-color sweater! I paired this with the button down which helped make this outfit super warm. I also did a little French tuck with the sweater which you can see in the video.

black cardigan, jeans, brown bodysuit, black boots, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

This bodysuit is warm enough so I don’t think I would need a layer depending on the weather. But if you do, the black cardigan is a great option. In the video, I show you how to tuck this cardigan for an even cuter look than simply wearing it buttoned up or open.

brown bodysuit, white button down, jeans, black boots, tote bag

This is a great casual outfit, especially if you style the button-down half-tucked into your pants. I love doing a half-tuck, it really balances the outfit well without being overly serious.

black cardigan, brown bodysuit, black pants, black boots, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

This is probably one of my favorite outfits on this list. Can you tell I love dark neutrals?! The balance of the brown and black is perfection. Plus, I love these wide-leg cargo pant.

white top, black pants, black bag, black boots

These are two of my favorite pieces put together. Especially with the black bag, this look is the closest thing to perfection in my eyes.

black cardigan, black pants, black top, black boots, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

I feel so at home with an all-black outfit. I’m trying hard to branch out and wear color but this is truly where I feel at peace (dramatic, yes). You can’t go wrong with this look!

grey top, black pants, black cardigan, black boots, black bag

If you need a little bit of “color” to break up the all-black outfit, simply add the smokey blue/grey top for a bit of contrast.

sweater, black pants, button down, black boots, tote bag

Layering the white button-down under this sweater is the perfect way to stay warm!

black top, black pants, white button down, black boots, black bag

Wearing this button-down half-tucked or folded and tucked (check out the video to see what I mean) is a good option for this look. The black and white is a great contrast of course.

black cardigan, black top, printed pants, black boots, black bag

This is a great option to make these pants the star of the show by balancing them with all-black pieces.

white button down, printed pants, tote bag, black boots for travel capsule wardrobe

A neutral pair of pants with a fun print? You can never go wrong. At first, I tried to pair this with a layer underneath but I didn’t love the look. so I decided to wear it with just the button-down shirt in a half-tuck. This might be a bit chilly, so I do recommend wearing a warm coat with this look if you’ll be heading outside.

black cardigan, printed pants, white button down, black boots, black bag

I really like the contrast of the white and beige so throw a black Caridgan on to balance out the black and you’ll have a cute preppy look.

What jewelry to bring when traveling?

I always bring a few gold rings, bracelets, and a necklace when I’m traveling. Frankly, these are all pieces I wear 24/7 anyway, so I just wear them on the plane. However, to spice up all of these neutral outfits, I always bring a couple of fun earrings to add a bit of personality to my look. Check out this article about my favorite Etsy shops for jewelry to find some great pieces to bring!

How do get wrinkles out when traveling?

Wrinkles are inevitable when packing everything up into a small carry-on. I always bring Downy Wrinkle Refresh Spray on a trip with me. This bottle is TSA-friendly and lasts super long. All you need to do is spray it on your clothes, “wipe” the wrinkles out and the clothes will be smooth and wrinkle-free. If it leaves a wet spot, don’t worry because it will try in a few minutes and won’t leave any type of mark.

Final Thoughts

I hope this article was able to prepare you best for your upcoming trip! This is the perfect travel capsule wardrobe you can refer to for years to come. Thank you for reading!

Cheers, Hailey

How to Create the Perfect Fall Travel Capsule

The Fall Travel Capsule is my favorite one to create. I am sure it stems from the fact that I grew up in Minnesota and it is my favorite season of all. For me, the fall season is crisp air and cooler temperatures, turning leaves and a warm mug of something delicious.

It is also the perfect time to take a trip. Fall is the shoulder season in many popular travel areas. You will find fewer crowds, lower rates and you get to wear cute fall travel outfits on your trip!

Every trip I take I pack a travel capsule, and this week I put together the perfect packing list of travel clothes for your next adventure, check it out!

What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

The basic gist of the travel capsule is that rather than packing an outfit for day 1, an outfit for day 2, an outfit for day 3, etc….

Instead of doing that you pack versatile pieces that mix and match into different outfits. The base of the wardrobe is a neutral color palette. You add a pop of color with scarves, a top, or a statement piece.

How Do You the Perfect Travel Capsule Wardrobe For Fall?

Check the weather forecast.

The first thing you need to do is know the weather where you are going. Fall can be unpredictable and so having the specifics at the time of your trip is important.

Early fall can bring warm weather, and regardless of when you may encounter rain. Knowing the forecast close to the time of the trip will help you to avoid issues while you are traveling!

What Activities will you do?

You will want to research your destination to know what types of activities you will do, as this will impact the key pieces you pack. This article will walk you through how I plan each trip I take!

How Long is Your Trip?

As you know, I pack carry on only. Whether it’s a week trip or 3 weeks, I bring the same amount. The difference is that I plan to do laundry for the longer trips and make a point of researching where it can be done before I arrive.

How do I Follow the 54321 Packing Formula for Fall?

As an Amazon Associate, we earn a small commission from qualifying purchases on Amazon, and also from affiliate links from other retailers you may find on the site.

I put together a packing guide and some sample outfit ideas that you can see here. Below this I walk through each section of the 54321 and give some options for you based on this guide.

Fall Travel Capsule Guide

PRO TIP: On your travel days wear an entire outfit from your packing list. This frees up space in your suitcase and makes carry-on travel easier!

5 Tops for Your Fall Travel Wardrobe

Layering is the key. I usually bring a couple of long sleeve tops, one merino wool black tee, a turtleneck sweater and a cardigan. In this capsule I chose a long cardigan vest that goes well with the tops. On warmer days it can be your outer layer.

A note on merino wool items: merino wool is an amazing travel item. It is naturally antibacterial so it is naturally odor free. That means you can wear it multiple times before it needs to be washed – perfect for carry on travel! Yes, it is expensive, but in my experience it is worth the investment.

4 Bottoms Pants/Skirts/Dresses for Your Fall Travel Wardrobe

For bottoms, I combine pants, skirts and dresses. I don’t really wear as many dresses in the fall, and so don’t need 3 of them. Plus, I took a trip this summer that included 3 separate dresses and honestly felt like I had way too many clothes. So, for this capsule, I am experimenting with pairing back a touch.

With that, this capsule includes black pants, my favorite jeans, black leggings and a midi dress. The dress is cool because you can wear it with the turtleneck sweater and it looks like a skirt.

You could swap out for a sweater dress or midi skirt very easily. Here are some options for inspiration!

3 Pairs of Shoes Your Fall Travel Capsule

I never pack more than three pairs of shoes for any trip. This one I chose Ankle Boots, White Sneakers and wedge ballet flats. I own all these shoes. The Taos sneakers are super supportive and I have literally worn them to walk all day. The ballet flats have a wedge because the super flat ones do not five me enough support.

2 Scarves for your Fall Travel Capsule

Two scarves are included in this travel capsule: 1 blanket scarf and 1 infinity scarf.

2 Jackets for your Fall Travel Capsule

For this capsule, I included a casual jacket that can be used in outfits and a weather-appropriate jacket for outdoors. You could swap the Lightweight suede moto jacket for a denim jacket or a leather jacket. And, because weather in fall is unpredictable, a packable rain jacket or trench coat is important.

Autumn Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

TRAVEL STYLE

Wardrobe basics combine to create stylish and comfortable outfits for a fall vacation

There are affiliate links within this post which may provide me with a commission, at no cost to you. More information at: Privacy & Disclosure .

As an avid traveler, I have discovered that a capsule wardrobe for autumn travel, or any other time of year, simplifies packing and and  getting dressed while away.

In fall, I like to combine wardrobe classics: jeans, button-ups and sweaters mixed with trousers and a blazer to create looks that are casual but put together. This is especially true if I am headed to Europe, my favorite fall destination.

I believe a capsule wardrobe can work for anyone — the right combination of pieces allows you to create a maximum number of attractive outfits with less effort.

Buying clothes with capsule wardrobes in mind also helps me to spend less money — I invest in classic items that don’t go out of style. Hooray, more money for travel!

Choose Your Autumn Color Palette

So, where do we start planning a wardrobe for autumn travel? I always start with a color palette, and I have created four color options to spark our imagination. We each have different color preferences, skin tones, and clothes hanging in our closets. Of the four fall color combos below, are you drawn to a particular one?

Fall capsule wardrobe items in the color palette: tan, cream, cognac and mustard. Tan trousers, cream silk blouse, cognac brown belted jacket, mustard peacoat, brown booties and a tan handbag.

Sticking to a color palette allows us to pack less because the items easily mix and match. It also makes it simpler to get dressed — everything goes with everything else. A color palette can start with neutrals and then you have the option to layer in some color.

Tip: If you want to explore adding color but are nervous about going all in, try incorporating an affordable piece — a plum crewneck sweater, a mustard blouse, or a green scarf. Handbags are a fantastic accent as well but can be more expensive.

Eight pictures of a woman in different outfits from an autumn capsule wardrobe. Color bars are shown at the bottom of the photo in black, grey, tan and camel.

For my autumn capsule wardrobe, I chose black, camel, tan and grey, and one of my trousers has a subtle houndstooth pattern. There’s also the blue in my denim, but I think of denim as a neutral; it goes with everything.

After picking my colors, I take a shopping trip to my closet; I am looking for anything I already have in my palette. I try everything on to see what fits and I feel good in. With those pieces as the foundation, I decide what I want and need to buy. I find that approach more fun and less overwhelming than buying a whole new wardrobe for fall.

If you do require a new wardrobe, consider choosing things you can wear year after year, at home and away

Shop Your Closet

After my own closet deep dive and found I needed new boots that were both water resistant and stylish, and an affordable wool crewneck sweater, in a neutral color, either oatmeal or grey. I also wanted a double-breasted blazer; there are so many cute ones right now.

I ended up buying this lovely Black Knit Blazer from Loft . It’s great quality for the price and slightly oversized for layering. I also bought a Quince cashmere sweater and these waterproof Nisolo Chelsea Boots . I’ve had to size up a half-size in some Nisolo items but found these were true to size.

What I bought for my autumn capsule wardrobe & trip to Paris

A slender woman in her early 40s is dressed in a black double-breasted blazer, layered over a yellow and white striped shirt. She is also wearing blue jeans and a slender belt.

I am listing the 15 or so pieces in our capsule, with recommended options for each. I’ve tried to include a variety of price points and focused on brands I own and like; I also own some of the specific pieces which I am noting as well.

Happy shopping!

1. Classic denim - straight or trouser style

A pair of women's blue jeans for are pictured against a white background. The style is slightly wide at the bottom.

Cute, comfy and ready for exploring, a classic pair of jeans is ideal in any capsule wardrobe.  The jeans I am wearing in some of the photos are a few years old, by Paige.

I am currently loving trouser-style jeans with a loose fit and wider cuff. I think they are very flattering. If those aren’t for you, you could go with a straight cut, another classic. But any jeans that you love will work. I tend to prefer a darker wash for fall and don’t wear jeans with rips and holes (personal preference).

My current favorite denim is by Reformation; I own two trouser-style pairs from last season. A current similar style is the Val 90s Mid Rise Wide Leg in the color Burnside.

I also really like J. Crew denim; their dark wash is great. For a straight jean, my current favorite is the Vintage Slim Straight in Resin Rinse.

Everlane also has a terrific variety of styles that are well-priced. Options include wide, curvy, straight, and relaxed, and they come in several washes.

If you want to be able to try on different styles to find what works for you, Madewell is a great option. I own two pairs and really like them. They have many styles in their standalone stores and are also carried in Nordstrom .

Budget-friendly option: this well-priced pair by Land’s End comes in three denim washes (I like “port indigo”) and sizes 2-18: Women’s Recover High-Rise Wide-Leg Blue Jeans.

2.Trousers for Autumn (2)

A woman wears the Everlane Way-High Taper Pant in Black, pictured only from mid torso down. She also wears a beige and grey patterned sweater and black loafers.

A trouser pant is a foundational piece for a autumn capsule wardrobe so I am including a lot of options in the shopping section below. My fall wardrobe has two pairs, I suggest a dark color for one, it won’t show spots (but pack your Tide pen anyway), and whatever you like for the second pair. You could do another solid or if you like pattern, a houndstooth.

A loose-cut trouser is especially comfy for sightseeing and lots of walking.  Choose a fabric weight depending on the season and destination. I’ve also included two options from Athleta that look sleek but feel like yoga pants. Great for the plane!

You could also go with a skirt in place of a trouser. Any skirt could work, as long as it goes with your shirts, sweater and a blazer for layering.

The black trousers I wear in some of the photos are a wool blend by Vince, from several years ago. Pictured above is the Everlane Tencel Way-High Taper Pant in black. And Abercrombie has an affordable trouser with fantastic reviews the A&F Sloane Tailored Pant . It comes in 15 colors and sizes 23-37.

The Hampshire Ponte Wideleg Pants are another great option for fall travel. They are machine washable; in six colors sizes 0 – 22.

If you want your travel pants to feel like leisure wear, here are two great options from Atheleta. For a flowy style, the Athleta Cosmic Wide Leg Pant.  If you prefer something tapered, the Athleta Endless Pant are fantastic. I bought them in brown.

Budget-friendly option: the Quince  Stretch Crepe Pleated Wide Leg Pant . I’ve just ordered these to try them out; I’ll update this when they arrive.

If you would like to add a skirt for fall, I haven’t tried but really like the Washable Silk Skirt by Quince . It’s well-priced and comes in 10 colors. XS to XL.

3. Blazer (my fall capsule wardrobe favorite)

Susan Heinrich stands in front of a large blue door on cobblestones in the Marais area of Paris. She is wearing a black blazer, jeans and blue ballet flats with a bow.

I love traveling with blazers. They are the perfect capsule wardrobe item because they work with everything: jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses. A nice blazer instantly elevates any outfit; one of my favorite ways to wear it is with denim and sneakers or flats as I am here, in Paris.

For autumn travel, I choose this double-breasted  blazer by Loft because I wanted  the option to layer a sweater underneath on a cool fall day in Paris.  But I still want it to feel tailored.

Very oversized blazers are in style this fall, but I think they are a bit hard to pull off without looking like you’re wearing your dad’s blazer.

J. Crew has nice blazer options; I have two and am happy with them. For a classic style fit I love the Regent Blazer in Wool Flannel . It comes in sizes 00-24, in classic, petite, and tall and the wool is considered “four season” (it’s fairly lightweight).  The camel color is gorgeous for autumn, and it comes in black and navy. Consider sizing up if you want to layer a shirt and sweater underneath.

Double-breasted blazers look great buttoned or open. A b udget pick is mentioned above: the Loft  Knit Double-Breasted Blazer. It looks much more expensive than it is.

Boden offers a wide variety of blazers that are well-priced for the quality. Explore Boden blazers.

And Sézane has lovely blazers at a moderate price point in lots of gorgeous colors.  If you like a double-breasted blazer consider either the Christie Jacket or Michele Jacket, both gorgeous. The latter has front patch pockets, a bit more casual.

For a classic single-breasted option the Ralph (black only) or the Romane for a sleek navy pinstripe.

Autumn Capsule Outfits

4. A wool crewneck sweater (or cardigan)

I’ve included a crewneck sweater for fall because it’s an ideal style to layer under a blazer (as I did in the photo above). You could also do this with a v-neck sweater, depending on your preference.

I recently purchased this Quince cashmere crewneck for my own fall travels. Yes, cashmere can be affordable (this one if $50), and it’s both warm and lightweight, making it ideal for travel.

Affordable Cashmere Sweaters for Fall

Budget pick : the Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck from Quince comes in 17 colors and is very soft and light, yet warm. After wearing it in Paris, I highly recommend it. They also have cashmere v-neck sweaters.

For just slightly more ($75) Naadam offers a similar sweater: the Essential Cashmere Sweater. I’ve just ordered my first one to see how it compares to Quince. New York Times Wirecutter did a review of best cashmere sweaters and Naadam is their pick.  I understand it is slightly thicker and not quite as long as the Quince option. Note these run small so they advise sizing up.

Everlane has nice quality  Cashmere Classic Crew Sweater in XXS-XXXL but at a higher price point (in six colors).

For inclusive sizing, and if you want to try it on in store, J. Crew has a nice selection of crewneck cashmere sweaters in sizes XXX-Small to 3X: Cashmere Classic Fit Crewneck .

If you don’t want wool, Banana Republic Factory has a nice blend option in both neutrals, and fun fall colors: the Volume Sleeve Sweater.

5. Long-Sleeved Button-Up (2)

Long-sleeved black cotton shirt, a capsule wardrobe essential

From my perspective, buttoned up in my favorite oxford shirts,  button-up shirts are capsule wardrobe staples, in fall, and the rest of the year. They are versatile and ideal for layering as the weather turns cool. Wear it on a warmer day with jeans and your sleeves rolled up, or layered under a crewneck sweater and your blazer. You can also wear them open over a tank, on a nice day.

Pictured here is the Banana Republic Oversized Button-Up Shirt, which I wear in my capsule. I also love Boden’s classic cotton  which I have in blue. After trying several brands last spring, it came out as the winner. COS has a slightly oversized version for under $100: COS Oversized Long-Sleeve Shirt.

For a budget pick, Quince has a lovely Organic Cotton Poplin Shirt in white, black and a blue stripe.

6. A turtleneck

A women's dark brown turtleneck is pictured against a white background. It's a slightly loose style.

A turtleneck is ideal to wear with jeans or trousers, or to layer under a blazer. For fall I like something that is thin enough to layer under my blazer. And if you are adding color to your autumn capsule, this is an ideal piece to do it with!

Banana Republic has a turtleneck sweater in multiple colors that is currently under $50, the Merino Wool Turtleneck . It comes in a cream and dark brown both ideal for a neutral palette, but if you want to add a hit of color, look at the gorgeous red brick or pretty azure blue. I have it in the cream and the merino wool is quite soft and has a nice drape to it. It’s also “responsible wool” certified.

If you prefer a non-wool turtleneck, the Soft Luxe Turtleneck Shirt comes in six colors, XXS-XL.

J. Crew also has a thin turtleneck that’s great for layering, the Women’s Tissue Turtleneck .

7. A scarf/poncho

A camel colored cashmere poncho wrap over a t-shirt. Ideal travel essential or capsule wardrobe item.

A wool wrap or poncho will be one of your favorite things. I have them in black and oatmeal and bring them on every trip. It’s a cozy layer on the plane and an ideal accent to on a cool evening. Some poncho styles allow you to wear it as a scarf as well.

Pictured above is a classic option by J. Crew: Cashmere-Wool Blend Poncho .

For a luxe poncho consider the NAADAM Cashmere Ribbed Collar Open Front Poncho in black. It also comes in a gorgeous burnt orange color called cider, and three other muted shades. (Currently out of stock. I’ll update when they are available again)

I just ordered my first cashmere sweater from NAADAM, a company that specializes in affordable and sustainable cashmere . I will add more about it when it arrives and compare it to Quince.

9. Tee Shirts

Three t-shirts in a stacked pile: white, black and striped, are staples of a spring capsule wardrobe

T-shirts are a nice capsule basic, yearround. I always wear one on the plane, under other layers in case it’s warm. Two tees are plenty for a fall capsule, unless it will be warm and you don’t have access to laundry; then I’d add a third.  I chose versatile white, a black and a striped, but colors depend on your capsule colors.

Most of us have t-shirts in out wardrobe. If you need a new one, my striped tee is by Boden. I also have t-shirts by Vince, Madewell, Banana Republic and so on. I am linking a few options below.

And I am wearing the

Reformation makes a soft and well-priced classic: Perfect Vintage T. This tee is a relaxed fit.

Boden has a fabulous Short-Sleeved Breton T as does Amour Vert: Berkeley Dream Knit Tee.

In Motion Seamless Tank by Athleta is similar to mine which I bought a few years ago.

8. Trench Coat

Susan Heinrich sits outdoors at a Paris cafe in fall wearing a trench coat, wide-leg jeans and blue pointed-toe flats.

Whether you pack a trench coat or a wool coat in your fall wardrobe depends on where you are going and when. Amsterdam in mid-September will differ greatly from London in November.

If you don’t already own a trench coat this might be the piece you invest in.  A classic trench is practical, versatile, and timeless — a true wardrobe staple.

My coat is the Scott Trench from Sézane ; it’s a bit of an investment but the quality is fantastic. I compared it to many other options before I made the purchase.

You can find this classic style at a variety of retailers. Choose between single or double-breasted. As for color, tan is a classic; I also love black, navy, and olive green.

I love this affordable option by Quince, the Comfort Stretch Trench Coat. It’s available in classic tan and lovely navy.

If you like a black trench — I think they are so chic — Everlane’s Cotton Modern Trench comes in black as well as tan and olive.

Of course, if you want to splurge on the ultimate investment piece, there’s the Burberry classic, the Kensington Heritage Trench.

Shoes for An Autumn Capsule Wardrobe

9. loafers (my favorite shoe for fall).

A woman's feet pictured in black French-style loafers on a tiled floor with the words: Monoprix Champs Élysées in decorative tile. Visible are her legs with blue denim and a beige trench coat. She is in Paris.

Loafers are the MVP of my autumn capsule wardrobe for travel. Whenever I put on a nice pair of loafers, I feel more put together, so I always pack black loafers for a fall trip to Europe.

I like a classic style but chunky loafers are also trendy right now. Penny loafers are also a nice alternative.

Sam Edelman makes a nice pair of classic loafers, the Loraine , found at Nordstrom and other retailers and available in many colors. They closely resemble the gorgeous Gucci classic, the Jordaan.

For a penny loafer, Cole Haan has a nice option this fall: the   Lux Pinch Penny Loafer . And this similar pair from & Other Stories, the Leather Penny Loafer comes in black and brown. Full sizes only.

I am loving Sézane’s André Loafers ; they come  in patent black and six other colors.

10. Boots for Fall Travel (waterproof options)

Two pairs of chelsea-style women's ankle boots are pictured. One in brown and one in black, They both have tan soles.

Here’s what I think about waterproof boots. If I am traveling in fall, it might rain. If I am on a vacation that will involve a lot of walking around, I want my feet to stay comfortable and dry. So why would I risk it with boots that aren’t at least water-resistant? Unless you’re certain it won’t rain on your vacation, or maybe you have other rain-friendly footwear to bring, I suggest boots that can get wet and keep you dry. Those are the options I am including here.

I just ordered the  Eva Everyday Chelsea Boot from Nisolo. They have waterproof uppers with a rubber sole and come in six colors (black and brandy are shown above). As soon as they arrive, I will wear them in the rain and update this with my thoughts. I own another pair of shoes from Nisolo, which I like, the Flatform Sandal. Nisolo tends to run small, so I size up a half-size, although Nisolo tells me this boot runs true to size.

Another waterproof ankle boot is available by Toms, the Dakota Water Resistant Boot . It’s a classic style at a great price in six colors. I own Tom’s classic cotton slip-ons and like them as a company.

Splurge option: Aquatalia is a fantastic Italian brand with beautifully made waterproof boots. They are an investment but I found mine at Nordstrom Rack for half price. You can explore options here: or the full offering at Aquatalia .

11. Sneakers for Autumn

White canvas Esplar sneakers with a blue accent, by Veja

Any sneakers will do for a capsule wardrobe, and don’t worry about being under-dressed. Even in Paris, women wear comfy running shoes to elegantly speed along the cobblestones.

I love my Allbirds wool sneakers for fall travel. They are lightweight and comfy. Pictured above are the Esplar Canvas Sneakers by Veja, a French brand widely available in the U.S. They also come in leather a more practical choice for fall as they are easy to clean.  Explore the many cute Veja options here: Shopbop Veja .

Cariuma is another brand I’ve recently discovered. I tried on my sister’s pair, the IBI in Sand Knit. They are ultra-lightweight, great for travel, and really cute and comfy. I plan to order my own pair.  They are ethically and sustainably made and if you have any issues with your feet, they easily accommodate orthotics.

And Rothy’s Lace-Up Sneaker in off-white which they call “blonde” is another cute option. It would go with everything and not show dirt as much as white (but they are washable). I size up a half size in Rothy’s flats but these run true to size.

12. Accessories

A grey plaid scarf, black belt and tan handbag are pictured against a white background.

Accessories are one way to add color and variety to your autumn capsule wardrobe. I always travel with scarves and chose a wool plaid for fall.

Have you considered your belt as an option for adding color? I am seeing many brightly colored belts and love the idea of using them as an accent. I haven’t taken the plunge, but would love one. The belt pictured is the   Artemis by Sézane. It comes in neutrals and several gorgeous colors, including a yellow and lilac that would be lovely for fall.  The fact it doesn’t have holes makes it versatile; it can be worn higher or lower on your waist. Try belting it over a button-up shirt.

The handbag shown is the Mini Double Loop Bag by Cuyana in the color cappuccino.

Capsule Wardrobe for Fall Travel

A good capsule wardrobe will work equally well for the day and evening. Here are three outfit combinations ideal for an evening out. Just slightly elevated from our daytime outfits, I appreciate having something to change into after sightseeing.  When I have space I like to bring a lightweight blouse exclusively for the evening that works with my nicer trousers. That way, I know I will always have something to change into for dinner.

Evening Outfits

Spring capsule wardrobe evening outfit - dress and a navy blazer

Tote Bag for an Autumn Wardrobe

I recently invested in a new tote bag, the Classic Structured Leather Tote by Cuyana. I absolutely love it. I use it most days and it’s already come with me on trips to California and Canada. Note that the one I bought is a traditional tote style with an open top. They also have gorgeous zippered totes, if you want something specifically for travel: Classic Leather Zipper Tote.

For a budget-friendly but still luxe option, I like the Quince Italian Leather Tote.

Susan Heinrich carries a tan tote bag by Cuyana, with two additional photos of the outside and inside of the bag

Sustainable Clothing Brands for Capsule Wardrobes

Many of the brands listed here make sustainable production a priority. Athleta, Boden, Sézane, Reformation, and Veja are all certified B Corps. To earn B certification a business must meet high standards of performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits to sustainability and  supply chain practices.

Everlane, a great source for elevated basics, gets high marks for sustainability in many areas, but isn’t B Corp Certified. You will find the name of the factory a piece was made in, in each product listing when you click on “More detail”.  Likewise, Quince isn’t B Corp Certified but sources sustainable materials like organic cotton and linen, Mulberry silk, and cashmere. My 30-Piece Fall 2022 Classic Casual Neutral Capsule Wardrobe

See how I created my neutral color capsule wardrobe, which includes tops, bottoms, layers and shoes, based on the Simplified Style®: Dressy & Casual Capsule Wardrobe . I’m sharing everything in my own personal capsule wardrobe here on the blog.

For those of you that follow the Classy Yet Trendy blog, you know that I have been using a capsule wardrobe in my closet for several years . I absolutely love using a capsule wardrobe every season, as it helps me get dressed quickly and easily everyday. A capsule wardrobe is a small set of clothes and shoes, which all mix and match, so you can have dozens of outfit combinations ready to wear. Using a capsule wardrobe lets you focus on more important things in your life and takes the stress away from getting dressed.

My full-time job is running Classy Yet Trendy working at home, so I wear casual clothes like jeans, casual pants and casual tops and layers. My job everyday consists of: working at my desk, doing photo sessions of clothes and shoes, moving about creating flatlays for Instagram, etc., so dresses or skirts are not feasible for my work-week lifestyle. On Sundays, I do wear skirts and dresses to church, in addition to wearing outfits from my capsule wardrobe since everyone dresses casual at our church.

Living in Alabama, our Fall season starts late . Our fall weather arrives around early October, so when I am creating my fall capsule, I will include short sleeves, then swap those out with the same styles in long sleeves mid-season when the weather cools down.

I created my all-neutral capsule for my closet based on the women’s Simplified Style®: The Dressy & Casual Collection – A Year-Round Core Closet Essentials Capsule Wardrobe . In Simplified Style®, there are 400+ outfit combinations for the entire year, capsule collections for all seasons, outfit calendars and more! Since I work at home, I am using most of the casual pieces in the capsule.

My Color Palette

In the Fall and Winter season, I tend to select “black” as the base color for my capsule wardrobe, as it coordinates well with cold season clothes and shoes. This is my own personal preference, so if you are referencing this post to create your capsule wardrobe for the Fall season, feel free to use your favorite base color. You can choose brown, camel, charcoal gray, etc.

The capsule wardrobes I share from my own closet every season, are clothes that I have, enjoy wearing and goes along with my personal style. Everyone has their own personal style as well as color preference in clothes, so your clothes and shoes in your capsule may be different from mine. You are welcome to use my capsule wardrobes here on the blog as inspiration for creating your own! While I don’t have a guide of outfits for my own personal capsule wardrobes, feel free to follow along on my Instagram account @classyyettrendy , where I share outfits I wear throughout the season, as well as outfit flatlays and outfit ideas!

If you need a complete wardrobe for the season, then you may enjoy using one of my “ready to wear” capsule wardrobes in other styles available in the Capsule Wardrobe Store !

My 30-Piece FALL 2022 Neutral Capsule Wardrobe - Flatlay

What Is Leanne’s Personal Style?

My first and foremost favorite style is “Classic” with a twist of “ French Minimalist “, which includes solid color tees, button-down shirts, casual pants, jeans, cardigans, denim jackets, loafers, mules and flats. What is “classic” style? Classic style includes timeless designs that stand the test of time in mostly solid, neutral colors. I love the simplicity of classic style and I enjoy wearing this style the most. I create the French Minimalist capsule wardrobes every season…see them here!

How Did I Create This Capsule Wardrobe?

I created my own capsule wardrobe for my closet based on my best-selling capsule collection, Simplified Style®: The Dressy & Casual Collection . I also followed the 4 steps in my blog post, How To Start A Capsule Wardrobe: An Easy 4-Step Visual Guide to create my capsule.

What’s In Leanne’s Capsule Wardrobe?

Here’s everything in my Fall 2022 Classic Neutral Capsule Wardrobe. I keep my capsule wardrobe on my wardrobe rack in my Studio Room. If you follow me on Instagram (@classyyettrendy) , you will see the wardrobe rack behind me when I take my mirror photos. I had kept my capsule wardrobe in our walk-in closet, but I found it is easier for me to access in in my Studio Room when I am working taking photos for Instagram. That’s what’s great about using a capsule wardrobe as you can hang everything on a clothes rack and put it in any room!

For my Fall 2022 capsule, I included 30 tops, bottoms, layers and shoes.

MY 30-PIECE FALL 2022 CLASSIC NEUTRAL CAPSULE WARDROBE - CLOSET

When I create a capsule wardrobe, I select my tops first , I guess it’s maybe out of habit, but you can also start building your capsule by choosing bottoms or shoes first! To give you a visual of what a capsule wardrobe looks like on a clothes rack, here is what my capsule looks like on my clothes rack in my studio room…

Here is everything in my own Fall 2022 capsule wardrobe, along with shopping links to either the actual or similar items (in case it is sold out), so you can add them to your closet!

You can use similar pieces to mine (shopping links are below) OR you can “shop your closet” too, including your favorite pieces for your capsule! Leanne, I started following you about 6 weeks ago and I’m getting so much inspiration from you. I retired from teaching school in South Florida and moved up here to Birmingham. I’ve been purging all of my ‘teacher clothes’ and lots of bright Lily Pulitzer clothes. Starting a classic neutral capsule is really helping me. I’m excited about creating it. I’ve had difficulty finding lots of shopping options in Birmingham so thank you so much for linking your clothes.

Hi Leanne! I love your capsule ideas, and would like to see color capsules, cool and warm as well. Unfortunately I am not a neutrals gal 🙂

Id love to see you put together some outfits with these clothes. To see how you style them.

I love your capsule clothes! I need to do this!

I live on the gulf coast of Florida so I have challenges with fall as well. It was very helpful to me to see how you manage the transition to fall

I live in Indiana where we are hot and humid until at least October! I am the mirror of your taste with a few tweaks. I spend part of my time in court as an attorney. A lot of time at home working & dressed slovenly. No pants at church for me, but a lot of people do dress casual. I’ve gained a lot of weight but want to look & feel better. I love your wardrobes especially this one! I spill food & stain my shirts because I eat in the car at lunch. What do you use to get food or ink out of T-shirts, etc? Absolutely love Alabama !!

Thank you! I’ve been using Shout Advanced Stain Gel (with the attached brush) to remove stains for several years to remove minor stains, haven’t used it on ink stains though.

Great post, Leanne! One question: have the Simplified Style shopping links been updated since the version I purchased in 2020? Thanks!

Thank you for sharing your neutral wardrobe. I like your style!

Would you share (or sell) an outfit plan as you do with your capsule wardrobes? That feature is extremely helpful for this busy momma!

Hi Leanne! I’ve been following you for a year now and have also got my sister hooked! My 21-year-old daughter would also LOVE to try a capsule wardrobe, but is wondering if you could put together something younger, for college girls? Thanks!

Hi Leanne! I loved your personal neutral capsule, why don’t you sell that one too? 😊

I would like to see a casual neutral year-long wardrobe. Not extensive or to minimal just in the middle. I wonder if others would like that as well. Your fall-neutral classics wardrobe is outstanding. thank you

I’m actually working on a Casual Neutral Year-Round Capsule Wardrobe! Since I will be publishing the Winter capsules in November and we will also be moving soon, I estimate it will be complete sometime either in December or January.

I look terrible in off white/cream, tan, beige pretty much any lighter shade of brown. These colors wash me out when worn near my face. What colors can I substitute?

You could go with a cool-tone color palette, using colors like gray, taupe and blue.

Great post ! thanks for sharing xoxo, Sabrine

How To Create A Polished Autumn Wardrobe In 10 Simple Steps

Curate A Polished Autumn Wardrobe In 10 Simple Steps

By Joy Montgomery and Alice Cary

There is an art to transitioning your wardrobe into a new season, but adjusting to autumn tends to be one of the easier shifts across the year as, thankfully, many of your summer fashion heroes will look just as good in November as they do in August. All they need is a small tweak, be it via an additional layer or an accessory switch-up.

Are capsule wardrobes seasonal?

This will depend on your lifestyle and fashion preferences, but broadly speaking, you should be able to adapt the core parts of a capsule wardrobe for different seasons. For example, a well-chosen white shirt should look great in summer with tailored shorts, but equally as appealing in winter with a knitted skirt and knee-high boots. That being said, we find that there are certain season-specific wardrobe heroes that lend themselves to a particular season. For autumn? Think trench coats , light knitwear and brogues.

How do you build an autumn capsule wardrobe?

Vogue ’s 2023 autumn capsule is comprised of multitasking pieces that should, when used correctly, blend seamlessly into your existing wardrobe. A floaty summer dress can take on blustery winds when layered under a chunky knit, a white-tee-and-jeans pairing gets kicked into autumn mode with an oversized trench coat, and summer’s mini will take on a cold weather edge when grounded with thick-soled Chelsea boots. It’s all about considering adaptability and versatility.

But remember: basics needn’t be boring, and alongside versatile neutrals, pops of colour and print are very much needed when the nights start to drawn in. A statement skirt or vibrant striped shirt will do the job nicely.

Vogue ’s styling tips…

The autumn/winter 2023 runways were full of staples that often feature in an autumn capsule wardrobe (think: trench coats, basic knits, ballet flats and shirting). Look 11 at Gucci’s show – comprised of baggy jeans, a striped shirt and a trench – is on our mood board, ditto the closing look at Bottega Veneta (leather jeans and a tank) and Ferragamo’s elegant bodysuit and high-waisted cigarette pants pairing.

Here, British Vogue highlights nine wardrobe staples for autumn 2023.

Whether you opt for a classic beige iteration or mix it up with The Matrix -inspired leather, a trusty trench coat is never a bad idea when the mercury drops.

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Your Key to Leveling Up Your Vacation Style

P recision packing is a true art form. We all know packing for vacation can be stressful. You want to have options for everything on (and off ) your agenda, but you don't want to overpack and overwhelm yourself. Luckily, there's a formula that makes packing a breeze—no matter where you're headed.

Enter the travel capsule wardrobe : your key to balancing practicality with style options to fit your entire itinerary, thanks to versatile pieces that transform seamlessly from outfit to outfit. Of course, how you'll curate this depends on where you're headed and what kind of vacation you're taking, which is where we come in. Ahead, see our guide to building the ideal travel capsule wardrobe for six vacation types , complete with insights from two fashion experts.

Meet the Experts

  • Audree Kate López  is a professional fashion stylist and editor based in New York City.
  • Caroline Maguire is the fashion director at Shopbop.

"It's about choosing the right pieces that are practical yet on-trend/fashionable. I always like to write down my outfits by day to see what I can wear multiple times to save room on packing." — Caroline Maguire, fashion director at Shopbop

On the Road Again

If your road trip finally made it out of the group chat (congrats!), the next step is deciding what outfits you want to wear on your grand adventure. If you've ever spent hours sitting in the car, you know comfort is key, but that doesn't mean style is out of the question. Grab your favorite pair of dad sneakers and pair them with either a matching set or a full-body onesie and oversized jacket ( see a few standout options here )—you'll be enviably cozy while emanating chic athleisure vibes. "I love dressing up, but you will never catch me in tight denim or a restricting top during a road trip," López tells us.

Oceanside Style

Packing for a tropical vacation is slightly easier than a winter getaway, as swimsuits and lightweight dresses take up less space than a puffer coat and snow boots. Still, if you're looking to simplify your packing list, focus on different accessories to change each look. Whether you love a good pair of sunglasses, a bucket hat (we rounded up a few standout options to wear in the sun ), a belt, or jewelry, accessorizing goes a long way.

For a beach getaway, the best travel capsule wardrobe comprises pieces that take you from poolside to dinner with ease. A linen shirt ( check out a few of our favorites here ) doubles as a coverup and looks great tucked into jeans with sandals, while a one-piece bathing suit—a poolside staple—also works as a bodysuit when paired with a miniskirt . "There is no need to pack a ton of extra tops or styling pieces when your swimsuits can be used as a top, bodysuit, undergarments, or layered under a sheer dress," says fashion stylist Audree Kate López.

If you only want to pack one handbag, you can't go wrong with a basket bag to fit all your necessities. "A beach tote can be used during the day at the pool/beach to carry essentials, towels, a book, etc., but can also be used as a carry-on personal item on the plane," López tells us.

Max Elevation

Packing for a mountain getaway may seem daunting, but we have the ultimate outfit formula to stay warm on the slopes and feel chic as you head straight to the lodge for an après-ski hot chocolate. The key to packing for a winter vacation is base layers. "You need to layer up in the mountains, so opt for fleece pullovers and warm hats, plus cute and cozy pieces you can mix and match throughout your stay," says Shopbop fashion director Caroline Maguire.

For a ski trip or other winter travel, you'll obviously need practical outerwear like a down jacket and snow boots, but don't forget to put thought into your base layers to maximize your style options. A turtleneck bodysuit ( see a few of our favorite bodysuits ) layers well under winter gear, plus you can elevate it for nighttime with chic trousers and a cardigan . As for pants, we love the below moto puffer style by Alo, as it works overtime as both regular cargo pants and a ski option.

Take On the City

The key to versatile and stylish packing for a city trip is channeling quiet luxury , proving the trend's staying power yet again. Think Sofia Richie Grainge 's style, including tailored basics and understated accessories. Rather than packing five different bags, choose a style with straps that you can adapt between shoulder and crossbody styles, like the below option from Brandon Blackwood. Pack a comfortable pair of black booties (the lower the heels, the better, since you'll be doing a lot of walking). "Avoid uncomfortable 'trendy' shoes and pack items that you can wear pretty much all day without needing to go back to the hotel and change," López tells us. A good pair of leather boots— like any of these —can go with any look.

Lastly, a city travel capsule wardrobe is best with a good coat and blazer to style with any outfit. Then you'll be able to swap out basics like a white tee, jeans, and a little black dress to create a range of sophisticated ensembles to fit everything on your agenda.

High Seas Fashion

When you're about to set sail on the trip of a lifetime, what do you pack? While you'll probably be soaking up a lot of sun on a cruise, it's important to remember that after the sun sets, it can get pretty chilly. Thus, a lightweight cardigan (we love these cashmere options ) will be your go-to from day to night when you need an extra layer. Additionally, a lightweight matching set like the one below from Abercrombie is an ideal option for packing light amid changing temps, as you can wear it together or separately to create a whole range of looks. "Pack easy day-to-night styles—things you can lounge in during the day by the pool or on [an] island, and then dress up easily for dinner and a show," Maguire advises.

One with Nature

Whether you're an outdoorsy type who loves camping or prefer the glamping experience, you'll want to be prepared to face the elements, and you can absolutely do so in style. A raincoat or windbreaker (ideally a two-in-one jacket) is a necessity, and these days, the market truly has all-weather pieces to fit every taste—the below water-resistant parka from Totême is a sophisticated, versatile option. You'll also need a good pair of sneakers for hiking , and it's a bonus if they're also waterproof.

"I am a glamper myself and love it," Maguire tells us. "You'll need layers for a camping trip. Go for an oversize flannel button-up and your favorite pair of denim —even overalls could be fun here." Look for moisture-wicking items for practicality and layer them with trend-forward pieces like a plaid flannel shacket.

The Ultimate 2022 Capsule Wardrobe in 9 Simple Buys

Maxine Eggenberger

If you're a loyal Who What Wear reader, as I suspect you might be, you'll have already devoured our  summer 2022 trend report , outlining every notable look, garment, and accessory we saw during September's fashion-month showcase. If this, however, is not the case, I suggest you take a look at it and meet me back here once you're up to speed.

Okay, now that you know precisely what the new collections look like, let's talk about how to channel them in real life. We know the runways present an exaggerated interpretation of the trends. Still, I'm always interested in seeing how I can realistically add them to my wardrobe and work them into my daily outfits—this is where my 2022 capsule wardrobe  comes in.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1655117453667-main

Neutral tones are a fashion headliner this year.

Below, I've taken the key looks from the summer 2022  shows and have pinpointed the nine pieces you need to stay on top of the trends for the season ahead. No, you read that right—you only need  nine  pieces to complete 2022's covetable aesthetic. These items are guaranteed to be huge for the foreseeable future, and if you ask me, it's never too soon to start test-driving what's next in fashion.

So keep scrolling to discover what you need in your 2022  capsule wardrobe and to shop my favorite finds for each category.

1. OVERSIZE BLAZER

It's hard to call  blazers a trend, as they're one of the most classic pieces you can own, but the oversize silhouettes seen at Stella McCartney and Jil Sander are absolutely worthy of that accolade.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093731874-image

2. MAXI SKIRT

It's been a long time since maxi skirts were so prevalent on the runway, but they just kept cropping up. Everyone from Chloé to Givenchy showcased them in their collections. There was, however, one commonality: They were all sleek and streamlined.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093459396-image

3. PLATFORM SHOES

Platforms are a trend that has been bubbling under the surface for a few seasons now, but make no mistake—they are very much back this year. Nodaleto has a new slingback silhouette I just know is going to fly, but you can also get your stacked fill on the high street should your budget not stretch that far.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640094552911-image

4. WHITE DRESS

Flocks of white dresses cascaded down the runways throughout the course of fashion month. Although they always make a comeback for summer, 2022's iterations are distinguishable by their cutouts, ruffles, and fancy fabrications like tulle and sequins.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093074957-image

One of the more controversial trends from the spring/summer 2022 runways, bra tops were everywhere you turned. Worn boldly on their own or layered under shirting and jackets, how you style yours is entirely up to you.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093293731-image

6. SOMETHING FEATHERED

Feathers are synonyms with party season, but this year they're sticking around for spring. Pastel shades decorated the collections of so many designers—Gucci, Valentino, and Giambattista Valli to name a mere few. My favorite way to channel the trend is with a cardigan trimmed with the fluffy stuff. Though, Karen Millen's trousers are tempting too.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640091624750-image

7. PREPPY KNITWEAR

I've never been the sporty type, but I'm thinking of joining this fashion league. Cricket and varsity were the dominant knits on the spring/summer 2022 runways and will help you perfect the preppy vibe that overarches the season with ease.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640092095104-image

8. LOGO BAG

Designers have been delicate with their branding on bags for a while now, but not for 2022. No, this is the year where in-your-face branding will make a comeback, and you'll want absolutely everyone to know where your bag is from. Gucci and Loewe have already mastered the look (as did Tory Burch on the runway), but I'm also enjoying the high street's take.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640092679350-image

9. TROUSER SET

If you lived in your knitted set in 2021, rest assured this is a safe space, and you have nothing to feel ashamed of. Still, times are changing, and I'm going to do my best to wean myself off loungewear. Instead, I'll be investing in a sleek trouser co-ord for a simple but elegant outfit solution.

Viviene Westwood attends a tribute at the V&A in 1998 wearing a taffeta ball gown

‘Pretty incredible’: Vivienne Westwood’s personal wardrobe to be auctioned

Most of 200-plus lots are complete looks, with some showing signs of repeated mending by late designer

A taffeta ball gown with the span of a light aircraft is one of the more magnificent items to go on sale at Christie’s in June as part of an auction of the personal wardrobe of Dame Vivienne Westwood .

From her 1999 Dressed to Scale collection, the gown may be dramatic but is a drop in the ocean among more than 200 lots of fashion, jewellery and accessories worn by the late designer, activist and patron saint of punk over the decades.

The taffeta gown from Vivienne Westwood’s Dressed to Scale collection

Adrian Hume-Sayer, a collections director at Christie’s, said: “This sale is without precedent and will always be without equal. The personal wardrobe of arguably Britain’s greatest ever fashion designer is pretty incredible. It’s a sort of once in a lifetime thing.”

The items have been selected by Andreas Kronthaler, Westwood’s husband of more than 30 years, as well as a design partner and the creative director of the Vivienne Westwood brand. He discussed his idea to organise it with Westwood in the final weeks before she died, aged 81, in 2022 .

Navy blue two-piece featuring a skirt with a sheer panel placed cheekily just below the knicker line

The earliest look dates back to Westwood’s autumn/winter 1983-84 collection, Witches. Inspired in part by the US artist Keith Haring’s drawings on the theme, the navy blue two-piece features a skirt with a sheer panel placed cheekily just below the knicker line – a fitting design quirk from the person who eschewed knickers both times she attended Buckingham Palace to receive honours.

Another, from the spring/summer 2005-06 Propaganda collection – which was among Westwood’s most overtly political and was inspired by the work of Aldous Huxley – is printed with slogans including “NINSDOL”, which the designer said stood for nationalist idolatry, non-stop distraction and organised lying, and “Who the Fuck Needs Art?”

Vivienne Westwood walks the runway during the Vivienne Westwood Ready to Wear Spring/Summer 2006 fashion show as part of the Paris fashion week in 2005

Her off-kilter, anti-establishment clothes, worn by everyone from Pharrell Williams to Theresa May, perhaps found their most apt and magical model in the Derbyshire-born designer herself, and most of the lots are made up of complete looks as worn by Westwood rather than single garments.

It was the signs of wear and personality that Hume-Sayer said were part of the “perfect storm” of the auction – some even still have her badges on them; “some buttons and pins and things”.

From the collection of a person who ate pizza with a knife and fork , you can expect the clothes to be in good condition. But, fittingly for someone who cared deeply for the planet, many of them show signs of repair. Some items, said Hume-Sayer, had been “mended and mended and mended”.

One dress from the Gaia the One and Only spring/summer 2011 collection, an ice-blue satin “Cinderella” dress – apparently one of Westwood’s favourites – has been extensively mended. On another item, Hume-Sayer said he thought he could recall seeing “a needle still stuck in it where she was mending it”.

A Vivienne Westwood playing card featuring the designer in full punk mode

This dedication to her activist ethos felt fitting, as well, said Hume-Sayer, as offering an insight into the woman behind the clothes, who grew up “in that wartime era of make do and mend”.

It was too early to tell who the buyers would be but Hume-Sayer expected that, “with a name of this scale and somebody who’s had this much influence on so many people”, potential bidders would be “everybody you expect and everybody you don’t”.

The clothes will also be sold alongside Westwood’s playing cards project, which the activist-designer conceived to help raise funds for Greenpeace.

The entirety of proceeds from the sale will go to The Vivienne Foundation, Amnesty International and Médecins Sans Frontières.

The items will be presented across two auctions: a live sale in London on 25 June and an online auction from 14-28 June. They will also be on display as part of a free exhibition open to the public at Christie’s, King Street, London, from 14-24 June.
